p until last month, it would have been fair to say we’ve had a pretty good run with the power here in Mzansi but hey, the only constant we have is change. There’s a good chance we’ll be sitting in the dark this month should nationwide load shedding continue to roll out. There’s no question about it that Joburgers can be pretty resourceful when we need to be. So, we’ve planned ahead for you with our tips and tricks for when the lights do go out baby. Read more on page 6. If the power does let you down and you forget to download the series you’re binge-watching at the moment, the good news is that there is plenty of local entertainment happening in Jozi this month. From the Classic Beauty and the Beast on at Carnival City (all the details on page 10) to another hilarious night with Andre The Hypnotist, on page 48, there is something for everyone. If there is one thing you absolutely don’t want to miss out on in March it’s the 30th-anniversary concert of iconic South African band Mango Groove who are celebrating three decades of grooving since the launch of their debut album. Hello Joburg caught up with the brilliant Claire Johnston ahead of their show to talk about

this epic milestone, performing at late Tata Madiba’s inauguration and how social media has impacted the music scene. Read our full interview on page 46. For a quick curation of Jozi’s trendiest spots, we’ve put together a guide of the hippest spots in Jozi on page 7 that not only make for great pictures for good ol’ Insta but will earn you some cool points when your friends or colleagues ask for restaurant recommendations – as they do. On the foodie front, this month Lerato visited Franco’s Pizzeria in Parkview. For a frank review see page 22. We also caught up with Urbanologi’s head chef Jack Coetzee on going back to the ingredient basics on page 24. Plus, we paired wine with breakfast options on page 32 (because the ladies here at Hello Joburg are firm believers that drinking before midday is just as fabulous as it sounds). Astonishingly so, many of the rooftops in the Joburg inner-city stand vacant and unused, even though they soak in the African sun every single day. It is only in the last decade that some rooftops have been converted to events venues and bars. With Joburg’s temperate climate, it is relatively easy to produce fantastic herbs and vegetables right here in the city, close to where households and restaurants need them. Urban farming is the ultimate sustainable practice, cutting out huge transport costs and pollution while getting the freshest produce to customers super-fast. On this JoburgPlaces tour, you will visit one of the UAI rooftop farms as well as a community farm at an old bowling green and the vegetable gardens of Victoria Yards too. Expect a fun day out in the city, buy some fresh produce along the way and sit down for lunch, building your own sandwich with the produce you acquired along the way. The 80s was lavish in its use of materials and active in its use of decoration. Despite the sheen of its facades, it was a decade in which a sense of romanticism towards the past, either through literal imitation or allusion to its forms and ornaments, dominated design. The outcome was often exciting, luxurious and sumptuous, and sometimes just self-indulgent. Either way, it was a decade in which 70s utopian modernism was replaced by an acceptance of the complexity and kitsch of modern existence. Join architects Yasmin Mayat, Brendan Hart and Brian Kent McKechnie as they explore the glitz and glamour of the 80s in Joburg, from the City through Parktown, and then to Sandton beyond. BABY WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT…. it’s probably load shedding

There’s a high probability we’ll be sitting in the dark this month as nationwide load shedding continues to roll out. But us Saffers are pretty resourceful when we need to be. Here’s how take that proactivity up a notch. Ain’t nobody got time for a power outage! schedule, charge up! Your phone, your iPad or laptop, your kinky bedroom toys, your power bank – whatever - you name it! If it charges, juice it, baby.

EskomSePush Never ones to lose our sense of humour, of course, two local dudes came up with a humorous idea on how to survive the Eskom crisis. Herman Maritz and Dan Wells created an app back in 2014 to keep the rest of Mzansi up to date on when the lights go out. Last month EskomSePush exploded from 2 500 users to 400 000 in a week. #winningapp. The app, amusingly named EskomSePush sends a push notification to your phone when load shedding is going to take place giving you the time to plan accordingly.

6

Stay charged So, if you’ve downloaded Dan and Herman’s app, you will now have some idea of when the next outage is going to occur. Hopefully! As someone once translated– to be forewarned is to be forearmed. Cue Chariots of Fire theme song. But now that you have some indication of the outage Hello Joburg • March 2019 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Let’s them eat it cold What would any survival guide be without some kind of catering fallback? Dinner doesn’t have to be a sad occasion without your usual piping hot favourite. If anything, it’s a time to try something new - maybe a little leaner and lighter too? How about a nice healthy salad with avo, feta and chickpeas or a beautiful cheese board with fresh bread and preserves? Perfect for sharing! Add a nice glass of good wine, light some candles and you’ve set the scene for one hell of a romantic meal…which may just lead to more dessert in the boudoir. Batten down the hatches! We’ve always wanted to say that. But, let’s get the basics right here. If we know there’s load shedding on its way, let’s prep for the worst. Stock up on candles, charcoal for the braai, extra blankets if the temperature is expected to drop and even a dorky headlamp or two to find your way around the house. This may not be the ‘brightest’ of times but we’ll sure as hell keep it fun and practical in the dark.

Download the drama In the middle of that new show YOU on Netflix? You know the one where the sweetish guy from Gossip Girl now plays the social media psycho that has you holding on to the edge of the couch to see what’s in store for that poor (but social media obsessed) girl Beck? Downloading your current series from Netflix when the power outage tanks your connectivity will avoid something awful like having to wait to see what happens next or hearing spoilers at the office the next day.

TAKE A TRIP TO THE TRENDIEST SPOTS IN TOWN … your Instagram followers will thank you!

So, its March, and your Instagram feed has been looking rather boring lately after an epic streak of holiday snaps, back to work selfies and Valentine’s Day pictures with your boo. Inspiration may be running low but there’s really no need to subject your followers to pictures of your cat just yet. We’ve put together a guide to the trendiest spots in Jozi that not only make for great pictures but will earn you some cool points and make your Instagram followers swoon. Take a trip to these trendy hotspots and ensure your feed stays #goals!

e simply can’t talk about food trends without focusing on plantbased dishes. From Meat-Free Monday to Buddha Bowls and The Beyond Burger, ditching that carnivore mindset has never been more popular. We recommend popping into Lexi’s Healthy Eatery in Sandton for a scrumptious and oh-so colourful smoothie bowl garnished with all the necessary ingredients to make that food snap pop; think edible flowers, hemp seeds, fresh fruit, nuts and seeds. Before you leave don’t forget to upload a shot to your story and tag @lexiseatery and you might be featured on their page. Another must-visit that will surely add little more oomph to your food posts is Kaylee’s Eatery in Bedfordview. Located inside of Comic Warehouse you can shoot your epic veganised salmon sandwich amongst a backdrop of old cars and superhero figurines…it doesn’t get more original than that. Q @lexiseatery Q @kayleesbedfordview

