September is finally the start of spring and the beginning of a metamorphosis that the city of Pretoria goes through. I think we can all agree that Pretoria is truly one of South Africa’s most beautiful cities, with its majestic hills and natural bushveld, to stunning views from the top of Groenkloof Nature Reserve. However, I believe I’m not alone when I say that the city is looking a little brown, dry and dusty, and I can’t wait for the stunning jacaranda trees to come to life! What better way to experience the natural splendour of this city then to visit one of its many tree-lined suburbs. This month we showcase Brooklyn as our recommended destination, with a wide selection of top restaurants, malls, hotels and host to the cities leading weekend market, there is truly something for everyone! Check out pages 10 and 11 for our top tips of where to dine and shop in Brooklyn this month.

Step into spring with Bianca’s Lust List on page 14 and because spring is all about colour, especially in the city of Tshwane, this month’s list focuses on all shades of the rainbow. Whether it’s discovering a fresh new sent or a must-have pop of colour, Bianca’s got you covered. Hello Pretoria • September 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

If you’re looking for a new perspective on life, then we highly recommend a visit to the Lion and Cheetah Sanctuary in Cullinan. The sanctuary is home to a number of animals, including lions, cheetah, hyenas, genets, horses and different species of antelope. Accommodation and experience packages are also available if you’re planning a weekend visit. Check out page 23 for our full review on this one of a kind haven for the King of Africa. Now I know that Pretoria has an abundance of activities and experiences to keep you busy all month, however, if you’re looking for a change of scenery then you must consider a trip to our neighbour up north, Zanzibar. On pages 28 through 31 we take you on an unforgettable journey through one of the continent’s most culturally diverse islands where if you can’t relax and unwind, then heaven help you! The Hello Pretoria website will be launching on 1 September 2018 so please feel free to browse the site for more interesting and exciting things to do in the city. Ané Dry

Au pair and student, Ané Dry, is no newbie to Pretoria and its spells. From its lovely jacarandas that can steal even the toughest farmer’s heart to The Village’s restaurant-filled streets – she falls in love with the city repeatedly. She loves the fact that everything is so close to each other. “It is easy to organise a quick get together or two.” It’s also a bargain to be able to experience big concerts like Afrikaans is Groot in top-class facilities like the Sun Arena. 1 www.suninternational.com/time-square Spring holds a whole new list of activities that she looks forward to. To dine at one of The Village’s restaurants and enjoy the view of its fairy light-lined streets is one of the things she can’t wait to do. She is also excited about picnics at the National Botanical Garden and its Wednesday night trail runs where you get to run between its waterfalls. 1 www.sanbi.org/gardens/pretoria When it comes to keeping kids busy, she knows best. Her suggestions for families include The Big Red Barn, where kids can enjoy tractor rides, ziplining, trampolines and jungle gyms between the trees, Willow Feather Farm where kids can feed the farm animals at only R20 and The Fun Room in Waterkloof – a perfect morning out where mom can have coffee with friends while the kids keep themselves busy on the imported playground equipment. 1 www.thebigredbarn.co.za 1 www.willowfeather.co.za 1 www.thefunroom.co.za

The beautiful gardens and buildings, the friendly staff and the wide variety of spa facilities make it the best place to escape to.” 1 www.kievitskroon.co.za For someone staying at home over the weekend, she suggests a hike at Wolwespruit. Sundowners at The Summit Grill and Skybar is another must. You may not have an ocean view, but Pretoria’s lights are just as intriguing, especially from a lilo in their pool. Take a break in Brooklyn A

s one of the older suburbs of the Jacaranda City, Brooklyn has a lot of well-established schools, churches, houses and malls. Brooklyn Mall was opened in 1989 and still attracts locals and visitors with exciting events and some of the city’s best shops. Pretoria Boys High is another deep-rooted facility in the vicinity, founded in 1901. Its neoclassical main school buildings are quite spectacular; its red bricks comfortably maintaining its provincial heritage status. The Brooklyn neighbourhood is one of the few that boasts lovely, spacious properties. Another add-on is off course the area’s easy access to main roads and due to the fact that it is an older, established neighbourhood, the bigger trees and lush plant life gives it a peaceful character that not many people can say no to.

