he time for chocolate and children running riot while rushing on sugar has come… and I’m not even going to lie Hello Joburgers, we haven’t helped things. We do, in fact, have a chocolate page in this issue. And you’ll want to lick the page. However, we’ve also tried to help. We’ve found five awesome ways to keep your children occupied during the holidays. Think ice cream, nature and science! Quite a combination right? You’ll definitely want to flick through to our Leisure Activities section. We’ve also got a few fun activities to keep you busy for a day or two – checking out The Rand Show, breaking a sweat at Bounce and then chilling out at the Ice Rink. We’ve got your holiday plans sorted! Speaking of holidays, our Travel section is a must-read this month! Considering a trip to the Middle East? You’ll want to book a ticket straight after reading our fabulous feature on Dubai. Now that place knows how to attract tourists – you won’t believe the amusement parks they have there! If you’re after a more relaxed vacation, our article on the spectacular MSC Cruises will make you crave the ocean. Another thing you’ll be craving after nosing through this issue will be pasta… our Restaurant of the Month is an absolute gem! Good ole Italian, cooked in a way that would make nonna proud. Seriously Hello Joburgers, if you haven’t dined at The Eatalian yet, we recommend you get cracking. Since I’m being honest, it is one of my all-time favourite places to eat. I’ve been going there for years (even before they moved to their current Parkmore location), and I’ve never been disappointed. Our beauty section has a little something for the guys and gals. Ladies will love our feature on the best facials in Jozi – plus you have the chance to win one! While guys will want to preen, pluck and polish their ‘stashes after getting a look at Bianca’s Lust List. All in all, this issue is packed with flavour and fun. If you’re chilling at home over the Easter break, or taking the family on a much-earned holiday, the team at Hello Joburg hopes you stay safe. And reminds you to pack your favourite magazine along with your sunscreen! xoxo

ENCHANTED EATING

This adventure is tucked away inside the Thornbirds Wedding & Conference Centre. No journey to the South is complete without a visit to this sanctuary, nestled amongst the evergreen trees and garden gnomes. It feels homely and inviting, and you never want to leave. Outdoor dining has never been more enticing, especially since us Joburgers are used to honking and traffic fumes while we dine. Fortunately, this country house ensures you’ll escape the city woes! The restaurant is family-owned and was established in November 2012. It’s vital we announce that there is a pooch menu. Your furry friends can choose from a gourmet pawsome snack of sliced sausages, or 200g of decadent cooked mince. On a diet? We’ve heard the plain grilled chicken breasts are delightful. For us two legged creatures, Miss Grace also uses only the finest ingredients, especially the A-Grade beef. We recommend starting with the salad bar seasonal and fresh, and then trying a sarmie from the sandwich shed.

hen you enter Miss Grace’s Country House for the first time, you’re taken aback by the beautiful surroundings and the enchantment of this fairy-tale like secret garden. It’s a true hidden gem, so much so that we almost didn’t want to share it with you. However, it’s too special not to share!

ALL YOU KNEAD IS LOVE…

and a love of dough!

Our hands are clapping and our hips are doing the happy dance, because the carbs-on-carbs kind of lifestyle is right up our alley. Sorry to all the banters and Tim Noakes fans, there’s a new diet in town, and it’s called the nom-nom diet. Just roll with it!

ello Joburgers, this is the best news since sliced bread! Paul’s is a familyowned, French bakery and restaurant who’s baking traditions and savoir-faire have been passed down over five generations. And it’s finally arrived in Jozi!

Traced back to 1889 in the small town of Croix, in Northern France, this quaint little bakery has become a worldwide success. We can understand why this 127-year-old brand has outlasted and outwitted its predecessors. Its new bakery can be found in Melrose Arch, and will continue to grow and cultivate into a more stores over the next five years.

6

What else can you expect? The skilled artisan bakers will craft breads and pastries before your eyes in the bespoke bakery and patisserie, while offering an extensive indulgent range of breakfasts, brunches, lunches, afternoon teas and dinners. So the next time its lunch o’clock, and you’re standing in front of your salad asking it to be a donut, remember that Paul’s is just a phone call away! Hello Joburg • April 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

The grand opening took place in March, but we were fortunate enough to attend a pre-launch for a baking class with master baker Richard Blades from Paul International. We had a private peek behind the scenes of what it takes to run this 180-seater bakery-café, and we baked our very own bread. Is there anything better than the intoxicating smell of fresh, home-baked bread? We will neither confirm nor deny whether we ate the entire loaf.

ew things excite South Africans quite like a nail biting sports match, a refreshing drink on a hot day, and a solid, reliable pick-up. So we were pretty chuffed to join the all new, built for Africa, Nissan Navara for her maiden media voyage in the Western Cape a few weeks back.