Okay, so now that you’ve got your food post down its time for that coffee shot. Avoid that cliché cappuccino with a powered heart and rather opt for a super cool Americano with a dash of almond milk in a cup with a personalised sketch of your face on it at The Moral Kiosk in Melville. Why not grab an artisanal rusk or homemade biscuit while you’re at it and browse their amazing collection of local fashion, music and art that’s for sale while you’re there too? This spot also hosts intimate live music performances and art exhibitions from time to time so keep an eye on their socials. The next step is adding a little edge to your feed because nothing says ‘spontaneous’

Dakota Lee and ‘adventurous’ like getting a new tatt. Head on over to Dakota Lee in Kramerville, a bar/tattoo studio that not only offers some seriously amazing inkwork but also provides a grungy yet sophisticated backdrop that turns into a party venue with live music in the evenings. Q @themoralkiosk_jhb Q @dakotalee_southafrica

Food, check. Coffee, check. Edge, check. Nightlife, check. All that’s left is to show your loyal followers just how cultured you are. And we don’t mean strolling around an art gallery pretending to be interested in a random exhibition either. Try something a little different and opt for a comedy show at the Goliath Comedy Club in Melrose for performances by some of the biggest names in comedy. The venue hosts a cigar lounge, VIP area and offers delicious food. And who knows you may be able to get a snap with your favourite comedian! If interior design is more your thing pop into 99 Juta in Braamfontein for a showroom featuring some of the most beautiful, architectural interiors, fittings and art by Dokter and Misses, Joe Paine and Apartment 2B. The whole location offers stunning photo ops including a bright pink courtyard adorned with a yellow lamps and cacti. Q @99juta Q @goliathcomedyclub

Héloïse Haupt from Lunaberry

Lunaberry was founded by Héloïse Haupt upon her return from London where she learnt the art of classical French cuisine and patisserie at Le Cordon Bleu. Lunaberry specialises in baking ‘out of this world’ treats which include celebration cakes, cupcakes, cookies and much more. K www.lunaberry.co.za   Q @lunaberry_za Tell us a little bit more about Lunaberry?   I wanted to start a business that would allow my customers to design their cakes in any way they like. I offer my clients a unique personal touch, guiding them through the process of designing a cake, starting with their choice of flavours, coming up with a unique theme and deciding on finishes to decorate it. It is extremely important to me that the cake not only looks delicious but also tastes delicious. What inspired your love for baking? Baking is one of the ways that I show appreciation and love for the people around me. From a young age, it was the easiest way to show people that I cared about them.To this day one of my greatest joys is seeing the look of pure delight and excitement on my clients’ faces when they come to collect their orders.

The world’s first virtual personal cruise assistant is poised to take MSC Cruises’ Guest Services to an exciting new level with guestcentric technology that will further enrich their cruise holiday. Developed in partnership with HARMAN and Samsung Electronics, ZOE is a voice-enabled artificial intelligence (AI) that can speak seven languages. Available in every cabin and able to answer hundreds of questions about the cruise, she can provide information about onboard services, give guidance and suggestions, or help to book a service. ZOE will launch on MSC Bellissima in early March and will then be available on each new ship, including the upcoming MSC Grandiosa and MSC Virtuosa in 2020. 1 www.msccruises.co.za

KURO-Bō’s message is simple. It is now 100% easy and 100% convenient to create the best-tasting water using 100% natural filters that are kind to the environment and sustainably produced. Since launching in 2017, KURO-Bō has rapidly revolutionised water filtering systems in South Africa. Through their innovative use of Japaneseinspired activated charcoal (or “Binchotan”), KURO-Bō has changed the way South Africans can access purified and mineralised water, at home and on-the-go, and with zero single-use plastic. KURO-Bō blends elegance and style with practical functionality when it comes to naturally filtering water. 1 www.kuro-bo.com

What’s the most extravagant cake you’ve ever made?  I have done a few very ‘unique' cakes for bachelor and bachelorette parties. I did a cake for a friends birthday last year; the theme was Halloween and I decided to present him with his own severed head on a platter! He loved it! If you could describe yourself as a frosting flavour what would it be and why?  Chocolate with a hazelnut crunch. I think I am a rather bold person so a flavour like double chocolate would suit me well but, then there is a side of me that is completely unexpected, hence the hazelnut crunch. One item in your kitchen you can’t live without?  If I had to pick, it would probably be my kitchen aid or my Rational Oven - they go hand in hand. Hello Joburg • March 2019 • Hellojoburg.co.za

arnival City’s Mardi Gras Theatre provides the stage for the O.A.K Youth Theatre’s captivating musical production, Beauty and the Beast in March 2019. The show, starring talented performers from the greater Gauteng area, tells a classic story of true love and features beautiful costumes by Hollywood Costumes, and songs that will have audiences tapping their feet. Beauty and the Beast, which enjoyed a highly successful run at the Atterbury Theatre in 2018, will be staged at the Mardi Gras Theatre from 21 to 24 March 2019. “We are delighted to partner with O.A.K Youth Theatre to bring this wonderfully produced show to Ekurhuleni during the upcoming school holidays. It’s definitely a show for all ages,” says Michelle Smith, Marketing Manager at Carnival City. True love really does prevail in the end in this heart- warming production as we get to know Belle, a young lady from a small town, where everybody thinks she is odd because she’s infatuated by books and obsessed with reading. The gregarious Gaston sets his eyes on the beautiful Belle and decides that she will be his future bride, much to the delight of Gaston’s sidekick, Le Fou. The Beast captures Belle’s father, Maurice when he tries to pick Belle a beautiful rose in a garden, not knowing that he is in fact on the Beast’s property. While on a quest to find her father, Belle happens to discover the Beast’s castle. What Belle encounters at the castle is somewhat confusing, as she has never before met a talking teapot, a grumpy clock, a boisterous feather duster and a charming candlestick. However, with a very nifty plan, she swaps places with her father and finds herself to be the grumpy and discontented Beast’s prisoner. The show is filled with beautiful costumes, captivating performances and songs that will have every audience member bopping along to the catchy musical numbers. O.A.K. Youth Theatre is back to bring family entertainment to audiences of all ages these holidays and provides the perfect family activity that both children and adults will thoroughly enjoy! Say hello to

Many skincare professionals’ approach is to work with skin types rather than skin tones. Still, your skin tone has an effect on the condition of your skin. Dr Judey from BioMedical Emporium says that the skin’s pigmentation is where differences creep in. Darker skin types are more resilient toward environmental extremities, where lighter skin types need more protection. Lighter skin tones can, however, handle harsher professional treatments, mainly due to its lower pigmentation. According to Dr Judey, all skin types require products that are rich in vitamins and minerals. The important ones, like Vitamin A, B and C, Hyaluronic Acid, peptides, lipids and proteins can all be applied in serums or moisturisers. K www.biomedicalemporium.com Q @biomed_emporium

RADIANT SKIN When trying to perfect our skincare many of us don’t consider our skin tone as a key component. The fact of the matter is that each and everyone’s skin is different - from texture and sensitivity to breakouts and ageing - and skin tone plays a major role in determining how we should be tailoring the perfect routine. But where do you start? Here are some pointers we thought might push you in the right direction and help you find the perfect products for you.

