EDITOR'S

Note

W

ill you look at that? October – here already. We’re not ready yet! Slow down… stop this crazy carousel called life! I guess if you can’t stop it, then you might as well enjoy the ride, right Hello Pretorians? And what a ride it will be, if you page through this amazing issue and try out everything we suggest, of course.

Coffee addicts will be happy to hear that a brand new, caffeine-punting Starbucks branch will be opening its doors in Brooklyn Mall. Grabbing your morning cuppa and indulging in one of their many delectable baked treats just got a latte easier. But that’s not all… if you head over to our leisure activities section, you’ll find a list of mouth-watering cafes that you simply have to try. Answer me honestly, is there anything better than brunch? If you haven’t already guessed, I’m a little food obsessed at the moment, and when I discovered one of my favourite restaurants hidden in Menlyn Park, I was over the moon. If you haven’t dived into a bowl of pasta at Nonna’s Italian Food Bar, then you quite simply have not lived. The pasta is made fresh, daily, the pizzas are divine, and the cool canteentype vibe of the restaurant makes splitting the bill between mates an absolute breeze. What we love the most (besides stuffing our faces with focaccia and farfalle) is that there are little herb pots on each table. Need a hint of fresh basil? Pick away! Our nightlife section is a must-read. We’ve complied the ideal venues for the ultimate cocktail cruise through the Jacaranda City. From Guy Fieri to Champagne Gardens, cosmos and tequila shots, there’s enough here too get you started on what will probably be the most entertaining and sophisticated ‘bar hop’ you’ve been on in a while. xoxo

FOR GOODNESS Vovo Telo rises BAKES! to the occasion

A

ll you knead in the morning is bread - freshly baked bread, are we right? When we’re craving a particularly large load of carbs, we head on over to Vovo Telo Bakery & Cafe in Lynnwood, and stock up on warm loaves of Ciabatta, Sourdough, Rye, Brioche... drooling yet? The café menu is even better!

Words Victoria Taylor

This place has one of the best atmospheres we’ve come across in a cafe… it’s open, inviting and the décor is oh-so-cute and creative. Forget snooty – this spot has heart, and it's reflected in absolutely everything; from the smiles of the staff, to the aroma of freshly baked goods, right down to each and every item on the mouth-watering menu. The bakery section lures you in with tantalizing aromas of freshly baked breads, chocolate croissants, bagels, brownies, muffins and more – however, the menu is why you stay. We ordered the Three Little Pigs pizza; all melted cheesy goodness with both boerenkaas (a type of Gouda cheese) and coriander cream cheese, sprinkled with slow roasted BBQ pulled pork, marinated tomato and a handful of sesame seeds. Definitely not your regular pizza, but golly, was it delicious! You call it greedy, we call it hungry, because we also indulged in the

Pâté board – homemade chicken liver pâté served with warm, crusty slices of baguette and caramelised pears. That pâté… perfectly smooth. That bread – insanely delicious. Those pears? So tart, so juicy and a perfect complement to everything else on the plate. Vovo Telo caters for every palette, even the little ones. There’s a delightful children’s menu with Choc Chip Pancakes, Spag Bol, and even a Peanut Butter and Jam Bagel! How cute is that? For the bigger people, there are soups, salads, burgers, toasted sarmies, pasta’s, bagels… you name it, they probably have it. In addition to these delights, you can sip on wine, craft beers, champers and yum smoothies. Now Hello Pretorians, the Vovo Telo in Lynnwood has just been taken over by a new owner, and she has some seriously decadent treats planned for you guys, so keep your peepers peeled for exciting developments!

A REJUVENATED JEWEL in the heart of Hatfield

A

lready famous as the home of Papa’s restaurant, Duncan Yard is one of Pretoria’s most unusual and exhilarating shopping villages. It’s come full circle since 2000, as a favourite Hatfield haunt; to a victim of the recession of 2008 ...and back to being fully rejuvenated as Hatfield’s most vibrant and unique tourist landmark! Just a stone’s throw (you can literally walk there) from the Hatfield Gautrain, it’s a favourite with Jozi visitors and locals alike. Tourists from everywhere should include this in any visit to the Capital. Duncan Yard is quaint and colourful, serene and exuberant, vibrant and totally relaxing... it’s like stepping back in time, straight into a French village with narrow streets and nooks and crannies, where every personalised, owner-run business is unique and only found here. The contrasts are tangible as you encounter beautiful art works mingling with pop art, and antiques with modern, stunning jewellery pieces. Here designers