It was a road trip that started early. At 5am to be exact. It was a flash back to when we were kids, except there was no falling asleep on the back seat on this trip. Albeit dark, the Navara’s interior lights were more than adequate as we acquainted ourselves with the route map.

The Navara’s extensive local testing also means that this baby comes with one of the most comprehensive list of accessories ever at launch, and they’re available immediately.

Twenty two journalists, a dozen brand new 2.3 litre turbodiesel engine Navaras, and roughly 400km’s of all terrain to drive, and we were off. The journey started with a trip up Kanonkop Hill and with its 140kW of power, 450Nm of push and pull, and active break limited slip differential, The range of accessories includes cosmetic additions such as headlamp the Navara took the rocky inclines and declines in her stride. and departure angles (33 and 27.9 degrees respectively). The launch of the 4x4 Navara is the first step in the brand’s plan to underline Nissan’s long-standing reputation as the leading pick-up brand in Africa, with its 80 year plus bakkie heritage in the country.

The Nissan Navara lands in South Africa as part of Nissan’s on-going worldwide introduction of this global pick-up. The model succeeds the previous generation Navara, which was sold in South Africa alongside its sibling – the Nissan Hardbody. The Hardbody remains in production in Nissan’s Rosslyn plant. The new Navara is, or will soon be, on sale in virtually all parts of the world, including North America (Canada and Mexico), South America, Europe, the Middle East and Australasia. Initially, the Navara range will consist of three double cab models, offering a choice of Mid- or High-specification, and a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic gearbox. All models will be powered by the new 140 kW YS23DDT twin-turbo diesel engine. As the weather cleared, we hit some high speed gravel roads, which really showed off the cars class leading suspension. The Navara’s 5 link coil suspension, fitted to its solid ladder-frame chassis, is seriously worth writing home about, giving the vehicle an SUV ride comfort quality that you just don’t expect from a bakkie. While a number of ‘passenger-vehicle-turned-pick-up’ models or SUV conversions have, in the past, boasted a semi-independent rear suspension, the Navara pioneers a built-for-purpose coil spring five-link rear suspension that has been lauded across the world. From there we hit the dunes in Lamberts Bay for some sand driving - which really showed off the bakkie’s improved approach

Back on trend In case you didn’t notice, chokers are back in! One of our faves is the Azure thea choker (R150), but we’re lusting after the bold red velvet ribbon choker, with a statement pendant, emerald green and purple stones and graceful, dangling pearls.

THE JEWELS OF INSTAGRAM!

H

ello Joburgers, we adore local collaborations – so when we got wind of Sundari’s partnership with Instagram sensation Mischka Dhuloo, aka Dopestchiqq, we simply had to check it out! Needless to say, we were not disappointed. If you haven’t already heard of the online store Sundari, then be prepared to meet your new best friend. The jewellery is totally affordable, bang on trend and has a little bit of everything. In fact, the pieces are so popular, you often have to check out the Instagram page to see if your favourite one is in stock. Yashna Chetty, founder of Sundari revealed that she started the online store when she was a full-time student, because she was frustrated with having to pay loads of money when trying to get her hands on the latest fashion and accessory trends. “Whenever I found something that I loved, I would look at the price tag and sigh in disappointment.” Relatable right? Mischka Dhuloo, aka Dopestchiqq is the brand ambassador for Sundari, and also a highly recognised personality on Instagram. She got to hand-pick the pieces to feature in her jewellery line – and we love every single one of them! It’s all trendy and quirky, yet classy and chic! Mischka is renowned for making the most affordable items look great, so of course she was Yashna’s first choice. Check out some of our top picks from the collection… and the best bit? They’re all available for under R150!

All about the earrings!

If bold is what you’re going for, you’ve got to slip your fingers into the Apollo ring set (R80). A stack of four rings complete with splashes of blue and funky cross, flower and circle charms, they’re too cute to pass up! However, our absolute favourite has got to be the Mavros ring set (R90). We’re complete suckers for anything silver and these understated beauties are right up our alley.

Can we just take a minute to appreciate these Lauviah earrings (R90)? Those gorgeously bright turquoise stones with diamante bands… perfection!

Find out more about this incredible collaboration! Head to www.hellojoburg.co.za!

