I

s there anything more magnificent than the month of September in Joburg? I think not. Spring is finally here, and I think I can speak for most of us and say that perfect temperatures, heaps of sunshine, flowers everywhere and recharging trips to nature is a welcome friend after the long winter we all just endured. I can’t remember a year where I yearned for spring to come quite like I did this year. With the change of season comes the desire to get out and explore the City of Gold more, so for this issue we’ve featured must-dos to thoroughly enjoy this season. Eating and drinking alfresco tops our list of favourite things to do when the weather warms up, so it’s no wonder our Restaurant of the Month is the newly opened Olives & Plates in Embassy Towers in Sandhurst, where they’ve got all your sun-drenched dining needs covered. You can also get a taste of the high life and sip cocktails in the clouds at the brand-new Olympus Sky Bar at Emperors Palace or enjoy some warm air and gourmet bar snacks at our top picks of bright and breezy bars from Melville to Maboneng. For extra indulgence, we’ve also rounded up the hottest new restaurants trending in Jozi this month – and we’ll have you know that some of them are strong candidates for our best restaurants in the city. On the leisure activities front, we’ve covered why a trip to the beautiful Killarney Country Club is in order this month, whether it’s for sporting, dining or conferencing. We’ve also singled out some unmissable things to do this spring, including my personal favourite – delightfully decadent afternoon tea at 54 on Bath hotel in Rosebank. Another (new) personal favourite of mine in this issue is the first-ever and oh-so-chic Sorbet SK-N salon in Hyde Park Corner. Check out our beauty pages for my review plus our beauty editor’s must-have exfoliators and face masks for Skincare Awareness Month. Other not-to-be-missed features include a one-on-one with Nigerian artist Ayobola Kekere-Ekun whose work made us hungry for more at this year’s RMB Turbine Art Fair – and that’s not (only) because doughnuts and ice creams were the focal point – and homesewn local fashion brands that you just have to check out if you’re on the search for an ab-fab outfit for Heritage Day. Here’s to the beginning of the best season of the year!

Tell us about the Crema dream. Crema was born when Sandy left her long-term job in human resources to pursue an idea that she’d long dreamed of. She approached Tiffany, who she’d met at a spa that she previously managed, who agreed that there was a huge demand to a fill gap in the market. After chatting over lunch, the vision of a lush, classy and personalised nail and beauty lounge that would allow both to be hands-on bosses and working moms came about.

Dubbed one of Joburg’s freshest rooftop venues, it’s the perfect setting for those looking to relax and unwind.

“T

he Olympus Sky Bar is an exciting new entertainment offering at The Palace of Dreams and a welcome addition to the city’s nightlife offerings for those who are always on the lookout for new hotspots,” says Clive Tavener, general manager of Emperors Palace. “The sky bar offers a new premium experience for the city’s socialites who’ll love the new and trendy spot that’s been designed to offer unique experiences to guests.” For those looking for a modern and sophisticated location to host private functions, the venue can accommodate up to 120 guests, making it an ideal destination for everything from birthday parties and corporate launches, to year-end functions and everything in between. Venue hire rates include exclusive use of the rooftop venue as well as access to Emperors Palace’s food and beverage services, complete with hostesses, bartenders and cocktail staff included in the package. Entertainment, including DJs, music artists and bands, can be arranged for group bookings, functions and events at an additional fee. On standard operating days, the Olympus Sky Bar offers an indulgent tapas-style menu that includes a fabulous selection of grilled satay skewers, meze boards and other light meals, while private function clients and groups can choose from a selection of set menus to perfectly complement their event. A fully licenced bar is stocked with premium spirits, wines and the finest local and imported beers along with expert mixologists to whip up a wide range of delicious cocktails. The venue can be accessed by taking the lift up to the rooftop, a short walking distance from the Peermont Metcourt hotel foyer. An entry fee of R150 applies (excluding functions), which includes an opening special drinks voucher to the value of R50. Controlled venue access means guests enjoy a premium experience, complete with designer drinks, a night of lounging around on comfy couches, soaking up incredible views, and enjoying great entertainment provided by DJs on the decks or live music. If the weather turns, there are covered areas and umbrellas that will provide shade from the elements. The look and feel of the venue is based on minimalist décor principles with white chosen as the primary colour in the overall palette that creates an air of contemporary elegance. The design also includes fabric elements in hues of blue and teal to link back into the scheme and aesthetics used throughout the hotel and pool area, both of which are visible from the rooftop. “Much like its namesake, the Olympus Sky Bar makes you feel like you’re on top of the world,” says Tavener. “The space invites guests to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy the city from a unique vantage point. What’s more, we’re thrilled to roll out the red carpet to local socialites, trendsetters, businesspeople and those looking to take some time out.” The Olympus Sky Bar will be open from Fridays to Sundays, a day prior to a public holiday and on public holidays. The venue will also be available for events and functions bookings on certain weekdays. To book an event, call 011 928 1103 or email events@emperorspalace.com. Keep it casual If you’re more of a T-shirt and jeans kinda gal (or guy), Pretty Casual is the brand for you. With a wide selection of comfy yet beautiful pieces, this brand offers the best outfits for those ‘off-duty’ days. From flowery doodles to quirky turtles, their fun designs can’t help but put a smile on our faces. The 90s inspired T-shirts, golfers and dungarees all have a kind of warm nostalgia about them. They’re the sort of the thing you could just throw on, but still feel good in. Plus, the clothes are unisex. Pretty Casual is a small brand that was started by Jess Katz in 2017, but it’s definitely one worth checking out. 1 www.prettycasual.co.za  E @prettycasual   Q @prettycasual_ct

