Hello Pretoria! It’s July and if you haven’t noticed, winter is officially here. It’s also just downhill (or uphill?) from here until the end of the year, so brace yourselves! Just the other day, as I was driving down Justice Mahomed Street on my way back from a fancy, schmancy Cap Classique event hosted by Graham Beck at Geet Indian Restaurant, the unsettling sight of a poor man sitting on the corner, trying to cover his feet with a torn blanket caught my eye. As I drove past, there were so many thoughts rushing through my mind. “How can I help?” “But, it’s not safe.” “He looks so sad and alone.” “Why can I sleep in a warm bed tonight and he’s got nowhere to go?” That made me realise that I don’t even know where the nearest homeless shelter or soup kitchen is, and I think that – in addition to partaking in plastic-free July – I might start educating myself on how and where to help this month. We’ve dedicated our July issue to some of the great causes in Pretoria in the spirit of Mandela Day happening on 18 July, not only to give thanks, but also to show you how and where you can get involved to heat up some hands and hearts this winter. We also have some exciting leisure and travel content for you this month, including an exclusive leisure activity feature focusing on where we - the city dwellers - can and should escape to over weekends, as well as a fun outing with Yamaha. We also share some insights on the best theatre shows for kids in July and suggest a few travel destinations that are ideal to visit when your monter-in-law has to tag along. Our July issue is also filled with hearty and spicy winter dining options – from The Hussar Grill’s famous meat dishes to some really impressive, spicy dishes and warm atmospheres displayed in our Spice up your winter photo spread. The Royal India also adds some spice to our winter with wonderful conferencing options at the Cherry Lane Shopping Centre. Last, but not least: Don’t forget about our 10 Days of Giveaways in July! We’ll be running these competitions on our website and on social media, so go right ahead and follow us online that you can stay in the loop. You can look forward to prizes like a hamper from Graham Beck, dining vouchers from Kream Restaurant and more. Enjoy the read, HP!

WIMPY PRESERVES THE PLANET According to a study done in the UN, microplastics in our oceans now outnumber the stars in our galaxy, which is quite a scary statistic. Wimpy, a brand centred around moments shared among families, has rolled out paper straws in July 2018 already and did away with plastic straws across all its restaurants countrywide. They have relooked their current batch of straws in order to give customers a better experience when they are using it. Read more about it online.

HEAT UP HANDS & HEARTS Kill the Winter Chill with Good Deeds

As temperatures drop, we often tend to retreat to where we are most comfortable – physically and emotionally. We’d like to challenge you to get out and make a difference in July.

F

or many, winter is a matter of survival whether it’s about the physical challenges like the basics of food and a place to stay or emotional challenges we face due to hardships we face. One thing that we have realised is that we all live in our own little boxes – isolated from the outside world - and we forget that there are other people around us who are struggling with exactly the same issues or worse. Staying in your own bubble this winter is not going to warm any hands or hearts.

No one has ever become poor by giving. With it being Mandela Day on the 18th of July, but also with it being a wintery month filled with physical and emotional challenges, we’d like to see Pretoria come together as a community and step up to the challenge of helping each other and being there for one another. Even the smallest gestures often make a big difference. There are so many options out there when it comes to volunteering and helping others. Volunteering is not limited to the preservation and conservation of South Africa’s wildlife, it is also much needed in children’s homes, at animal rescue centres, in old age homes and on our streets.