Turn ’n Tender A CALL FOR CELEBRATION

Birthday celebrations are always a challenge, especially when you’ve got little time. When you’re not in the mood for turning 31, it’s even more of a challenge. Turn ’n Tender, however, has the perfect solution.

Since 1977 the Turn ’n Tender brand, opened by four brothers in Johannesburg, has grown to be known as one of the best steakhouses in the country. It is evident in their menu that they have a love for great steak and a taste for good wine. Their slogan reads: “Where stories become legends” and it is their mission to be the place where people make special memories.

16

What started out as an informal birthday lunch as a family ended up being a memorable experience – a story we’ve already shared with a number of friends. The Turn ’n Tender team has clearly mastered the art Hello Pretoria • September 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

of balance within the restaurant, which is not always as easy as it may seem. Creating a comfortable, inviting atmosphere combined with a well-planned menu and good service it is often quite a challenge, with one of these frequently taking priority above the others, but Turn ’n Tender juggles these priorities well. Their menu is typically South African, with local dishes like marrow bones and lamb potjie standing out as some of the obvious favourites.

They also cater for visitors around the globe with their speciality steaks, giving it an interesting twist with different flavours. Their Argentinian steak, for instance, comes with chimichurri (onion, red pepper, garlic, chilli, parsley, white wine vinegar, olive oil and lemon juice) and their Greek steak is served with rosemary, oregano butter and roasted garlic. The steak for two, which came on a properly heated, sizzling skillet, was perfectly prepared. With the option of two sauces and two sides,

it was difficult to decide, but we went for the mushroom and feta sauce, gorgonzola sauce, stir-fried vegetables and fries. One thing is certain: when you say you want your steak medium, that is exactly what you’ll get. The Turn ’n Tender steakhouse is fitted out with rustic tiles and lovely wooden floors, with bronze fittings and stylish lighting adding to the atmosphere and its large window, allows for great people watching opportunities. The waiters are friendly and attentive and surprisingly good with children, accommodating us at a comfortable table with a baby chair and practising patience with the little one regularly dropping toys on the floor! There is always that one restaurant you’d refer friends to when they ask for recommendations for birthday celebrations, corporate lunches or catching up with friends. Turn ’n Tender at Loftus Park is exactly that. 416 Kirkness St, Arcadia m 010 020 8550 1 www.turnntender.co.za

Friedland says: “When dealing with animals, there is always a risk.” This is one of the reasons why visitors can only interact with mongoose and cheetah from up close at the sanctuary. The other animals can be viewed from a game vehicle. Watching the game ranger get off from the vehicle in the lion enclosure,

interacting with the lions as if he were one of the pride, is invigorating to say the least. The sanctuary boasts a lovely restaurant that offers a threecourse meal to visitors who have booked. Overseas visitors seem to enjoy the sanctuary tremendously, finding value in both the affordable accommodation and the educational experience. Accommodation and experience packages are tailor made according to your preferences, with the accommodation packages, starting at R950 per person, including all meals and interactions with the animals. The sanctuary encourages guests to make their requests and they then set up the correct package and excursions accordingly. This includes the option of enjoying the sanctuary's offerings on horseback.

With millennials being the most educated and culturally diverse generation, it’s only natural that their expectations of Pretoria’s nightlife wouldn’t be the norm. They require out of the box ideas and experiences and they definitely don’t settle for anything subpar.

Millennials Do It Better A Progressive Take on Pretoria’s Nightlife.

Hello Pretoria • September 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

Many millennials prefer enjoying game nights with drinks at home rather than going to a club where they need to queue just to be pushed around on the dancefloor. Uber Eats makes an evening like this very convenient with the option of buying your food online and having it delivered at your door. Numerous Pretoria restaurants are listed on the Uber Eats app, including eateries in Brooklyn, Hatfield, Groenkloof and Waterkloof. For a game night out, Smaak Restaurant hosts Cards Against Humanity on Tuesday evenings with beer and shooter prizes – an evening where you get to be sarcastic without being judged. Quiz nights are also becoming more popular. Try the quiz evening at Lucit Restaurant and Theatre in Rietondale on 27 September from 18:00. 1 www.smaakbydough.com 1 www.lucit.co.za Lucky Rodrigo is seen as Pretoria’s resident bar and has been a favourite since the closing down of Hatfield Square. With the odd vinyl market and plants hanging from the ceiling, they’ve caught the millennials’ drift and are running with it. With spring in the air, you’ll be sure to find millennials anywhere near