16

Hello Joburg • March 2019 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Kim Franco from Evolve Day Spa agrees. She also says that people with a lighter skin tones are more prone to fine lines and wrinkles, where darker skin tones are prone to pigmentation and blemishes. She suggests that your skin should be treated according to what its tone is prone to. Light skins are often drier, so hydration and nourishment would be key in avoiding ageing. High SPF sunscreen is a must for lighter skins as they are also more easily

According to Brady, light and medium skin tones should use good barrier protection moisturisers like Spa Solutions’ Daily Repair + Protect with SPF15 daily. Night moisturisers should be a powerhouse of anti-aging, anti-oxidant, moisturising, lifting, firming and protection ingredients like Spa Solutions’ Intensive Night Repair, especially if you have light to medium skin tone. Sunscreen is non-negotiable for darker skin tones too and their evening routines should include an anti-aging moisturiser with Tyrosinase inhibitors, Vitamin C and anti-oxidants to even out skin tone. To reduce excess pigment in the skin, the Super Anti-oxidant Mask - loaded with six different anti-oxidants - helps to free radicals, thereby improving skin tone. Brady says that with any skin tone, it is important to exfoliate regularly to expose new skin cells, leaving your skin looking fresh. Try Spa Solutions’ Bio-Actives: Stem Cell Repair (if you are between the ages of 25 and 40) and use it twice daily for the best results. A good quality cleanser (milk

cleanser or soap-free gel), an enzymatic exfoliator and a good quality, high active moisturiser should have you sorted.

Alchem Labs’ Elize Brady says from light to dark skin tones there is a definite difference in the way you treat your skin. According to her, darker skin tones need Tyrosinase Inhibitors that will even out skin tone. Tyrosinase is the enzyme responsible for releasing melanin in the skin. For this, she suggests the Advanced Whitening Complex from Spa Solutions, or even their whitening toner and whitening mask. Lighter skin tones often show couperose (redness with vascularity), a root cause of aging. Brady says that irrespective of your age, antiaging treatments should be part of your skincare routine from as early as 20 years of age and of course, sun protection is key. Sensitive, light skins can try Spa Solutions’ Mild Cleansing Milk, Milk Toner and Sensitive Control to soothe and treat the skin. If your light skin is prone to inflammation due to factors like heat, cold, spicy foods or alcohol, you might find these products with powerful anti-inflammatory agents useful.

affected by the sun. Dark skin tones are often oilier, which means that their daily treatment routine should include products that will balance out oiliness. Even though they are less prone to damage from the sun, SPF is still important to combat skin blemishes. Preventing spots and blemishes is better than trying to cure them as treatment is more difficult with darker skin tones. For older skins, retinol is a must. “It restores your skin to a radiant glow while helping to balance uneven skin tone,” says Franco. It’s also the best in treating fine lines and wrinkles, so people with lighter skin tones should definitely see the difference. K www.evolvedayspa.co.za Q @evolvedayspa

Dr Alek Nikolic, who has been an aesthetic medical practitioner for more than 20 years, says paler skin tones are more likely to lose pigment in the event of skin injuries, where darker skin tones are prone to gain excess pigment. Prevent this with good quality SPF and avoiding inflammatory skin conditions and skin trauma. He says the most important step in your skincare routine is a good SPF 30 or higher with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. He also recommends a Vitamin C serum like sk.in gloss for your morning routine, which increases UV protection and helps lighten pigmentation. For your evening routine, he suggests a combination of Vitamin C and Vitamin A, like sk.in Bounce, to further enhance the pigment lightening effect. K www.skiningredients.com Q @supersk.in

Royale SA’s fresh and manageable approach to your everyday skin routine says: “Water is crucial for your skin because like all your other organs it is made up of cells. Cells, in turn, are made up of water, and without water the organs can’t function properly.” They suggest that you drink water first thing in the morning to flush down toxins and to activate your organs. Also drink a glass of water before every meal, before you take a shower or bath and before you go to bed. They recommend that you wash your face in the morning and before you go to bed and that you don’t have to worry too much about finding the best product. Buying the best you can afford and rather making sure that you wash your face twice daily is key. Thirdly, sunscreen is a must and last, but not least, ground yourself by going barefoot more often. The theory behind grounding yourself is that it returns the body to a natural state, which has many benefits, including reducing inflammation. K www.royalesa.com Q @royaleafriquedusud

Lerato's CORNER An Honest Review… FRANCO’S PIZZERIA

F

rom crusty wood-fired pizzas and hearty plates of pasta to finely crafted specialities, it’s said that you’ll never go hangry at Franco’s Pizzeria in Parkview. The old-school pizzeria is known to be one of Joburg’s most splendido Italian spots, but does it really live up to its reputation? I decided to go find out for myself. A few Friday nights ago, I grabbed one of my girlfriends and we headed to Franco’s to enjoy some carbs and catchups. When you walk into the cosy pizzeria, the first thing you notice is the red and green colour scheme, basic tableware and old Chianti straw bottles that make you wonder if the owners have changed anything since the restaurant opened in the 1980s. We were warmly welcomed by Franco Forleo himself and then decided that the décor (or lack thereof) matches the authentic, down-to-earth vibe. To start, we shared the Prosciutto Crudo con Melone, which certainly wasn’t the most beautifully presented cured ham and melon starter I’d ever seen, but it was made with decent Parma ham. To drink, we ordered a bottle of house red from the small selection of wines by the glass. If you’re an adventurous drinker, you might prefer sipping your way through the interesting range of imported Italian wines and beers on offer. For mains, I went for the Tagliatelle Alle Cozze – ribbon noodles with half-shell mussels and tomato – and my friend chose the Quattro Formaggi; a margarita pizza topped with feta, provolone and gorgonzola. When the dishes reached our table, we were again let down by the simple presentation. However, when we tucked in, that didn’t matter anymore. My pasta was cooked al dente and the mussels tasted like they’d been caught that same day – fresh as can be! The pizza had just the right amount of char and a perfectly chewy crust with a very generous amount of cheese. We ended our meal on a sweet note with cappuccinos and a portion of Italian kisses. My friend had the frozen cappuccino and said that it was especially decadent. While you won’t find any unusual ingredients or pizza toppings – let alone Instaworthy dishes – at Franco’s, what you will find is comforting Italian fare made with love that’s prepared simply, extraordinarily tasty and priced extremely well. You can also expect top-notch service – the waitrons are exceptionally knowledgeable about the menu and make it their priority to ensure you enjoy your meal from start to finish. PS: there's no corkage fee for the first bottle of wine you bring. Now that’s love!

chef OF THE MONTH

JACK

COETZEE

Farm-to-table, snout-to-tail – whatever you call it, for Urbanologi’s head chef Jack Coetzee, the concept of going back to basics isn’t merely a food trend; it’s a way of life. It’s a philosophy in which he prepares his guests the most flavourful, tastiest, nutrient-rich dishes he can by sourcing the best local ingredients.

