emember, remember the 5th of November is Guy Fawkes Day, and no doubt fireworks will light up the sky. The team at Hello Joburg are avid animal lovers, so we urge our loyal readers to keep their pets indoors, and chat to your local veterinarian about natural, calming remedies you can give them to ease their stress during this time. We’d like everyone – furbabies included – to make it safely through to the festive season.

Now that my PSA is done and dusted, we can get to the really good stuff… the contents of this month’s mag! You may have (you MUST have) noticed the image on our cover. Spectacular, isn’t it? I was fortunate enough to be invited to spend an evening at the gorgeous Palazzo Hotel, and readers… the article just doesn’t do it justice. While I know I was being schmoozed – it comes with the word ‘review’ –never-the-less, this was one of the best hotel visits I have ever had. From the moment I stepped through the doors, I was treated with nothing but respect and warmth. The atmosphere there is incredible, and I highly recommend you check it out whenever you can. Even if it’s just for a splurge-worthy staycation! The latest editions to the Jozi food scene include a new branch for an age-old favourite Mexican restaurant and a delicious new burger bar. If you’ve got a gap in your social calendar, I suggest you grab some mates and head on

over to both spots… your tummy will thank you – and us! Flip on over to our Hotspots section to get all the juicy details. While we’re on the topic of delicious – our Top 5 has covered all the best bakeries in Joburg. You’ve got to flip over to our Dining Out section and store that information somewhere in your brain, because these five places have the very best freshly baked loaves of bread. Another must-read is our spread on Steyn City – the development which sits on the edge of Sandton and connects Fourways to Lanseria, Broadacres and Midrand. It’s gorgeous, a game-changer in community living and our article is jam-packed with interesting information. You definitely want to head over to the Home & décor section for this one. Last but not least, we’ve written a little bit about one of our favourite NGO’s – Operation Hunger. If there’s one article I implore you to read, it’s this one. The Hippo Roller is changing the way rural communities gather water, grow communal vegetable gardens and much more. OH is one of the hardest working NGO’s that we know, and we’d like to gather as much support for them as we can. So go on, flip on over the Leisure Activities and make a difference in someone’s life.

26 Gleneagles Road, Greenside 5 www.jerrysburgerbar.co.za | 1 010 140 5744 |

@jerrysburgerbar

ny well-rounded diet includes a trip to a burger bar. Even model Gigi Hadid agrees, “eat clean, stay fit and have a burger to stay sane!” For the sake of our sanity, we headed to the new burger joint that all Capetonians are raving about… Jerry’s Burger Bar has officially touched down in Jozi town!

This casual style restaurant is slowly garnering a reputation in the city of gold. Every element is home-made and hand-made from scratch, no sugary sauces and no superficial additives or modified foods. Expect fresh, wholesome goodness in a carb loaded brioche bun. Savoring every forkful is mandatory. We found this to be true when it came to the Whoop Whoop burger… 100% vegetarian with a homemade chickpea patty, oozing with cheddar cheese and topped with a mushroom sauce. Gobbled down in thirty seconds, with a side order of sweet potato fries, and a peanut butter and banana shake. It’s a high five in your mouth. They also serve hotdogs, ribs, wings and tacos, and a Jerry’s Original concept of seven deadly sins - mince patties rolled into pockets and stuffed with good stuff. We hear great things about the Ramen Burger - served with ramen noodles and a shoyu glaze, as well as the Philly steak burger with caramelized onions and marinated rump. Soon, they’ll be opening a second store in Thrupps Illovo Centre, and have plans to launch five stores in total in 2017. Watch This Space!