and a recording studio share the streets with confectioners, and a glass bead maker with a hair salon. Sights, sounds and smells intermingle in a delightful melting pot of tattoos and biltong, florists and gift shops, wedding gowns and high fashion. Ladies languish in a beauty salon, whilst men get a cut at a real barber with an authentic barber’s pole! Some dine in style and celebrate life at Papa’s, whilst others choose the outdoor ambience, home cooked confectionary and aromatic coffees served all day at the Deli on Duncan. Their babootie and lamb pies are famous!

A FEW SPECIAL PLACES TO VISIT… LE CHAT NOIR ANTIQUES This is also a a step back in time… many of the antiques on sale are the personal collection of proprietor and antique specialist, Carole Anne Nichols. Carole worked with Persian carpets and oriental rugs for 45 years, and these are a beautiful feature of the business. Serenely calm and delightfully old-world, one can browse and enjoy beautiful remnants of a time gone by.

The new collection from Bride&co is bringing sexy back… literally. It’s all about the back – straps, sultry crisscross elements, low-cuts and illusion mesh detailing. This collection was specifically designed with the modern bride in mind, and they have nailed it! This season is set to be one of the chicest yet! According to Bride&co, minimalism has made a comeback – think structured, strong lines, luxurious fabrics like duchess satin, mikado, crepe, and soft, sensual chiffon. If you’re a bride who adores modern trends, then you’ll love the ballgowns with daring necklines, the perfectly fitted mermaid gowns with low backs and the classic A-line gowns with charming little details like pockets and embellished necklines. Every woman deserves to feel – and look – like a princess on their big day, and you’re sure to find the perfect romantic dress at Bride&co. One that fits perfectly, and has intricate hand beading and lace, creating that dream-worthy fairy tale gown you’ve always wanted.

Words Victoria Taylor

There’s a reason that Bride&co is so popular. Since it opened in 2008, it has been the go-to, all-inclusive wedding and eveningwear store for women. The incredible stock is always bang on trend, thanks to their designer labels; Oleg Cassini, Viola Chan and their own in-house brand, the Bride&co Collection. What we love the most is that you can also hunt for the perfect pair of shoes, jewellery and a veil at this incredible spot. And of course, your bridesmaids – can’t forget about them! A REAL pizza work!

W

Penne for our thoughts?

e’ve never come across a pasta we didn’t like… and Nonna’s Italian Food Bar in Menlyn Park has every kind. Yes, you read that right – every kind of pasta, and it’s made fresh every day! If you’re already drooling, you may want to grab a napkin, because it gets molto meglio! ‘Nonna’ is the Italian word for grandmother, and the idea behind the food at this delicious spot was inspired by Nonna’s home cooking. It defines who they are - an authentic Italian food bar with a bit of a twist.

sourced from Brazil, Guatemala, Colombia, Costa Rica and Ethiopia. The beans are mixed until the ideal blend is created, and then roasted to perfection This little eatery has a clever smart-card payment system. You’re given a card when you arrive, and whatever you order is scanned into that card. When you’re done with your delicious meal, you head back to the front, swipe the card and pay your bill. Presto – easy peasy!

The food is absolutely delizioso – we are huge fans of their spaghetti bolognaise and we love building our own out-of-this worlds pizzas. We mentioned that the pasta is made fresh every day, but we’ve got to add that the chefs create all the dishes to order, right in front of the guests!

If there’s one thing you have to do, it’s try the ice cream rolls. Flash frozen ice cream is scraped off an ice-cold flat surface to create yum little rolls of creamy delight! You can also choose a variety of toppings to be crushed into your ice cream rolls, or sprinkled on top. It’s all just heavenly.