Embrace the sea(son) Satiate all your jewellery needs with Dear Rae. The brand was launched in 2010 by designer Karin Rae Matthee and has some of the most spectacular jewellery we’ve ever seen. They have a number of collections, but Ode to the Ocean is by far our favourite. The inspiration for this collection comes from the sea and the mysteries that lie beneath its surface, so it’s no wonder that all of the pieces are oh-so-whimsical. What makes this collection even more special is that 5% of its profits will be donated to ocean conservation. Each piece is handcrafted by Karin and her team and is available in a choice of sterling silver, gold or rose gold. They also offer a custom design service for wedding and engagement rings. 1 www.dearrae.co.za    Q @dearrae

Sleeping beauties Putting on a pair of new pyjamas may well be the best feeling in the world. Plus, it’s a known fact that you spend a third of your life sleeping, so you may as well look good while you’re doing it. That’s why we adore luxury loungewear brand, BENA. Their sleepwear is influenced by classic tailoring and luxury fabrics and just screams elegance. Xan Fraser is the founder of the company and made sure to keep the modernday working woman in mind when creating the dreamy pieces. That’s why the feminine garments are designed to look every bit as good outside the bedroom, as they do in it.

Back to basics When it’s basics you’re after, look no further than Hannah Lavery. This brand understands the importance of having high-quality essentials, such as a great pair of pants or a stylish camisole to mix and match with other items in your wardrobe. Their garments are simple yet sophisticated and are the kind of thing that will last you for many years to come. Another amazing thing about the brand is that they support slow fashion, making them a great starting point if you’re looking to create a minimal closet or capsule wardrobe. The Hannah Lavery studio is located in Cape Town and everything is made by a team of local women. They also have a store on 4th Avenue in Parkhurst and a gorgeous website for online shopping. 1 www.hannahlavery.co.za  E @hannahlavery.sa  D @hannahl_sa  Q @hannahlavery.sa

The key ingredient, orange oil, is a powerful natural general cleaner, degreaser, deodoriser, polish, antiseptic and stain remover. Add to this a sweet and uplifting natural fragrance and you’ve got an aromatherapy cleaning experience for the conscious home. Products on offer include a convenient all-purpose cleaning spray, a hard-working household cleaning gel, a gently fragrant dishwasher gel and a pH-balanced laundry detergent. Sorbet SK-N Get the glow in your lunch hour

Strapped for time? Make a beeline for Sorbet Group’s first-ever Sorbet SK-N salon to sneak a quickie facial in for a well-deserved self-care session to recharge yourself.

L

iving in Joburg can be tough on your skin with all the pollution and air-conditioned offices. That’s before we even think about dehydration, harsh weather, alcohol, sun exposure and the inevitable passing of time (eek!). Just thinking about what we put our skin through is enough to give you frown lines! Luckily, at the newly opened Sorbet SK-N in Hyde Park Corner, you can get a relaxing, soothing facial massage, some instant radiance, a total skincare overhaul or something a little more intense.