It’s now our favourite branch of the three (the other two being at Hobart Centre, Bryanston and Illovo) - more macho and spicier than ever before. Everything on the menu sounds so sexy, it’s almost impossible to only pick a few plates - but we recommend it. Relish in the spicy quinoa salad with black beans and a chipotle dressing, with an order of the sweet potato & black bean tostadas. Try the mushroom quesadillas with oodles of cheese, the slammin’ salmon, served on a crisp corn tostado and the cream of the crop - the barbeque cauliflower & chickpea tacos. These tacos are seductive, flavorsome and make for the perfect pairing with a tall order of the traditional frozen margarita. The tomato salsa may drip down your fingers, but you won’t give a damn because it’s a guilty pleasure worth devouring! It’s what we love most about Mexican cuisine; it’s easy-eating, delightful drinking and celebratory ingesting. This eatery is a relaxed environment, it’s sleek and sensual, yet never austere. We especially love the open plan setting, romantic and fiery all at once. The ambience retains humility but is still a stimulating atmosphere. It’ll leave you with indelible cravings but hey, don’t take our word for it. Try it yourself !

nyone who’s ever heard of Soweto has definitely heard of Orlando. You’ve heard of its vibrancy, heard the popular songs in dedication to it, heard about the heroes who rose from it… You hear about it, but have probably never made your way there. It’s time you do. In this, the season of sunshine, good vibes and braai meat, it’s time you discover Orlando West for the gem it really is. LOCRATE MARKET On the first Sunday of every month, The Locrate Market runs the neighborhood, and it’s always one for the books! There’s an incomparable community feel to the market, which hosts an array of arts, crafts, food stalls and activities. The market is managed by Doda K, a man who also carries the title ‘DJ’, so the live beats that are dropped on the decks set the tone for the market.

A local businessman and an IT trailblazer, Warren is a quintessential entrepreneur with the drive and humour of Richard Branson, and the wisdom of Jack Welch.

What were the 3 key steps that helped you make your multi-million-rand business? Firstly, I can sell, which means I can always generate business and revenue. Secondly, during the hardest times I never considered giving up. I believe people are either positive or negative thinkers; I’ve always been positive, and knew I could do it. Thirdly, I ran the business like a corporate from day one, with tight controls, strong cash flow management and attention to detail of the entire business process from beginning to end. What’s the next big thing for South Africa? I believe that correction and anti-corruption in government will restore faith in investors and businesses in the country. The brain drain will provide opportunities for people and businesses who remain strong and steadfast, to thrive. If we granted you 3 wishes what would they be? To be able to fly. To have endless wealth. Good health for myself and my family forever.

on’t feel silly if, while pulling up to the Palazzo Hotel in Fourways, you mistake it for a resort along the Vegas strip. The valet will park your vehicle, the concierge will wheel away your luggage, and you’ll be ushered into the lap of luxury.

This venue is spectacular from top to bottom… marble countertops, majestic pillars and seasonal blooms flood the lobby as the impeccably dressed and wellmannered staff cater to your every need. The hotel is only a 15-minute drive from the business hub of Sandton, 40 minutes from OR Tambo International Airport and 20 minutes from Lanseria Airport. With the award-winning Montecasino Entertainment Complex on its doorstep, there’s no lack of entertainment when you step out of the lavish venue. Surrounded by gorgeously green manicured gardens, we’ll forgive you for forgetting that you’re in the bustling suburb of Fourways. In fact, you won’t even hear the traffic or notice the construction on the main road as the soothing bird chirp sounds fill your ears. We highly recommend that you order a cocktail and settle down by the crystal-clear swimming pool – which also has private tented gazebos alongside it, so that you can book a soothing poolside massage. There are four, flexible meeting spaces and event venues on offer that can accommodate up to 50 delegates. Rosa, overlooks the gorgeous rose garden and is perfect for small events, special occasions and intimate functions for between 45 and 70 guests - depending on the style of set up.

To describe the rooms as extravagant would be putting it mildly. There are 246 exceptional rooms to choose from, and the suites are an absolute treat! Magic at Medeo

For mains, we happily tucked into the Agnolotti Pasta – perfect pasta pillows smothered in parmesan cream, tender and smoky braised beef short rib, roasted pine nuts and buffalo mozzarella. We also highly recommend trying the Oven Baked Duck – a beautifully tender leg served with shallots, mushrooms, green beans and pancetta in a sinfully good red wine sauce. Sunday buffet lunches are also available on the last Sunday of each month, and High tea is served daily between 2pm and 5pm. Wine pairing evenings are hosted monthly in Rosa and the Palazzo now also has a special treat just for the ladies – three-course ladies’ lunches, partnering with leading brands, and incorporates presentations, giveaways and prizes!

