This is the scenario we had in mind when we started planning this issue. Of course, most of our readers don’t live in Hyde Park, but wherever they are, there’s a good chance the days are getting longer and hotter, activities are heading outdoors, and the pace is slowing down at least a little bit ... even for the Hello Joburg team. So, let’s lighten up, we thought. Give our readers a magazine to flip through while sitting on the porch after dinner, or to roll up and stuff in their hand luggage. A #HelloToDoList! We thought. We’ll gather a selection of the best places that have opened in Jozi this year. Travel! We’ll carry our readers to the exotic destination of Mauritius. Jacarandas! We’ll point them to neighbourhoods and streets boasting a lavender haze – what could be more delightful? Our Restaurant of the Month is Winner Winner Jozi, an American-style diner that’s opened where Perron in Melville used to be. The Negroni Sorbet topped with MCC is enough reason to go check it out … you can take my word for it. Chef Matthew Foxon is our Chef of the Month, who heads up the kitchen at what’s easily one of my favourite restaurants in Joburg, Level Four at 54 on Bath. He talks to us about the fine dining restaurant’s new wine pairing dinners and chef ’s table experiences. Everyone deserves to treat themselves for making it to this point in the year in one piece, which is why we’ve rounded up the most indulgent, extra special beauty and wellness treatments. If you only book one of them, let it be YouBar’s Africology mani-pedi – there’s a reason this is a monthly indulgence for me. This month we also visited some fab hotspots, including GlamLash Lash Studio and Vanilla Nails, and our beauty editor tried and tested the best sunscreens money can buy. These are just some of the must-reads in our November issue. Even more than we love dining out, beauty products and travelling, we relish hearing from our readers. So, we’d love to know what you think of it at info@ hellojoburg.co.za. Hello, November … surprise us!

ere in Hyde Park, as I write this editor’s letter with my cup of rose petal and vanilla tea in hand, we’re enjoying a comfortable 18-degree morning. No one is really complaining about the cloudy skies or the slight chance of rain. Soon enough – next week, according to my iPhone’s weather app – temperatures will begin their inevitable climb into the upper 20s, then (help us) probably the mid 30s. Add that to our infamous humidity, a rainstorm or two and ahhh … it’s November in the City of Gold.

08h00 I wake up early, make a ginger tea, turn on the infrared sauna and get the most ‘adminny’ parts of my day done, such as responding to emails and checking the calendar for the day’s events. 09h30 Time for a morning session! I head into the studio and get creative for an hour before the business day gets rolling. I work on chord progressions or little ideas for new songs. 10h00 The label team comes in and we talk about strategies, the shows that weekend and the marketing and events planned for that period. There’s a lot of admin that goes into releasing records, and with all the new Spotify and Apple Music changes, we have our hands full. 14h00 I train at Apex in Bryanston where they have all the best boxing, kickboxing and MMA/BJJ couches in the country. I’ve been lucky enough to train with Don Madge, Boyd Allen and Chad Hanekom (AKA Superman), who’s a good friend and my martial arts mentor. 16h00 I head back into the office do some social media stuff. 18h00 If I’m not busy, I’ll make a healthy meal to prepare for the night’s studio festivities. Some of my favourite dishes to cook are seared tuna with greens, salad with olive oil and vegetable curry ... it depends on the weather, really. 20h00 It’s now time to get serious. Our studio session starts, and that means no phones, no emails and no distractions. I’ll usually be in there – with no breaks – until around 02h00 on an early or 04h00 on a late night. 04h00 I have some midnight snacks and then put on a podcast to listen to while I drift off. DESERT MILK IS NOW AVAILABLE IN SOUTH AFRICA Although camel milk may seem strange at first, communities in North Africa, The Middle East and parts of Asia have been using it for decades. It’s also gained popularity in Germany and is now available here in SA. This cow’s milk alternative has so many benefits: It’s non-allergenic, good for gut health and boosts the immune system. It tastes similar cow’s milk but is a more ethical alternative because camels are only separated from their calves after a month unlike conventional dairy farming. Baby camels stays with their mothers for the first month and then spend time with them twice daily at milking times. Plus, it can now be purchased in powder form that lasts much longer than cow’s milk. 1 www.takealot.com

THE TALLEST BUILDING IN AFRICA IS HERE!

Three billion rand, 6,050 steps to the top, 55 floors, 234 metres of concrete and 410,000 metres of wiring ... it’s all worth it once you’re standing on top of the tallest building in Africa. It’s priceless! This iconic structure is an architectural masterpiece, and we were one of the few media selected to explore this excellent workmanship. We loved everything about it: The exquisite marble surrounds, the unique local artworks and, of course, the view. The Leonardo is a mixed-used development consisting of the hotel, state-of-the-art conference centres, Aurum Restaurant, Legacy Balance Spa, a Montessori Pre-School and a sky bar (with the best 360-degree view of the City of Gold). The Leonardo Suite – measuring 3000 m², 1900m² under roof and 1100m² of garden area – is the most sought-after home in Africa and has redefined the opulent sophistication of modern African luxury lifestyle living. 1 www.leonardo.co.za Hello Joburg • November 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

Vanessa Ralston and Kara-Leigh Baker are the motherdaughter team behind The French Lemon, a luxury bath, body and home brand based in Morningside offering vegan, natural, cruelty-free and eco-friendly products ranging from soaps and shampoo bars to candles and diffusers. We sat down with this girl-boss duo to find out where the name came from, their new sweet pea and men’s ranges and everything in between. 1 www.thefrenchlemon.co.za E @lemonfrench Q @thefrenchlemonsa Tell us about The French Lemon’s inception. Before we officially opened The French Lemon in March 2017, we intended to make and sell preserved lemons. While we enjoyed doing this, the universe had something else planned for us.We adopted a six-month-old French bulldog called Ian who we were fostering through The Sushi & Panda Foundation. His background and story inspired us to do something that helped him leave a legacy behind – one about helping animals in some way. This led us to bath and body products that are free of palm oil and sodium lauryl sulphate and tested on humans rather than animals. Where did the name come from? We felt drawn to the word ‘lemon’ as we associated it with how the idea was born as well as the fresh, clean and crisp characteristics of the fruit. We also wanted to bring Ian into the name, and the word ‘French’ sounded appealing and luxurious. Ian then became the face of our company to let consumers know that we’re opposed to any ingredients that cause harm to animals. How will one know if your products will work for their skin type? We test our products on willing friends and family members with the most sensitive skin. Our products are made with all-natural ingredients that have probably been around longer than humans, meaning that they don’t need to be further tested. All our soaps are made with luxe ingredients like kaolin clay, coconut oil and shea butter, while our lotions contain hemp oil and vitamin E. What are some of your most popular products? Our Pumice Soap – a half soap, half ground pumice – is our best seller. Our sugar and Himalayan salt body scrubs are Kara’s favourite products. Other popular buys are our bath bombs made with essential oils, coconut oil and mica colours and our ‘Do Not Eat’ range of soaps that are made to look like sweet treats like doughnuts, waffles, chocolate bars, cinnamon buns, lollipops, ice creams, lemons and oranges. What inspired the new sweet pea range? Spring beauty and the freshness of all the flowers blooming around us.We’re so lucky to have so much colour and inspiration all around us! What are the must-haves in the men’s range? The activated charcoal soap with scents of peppermint and cucumber,‘Butt Naked’ sugar and salt scrubs, Epsom salt bar, shampoo bar, shaving soap with shaving brush and shower steamer. Where are we likely to bump into you in Joburg? Some of our fave restaurants are Gemelli, Zio La Famiglia, Bellagio and Banchan. We also love a good pampering at Grace Skin & Wellness, Just Browzing and Stylash. EAT: La Petite Maison Located along the hustle and bustle of 7th Street, La Petite Maison is a teeny tiny sliver of a restaurant dressed up with inky blue walls, lush greenery, velvet banquettes and burnt orange cocktail chairs. Opened by Tyeya Ngxola and Timothy Stewart, it’s so narrow it feels like a railway carriage and can seat no more than 20 diners but considering the rise in speakeasy bars’ concepts and Instagrammable eateries, it’s clear that the off-the-plate experience is now just as important to diners as what they’re eating. Each course on the map that is the menu represents a region. To start, order the Atlantic-inspired squid ink risotto followed by the Kleinmond sous vide octopus or the Magaliesburg pork belly for mains and the irresistible Coffee Bay tiramisu for dessert. 1 7th Street, Melville m 010 593 7986 E @maisonmelville Q @la_maisonmelville