The chic salon boasts understated grey and dusty pink interiors and state-of-the-art treatment rooms and skin technology. There are many skin treatments to pick from for both women and men, but I settled on the Ultra-Hydrating Microdermabrasion (AKA the Silk Peel) with an Exuviance Facial to try and reverse the effects that winter had on my skin this year. The Silk Peel is a resurfacing treatment that combines exfoliation, extraction and infusion all in one step and uses a diamond-tipped wand (yes, you read right) that non-invasively exfoliates the skin. While exfoliating, it also vacuums up debris and infuses the skin with a serum by means of pneumatic pressure. Hello Joburg • September 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

The serum used on me was the Ultra-Hydrating serum (there’s also a Brightening, Pore Clarifying and Vitamin C serum for you to choose from) to help hydrate my skin, eyelids and lips. After the Silk Peel, all excess product left on my skin was wiped up and a Plump Perfect Firming Mask was then applied to help restore lost volume and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. After just 10 minutes, the mask was removed, and a collagen-boosting serum was then applied to keep my skin looking young and vibrant. This was followed up by an eye contour cream and another restorative cream that restores dry, photodamaged skin. The Silk Peel was slightly uncomfortable, but not at all painful. My therapist, Elsabe, was tremendously hands-on and talked me through the entire treatment. What I love about it the most is that it has no downtime depending on your skin sensitivity (I have very sensitive skin and my skin was perfectly fine afterwards) and you can do the treatment every four to six weeks. Treat yourself! If you really want to spoil yourself this month, why not go all out and treat yourself to these tried-and-tested beauty treatments too? Head to Allure Lashes and Aesthetics, hidden in an office park in Bryanston, for a set of envious classic lashes. Louise and her team of experts produce perfectly long, voluminous lash extensions that last up to three weeks. The salon itself is nothing fancy, but the prices are super-reasonable. If you’re a new client, a full set of classic lashes will cost you and R850 and volume will cost R990. After your first visit, the price goes down to R700 for classic and R850 for volume. The intimate spray tanning studio decorated in turquoise and gold uses their own organic, vegan, paraben-free and animal-friendly spray tan solution that comes in seven different colours and owner Jen will make sure you feel as comfortable as possible while she guides you through the movements. A normal spray tan costs R380 (or R410 for guys) with the option of a setting powder applied on top of your tan for an extra R120. The setting powder is the best thing ever – mattifying with a subtle glitter, it makes your tan feel dry and comfortable instantly. here’s nothing quite like an outdoor workout on a sunny day in Jozi. That’s why we’ve partnered with fitness trainer Tebogo Manaka and will be running a series of workouts over the next 12 months. The best thing about these total-body workouts is that you can do anywhere – in your backyard at home or at the beach while you’re on holiday … even in the boardroom during your lunch hour. Hailing from a township on the East Rand called Daveyton, Tebogo is an entrepreneur at heart and has been training religiously since a young age. He holds a Business Degree from the University of Johannesburg as well as a Higher Certificate in Exercise Science from the Health and Fitness Professional Academy (HFPA) in Rivonia. He started off his fitness career by doing house calls before he went on to start working at Virgin Active Sandton on Grayston Drive and hosting big fitness events called Fitness Grind on various rooftop venues in and around Sandton. Since then, Tebogo has worked his way up and started working at Virgin Active Melrose Arch, which forms part of the Classic Collection. However, he says that this career move is still just a stepping stone and that in time, the fitness industry will recognise his name on a global level. Through discipline, consistency and relentlessness, Tebogo constantly aims to reach new heights – and he’s so excited to bring our HJ readers along for the ride! mong our favourite things to do in spring, eating and drinking al fresco tops the list. Luckily, outdoor dining takes on a new meaning at Olives & Plates - Embassy. Upon stepping inside the restaurant, you’ll be captivated by the elegant and alluring space prettied with cream tiles, petrol blue velvet couches, gold light fixtures and vases of fresh blooms throughout. However, the pool deck is really what gives it a wow factor. Grab a table outside on the deck, which looks the background of an influencer’s dream ’grams, and get ready to order up some thirst-quenching summer drinks. In our opinion, there’s no better wine to sip while basking in the sunshine than La Motte Sauvignon Blanc. The restaurant has a superb cocktail and wine list that celebrates all the favourites. If you’re keen for something a bit more extravagant with your meal, there are some lovely champagnes and sparkling wines too.