Must-have bangles! Simple yet elegant, with just a hint of bo-ho chic, the Deo bangle (R70) is something every woman should have in her jewellery case. Closely followed by the gorgeous Aspro bracelet (R100) – it’s one of those ‘my rings attached to my bracelet’ things and we just love it! The perfect piece of statement jewellery!

dining out A SERVING OF ITALY ello Joburgers, we’ve loved this restaurant for years. We’re not at all ashamed to admit we may have been hiding it from you. However, it’s time your senses feasted on the heavenly bounty that comes from The Eatalian in Parkmore.

If you’re wandering up 11th Street, you’ll be incredibly tempted to head into The Eatalian. And you really should - the welcoming atmosphere spills out the doors and into the street, followed by the enticing smell of freshly roasted coffee. The space is open and inviting, with lots of copper accents, rustic wooden tables and barebrick counters. Soft amber lights hang low from the ceiling, there’s a gorgeous dark wood case displaying the selection of vino, and tucked away on one side is a lovely mezzanine level where you can indulge and watch the world go by.

20

What we love – besides the food – is that one wall is covered in empty, hanging picture frames, one or two doors and even a bicycle! It’s quirky, Hello Joburg • April 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

interesting and surprisingly, it all goes together perfectly. Pop into this deli and restaurant for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner… after-work drinks or Saturday night cocktails – come for it all! The staff are friendly, funny and they treat you like family. Their knowledge of the menu is comforting, and many of the staff have been with the owner and manager, Fabio Razzino for years. The menu comprises of recipes that have been passed down the generations in Fabio’s famiglia. There are dishes his nonna used to make in her kitchen back home, and they’re delicious!

You’ll often spot Fabio tasting dishes before they leave the pass, to ensure they’re nothing but excellent! The Carpaccio di Manzo for starters – so fresh and thinly sliced drizzled with delish parmigiana, rocket and lemon. Our go-to spaghetti bolognaise never disappoints, and Hello Joburgers, when we say the portions are generous – we mean it! We suggest you tuck into a hearty helping of the Linguini Pollo – tender chicken strips with gorgonzola and sun-dried tomatoes in an indulgent, creamy garlic sauce. There are also gluten-free pasta options available! Not keen on pasta? Try the Pescatore pizza, a sea-sational combination of mozzarella, tomato, calamari, mussels, prawns, chilli and garlic. The menu leaves you spoiled for choice, from fresh Norwegian Salmon with a lemon butter sauce, to slow-cooked Oxtail Alla Romana or the Panini deluxe or fish and chips.

Top it all off with a bottle of the Pandora’s Box Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and dessert – of course. You’ve got to try the Tiramisu, and our fave – Gelato Fatto in Casa, which is the home-made ice cream with a sauce of our choice. Magnifico! Be warned pasta-lovers, this spot can get pretty busy. If you’re planning a special occasion, or expecting a bunch of friends, call ahead to avoid missing out on the deliciousness. 126 11th Street, Sandton. 1 011 326 8786 f @theeatalianristorante @theetalianparkmore

chef of the month CHAD BOSMAN Executive Sous Chef at Medeo Restaurant I think the interaction of people around food is what made my family and I fall in love with food. The experience that one gets from food and cooking is so rewarding. You can just see it on their faces - the joy of producing good food.” Chad credits the creative nature of ingredients as his main inspiration for his delish creations, amongst other things. “You can create a whole dish just using a simple vegetable such as beetroot.” And believe us Hello Joburgers, its divine! He also enjoys taking a dish that everyone knows and twisting the flavours and textures to create a completely different experience.

I

f you’re after the finest Mediterranean inspired food in Jozi, look no further than Medeo Restaurant, nestled in the gorgeous Palazzo hotel, Montecasino. It’s not just the food that will reel you in, you’ll fall for Chad – hook, line and sinker.

He’s Jozi born and bred, but his family moved to Port Elizabeth when he was four years old – which means he was lucky enough to spend his childhood on the beach, ‘playing sport and getting into some sort of trouble with my mates at school,’ he confesses. However, his family missed old Jozi town and he ended up moving to Pretoria where he ended up honing his culinary skills at Prue Leith’s Chef ’s Academy.