The Palazzo’s flagship restaurant, Medeo is a treat for your senses. Headed up by Executive Chef Gareth Jordaan, the team at this incredible eatery are dedicated to creating plates of pure ecstasy. The restaurant itself is beautiful; it has low amber lighting and plush seating, giving it an intimate, cosy atmosphere. There are plenty of corners to hide in if you’re after some romance, as well as a lovely deck area that lets you take in the twinkling fairylights that adorn the garden. The menu is inspired by Mediterranean flavours, and includes carefully selected South African and International wines as well as Tsogo Sun’s rare auction wines. Medeo offers al fresco and opulent indoor dining, and we highly recommended you pop out onto the deck for a sundowner before dinner. We opted for the Sriracha Prawn salad for starters; cocktail and tempura prawns, served with a refreshing watermelon gel, feta cheese puree, avo

What started as a hobby, and a way of flashing up his wardrobe soon turned into a profitable income for owner and creative designer, Philani “Njoms” Mhlongo, who started the business in 2015. ‘I attribute the success of the brand to those who believed in my creativity way before the brand was commercialized. More and more people were looking for opportunities to co-create with us because of our agile nature, and ability to interpret their vision.’

To say we’re obsessed with these bags would be putting it mildly. You know how much we love our travels, Hello Joburgers, so the gorgeous leather travel bags are right up our alley. In fact, they’re at the very top of our lust list. A close second has got to be one of the stylish tote bags… big enough for the essentials, gorgeous enough to complement any outfit. These are the hottest musthaves for summer!

The fabulous range has hand-made bracelets in a variety of colours and styles, personalized business card holders, women’s purses and now includes an amazing selection of custom-made leather bags. From travelling cases to satchels, backpacks and handbags to sling bags and totes… all hand-made with love and fastidious attention to detail.

What we love most about Philani’s work is its quirkiness – most of the backpacks and satchels have straps that you can clip on and off, making them completely interchangeable and customizable. It also allows you to fit the bags to your body shape, making them uber comfy, on top of already being incredibly chic!

Where the wild(ly fashionable) things are

f Scotch & Soda is where you find your fashion fix, then the new Spring-Summer 2017 collection is about to give you some serious wanderlust – and give your wardrobe a glorious splash of colour. We’re head over heels…

Expect the glory of nature captured in style. The collection was inspired by one corner of the globe to the other, from the high deserts of Namibia, to the lush, flora-filled rainforests of the Amazon. We’re absolutely thrilled with the emerald green and bright botanical patterns, the bold animal prints, and the metallic

shimmer, inspired by the beauty of beetles. During spring we see lush greens, budding blooms, and the crisp air is filled with the buzzing of insects as they flit from flower to flower. All of this is reflected in the world of greens and sun-cast-on-rain metallic colours and textures that flow throughout the collection… gorgeous satin blouses, colourful jumpsuits and trendy shorts. As summer breaks, the collection is immersed in more colour, and transports you from the humid rainforests to the dry heat and stark beauty of the desert. Expect dirt-washed pastels to vivid toxic-warning brights in t-shirts, blouses, linen pants and more.

This season, Scotch & Soda have also introduced a beach capsule… Five fabulous white pieces, edged with sweet geo embroideries and French taping for swift summer time-outs. There’s not a lot we don’t love about this collection. The fabrics are soft and sensual, the tailoring is perfect and we want every piece. Loosen those purse-string people, fashion is calling! Find Scotch & Soda store at Sandton City, 163 5th Street, or at Hyde Park Corner Mall, 320 Jan Smuts Avenue. 5 www.scotch-soda.com | t @ScotchandSodaSA