calamari, grilled chicken skewers, kataifi-wrapped halloumi and falafels. Moving onto mains, classic lunch fixings include the sandwiches, wraps, quesadillas, beautifully presented salads, grills, burgers, souvlakis and pastas. Don’t turn your nose up at the thought of salads – these aren’t your bogus lunchtime leaves. Each salad is packed with local produce and ancient grains, from the dukkah, quinoa, almond-crusted chicken and brinjals salad, to the halloumi, spinach, dates and avo salad. Feeling extra hungry? Swap your salad bowl for the 200g teriyaki salmon or the 250g fillet, both of which we highly recommend. Each dish is served with your choice of carrot and potato mash, sweet potato chips, chips, salad, baby potatoes or roasted vegetables. The salmon, best served seared, is a real winner – it’s flaky, juicy and packed with punchy flavour. The fillet is a close second and goes down a treat with a side of black pepper sauce. We can almost guarantee that you won’t have space for dessert after indulging in one of

these dishes, but a trip to Olives & Plates is never complete without a visit to their ‘Display of Temptation’ cabinet. Take your pick of a selection of freshly baked cakes to take home with you and enjoy later. As if this isn’t enough reason to reserve a table for your next breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner date with the girls or that special someone, the service is faultless – the waiters are knowledgeable and sincere and the hands-on management from the owners doesn’t go unnoticed – and the value for money is impeccable for what you get. Did you go to culinary school? Yes, I attended Silwood School of Cookery in Cape Town where I completed a three-year Grande Diploma. However, I grew up in Joburg in a coloured township called Eldorado Park. This shaped me into the chef I am today – I wanted to impress girls by telling them that I was a chef and wow them with some epic food.

OUR FAVOURITE NEW MENUS FOR WARM, HEARTY DISHES

Hidden inside the InterContinental Johannesburg Sandton Towers, Atrium restaurant has launched a new menu designed to satisfy every palate and appetite. Starters include duck salad with confit duck leg, Thai chicken soup and potato gnocchi with sage beurre noisette, while mains range from a lamb rack with garlic mash to a springbok shank with butternut confit. There’s also a crown of chicken, curry of the day, grilled tiger prawns and a selection of premium aged steaks. Our favourite part of the menu is the dessert section – chocolate fondant and lemon cheesecake are just two of the sumptuous options. What to try: The springbok shank is by far the star of the show. OUR TOP HALAAL DESSERTERIES We’ve got your sweet tooth covered this month! Jasmine Fusion What to expect: Contemporary fine dining fusion What to order: The Flower Brûlée. It’s not an overly sweet crème brûlée you might expect. Instead, it’s reloaded and reinvented with sweet succulent honeycomb pieces and syrupy brittle caramel shards. While you’re at it, why not include a side order of their Turkish delight hot chocolate? What we like: The excellent service What we don’t like: This dessert is almost too pretty to eat! Bismillah Restaurant What to expect: Down-to-earth Indian-style dining What to order: The homemade ice cream at only 15 bucks a scoop. This restaurant had always been a dream of owners Jababul Hoque Bhabu Bhai and Rokeya Begum Rina Hoque and it all became a reality 1997, so you can bet that they know their sweet stuff. LERATO'S CORNER I f you’re looking for a starter kit in becoming a true hipster, this is the brunch spot for you! Jam-packed with residents and skinny jeans, this space will instantly make you feel like a millennial in The Parks – that’s if you manage to get a table (don’t bother calling because they don’t take bookings). It’s also the ideal spot for a Tinder date: pretty enough if you decide to forgo the date and dreamy enough if you choose to stay with Romeo.

A candid review … THE

WHIPPET MELVILLE

Now, if there’s one Melville eatery that precludes a luxurious ambience, The Whippet is the standout. You’re greeted by freshsmelling rosemary and invigorating thyme (grown in their rooftop garden and available to purchase), quirky vegetable wallpaper and rays of sunshine. One thing is for certain: it’s a beautiful, design-forward, free-flowing space. The new space has replaced a once grungy, gritty shopfront with hues of pink and green pastels, lavishly soft velvet armchairs, a pressed herb glass mosaic, hanging bouquets filled with pockets of proteas and bamboo ceilings. Sadly, your best bet is to down a few mimosas before brunch because the food isn’t as charismatic as the décor. The menu features innovative dishes like the Broccolini Benedict, Bunny Chow Florentine and Breakfast Gnocchi, but it doesn’t deliver in flavour. All glitz but no glam! I ordered the Pink Grapefruit Smoothie Cup (R65), Salad Flatbread with green pesto, mozzarella and artichokes (R88), Kimchi Fried Rice (R88) and Vegetarian Chilli Bowl with butternut squash stewed in a base of tomatoes (R85). I feel that the menu isn’t priced gently enough to get away with such puny portion sizes and unseasoned dishes, but let’s hone in on the smoothie cup. A healthy, wholesome blood orange yoghurt smoothie served in a ‘fruit bowl’ with granola and berries – what could possibly go wrong? Well, it’s awkward to eat because the fruit bowl it comes served in is an orange peel! It’s a laughable ‘dish’ if you can call it that because this is a serving for the ants (anorexic ants, that is). I’m all for healthy eating and portion sizes, but for R65 I think any customer more than half a shot glass size of gluggy smoothie, 20g of granola and three blueberries. If that doesn’t leave you feeling ripped off enough, be sure to pick up a jar of their cocoa buckwheat granola on your way out at R120 a pop. The Whippet Melville needs a good whipping!

