Editor's Note d uominen on upeaa ja henkilökohtaisesti olen kärsinyt kateudesta taiteellisia vibojanne ja panostanne kohtaan tällä viikolla. Useimmat luovat ihmiset käyvät tämän läpi – ainakin kaikki ne, joiden kanssa olen koskaan keskustellut muutaman tuopin äärellä. Pahinta on nähdä mahtava taiteellinen työ ja huomata sitten, että sen on tehnyt nuorempi, älykkäämpi ja paremmin verkostoitunut henkilö. ¶ Vihreäsilmäinen hirviö nostaa päätään, ja oma sisäinen luomisen taistelusi romahtaa itsensä päälle. reation is grand and I personally have had a case of the I’mjealous-of-your-artistic-vibes-and-contribution-to-thisworld this week. Most creatives go through this – at least all the ones I’ve ever met and conversed with over a pint or two. The worst is seeing a brilliant piece of work and then realising that the person who made it is younger, smarter and better connected. ¶ The green eyed monster has reared its head and your own personal struggle to create has collapsed upon itself. Now, as you sit staring at a blank wall wondering if crying would make you feel better (it doesn't) that spark comes, it might not be pretty but the spark of creating something new begins to flow and jealousy ebb or possibly fuel it. ¶ The work in this month’s issue shows many processes of creation and great views of what a creation story is, starting from the traditional ‘where did we come from’ approach to how we will develop an aesthetic need for some new digitised skin. You have to love the ingenuity of creation and I feel we have rounded up a great group of creatives that may just give you a fit of jealousy and fuel a new creation of your own. ¶ Keep creating no matter what it takes. — Anna

The Future Human d designed a collection of virtual digital skins that was inspired by morphogenesis and mineral crystallisation processes. ¶ A series of radical non-human-like aesthetics were fashioned, to engage the public to consider if we have the tools to-redesign ourselves, would we still look, feel and be human? ¶ I also worked in collaboration with a company called Holition, who deals with a range of 3d technologies in particular Augmented Reality. ¶ Augmented Reality technology blurs the boundaries between the real and the virtual worlds; it superimposes graphics, audio and other sense enhancements over a live view of the world. ¶ Holition and I designed and developed new ways to utilise and implement the ar to enable a more tactile and tangible response to technology, bridging the gap between the immaterial and material worlds. ¶ We translated the digital skins into the technology, and developed face-tracking ar to create a virtual experience that would enable the public to interact and visualise the future technological impact on society and the self.

Creation Legend d ord Pruk was First and lived in the blackness that was before everything. He was pleased with the blackness, happy to live in the dark. But Lord Pruk grew lonely and he took himself a wife. For a while Lord Pruk and Lady Chak were happy. ¶ As First, Lord Pruk was away for long periods of time and Lady Chak was happy to spend her time awaiting his return. After a while, however, she grew bored. She would awake in the mornings and look out but all she could see was blackness, day after day the same. She determined to brighten up her husband’s home. ¶ Lady Chak took a diamond necklace, which her husband had given her as a wedding present, and she ground up some of the stones. The dust from these she scattered across the blackness so that they twinkled out and these became the stars. The largest diamond she placed in the centre of the blackness and it shone with a fierce brilliance, and this became the sun. After this she placed the remaining seven stones around the sun to form the planets. When she had finished she sat back and admired her handiwork. ¶ When Lord Pruk returned Lady Chak showed him what she had done but instead of being pleased he was angry that his blackness, which he loved, had been spoilt. He raised his wings and beat at the blackness but the diamonds would not come off. ¶ The force of his wings caused such a wind that the stars and the planets began to spin around the sun. Dust and feathers from Lord Pruk’s wings settled on the planets making the mountains, the valleys and the soil. Finally Lord Pruk, his anger spent, wept and his tears fell on the fourth planet and gave us the seas and oceans, which are still salty today. ¶ When Lady Chak saw how upset her husband was she was sorry that she had done this thing and to show her remorse she plucked the feathers from over her heart and gave them to Lord Pruk. He saw that she was truly sorry and took up the feathers and breathed life in to them, creating the first Toknans. He placed us on the fourth planet so that his wife could see us when she awoke each morning. ¶ That is how we came into being, through the love of Lord Pruk for his wife Lady Chak.