The best of 2019

How magnificent is the City of Gold? So magnificent that narrowing down this list to just six of the best places that opened this year was a pretty tall order. Joburg is home to killer restaurants and bars, tough-to-top nightlife and culture, and countless other sources of inspiration. So, to concoct this roundup, we turned to our editors. Kranz DRINK: Smoking Kills Bar Amid the swank food sanctums sprouting around Melville, Smoking Kills Bar is an unfussy hidey-hole firmly entrenched in part of the space that African tale-inspired cocktail bar, Mootee Bar, used to be in. It has all the hallmarks of any self-respecting dive: Reasonably priced cocktails and craft rums, a retro TV playing grainy reruns of soapies and cartoons, soulful music, scuzzy bathrooms and smokers. Despite the name, you’re allowed to smoke indoors (there’s no outside seating anyway) and the neighbourhood crowd takes full advantage of this. There are also nicer touches, such as an artfully grungy wall marked with graffiti and anarchist tags. Sidle up to the bar and let one of the well-seasoned mixologists serve you a rum cocktail like the Not a Piña Colada or a Chronicles of Banana Man. 78A 4th Avenue, Melville m 071 346 8804 1 www.smokingkillsbar.com E @smokingkillsbar Q @smokingkillsbar

PAMPER: Sorbet SK-N Living in Joburg can be tough on your skin with all the pollution and air-conditioned offices. That’s before we even think about dehydration, harsh weather, alcohol, sun exposure and the inevitable passing of time (eek!). Luckily, at the newly opened Sorbet SK-N in Hyde Park Corner, you can get a relaxing, soothing facial massage, some instant radiance, a total skincare overhaul or something a little more intense. The chic salon boasts understated grey and dusty pink interiors and state-of-the-art treatment rooms and skin technology, and there are many skin treatments to pick from for both women and men. If you’re strapped for time, make a beeline for Sorbet SK-N to sneak a quickie facial in for a well-deserved self-care session. EAT: The Prawnery Bistro & Bar Sometimes, trawling Joburg, it can feel like there aren’t that many fish in the sea. Good seafood is hard to come by – well, that was the case until The Prawnery Bistro & Bar opened in Illovo, at least. Whether you fancy a fishy bite or like to savour your seafood, make a beeline for this bright, open-fronted prawn bar and fishmonger that’s thrillingly informal with a doublesided menu of prawn and other seafood dishes. To nibble, order a few of meze – the lightly battered rock shrimp, crisp battered calamari, deep-fried soft shell crab and Swedish Skagen. For mains, you simply must try their signature prawns, which are grilled and served with your choice of lemon, garlic and parsley or peri peri sauce. Unfortunately, there are no desserts, but the giant frozen margaritas sure make up for it! Illovo Junction, corner of Oxford Road & Corlett Drive, Illovo m 060 528 7958 Q @theprawnery

Smoking Kills PAMPER: Salon Geisha This new beauty salon is definitely going to draw in the crowds! Without a doubt, there’s nothing quite like it in Joburg – or the whole country, actually. It was created in a charming, typical Parkhurst home that’s intimate and cosy with buckets of sunlight. But the most impressive thing about this space is the outrageously flamboyant design and décor. Oh, and the Tea Merchant tea they serve, which gingerly arrives in traditional Japanese style with a pot, saucer and all. If that doesn’t tickle your toes, put your feet up and opt for a glass of bubbles. There’s also a noticeable artistic flair to the space – think Geisha wallpaper and garishly flowered wall art that’s so beautiful it’s almost aural. It’s so easy to get lost in the decorative printed patterns but try focus on your five-star mani and pedi too!

T

EAT: Kranz While sipping on a glass of the finest Cinsault from the Swartland and being mesmerised by a breathtaking view, it’s impossible not to fall head over heels in love with our City of Gold. It’s right here at the brand new Kranz restaurant inside The Northcliff Boutique Hotel that you’ll get a taste of the high life. But please don’t expect fine dining, ornamental white tablecloths or a buzzing, pretentious gaggle. Instead, you’ll feel right at home ... it’s like dining at your besties if they owned the second highest natural point in the city. The menu is simple with five starters and six mains. We recommend starting with the hearty South Indian mattar paneer or seared duck breast followed by the signature oxtail ravioli for mains. 10 Solution Close, Northcliff m 087 898 7856 1 www.thenorthcliff.com E @thenorthcliff Q @thenorthcliff

Tell us about some of the brand collaborations you’ve done this year. I’ve worked with some amazing brands this year, but the biggest one has to be Coach. I’ve also worked with Google, Yoco, LG, Fox TV, Boomerang TV, Vans, Nicci Boutiques, Zemp, Steve Madden, SODA Block, Pandora, American Swiss, Revlon, Pretty Lee Lashes, Brown & Ayo, Almay, Eucerin, Jet, Truworths, Spectacle Boutique, Corona, Castle Light, Tastic, Milo, Sally Williams, Manhattan Sweets and Standard Bank.

How would you describe your style? I don’t have a specific style. Instead, I dress according to my mood and the occasion. I love sneakers as much as I love heels.

What’s been the highlight of 2019 for you? There have honestly been so many. I’m in a really good space and am grateful for many things that have happened this year. Compiled by Candice May Image Phillip Santos.

BOX Stars

The very best subscription boxes money can buy Subscription boxes have become all the rage lately and we can see why. Ordering one is basically like signing yourself up for a surprise gift every month ... seriously, what could be better than that? So, we’ve rounded up some of our favourites to try.