24

His passion for food is clear, and one of his earliest memories is of his mother baking chocolate cakes, and letting him lick the whisk. “Food has always been a big part of my life. Both my Mother and Grandmother were good cooks, and could cook and bake many a chef under the table. Hello Joburg • April 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

The food at Medeo is a feast for your eyes, soul and belly – guaranteed! Chad and the team definitely know how to appeal to their customers. “As humans we obviously eat with our eyes first. Here at Medeo, we produce dishes that people know, but with a twist. We also create dishes with unusual flavor pairings, but still stick to our foundations. The food is based off seasonal produce and the highest quality cuts of meat, which we source as locally as possible.” “I enjoy pushing the envelope of what you can do with food. We once had this crazy idea of doing a savory candy floss, so for 2 days that’s all we did,” he laughed. The team played with recipes, and in the end made a Quail Ravioli, Quail Consomme, Smoked Shimeji and a Mushroom Candy Floss. “At the end, it’s the journey of creating food that works.” Palazzo hotel Montecasino, Montecasino Boulevard, Fourways 1 011 510 3000 5 www.tsogosun.com/medeo

He's also been to America and cooked up a storm in Miami before heading home to work with Executive Chef, Gerard Vingerling who heads up Medeo.

ello Joburgers, hold onto your chef hats because this innovative idea will blow your socks off! It’s called Chefit, and to say we’re utterly impressed would be an understatement. If, like us, you’re all about Pinterest recipes, then you’ll understand our inner turmoil. We try, but we’re not polished chefs. We’re more the ‘we’re proud that we tried’ kind of team. Never fear, because Chefit has our culinary dreams covered! This offer is resplendent in a convenient, efficient, instant delivery format. We love it because all you need is twenty-four hours. You heard us right - order your very own private chefs to any location, within twenty-four hours. This chef will custom design an entire menu just for you. Gluten free? No problem. Lactose Intolerant? No apology necessary. On a sugar-free diet? No worries. Love Mexican, adore eastern cuisine or a fan of fine dining? They have it all covered. Anything you want, right at your own dining room table. Invite up to ten of your friends along, or don’t and just keep it an intimate dinner for four. Whatever your heart desires, will come to fruition thanks to Chefit! So naturally, we had to test out this easy and convenient ‘Private dining service’ that makes dining at home a leisurely, effortless and stylish affair. Chef Clinton arrived an hour before dinnertime. He cooked, fried, roasted and prepared a gorgeous three course Mexican fiesta. Let’s just say, the plates were cleaned and not only by our knives and forks. Clinton cleaned up our entire kitchen, and left as if we had dreamed up the whole evening! Who needs a dishwasher? Plus, there’s no more apprehension over a dinner party. A ten out of ten dining experience.

Book a dinner online for 4 to 12 people using the Chefit website. Choose from one of their seasonal menus on offer, or custom make your own.

Then, a day before your dinner, you’ll be matched with a Chefit Chef.

On the day of your dinner, Chefit will send you an SMS to let you know that the Chef is on the way. 5 www.chefit.co.za | f @chefitsa | @chefit_sa t @Chefit_sa |

GREG NICOLAOU

A

of Cilantros Restaurant & Bar

far cry from fast food and his potato peeling days, Greg Nicolaou is serving up urban contemporary cuisine in the hub of Sandton, at his eatery Cilantros in Nelson Mandela Square - together with Michael Yiallouris.

Whether a taste tickles your fancy or you’re in pursuit of a plated feast, no order is too big or small. Dedicated to superior service, Greg believes excellence should not be reserved for fine dining. His greatest reward as a Restaurateur, is powering through a pressured pass, and scanning the room to see satisfaction at every table. Teamwork makes the dream work, and is essential in the ingredients of a great kitchen. The synergy of a strong team is paramount.

Hailing from a family of hosts with a passion for hospitality, Greg’s love of food and beverage was born behind the bar. He was serving drinks to crowds of over 400 people before he was old enough to frequent a bar himself ! Under his industrious father at the Cypriot Club, Greg learnt the ropes of the restaurateur game and became hooked on the adrenalin rush. Words Taryn Louch

He’d pay any price for special service, and would love the experience of being served by Gordon Ramsay. On local soil, you’ll find him at Mezepoli or Licorish Bistro. He’s also been known to make a mean burger and chips too, if that’s what you’re after.

Meaning coriander in Italian and Spanish, Cilantros presents patrons with a plethora of Mediterranean offerings, depending on their mood. From the Italian influence of pizza and pasta, to the Spanish style tapas and Portuguese selection of seafood. Cilantros is unique in the fact that their offering is not.

A FRESH

LOOK

Fall back in love with your face

T

he best pampering for us usually comes in the form of a facial treatment. Ageing is a fact of life and we’re all fighting our biological clocks, so we thought we would try out five facials and give you the low down. Remember Hello Joburgers; great skin doesn’t happen by chance, it happens by appointment.

