Editor’s Letter We celebrate victories in all its forms in this issue. The women on the cover are making political history by being the first (Sharice Davids), the youngest (Alexandria OcasioCortez), or the only (Michelle Lujan Grisham) in their position. We all look forward to the Christmas holidays when we can celebrate with family and friends. That said, we include all kinds of holiday dishes, hobbies and even travel options. Some people may avoid going further north for a vacation during the winter, but Whistler Resort in Canada may change your mind. Read all about the cool – literally – activities in our travel section. In the world of entertainment, we feature Victoria Loke from “Crazy Rich Asians,” one of the most popular movies this year. Loke’s professional journey should provide inspiration for aspiring actors. We also include former Susan G. Komen executive vice president and chief marketing officer Katrina McGee and her goal to bring personal growth to women everywhere through her Loving On Me workshops. Similarly, women’s studies author Becca Anderson offers us some badass affirmations and advice from badass women.

hers-magazine.com

We review two of her latest books that are filled with clever quips, powerful pointers and informative biographies. While some women need hope to celebrate life, others need hope to cope with loss. We cover the latter in a bereavement boot camp offered by Carole Brody Fleet. Celebrating the holidays not only includes food, family and friends, but it also includes fashion. We include the exclusive designs of three amazing female designers. They range from business and casual looks to cocktail dresses and evening gowns. Most importantly, we want you to begin to focus on your own outlook for the future. So we remind you to participate in our annual #TheMeEyeSee campaign by posting your declaration for the future. Remember, you must first see it, say it, and then be it. Look out for our upcoming issue which is a special December edition on food, which we all will get more than enough of during this season of festivities. Enjoy,

#themeeyesee Self-Awareness for 2019 and Beyond

h

ers magazine wants to remind women: “What you think of yourself is more important than what others think of you.” using #themeeyesee hashtag to promote greater self-awareness, the magazine wants women to begin to visualize, declare and pursue the person they can rightfully become. We believe that the way we see ourselves propels us on the path to who we will ultimately become, driving our thoughts, actions, habits, and lifestyles. Thus, declaring an intention of our ideal selves can motivate us to achieve our goals.

Ask Yourself: Am I living up to my core values and personal mission? Am I being a person others can respect? Am I respecting my body the way I should?

#themeeyesee is a movement with the purpose of encouraging and challenging women to become the people they want to be in the new year and beyond. This is not a New Year’s resolution, but a public pact and declaration. We will feature the posts on the Hers magazine website, #themeeyesee website and Hers magazine social media platforms: www.themeeyesee.com www.facebook.com/hersmagazine www.twitter.com/hersmagazine www.instagram.com/HersMagazine www.google.com/+HersMagazineOnline

Am I meeting the expectations I set for others? Am I using my talents fully? Am I performing at my peak capacity? Am I giving my family and friends my most and my best? Am I engaging in worthy activity? Am I making a positive impact on the world? Am I on the path to my preferred future? Readers and others should post a short video or a selfie online with the hashtag to declare their unique vision for the future. They should then also challenge 5-7 friends in the post to make their own #themeeyesee declaration and agree to be accountability partners for 2016 to ensure their success.

Victoria Loke Opens Up About Life After the Hit ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ B Y N I K I TA KA N E V

C

razy Rich Asians,” the movie based on Kevin Kwan’s novel of the same name, has emerged as one of this year’s biggest box office hits, grossing more than $200 million worldwide and boasting a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes almost three months after its release. It made history as the first major Hollywood film to star an all-Asian cast in 25 years, the last movie to do so being “The Joy Luck Club.” It has also spawned many discussions on the lack of ethnic diversity and representation in Hollywood, as well as raising awareness for the Asian community as a whole. Victoria Loke plays the character Fiona Tung-Cheng. Born in Singapore, where the film takes place, Loke began her acting career after moving to New York. While she has starred in theatrical productions, short films and music videos, “Crazy Rich Asians” is her first role on the bigscreen. Hers caught up with Victoria to see what kind of roles she would like to see emerge for Asians in Hollywood, what she absolutely can’t live without and what she has in store for the future. Hers Magazine: In the movie, we see a wide range of characters and personalities. Which character from ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ do you most identify with?

erman designer Kim Tiziana Rottmüller leads us through a spiritual story for the collection “Oblivion.” The collection takes inspiration from a seductive witch, which is a symbol for our transcendental self and inner magical power. Lilac, the color for spirituality, brings light into the collection. Whereas, black is used to submit the unknown, mysterious darkness. Experiments with volume are revealed through oversized hoods and layers of ruffles. The standout look is a bubblegum pink oversized woolen jumper, embellished with mysterious tarot cards that weave in and out of the knit.

+ HER HER-ISCOPES

Her-iscopes: Career

Predictions from the Stars Happy birthday, Scorpio and Sagittarius!