Tuckbox If you’re the kind of person who never has the time to pack lunch but still wants to eat healthy – or perhaps you’re just sick of peanut butter sandwiches – Tuckbox is for you. Each box comes with a selection of ten individually packed and portion-controlled snacks that are perfect for taking to work or enjoying at home. You’re able to specify any dietary requirements or preferences, but all of the items will be a surprise, which means you’re guaranteed to discover some new, exciting treats that you didn’t even know existed. Tuckbox can be ordered on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis. Cost: R190 per box 1 www.tuckbox.co.za

The Book Case If you’re a book worm, this box is sure to be your cup of tea – just note that it’s geared towards younger readers. Every month the box has a different theme and three to five items along with a mystery book relating to this theme. They’ve had some exceptional stuff before, such as Funko Pops, mugs, bracelets and notebooks to name a few. The Mystery Box is a new release, but there are of course classics too like Harry Potter. That’s not all ... each box also contains original artwork and prints from local and international artists and illustrators. Cost: R495 per box 1 www.thebcase.co.za Q @thebcase E @thebcaseshop D @thebcase

The Gin Box Gin fanatics, this box is a major must! It brings a mystery bottle of South African craft gin straight to your door every month with a selection of two to four handmade tonics. After you’ve tried this box, an ordinary G&T will never do again. To accompany the superb drinks is a selection of three gourmet snacks – think lemon and macadamia cherubs, honey butter shortbread, rootstock coriander and paprika potato crisps, and orange fudge. You’ll also receive a set of distiller’s notes, garnishes and cocktail ideas. Cost: R699 per month or R7,700 per year

Unicorn Fitness Box This subscription box has everything a fitness junkie could ever need. It’s aimed at women and contains a mix of local and international brands. A typical box has five to seven fitness related items, including crop tops, fitness tape, water bottles and healthy snacks. What’s so great about this box is that all the items are full-sized rather than samples – not mention that they’re super-practical too. The main premise of a subscription box is that the contents of the box are supposed to be worth more than what you pay for, and that’s definitely the case with Unicorn Fitness Box Cost: R565 per month

ORIENTAL PLAZA For all your shopping needs

Some say that life is about the journey and not the destination ... but we tend to disagree. Particularly when the said journey entails spending your Saturday driving from store to store trying to tick off all the items on your shopping list. That’s why we love Oriental Plaza, which has everything you could ever hope for under one roof.

Fashion fixes Oriental Plaza houses over 350 unique stores, and loads of those are fashion focused. Kripa Collection is the place to go if you’re in search of some fabulous pieces to update your jewellery collection – think on-trend tassle earrings, watches and rings. They also stock showstopping saris. If you fancy some new footwear, BB Shoes is guaranteed to have a pair that will strike your fancy. For travel bags, look no further than Maryam Leather and Travel Goods for quality travel essentials at a reduced price. Docrat Bros is yet another example of a store that’s completely unique and features a selection of stunning formal hats. Bites of Orient No visit to Oriental Plaza would be complete without grabbing a samoosa from World of Samoosas, which offers oh-so-delicious eastern pastries. You simply must treat yourself to an authentic bunny chow or tandoori from the Golden Peacock Restaurant too. Otherwise, pick up some spices to take your homemade curries to the next level at Akhalwayas Masala Centre. But don’t forget to enjoy a little sugar with your spice with a donut from Dunky Donut Bar or a candy apple at Hameeds Café!

F

ounder of GlamLash Lash Studio, Thembi Mangena started her inspiring journey as a domestic worker. But she had bigger dreams for herself – she wanted to build a better life for her family and to be selfsufficient. She believed she could and so she did. Thembi worked as a lash technician before she’d gained enough wisdom to launch her very own lash studio. Today, she’s a lash architect has the fine motor skills of an artist. So, why get lash extensions, you ask? Well, who doesn’t want to enhance their natural beauty? Not to mention that you’ll never have to buy another mascara again ... or have to deal with gluggy, gluey strip lashes and removing eye makeup. All you’ll need is to visit every three to four weeks for a fill and an eyelash brush to keep your lashes intact. Thembi explains that eyelash extensions are semi-permanent, synthetic extensions that are individually glued onto your natural lashes. If you’re a firm believer of the old adage that beauty is pain, forget it! There’s no pain or discomfort involved in getting lash extensions. As a bonus, you’ll get to nap while they’re getting done. And don’t fret, as they won’t look fake unless you’re going for that va-va-voom dramatic look. There are different types of lash extensions – all unique volumes and different lengths – but a more natural lash is what we recommend.

Sothys Triple Hydration Facial From the moment you arrive at Fairlawns Spa, you’re treated like royalty. That’s certainly not the primary reason to book the Sothys Triple Hydration Facial (R850), but it’s a pleasing byproduct. The spa itself, one of the most luxurious spaces in Joburg, is opulent and otherworldly. Everything is tailored to your taste, from the temperature of the room to the music you’ll listen to during the facial. The treatment is the most intense on our list. Developed by Parisian skincare brand Sothys, it’s a powerful combination of firm massage, rich masks, and moisturising serums to smooth and lift your skin. Did we mention that some of the products contain hyaluronic acid and patented boletus extract to reactivate the skin’s natural hydration levels to reveal a more youthful complexion? It’s the perfect solution to quench thirsty skin and combat dehydration – after just one treatment, your skin’s hydration levels will increase by 71%. The salon also offers women’s and men’s waxing, threading, tinting, lash extensions, spray tans and massages as well as makeup and hair services. The wash and blow dry bar will take your ho-hum look to the next level for just R135 for short to medium hair or R145 for long hair. Our best advice is to book in when you’ve got time to spare and you want some proper pampering. Canoodling just outside the City of Gold has never been easier thanks to this prestigious property! We’ve visited Mount Grace countless times and there’s reason for it: It always delivers in excellence. It’s as simple as that. This hotel will bend over backwards to make your stay as memorable as possible! Plus, it's home to one of the very best spas in the country. In fact, you’d struggle to find better, … especially in such a picturesque setting alongside the mountain range and raw nature. We recommend visiting for a night and booking yourself and your loved one in for a spoil at the spa. We recommend one of the signature Africology treatments and a Souls of Africa Conditioning Full Body Massage followed by a plunge in the pool and a sizzling steam before plummeting into the bush spa jacuzzi. Are you fed up with stress? Then you simply must have a full-body exfoliation or a rooibos mud wrap too. This spa hasn’t just mastered it all, but also has character just like the villa-style accommodation. WINNER WINNER JOZI T Brought to us by the same team that opened Perron and A Streetbar Named Desire, Winner Winner Jozi doesn’t look like more than a casual American-style diner at first glance. But once you settle in and get acquainted with the food and cocktail menu, you realise it’s so much more. It’s greasy-spoon gourmet … fried chicken heaven for hardcore fans. Whether it’s twice-fried buffalo hot wings, southern fried chicken strips or a mountainous prego roll you’ve set your sights on, they’ve got you covered.

24

The social joint serves its fresh, free-range chooks in various forms – think buttermilk chicken poutine topped with feta and chicken crackling, flame-grilled chicken in peri peri or middle eastern marinade, and chicken and jalapeño croquettes with a coriander dipping sauce. In our humble opinion, nothing beats the Princess Laya-a burger though. Looking a bit like a Jackson Pollock painting sandwiched into a firm, bouncy bun, it comes with squirts of fiery wasabi kewpie mayo, Asian slaw splurging out and crisply bubbled batter coating the buttermilk-bathed breast meat. Just a heads up: This is mercilessly messy stuff, so don’t go dressed in your date-night finery! They also do a rockin’ Motherclucker prego roll steeped in Winner Winner prego sauce Hello Joburg • November 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

In the mood for a finger-lickin’ feed? Fried chicken joints are like pigeons, post boxes and discarded copies of the Sunday Times in Joburg – they’re bloody everywhere. But quantity doesn’t always ensure quality and seeking out the best birds in town requires a little research. We put in the legwork and found the perfectly breaded and well-seasoned wonder in the heart of Melville. – and it flies out. While it’s all about chicken and burgers, there are sides too, including mac ’n cheese with caramelised onions, cherry tomatoes and a panko breadcrumb topping plus mashed potatoes and gravy, pap ’n spicy sauce and fresh green beans. Don’t worry, vegans ... this isn’t the only option on the menu for you. There’s also vegan fried ‘chicken’ and a Lyndsay Lo-hen burger – a mighty pile-up of spicy, smoky banana peels (vegan bacon) on a vegan brioche bun with lettuce, pickles, tomato and vegan BBQ sauce. While Winner Winner Jozi has already established itself as a dude-food burger slinger with a cult following to match, they’re also up there with the best when it comes to dessert. We could point you towards their CBD-infused brownies, cereal milk panna cotta or sour cherry cheesecake, but the Snickers and peanut butter chocolate cake takes the cake (pun intended). On the cocktail menu, there are too many quirky tipples to mention, from the Drunken Kimchi made with pickled ginger and daikon to the

Peanut Butter & Jelly Old Fashioned shaken with peanut-infused bourbon. The Negroni Sorbet with your choice of an MCC brut or Campari topping is something that everyone will enjoy. And at just R62 a pop, you can afford to sip on them on them all afternoon long … winning! t the heart of this restaurant is honest, authentic food. You simply won’t find fresher produce or greener greens because at this location they grow their very own fruit, veggies and herbs inside the restaurant. That’s right – as you enter this eclectic space, you’ll find a glorious organic veggie garden and (if you book) you can dine under the pawpaw trees.