PEN serves the community under a number of themes, one of them being Community Support and Citizen’s Rights. Their objective with this is to provide access to the basic needs of vulnerable children, adults and elderly in the Tshwane community in the form of emergency shelter, clothing, food and access to sanitation. Through this program, they guide the people they serve to get a clear understanding of their basic human rights, to have access to services they are entitled to (like identity documents, healthcare and grants) and they also take an advocacy role for communities whose rights have been abused. 1 www.pen.org.za Khuluma Family Counselling Emotional and social health is every person’s right and even though we can’t necessarily see the scars of emotional damage, it’s just as important to attend to as physical scars. Khuluma Family Counselling offers a broad spectrum of psycho-social support services to people from all walks of life and have touched over 8000 people’s lives in the bigger Tshwane community. Their projects include victim empowerment, family counselling and children and adult play therapy. 1 www.khulumafamily.org.za Kungwini Welfare Ogranisation This organisation manages the Paul Jungnickel Home (a home for adults with disabilities), the Kungwini Children’s Home, the Kungwini Early Learning Centres as well as community development projects and social work services. The Character Company This initiative’s goal is to help to change the culture of violence and abuse by helping boys to grow into good men by instilling honourable values in them. The Character Company is active in Pretoria and Johannesburg and through weekly afternoon activities, monthly camps and other events and fundraisers they get to touch the lives of boys who don’t necessarily have a role model to look up to. They help single mothers and the community to raise good men through a MENtorship program, positively impacting families and society. 1 www.thecharactercompany.co.za Wollies Animal Shelter If your heart lies with our furry friends, there is ample ways to get involved in the feeding, sheltering and loving of Pretoria’s animals too. What started out as a sterilisation project, grew into a full-scale shelter for animals where they are well looked after, fed and loved by volunteers from all over. There are numerous ways in which you can get involved to help a dog or a cat, whether it’s by being a sponsor, a volunteer or adopting one of these little furballs. Wollies also makes an effort to create awareness when it comes to topics like pet theft. 1 www.wollies.org We pass people (and animals) on the streets on a daily basis who often haven’t had anything to eat for days. In the evenings many of them have nowhere to go, with the bare minimum on their backs; toes sticking through the front of their shoes. Winter is no joke for many people and the scary part is that we often think we live in different worlds while we actually live among each other - we just choose not to see it. Let’s make July the start of something good – helping others through the chill of winter, whether it’s a physical winter challenge where they just have no home, food or warm blankets or whether it’s a wintery season emotionally.

Let’s do some good. Hello Pretoria • July 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

THE WONDERS OF WINTER Get off the couch and out and about

Winter comes with many excuses as to why you’d rather stay indoors, but Pretoria’s weather is really something this time of year and we say: Use it!

It’s a brew thing Pretoria’s culinary and coffee industries are booming and there’s no way of knowing where it will end. Many a bro would love to have their own coffee brand, which is why the coffee brewing trend has become such a hype in Pretoria. +27 Café ranks quite high when it comes to coffee in Pretoria, so next time when you hop off the Gautrain in Hatfield, be sure to pop in for a cuppa. Of course, Seattle Coffee Co is a no brainer, with some really creative and delicious coffees to choose from at their Menlyn and Brooklyn shops. They also have a relatively new shop at Queenswood Quarter, so swing by when you’re in the area. Spout Coffee at The Village is another favourite that cannot be missed this winter and if you’re keen on getting out of the city, try out a proper Boeretroos at Jasmyn in Hartebeespoort – coffee with condensed milk that comes in a tin cup with a delicious, freshly baked rusk.

Hello Pretoria • July 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

Trails to tackle It is so easy to fall into the trap of cuddling on the couch in stead of getting active and staying fit during the winter months. Pretoria has countless options when it comes to staying fit – all you need to do is get off the couch. Groenkloof Nature Reserve is one of the favourite trails when it comes to mountain biking and another more recent favourite is Wolwespruit, which is also pet-friendly and has its own on-site restaurant with a kiddies’ play area (and good coffee too). Both these parks are open to hikers and bikers. Further out is Rosemary Hill, another beautiful mountain biking trail and The Big Red Barn which has a cycle park and mountain bike trails for the whole family. Staying active in the winter months is probably one of the hardest things to do – a lifestyle decision one needs to take very seriously. Staying indoors for too long may even lead to feelings of depression and rejection, which can snowball into a whole lot of other nasty things. We are so lucky to have weather that lures us outdoors. Can you even imagine having to go out to the park while the city is covered in kneedeep snow? Take advantage of Pretoria’s lovely weather this winter and let’s stay healthy and fit all year round.