inflatable swans in pools, cocktails with a twist and bars with views. Places like Summit Grill and Skybar are definitely right up their alley. 1 www.luckyrodrigo.co.za 1 www.summitgrill.co.za The millennial generation is brilliant at sniffing out sales and specials. They particularly enjoy MooMoo Brooklyn for their live entertainment on Sundays between 16:30 and 19:00 and Menlyn’s buy one get one free option on their wines by the glass. They move with the trends and with Menlyn Maine being one of the latest editions to the jacaranda city, this is where you’ll find them hanging out. here’s often a blurred representation of who millennials actually are. There’s the literal definition of anyone who was born between 1980 and 2000, but there’s also millennial-minded people that are influenced by technology, digital communication and social media engagement. Millennials tend to buy from brands that are socially and environmentally conscious, they prefer personalised engagement and are eager to learn. They go to events and visit destinations that are worth sharing with their social media following. They aren’t great at saving and rather invest their money in themselves by means of experiences. Lower salaries and higher rent also have an impact on their tight budgets, but for some reason millennials seem to do things better. They love music festivals with a twist, value micro-influencers’ opinions and even with artificial intelligence hanging over our heads, they embrace being human. This idea of ‘embracing being human’ involves going back to basics – from taking on old-school game nights to buying organic food, it’s all about living life to its fullest.

arts&culture Jacarandas The Art of Painting

Pretoria artist, Neil Moss, shines some light on the subject of painting jacaranda trees. He offers art courses and art classes in Brooklyn, one of the neighbourhoods in Pretoria with some of the most beautiful streets to perfectly capture the jacarandas in bloom – either on camera or on canvas. According to him, there are a couple of things you need to understand before you can start painting. Colour is one of these things with jacaranda purple being a very difficult colour to mix. He suggests finding someone who can explain the process of mixing colours to you before you kick off the process of painting because when looking at a jacaranda tree in bloom, it’s filled with numerous hues of purple. The second very important thing to understand is perspective. It is important to know when a line goes up and when it goes down. Thirdly, Moss says you need to be able to observe. But, you can’t observe if you don’t know how colour and perspective work.

26

In his workshops, which are normally either one or two-day workshop, you’re not only Hello Pretoria • September 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

given the opportunity to express your creativity, you also learn something new. In his one-day jacaranda painting workshop, Moss explains colour, perspective and observation in detail and he demonstrates how to paint jacarandas in the best way possible. You’ll also be able to finish your own jacaranda painting in one day – the perfect start to the jacaranda season! Moss provides everything needed for the day, including the paint, paintbrushes and lunch is catered for by his wife, Mary. Mixing the right colours for your creation is quite the challenge. Moss says it is better to start off with acrylic paint if you’re a beginner, as it is water based and dries easily. He also teaches his art students how to lay out the perfect palette. Painting is not his only forte. Complementing

his passion for art, he also does framing, so you can choose a frame for your work right then and there. For Moss, it is Pretoria’s perfect weather and the fact that there are so many jacarandas in the city that makes it worth painting. He says it’s interesting to see how the colours of the trees are highlighted especially when it is cloudy. “There is no other city with jacarandas like ours,” he says.

anzibar’s uniqueness has many facets and two of them, in particular, are its cuisine and culture. JEWEL OF TANZANIA 28

ZANZIBAR A delicious destination Hello Pretoria • September 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