24

After winging recipes for a couple of years, Jack started to really enjoy spending time in the kitchen and moved to Cape Town to begin studying towards becoming a professional chef at Silwood School of Cookery. Since then, he’s worked in the kitchens of award-winning restaurants, including The Test Kitchen by Luke Dale-Roberts. Hello Joburg • March 2019 • Hellojoburg.co.za

During Jack’s tenure at The Test Kitchen, he worked closely with chef Angelo Sirocco, who started the brewery-eatery Urbanologi in the heart of Joburg. When the position of head chef opened up, Jack joined the team. “At the time, I was working at Summerfields Rose Retreat & Spa in Mpumalanga. I flew to Joburg for the interview, instantly fell in love with Urbanologi and the rest is history,” Jack says. Jack explains that the type of food on offer at Urbanologi is no longer Asian-fusion tapas. “With our new menu, developed by myself and my two sous chefs, we’re moving away from that tag – the emphasis is now on tapas, or small plates, based on sustainable sourcing.” Along with the new menu, Urbanologi has introduced the Project 150 concept, which entails only sourcing ingredients within a 150km radius of the restaurant.

The new menu is divided into different sections – butcher, greengrocer, fishmonger baker and brewery – and each dish indicates how far the main ingredient source is from the restaurant. Among the dishes on the seasonal menu at the moment are duck scotch eggs, pork cheek buns, tempura shimeji mushrooms and Jack’s take on salmon sashimi. While the farm-to-table concept is restrictive, Jack says it’s equally exciting as it allows him to be highly innovative with the menu. “We’ve had to borrow techniques from different local cultures and modernise some South African classics. Our aim is to create something that’s of an international standard, but still reflects the cuisine that’s special to our little corner of the globe,” he explains. There’s only one way to get a better taste for chef Jack’s cooking, and that’s to go and taste it yourself. 1 Fox Street, Ferreirasdorp m 011 492 1399 1 www.urbanologi.co.za

hef Jack is the first to admit that the history of why he decided to become a chef isn’t what you’d expect to hear. “My dear mother, who I love to bits, is a terrible cook,” he laughs. Having grown up in the Zimbabwean city of Gweru and attended boarding school in his high school years, Jack says that this, coupled with ‘borderline inedible’ canteen food, made him decide to take matters into his own hands. “My dad is a farmer, so convincing him to start a vegetable patch with some basic herbs at home was an easy task,” he adds.

HOTSPOTS:

BOWL’D Morningside has got a new, posh eater y and we’re Bowl’d over!

B

owl’d Restaurant opened its doors early in December 2018 and this eatery is slowly, but surely bowling everyone over with pool parties, special sushi platters and a restaurant concept that is different to the norm. Situated at Masingita Towers, a residential block on West Road South, the restaurant’s customer feed is a mix of residents, locals from the area and business people who appreciate its versatility. The bulk of Bowl’d’s menu is served in bowls of different shapes and sizes, with an overarching theme of fresh and healthy. The menu’s sections that are dedicated to vegan and vegetarian diners show that they are on par with current trends. The wine list is one of note, with a bunch of bubblies and wines to choose from by the glass. You can also taste wines in the on-site wine cellar, offering informal wine tasting facilities for guests who would like to consider their options before getting a bottle for the table.

Words Renate Engelbrecht Images Supplied

The restaurant, its cuisine and its offerings are fresh and tie in well with the way people roll these days. Residents from the towers come down and do yoga beside the pool in the mornings, after which a bowl of something is in order. Business people meet here for conferences or meetings and Bowl’d ensures that they are well looked after when it comes to lunch and drinks.

BLOOM COFFEE Sitting right on the corner of 12th Street and 4th Avenue in Parkhurst’s competitive restaurant hub, Bloom definitely means business.

T

rue to the words corner café, Bloom is a space for entrepreneurs, business people and breakfast buddies alike. With a yellow bicycle parked in front, it’s clear that they like to mix business with pleasure. It is a laid-back environment; the perfect space for creatives and freelancers to do their thing. Breakfast is served all day long, which is one of our favourite things about Bloom. Plus, they have partnered with FATHER Coffee, a definite perk. The café is a mix of old and new. Vintage, wooden floors are complemented by a modern, marble coffee station and blue and white tables and chairs. Even though the café has only been around for just over a month, they’ve already nestled themselves into the heart of Parkhurst and their loyal and regular patrons. Not only do they serve the entrepreneurial crowd, but they train them too. The baristas behind the marble bar are all part of a 12-month programme that teaches them about coffee-making and entrepreneurship. The programme touches on topics like finance too. At the back of Bloom, there are a couple smallish boardrooms that can be booked for free. It’s ideal for more private brainstorming sessions or meetings and in a quirky environment like this, it’s sure to get the creative juices flowing.

Bowl’d forms part of the George Sinovich Collection. With a knack for knowing what people want, George Sinovich has launched a restaurant that caters for classy, contemporary Joburg diners. The layout has been clearly thought through and it is unique in that it can be chopped and changed according to guests’ needs. Bowl’d can be utilised as a party, meeting or conference venue with an almost circular, marble bar serving guests from all corners. A stunning photo wall decorates the non-smoking deck overlooking the Joburg skyline - a deck perfect for breakfast or smallish events.

The menu is fresh and pretty affordable, with the Bloom breakfast costing a manageable R55 and since it goes towards the empowerment of people passionate about coffee, we don’t mind adding a generous tip.

At Bowl’d we wouldn’t mind bringing our bowls for a second helping. It’s that good.

Hats off to you, team Bloom!

ANTONIA DE LUCA

Leafy Greens Café A stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of the city, nestled in the foothills of the Swartkop Mountains; is an organic country farm reminiscent of Antonia De Luca’s grandmother’s garden, where she discovered her palpable passion for Italian food as a young girl.

A

labour of love and light, Leafy Greens Café started out as a passion project between two friends and was originally registered as LG Café. While soaking up the sun on a beach in Santa Monica, restaurateur Antonia De Luca came up with the name Leafy Greens Café, and the sanctuary to nourish mind, body and soul was born. With more matcha here and less charcoal there, it’s overwhelming to keep up with the wellness trends around the world, but immersed in the beauty of the botanicals, Antonia keeps it simple with her farm to table ethos. Going back to basics has allowed Leafy Greens Café to cherish the fresh produce from their garden, that is both rich in nutrients and goodness, because it’s grown organically and ripened by the sun. Inspired by the likes of Ottolenghi, Antonia’s international chef training has her serving up contemporary crowd-pleasers such as raw zucchini lasagna with macadamia cheese, oxheart tomatoes and beautiful basil pesto.