SCO R PIO October 23-November 21 Strengths: Passionate, loyal, creative, resourceful Weaknesses: Jealous, nosy, obsessive You’re already a highly emotional person, and with all the retrogrades that happened this summer, things were majorly shaken up. Fortunately, things will mellow out after the Sun moves into your sign on October 22nd. Around the time of your birthday, you’ll turn into a charm bomb. Leave your normal strategizing behind and have some fun. Leverage the holiday season to be a memorable, but not sloppy, feature at holiday parties. When your dream opportunity presents itself, you’ll then have met a guy who knows a guy who works at the dream company, plus your colleagues will be happy to serve as references because they know you have a great personality as well as a good work ethic. SAGI TTARIUS November 22-December 21 Strengths: Enthusiastic, generous, adventurous, funny Weaknesses: Impatient, perfectionist, blunt Venus, your planet of work, is in retrograde through midNovember, so use this time to reflect upon this past year at work, because this next year is going to rock! Starting November 8th and lasting until December 2019, Mars will be in your sign, giving you a tenacious confidence to go after your goals. Combine this with Jupiter beginning a new 12year cycle in November and you will become unstoppable. Reflect especially on work relationships present and past because you will need people in your corner next year (other than Jupiter, the Roman king god, and Mars, the Roman god of war). Apologize, forgive, befriend, or burn bridges as need be in order to give yourself a fresh start for your birthday.

CA PR I CO R N December 22-January 19 You’re in a mood to trim excess from your life, Capricorn, and with it will come clarity on your true dreams and values. But conventional messages on trimming the fat might not ring true for you. Maybe you need to step back from social media because it’s not making you happy—or maybe you need to grow a following to wow your next investor. Focus on what’s true for you—not your mom, not your SO, not a mean girl from high school you want to prove you’re better than—you. AQ UA R I US January 20-February 18 Aquarius, you’re about to get lucky. Get your mind out of the gutter—lucky in your career. Social seeds you sow in November will start to sprout in December and bloom and bear fruit all throughout 2019. As they say in improv comedy, come from a place of “yes.” “Yes” you do want to go to your high school reunion. “Yes” you do want to get coffee with your favorite college professor who’s in town. You’ll be socially burned out by New Year’s, but with so many more people willing to go to bat for you and let you know of new opportunities on the horizon.

hers-magazine.com

+ HER HER-ISCOPES

P I SCE S February 19-March 20 Scorpio being in your sign gives you a take-no-prisoners attitude at the beginning of November. For go-with-theflow, go-along-to-get-along you, this feels so foreign and yet . . . so good? It’s a refreshing break to put your needs first when you usually place your needs after everyone else’s. Use this energy while it lasts to ask for what you need at work— more holiday vacation, perhaps? When the Scorpio energy burns up, Saturn comes in and lets you breathe a breath of fresh air. You will ring in 2019 with fresh energy and zeal.

CA N C E R June 21-July 22 When it comes to work, you’ve been like the Energizer bunny—you’ve just been going, and going, and going . . .To avoid burnout, focus on family and friends this holiday season. They’ve been feeling a little neglected recently. It sounds strange but you won’t feel like you’re “slacking” at work while you find this balance. Your wise judgment calls are still sought after to bring prosperity in 2019. Your work momentum will pick up again at the beginning of 2019— now aren’t you glad you took that well-deserved break?

A RI ES March 21-April 18 In a season that brings people together, your focus should be communication with these people. Venus is in retrograde so communication won’t be all warm and fuzzy, unfortunately, but you’ll learn some hard truths that will help you grow. When Venus leaves, pragmatic Saturn takes its place, giving you focus. Evaluate your current work situation and see where improvements could be made. Use these truths and your new knowledge to fuel your professional hustle in 2019, which will pay off in more ways than one.

LE O July 23-August 22 Tame the beast inside you right now, Leo, for lions don’t concern themselves with the opinions of sheep. Some work and personal stressors will make you want to roar, but if you look at the big picture and don’t sweat the small things, some problems will take care of themselves. Is the intern being catty? Lead by example of how a professional woman should conduct herself. Let the big plans you’ve been working on purr along in the background and in 2019, you’ll be the cat’s meow.

TAURU S April 20-May 20 A professional shakeup has left you, well shook. Maybe you’ve finally achieved your dream job, only to realize that it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. Maybe you need to literally face the money on an investment that’s costing more than it’s paying off. The end of 2018 is making you more practical than normal, but practical doesn’t necessarily mean cautious, even with your recent setback. Don’t pass up a good opportunity. To paraphrase Coach Taylor, if you approach it with clear eyes and a full heart, you can’t lose.

VIRGO August 23-September 22 Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn align in your sign, making you want to workshop your ideas with others and pick their brains. People will seek your wisdom, too, and you’ll discover you kind of like giving advice. Could you be an advice columnist? Maybe, but definitely look into writing and communication to get your ideas out there. To soothe your inner naysaying that writing is “impractical,” relax and find a low-stakes way to express yourself to your friends and family, like a blog or a TinyLetter newsletter. If anything, you’ll come out of this with a fulfilling new hobby.

GEMINI May 21-June 20 Opportunities sometimes arrive, Gemini, but more often they are created. You’re very creative this fall so as it turns into winter, ride that energy into a hobby outside of work, a new project you’re excited about, or a side hustle to make some extra dough. Entering 2019 will bring you downto-earth about money, so reframe your mindset about “treating yo self ” with material goods and get serious about paying down debt. When you have your creative pursuits fulfilling you in your non-work time, you’ll quickly find you don’t need your pick-me-ups to come from a store.

LI B R A September 23-October 22 It’s time to harvest what you’ve been planting all year, Libra. You might get a prestigious award from your peers, a raise, or a promotion. It’s also time to gently phase out any relationships that aren’t advantageous to you or are actively holding you back. Venus will help you with communication so it won’t be awkward down the line. Your workload will lighten during the holiday season because you’ve streamlined it so efficiently, so use your new time to spoil the people you do love and need in your life.