Dolci Café, run by chef Jackie RighiBoyd and her husband, wine aficionado Clayton Boyd, has unveiled a new wine cellar that features both well-known labels and some hidden gems. We often choose our wine before our meals and, likewise, we often choose a bottle to share on the table and then choose to eat very different meals. That’s where Clayton comes in – he’ll happily help you select a wine style for your personal palate that will go with all the meals on your table. One of his favourite wines on the list is the Antica Vigna Valpolicella imported from Italy. At only R270 a bottle, it’s certainly one of the best quality-versus-price wines on offer! THE JOZI HIT LIST What’s hot? Where’s great? Err, this lot!

Every month, a frankly crazy amount of brilliant new cafés and restaurants arrive in the City of Gold, which makes whittling a shortlist of best newbies down to a manageable size a challenge, but here it is. The hottest new restaurants trending in Jozi this month are a stack lineup of openings with strong candidates for our favourite restaurants in the city.

SEX,DRUGS AND RICE PAPER ROLLS Whether you’re a dim sum daredevil or a play-

it-safe type when it comes to Asian fusion food, grab your chopsticks and ready yourself for some of the tastiest baos, dumplings, pho and bowls of stretchy, slippery noodles in town at Saigon Suzy’s second restaurant, Saigon Suzy Cedar Square. Much like its Parkwood sister, the space is totally Insta-worthy, decorated with gorgeous parasols suspended from the ceiling, a backdrop of Saigon Suzy’s namesake’s mural and pink neon signs. Our top recommendation is to load up on all the pork belly baos you can handle at this trendy hotspot. Fluffy on the outside, warm, sweet and sticky on the inside, these barbecued delights with cucumber and peanuts are the epitome of the perfect pork bao, while the rest of the bao menu is delicious and arrives quickly. The zesty wok-fried calamari with mini, chilli, lime and coriander, crispy tofu with spring onion and mushroom broth, and soft, pillowy steamed chicken and prawn dumplings are also worth ordering.

THE SEXIEST SEAFOOD IN TOWN Sometimes, trawling Joburg, it can feel like

there aren’t that many fish in the sea. Good seafood is hard to come by – well, that was the case until The Prawnery Bistro & Bar opened in Illovo, at least. Whether you fancy a fishy bite or like to savour your seafood, make a beeline for this bright, open-fronted prawn bar and fishmonger that’s thrillingly informal with a double-sided menu of prawn and other seafood dishes. To nibble, order a few of meze – the lightly battered rock shrimp, crisp battered calamari, deep-fried soft shell crab and Swedish Skagen. For mains, you simply must try their signature prawns, which are grilled and served with your choice of lemon, garlic and parsley or peri peri sauce. There’s also a 1kg queen prawn special that will set you back R385, which we think is a fantastic deal seeing as you get 16 prawns. Unfortunately, there are no desserts, but the giant frozen margaritas sure make up for it! Illovo Junction, corner of Oxford Road & Corlett Drive, Illovo m 060 528 7958 Q @theprawnery

ALet’sBRIGHT NEW LOOK be frank – Voodoo Lily needed a revamp.