T

Here’s the spice of life

here’s nothing we love more than tucking into a hearty curry with steamed basmati rice and a freshly baked naan bread to scoop up all that delectable sauce… We’re making ourselves hungry over here. Time to get our fix at Banjaara Indian Restaurant. The restaurant welcomes you the moment you step through the doors. It’s all cheerful yellow lighting and bright, burnt orange walls, with royal blue table clothes draped over numerous, impeccably laid tables. We adore the snug little booths that invite you to get cozy while you await a feast that is fit for royalty. Start with a serving of the Pakoda Potatoes; brinjals (which is eggplant) and onions, flavoured with herbs and spices which is then deep fried in a chickpea batter. They are delectably fluffy and full of flavour. The masala chips are also divine and are a definite must-try. We’re suckers for a good chicken curry, so we had to try the classic Chicken Vindaloo. The chicken was perfectly prepared, with mustard seeds, fluffy potato wedges and whole red chillies in a mouth-watering exotic gravy. This one can pack quite a punch if you order it hot, so beware! But the tingling on your lips is totally worth it. More the veggie type? Don’t think you’ll be left out when visiting Banjaara. There are many veg-friendly dishes to sample, but you’ve got to try the Dhal Makhnie… black lentils cooked in an indulgent butter gravy with red kidney beans. There’s even a Vegetable Biryani, so you’ll be well catered for.

From traditional samosas, bunny chows and roti wraps, to chicken cooked in a tandoori oven and lamb dishes where the meat is so tender it slides straight off the bone, the food at Banjaara is how Indian food is supposed to taste. Flavourful without being overly pungent, spicy but not too hot. It all turns us naan!

SUNDAY BUFFET SPECIALS Join the Weltevreden Park or Florida branches every Sunday for a delicious Sunday Buffet! Enjoy a selection of starters such as samoosa’s and chilli bites, followed by a scrumptious main course consisting of one chicken, one lamb and two veggie curries. The selection of curries alternates each Sunday. Rice and naan bread are served standard with all curries. Follow your main course with ice cream or a traditional North Indian rice pudding. Kids under the age of 10 years eat for free!

You can’t have a curry without some bread, agreed? We couldn’t wait to tuck into the Stuffed Aloo Pratha; bread stuffed to the brim with spiced potato and drizzled with warm, melted butter. Drooling? Yea, we were too.

chef of the month STEFANO MAS of Pomodoro Ristorante, Morningside

Chef Stefano’s smile crinkles the corner of his eyes, and he laughs with his whole body. We like that. He was born in South Africa, but grew up in Mexico. His Spanish dad met his Italian/ South African mom in Switzerland, and they moved to Mexico, where Stefano lived until he was 18 years old, before returning to South Africa to study.

22

Growing up in Mexico City and attending a French school, as well as the mish mash of cultures in his life influenced Stefano’s passion for food and cooking. He gleaned strong culinary influences from his dad, and most Hello Joburg • November 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

specifically his grandmother, who is not only a brilliant cook, but also an artist. In fact, it’s her art that adorns the walls of the restaurant. He studied engineering (of all things!) at WITS University, and after graduating he went in to computers, where he remained until 11 years ago – when Pomodoro was born. The first Pomodoro had a hundred seats and was located above the Cod Father in Rivonia. It was almost a jumble if you will – here was this passionate guy, with no clue about ordering stock or things like cutlery and crockery. ‘I had to teach the waiters how to serve the food, and I hadn’t a clue,’ Stefano grins to himself. Pomodoro moved to Morningside Shopping centre in June 2009, and has certainly become a well-known landmark. Did we mention their wine list has 170 different wines on it? One thing he loves most about his job is the

interaction with the customers. ‘You can see if people love it or hate it straight away. It’s not like working in computers, where you don’t know until later. I can see immediately, and make a change or recommendation if needed.’ Stefano’s two favourite dishes are creations that happened by accident. His home-made tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms, whisky and saffron was all he had in his cupboard one night - and now it’s a dish! The penne with prawns and tequila was created while he was cooking for friends in Mexico. Someone handed him a huge glass of tequila and instead of drinking it, he threw it in to the pan …and the rest, as they say, is tasty history. VICTOR BARBOSA & SHAUN ELS usiness partners Victor Barbosa and Shaun Els started as cricket rivals in primary school, but it was on an adventure to London that sparked an idea and birthed the brainchild of their artisanal coffee spot – Naked Coffee.

