ugust is one of my favourite months… the weather is unpredictable and the end of the year is looming. More importantly, National Women’s Day is in August, and that’s a day I take quite seriously. If you’re a regular reader of this page, you’ll know that my siblings and I were raised by a single mum. Life has kicked her down numerous times, but she continues to pick herself up, dust herself off and come out swinging. When I think of ‘powerful women’, many examples come to mind - but my mother is at the forefront. She is a survivor, a fighter… she is Wonder Woman. And she has raised an Amazonian warrior. We’ve tried to dedicate our August issue to powerful woman across the globe, and we’ve featured a few influential women that reside right here in Jozi. We spent seven minutes with the incredibly stylish, oh-so-influential Luyanda Madonia, so be sure to flip to the back page and read our interview with her. Beauty and brains come together in our small feature on the gorgeous Lerato Malatjie, who is our reigning Miss Regal International South Africa. Certainly not least, highlighted in our People of Joburg column is the sensational vocalist Ashlinn Gray. This singer, songwriter, actress and motivational speaker – although young – is well on her way to becoming an internationally recognized artist. Our beauty section is an absolute treat this month… we’ve sussed out three fabulous spas you must visit for the ultimate pamper session, and each of them has heavenly products to stock up on. n the quiet suburb of Bedfordview lies a strip of old and new restaurants, filled with locals. Van Buuren street has transformed into a precinct, popular thanks to various specialist eateries, such as the 17-year-old Yamatsuki Restaurant! JUNGLE SUSHI AND TEPPANYAKI IS THE GO-TO FOR GREAT SUSHI You may walk past while looking for it, because as usual, we South Africans were looking for a modern designed, specialist restaurant that has someone waiting by the door to usher us in. Though the décor is simplistic, the food here is made fresh using traditional methods. Did we mention that this is all done in front of you? The fan favourite is the salmon roses and prawn teppanyanki, but the prawns were so good, we bought more servings to go! The plan was not to cook the next day but, those yummy creatures didn’t survive the night. Like many places in the area, Yamtsuki’s regulars are locals, and you realise as you walk in how beautiful the atmosphere is, with everyone greeting, laughing and smiling. Launched for the first time on flights between Amsterdam and Johannesburg on 1 July 2017, KLM introduced a new World Business Class inflight service called ‘Anytime for you’.

LM Royal Dutch Airlines was founded on 7 October, 1919 to serve the Netherlands and its colonies. Today, it is the oldest airline still operating under its original name. KLM has been part of the Air France KLM group since the merger in 2004.

‘Anytime for you’ offers KLM World Business Class passengers the possibility of ordering meals of their choice during their flight to and from Johannesburg. These delicious meals will be prepared on board, and served restaurant style. The new service aims to give passengers a wider choice and a greater sense of control. ‘Anytime for you’ offers passengers a number of fantastic options… Choice and control KLM aims to offer its passengers an excellent travel experience on every journey. This also means the possibility of responding to personal preferences and taking biorhythms into account.

With ‘Anytime for you’, KLM aims to meet travellers’ individual wishes. Extra dishes! Passengers are presented with the divine menu shortly after take-off. This menu contains the regular three-course menu and the ‘Anytime for you’ menu – which offers a choice of eight different dishes: cold and hot, savoury and sweet, healthy and a ‘naughty treat’. Passengers can choose the regular three-course menu, or skip this option entirely if they wish. In both cases, they may select from the ‘Anytime for you’ menu after the three-course menu. Once a selection from the ‘Anytime for you’ menu has been made, it can be prepared and served at any time the passenger wants during the flight - with no extra cost! A memorable experience With the ‘Anytime for you’ on-board service, KLM aim to give their passengers a unique restaurant-style experience. The extra care and attention provided by KLM’s cabin crew make this a personal and flexible product. Two extra pamper moments Two extra service moments have been introduced with ‘Anytime for you’… passengers are offered a small appetizer when they come on board, and the cabin staff will serve a healthy energy-boosting drink just before landing. The ‘Anytime for you’ service concept will be phased in on various flights. Decked out in red and grey, with what look like giant cogs used as chandeliers, the restaurant fits right into the 1 Fox venue.

We highly recommend you order a plate from each one. We started with the Deep-Fried Potatoes with a seaweed emulsion, which will shock your taste buds. The wedges are perfectly crisp and seasoned, while the emulsion is creamy and full of flavor, with a slight smoky aftertaste. We had to stop ourselves from scooping it out with our fingers.