BETTER THAN BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S WHAT: Forget about hauling out pots and pans and trying to whip up brekkie for the whole family. We’ve found some seriously delightful spots to try…

JAM AND DAISIES:

Could it sound more delicious? From breakfast wraps and crumpets, to home-made sweetcorn bread, and pear and brie French Toast, we couldn’t think of a yummier way to start the day. 5 www.jamanddaisies.co.za

PURE CAFÉ:

This place has the most creatively named smoothies, like Monkey Punch (dried cranberry, pineapple and banana, sprinkled with toasted almonds), and Appelkoosdroom (dried apricot and orange juice with coconut milk and ginger). The Pure Café menu is full of weird and wonderful meals. Pizza Breakfast anyone? A Drowned Italian with a shot of espresso? Yum and fun! 5 wwww.purecafe.co.za

HARISSA BISTRO:

Looking to start the day with something seriously different? Forget cornflakes and fried eggs - we highly recommend the frittata of salmon, spring onion, camembert, lemon preserve and dill. This spot is known for its innovative menu, consistency and great service. It’s equally as good for lunch and dinner, if you feel like indulging for the whole day. 5 www.harissa.co.za

SWINGING AROUND WHAT: Take some time to enjoy the great outdoors. Available all over the country, this is a fun activity to do with friends or with the kids after a late lie-in and lekker breakie or brunch. Acrobranch is a treetop experience for kids and adults that creates a unique adventure as they move from tree to tree in lush, green forests. There are different obstacles and activities to choose from, like tree top high ropes and tricky crossings (with ladders, tunnels, walkways and bridges). There are also spectacular zip lines to top it off.

THE EVOLUTION OF

Park Acoustics For the love of live music!

L

ive music, sunshine and great company are a winning recipe for the perfect Sunday chill-out session, wouldn’t you agree? Take it outside to one of our city’s well-known heritage sites, add panoramic views of Gauteng basking in the sunlight, and you have Park Acoustics - the monthly live music affair that’s coveted across the country! There’s something about live local music that takes an event to the next level, and that’s what creators of Park Acoustics have appreciated. We have some of the most passionate performers in the world, and the high attendance at our festivals and local concerts is insurmountable proof. You’ve got to admit, taking live performances to Voortrekker Monument was a genius idea, and it makes the monthly concert unique.

Seasons have changed, the sun’s made us strip off our scarves and boots, and the city has a little more life. It’s the perfect excuse to the slap on some sunscreen and stomp the grounds of Voortrekker Monument. The line-up is always eclectic, alternative and worth the monthly wait. In fact, October’s lineup includes The Oh So Serious, Gerald Clark & Guy Colins, and the Tidal Waves. Taking place on 1 October, at the Voortrekker Monument (of course), you can expect to jive to the tunes of Wolfgang Marrow, Dan Patlansky and Searching Silence, featuring George Six and Soosh. Did we mention there’ll be comedy entertainment by Martin Jonas, Mum-Z and Warren Robertson? Tickets are available from R100 for students, or R120 online. You simply must experience it for yourself, so save the date at the end of every month. It’s an ideal way to ease out of the weekend with some of your mates! 5 www.parkacoustics.co.za T @ParkAcoustics @park_acoustics Hello Pretoria • October 2017 • Hellopretoria.co.za

Words Khanyi Mlaba Images Christelle Duvenhage Nanette Grebe

It all started eight years ago, in the vibrant surroundings of the Pretoria Botanical Gardens. An idea had sprouted in Niel Groenewald’s mind, for an outdoor music indulgence in celebration of live local sounds. Together with Henk van de Schyf and Willie van de Schyf, they created acoustic magic. Word got out (as it does), and the popularity of the event demanded a new venue. That’s right, the vast space in the botanical gardens was not enough for the fans of this new concert. Park Acoustics took a trek up to a new venue to accommodate the influx of excited concert-goers. To be quite honest, a lot of Pretorians may not have known how to get to the Voortrekker Monument, were it not for the echoes of Park Acoustics.

on the ultimate cocktail cruise!

e don’t know about you Hello Pretorians, but we’d rather be someone’s shot of whisky than everyone’s cup of tea. Put on your dancing shoes and your Friday night glad-rags, because it’s time to for some of the best cocktails in Pretoria.

The ‘cocktail cruise’ is akin to a pub crawl - only with more glitz and glam! When we went hunting for the perfect stops along our cruise, we started at Time Square in Menlyn Mine. Arriving in gleaming Ubers, we were looking forward to sniffing out the best cocktails in Pretoria.