QMS Pure Oxygen facial QMS Medicosmetics is formulated by Erich Schulte, AKA Dr. Med, who is an aesthetic surgeon, lecturer and international authority on skin aging and skin regeneration. QMS is a cosmeceutical skincare brand and that’s why we love it. Not only is it a luxurious pampering experience, but you’ll leave with the best results. During the facial, pure oxygen is streamed onto the skin, which instantly reduces fine lines and wrinkles. Its light, it’s refreshing and totally addictive. Our next favorite part of the treatment is the algae mask. This mask instantly improves dullness and flatness of the skin. The facial promotes skin cell regeneration and it gets a double thumbs up from us.

Omorovicza Gold Hydralifting facial This treatment is only available at the exclusive Four Seasons, Johannesburg. Then a rose scented gold mask deploys hyaluronic acid in three different forms to plump and nourish the skin, while bio-available gold repairs micro-damage to strengthen the skin. You’ll also receive a back massage and an arm massage! Wait there’s more - you can’t leave without a sprinkling of gold shimmer oil, which adds a subtle sparkle to arms and décolleté. You read that right… Chocolate beer. We’re not complaining! We have quite the sweet tooth, and we love to knock back a nice cold one every now and again. Launch date: 2015 How it’s made: Milk Stout is brewed with water, yeast and hops - but it’s the dark roasted malt which gives this beer its unique colour and flavour. It also has lactose sugar for body and residual sweetness. Made with real cocoa, Castle Milk Stout Chocolate is brewed with speciality malts to create its malty chocolate character. This richness is complemented by the creamy smooth taste of Castle Milk Stout. With an alcohol content of 4.5%, it’s designed to be sipped and enjoyed for an easy drinking experience.

The Play That Goes Wrong promises to be an absolute hoot, and is playing at Montecasino until 24 April 2017. The play features around the highly accident prone and the somewhat inept Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society – who come in to some money from an unexpected benefactor. They decide that putting on a murder mystery with their windfall would be a great idea – but everything that can possibly go wrong – does, of course! One by one the incidents get weirder and more hilarious until the entire audience is weeping with laughter and in complete disarray! Expect excellent comedic timing, expert verbal and physical funnies and one of the best comedies to hit stage in a long time (think Fawlty Towers and Noises Off here). Directed by legendary funny man Alan Committee, this promises to be a laugh a minute. Tickets range between R100 and R220 and can be purchased on Computicket. Montecasino Boulevard, Fourways, 2191 5 www.montecasino.co.za 1 011 510 7000

If you enjoy a great art exhibition, pop in to Gallery MOMO for a look at Khaya Witbooi’s – History Begins with A Garden. The collage style paintings, composed of a combination of stencilling and spray paint on canvas, are strongly lead by a pop-art and graffiti style.

Words Heather Hook

The exhibition is curated by Mariella Frazoni and focusses on the role played by gardens, and gardeners in the Colonial Cape. The exhibition is a powerful combination of knowledge and ignorance, culture and nature, mixed with the power dynamics of underlying opposition between intellectual production and handicraft. Entrance is free and the gallery is open 9am to 6pm weekdays and 9am to 4pm on Saturdays. 52 7th Avenue, Parktown North, Johannesburg, 2193 5 www.gallerymomo.com 1 011 327 3247

Check out The Caucasian Chalk Circle on stage at The Fringe Theatre (part of the Joburg Theatre complex) from 5 to 23 April 2017. The play is relevant to the current affairs taking place in South Africa, and to some extent the rest of society around the world. The play takes place in a made-up town called Grusinia, and involves a government expert who is sent to resolve a land dispute between two groups of farmers. We’re sure you can imagine, the events play out to an interesting conclusion. The Caucasian Chalk Circle is set in a play-within-a-play type structure, which helps to promote the use of Brecht’s epic theatre techniques. Show times are 11am, 3pm and 8pm. Tickets cost between R100 and R180 each. Loveday Street and Hoofd Street, Johannesburg. 5 www.joburgtheatre.com 1 0861 670 6780 Hello Joburg • April 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

travel LEVELLING THE SEAS Hop aboard, mateys!

C

ruising is no longer reserved for the rich and famous – or those dodgy newly-weds that wake up on their honeymoon with the blushing bride suddenly ‘gone’. We watch too many B-grade budget films - we know!