The pair have always been coffee connoisseurs, and their travels fuelled their passion for the bean. Seeing a gap in the South African market during the Australian coffee wave, they made their entrepreneurial move. They needed a name relevant to what they were doing. After extensive experimentation with machinery and coffee tasting, they opted for the artisanal method of extraction known as ‘pouring a coffee naked’ - and the name was decided.

Having always worked with brands, Naked Coffee is a brand they’ve collectively developed. Their greatest reward is seeing people react to a concept birthed from their minds’ eye. Depending on the time of day, Naked Coffee attracts a mixed crowd; between

business breakfasts, working lunches and being a bloggers hotspot, everyone buys into the culture of an inviting environment that’s relaxed, but professional. The menu pushes boundaries. Every plate is prepared individually and the coffee. They’re experimental with their offerings, and conceptualise dishes based on what’s trending internationally. Think coffeecrusted fillet or their favourite breakfast spoil – Shakshuka served with freshly-baked Kitka. If any chef could prepare a meal for them, Shaun would call on his mom for her traditional Lebanese Balzella. Victor would love to share a table with Israeli Chef Yotam Assaf Ottolenghi. A new Naked Coffee spot is set to open in Sandton City midNovember! They’re always coming up with innovative ideas, like the introduction of old-school Naked notepads and pencils, designed to socialise. Oregano - Linden Are you ready to roll? This boutique patisserie and catering company is underrated in our opinion, because they serve some of the airiest, plumpest baked goods in town. Their goodies are handmade, crisp, seductive and fresh out the oven! Can we just take a moment to discuss their banana bread, we’re officially best friends. Moist, oozy and velvety, oh so yummy! They also make white chocolate and mocha cream profiteroles. Enough said. Find them: 71 7th Street, Linden, 5 www.oreganocatering.co.za @oreganocatering

Fournos Bakery - Craighall From the finest fresh croissants in town, to Italian Ciabatta, homemade bagels and French baguettes… name it, they have it. This place is renowned, and we all grew up with a box of supple Fournos croissants on a Saturday morning. Not much has changed; they’re still as delectable as ever, only now they’ve opened a new branch in Craighall. We recommend the Olive Italian Ciabatta Baguette; toasty, warm, and melt-in-themouth. If you’re gluten-free, they have a lump of wheat-free love just for you.

Patachou Patisserie - Nelson Mandela Square It’s brand spanking new! You can now find your colorful carbs inside Sandton’s new gem, Septimo restaurant. Try and ignore the sweltering sweetness of their freshly baked pastries (macarons maybe? Or galette des rois?), and order one of their artisanal sourdough loaves. Okay, that was misleading, order two. You’ll thanks us later. On a Friday, you’ve got to demand one of their freshly baked Challah Breads, a chutzpah or not, you deserve it!

AND THE BULL A history of The Bull Run Restaurant

I

f, like us, you’re fans of The Bull Run Restaurant - which forms part of the Balalaika Hotel – then you’re going to want to tuck into the history behind this stunning place… In early 2000, the management team learnt the existing restaurant, O’Hagans Pub was going into liquidation. They saw this as the perfect opportunity to claim it back, and create a restaurant the Hotel could operate and manage.

A vision appeared… black and white harlequin tiles, wooden floors with wood wine racks, high ceilings and face brick walls. White table cloths with lovely big wine glasses, an open plan kitchen with a butchery attached and a fun, vibey feel. The idea was for guests to see the action in the kitchen, while the meat ageing fridge meant vacuum packed meat could be sold directly to the public. A menu concept was created based around the share options of the JSE, letting you buy or compare your prices in foreign currencies – quite a fun and unusual idea. Renovations began and hey, presto! The Bull Run Restaurant opened its doors on 28 October in 2000. Through its 17 years of operation, the venue has seen minor, but necessary changes, and considering the building of a new shopping centre next door, there will be a few more. This includes plans to enclose the terrace with either a permanent cover or with folding glass doors, so that it can be opened or closed. This will also help the Bull Run team ensure that all tables are available throughout the year, regardless of the season.

