President's Message Reviewing '21 and a look forward to '22 By EUGENE ZOLLINGER President and CEO As I sit down to write this article, it is just two days until Thanksgiving . But by the time you read this (not counting those of you who will have read the online version), it will be the week after Thanksgiving and our attention will have turned to Christmas and all that it takes to get ready for the biggest holiday of the year . I sincerely hope that every one of my Hermann Sons Life friends had a wonderful Thanksgiving full of good food and lots of time spent with family and friends . I also hope that your Christmas celebration – whether it be big or small – will be merry and that it will be full of love and peace . We could all use a lot more of both of those these days . As we move quickly toward the New Year, let’s take a few sentences to look back on a busy and productive year for Hermann Sons Life . Probably the most exciting happening was the premiere of the "Behind the Scenes with Laurence Fishburne" documentary in May . It gave us a chance to deliver our story to a broad

audience and we feel confident it will continue to pay dividends for years to come . Early in the year, the Home Office switched to new accounting software . We have most of the kinks worked out and are looking forward to a smoother budgeting cycle for 2022 . Our campers returned to Comfort this summer and the season proved to be a big success . There were some additional safety measures in place to deal with the pandemic but all in all the season ran smoothly . You can turn to Page 8 of this issue to learn all about the exciting changes that Executive Camp Director Ian Brassett has in store for our campers in 2022 . Speaking of Camp, we held a Membership Appreciation Picnic at Camp in September and it was a big success . We plan to bring it back in 2022 and hope more members will take advantage of this fun-filled day at our beautiful property in the Texas Hill Country . The Marketing Department has been busy with the 2022 campaign that has expanded our reach . I hope you have seen at least one of the three interviews

I did with local San Antonio television stations and that you have seen our ads on social media and local streaming services . We are working hard to spread the word about Hermann Sons Life and the great products and benefits we offer . We want and need to expand the Hermann Sons Life family . Without growth we cannot remain sustainable . Now let’s take a look at 2022 and what we have to look forward to . Of course, the big event next year will be the Convention Assembly scheduled for May 1012 at the Embassy Suites in San Marcos . We have a lot of important business to attend to at this gathering and I hope that all of our eligible lodges are represented . We need your input as we make important decisions about the future of our organization . Of course, we also want to have a little fun . Rest assured that our Convention co-chairs, Cecily Kelly and Samantha Schulmeier Kelley, are putting together a program that will give us time for business and fraternalism . Also, in 2022, the Home Office will be transitioning to a new

Thinking about end-of-life decisions can be emotional and stressful for anyone. Not facing these hard decisions is even worse. I struggled with this section a lot as it’s a delicate topic. We don’t want to dwell on our own mortality, which is why many people never have these discussions, but it’s one of the few things in life we’re guaranteed. The peace of mind you can provide for your loved ones is irreplaceable and can save so much stress and uncertainty. Despite the uncomfortable nature of it, it’s the only way you can be assured your goodbye is on your terms. So often, families will go into debt to plan an elaborate send off, when that is the last thing their loved one wanted. By planning ahead, we’re able to ensure that the arrangements are just the way we want them. This conversation needs to include the people who are the closest to you. Some people to consider talking things over with are: • Spouses • Children • Parents • Siblings • Pastor • Close friends There are so many details to consider, it’s going to take more than a single conversation to work things out. Start with the things that are most important to you. Some things to include would be: • Location and type of service • Public or private service

• Open casket viewing • Organ donation • Burial or cremation (or donating your body for science) • For burials, the location of burial, type of casket, etc. • For cremations, location to keep the ashes or location to scatter them • Preferred music or a particular Bible passage or poem read • Obituary Writing about final arrangements had me thinking about what I would want my obituary to say. For me, I would want to know I made a difference, that I was the best I could be in every aspect of my life as a Christian, mom (and hopefully grandma one day), wife, friend and Hermann Sons Life team member. While the planning is so important, it’s the life lived that matters the most. Hermann Sons Life is here to help you navigate the tough decisions when it comes to estate planning. Give us a call and let us help you get the most out of life.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY Hermann Sons Life is looking for highly-motivated, service-oriented people to sell its whole life, term life and annuity products. Camp News