In fact, they were desperate for one. Cue Larry Hodes, restauranteur behind Arbour Café & Courtyard and Calexico, and his wingman Joshua Simon who also happens to be the head chef. With a little voodoo, they’ve transformed the once stale location into a va-va-voom New York-style restaurant. The 160-seater indoor-outdoor space is stunningly decorated with chic wallpaper and exclusively curated mosaics, but what’s sure to create the most buzz is the backbone of the restaurant, the little library-cum-workstation nook. And, being located in the snooty suburb of Birdhaven, we’re sure it will quickly become one of the coolest places to dine at with Scruffy. The dishes on chef Joshua’s menu stem from his travels around the world, from a loaded latke recipe from bubbe to a gnocchi broccolini that he stumbled upon while yachting. OF THE MONTH Drumshanbo Gunpowder Gin

Curiouser and curiouser

I

n the province of Connacht in the West of Ireland, on the shores of Lough Allen, at the foothills of Sliabh an Iarainn, lies the tiny rural village of Drumshanbo. There, you’ll find PJ Rigney’s The Shed Distillery where medieval copper pot stills are used to fuse oriental botanicals with the local Irish ones. As it turns out, they get on very well indeed. The result of this passionate exploration is Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin – unique, extraordinary and remarkable. In fact, it’s been voted best gin by the Irish! If you’re looking for a story, Drumshanbo Gunpowder Gin is the real deal: the curious mind of PJ Rigney assembles 12 botanicals from across Asia and Ireland and slow-distils them by hand in a medieval copper pot gin still with a unique botanical vapour basket. Eight botanicals are added to the medieval copper pot still, including star anise from China, coriander seed from Romania, angelica root from Germany, caraway seed and cardamom from India, orris root from Morocco, juniper berries from Macedonia and meadowsweet from Ireland. A further four botanicals are then added to the vapour basket, namely gunpowder tea and Chinese lemon from China, oriental grapefruit from Indonesia and makrut lime from Cambodia. This unlikely concoction is left to rest and mature. Then it’s bottled, labelled and box-packed by hand in the remote ‘Shed Distillery’ – the first distillery in the west of Ireland in over 101 years – in the wild and rugged Drumshanbo. The gin was voted ‘Best Irish Gin’ by the people of Ireland in 2016 and 2017 and is roaringly popular in Ireland, owing not only to its enchanting story, but also to its exotic, long and mysterious finish. Aside from the smooth layers of fresh citrus with subtle notes of spicier oriental botanicals and the intriguing gunpowder tea, which gives this Irish curiosity its signature finish, Drumshanbo Gunpowder Gin is beautifully packaged.

mid a sea of artists trying to get their message across, some more successfully than others, comes meaning fatigue. The reality about attending an arts fair, show or exhibition is that it’s subjective. One person’s brushstrokes are another person’s scribble, and what the artist is trying to say is partly irrelevant because how it moves the audience is unpredictable and beyond their control. It was all kinds of scrumptious to come across Nigerian-born artist Ayobola Kekere-Ekun’s work that landed its intended message boldly and deliciously for us with her combined unique style of quilling (a technique of working with paper), acrylic pigments and fabrics, and her daring commentary on Nigerian society. Her series titled ‘E No Concern Me’, which is pidgin English for ‘it doesn’t concern me’ or ‘it’s not my problem’, is a comment on society – in this case Nigeria – which as a result of various circumstances and infrastructure inevitably breeds people who are constantly in survival mode.

Ayobola Kekere-Ekun

Ayobola Kekere-Ekun was one of few artists at this year’s RMB Turbine Art Fair whose work made us hungry for more – and that’s not because doughnuts and ice creams were the focal point of her series of work that was on display.

40

Ayobola is now firmly on our radar. Having recently taken up residence in Joburg to pursue a PhD in Art and Design at the University of Johannesburg, she says there are a lot of similarities between the art scenes in South Africa and Nigeria. “They’re both very vibrant and consistently active – something is always opening or happening. I’d say the major difference is that the South African art scene is more ‘mature’ and more ‘structured’, which serves it well within the context of the global art ecosystem. Lagos is far more chaotic than Joburg and, ironically, safer,” Ayobola explains. She says her biggest adjustment was to the change in weather and climate. As for her personal inspirations, Ayobola finds meaning in the stories she hears, reads or experiences, which could mean that Mzansi will feature in her next installation of work – if we make a big enough impression, of course. For now, she intends to continue working on her degree and to keep exploring the South African art scene. Q @ayobola.k

DUNKIN’ MORE THAN DOUGHNUTS Meet Nigerian artist

Ours is a world where thriving and being happy is secondary to ‘acquiring stuff’ to stave off inequality and provide some kind of security. In Ayobola’s own words, “The junk food becomes a visual marker for consumerism that fuels that faux security. It’s also pretty poetic that junk food in Nigeria is actually rather expensive and it’s a treat for the most Nigerians. It’s a status symbol literally made up of empty calories.” The series, which showcases women wearing headphones and eating ice creams, lollies and bubblegum, perhaps symbolic of their deafness to their surrounds, is a comment on how junk food consumerism becomes an indirect mode of the privileged expressing that society’s problems are ‘not theirs’.