BURGERACK

With burgers that are made from scratch using only the finest locally sourced ingredients like juicy all-natural beef patties with no additives or preservatives, this is the perfect spot for a fresh down to earth burger. Grilled on an open flame and then prepared specifically to order each burger that leaves the kitchen is a work of art that will surely take you on a taste adventure. Other honourable mentions include the jalapeño mayo chicken wings and the hard-shell tacos. There are branches nationwide so check out their website for a location near you.  1 www.burgerack.co.za

Motivated by her mentor, vegan food guru and veteran Natal Swimmer Barbara Leiman, Antonia has remained authentic to herself and the people that she serves. Rewarded by the people that she meets and the incredible team that she works with, every challenge has presented Antonia with an opportunity to grow. She loves nothing more than when people choose to eat, meet and retreat at Leafy Greens Café.

In our opinion, if drinking a mimosa for breakfast is acceptable then wine is fine, too. In fact, we’d make a pretty strong argument to ditch the OJ altogether and just have bubbly. After all, what you eat for breakfast deserves some attention and what you’ll be sipping is just as important– you just need to make sure you’re drinking the right tipple. Enter the breakfast wine.

Wine: Strandveld First Sighting Rosé 2015 Where to buy it: Liquor City or on www.strandveld.co.za for R65 a bottle. What it tastes like: Tart strawberries and red berries burst forth in this delightful blend of 40% Shiraz and 60% Grenache. On the nose, you’ll pick up delicate floral notes, while on the palate it’s crisp and fresh with notes of watermelon and pomegranate followed by a cool, dry finish. Why it’s a great breakfast wine: This wine has just enough acidity to cleanse your palate and cut through rich breakfast foods with a zesty sweetness to accompany a wider range of dishes. What to drink it with: Love it or hate it, the classic omelette is a perfect pairing with this high-flavour wine. Made with fillings that can be tailored to any specific taste and palate from cheese to veggies and meat all set into place between a fluffy egg blanket, this savoury breakfast dish is a firm favourite. Not only will the colour of the wine complement this breakfast, but it’ll also embellish the flavour profile and has moderate acidity to quench your thirst.

Wine: Flagstone Poetry Sauvignon Blanc 2017 Where to buy it: Check out wine.co.za it goes for R51 a bottle and R615 for 12. We think it’s a bargain. What it tastes like: Flavours of melon and passion fruit entice the nose, with the alluring tanginess of green figs and a zesty citrus twist enlightening the palate. A lovely, lingering aftertaste with a smooth, soft finish. Why it’s a great breakfast wine: The truth is that it’s actually quite tough to pair wine with something as simple as the avocado. Who knew? Given its rich, creamy flavour you really need something that can cut through the fleshy texture and leave an impression on your taste buds. Avo is really a big bite of Omega 3 fats so your best bet is something cool and crisp to cleanse the palate. Fresh fruit flavours like passion fruit and melon cut through the avocado’s sweetness and fattiness and perfectly complements its rich earthiness. What to drink it with: That Instagram swoon-worthy avocado toast. Top a slice of your favourite bread with perfectly ripened smashed avocado, a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice and a generous sprinkle of red pepper flakes and pink Himalayan salt. Yum!

Wine: Valdo Prosecco Floral Brut Edition Where to buy it: From www.bottleshop.co.za for R269 a bottle. What it tastes like: On the nose, this prosecco has a fine, elegant and complex structure with aromas of blossom and a consistent presence of raspberry. The palate has a pleasant tickle of delicate bubbles that perfectly fill the mouth with a round, warm and charmingly fruity flavour. Why it’s a great breakfast wine: While tucking into your deliciously rich and hearty eggs benedict breakfast you’ll want something with a touch of floral, fruity sweetness to perfectly offset those savoury flavours. And, who doesn’t love fruit and flowers in the AM? What to drink it with: The eggs benedict is undisputedly a breakfast classic. Leave out all the fancy add-ons and bells and whistles and pair this bubbly with perfectly toasted English muffins, a poached egg and agenerous splash of creamy hollandaise sauce.

Urbanologi

CAPITAL STOPOVER In the City of Gold, it’s always a good time to visit!

3-5 hours No time? No problem! OR Tambo International Airport is the busiest airport in Africa and has much to offer local and international travellers – think a choice of nine lounges to freshen up, duty-free shops and restaurants that range from fast food and bakeries to a craft beer pub. If you have enough time to venture out, jump on the Gautrain (it’s the recommended mode of transport as Jozi is notorious for congested traffic) and head to Park Station in Braamfontein and take a 15-minute walk or an Uber to Constitutional Hill. The awe-inspiring buildings,

34

which reveal both the horrors of some of the darkest hours of 20th Century South Africa and the bright, optimistic future of our country, are sure to send chills down your spine! There are extensive permanent museum exhibits and a splendid art collection as well as regular art and photography exhibitions. 7 hours During a longer layover, managing your time is a bit easier – just make sure you plan ahead and know exactly where you’re going to avoid any time wasting. Catch the Gautrain to downtown Jozi (no, we’re not talking about the hubs of Maboneng or Braam that we locals often limit ourselves to) where urban renewal is everywhere. There are many places to eat, drink and be merry here, some of our favourites being City Central food court where you can tuck into foods like the best burgers in town from Good to Go Eatery plus great cocktails at the mobile Jozi Cocktail Bar, the Joziburg Lane epicentre that runs daily inner-city walking tours starting and ending at this buzzing hangout, and the rad shopping spot that is Work Shop New Town, offering all kinds of locally produced clothes and décor items. If you have time for a leisurely meal, check out Urbanologi inside the Mad Giant brewery in the 1Fox Precinct for the best-tasting craft beer and Asian fusion tapas.

Orlando Towers 12 hours Half a day is the perfect amount of time to explore Soweto, the country’s most popular township and adrenaline-seekers’ capital. There are many significant sites to visit, but Soweto isn’t all about history and the legacy of apartheid – it’s also about food, culture and adventure. You can bungee jump from the Orlando Towers or free-fall inside one of them, go quad-biking or go-karting with Soweto Outdoor Adventures (also located on the grounds of the towers) and then kick back at the colourful shebeen-style restaurant, Chaf Pozi, for a drink and a shisa nyama feast. Take note! If you travel from the airport using Uber, a metre taxi or a rented vehicle, make sure you set outside at least an hour travel time on both ends of the journey. If you opt to use the Gautrain, you’ll need to buy a non-refundable travel card, which you can top up at all stations.

Full disclosure: whether you have a handful of hours or half a day, a layover is not nearly enough time to see Joburg. But, if it’s all you have, you’ll have to jam-pack it with activities – and that’s where we come in. Although locals have been known to spend half a day at a boozy brunch (no judgment!), we also know how to book it around town, so your itinerary doesn’t have to be up in the air.

Flash it back to bioscope days Most people can relate to this: once upon a time, the term bioscope was as popular then as the word ‘cinema’ is now. Located on Fox Street in central Joburg, this ground-breaking 68-seat independent boutique cinema is home to great local and international films.