Bad movie narratives aside, we would go as far as to say that the MSC Cruises group has levelled the playing field when it comes to cruising. It’s competitive pricing has allowed South Africans and tourists alike the chance to enjoy without having to take out a second mortgage on the house.

Words Carly Ritz

For anyone that wants the pleasure of a stint on the sea, without the enormous time investment (that diaries don’t often allow), then this is the cruise line for you. The MSC group has 12 ultra-modern ships that have been designed to deliver a superior holiday experience. Each ship has been designed and decorated by master architects. MSC is said to offer the leading percentage of sea-view balcony cabins per ship, worldwide. Perfect for those special pictures! So we had to check it out. We were all aboard the MSC Sinfonia earlier this year, and we loved it. From the accommodation, to the food,

service and entertainment, who knew that a few days at open sea was all we needed. The suites have everything you need for the ultimate ‘chill out’. From the double bed (which can be converted into two singles on request), air conditioning, space for all those clothes you didn’t need, a bathroom with indulgent tub, TV, telephone to wireless internet… all creature comforts are taken care of. When it comes to hospitality, the MSC Sinfonia’s attention to detail makes their cruise experiences worth raving about. Cabins are cleaned twice daily and there is multilingual staff to cater to various languages and guests.

The MSC Sinfonia prides itself on its high staff per guest ratio and personal approach to guests needs

One of the most popular routes is the 4 night Durban trip to the Portuguese Island journey, with a variety of excursions available on the other side from sea kayaking and snorkelling in coral gardens to rocketing across the water on an 8 rider. Then of course, there’s the option to stay on the ship and drink cocktails by the pool which is equally adventurous. All that activity and lounging around can work up an appetite. Believe us when we tell you that there was no shortage of food. From casual dining on the deck to a variety of formal dining options, plush tablecloths and all, to a seriously stuff your face buffet There’s also entertainment for days. Broadway and Las Vegas style theatrical performance, live music and dancing will keep you humming on board throughout your stay. For those that might want to kick things into health gear, MSC Cruises offers a wide choice of sports facilities and a very comprehensive sports centre too– with the most magic views that will inspire you to work out – for real!

DREAM OF DUBAI H

A recipe for adventure!

ello Joburgers, we recently embarked on an incredible journey to the Middle East. We decided it was about time we added some sparkle into our lives - even for only two days, and what we discovered can only be described as pure magic.

Taste the world at Global Village It’s hard to drive past the Global Village and not be mesmerised by its size. As you step in, you’ll experience cultures from across the world - and some of the best cuisines from all over the world! With over 75 countries, you’ll find a variety of delicacies… think Hummus from Egypt, Turkish delight from Turkey and Pad Thai from Thailand. HJ recommends: Visit the South African market and buy some natural raw cocoa butter. Also pop past India and buy an aromatic selection of spices. 5 www.globalvillage.ae

Walkabout at Market OTB Market Outside The Box (Market OTB) is an event during the Dubai Shopping Festival that brings local, regional and international designers and entrepreneurs to Burj Park. We love this market because it celebrates local talent. There are unique pieces and you’ll even be able to get your name engraved on a chain - in Arabic of course. The market sells yoga pants, Prada tailored jackets, Arabic candy, jewellery… name it, they’ve got it. 5 www.dsfmarketotb.ae Be dazzled at Dubai Mall Where make-believe meets reality. It’s every girls dream - especially during the Dubai Shopping Festival. The Dubai Mall is a celestial creation. Hello Joburgers, it’ll blow your socks off. With all the top end designer labels, restaurants and retailers, this is one of the top retail destinations in the world. HJ recommends: Visit the Dubai Mall, Underwater Zoo & Aquarium inside the mall.

48

One of the largest tanks in the world, it features one of the world’s largest viewing panels (at 32.8m wide and 8.3m high). You cannot leave without visiting the Dubai Fountain, which is a spectacular show of lights and water. You’ll be captivated by the lights reflected up the tallest building in the world, The Burj Khalifa. 5 www.hedubaimall.com Hello Joburg • April 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Delve into Dubai Historic District It’s always teatime, so be sure to stop at this oasis of quiet and calm in one of Dubai’s oldest neighborhoods. The Arabian Tea House Café is a genuine haven, where the buzz of the city is replaced by chirping birds, rustling trees and the creak of wicker furniture. Dig into healthy sandwiches, or treat yourself to a pastry while deciding between over 100 types of tea, including a house special blend of black tea with fruit and herbs. 5 www.arabianteahouse.co