P

retoria’s summer months could become unbearably hot, which makes a swimming pool and cocktails a must. Winter, however, is often more bearable with rather mild days that boast many opportunities for roaming the city, finding the best coffee spots, the best hiking trails and other outdoorsy activities.

or someone who likes to explore their own city, Nieuw Muckleneuk is not a bad place to start. From the ever so popular Brooklyn Mall to the Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary and loads of well-known, but also lesser-known restaurants and coffee shops. Explore the outdoors Officially proclaimed a nature reserve in 1985, the Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary is fed by two streams – the Walker and the Argo – feeding water into wetland basins that attract water birds like Egyptian Geese, whitebreasted cormorant and hadeda ibis. Other species that can be seen at this lovely bird sanctuary are the blue crane (our national bird) and the crowned crane. The sanctuary boasts a bird hide from where you can enjoy some bird watching. Guided walks can also be arranged at a mere R55 per person and there is even an exhibition hall for those who would like to know more about the species in the park. The Blue Crane Restaurant is situated adjacent this sanctuary and boasts a lovely,

exclusive bird hide venue where guests can host private celebrations and functions. 1 www.tshwane.gov.za 1 www.bluecranerestaurant.co.za/birdhide Shop ’til you drop It feels like Brooklyn Mall has been around since Pretoria’s early days and still it is one of the favourite shopping spots when you speak to locals. Adjacent to the mall is the popular Design Square, which boasts numerous restaurants, a kiddies’ play area and some impressive interior shops. 1 www.brooklynmall.co.za Let’s eat cake! Jam and Daisies is a quirky, contemporary coffee house in Lange Street with a cosy fireplace ideal for a relaxing morning among friends. This is where you need to go if you’re in the mood for indulging. They serve a variety of warm indulgence, including a Bar One Latte. Not to mention the dessert coffees.

For a more sophisticated celebration, they also offer some bubblies, wine and beers and if you’re keen, you can even order an anytime high tea, which then consists of a glass of bubbly, a quiche tart, a slice of cake and a pot of tea or a cup of coffee. It’s not only the cakes and coffee that lures you here, though. Their menu is filled with deliciousness - from indulgent French toast and delectable Belgian waffles to gourmet platters, tortilla pizzas and hearty meals. 1 www.jamanddaisies.co.za Crème de la Kream If you’re looking for a fine dining experience coupled with art, Kream Restaurant might be the way to go. shopping come up with a few tips on how to shop for your winter closet when you live in Pretoria. The best solution: Layering. t n a r u a t s e R THE MONTH OF

THE HUSSAR GRILL A recipe for success

Although they are not necessarily new to Pretoria, The Hussar Grill at The Grove Mall has got many surprises up its sleeve.

Says the owner Owner, Peet Badenhorst says: “We use the strong base of quality that is The Hussar Grill Brand and build on that with unique Pretoria flair. We have unique wine pairings and events, our own signature dishes and wines that differ from the other Hussars and have customers returning for them.

Being able to help create special memories is what really makes [being a restaurateur] special for me. Seeing a family enjoying quality time together or a couple enjoying a Hello Pretoria • July 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

romantic evening makes me smile. Knowing we contributed in a small way to these special memories that people treasure is my true joy.” What to eat Of course, we first polished the delectable welcome snacks, consisting of biltong, olives and sweet potato chips. Be careful, though, as you would want to leave space for the rest! The award-winning menu is filled with mouthwatering beef, game and venison options, but also a wide selection of poultry, seafood and salads. We went with the classic Chateaubriand (a fillet topped with brandy and flambéed, served with a Béarnaise sauce on the side) and the popular Hussar Carpetbagger (a fillet mignon stuffed with a combination of smoked oysters and cheddar cheese, topped off with a brandy and wholegrain mustard sauce). At The Hussar Grill, it is almost impossible to leave without spoiling yourself to some dessert too. Their baked cheesecake caught our fancy. That and the Hussar Grill Ice Cream Dessert

– a combination of vanilla ice cream, peanut brittle, marshmallow, nougat, honeycomb and sprinkled nuts. Indulge much? This might be your next stop then. To top it all off One of the special surprises that The Hussar Grill is famous for is their Chocolate Vodka Martini – a post-dinner tradition like no other. You can try and test as much as you like – this recipe will stay an in-house secret for centuries to come, as well as an after-dinner treat that no one could say no to. 1 www.hussargrill.co.za A new venture that has taken flight at The Hussar Grill The Grove is their exclusive food and wine pairing evenings in collaboration with some of the Cape’s finest wine farms. Their Rietvallei Meal Pairing (which runs until the end of July) consists of a set menu priced at R300 per person. Not a bad idea for date night.