Reproduction d he images in the Photographic Reproduction series use photography to explore the creation and development of a human foetus. The series consists of nine images which follow the foetus’ journey from conception to birth. ¶ Combining traditional analogue and contemporary digital technologies, photographic representations of female body parts, sperm, ovaries and embryos are manipulated to create complex, geometric patterns which invite the viewer to consider the nature of both the reproductive and photographic processes. ¶ The photographic isolation and modification of the elements of conception parallels contemporary reproductive techniques which enable human life to be created in the sterile atmosphere of the laboratory, rather than the warmth of the conjugal bed. ¶ In addition to the nine prints, the series also includes a textile hanging entitled Making Babies. Photographic images from the Photographic Reproduction series are printed onto fabric before being appliquéd onto a white cotton ground and embroidered with representations of swimming sperm. The contemporary and nontraditional nature of the printed and embroidered motifs invite a discussion about the nature of contemporary photography and the cross over between art and craft practices. alokuvauksellinen Lisääntyminen –kuvasarja kertoo ihmissikiön kehityksestä. Through a Little Box d hotographs are about point of view. They have always shown one perspective of the greater world through their monocular vision providing only a glimpse of what is directly in front of it without consideration of the extraneous information. The camera cannot be blamed for the myopic vision imparted by it, it is the role of the photographer themselves to point the lens and decide what is of visual importance. The person behind the camera is often forgotten when we view an image, but like the Great and Powerful Oz, there is a man behind the curtain pulling on his levers and switches. The history of photography has shown us the various objects of importance and how they have transitioned from the iconic and idealized to the vernacular and mundane. One cannot exist without the other for it is through the other that each is defined. This is an examination of the dichotomy of vision within one space, separated by a single lens.

Hexsexus Series d npsychophilia is a contrived encyclopedia composed of random, unrelated, personal, historical, factual and fantasy images embedded in or on a two dimensional plain. This project, like others, is ongoing and will take approximately 5 years to produce encompassing a large body of diverse works. Each series can contain a sub-series to purposely expand on the original theme.

Presented information and images cannot be accessed through standard research procedures such as libraries, internet or academia [no university generated, crunchy vegetable correctness] but by reinterpretation intuitively as a private rebus. ¶ Eschewing a standard academic page / book format, sections from various publications such as a child’s coloring books, graph paper, post-its, Chinese takeout menus, Exploitation Movie Ads, metaphysical text, anatomical prints, mathematical formulas, [math was always a problem, now I do advanced equations my way: after all theoretical math does exist!], mechanical drawings etc. are mounted on the surface of discarded vellum architectural plans which have been reversed so that a ghost image shows through. Materials are alchemically selected: discarded papers are chosen by their level of un-importance after final use and resurrected into a new surface for imagery. These recycled elements

become spiritually transformed to a higher level of usefulness. ¶ In Alchemy the traditional base material, lead: symbolizing the dark, [it is rumored to be feces] is transformed into white gold representing pure intelligence, learning and light. ¶ The selected materials are cut into shapes and pasted onto the supporting surface becoming vignettes representing conduits into a multi-dimensional layering of events or a total quantum universe. ¶ Drawing on top of this diverse surface with various hard stick mediums, by erasing and re-drawing, I render a private lexicon of symbols and images creating a compact totality expressing microcosm as macrocosm. The many layered result is sealed with a heavy coat of gloss acrylic. ¶ Titles are very important becoming a minimal form of poetry, like Japanese Haiku, describing the sum as a whole [gestalt] and are included in the composition. ¶ Hexsexus, a created word, is the magical transformation [shape shifting] of an object, event or substance first by hexing: destroying or devaluing it’s original form or pretense and reuniting it’s elements forming a new conception and image. ¶ Pagan Transexuality and The Devouring Goddesses Vagina Dentata [ancient Parthenogenesis] is the re-seeding or morphing starting point in which an object can singularly re-evolve without a partner, the result being truly protean. ¶ Completed artwork relates to the many versions of Grail Mythology, arcane to vernacular, in which the quest is never totally achieved and the process becomes the motivating end to the means. To posses the Grail would mean the end of all accomplishment for there would be nothing left to pursue. npsychophilia on teennäinen tietosanakirja, joka koostuu satunnaisista, toisiinsa liittymättömistä, henkilökohtaisista, historiallisista, oikeista ja keksityistä kuvista, jotka on upotettu kaksiulotteiselle tasolle. Materiaalit on valittu alkemistisesti; jätepaperit on valittu niiden epätärkeyden mukaan viimeisen käyttökerran jälkeen ja herätetty henkiin uutena kuvapintana.