30

There are many restaurants in the area, and management know that in order to keep their restaurant relevant, they need to keep up with the new trends. However, the concept of The Bull Run Restaurant wouldn’t change, it’s just given an updated look and feel in keeping with the latest innovations. We can’t wait to check it out for ourselves! The team came up with the concept of opening a new, upmarket Grill Room that would continue to attract their vast, international clientele. The idea was based on the fact that meat is extremely expensive in Europe, and more than half of the hotels clientele come from Europe. They were also aware that the new JSE was being built just across the road, and they could open the restaurant at the same time the JSE opened its doors. The old JSE in Diagonal Street in downtown Joburg had a restaurant called the Bull and Bears - and so The Bull Run was born.

Cultivating WELLNESS

with the Renewal Institute

N

eeding time to fight off an illness or hearing about a bug affecting many people isn’t uncommon. Mostly, we use antibiotics or medication to get us functioning again. Although the medication may work for a while, it’s not a permanent solution. Instead of treating disease, we should cultivate wellness. Instead of waiting to get sick, think of ways to stay healthy, and build a strong immune system in the process. Dr. Maureen Allem, founder and medical director at the Renewal Institute says, ‘Don’t wait for disease to set in. If you don’t make time for wellness today, you’ll have to make time for illness tomorrow.’ It’s important to understand that everything you do affects your health. Don’t underestimate the impact of late nights, stress and a bad diet. Here are some lifestyle choices to kick-start your journey to wellness… •

Eat a well-balanced diet, consisting mostly of unprocessed, raw food.

Avoid sugar. Our bodies aren’t designed to cope with too much and it’s highly addictive.

Get enough sleep. Avoid technology before bedtime and create a quiet, dark environment.

Be active and exercise regularly. Not necessarily in the gym, a walk every day will do.

Reduce your stress levels. Create a schedule for your workday and allow time for reflection like meditation and yoga to help manage stress.

This philosophy helps look after your health and remain well. If you find that something isn’t well within yourself, don’t just treat the symptoms - find out where the problem stems from. The following tests are available at clinics with a holistic approach, such as Health Renewal, to get to the bottom of potential disease… Not sleeping well? Get tested for sleep apnea. Your skin is the dashboard of the body, indicating when something is not functioning the way it should. Gut health is the start to most diseases and can be tested for and restored through correct treatments. When the body isn’t getting all the vitamins and minerals required, get a blood test done to find out what supplements you may be short of.

These treatments are specific to individual needs, and a one-size fit all approach won’t work. If a friend gets amazing results with a certain supplement, it’s not necessarily what you need. It’s important to be individually assessed by a health care professional with a holistic approach.

Shake it off! id someone say DIY frozen smoothies on the go? We’re devastated we didn’t come up with the concept ourselves, but we have no issue giving credit where it is due…

What are they: Frozen smoothie packs co-created with dietitians to give you a balanced, nutritious and convenient meal on the go! Delivered right to your front door, packaged and frozen. Just pop it in your freezer - no mess, no fuss! What’s in ‘em: Wholesome fruit, vegetables, nuts, dairy, and superfoods that are all part of a healthy diet. Add the pack to a Nutribullet, add your liquid of choice, whizz away and voila! Verdict: Blendid smoothies are jam-packed with goodness, freshness and are basically health in a bag. We devoured our pack of four! They get double thumbs up from us. Plus, we love that they’re a family owned and managed business.

We hope this fad is here to stay! Our top picks: Honey Pot, Hangover Cure and Klap Gym. 5 www.blendid.co.za @blendidsa

The overwhelming obsession with smoothies has reached new heights. While the question still lingers – ‘to chew or not to chew’ - for now, we’re satisfied with chugging down one a day.

OPERATION HUNGER KEEPS ON ROLLING

E

The power of the Hippo Roller

stablished in 1980, Operation Hunger is a registered South African Non-Profit Organisation (NPO). Originally focused on relief work, it has (since the early 1990s) been more focused on development work.

Roller Project in 1994, the company has continued to provide an appropriate portable water solution for economically poor communities across Africa. The Hippo Water Roller Project has established itself as a sustainable initiative that provides African communities with an immediate, and winning water and sanitation solution.”