There’s a smell of freshness; an aura that this is the way the gastronomic world was intended to be ... farm-fresh, ethical, healthy and honourable. So, what’s for lunch? The menu changes weekly because it depends on what’s readily available for chef Daniela Gutstadt. Grab a table inside, out on the terrace or in the garden and then order an oat milk cappuccino before the feast commences.

This hidden gem in Lanseria delivers in joy and charm – the only regret you’ll have is that you didn’t visit sooner. Yes, it’s a schlep, but it’s so worth it! We recommend popping past on a weekend for a lunch away from the city smoulder. Picture it … it’s a sunny morning in November, the birds are tweeting, and an array of freshly baked breads and handpicked veggies pass by in the waiter’s hands. And did we mention that there’s also a coffee roaster, cheese deli, butcher and market?

For starters, we had the bursting heirloom tomato salad shielded with olive oil and garlic. For mains, we tried the perfectly toasted organic buckwheat bowl as well as the chicken flattie with a side order of Parmesan fries and homegrown kale and spinach. You guessed it … everything was delicious and it’s safe to say that they’ve won us over! Savour the seven seas As the saying goes, there are many fish in the sea ... and plenty of restaurants in Joburg. But there are none quite like Maximillien, where diners are tempted with delightfully classic offerings like deep-fried calamari, southern basted pork ribs and braised beef oxtail.

Another signature dish worth trying is the butter chicken curry, served with basmati rice, sambals, poppadoms and roti. If you think all of this sounds delicious, get ready for what we regard as the star of the menu – the seafood. On the Seven Seas selection, you can choose between Mauritian sea bass, Norwegian salmon, Mozambican queen prawns, West Coast mussels and kingklip.

28

Maximillien also has a seafood platter special for one or two people on Friday nights that’s absolutely unbeatable. It’s great value for money, the portion sizes are generous and the flavours are sensational. The only adequate way to describe the salmon – and we know it’s a cliché – is that it tastes like the ocean; it’s just so flavourful and fresh. The platter also comes with clams in a rich and tasty tomato sauce as well as a healthy Hello Joburg • November 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

helping of roast vegetables and rice. Oh, and did we mention the succulent prawns that pair perfectly with the garlic butter sauce? Indulging in a meal at Maximillien will leave you satisfied but not stuffed. This means you’re guaranteed to have room left for dessert! The signature dessert is the Big Apple – a spiced apple compote with white chocolate mousse, almond, cinnamon sable and candied walnut crumble. There are also some South African favourites like the Malva and Amarula Pudding made with Amarula crémeux, spicy vanilla ice cream and crème anglaise. We can’t overstate how wonderful the food is, but the atmosphere of the place also deserves some credit. The interiors are an ode to 1920s glamour and the soft lighting and single white rose adorning each table give it a romantic, luxurious feel. Let’s just say a visit to Maximillien would be sure to woo any date ... or, in fact, anyone who loves good food. ocated in Legacy Corner Mall in Sandton, Maximillien is all about simple food done right – and that’s evident in every dish on the menu. We’re that told the oxtail is a crowd favourite and it’s easy to see why, given that it’s slow-cooked and served on a bed of creamed potato with whole roasted vegetables, broccoli gremolata and an option of pap and morogo.

MATTHEW FOXON

Words Carly Simon Images Supplied.

Matthew Foxon, head chef at 54 on Bath hotel’s Level Four restaurant, knew he wanted to be a chef from age seven. Inspired by his mother and stalwarts like Keith Floyd and Thomas Keller, chef Matthew is now pouring his passion into exclusive food pairings and dining experiences.

chef of the month

What makes 54 on Bath hotel special? We’re the smallest of Tsogo Sun hotels with only 75 rooms, so we pride ourselves in doing things a little smarter and better. Plus, we have a little more freedom when it comes to doing things as we’re expected to be different in some ways.

served by the chef himself. It costs R1,200 a person, but it’s an opportunity to chit-chat with the chef all night over a bottle of bubbles … you can’t go wrong! We don’t change anything just because we have guests – it’s meant to be a night with the chefs in the kitchen.

What’s your favorite dish on the current menu? That’s like asking a parent to choose their favorite child. My chefs and I are proud of all the dishes and we like to cook with the seasons as opposed to our favourite dishes or preferences.

What inspired the wine pairing dinners? Wine evenings are something I’ve been doing for as long as I can remember and theming them makes it more interesting as opposed to the traditional approaches like food from Italy or France. We have so much to enjoy locally– for example, our annual truffle evening with Woodford truffles was so successful lastyear we did two this year; one hosted by us at Level Four and the other at Palazzo’s Rosa room. Believe me when I tell you our localtruffles are right up there to rival some of theworld’s best!

Fill us in on the new wine pairing dinners. The wine pairing dinners are a real treat, and a steal at just R650 per person. Each one has a relevant theme and showcases some of the best wines South Africa has to offer. The dinners start with an arrival drink and two types of canapés before guests move to the restaurant, where the winemaker and I take them through to menu for the evening. Typically, we kick off with an amusebouche, followed by a starter, middle course, palate cleanser, main course, dessert and then petit fours. The evening is true indulgence and a foodie’s idea of heaven.

What’s your favorite part of Joburg and why? Home is, with my family. I don’t have a favourite part of Jozi – I think this city has far too much character all over it for one to say “this is my favourite” – it might be for that moment, but there will be more moments like it.

And the chef ’s table experience? The chef ’s table is a fantastic experience as well. Guests get to experience all the action as they sit right in front of the pass and see and hear everything that’s going on over and above being