WHAT’S A FRIDAY EVENING WITHOUT A SUNSET? First stop should be the Champagne Garden at Altitude - a sophisticated, Vegas-style rooftop venue, with breath-taking Gauteng views, and incredibly vibey music. Now, there’s an age-restriction of 23 after 5pm, but it’s there for a good reason. Gosh, does that place get pumping! You can go with the traditional; a trusty Manhattan, a bottle of Moet, or perhaps something more daring, like the Altitude Fuzz. Visual impact is important in a good cocktail venue, and Altitude scores very high in the presentation department.

NEXT STOP - THE CELEBRITY EATERY Something’s Cooking by J’Something is where you should kick off with the Mi Casa G&T; a zingy mix of Bulldog Gin, tonic, a rosemary twig and a rim laced with Pomegranate sugar. This is definitely not your garden variety G&T! We highly recommend you try the Japanese-style Sake Lemonade with fresh berries, the Pina Colada el Ramon, or the Smokey CocoNana - a Brazilian delight involving smoked coconut and dehydrated bananas. By now you’ll probably need some food to mop up that giggle-juice. Several dishes will do the trick, but the sticky chicken wings and J’s fried Mac ‘n Cheez come out on top. If your sugar levels aren’t already reaching diabetic levels, then the dessert menu, featuring a flourless chocolate cake and rich chocolate mousse, will have you reaching for the 911 button on your phone. 1 012 003 6156 f @somethingscookingbyj

KEEPING WITH THE VEGAS THEME Head to Guy Fieri’s Kitchen & Bar and order the Caliente Margarite. More commonly known as Guy’s World Famous Spicy Margarita, it’s made with with Jalapeno Infused el Jamidor, cilantro and homemade lime sour. No cocktail cruise is complete without a sampling of shots, beers and tequila cocktails. You can taste the Mexican madness in many forms, including the South Africa Iced Tea; a punchy fusion of Tanqueray Gin, Bacardi Light Rum, Ketel One Vodka, lime, lemon and cola. Be warned - these drinks kick like a rodeo pony! Now, it goes without saying that you’re going to have to Uber home, but not before you’ve tucked into Guy’s award-winning burger… smoked bacon, six-cheese mac ‘n cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle, cheddar, crispy onions and donkey sauce on a toasted brioche bun, served with cheddar 1 012 003 6175 | f @GuyFieri Hello Pretoria • October 2017 • Hellopretoria.co.za

travel PRETORIA’S

crown jewel! Luxury and tranquillity meets art

S

ynonymous with its purple carpets and deep blue skies, Pretoria is officially on the map. As true Joburgers, we love venturing out of our city and exploring the beloved 012, and what better way to do so than with the highly proclaimed Menlyn Boutique Hotel? Found in the centre of the city of Tshwane and surrounded by local restaurants and favoured shopping centres, it’s the ideal city escape. In fact, we think it’s the ultimate staycation! You cannot live in Pretoria and not visit this exquisite hotel - whether it be for an unforgettable dining experience at the Black Bamboo restaurant, or a sleepover… we highly recommend both.

26

Upon entering the gates, you’ll have one question in mind - is this paradise? Serene and luxurious, with unbridled tranquillity, it’s an impressive start. Contemporary in design and ultra chic, the twentyseven rooms are intimate yet spacious, open and uncluttered and are filled with décor spoils. There are eight executive suites, ten standard rooms and Hello Pretoria • October 2017 • Hellopretoria.co.za

one stunning presidential suite. There are also two self-catering units, as well as six express (standard) rooms. Each room boasts LCD and plasma TV sets, air conditioning, a desk and excellent Wi-Fi access. You can definitely work from your room - with a glass of Pinot Noir in hand, of course! What sets this hotel apart is the glorious art pieces, which you’ll stumble upon in every distant corner. It’s a five-star hotel with the added bonus of an art exhibition, and a world-class destination for locals and internationals. It’s the perfect balance between luxury and comfort, its symmetry in design and service offering is top-notch, and you’ll be made to feel special without even noticing it. This is no truer than at the spa… definitely a ten out of ten spa experience. We recommend the foot massage, followed by a full body massage. Be warned, once the unwind bug has bitten, there’s no turning back.