Exciting changes coming to Camp program By IAN BRASSETT Executive Camp Director I’m excited to be here in Comfort planning for a wonderful summer camp for our junior members. Before I discuss the exciting changes and the added activities at Camp next summer, I’d like to put out a few reminders: • We’re hiring! I will be needing medical staff (RNs, LPNs, EMTs, CNAs). If you, or anyone you know, is a nurse, ask them to reach out to me at 909-3629058 or ianb@hermannsonslife. org. The Medical Staff position is a paid position at Camp and also includes paid tuition for their child(ren). They do not need to be Hermann Sons Life members for a paid role at Camp. • Clay Haley, our wonderful maintenance director, will be retiring in April. We are currently looking for a new maintenance director. The position ideally starts in January. If you, or anyone you know, would fit the bill, let me know at 909-3629058 or ianb@hermannsonslife. org. I’ll happily send along a job description. Housing is available for this position if you, or someone you know, needs to relocate. • Early bird Counselors-inTraining I have begun applying and interviewing for 2022. This is a great program that prepares our junior members not only to be future Camp counselors but also helps them develop wonderful leadership skills. The benefit for the early bird CITs is they will be able to reserve a space in Camp before enrollment opens. • I’ve visited Houston this fall and am looking forward to visiting with the folks in Rutersville on Dec. 4 and in Dallas on Dec. 5. If you want me to come to your lodge to talk summer camp, do not hesitate to reach out. I truly love meeting with the lodges and talking about all the exciting things happening here in Comfort. I can be reached at 909-362-9058 or ianb@hermannsonslife.org.

PROGRAM CHANGES Now that I have seen the Camp in operation for two summers and have two summers worth of camper and parental surveys, I and the staff are ready to make a change to the daily program which we believe will improve the quality of the summer camp experience. Our campers love the evening activities, the food and the counselors. The ratings on the daily activities are not as good as we want to see them. This coming summer we are adding kayaking at both camps. We are also adding golf for the Riverside campers. This summer we will also be changing how the campers select their activities. In 2022, the daily program will be divided into two parts. The SPECIALTY PROGRAM is the traditional Hermann Sons Life Camp program. The Camp will schedule each camper three daily activities which will be consistent throughout the week (Monday through Thursday). HALF THE DAY WILL STAY THE SAME. The campers will still select their six favorite activities before Camp begins. Before the camper arrives, our goal will be to give the campers their top three activity choices. Again, this is the traditional way campers have selected their activities. Some activities will only be available in the Specialty Program. Examples include the Challenge Course, rocketry and kayaking. New for 2022 will be the ELECTIVE PROGRAM. This program will allow the campers to choose two electives each day. Maybe the campers want to hang out with a new friend or sibling. Perhaps they want to try an elective for the first time. Perhaps they are having a bad day, and simply want to attend the elective where their favorite counselor is teaching. The electives will be typical camp offerings but designed to be stand-alone, single electives. An example of this would be Dance. As a Specialty Activ-

ity, Dance teaches campers one dance they they work on every day. As part of the Elective Program, we can offer campers a hip-hop class or a line dance class or a ballet class, etc. With an Elective Program we can offer our campers Manis and Pedis on Thursday before the Dance. We can run a Magic the Gathering class. We can offer classes that relate to the theme of the week. Elective offerings can and will be tailored to the campers weekly as well as the individual skills a counselor may bring to the table. Perhaps our campers will want to try rugby, netball or Gaelic football taught by one of our overseas staff members. Perhaps we have a counselor that knows martial arts or one that can juggle. WHY ARE WE CHANGING THE DAILY PROGRAM IN 2022? MORE ACTIVITY CHOICES FOR THE CAMPERS. The ability to select on a daily basis half of their daily activities will offer campers immediate gratification and will allow the campers to participate in up to 11 daily activities throughout the week rather than just six activities. CAMPERS CAN TRAVEL WITH NEWLY-MADE FRIENDS. When selecting their activities every day, many more campers will travel in small groups/packs, usually from their own dorm. However, it is probable that campers may select to hang out with their cousins and siblings. CAMPERS CAN BE AS ACTIVE OR CHILL AS THEY LIKE ON A DAILY BASIS. It may be a particularly warm week and campers want more pool or crafts time. We may have a camper who is not feeling especially up for an active schedule. This program allows them to change their schedule to suit their mood. AS A CAMP WE BECOME MORE RESPONSIVE TO THE CAMPERS’ NEEDS. By tracking the numbers at the activities, we can add more archery and riflery classes throughout the week, respond positively to a camp-

