arvey Couch was 13 years old and dirt poor when Henderson State University came to be. Thirty-five years and two careers later, things had changed for Couch. He served on the school’s board and gave generously to the endowment fund. Couch believed in the mission of HSU, and Entergy is proud today to continue his legacy of support. Couch grew up on a family farm, and his life experiences in his first 18 years gave him an acute appreciation for the value of three things: hard work, integrity and education. Hard work dominated his waking hours, and integrity was deeply ingrained in him from an early age. But, for the most part, formal education was something he missed out on until his family moved to Magnolia from Calhoun. In Magnolia he had the good fortune to be taught by Pat Neff, a teacher who saw great promise in Couch. Neff helped him catch up to the other students and told him something Couch would remember the rest of his life: “Men like you have built empires.” Eventually, Couch did go on to build empires: first a telephone company, then the electricity company that would one day become Entergy. Couch’s life was set on a course to success by the encouragement of his high school teacher and mentor at a critical point in his life. In the same way, Henderson State University has, for 125 years now, been providing young people with the tools and encouragement they need to become extraordinary leaders and difference-makers in society. Congratulations, HSU, on reaching this milestone. But, more importantly, congratulations on the indelible positive influence you have had on more than 30,500 students in your 125 years. Our histories are forever intertwined, and we are pleased to have been a fan and a supporter almost from the beginning.

or 125 years, our beloved university has transformed the lives of generations of young people who dared to believe that their lives could be better if they attained a higher education degree. They came because they knew Henderson would provide them with an opportunity. They came to a place that believed in them, encouraged and supported them, developed them into educated citizens, and sent them forward to be leaders across our country and in their communities and homes. I was one of those students. As I reflect on Henderson’s impact on my life, I realize just how blessed I am to be a Reddie. As a young boy growing up in Blytheville, Ark., I never imagined that I would attend, let alone graduate from, a university. Henderson afforded me that opportunity, and I will be forever grateful. As we celebrate the 125th anniversary of Henderson State University, let’s remain forever mindful that the Heart of Henderson lies in our enduring commitment to provide an opportunity for young people who desire to become educated members of our society. Seeing students transform before our eyes during their journey on our campus is truly remarkable. It is what makes us uniquely Henderson. Our students may sometimes arrive as unpolished jewels, but they are ours and we will teach them. This is our legacy, and we are extremely proud of it. On behalf of Reddies everywhere, I salute Henderson State University for 125 years of transforming the lives of the many students we have been so blessed to serve. You will forever stay in our hearts.

HENDERSON STATE UNIVERSITY

F

ounded as a religiously affiliated liberal arts college, Henderson State University has transformed over the years. When instruction began at Arkadelphia Methodist College in September, 1890, classes were held in the local public school building and students boarded with local families. Construction on a major building to house the new college began soon after the founding of the institution, and the facility was occupied by the end of the first academic year. After the tragic fire that struck the campus on February 3, 1914, the Henderson-Brown community came together and worked to ensure that their college would endure for future generations. The support of both the Henderson-Brown community and the greater Arkadelphia community saved the college again in 1929 when the Methodist Church began plans to create a single university in Little Rock and withdraw funding from the three institutions that it operated. This was prevented by the quick actions of alumni and supporters of the college who secured the transfer of the campus to state control. As a public institution, Henderson State Teachers College continued to offer quality liberal arts degrees while preparing students to serve as educators across the state. The lessons learned by these students while at Henderson served them well in the classroom, on the playing field, in business, and in military service. More changes came to the institution in the form of new names and roles. Today the mission of Henderson State University is to provide a learning environment that prepares students for a lifetime of intellectual and personal growth in a global society. The Henderson experience bridges students’ academic aspirations to career success by integrating professional studies and the liberal arts. It proudly continues the traditions that began 125 years ago, welcoming students to the School with a Heart.