The old-world interior of books and bottles speak of evening-long conversations between loved ones and friends. It’s true to its origins – a Rondebosch restaurant gone North. A cosy fire chatters away as guests start to arrive for an evening of quality time, conversation and food and judging from the welcoming snacks on the table, the evening couldn’t have started on a higher note.

CHEFS AND THEIR SPICES The real deal

If you’re looking for a real authentic treat when it comes to Indian cuisine, The Raj has got it all – from the spices to real-deal-chefs.

T

Words Renate Engelbrecht Image Supplied

he Raj’s secret seems to be exactly that: Authenticity. They have brought in chefs straight from India who cook to their hearts’ content and grace their guests with some of the best Indian cuisine you’ll be able to find in Pretoria. Even the waiter, Lewis, becomes more authentic by the day, adopting an Indian name to introduce himself. Rakesh (Lewis’ Indian name) means lord of the full moon and at The Raj he might not be lord of the full moon, but he definitely rules the floor with his humorous sayings and brilliant service. Between the hustle and bustle of Time Square Casino’s slot machines and neon lights, entering The Raj has a tranquil and calming effect on the senses. For a total newby to Indian cuisine, this is quite the treat with starters of all sorts, from chili poppers to differently prepared lamb kebabs – all with a bit of a bite, which is perfect for these chilly winter evenings. The Raj even caters for you when you prefer staying at home. All you need to do is purchase some of their authentic Indian cook in sauces to prepare your own Indian dishes in the comfort of your home. You can even get the chefs’ videos for the specific sauce by scanning the QR code on the package! They’ve launched three flavours that are popular around the globe: Rojan Josh, Butter Chicken and Korma.

ADVERTORIAL

What makes The Raj so unique? Importing their master chefs from India would be our first bet. They bring with them about seven different generations of Indian culinary knowledge and Indian traditions – something to be very proud of. For us, Indian cuisine goes hand in hand with intense flavours, spices and colour. Spices are undoubtedly the essence of this cuisine and every plate is colourful in its own sense. Somehow – even though on African soil – The Raj brings all of this and more to the table. Their chefs’ talents are reflected in the robust aromas, popping, warm colours and the evocative flavours of their brilliant masalas. A lot of effort goes into garnishing as well. Garnishes are artistically and delicately cut – an age-old skill that has been passed down for centuries. Let The Raj’s chefs take you on an Indian journey with their delicious Rogni Naan, Lamb Rojan Josh, Bombay Aloo and Kulfi. 1 www.therajrestaurant.com

What many guests don’t know is that The Raj at Time Square Casino serves cocktails at half price and snack baskets (including samosas, pakoras, Tandoori chicken wings and kebabs) on their balcony between 3PM and 6PM. EXPLORING

PRETORIA’S BACKROADS WITH YAMAHA

22

amaha has recently launched a new dealership in Pretoria East and it’s an absolute haven for bikers and boaters. In fact, getting to experience Pretoria from inside their Kymco UXV700 alongside the Yamaha YZ450F, might just have converted us into hardcore Yamaha and Kymco fans.

Did you know? In addition to its wide range of boats, bikes and musical instruments, Yamaha also sells household generators of up to 10 000 kva, as well as generator-welder combos.

Located opposite Wilgers Hospital and The Grove Mall, the dealership is conveniently located and close to the N4 highway. They boast an array of Yamaha and Kymco products from PW50s and Yamaha and Kymco scooters to 1000CC R1s. They also have boats and jet skis with all the required equipment that come with it, as well as secure boat storage facilities and a fully-fledged marine workshop. The dealership’s VR46 concept store is for all the Rossi fans out there. It is filled with riding gear for both on-road and off-road motorbike junkies with the biggest range of Shoei helmets in the whole of South Africa.