LERATO'S CORNER A candid review … SAIGON

Known for their use of fresh ingredients and lots of herbs, it’s uncommon not to see a fragrant bowl of pho overflowing with all sorts of greens. That’s just one reason why we love all things Vietnamese cuisine. When Joburgers have a hankering for beautiful bánh mì sandwiches, oodles of noodles and rice paper rolls, unfortunately only one place comes to mind and that’s Saigon in Rivonia. I say unfortunately because this is the only Jozi restaurant that proudly calls itself a Vietnamese restaurant – but the only reason is because there’s a Vietnamese flag inside. To me personally, the longevity and so-called success of Saigon remains a large question mark. If you’ve ever driven down Rivonia Road in Rivonia, you’ve noticed this restaurant situated on the top floor of Rivonia Junction, with its alluring red and yellow neon signs that read ‘Saigon Vietnamese Restaurant’. It’s been open for many years and I’ve been dragged here a couple times by intrigued out-of-town visitors (much to my dismay), but it will be a long time before I dare visit again. Firstly, the décor both inside and out is a mixture of kitsch Chinese and Thai décor with a few random decorations here and there. It’s neither Vietnamese nor at all tasteful. Then there’s the food, which is possibly the furthest thing from Vietnamese. More like a pool of anything available in Southeast Asia, it’s all prepared as cheaply as possible and comes swimming in Thai sweet chilli sauce. Yes, we’re talking about the cheap type that you can buy at the Asian supermarket down the road. The best way to describe the food: It looks and tastes like expensive fast food. The chicken spring rolls (R51) are served with a very poor sweet chilli sauce, but don’t bother asking for sambal as they’ll give you something that’s not spicy at all but rather has a sweet taste. The steamed fish of the day (R153) has a very obvious taste of not being fresh, and no matter how much ginger, soya and spring onion they drench it in, it’s still tasteless. If you don’t enjoy your meat well done, don’t order the beef chilli hot plate (R145) – the badly-mannered waiters can’t speak English (or Vietnamese, for that matter), so you won’t be understood if you ask to have it done any other way. Two not-so-bad dishes are the tofu and lemongrass stir-fried vegetables (R68) and tempura vegetables (R68). However, like all the other dishes on the menu, the portions are miniscule and don’t come with rice or noodles – that will cost you an extra R23 to R34. To add to all this, the ‘traditional’ Vietnamese iced coffee is nothing more than cold coffee with ice cubes and a swirl of condensed milk, and the restaurant is never busy, so there’s no atmosphere at all. One positive is the chocolate mousse (R57), which is actually a duo of chocolate and vanilla mousse. It’s smooth, silky and sickeningly sweet (that said in the best way possible), and nothing like I’ve ever tasted before. Still, it’s not enough reason to eat at Saigon. Fortunately, if you live in and around the area, you can order it as an after-dinner treat on Uber Eats (#winning!). AMBIENCE FOOD DRINKS SERVICE

Upper Houghton This one’s a no-brainer – the views of the jacarandas from Munro Drive will blow your mind. On a good day, you’ll even be able to see Magaliesburg mountain ridge. Sure, it can be a bit of a trek, but it’s worth it for a jacaranda family reunion. DID YOU KNOW? According to Joburg City Parks, WIlliam Nelson from Nelsonia Nurseries in Turffontein grew 30 million trees, shrubs and plants in Joburg by the 19th century, of which many were jacaranda trees.

Greenside and Emmarentia Keen for a purple picnic? Emmarentia Park is the place to do it with mauve-clad views of the dam. Park in the car park off Orange Road and head into the park, making a stop at the play area right by the Olifants Road entrance first if you’re with the kids. Just watch out for falling flowers – those bright buds are prone to shedding and come with a sticky residue for maximum mess! Bryanston Organic & Natural Market is a heritage brand that’s been a leading light in all things organic and natural for 43 years. It’s now evolving beyond this to position itself as Bryanston Market at Michael Mount – a place for conscious living.

I

nspired by the increased customer awareness and movement towards a healthy and sustainable lifestyle, Bryanston Market at Michael Mount is embarking on an exciting phase of development that will result in a transformed and more compact marketplace with a new look and a wider focus. Besides the Thursday and Saturday market days, the market’s online shop will be expanded to include a fresh food delivery service supported by a convenience shop that will open daily. The purpose of the shop is to assure daily access to the same organic fresh produce and range of delectable delicatessen and bakery wares and natural health products that are available on market days. The research revealed that great service was the number one reason quoted (40%), followed by quality of products (18%) and value for money (10%). Santam embarked on this campaign to support the critical need for small business development in South Africa to celebrate those who are getting it right as well as to encourage South Africans to consciously support local businesses wherever possible. The new offerings of the market expand on this customer endorsement and are aimed at fostering a conscious living space for like-minded people to come together. A place for sharing, learning and belonging where they lead by example and the experience is more than the purchase of a product. This will be supported by an events calendar offering demonstrations, talks, presentations and workshops on a variety of related topics. What will remain firmly intact is their promise of openness and honesty with their customers and their dedication to offering quality products that have been sourced and made with integrity. These changes are already happening and will culminate towards the end of the year in time for the famous Moonlight Markets; a series of evening markets offering carol singing, children’s entertainment, Christmas shopping and lots of delicious food and good music. The Moonlight Markets will take place every Tuesday evening from 19 November to 17 December 2019 from 17h00 to 21h00. Keep an eye on Bryanston Market at Michael Mount’s website and social media for more details on these exciting developments. Joburg’s first and finest market is a magical place removed from the rush of everyday life. Previously known as Bryanston Organic Market, Bryanston Market at Michael Mount offers visitors inspired crafts, wholesome food and a unique experience that marketgoers have come to love. Better yet, it’s situated only 20 minutes from Sandton and entrance is free. A GHOST TOUR

The convenient thing about ghosts is that they tend to hang around old cities everywhere, including Jozi. The Mystery Ghost Bus tour starts near the Joburg Gen in Parktown at 7 pm, where you board a luxury bus. Based on the London Ghost Bus, the five-hour-long tour entertains with ghost, murder and mystery stories in the city. The tour offers something for everyone: pub stops to get you into the spirit (excuse the pun) with eerie storytelling at one of the pubs, meals, entertainment, the science of paranormal, live and dramatically recorded ghost stories, historical buildings and several off-the-bus-stops. It ends with a chilling climax in a graveyard – at midnight, of course! 1 www.mysteryghostbus.co.za

MOUNTAIN BIKING

The Braamfontein Spruit is one of the most popular mountain biking trails in the country. It’s a greenbelt in the middle of a city and is 60km long, but don’t worry – it’s an easy to moderate level trail. The trail starts in Melville Koppies AKA jacaranda central and runs all the way through to Paulshof. It also joins up with paths from various other points along the route, namely Albert’s Farm, Emmarentia, Delta Park, The Sandton Field and Study Centre in Parkmore, Sandton Field, Riverside and Bryanston Drive. For safety reasons, it’s recommended that you ride in groups of at least four.

SUNDAY SESSIONS

Think Sunday is a day of rest? No chance!

A Streetbar Named Desire

Hot, sunny days are finally here … and we want to squeeze every last zesty drop out of the sunnier months! Besides the bevy of killer music festivals, the season also brings great end-of-week parties that were made for dancing and sunshine. From world-class DJs playing on a rooftop ‘jungle’ to a prohibition-era jazz soiree in a hotel basement, they don’t call it Sunday Funday for nothing. Social on Main is known to go all out at its Summer Sessions parties, with frills like live, unplugged performances and nostalgic DJ sets chockfull of eccentric gems. The major perk is that all the action happens on the gin deck, which has over 15 different gins to pick from plus plenty tonics and garnishes. Gin lovers, consider this your go-to Sunday spot! The space fills up quickly though, so your best bet is to arrive early so you can get a seat before the crowd rolls in. Why go? It attracts a north Joburg crowd worth getting in with When? Every Sunday from 15h00 until 20h00

For ready-to-party Joburgers, one of the city’s best Sunday parties is still Sundays in the Living Room. Yeah, Living Room may not be new, but it’s still one of the only truly cool places for rooftop drinks. If you’ve been to this buzzy garden oasis, you know the drill – lots of cocktail-swilling, dancey-dance fun, with swoonsome views of the city’s skyline from its position in central Maboneng and a carefully curated DJ lineup serving up the rhythmic-motioninducing goodness. Why go? For inventive cocktails like the Minty Magic Unicorn When? Every Sunday from 11h00 until 19h00