Explore Dubai Parks and Resorts If it’s brand new, state of the art, adrenalin-seeking, larger-than-life amounts of amusement you’re after, then Dubai Parks and Resorts is the spot. It’s the very first integrated resort destination in the region and is home to (get ready for it!) three world-class theme parks! Inside you’ll find Bollywood Park, Legoland, Motiongate and Riverland Dubai, the grand entrance plaza, and a Polynesian themed family resort. HJ recommends: Choose one park and explore. Our favourite was Shrek World. Snap your picture with Puss in Boots and dine like an ogre by indulging in molten lava chocolate with vanilla ice cream. Also pop past Smurf World - it’s a fantasyland of wonder and nostalgia. P.S. Construction started in July 2016 for Six Flags Dubai, the fourth theme park to open at Dubai Parks and Resorts. It launches in 2019 and marks the start of phase two of the destination’s development. 5 www.dubaiparksandresorts.com

Spoil yourself at The Palace Downtown Dubai This is true UAE style in its finest form. There is an incredible Arabic influence - the setting of vivid Arabia and a gorgeous view of the Dubai fountain. This location is beautiful, exclusive, secluded and offers an outdoor dining area. HJ recommends: Book a meal at Ewaan and dine in style. The staff is relaxed and welcoming and it’s here where you’ll find the true spirit of Dubai. 5 www.theaddress.com Relax in comfort at Rove City Centre hotel This hotel is contemporary, comfortable, fuss-free and just what you’d expect from a business style hotel. With friendly staff, it’s affordable and located right by the airport. Whether you’re visiting for business, leisure or a bit of both, this hotel is a pleasing choice. 5 www.rovehotels.com

Visit the Dubai Opera House This is the definitive destination for performing arts, and truly celebrates the arts, its culture and old world glamour. So go on Hello Joburgers, treat yourselves to a night out at Downtown Dubai. You won’t regret it! Showing this month: Blue Man Group from 11 to 15 April. Raiders of the Lost Ark from 19 to 21 April. 5 www.dubaiopera.com

Venture to IMG Worlds of Adventure

Words Bianca Spinner

IMG Worlds of Adventure is the largest temperature controlled, indoor themed entertainment destination in the world. It covers an area of over 1.5 million square feet! There isn’t enough time in a day to explore it and its restaurant-themed movie cafes, adrenaline-pumping roller coasters, thrill rides, a spine-tingling tour similar to the Haunted Hotel and loads more attractions. HJ recommends: Visit the retails stores and take a piece of this fantasyland home with you. There are also over thirteen cuisines within the park, so dig in! If you’re brave, a ride on the Powerpuff Girls roller coaster is a must, and if you’re a little less brave, visit the Ben 10 5D cinema. P.S. Another indoor theme park is being created. It’ll have a walkway joining the parks, with a retractable roof, and it’ll be under two million square feet! 5 www.imgworlds.com

NEED TO KNOW: Flights: Emirates has daily deals throughout the year. They are one of the world’s finest airlines and the service is always impeccable, even if you’re not on first class. When to visit: November to March, due to the extreme heat. The cost: 48 hours including flights, around R13000 to R15000 per person. What to pack: Ladies, it’s best to avoid tiny shorts, very short skirts, tube tops and crop tops. Although most of Dubai are not conservative, it’s important to dress respectfully and conservatively. Pack sunblock and summer clothing. Transport: You can use the Metro, buses and waterbuses too. You can easily catch a cab. However, if you’re planning to travel to Abu Dhabi, hire a car and drive yourself. Hello Joburg • April 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

We’ve found the most ideal spot too!

The space is located on top of the Core Building so the views from the wraparound balcony are quite awe inspiring. The multitude of different sized rooms on site makes it a great venue for any size gathering. Be it for 6 to 600 people, they can accommodate you. We also quite like that they understand the word budget, and are happy to help you construct your ideal events package to satisfy even the most stringent accounts department. The Focus Rooms supplies a fun-filled alternative to conferencing and events, complete with state-of-the-art facilities and rooms to suit your individual needs.

They do enjoy the odd pun and corny joke, evident in the décor and fun items dotted around the venue.

With creative ideas and unique, fun-filled experiences, there’ll be no more embarrassing team building activities. Did we mention that pretty much all their rooms can be configured to banquet, cinema, U and double U-shape, boardroom or schoolroom? Jackpot!