The Kymco UXV700’s two-wheel-drive to four-wheel-drive activation and independent dual A-arm front and rear suspension made it a comfortable, yet exciting off-road ride to Rosemary Hill where we were treated to a warm cup of cappuccino coupled with delicious brownies that we’ll return for time and again. Even though the Kymco UXV700 was mainly created to work on farms, you’ve got to make some time for play too! Effortlessly reaching a speed of up to 85km per hour and holding its grip on loose sand and on bumpy roads, it’s a safe and fun vehicle to use for both work and play.

Hello Pretoria • July 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

Kicking up some dust on route, the Yamaha YZ450F is clearly the rebel on the road. This is the dirt bike you’d want for Christmas if you could have it – one to spend a day at Rhino Park’s international MX track on, flying over bumps and sliding around bends. It has some of the best suspension out there and works for both novices, as well as pro riders. While entering the Yamaha dealership after a fun morning on Pretoria’s backroads, we were reminded of the fact that Yamaha is not only about boats and bikes. They are also about music. It was therefore quite appropriate for the shiny, white, Yamaha grand piano on the floor to play us out. A musical end to a magical morning of pumping adrenaline and unmeasurable relaxation. Yamaha’s Pretoria East dealership is planning a whole lot of exciting customer open days, events and test rides, so stay tuned. The 2020 Yamaha range will also be coming in later this year, which means there’s a lot to look forward to. 1 www.yamaha.co.za

IN THE SKY Seeing something from the top is always a great experience and it’s nothing less than spectacular with Harties’ Aerial Cableway that lures people from afar. The original cableway was constructed in 1973, using materials supplied by the Swiss manufacturer, GMD Müller. Today there are fourteen high-tech cable cars

carrying six passengers at a time, spoiling visitors with a bird’s eye view of Hartbeespoort Dam and its surrounds. Harties Cableway also offers adrenaline junkies the opportunity to ride up with the cableway and make use of the ramp at the top of the mountain to launch themselves into the air and paraglide their way down again. There is an adventure booking centre where special tickets can be bought for this. You can also book other activities at the centre, including mountain biking and ziplining. AROUND THE TABLE With Harties being such a drawcard for city dwellers, it obviously also has to cater to their visitors’ (and the locals’) culinary needs. They sure cater for a broad spectrum with a whole range of dining options to choose from. Restaurant Mosaic might be a short drive out, but with award-winning chef, Chantel Dartnall at the steer you will absolutely hit the jackpot with this dining experience. Her dishes are colourful and creative and it is the perfect finedining experience for anyone with a passion for cuisine. Another more informal option is De Vette Mossel - a unique experience with some of the best homemade breads and seafood. The Silver Orange Bistro is situated on a citrus orchard called Altyd Mooi and Executive Chef, Leon Nel serves flavourful European dishes with an African flair. Also don’t forget about Pretville for the best milkshakes in town and French Toast Coffee Café where you can enjoy a variety of French-themed treats.

nightlife

NIGHTLIFE LUSTING

What people today really want from a night out on the town As per definition, a bar, pub, saloon or tavern (if you’d like to travel back in time) is defined as an establishment that serves alcohol. Well, that was then…

T

Words: Carly Ritz Images: Supplied

oday’s customer is much more bougie - looking for a lot more than just lukewarm beer complemented with some stale peanuts and biltong on a sticky bar counter. Here are some of the trends that might appeal to an audience looking for some nightlife inspiration when the sun sets in P-town:

Live Large with all the extras After a long, full week at work or even just a bad day, you want to unwind and enjoy the finer things. If and when you go out these days, it really has to count. No one has time to waste. A trend that keeps on giving, is the bar that is just so much more than a bar. People want an experience, something worth tweeting about or sharing on Instagram. Something exciting and something that will make their friends wish they were there. The fancier and more luxurious, the better!