Or, you can just grab a Corona or Tennis-ee Williams vodka cocktail and relax. These parties can be crowded and distractingly scene-y, but they’re also one of the best in the city to get turned on to boundary-pushing (but danceable) beats … and entry is free! Why go? SUMMER NIGHTLIFE HOTSPOTS THE TINY TIKI BAR

Whether you’re looking to grab afterwork drinks with coworkers or a spot for an early-game Tinder date, The Tiny Tiki Bar knows how to make the warm weather remain a breeze. Adjoining sister venue The Anti-Social Social Club, here you can look forward to a colourful, laidback atmosphere and kitsch cocktails, such as The Zombie made with a famous blend of four different rums and the Bahama Mama; an exotic blend of coconut, Kahlua and Sailor Jerry Rum. The next morning, go back to cure your hangover with a pancake stack with housemade miso and maple bacon. 10 7th Street, Melville m 071 774 5242

HOTSPOT:

CHOKING KILLS

THE HIDE OUT

The Hide Out is just the place to go if you’re staying at a backpacker in the inner-city. Not only because you should have plenty left to splurge on drinks seeing as you won’t be splashing out on a fancy pants bedroom, but also because you’ll meet fellow travellers and like-minded people over drinks like the Mojito Mint, Cranberry Daiquiri and Strawberry Bubblegum. Fun fat? The building the bar is inside used to be a secret printing press and hideout for antiapartheid leaders, hence the name. Curiocity Backpackers, 302 Fox Street, Maboneng m 011 027 5257

C

hoking Kills is the latest and greatest extension to one of our fave cocktails bars, Smoking Kills in Melville. The new red room – or should we say redrum – is inspired by underground European nightclubs and DJ rooms.

THE IMMIGRANT BAR

Although Choking Kills can’t be more than 10 metres away from the door that opens onto an airy street, it indeed succeeds in creating that underground club atmosphere. Perhaps it’s the low lighting and vermillion walls that contribute to the intended claustrophobia? Whatever it is, it’s safe to say that it’s delivering in terms of vibe. If you’ve ever visited Smoking Kills on a Saturday night, you know that seating can be a big issue in the intimate bar, but Choking Kills has the solution to this, even if it’s in the form of a seedy-looking couch.

SHAKERS COCKTAIL BAR

You might recognise Shakers Cocktail Bar from most of Joburg’s markets a couple years ago. Its permanent location that takes form of an open-air cocktail bar in Maboneng’s quirky Maverick Corner only has a few tables available, but you won’t mind that once the salsa dancing starts. The cocktail menu includes all the warm-weather classics as well as cocktails served in teapots, buckets and jam jars, all garnished with fresh fruit and berries. Plus, their new kitchen serves up finger-licking gastropub meals like burgers, ribs and halloumi sticks. 300 Commissioner Street, Maboneng m 011 015 7111

Not only is Choking Kills a practical addition, it’s also upped the ante of Smoking Kills by taking it from a chilled drinking spot to a must-visit nightclub. The renovation has given rise to a DJ booth that’s has been used by the likes of Kerry-Anne Allerston and Nathan Summers, which means that there are live DJ sets every weekend. Plus, there’s more room for dancing.

Words Amber Richardson Images Supplied.

Brought to you by the same guys behind 86 Public and Republic of 94 and closely linked to the Once in Joburg ‘flashpackers’ hostel, you can bet that The Immigrant Bar is where the party’s at. Find on a seat on the two-tiered terrace that overlooks Braam’s busy Grove Square and get happy drunk on signature citrus-based jam jar cocktails. On the cocktail menu you’ll also find the likes of a Cinnamon Pear Mojito, Raspberry Grapefruit Rosemary Martini and Pineapple Breeze. Unfortunately, apart from the nachos, we wouldn’t recommend the food. 90 De Korte Street, Braamfontein m 061 443 0084

A European nightclub experience in Jozi

Even though the new space is quite different from the 90s nostalgia of Smoking Kills, it carries its signature style through quirky and politically oriented wall art and neon signs. Most importantly, you can still enjoy the same rum-based cocktails that you know and love, such as The Chronicles of Banana Man and Not a Piña Colada. Set off at sunset In Todd Hayne’s unconventional biopic, I’m Not There, various actors take on the challenge of playing legendary musician Bob Dylan as they portray different facets of Dylan’s public personas. Amongst the lineup of actors, which includes Christian Bale, Heath Ledger and Richard Gere, came the unanticipated casting of award-winning actress Cate Blanchett. Blanchett plays Dylan as he was in the 1960s: A little bit jaded and wickedly witty … and her performance is simply brilliant. Blanchett received many accolades for this particular role, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress nomination. If there’s only one thing you take away from this list, it’s making sure that you watch this! 1 www.everard-read.co.za 1 www.circagallery.org

THE ART OF GALLERY HOPPING

Go wide Next, it’s time to take a trip a little further afield and visit art galleries on the outskirts of Rosebank. We highly recommend checking out Lizamore & Associates on Jan Smuts Avenue as well as Gallery 2 just down the road. It’s worth noting that some galleries aren’t open on First Thursdays, but they will be if they have an exhibition opening, which often happens on – yup, you guessed it – the first Thursday of the month. So, make sure to find out what exhibition launches are happening before you go. 1 www.lizamore.co.za 1 www.gallery2.co.za

The key(e) to it all Keyes Art Mile is undeniably the hub of First Thursdays in Rosebank. They even have their own First Thursdays event dubbed ‘First Thursday at Keyes’. The first 600 tickets are free and thereafter the tickets aren’t too pricey. The main event takes place on Keyes Avenue, which is closed off to traffic for the evening to create a street market that has live music, food trucks and pop-up galleries. The Trumpet building is home to art galleries such as SMAC and TMRW, both of which always participate in First Thursdays. We insist you take a look at TMRW Gallery – this futuristic space makes use of technology like VR to create exhibitions that are nothing short of incredible. 1 www.keyesartmile.co.za

A guide to First Thursdays in Rosebank Eat your art out! Food is arguably the most important part of any good event, and there’s definitely no shortage of it on First Thursdays. Indulge in delicious Mexican food from Picassos Mexican Taqueria food truck or grab a slice of the best wood-fired pizza ever from the Brohemian. If street food isn’t your style, the surrounding area has a plethora of great restaurants. Stop off for a mighty at BGR or head upstairs to Momo Kuro for a selection of Asian fusion tapas that are ideal for sharing with a group of friends. Then end things off on a sweet note with an ice cream sandwich made with a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie and vanilla ice cream from Marble. 1 www.eatbgr.com 1 www.momobaohaus.com 1 www.marble.restaurant

To drive or not to drive? Keyes Art Mile has a designated parking lot that’s open on First Thursdays, but it can get pretty full. For this reason, we suggest taking an Uber rather than driving – especially if you’re planning on taking full advantage of the free wine on offer at exhibition openings!

First Thursdays in Rosebank are truly special social events in Jozi defined by amazing art and entertainment as well as (most importantly) an unforgettable vibe. DELIGHTS Downtime enjoyments that will exercise your mind

It’s the typical cliché to use in November, but ... where did the year go? As we snowball through the final stretch of 2019, it seems fitting that we focus on entertainment that keeps our minds elasticised in a time where we can sometimes feel exhaustion creeping in.The end of the year tends to become a time for focus on self-reflection at work as well, so ensuring you stay motivated is needed.

