Designing a piece, he said, is all about connecting with the client. “It’s more about who they are,” he said, “how a piece will be used. If possible, he will visit clients’ homes to see their environment to discern what kind of person they are. “I have good observation skills and good design skills, and I’m a good listener,” he said. From the preliminary drawings through the construction process, “what’s exciting is the fulfillment of an idea.” While his work is elegant, Tom fully expects his pieces to be used. “I hope people have a real dialogue with the pieces I do for them,” he said. “That’s what’s great about making a desk; it’s so personal.