Spoiled for choice People are picky. We know this. If your bar serves the average SAB variety and that’s that, then you are certainly missing something. For those plucking up the energy to go out in winter and spend their hard-earned money, there has to be something a little more appealing than a generic lager to keep the place hopping. Today, imported and craft beers have become the standard to live up to and the more products you have with names that no one knows, the better!

Try this: Restaurant Mosaic at The Orient offers a non-alcoholic drink pairing to complement the food offering. Or this: Salsa Mexican Grill at Loftus Park makes a great gin mocktail.

Try This: The Globe Bar is really something to write home about. This establishment combines experimental mixology and molecular gastronomy in a gorgeous venue. With premium spirits on the menu to limited Cuban cigars, here’s a spot to turn up the heat. Or this: Culture Club – Bar de Tapas for ridiculously yum tapas while you are tippling.

Try This: Capital Craft in Menlo Park and Centurion specialises in serving the best craft beers that South Africa has to offer, together with quality cuisine. Or this: Carbon Bistro serves the biggest variety of gin in Gauteng with over 200 different types of craft gin from 34 different countries.

Rise of the Mocktail Once something that was added to the menu to appease the teetotaler, the alcoholfree cocktail is not something to joke about anymore. With the rise of conscious living and wellness trends comes the need for evening establishments to invest in some good mocktail options and cater for a growing audience. It is perhaps counter-intuitive when on the topic of nightlife, but more and more people are going out and drinking lightly or avoiding hard tack all together – whether it’s for health reasons or to stay safe on the roads.

A ROYAL TIME at The Royal India

There's a new kid on the block and if you're looking for a venue to host a couple of guests, to celebrate life or to have your year-end function at, The Royal India is it.

I

t has been a 6-year-long dream to broaden The Royal India’s playfield into the streets of Brooklyn. Open since 2 April, they've become part of the Cherry Lane Shopping Centre's tenant mix, adding some royal Indian flair to the old East.

Words: Renate Engelbrecht Images: Supplied

Their brand-loyal colours of maroon, royal blue and gold draw you in and the spicy whiffs of cloves and coriander make you feel warm inside even before you have tasted their butter chicken, lamb rogan josh or biryani. The interior is unique with Sheesham wood furniture that has been imported from India, colourful Indian-themed photographs on the walls and an unexpected splash of neon lights hanging from the ceiling. A conference at The Royal India can only be a magical, authentic, Indian experience. From the food to the facilities, they seem to have all their ducks in a row. They have catered for a number of Indian tour groups before and are affiliated with about thirty odd travel companies worldwide, religiously supporting the tourism industry. The specs The Royal India has free wifi and television screens are available for presentations or marketing purposes. If the venue is booked for your event exclusively, it can effortlessly host up to 200 people. They also have a separate conferencing option where they can easily fit in up to 40 pax. They are equipped with all the necessary sound equipment, allowing you to bring in your own entertainment when you book the venue for an event.

The cuisine The restaurant serves North Indian cuisine - a cuisine where it's not about how hot it is, but rather how flavourful. The spices they use are all imported from India, making their dishes unique and out of this world. With Executive Chef, Bhagat Singh Batola’s 15 years of experience - Indian cuisine bred into him from a very young age - the catering at your event can only be superb. The Royal India is very flexible when it comes to catering requirements too, tailoring the menu according to your budget and your needs - be it a limited budget or dietary requirements. Libation They boast a large luxury lounge where guests can enjoy a conservative cup of masala tea, a more daring Madras Mojito or a draught beer from the fully licenced cocktail bar. They serve a number of Indian-themed cocktails, a good cuppa and other alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Entertainment The Royal India is also planning to bring in some entertainment in the form of live Indian classical music nights and even some belly dancers in the not too far future, which can only add to your experience at this unique restaurant. Like the owner and CEO, Jagjit Singh rightly says: "The Royal India is all about the experience.” Hello Pretoria • July 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

NORDIC NUANCES The Top 5 Hottest Winter Décor Trends

It seems that as technology booms, people start retreating to the more natural things – be it on their plates or in their homes.