2

Why you should go: What you won’t find at mainstream cinemas you’re likely to find in this cultural space, which aims to showcase locally produced films that tell our stories. Additionally, The Bioscope has HD-ready projection equipment, which makes it ideal for conferences, launches and other corporate events. What’s more is that the cinema is surrounded by restaurants, cafes and a rooftop bar, where you can enjoy not only the views of the warm, orange sunset colouring Joburg’s sky but their rooftop cinema events. There are numerous experiences that Soweto is known and loved for: from the Hector Pieterson Museum and Vilakazi Street to the Orlando towers where daredevils can bungee jump. But there’s a hotspot that is yet to be another favourite, the Ubuntu Kraal Brewery which brews Soweto’s first craft beer called Soweto Gold.

Why you should go: Beer brewing is an age-old African tradition where women in the family made African beer called umqombothi for traditional ceremonies. With the aim to pass on this tradition, the Kraal Brewery trains female master brewers as well. Founded in 2012 by businessman Ndumiso Madlala this kasi (township) experience is an unforgettable one where you will get a taste and sample craft beers, along with smoked, marinated pork ribs and other succulent cuisines.

Dear drinker: THESE ARE THE CLASSICS

Experience the taste of Joburg

Words Candice May Images Supplied.

Joburg’s vibrant bar scene is a true reflection of its cultural diversity, rife with watering holes of all kinds – walk a few blocks and you’ll run into a crowded neighbourhood favourite, pricy cocktail spot or grungy dive. With so many options, picking one to get a taste of the city’s multiculturalism can be a daunting task, so we’ve rounded up the bars you absolutely need to drink in before you die (or leave Jozi – whichever comes first). Sip retro-cool cocktails Want to get a taste of the back-in-time fun? The vintage glamour of The Cosmopolitan Hotel, a revamped heritage building that was once an Edwardian hotel, stems from the antique bar that’s as much a feature now as it was when the hotel was built in 1899. Known as Lion Bar in a former life, The Cosmopolitan Bar has been resurrected with its original lion-carved bar and some new giant red wingback chairs and serves liquor-loving food. Indulge in your inner high horse while sipping gin-laced cocktails or explore the treasures in the wine cellar downstairs, which boasts well-known vins like Fairview and Newton Johnson as well as small-stock delights, including

De Morgenzon DMZ Maestro White and Raka Select Barrel Merlot. 24 Albrecht Street, Maboneng k zanele@hzrd.co.za K www.thecosmopolitan.joburg

Dive into African art With traditional art, design and materials covering every visible surface, Milk Bar is just the place to visit for an immersive experience of the African aesthetic. A seat at the wooden bar of this colourful, airy drinkery lends a won’tbreak-the-bank taste of African extravagance, with bartenders stirring and shaking throwback potions ranging from the ginger beer-charged Mozambican Hurricane to the Pineapple Ginger Dawa, described as the ‘best medicine in Africa’. If the drinks are flowing too freely, nosh to your heart’s content on bar snacks like lamb meatballs, bobotie nachos and wet biltong. Don’t fill up if you’re planning to have a meal though – sustenance is high with enormous smashed cheeseburgers and pulled brisket bunny chows. 21 Keyes Avenue, Rosebank m 010 594 5128 K www.milkbar.co.za

Track down old Joburg Journalists, hipsters and seasoned daytime drinkers have long favoured the city’s oldest surviving bar and grill. The Radium Beerhall is an icon for a reason – and if its walls could talk, things would get interesting. The old Joburg charm, which comes alive on the live jazz nights when the embossed tin ceiling vibrates in tune with the music, is as much of a draw as the cheap but reliable drinks, pizzas and burgers that circulate the floor on a daily and nightly basis. To get the most out of Radium, ditch the red-andwhite-clothed tables and perch yourself at the bar where you’ll find patrons watching sport and sipping on hard tack and Castle Light – often at the same time. 282 Louis Botha Avenue, Orange Grove m 011 728 3866 K www.theradium.co.za

OF THE MONTH

T

ravis has had 20+ years of experience at top restaurants and bars in the US and has always loved Aviation Gin. As their Head of Brand Education he travels around the world to tell the Aviation story, builds relationships with local distributors, meets customers and creates innovative cocktails with bartenders and mixologists! He also gets to hang out with Ryan Reynolds which is a major bonus if you ask us. How should Aviation Gin be Enjoyed? Neat over ice or in a variety of cocktails. It’s a New Western-style gin, so, it offers a wide medley of flavours making it softer, subtler and more balanced than other gin’s. What are the flavours, tasting notes and distillation process? Botanicals are the first flavour note you’ll notice when you sip on Aviation Gin and not juniper, as in traditional London Dry gins. There is definitely juniper and pine on the nose, but it’s backed up with soft sweet orange, lavender and cardamom. The result is soft and round, leaving a beautiful wide medley of botanicals on the palate. We use a maceration method to beat the hell out of the juniper berries which helps tone down their influence and allows the other botanicals to come to the fore. It’s why it’s such a smooth and easy-drinking gin. Here are the official tasting notes: AROMA: Juniper and pine backed up with sweet

orange, lush lavender, and earthy cardamom. PALATE: Soft and round, with beautiful botanical medley of flavours. Caraway, anise, and a hint of pepper. Light lavender that ties well with herbal tones. FINISH: Long, smooth, peppery with a hint of brazil nuts In terms of the distillation process, Aviation is batch-distilled in small 100-case batches. In your opinion what sets Aviation Gin apart from other gins? THE MIXABILTY OF IT! It’s the first gin to be made with cocktails in mind. Why do you think Aviation Gin makes the perfect cocktail? It’s all about balance with no one botanical overtaking the others. I know it sounds crazy but I just discovered that Aviation Gin on the rocks with a lemon peel pairs perfectly with buttered movie popcorn. It’s absolutely fabulous and really makes the whole movie experience way better! Can you tell us a cool fact about the Gin? It was created by the first bartender distiller partnership, and of course Ryan Reynolds owns it, which is pretty cool. Your Favourite Jozi cocktail bars? arts&culture THREE DECADES OF GROOVING with Mango Groove

If you had told Claire Johnston somewhere in the ’80s that come March 2019 she’d be getting ready to mark the 30th anniversary of the band’s very first album “Mango Groove” she would never have believed you.

And it certainly is a milestone worth celebrating. From the songs that launched the band’s career with their self-titled debut album Mango Groove to the music from their most recent offering Faces to the Sun, fans, both old and new, have a lot to look forward to when the iconic group take to the Teatro stage on March 8th 2019. The show will be a mix of nostalgia with some of the band’s new material and the boundless energy the group is known for.

44

Gearing up for a performance like this is bound to be an emotional experience and Claire shares details about that journey. “It really has been a time of nostalgia and reflection, going through old cuttings and programmes from the last three decades stirs up memories that are as real as yesterday. And of course, you can’t help think about what you have learned from the music.” Hello Joburg • March 2019 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Claire’s reflections are honest and insightful. “The business of music has taught me so much about myself. It’s taught me to be tough and resilient. I have learned to manage my own emotions and feelings and 30 years later I understand myself better because of and through the music. If I could, I’ll tell my younger self to enjoy every moment, pay attention and never squander youthful energy. And most importantly, stop being so hard on yourself.” A career journey that has included singing at Nelson Mandela’s inauguration in 1994 to performing at the Hammersmith Apollo in London in 2015, there is no shortage of career highlights for the band.