The dressing packs quite a punch, but the combination of the peanut, pork and butternut flavours are an absolute delight – and the cucumber is a refreshing break from the powerful dressing. Our dish of the day had to be the picture perfect Crumbed Line Caught Chokka. It’s served with kimchi, burnt lime and a garlic

emulsion, but it’s the burnt lime that we couldn’t get enough of. It’s the most unexpected flavor… so powerful, so punchy – it knocks your socks right off. You’ve got to try this one at least once! he first thing you’ll notice about Justine other than her awesome trademark braids - is her age. Make no mistake, this young up and comer has worked at some of the top restaurants in Joburg, and has an enviable resume to her name already. Justine heads up the kitchen at Lima Tapas Bar in Montecasino (as well as its sister restaurant Milk and Honey, also in Montecasino). Lima has just celebrated its first birthday, and has become known on the foodie scene as a ‘must try’ dining experience, and for good reason! An artful blend of South American fusion foods… think nacho’s, espetada and sushi all on one menu. Due to the mix of cultures in South America, this amazing amalgamation of cultures offers so much for Justine, and the kitchen team at Lima’s to play with. Growing up in East London, Justine’s childhood memories are steeped in food - preparing it and sharing family meals with her extended family over the weekends. It was while she was studying to be an accountant at the University of Johannesburg that she realised number crunching wasn’t for her.

Not knowing what to do next, she took some time off to travel around South Africa and get some clarity. Hello Joburg • August 2017 • Hellojoburg.co.za

It was upon her return to Joburg that she headed off to study at Capsicum in Sunninghill. 18 months later, she took her first training position at The Maslow Hotel, followed by a stint at Four Seasons the Westcliff. Next stop was DW Eleven-13, and it was here that her talent was recognised. Before she knew what was happening, she found herself part of the Lima’s team. So how on earth does she manage to juggle two kitchens at once? With a big laugh, she admits that it’s a labour of love, but if it’s your true passion, it’s no issue. She also jokingly adds that she’s going to get a Segway to zoom between the two! We kind of love that idea! Justine loves the pressure and the rush of a busy kitchen. “All these people are here to eat my food. It’s show time now! When the pass is pumping and I’m plating up, I know that I have to deliver perfectly, and I love that,” she says with a grin.

lenda’s love affair with food began between the pages of a magazine in the 1970’s, with her mother’s monthly delivery of Gourmet magazine from the United States. She carried this passion until she opened her chic, French-styled restaurant and bakery, The Patisserie in Illovo, followed by her seasonal eclectic eatery, Glenda’s in Hyde Park. She spent two years travelling the world and training in enviable establishments, including ‘The Red Rooster’ in New York, to the acclaimed ‘Petersham Nursery’ and the internationally renowned ‘River Café’ in London. She also trained at the ‘Four Seasons’ Michelin starred restaurant in Berlin.

Inspired by her father (who isn’t in the industry, but has a palpable passion for food), Glenda loves to bounce her ideas off a handful of cooks in London. She holds their opinions close to her heart, as they’re on the same page, and share her endeavors in innovation when it comes to eating. From her very first preparation, Glenda has had a love and respect for a host of incredible women in the industry, including Ruth Rogers of the iconic British Italian restaurant, The River Café. Ruth also uses fresh, seasonal elements to produce magic on her menu. Glenda would love to eat a plate prepared by April Bloomfield of Spotted Pig, who shares her philosophy and has written ‘A girl and her greens - heart meals from the garden’ as well as ‘A girl and her pig’. Glenda believes that women have a special skill of bringing a sense of calmness to the kitchen, but are challenged by the longterm investment of being a restaurateur when it comes to growing a family.

he much-loved, authentically African Moyo Zoo Lake has introduced the Moyo Budgetarian Buffet. We don’t habitually promote buffet-style dining, but this is an exception, because the quality of food is excellent!

The selection is impressive (especially for vegetarians), has great value for money, and each dish is simply delicious. The sweet potato bake is rich and wholesome, the peri-peri chicken liver pot is packed with flavour and the venison potjie is to-die-for. The restaurant is a little hideout nestled under the trees, overlooking the water. It’s relaxing listening to the sounds of live music and quacking ducks. ‘Winter’ in Jozi means we usually have beautiful sunshine, so this makes an ideal spot for the family!