T

he latest décor trends seem to lean towards a Nordic-inspired retreat style – surrounding yourself with natural finishes. This includes tactile surfaces, lighting with natural elements and earthy, warm, neutral tones. Alon Sachs, co-founder of Mobelli Furniture and Living says that décor designs are now including materials that engage the senses. Bringing the outdoors into your home through the use of earthy tones, neutrals and wood furnishings is the way to go and these beautiful colours and materials are, according to Sachs, easy to build on to create stunning spaces. “As our screen time increases, this trend is a great way to create tactile, natural experiences in your home. The materials featuring prominently under this trend are great for the everyday modern family,” he says. 1 www.mobelli.co.za

1 Words: Renate Engelbrecht Images: Supplied

Incorporate modern credenzas with tactile surfaces, scatter cushions, textured vases, woven rugs and natural, textured pendant lights. Add this: Mobelli’s Medanos Charcoal Indoor Rug (from R7 999) or Hertex Coco Jute Woven Rug (R5 500). Their Ellington Credenza (R15 195) will work well with it too.

2

Bring in plants for a fresh look. It gives life and adds natural colour to a space. Add this: 53cm Aloe by Silk Creations (R782)

3

1

Choose colours and textures that will fit in with the rest of the space in order to create a sense of harmony throughout. Mix patterns – just be sure to repeat them to create an even flow. Add this: A bold blue accent colour like a glass vase with a golden base from Zara (R799) or a blue organic blown glass vase from @Home (R399) in an otherwise monochromatic space is a trend in Nordic design. You can also try the Wooden Base Tea Light Holder from Mobelli (R1 040).

2

4

Keep it clean and without clutter (which is one of the main themes of the Nordic décor trend) by only choosing pieces that you love and that would complement the items currently in your home. Add this: This Weylandts Tuareg Bookcase is made of mixed woods and will complement any space (R7 995). Lagom means finding just the right amount. This approach to life can be incorporated into your home too by adding not too little, but also not too much. Just the right amount.

5

Look for good quality wood and workmanship when you decide to invest in wooden furniture that will look beautiful and add character to your home.

3

Add this: Couch Nkwana by Homewood, situated at Lynnwood Bridge. (R 22 154). Add some wood elsewhere with Mobelli’s Levels Floor Lamp (R1 999). Hello Pretoria • July 2019 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

LEON GROPP

If you’ve never met a Jack of all trades, meet Mr. Gropp. He’s a songwriter, a brilliant guitar player, has a next-level singing voice and he is a presenter on kykNET’s Ontbytsake. He is also busy building a recording studio with one of his mates and he is writing a musical with another mate and in between he is husband and dad. So, what’s new? “I am actually busy with my new album. I must release a new album in this year as it’s been a while after the release of Rooidag. What makes this special is that it will be a full album from my own pen – all the songs will be my own. I think I have a lot to say, so I owe it to myself. Other than that I am also busy with Discover Your Music in collaboration with Jaco Boëttger and Musiek soos Grond is also another thing that’s keeping me busy.” Tell us more about Ontbytsake? “It’s a whole other world for me. I have been with them for about nine months now and except for the whole new world and that it was something to get used to, I get to meet the most interesting people. It is something that I hope will cross my path more often in future – to work in television. I enjoy television a lot. I’m not an actor, but I like presenting and I like to have intellectual conversations with people. It’s not just fun, it’s also very stimulating.” How do you ever relax? “I lie down.” [Giggles!]

What is your new album’s focus? “My typical style is quite abstract and I like to leave it open for interpretation. I have included a song that I wrote for Martelize (my wife) which I started writing when we went away together for the first time. There is also a song which people can relate to that I wrote for my daughter. One of the deeper meanings behind it is that you only have now. Aside from that I also wrote a song, Wolkedans, based on a book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, called Pioniers van die Wolke. The song’s theme is that you may not bury the poet or artist within you…Art is a place of honesty and we often choose to hide it. I am quietly excited about the album.” 1 www.leongropp.com

“I enjoy exercising and jogging. I also like taking small breakaways – that is quite important to me. Especially exposing my little ones to the peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle. I want to break away as much as possible – even if it’s just for two or three days. It keeps me sane. I am not really a city guy.”