WATCH: Silicon Valley - the final season MSilicon Valley dropped in 2014 and follows the struggles of a nerdy computer programmer and his geeky friends as they try to turn a great idea into a successful business in the high-tech world of San Francisco, now known as Silicon Valley. The show pokes fun at big tech companies while also giving insight into the struggles of budding entrepreneurs. It’s funny, witty and will have you snorting tea through your nose at least once. The final series debuts on Showmax in early December, so you have this month to binge the rest and ensure you’re all caught up for the big conclusion. FOLLOW: Hellojoburgmag Head on over to Instagram and be sure to follow the Hello Joburg account. As you push through the last few weeks in the office, this Instagram feed will give you sunshine and wonder plus some great inspiration for spots to visit to treat yourself or indulgent restaurants to enjoy for year-end. Sometimes only Mauritius will do – a dreamy Indian Ocean island where the beaches are eye-searingly white, the water is as swimming-pool blue as it looks on the postcards and the deliciously reliable weather makes it a winter-sun showstopper. Here, more than anywhere else, it’s crucial to pick the right home for the week. While the colour-popping coral reefs and hammocks under swaying palm trees come as standard, Sun Resorts gives this destination something different to offer. When to go: All year round (summer is November to April) Flight time: 3.5 hours direct to Plaine Magnien Time difference: 2 hours ahead

T

he archipelago of Mauritius is thrilling to fly over, and the airplane view of calm lagoons and pancake-batter atolls is sure to blast away any short-haul fogginess. Fly in the morning and be there, barefoot, by lunchtime … or at least cocktail hour. Still sensationally unspoilt with dramatic natural topography, Mauritius feels almost otherworldly. And beyond the beaches, it’s everything else that should come with a beach holiday. Few tropical paradises can compete with the magnetic culture of Mauritius’ seaside enclaves – the barefoot-chic island attitude and wild and free lifestyle offers so much fun for pleasure seekers, drinkers and eaters. Sand, sea and sunshine, but also food and wine, swimming and playing, music and dancing ... and there are some deeply smart places to stay. Whether you’re looking for an isolated stretch of sand or a family-friendly resort, Sun Resorts has enough options to suit every type of traveller. So, what are you waiting for? LONG BEACH Best for: Equal measures of relaxation and activity Discerning guests seeking a blissful haven will instantly fall in love with the grande dame of the Sun Resorts group, the magnificent five-star Long Beach. Fringing the famed beach at Belle Mare along the untamed East Coast of Mauritius and encompassed by dense tropical gardens, the resort manages to be both incredibly spoiling and completely laidback.

Sleep The generous luxury rooms are tastefully kitted out with sleek and stylish furniture and natural, mid-toned décor. Each one features a private balcony or terrace and close access to its stretch of beach, garden or pool. Views across the immaculate beach that melts into cyan waters are splendid, and the ocean is clear enough to see straight to the bottom – not to mention that the coral reef is home to thousands of sea creatures. That’s not all – kingsize beds, speedy Wi-Fi and air-conditioning add to the ultimate personal comfort. If you can, book a Junior Suite with a sea view, which has a stunning sea view including a spacious private furnished terrace overlooking the lagoon.

with an icy glass of Bottega Gold and presents some of the most pristine plates we’ve ever seen, including salmon sashimi with ginger-garlic crumbs, saikyo miso-marinated black cod, charcoal-grilled beef cube roll, and a melting dark chocolate sphere, all washed down with perfect wine pairings. FYI: Hasu falls outside of Long Beach’s meal plans, but guests are given a credit that can be used towards a meal here. Relax Spa buffs are equally well looked after. Go fully horizontal at the super-luxe Cinq Mondes spa hidden amongst lush gardens and surrounded by water – there are authentic traditional treatments and terrifically good back, neck and shoulder massages as well as high-tech anti-ageing facials and Shellac mani-pedis. The best part is that while you’re enjoying some me-time, the children can be kept blissfully busy at the Sun Kids club, where they can try exciting archery lessons taught by a professional coach, pizza-making classes, painting classes or yoga sessions. Play Ile aux Cerfs leisure island, which lies off Trou d’Eau Douce in the largest lagoon of Mauritius, is the best reason to visit Long Beach. It’s probably the most reclusive island escape in Mauritius – and yet also the most indulgent, too. Keen golfers can learn how to play or perfect their swing at the Golf Academy, challenge themselves to an 18-hole course designed by two-time Masters Champion Bernhard Langer or relax on Fillbusters, the exclusive beach for golfers.

Eat and drink There are several slick restaurants serving elegant food – think inviting breakfast buffets at Le Marché, fresh seafood, shellfish and local specialities at Tides, spectacular Italian-inspired dishes at Sapori and Asian cuisine with a modern flair at Chopsticks. Wine buffs should head to our top pick, the quietly glamorous Hasu.

On the private beach, guests are left alone on their little dot to mooch around the fresh coconut and cocktail bar, stretch out on a day bed or take a dip in the turquoise water. It’s a place where it feels like you’re the only people on the planet, but a piña colada is only a wave of the hand away. There’s also a public beach, beach restaurants, an adventure park and a wide variety of water sports.

The world-class Japanese restaurant offers everything from shrines of sushi to a full-blown kaiseki experience. It’s beautiful inside this upmarket establishment designed with dramatic Zen-like flair: There’s a calming wall of sake bottles at the entrance and an open sushi counter so you can watch the skilled chefs at work. Open daily for dinner to diners over the age of 16, Hasu is a sublime choice for a special occasion and promises an evening to remember.

Back at the resort, there’s an abundance of beachside activities, land-based activities and water sports. Try the snorkeling, one-hour nature trail and wall climbing. There are also some unforgettable experiences centred around wellbeing, art, food, music and sports from sunrise to sunset as well as chic bars, live music and culinary experiences in the evenings.

We highly recommend the five-course wine-pairing menu, which begins

The pan-Asian restaurant and cocktail bar shares the same name as the Paris original – and the Sugar Beach branch opened as part of a worldwide rollout. It has a sleek, clubby, oriental look and a food menu inspired by dishes from China, Japan and Thailand. Expect, then, a large sushi and sashimi selection plus dishes like seared tuna tartare, rock shrimp tempura, sea bass ceviche and wagyu rib eye steak. The Queen of the Beach is an absolute must-order – a platter of oysters, ceviche martinis, nigiri and other sushi rolls served on the most spectacular wooden display on ice. The expert mixologists go above and beyond just a run-of-the-mill twist, creating the most dazzling drinks that have to be seen to be believed, such as the White Princess shaken with gin and lemongrass essential oil-infused sake and Flower Spritz made with Aperol-infused dry jasmine flower, sweet white wine and prosecco. The quirkiest, most Instagrammable tipple is the Make a Wish Mauritius 2019, which comes with a wish balloon for you to write down your wish and launch it into the sky. The cocktail menu is available at the bars at both Buddha-Bar Beach and Citronella’s. Relax The way you spend your time in this waterworld wonderland is entirely up to you. Spend the day blissfully lounging at the pool or on the flawless beach. At night, lie in bed or out on the starlit terrace and feel like you’re adrift on a yacht. You can also unwind at the spa, which offers an array of Cinq Mondes experiences steeped in time-honoured ritualistic ceremonies and ancient healing techniques from around the world. The use of the hammam, complimentary with any treatment booked, is not to be missed. Children can join their parents in the pampering or be kept occupied by Sun Kids.

Whether you want your hotel to provide wild spaces for children to roam or the best eco-credentials, the elegant five-star Sugar Beach along the sun-drenched, sheltered bay of Flic-en-Flac is designed to cater for kids with lots of attention lavished on parents and couples too. A testament to the aesthetics of colonial estates in a bygone era, today the refurbished resort is the epitome of a holiday in paradise.