Of course, the industry is different today and Claire muses about how much has changed. “Back then, everything happened through record labels. Today, it is incredible how easily artists can get their sound out there.” Claire has certainly had to get her social on. “With the advent of social media, I have realised that I am not the world’s best publicist,” she laughs “but I’ve had to learn. I would highly recommend business and/or social media courses for young artists who are starting out. As a musician, you are an entrepreneur, you’re self-employed and you need to know how to take care of yourself and your career.

If you haven’t seen the band perform in a while or “Performing at the inauguration of former you’re going to check them out for the first time, President Nelson Mandela was more than get ready to let the music move you. just music. It was the culmination of years of hardship. As a country, we went through Friday, 8 March 2019 so much to get to that point and I remember Venue: Montecasino Teatro, Montecasino looking out at the huge crowd that had gathered Blvd, Fourways in front of the Union Buildings as we were linked Time: 20h00 via satellite to the world’s media and thinking Tickets: R300 - R400 that anything was possible.”

Hypnotism: REAL OR WHACK? An honest review of Andre the Hilarious Hypnotist

front accompanied by some rather corny yet endearing jokes by our host for the evening, we still hadn’t made up our mind. As the lights dimmed and the hypnotism started the vibe in the audience was static. Andre began his hypnotism while simultaneously sending the volunteers that weren’t open to his suggestions back to their seats. The performance progressed with everyone in the audience testing out their receptiveness to the tactic and eventually our host settled on his victims for the evening. Andre apparently discovered his hypnotic calling after watching a performance of the late Max Collie in action. Having already studied drama and teaching with a background in psychology, Andre immediately became hooked at the promise of being able to entertain people on stage with his hilarious hypnotic skills. As major sceptics of just about anything in this realm we jumped at the opportunity to attend his show to see just how ‘hilarious’ and ‘skillful’ he really is.

PLAY Semblance The Nintendo Switch is such an incredible little gaming console that allows you to game anywhere with the same high-quality graphics and gaming experience you could get from other consoles that are attached to your television. Semblance is a South African made game that was the first local development made available on the Switch. It’s an artistic masterpiece that allows you to play as a squishy blob called Squish. You bounce around a 2D world that allows you to shape and mould to solve puzzles and ultimately move through the levels. It’s somewhat challenging but glorious to play. It costs a little over R100 as well.

AND THE BLOCKBUSTER GOES TO …Mzansi

T

here are a ton of movies we could tell you about but this month we bring you a selection of films shot locally that caused a huge buzz (and traffic) with some facts you might not have known. Feel free to share #2Bcool@theBraai. Blended Look if we saw Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore wading and frolicking through the faux waves together at the Valley of the Waves, we would have to tell our closest 900 Instagram followers too. We may even angle for a selfie. Barrymore’s and Sandler’s combined comic prowess is enough to tickle anything…or anyone. Shot in Sun City, the story details the hilarious coming together of two single parents and their respective broods. Scene settings include the Palace of the Lost City hotel, the hotel’s pool terrace and the Crystal Court restaurant. Fun fact: Dale Steyn made a cameo appearance as himself. Jury still out: Sandler was alleged to have been attacked by a cheetah on one of his off days while on a private safari.

48

Avengers You can be as blasé as you like in general about most things but not when it comes to Marvel Comic superheroes. So yes, it’s near to damn awesome that Hello Joburg • March 2019 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Johannesburg city centre took centre stage in a fight sequence between this guy called Hulk and this other guy called Iron Man in the 2015 instalment of the Marvel Comic book tale Avengers: Age of Ulron. Just this scene basically brought downtown Jozi to a standstill with 10 days of shooting #take10 and the disruption to daily commutes and traffic made headlines for days as local motorists lost their sh*t. Fun fact: The Rissik Street Post Office makes a cameo appearance as The Rissik Street Post Office. Jury still out: Rumour has that 647 local peeps paraded as extras Safe House A feature like this would just be wrong if it didn’t include action thriller film Safe House staring the delicious Denzel Washington and yummy Ryan Reynolds. We don’t really care about the story-line because it’s Denzel and Ryan #groupies and we know it. The original script called for the film to be set in Rio de Janeiro but riots in the favelas at the time of pre-production meant the insurance companies felt it was too risky to stage it there. The script was re-written to switch the locations to Johannesburg and Cape Town but by all accounts, The Mother City hogged the two stars. Fun fact: One of Ryan’s favourite spots to eat was at Mzoli’s in Gugulethu. Jury still out: It took about four months of negotiation with the City of Cape Town to nail down the four-day window in which filming at Green Point Stadium could occur. So why us? Bar the fact that SAFFERS are just so awesome, the fact remains that with the country’s world-class industry infrastructure, recognized experts and a wide range of locations, South Africa (and Jozi obvs) has fast become an international filming destination of choice.

The minute there’s an international shleb in town, SA twitter is all over it. But say what you want about bored celebrity spotters, here at HJ we think it’s quite telling and flattering that big Hollywood producers realise that magic moments are shot in Jozi (and occasionally in Cape Town).

DE-STRESS AND MANAGE YOUR HEALTH at the Oxford Healthcare Retreat

Even though I love our city, there’s just no denying the fact that it’s often times overly fast-paced. We’re constantly bombarded by the reality of meetings, appointments, deadlines and the stresses of day-to-day living which can all take a toll on our health. That’s why, when I was invited to spend an evening at the Oxford Healthcare Retreat (in the midst of a very stressful couple of weeks), it seemed like a gift from the universe; and boy oh boy was I in for a treat!

T

he reality of life is that often we don’t realize how stressed, over-worked and tired we actually are (myself included) until we have a total burn-out! It’s true that stress, sleep-deprivation, relationship troubles and overall exhaustion negatively affect our health in more ways than one; even though we don’t always realise it. Often times this leads to some pretty serious symptoms – have you been suffering from things like headaches, sleep problems, back and neck pain, weight management issues, anxiety or fatigue? The truth is that the majority of us will give a resounding YES! And that’s where the Oxford Healthcare Retreat comes in to save the day.

Words and Iimages Supplied.