No one likes monotonous conferences with uncomfortable chairs and lights dim enough to send you to sleep. The Focus Rooms do exciting, fun and different! How about a massage during the tea break? They got it. Popcorn and cupcakes snacks? They got it. How about a customised smoothie to start your day on a healthy note? They have that too. This places doesn’t want you to hear ‘conference’ and cringe. Focus Rooms keeps things fun and exciting – from mini golf on the deck during tea break – to a complete revamp of the deck for lunch time – things are constantly changing, and that works quite well, might we add.

For something different, give the super friendly team a call. Put together a different event with a twist, that your attendees or staff will be talking about for a long while to come!

The staff are friendly, and the food options are creative. From buffet to tray service – from individual milkshakes to yummy easy-to-eat finger snacks, or even a three course sit down

“This is a special initiative that forms part of our CSI for the year,” explains JEC CEO Craig Newman. “We are delighted to be celebrating 10 years of this programme, honouring the inspiring men and women who dedicate their lives to public service.” “I am proud to be associated with men and women who care for these families,” says Gauteng Acting Commissioner, Lt-Gen Lesetja Joel Mothiba. “We must look after the orphans and widows of the heroes and heroines who died in the line of duty, protecting the citizens of this country.”

While the event will be a celebration of dedication and hard work, Craig Newman would also like to appeal for more support for Letsema La Bana. “This programme acknowledges the commitment of the SAPS to serve the community and we should continue to recognise their efforts,” he concluded. South Africa’s favourite family event, the Rand Show returns to the JEC from 14-23 April 2017. It’s a 10 day experience not to be missed!

LIVED-IN LUXURY Who doesn’t love a little vintage?

H

ello Joburgers, we’re a little obsessed with the Vintage Cotton Collection from Volpes – The Linen Company, and you’ll be too…

Words Victoria Taylor

Vintage cotton is also known as washed cotton, and with it comes a feeling of luxury and nostalgia. It doesn’t have that stiff feeling that most newly purchased linen has… which is why we love it. It’s got that lived in feeling, like you’ve had it (and loved it) for years – except that it’s brand new! Volpes has brought this latest vintage design innovation into SA stores, based on top international trends, and people just can’t get enough. The vintage finish is created by pre-washing (or stone washing), which softens the fabric. To achieve this, the linen is washed together with natural and manmade stones to produce that worn-out

appearance to a newly manufactured fabric. The result is a slightly faded fabric colour with a comforting, vintage feel. All that, with the same quality that you expect from Volpes products – dream come true! Our favourite thing about this fabulous collection? The neutral colours (soft whites, beige, grey and duck egg) mean we can add pops of colour using throws and scatter cushions. Oh, and the linen still feels absolutely amazing – without the need to iron it! It’s all available online. Seriously Hello Joburgers, does it get any better than that? 5 www.volpes.co.za f @volpessa Hello Joburg • April 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

Running Bear SA is a huge success… what inspired it? I’ve always had an affinity for shoes and children, so this proved to be a perfect marriage of both! The brand was hugely inspired by my son Jayden. I struggled to find a shoe that was stylish, comfortable and functional while still benefiting his development. This resulted in the creation of Running Bear Moccasins. Tell us a few struggles you had starting the business? My struggle was narrowing down the range. I have so many inspirations and ideas, but I knew I needed to feel out the market first, and see the response. Also finding the right manufacturing partner and material proved challenging, as I wanted to ensure the quality and craftsmanship were exceptional. What have been the greatest rewards of running your own business? The greatest reward has definitely been the overwhelmingly positive response to the brand. Especially because Running Bear was my brainchild and passion. As a small business receiving acknowledgement and encouragement has been so gratifying. Has running your own business affected your role as a mother?

She may be the wife of local singer, Danny K, but Lisa is also a hard-working mum (and soon to be mum for the second time) and passionate businesswoman. She recently launched Running Bear - the cutest kiddie footwear line ever - and we got to pick her brain about it…

How does your second pregnancy compare to your first? Firstly, we don’t know the sex of the baby this time round, so that brings a whole other dimension of suspense into this pregnancy. The first three months of this pregnancy were challenging. I felt extremely nauseous and absolutely exhausted. Also the time has flown by - chasing a toddler around doesn’t give you much time to think about your pregnancy! 5 www.runningbear.co.za t @LGundel1 @lkopgun8

Luckily I can work from home which lets me be involved in Jayden’s day to day life. Being a working mom is always challenging, but creating balance through time management is key. I try and allocate certain times of the day to different aspects of my life so I don’t feel overwhelmed. I also always ask for help. Having support from people who you love and trust can be the greatest gift when you’re juggling work and kids.