Operation Hunger’s primary objectives include improving levels of nutrition in impoverished communities through sustainable, integrated income generating food security schemes. The organisation is dedicated to providing clean, accessible water to households where water is not readily available. This is to help communities develop gardens, support livestock and be protect them against water borne diseases.

Recent OH interventions include work in communities like Likazi in Mpumalanga, and Mokopane and Blouberg in Limpopo. Little more than an informal settlement than a village in some cases (such as Likazi, where residents have erected shacks on mine land), the communities lack basic infrastructure. According to Operation Hunger’s Minnie Okwirry, entering a community may appear easys, but it takes a tremendous amount of time to ensure the community is on board.

OH had established partnerships with the private and public sector, as well as like-minded organisations that promote and participate in sustainable income. This helps generate self-help projects and contributes towards the quality of life and independence of communities.

“Operation Hunger utilises Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) techniques when engaging a community, an approach used by NGOs and agencies involved in international development,” says Okwirry. “It aims to incorporate the knowledge and opinions of rural people in the planning and management of development projects and programmes.”

It’s little wonder that Operation Hunger has long been an active and committed partner of Hippo Roller.

“Operation Hunger is now encouraging the establishment of community gardens, which will take place concurrently with the distribution of more Hippo Rollers, with the further spin off that some of the unemployed youth could start a seedling garden which would create income.”

Millions of people struggle daily for access to water. The Hippo Roller makes an immediate, profound impact – helping them collect more water, more efficiently.

Operation Hunger’s work with Hippo Roller illustrates how an understanding of the local environment and culture, coupled with innovative and relevant solutions, can make a sustainable difference in poor, rural communities.

In 2016, the Hippo Roller was the recipient of the Frost & Sullivan ‘2016 African Rural Portable Water Solutions Product Leadership Award’ – which stated, “Since the establishment of the Hippo Water

STREET

Sensations Embrace Johannesburg’s Graffiti Culture

G

raffiti and street art play a large part in the overall culture of Gauteng’s streets. With etchings, designs, and bold graphics splashed across the city, the best thing to do is embrace it as the bloodline of the streets.

As it’s somewhat the ‘tattoo’ of the streets, street art has always been a controversial topic, and has been regarded as vandalism or unprofessional art since its inception in the early eighties. Unfortunately, these titles were given to the art due to the disinterest from the upper-class, and a total lack of understanding of the creation as a social craft. If you find yourself in the position of dismissing street art as vandalism, or even a gateway to crime, then you’re probably not taking the time to listen to the stories that the designs have to tell. And isn’t that the very definition of art? A creation made to appeal to the senses, or communicate a message? Then why do we dismiss the art of the streets before we engage in the messages that each stroke of spray paint has to tell? You’d visit Musee Rodin in Paris to understand the carvings and sculptures of Rodin the artist. You would study the architectural art work of the Empire State building in New York. In that same way

you would visit a city for the art it’s known for, you should take the time to appreciate the stories of Jozi’s streets. The best part about it? It’s free!

Words Khanyi Mlaba

Graffiti is slowly becoming accepted in the public eye, even receiving commission, corporate backing and being used as a key subject in company advertising. Graffiti in Johannesburg itself is one of a kind. We have some of the most talented street artists who’ve decorated the bare walls of the city in vibrant and intricate ways. If you’re not sure how to appreciate the art that the streets have given you, Past Experiences provides guided walking tours to some of the best spots where you can embrace the art form. Explore the street designs in Westdene, Newtown, Maboneng and Braamfontein, and take a moment to be cultured in street art. Or take the inner or outer city tours with MainstreetWalks in Maboneng. They’re both on our must-try tour list! 5 www.pastexperiences.co.za | 5 www.mainstreetwalks.co.za Hello Joburg • November 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

ello Joburgers, if you love Greek like we love Greek, then you’re certainly in good company at the stunning Mythos venue in Montecasino. This double volume restaurant is beautifully appointed with wooden finishes, and touches of blue and white décor that pull through a classy, yet homely Mediterranean feel.