Breakfast: Expect heavenly flapjacks, waffles and cereals like muesli, all bran flakes and putu pap. There’s a selection of Indezi cheese with melba toast and bread, and freshly made muffins with fresh fruit. On the hot side, there’s succulent streaky bacon, lamb sausages and peri-peri chicken livers for the carnivores. For vegetarians, there are spicy baked beans and eggs of your choice. Lunch: Expect hot and cold starters, a selection of salads, and a vast array of sides. Tagines and potjies, Shisa nyama, and the most fabulous live cooking station. Our fave was the seared calamari sautéed with olives, broccoli and garlic, drizzled with lemony harissa butter. Luxurious desserts include divine banoffee, traditional Koeksisters, and bread and butter pudding.

How it’s made: Comprising of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 15% Petit Verdot and 10% Malbec, with the grapes vinified separately. After hand-sorting at the cellar, the fruit is fermented on the skins in open fermenters and stainless-steel tanks. Extended skin contact is allowed after alcoholic fermentation for greater intensity of colour and flavour. The wine is matured for 18 months in 300-litre first-, second-, and third-fill French oak barrels.

Flavours: Nederburg’s The Brew Master Bordeaux-style blend 2014 is described by cellar-master, Andrea Freeborough as full-bodied, classic and complex. It has concentrated flavours of blackcurrant, mulberry, dark chocolate, mocha, cigar box, and a hint of vanilla spice.

South Africa has some top contenders for streaming, but there are a few others coming up through the ranks. Here are our top picks…

NETFLIX SA Netflix is the global leader in streaming video, but it’s limited in SA compared to the rest of the world. However, the catch-up is happening fast, with more content being added to the rosters. It ranges from R100 to R200 per month (in light of exchange rates and the 3 different packages). SHOWMAX When Netflix hit our shores, Showmax had already started to pave the way for video services, and still retain most of the rights to major TV Shows in SA. Showmax offers a two-week free trial period, and charge a R99/month subscription fee, so they’re lightest on the pocket. 5 www.showmax.com AMAZON PRIME VIDEO Amazon Prime will cost you $5.99 per month, but the first 6 months will only cost $2.99. The content on Amazon Prime isn’t as extensive as Netflix or Showmax, but they’re heading in the right direction and have originals like The Grand Tour and Sneaky Pete (which we love!). DEOD (DIGITAL ENTERTAINMENT ON DEMAND) DEOD is fairly new and has a different approach, offering their own TV channels alongside movies and TV shows, such as BBC News and Bloomberg. The service also carries a few ‘videocasts’, such as getting highlights of the ICC Champions Trophy or ATP tennis, and more. It’s a great choice if you don’t have DSTV, but the selection of TV shows and movies isn’t in competition with Showmax and Netflix yet. 5 www.deod.tv ITUNES AND GOOGLE PLAY These services come pretty much standard on their respective iOS and Android devices, and offer a smaller experience to streaming and video on demand. iOS has no TV Shows in the SA store yet, but the library is bigger than Google Play. Get dropped off on Bree street and take a walk, stopping at bars (you must try the Orphanage), artisanal eateries, juice bars and little boutique stores. You’ll stumble along a few hidden gems. Bike, run or stroll along the promenade. You’ll find some of the best views in the city, and don’t forget to stop for a selfie and an ice cream close to the Sea Point public swimming pool.

Hop on (and off) the Red City Bus. We recommend taking the sunset tour, which stops off on top of Signal Hill. It’s one of the most beautiful ways to see the city at dusk.

What does Women’s Month mean to you?

As a black woman, it means the struggle is still very real. It means there’s so much more to do, and it starts with me. The fight isn’t over – ‘A luta continua’.

Name three women, dead or alive, who motivate you.

My mother, Velile Sithole, takes positions 1 and 2. She is the ultimate boss lady. Number 3… All the black women on earth that fight the good fight for the human race everyday motivate me.

What makes a successful youtuber?

Being consistent, and collaborating with other Youtubers to get more exposure on their platforms. Being authentic, recognizing your voice and sticking to it.

What advice would you give to your 15-year-old self?

Save, save, save! The habit of saving money should be instilled at very early age. It should be part of your lifestyle. It’s hard to learn that as an adult. Oh, and girl, you are BEAUTIFUL!
