For me autumn is a time of new beginnings, of new projects and looking at what has been accomplished so far in the year. In fact I would go as far as to say that this is my own personal New Year. The scent of wet earth and waning moon call me to take stock and inspire me to start researching new things, letting my thoughts wander the changing landscape. It is time to reap the rewards of what have been sewn in to this month’s harvest. The standard of submissions has been increasing with the summer winding down and the search for creative outlets growing. The works chosen this month come in many mediums, shapes, sizes and interpretations. I wish you all a pleasant change in seasons and many happy surprises to come. Love — Anna —

Once I had a garden, where I cultivated all my vegetables. Being a highly individualistic artist, I shouldn’t have been astonished to earn fruits and vegetables of highly individualistic appearence. No vegetable had the typical expected form of its kind, but instead they showed different strange shapes, which really cried for being drawn. Therefore, before taking them to the kitchen, I first made pencil drawings and so I got a double harvest, one for my meals and one for the art. Due to advances in genetic, biological and chemical engineering, the multinational food production industry will make sure that in the future there will be constant developments in the manufacturing of food. Our fortunate descendants will be able to enjoy food not tasting like anything found in our in our current diet. And this harvest of deliciousness will look like nothing we are eating now. Based on extensive scientific food forecasting research, it is my pleasure to present to you, Dear Reader, a s mall visual feast, a pictorial hors d’oeuvre as it were, of a few of the expected harvests of the future. future fruits, vegetables, and fruit-vegetable hybrids: These essential foodstuffs will be like nothing you have ever seen! But they will all be easily identifiable to everyone as either a fruit, vegetable, or a fruit-vegetable hybrid due to their attractive green glow. And no need to worry about finding any trace of impurities such as dirt or insects in this food group as they will be manufactured under the most sterile of conditions. You’ll want to eat every last bite because they might be good for you! meat-like food: Meat-like treats are waiting for us in the future! Of course mammals, birds, fish, and insects will look different in the future due to industrial food progress and unanticipated changes in the global ecosystem. But this is of no concern. All meat-like products and by-products will be uniformly coated with a delicious dark sludge containing subtly colored flavoring elements. You’ll want second helpings, for sure!

‘FaceBook’ Frome is a harvest of faces. I recruited 50 volunteers from my hometown to have their face cast in plaster and then made into concave p orcelain portraits. It was a whole process with different stages that lasted 6 months. Not only did it seem I was harvesting faces removing them from their plaster mould. But it was the different faces, the marking, wrinkles, eyelashes and crow feet or the smooth faces of young girls and boys that added to a real sense of richness and diversity. ’FaceBook’ Frome on kasvojen sato. Värväsin 50 vapaaehtoista kotikaupungistani kastamaan kasvonsa kipsimuotteihin, joista tein koveran posliinimuotokuvan. Koko prosessi eri vaiheineen kesti kuusi kuukautta. He stopped, wiped his forehead and honed the scythe drawing the honing stone on both sides. He has been working his twentieth summer on the fields. There might be another twenty, he thought, then I can have a rest at last. bale The little boy had just one thought, then built a little hovel of straw bales on the stubble. He slipped in and out, started to feel at home and played around, after a while all the same he had the feeling of want. I lay there staring at the ceiling. They should have told me, should have warned me. I felt a ping in my back and I wince in pain. There should be some kind of documentary they make you watch before sending you out to bring in turf. You are bent double at a 985 degree angle for what seems like a decade. Well at least it’s over for today. When the alarm goes off I almost piss myself. You have got be kidding me. I hear the pat patting on the stair as the others rush down to breakfast. Right body, up. Should I b e worried my body isn’t reacting. I grab onto the bedside locker somehow managing to pull myself up out of my gran’s downy duck feather’s. I p eer out through small bleary bloodshot eyes trying to focus on the old grandfather clock in the corner of the room. 4.30, that can’t be right surely? It was. I trudge down the stairs vertically, my back completely locked. When I get to the kitchen everyone is sitting at the big oak table that my grandfather carved himself. 75 hours it took. All the Hartnett kids knew the story. It’s drilled into them from a really young age. Sitting at the table I realize all the cousins are staring at me. How did you sleep asks Joe? Like a baby replies Alice. Yea and the baby only cried for parts of the night. They all laugh. I roll my eyes at them as they leave all singing I’ll see you, if you get there, if you ever get there!

It’s cold out there today, Gran says, make sure you wrap up well ok Peter. Yes Gran. And make sure you put on a bit of lippy, you don’t want to chap those nice kissing lips now do you. No gran. Here bring this chapstick with you and remember to bend your knees when your picking up the turf. Yes gran. You better get out there. Your grandfather has been out there since 3.30.