Finally, something that we’ll rush out to see again – soon!

W

e’ve seen some bad to average comedy lately, so it was a real treat to watch 90 uninterrupted and hilarious minutes of Pieter-Dirk Uys (PDU) and Evita Bezuidenhout plus a little David Attenborough and Pik Botha on stage in the satirist’s new one-man show #HeToo. Created to say the things that PDU couldn’t – first for a newspaper column and then a TV show – Evita Bezuidenhout has been in the lives of South Africans since 1980; as a wife, a grandmother, a cadre and arguably one of the most famous white women in the country. PDU finally shared the stage with Evita at the Pieter Torien Theatre last month, unleashing one helluva set for the best-known 73-year-old in the town of Darling. As PDU did his makeup on stage and

transformed from one character to another, he invited the audience on a personal reflection of his and Evita’s careers; an opportunity to reflect on South Africa’s painful but beautiful history. PDU addressed the woman who, albeit non-existent, during the height of the 1980s surpassed his own identity to a degree. Even Tata Mandela asked to meet Evita and not PDU when he first met the comedian. The show was sidesplitting, and while PDU suggested in parts that it was all about the silliness, we know that good comedy is so much more. It’s a dissection of any society’s past – the good, the bad and the ugly. In many ways, this show felt like PDU’s salute to both his career and South Africa. As he says, “When I look at the world, I can’t help think to myself, I’d rather be here than anywhere else.”

MEET ARTIST DBONGZ ...the winner of the glass recycling Art for Glass Graffiti Competition

The Glass Recycling Company (TGRC) has announced the winner of their inaugural Art for Glass Graffiti Competition, the exceptionally talented Dbongz Mahalathi, who’s won R30,000! TGRC hosted the competition to draw Jozi residents’ attention to the numerous glass banks in the city. The top three finalists had to paint various glass banks in Joburg, and their entries then went through a gruelling judging process. Second place was awarded to Durban resident, the Damn Vandal and third place to admired artist, Mars.

42

Dbongz, as he’s known, is a self-taught, graffiti/ street artist from Mohlakeng in the west of Joburg. He started participating in graffiti and street art in 2008 when he first came to the city to attend university. He fell in love with the vibrance Hello Joburg • September 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

it provoked in mundane spaces. He’s well-known for his large-scale portraits. Shabeer Jhetam, CEO of The Glass Recycling Company, commented on the process of selecting a winner: “It wasn’t an easy task with so many talented graffiti artists entering the competition and a phenomenal line-up of the three finalists. The artworks showcased by the finalists on our glass banks was incredible. To help us select the final winner, various criteria and factors were considered, including use of colour, environmental consideration, overall likeability, creativity and technique.”

He continued, “We feel that Dbongz is a young artist who really understood the message that we need to get across. He showcased his talent and creativeness on the glass banks while making the purpose of a glass bank clear.” Glass banks that have been painted include one on Bompas Road in Dunkeld, Moyo at Zoo Lake, Cnr Café in Craighall Park, Macy’s Spar in Alberton, an Engen garage on Malibongwe Drive and a Caltex garage on Cedar Road. 1 www.tgrc.co.za E @theglassrecyclingco D @tgrc

For the last two weeks of the month, you’ll be able to keep busy every day marching through conventions alongside cosplayers (dressed up as their favourite superheroes in handmade costumes) or watching competitive gamers battle it out on stages for prize money. It’s time to entertain your inner geek!

As the month draws to a close, you may feel a little ‘geeked out’, which means it’s the perfect time to put your feet up and watch the new series on Amazon Prime called The Boys. The show explores the darker world of superheroes when a group of vigilantes bandy together to try stop corrupt superheroes. Explore the magnetism of

MAURITIUS

...and create stories with the family to tell for a lifetime! All eyes are on this island destination that’s clearly overtaken the other star players within the Indian Ocean – and there’s good reason for it.