CONFERENCE Confessions What you won’t learn in a masterclass

There’s plenty material out there to support and help you when it comes to planning your next big product launch or host your company’s annual sales conference. But we got the gossip from some of Jozi’s experts in event planning on the things you just won't find in the textbook. Attendance drop off Never count your guests before they arrive. Life is unpredictable and things happen every day … traffic, potholes and sick kids. And, of course, those things are bound to happen on the day that you’re hosting a big event. That’s Murphy for you! Whether people contract their own unique strain of influenza on the day, find themselves stuck with a last minute deadline or just in desperate in need of a duvet day, it’s fair to say that a minimum of 10% of your expected guests won’t show up to your event … and that has absolutely nothing to do with your planning ability. HOTELS AT OR TAMBO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT INTERCONTINENTAL

At the country’s only luxury airport hotel, you can expect nothing less than the crème de la crème. A short walk from the arrival’s hall, the InterContinental touts 138 impeccably appointed rooms, including two lavish suites, which feature floor-to-ceiling windows looking out onto the tarmac – but you’ll never hear a plane take off or land thanks to excellent soundproofing. Clear your head at Camelot Spa, where you can opt for massage therapy or a specialised skin treatment while taking in awe-inspiring views of Joburg – the best balm for a busy day – or enjoy the sleek, indoor heated swimming pool, hydro bath and steam room. SOUTHERN SUN

Set directly adjacent to the airport, the Southern Sun is both an architectural marvel and a biz traveller’s dream. With direct pedestrian access and stacked with 366 comfortable and tastefully furnished en-suite rooms, the hotel is hardly Plan B material. A continental breakfast buffet of fresh bread and pastries, cheeses and cold cuts freshens every morning, and dinners are prime time for Mediterranean-themed dishes at Bernoulli’s Restaurant, from angel hair pasta tossed with diced crayfish tail to pan-fried duck breast fillet served on a sautéed warm vegetable salad followed by homemade blueberry pie topped with whipped cream. Sneak to Caroline’s Day Spa & Salon for a hydration facial, aromatherapy massage, back wrap or hot oil hair treatment and you’ll feel as good as new before that big meeting. PREMIER HOTEL

A mere 2.7km from the airport, the Premier Hotel is pretty swanky for what could easily be another mediocre highway hotel. The 275-room hotel, buffeted by sprawling gardens, looks and feels a little like a tropical oasis – but with better amenities. Take a dip in the pool or, better yet, treat yourself to an Evolving Hammam package at Evolve Day Spa - a signature ritual based on old Turkish baths - that includes a full body cleanse and exfoliation in the hammam room plus a back, neck and shoulder massage. Before you crash, take some time to mingle at the bar and then take the party to the warm and welcoming Kubatana Restaurant for a dinner of high-end African fare. 73 Gladiator Street, Rhodesfield, Kempton Park m 011 393 8000 1 www.premierhotels.co.za

Travelling

WITH GAUTRAIN

Know the difference between the Gautrain Bus and Gautrain Midibus As we all know, Gautrain is the golden thread that connects Gauteng. But once you’ve tapped out of the Gautrain and need to get to your destination, what options do you have to do so? Knowing the difference between the Gautrain Bus and Gautrain Midibus is essential. Gautrain Bus During the week, you can take a ride on the Gautrain to your preferred area where you can board a Gautrain Bus. These buses are linked to train arrival times and operate to and from various Gautrain stations, making them convenient for getting around for all things work related. Gautrain understands that it can’t be all work and no play, so there’s a Gautrain Bus that operates from the Midrand Station on weekends too. Getting to Mall of Africa, the largest single-phase shopping mall built in Africa, has never been quicker or easier! Gautrain Midibus If the area you’re travelling to on the Gautrain doesn’t have a Gautrain Bus route, don’t despair. This is where the Gautrain Midibus offering comes in. These luxury 22-seater buses charge only R10 per trip, and can be found at Sandton Station, Marlboro Station, Hatfield Station and Centurion Station. The Gautrain Midibuses travel to some of the city’s most popular destinations – for example, the Gautrain Midibus at the Sandton Station travels to Montecasino, Joburg’s top entertainment destination. Like the Gautrain Buses, the Gautrain Midibuses are also linked to train times. Tickets for the Gautrain Midibus can conveniently be purchased at the Midibus Kiosk.

Together, the Gautrain Bus and Gautrain Midibus ensure that all Gautrain users get to their final destinations safely and timeously. 1 www.gautrain.co.za E @gautrain D @thegautrain Q @thegautrain Hello Joburg • November 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

On 16 May 2019, Saray Khumalo made history when she became the first black African female to summit Mount Everest. Saray is also a philanthropist, motivational speaker, business executive at Momentum Multiply and one of the most inspiring people we’ve ever met. We chatted to her about her time on Everest and what’s next.

Can you describe the feeling when you got to the top? It was such a humbling feeling and very emotional. I remember thinking about my mother saying the sky is the limit, but I was thinking the sky is below me ... I can see the clouds below me. The moment is unfortunately cut short by the realisation that the summit is halfway, and you still need to go back down. When I started going down, I looked back and had a bit of FOMO. Realising that I was the first black African female on the summit, I asked myself if I’d seen everything. I didn’t think it was going to be such a big thing, so it was scary when I got back and saw that the whole country was talking about it, but what a privilege! Other people who look like me now know that they can do it. Whether you’re black, white or another race, anything is possible if you believe. Was there ever a point when you thought you weren’t going to summit? This was my fourth attempt to Summit Everest. In 2017 during my third attempt, there was a time when I almost gave up – I was 99 metres from the top but had to be rescued due to injury. It was the right decision because if I didn’t make that decision, I probably wouldn’t be here. But for the first time, I also thought that perhaps all the people who said it’s not for me, and that no black woman has done it before, were right. I think that was the lowest point for me. How did you overcome that? I’m actually calling it ‘failing forward’ now. Life will throw curve balls at you and it’s only a failure when you decide it is. If we always let our environment or other people dictate what success and failure looks like, we’ll always be second place. In 2017, I got further than I did before, so I had to view that as a success.

64

SARAY KHUMALO

Hello Joburg • November 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

What’s a typical day like on Everest? It depends. I did a lot of reading and journaling. You share stories, alk to people, play cards ... that’s big. Then when you get to Everest basecamp, you do a lot of acclimatisation hikes to keep fit, but it also takes a lot of patience to wait for the weather window. There aren’t many days that you actually climb. You recently won gsport Woman of the Year Award. What was that experience like? That was a humbling moment. It was such a pat on the shoulder to say that no matter how small the sport is that you’re doing, the world is watching you. The theme was no apology for my success and it’s about us women celebrating each other because we’ve worked hard and have the right to celebrate. If I look at myself, I accept accountability for the times I didn’t summit, so why shouldn’t I celebrate the summit? What’s next for you? I’m taking a sabbatical and finally being paid to climb, which is blessing. Momentum has sponsored the rest of the Grand Slam, which is the seven highest peaks around the continents. Everest was number four, so it’s for me to do the three and the North and South Pole. There are only 67 people in the world that have done that and no African females, so it’s a good challenge to have. More importantly, it’s another chance to make a difference. It’s linked to my charity, Summits with a Purpose, which I use to identify other charities to donate to. 1 www.saraykhumalo.com E @sarayKhumaloSpeaker D @saraykhumalo Q @saraykhumalo