er’s request for an activity not scheduled on Monday by adding it on Tuesday and Wednesday. We can add Manis and Pedis on Riverside, for example, to Thursday’s schedule to give the girls more time to prepare for the dance and more time to hang out with their little sisters. AS A CAMP WE CAN OFFER A WIDER VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES. Including one off, unique activities. The core of our summer staff will still be made up from our incredible staff pipeline of CITs to Junior Staff to Counselors. This is incredibly important for our Camp to continue nurturing our young members. Every year that passes, many of our junior members have ever busier summer and have so many commitments that leaves us, as a Camp, with the issue of staffing a freechoice program with barely enough staff. This would not be an issue with a cabin structured program. But that’s not what our campers want. As I mentioned earlier, we will be having overseas counselors in the dorms this summer. We’re very excited for the cultural exchange that will be taking place in the cabins. Staff will be coming in from Australia, England,

Wales, Ireland, Germany and more! This will give us a fuller, more consistent staff throughout the summer. HELPING HANDS I’ve received a few calls from lodges asking if there is anything their lodge can help us with for next summer. I love this sense of community and appreciate whatever the lodges can do. If any of your members are planning on updating their furniture, I’m looking for some gently used couches for our staff lounges (we can pick up.) Also, we are adding golf to the program on Riverside and will need some pitching wedges, 7 irons and drivers. If your members are upgrading their golf equipment over the holidays we can certainly use the help in that area. OUR ANNUAL VOLUNTEER WORK DAY is scheduled for April 23, 2022. Medical Notes The dawn of a new year is a great time to take stock of the year that just passed and set goals for the next 12 months. Resolutions focused on improving personal health are especially popular, and for good reason. Improving one’s overall health can have positive implications for years to come. Even with the best intentions, resolutions have historically proven hard to keep. Simplify-

ing health-based resolutions can lead to a higher success rate and a healthier you. • Walk more. It is easy to get preoccupied with the “10,000 steps per day” mantra that many people follow and that certain fitness trackers promote. Walking 10,000 steps daily, which equates to roughly five miles per day, is a healthy goal, but it may not be realistic for everyone. Take stock of how many steps

you currently take each day, and then resolve to walk 2,000 more. As your body acclimates to walking more, add another 2,000 steps, continuing to do so until you reach 10,000 steps. • Learn something new about being healthy. Informed health decisions require gaining a greater understanding of your body. Rely on a reputable source to learn more about how to be healthy.

• Spend less time on social media. Staring at your phone or tablet for multiple hours browsing tweets or checking messages might not be the best thing for your physical and mental health. Browsing the internet may take up time that could be better spent engaging in physical activity. According to Dr. Elia Abi-Jaoude, a staff psychiatrist at the Hospital for Sick Children and Toronto Western Hospital,

various studies have shown how excessive social media usage can adversely affect relationships, sense of self, sleep, academic performance, and emotional well-being. • Eat more whole foods. Whole foods, including vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and fish, contain various nutrients the body needs to function See MEDICAL, Pg. 13

Medical Notes Cont’d. from Pg. 12 at peak capacity. These foods may help reduce the risk of many diseases and help people maintain healthy body weights. Start slowly by introducing a new whole food to your diet each day. • Avoid sweetened beverages. You are what you eat, but also what you drink. A report published in 2006 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found consumption of sugarsweetened beverages, particularly carbonated soft drinks, may be a key contributor in the epidemic of overweight people and obesity. • Find a physical activity you like. Rather than resolving to join the gym or signing up for a 5K because it’s what everyone is doing, find a physical activity you truly enjoy and aim to do it a few times a week. Maybe it’s a sport like tennis or recreational cycling with the family. But if the idea of a gym membership excites you, then by all means sign up. Avoid restrictive health and wellness resolutions that can be unsustainable. By downsizing expectations and taking small steps in route to your goals, you may be more motivated to stay the course and achieve success.

Raffle tickets for the $500 grand prize will be $5 each and tickets for the in-house raffle, which includes prizes such as four day passes to the San Antonio Zoo and a wine class for 20 people, will be $2 or 3 for $5. The lodge’s officers plan to attend the celebration of life for Beverly Hutzler, hosted by her family, on Dec. 12 from 2-4 p.m. at The Hampton Inn and Suites of Boerne. Beverly was a force for change in Bexar Lodge and her community at large, often volunteering at her local retirement home and with the Ronald McDonald House. She was a kind, strong woman who used her talents to uplift, aid and inspire others. Her family asks all those who wish to attend to RSVP to 214437-4908 and to wear casual attire. – Reporter