M

auritius is a mere four-hour flight from OR Tambo International Airport (kids under 12 fly for free on Air Mauritius), neither a visa nor shoes are required and once you’re there, you won’t want to stop frolicking – and the good news is you won’t have to! It’s barefoot luxury in its finest form across the pillowy soft sand. As you drift off into this isle for sweet relief, you’ll quickly find a pertinent balance within. WHEN TO TRAVEL With the fluctuating exchange rate, Mauritius can be steep for our humble rand – so why not book your holiday in their low season, which is much more affordable? June and July are the ‘coldest’ months of the year – and by that we mean 25°C to 26°C. Plus, it’s school holidays during this time of the year, so booking during winter is a hands-down winner!

YENTL PALMER

Whether you’re lusting after waist-length, beachy summer waves or just want a half-decent ponytail for once in your life, hair extensions can be an instant solution to all your long hair issues. Meet Yentl Palmer, owner of Hair Extension Experts and managing director of Hairtalk Extensions Africa, who’s been helping clients by creating Rapunzel-like hair for eight years now.

What prompted you to open Hair Extension Experts? My goal when opening my salon was to create a trusted place where ladies needing hair extensions and hair enhancement could turn to. I went through a difficult time myself trying to find good quality extensions at a reasonable price with consistently good installations that didn’t damage my own hair, so my business strives to offer the best quality, most professional installations at a reasonable price.

any damage when it’s installed by us or a qualified partner salon that we’ve trained and certified. What do people need to know before getting hair extensions? Extensions aren’t a wash and wear product! They take twice the amount of time to style and need to be looked after more carefully than your own hair. Also, it’s essential to do maintenance every six to eight weeks to ensure that your own hair doesn’t get damaged. Another thing to bear in mind is that you get what you pay for, so spending less almost always results in disappointment. We have options ranging from R4,000 to R8,000, which is very reasonable considering the hair quality.

What services do you offer? Three different types of hair extension systems, female hair thinning solutions like toppers and temporary options to enhance your hair for a night. We also offer salon services like colour and keratin smoothing treatments to our hair extension customers. What’s the best type of hair extensions to get? The type that don’t cause any damage to your own hair. For extensions to be gentle to your own hair, they need to be installed perfectly by an experienced professional. My personal favourite are our ultra-thin Petit Tape Extensions from Germany – they’re soft, bendable and discreet. Large, thick tapes can be just as damaging as glue-in methods if they’re not flexible and are difficult to remove. I’ve been travelling extensively through China, India and parts of Europe since 2010 to learn about hair quality and how to test it to discover the suppliers that I now import from directly. I have exclusive rights for Sub-Saharan Africa for the best product I’ve come across called Hairtalk Extensions from Germany. What’s the number-one concern clients have? They’re most concerned that extensions will damage their own hair, which is a legitimate concern. Most hair extension systems do cause some form of damage, and when they’re not installed correctly, even gentle systems can cause harm. We guarantee that the Hairtalk Extensions system doesn’t cause m 072 995 0267

What type of hair loss problems can hair extensions help with? While extensions can’t solve hair loss, they can hide it while a medical professional is working on solving the cause of the problem. We have female toupee systems, toppers, custom toupees and invisible extensions that can hide just about every form of hair loss. Dr Elbrecht, a GP based in Strubens Valley, has helped me and some of my clients to improve hair loss caused by autoimmune conditions through diets and supplements. How can you determine why your hair is falling out? If your hair is suddenly shedding or balding, it’s an indication of an underlying imbalance in your body. I’m a firm believer is solving the root cause of problems, so I’d advise going through a process of elimination to figure out the root cause. Firstly, research the medications you’re on to see if there are hair loss side effects. Interestingly, even the birth control pill can cause hormonal changes that affect hair growth in some cases. Secondly, speak to your GP about running blood tests like iron levels, thyroid hormones and androgen levels as male pattern can affect females too if their androgenic hormone levels are higher than they should be.

 Favourite hair care product at the moment: KMS California Tamefrizz De-Frizz Oil works like a dream on extensions because even though it’s light, you can still feel the silky effects the next day. Most oils I’ve tried on extensions feel great for a couple of hours and then the effect is gone.

 Three things you love: Rooibos tea, trees and before and after transformations.

 Top tip for looking after your new hair: Heat protector is so important! If I’m in a hurry, I can style my extensions in about 15 minutes by drying the bonds and half drying the rest of my hair

 Three things you hate: Self entitlement, littering and medical professionals who don’t try to solve the root cause of a patient’s problems.