Arriving at the retreat the first thing that stood out was its extraordinary location. Just a stone’s throw away from the CBD, I couldn’t believe that it felt like I had just escaped to a country getaway while being in the heart of the city. Walking through the doors, I was greeted with a serene and peaceful atmosphere that instantly had me feeling more relaxed with each passing minute. The retreat is set amongst a picturesque garden and the décor of the house is as beautiful as it is calming - with soothing colours and natural textures littering the space creating an effortlessly harmonious style that’s perfectly complemented by a soft classical soundtrack in the background. My room was no different; beautifully furnished and luxurious. Even though I was staying at the retreat alone, the staff were warm and welcoming ensuring that I felt comfortable and at home from the moment I set foot through the door. This boutique wellness guesthouse has been developed by a team of accredited medical professionals to provide meaningful, holistic and effective strategies to enhance an overall sense of well-being. The aim here is to help you replenish your energy, gain a greater insight into your relationships and improve your physical wellness so that you are better able to balance and cope with the multiple demands of your work, family and everyday life. You will also have access to an experienced team of psychologists, physiotherapists, medical doctors, yoga and mindfulness practitioners

at the retreat, who will work collectively to address the intertwined relationship between psychological and physical health. The Oxford Healthcare Retreat really focuses on reinvigoration, and; reinvigorated is exactly the word I would use to describe my mindset upon checking out the following morning. But let’s start right at the beginning. I started off my experience with a massage therapy treatment with my lovely therapist and qualified Kundalini Yoga Instructor Karen who was insightful, well-trained and filled with amazing energy. It was honestly one of the best massages I have ever experienced, and Karen truly left me feeling relaxed and calm. It has been proven that massage can be helpful in reducing symptoms of anxiety, digestive disorders, chronic pain and insomnia and I definitely experienced the benefits feeling so soothed afterwards. The attention to detail that’s apparent throughout the guesthouse is outstanding and the food that is healthy, nutritious and tasty (and tailored to my dietary requirements) was a bonus that made the retreat feel that much more accomodating. After dinner, I honestly couldn’t wait to experience a couple more treatments before bed namely the music sensorium – which left me feeling grounded – and the floatation pool. The retreat also offers psychologist and nutritionist consultations, meditation and mindfulness sessions, craniosacral therapy, reflexology, sauna sessions and more depending on your individual needs. The next morning my schedule consisted of waking up - from a super restful night’s sleep that was definitely aided by the sleep gel that was perfectly placed on my pillow - to a green juice that tasted delicious and left me feeling awake and ready for my morning yoga and mindfulness class. All in all my stay was truly memorable, and I left feeling completely re-charged, re-energized and ready to take on the day ahead! For more information on packages or any of the treatments offered, be sure to check out their website. 16 Porter Ave, Melrose m 079 038 0079 1 www.oxfordhealthcareretreat.co.za

VALUE BEYOND LOCATION Airport hotels that will make you want to stay longer The prospect of conferencing at an airport hotel isn’t exactly thrilling. While runway-adjacent crash pads are focused on convenience, they’re rarely convenient for anything delegates actually want to do. However, sometimes they’re surprising in a good way. We’ve rounded up our top hotels at OR Tambo International Airport that compensate for their less-than-ideal locations with restaurants that serve top-notch dishes, spas to ease that post-presentation anxiety and, of course, soundproof windows. ORGANISE AND DECLUTTER

your home

The concepts of minimalism and organisation have been gaining major traction and popularity in mainstream media lately. We’ve seen an influx of books, TV programmes and Netflix documentaries (like the KonMarimethod) infiltrating our day to dayentertainment and so, we thought we’d break down these basic ideas for you. Because who doesn’t want to live a simpler, more organised, clutter-free life?

e put together a list of creative ways to simplify your belongings, get rid of objects that serve no purpose and make space for the things that really matter. Give away one item each day Set a challenge for yourself. Why not go through your house and collect all the things you haven’t used in the last three to four months. These can be clothing items, kitchen appliances or just the random bits and bobs everyone has laying around the house. Then for a whole month commit to giving away, selling or donating an item or two every single day. If you’re having trouble figuring out which items are worth keeping and which you

should get rid of, try to think about whether or not the item has brought you joy recently? If the answer is no, then say bye-bye! By getting rid of an item daily you won’t feel overwhelmed by letting go of too much all at once and you’ll have time to really asses the importance of each of your belongings. It’s simple, just take it one day at a time. Try the closet hanger experiment It’s a fact that most of us have way too many clothes. Think about your wardrobe and how many items of clothing you don’t wear, don’t fit or just no longer compliment your personal style. If you can’t identify these items or you’re having trouble deciding which pieces

for a minimalist approach to living

Keep things together A simple organisation system will really change the way your home feels. Start by categorizing your belongings as you go through them. Keeping things that serve similar purposes together will streamline the way your home operates, help you maximize functionality and just make your life easier! Store like items close to where you will use them and you’ll not only know where they are

when you need them, but you’ll reduce some of the little frustrations in your daily life. Keep the mugs near the coffee machine, the pots near the stove and so on. If an item doesn’t belong in a certain room, move it! Stop buying objects that you don’t need It’s time to change your mindset. Stop spending money on things and start spending money on experiences. It’s true that this is a pretty millennial mindset to have but there might just be some major advantages to living like this. Instead of blowing cash on irrelevant items that won’t serve you any purpose in the long term and will just end up collecting dust in a draw, rather save money for experiences with your partner, friends and family. Not only, will this automatically reduce the clutter in your home but, it will automatically lead to a fuller, richer life.

are worth hanging on to try this simple trick. Hang all your clothes with the hangers in the reverse direction. After you wear an item, return it to the closet with the hanger facing the correct direction. After a few months, you’ll have a clear picture of which clothes you no longer reach for and can easily discard. This cool little trick can also be applied to any area of your home. Try it for yourself.

DR CARMEN Briner

Dr Carmen Briner is a medical doctor with over 10-years’ experience in accident and emergency medicine and is also a mom to a beautiful, baby girl. She has a master’s degree in public health and is passionate about disease prevention and health education, which is why she started OneAid. We sat down with her to find out more.

One piece of advice you would give to all parents and caregivers? Be kind to yourself. If you’re feeling exhausted, frustrated or overwhelmed, take a break before you break.

How do you keep your work and mom life healthy and balanced? I leave my work at work and when I come home, I am a mother first and foremost. No matter how stressful my day has been, my time at home is for my family. Hello Joburg • March 2019 • Hellojoburg.co.za

One thing you can’t live without in your kitchen? Olive oil! I love cooking with olive oil because of its health benefits but it’s also great for your hair and skin. Top 3 first aid tips? • Make sure you have every emergency number saved on your phone because, in South Africa, there are different numbers for different emergencies. • Rinse burns under cool running water for at least 15 minutes as soon as possible after they have happened. • If something is bleeding, apply firm pressure until the bleeding is controlled. What’s your favourite thing to do to wind down with your family? I love to cook with my daughter and always invite the rest of my family over for a weekend lunch. Where can our readers find your products? You can purchase my Minikit or download my first aid pocket guide online at www.oneaid.co.za or you can contact me directly at Carmen@ oneaid.co.za

Tell us a little bit more about OneAid and its conception? OneAid is a platform that focuses on preventing and reducing the risk of childhood injuries by offering useful information, advice and tips through the use of blog posts. Social media is also central to my business. It’s an easily accessible and far-reaching tool through which to disseminate information and I don’t think healthcare professionals utilise social media enough to promote health and safety. I’ve also developed the MiniKit; an on-the-go first-aid kit geared towards common childhood injuries. The MiniKit includes a detailed first aid guide, which features simple, easy to follow steps on what to do when your child has a minor accident or fall.