Having opened their doors in 2015, this family restaurant is always busy. The tables are always filled with people laughing and sharing – as one is supposed to do with meze style food. Upstairs, the restaurant boasts two private glassed off rooms - perfect for more intimate functions and events. Downstairs you’ll find the deli, where you can buy all the yummy goodies that you want to enjoy at home, in addition to another private glassed off room. The venue seats 420 people in total, and the upstairs rooms are perfect for any event, from a family celebration dinner to a board meeting, or even a year-end function. Both smaller rooms are equipped with flat screens for guests use, and the upstairs area (which seats 220 people including the balcony area and enclosed rooms), is set to impress with a PA system, screens, stage, space to dance and even a DJ booth. The team at Mythos will help bring together everything you need for the perfect function – from catering to beverage lists, décor and entertainment. Their inhouse DJ is excellent, and belly dancers are also available to give your event that ‘extra something.’

It’s easy to see why Mythos are the proud winners of many awards – most specifically the Best ‘Greek’, ‘Neighbourhood’, ‘Mediterranean’ and ‘Beat-The-Budget’ restaurant categories in the ‘Best of ’ Awards 2016, as well as recently being selected as finalists in the Restaurant and Bar Design Awards.

Words Heather Hook

The menu here certainly covers just about any food preferences, and set menus are available to narrow down the choices for large groups, if need be. From dips and pita breads, to fresh home-made Spanakopita, Dolmades, Keftethes and souvlakia, we could happily snack here all day. Main courses include mouth-watering items like calamari, fresh prawns, Kleftiko and Kota (this chicken dish is to die for!), and of course desserts for those of us with a sweet tooth. Think traditional Loukoumades – granny’s donuts with ice cream, and the traditional Greek Yoghurt served with honey and nuts is also fantastic.

There’s a reason this development prompted well-known South African businessman Douw Steyn to acquire the two thousand acres of land. Could it be the sweeping views of the city, or the all-encompassing landscape? Whatever it is, it’s working. Steyn City is a city for South Africans to live together; it has retooled the old story of South Africa to invent a new one.

our amazing local artists. It’s proudly South African in every aspect and celebrates our heritage. This is as much about the cultural experience as it is about the social.

You’ll be mesmerised by the million trees, shrubs and ground covers that have been planted. The entire city has been built up from scratch - it’s another marvellous man-made forest for Jozi. It’s about staying in on a Sunday evening, ordering food from the deli downstairs, or taking your family fishing on a Friday afternoon after work. What is it about ‘The Good Racist’ that has South African audiences captivated and wanting more? I think it’s the shortage of quality interaction on the topic of race. It’s such a sensitive issue that we have refused to leave our comfort zones and talk about it. We just argue over the idea. This show allows people to chew on it and reflect using the medium of comedy. Who offers more exciting material at the moment; Donald Trump or Jacob Zuma? I’m not sure ‘exciting’ is the right word… maybe ‘menacing’ would be better. We shouldn’t be laughing at them, we should be looking at ourselves. As crap as they are – they didn’t give themselves the job. What do you think about when you’re alone in your car? “Don’t fall asleep, don’t fall asleep!” And “mirror, mirror, blind spot.”

Which comedian do you binge watch? I don’t watch much comedy. Real life is the best source of belly laughter! Hello Joburg • November 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

John Vlismas is a 44-year-old Absurdist Vegetarian (not Vegan), and for over 20 years, he has deftly walked the line between underground, alternative and mainstream comedy. His show ‘The Good Racist’, is on until 26 November at The Pieter Toerien Theatre, and you’d be a fool to miss it.

What would you do if you got paid a million dollars per gig? You mean other than take the money? I would sponsor a school for more specific questions. What were you like in high school? Careless and uninspired. Who inspired you growing up? Pieter Dirk Uys. If you have 1000 unread emails and can only answer 100 of them, how would you choose which ones to answer? Paste the mails to the side of a ship in a drydock, sharpen the head of a local DA councilor, throw the councilor at the side of the ship, and whichever mails get pegged – count three down and answer the first hundred starting with “Dear.” Beach holiday or snowboarding? I’d go snowboarding first, because we don’t know how long snow will be a thing. Joburg will probably be beachfront in the future. Thanks, Donald.