The Black Bamboo restaurant is also reason enough to visit. Run by celebrated head chef Pellie Grobler, the food is a magical culinary carpet ride where you’ll be transfixed by original South African flavors, and mesmerized by the aesthetic of each plate. Think gorgeous lobster ravioli to start, followed by poached angelfish with artichoke puree. Finish off with a seductive poached peach and lavender tuile. They also embrace a stunning selection of fine wines, from a youthful Dark Lady, to a honeyed Almenkerk Chardonnay. Simply put, it’s culinary perfection and we’re rather glad it’s only a 40-minute drive away, or else we’d be here every second evening! esut Barazany once said “your future depends on your dreams. So, go to sleep!” We love a good snooze, but how much is enough? Sleep expert and Founder of the Hall Collection, Debbie Reinders Hall gives us some useful advice on how to perfect our sleeping habits…

HOW MANY HOURS? We all love a lie-in, but research shows too much sleep can lead to cognitive impairment, depression, increased inflammation and pain, as well as impaired fertility and it increases your risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. This must be why the early bird gets the worm! According to the National Sleep Foundation, newborns (0-3 months) should sleep for 14 to 17 house a day, toddlers (1 to 2 years) need 11 to 14 hours, while preschoolers (3 to 5 years) need at least 10 to 13 hours. Children between the ages of 6 to 13 years need 10 to 13 hours sleep, while teenagers (14 to 17 years) require only 8 to 10 hours. Those between 18 and 64 years only need 7 to 9 hours sleep. HOW TO GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP ... Find your balance: We don’t all need 8 hours of sleep a night. Work out the level you need. Keep a routine: Going to bed at the same time each night will program your body for sleep. Invest in a good bed: A comfy bed will provide deep, reviving sleep.

Give yourself space: Buy the biggest bed your room can accommodate, so you can luxuriate in an undisturbed nights rest. Be active and engaged: Physical and mental exercise will help you sleep better. Ease down: Too much stimulation before bed can stop you sleeping. A relaxed body and mind will prepare you for sleep. Find a bedtime routine that helps you to unwind easily. Create the right environment: Darkness, quietness and the ideal temperature helps you fall and stay asleep Avoid: working on iPads and computers and eating heavy meals before bed. FIVE TIPS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A BED Talk to a specialist! Take the time to find learn more about various options and what would be best for you. Choose a bed that’s right for your size; height, weight and shape. Test beds to find the one that is most comfortable for your body. Choose the biggest bed possible; Give yourself as much room as possible. More space will let you move freely. Choose the right length Choose natural fibers; make sure that the process of manufacturing is chemical free.

7 MINUTES WITH

Janie Bay

She may have been born in Cape Town but this incredible singer now calls Pretoria home. Janie’s recorded and performed with some of the hottest local talent (including Jack Parow, Matthew Mole, Die Heuwels Fantasies and more!), and now she’s set to launch her major debut album, Miscellany. but I wanted to produce each song on the album in its own way. I hope there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

If you hadn’t become a singer, what career would you have chosen? Probably the health & fitness industry. Most likely personal training.

Who’s your greatest musical inspiration? There are a few, it's hard to choose! Elton John, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Alanis Morrisette, John Mayer and James Bay, to name a few.

Tell us about your new album… 'Miscellany' is a mix of sounds, feelings and emotions - hence the name. I write about different experiences and topics all the time. I am a singer-songwriter at the core,

What inspires your music? Mostly my own experiences or that of others. Whatever touches my heart, or makes me happy or hurt.

What can’t you leave your house without? Probably my cellphone. My family is very protective and if I leave it at home and they can't reach me, they flip out!

WIN!

We know you want to get your hands on a copy of Janie Bay’s new album, Miscellany. All you have to do is SMS your name, email address and the word ‘Miscellany’ to 30131 to enter Competition ends 31 October. Standard SMS rates apply.

Favourite place to eat? I have two. Grounded @ Echo is a lovely coffee shop in Villieria, and they do some great work there for the homeless. For dinner, I love Crawdaddy's. They're always consistent and they have a very good variety of food. Red wine or white? I love both - even though I’m not drinking at the moment. What are you listening to in your car right now? The last album I listened to was 'We Move' by James Vincent McMorrow. 5 www.janiebay.com f @JanieBay T @JanieBay @janiebay

Words Victoria Taylor

How’d you break into show business? I’ve been singing and writing from a young age. Seven years ago, I started opening for bigger acts like aKING and Francois van Coke in Cape Town, and things just progressed from there. I’ve been gigging extensively since then.