Elephant d reeted by a warning extract from Werner Herzog’s 2005 documentary Grizzly Man, (where the director warns against the listening to a recording of Timothy Treadwell’s death) the viewer is enticed through a nearby entrance to discover the contents of a dimly lit room. The only light comes from the blue glow of a large freestanding screen, centrally placed and replaying constantly the nothingness of a static film grain. Initially what can be heard are the resounding echoes of white noise, which closer listening reveals to be the faint unfolding of silent horror. A story is quietly unravelling yet its truth remains frustratingly intangible. ¶ What the viewer actually experiences is the subtle editing of hundreds of suspense extracts from various films spliced together to create a new story; one without beginning, end or definable narrative, which stands in place of the actuality of an event. This redefining of pre-existing material and its constant repetition leaves the spectator questioning the boundary between, not only reality and fiction, but ultimately life and death. With answers few, the viewer is led away to create their own truth, their own story and form their own images within the screen’s illuminating grain.

atsojaa saattelee hämärästi valaistuun huoneeseen ote Werner Herzogin vuoden 2005 dokumentista Grizzly Man, jossa ohjaaja varoittaa kuuntelemasta Timothy Treadwellin kuoleman nauhoitusta. Ainoa valonlähde tulee keskelle huonetta asetetun suuren ruudun sinisestä hehkusta ja sen toistamasta, staattisesta ja rakeisesta olemattomuudesta. Aluksi valkoisen melun kaiut kuulostavat hiljaiselta kauhulta. Tarina valkenee hiljaa, mutta sen totuus pysyy turhauttavan koskemattomana. ¶ Se, mitä katsoja itse asiassa kokeekaan, on hienovarainen editointi sadoista jännitysfilmien otteista, joista on yhdistetty uusi tarina; tarina ilman alkua, loppua tai määriteltävää kerrontaa; tarina, joka ottaa tapahtuman todellisuuden paikan. Tämä, olemassa olevan materiaalin uudelleen määrittely ja sen jatkuva toistuvuus jättää katsojan kyseenalaistamaan paitsi todellisuuden ja fiktion rajaa, lopulta myös elämän ja kuoleman. in-the-World d y artistic reaction to Heidegger's essay Building Dwelling Thinking ‚digitally manipulated photos and one drawing (title of this drawing is Fourfold) . ¶ The sand tower is reminicent of the Tower of Babel, is a digital photo I took on a Dutch coast recently. ¶ The Babel story is seen as a metaphor for the dangers of technology. To paraphrase Heidegger, if technology solves all our problems, this will be our biggest problem. That is why the tower was eventually ruined by the God who came down and caused them to speak different languages. We could say The Tower of Babel is a kind of Heideggerian prophesy, where human Dasein builds technologically advanced almighty tower of domination which at the same time has an self-destructing tendency. ¶ According to Heidegger in this letting-be of things, Dasein does not attempt to manipulate, master or compel things, but instead builds things in their essential nature, i.e., in relation to the fourfold tough, human desire to use, obtain and manipulate objects is a constant threat. ¶ In short, Dasein’s Being-in-the-world is a Being-with others: it shares its world with beings that genuinely are its Others – beings capable of inhabiting or dwelling within that same world. ¶ A man dwells in a world that he has been thrown into until death. he must be there “To be a human being means to be on earth as a mortal.” aiteellinen reaktioni Heideggerin esseeseen ’Building Dwelling Thinking’ – digitaalisesti manipuloituja valokuvia ja yksi piirustus (piirustuksen otsikko on Fourfold – ’Nelinkertainen’. ¶ Hiekkatorni muistuttaa Baabelin tornia – digitaalinen kuva, jonka otin vähän aikaa sitten Hollannin rannikolla. ¶ Baabelin tarina kertoo metaforan kautta teknologian vaaroista. those who came from the sea d he images presented are part of two Landscape Installation Series that were loosely based on the Sumerian Enuma Elish — Epic of Creation. It is the story of Tiamat, the Primordial Mother of All and the original holder of the Tablets of Destiny. With Tiamat as the source of all that he is, Apollo makes his appearance as emerging from the Dolphin Sea. ¶ In the early days of the earth there was much chaos, but in this bubbling uncertainty was the universal chaos of original creation. Humanity did not yet exist and the earth itself was only beginning to ready itself for humanity’s arrival. The churning steaming ocean was a wild place, unpredictable were the forces that gathered, overlapped, searching for a place to reveal themselves. ¶ The embodiment of this primordial chaos was, at one time, known to the universe as Tiamat, the Grand Protector and Creator of all that was and was to be. Tiamat is the most ancient holder of Knowledge and as we move towards the hopeful, but not guaranteed, evolution of humanity, a return to the most ancient creative being appears intrinsically connected to this transition. She asks to be Known and asks to be Shown. As we re-turn our eyes to the original Mother, we come closer to understanding the conflicting and confusing nature of humanity’s origins.