This is what we like to refer to as barefoot luxury. In the finest arc of the Zanzibar Island lies this exquisite hotel. As the scarlet rays from the sunset begin to deepen and you arrive at this maritime oasis, you’ll instantly be swept off your feet. It is everything the website promises and more, your expectations will be met, and we have no doubt you will want to return as much as we did. Arriving at this exclusive location with all-encompassing views of the striking ocean, you’ll soon realize why Zanzibar has reached the top of everyone’s “if only list.” The hotel boasts nine villas, all abundantly spacious, alike in size and design, and all with breathtaking views. Because the hotel is situated on top of a cliff, you’ll gingerly prowl the area as you marvel at the plump hillsides. Each villa is named after an animal, in Swahili, and so Pweza the octopus was our residence - a sanctuary beyond measure, with cascading ceilings, warm grey tones and furnishings contrasting the exterior landscape and a private plunge pool. Plus, we were extremely pleased to discover that the hotel is extremely serious about creating a plastic-free zone. They use only paper straws and you will not find bottled water anywhere in the hotel, except in the rooms. There are moments when a lie in is mandatory, but this is not the place. We recommend setting the alarm for 6:00am, brewing a warm cuppa and relishing in the mornings sunrise as the welcoming baboons swing from the palm trees. Then put on your sneakers and head to their bountiful vegetable and fruit garden and try fit in a run through the rolling banana fields. They have created this inspiring 1km flat track, which caters to your every whim and wheeze. It is an extraordinary adventure and as you run past the chicken coup you’ll feel deeply conjugated to Zanzibar and all its glory. As time thickens so does the humidity and so do the hunger pangs. Time for breakfast and yes you guessed it, overlooking the awe-inspiring landscape of the white bleached beaches and cobalt blue waters. Breakfast is a culinary journey of the juiciest fresh fruit, freshly baked croissants, eggs any way you choose and a rich cup of caffeine to go with it. If none of these tickles your tastebuds, request anything you like, your wish is their command. The staff and chef will ensure each meal and every bite is just as you like it. Dinner is a five-course adventure with the freshest seafood, caught the very same day; grilled red snapper enhanced with fresh herbs, smoked carrot coulis and vegetable millefeuille, it’s simply orgasmic. And whilst your taste buds are tingling so are your ears because you’ll enjoy traditional Taarab music, started by a sultan in 1870 and known as the soul of Zanzibar. Influenced with musical traditions of the African Great Lakes, North Africa, The Middle East and the Indian subcontinent. This unique resort is exactly how life would be if the sultans never left the island. Set in another realm and certainly allowing for the ideal escape for ordinary mundane city life. You are transported to a world where smoking shisha is routine, bathing in sultan baths is commonplace and indulging in the five-star Frangipani spa (with incomparable therapists from Bali, Thailand and India) becomes mandatory. In the reception area sits traditional, Swahili and Arabic architecture, serenaded by classical pieces, luxury woods and brass lanterns. The interior is exotic and unfamiliar; it’s a fusion of Arabic, Swahili and Indian design transforming and elevating your vacation the moment you arrive. It is clear that the overall intent is tranquillity, especially in all the villa styles. There are thirty villas with options of an oceanfront villa, a sultan villa and a garden view villa, all with the choice of one or two bedrooms, ideal for a family getaway or a romantic escape. The sultan’s lounge bed, dramatic arches and the plunge pool are highlights and so is the freestanding bath with deluxe products that they create themselves. It would be easy to think the Baraza Resort and Spa is just another commercial allinclusive resort, but it is not. It is so much more. Days are spent in luxury, alongside stellar service and the most superb dining with an offering of three restaurants. There is an adult pool to dip into after your spa experience as well as another pool in the main area, a beachfront view, daily hatha yoga classes, sweet-smelling cocktails at Hova Bar, cooking demonstrations, Swahili bands playing in the background, beach bike rides and high tea served daily in the tea lounge. Oh, did we mention they have their own watersports centre and all activities (not motorised) are included? Also, just 300m from the resort is the water club where you can learn to sail or kite surf.

Baraza Resort and Spa However, the cream of the crop has to be the seaside luncheon. In the afternoon we were treated to a self-indulgent three-course lunch, under the palm trees, beside the surging waters, in fact, you couldn’t possibly get closer to the sea. With dishes that included crab and avocado salad, coconut three ways; panna cotta, Crème Brule and freshly made ice cream. The grand finale though, had to be the grilled cigal dish and fish fillet with Creole sauce, dauphin potato and crisp vegetables. cigal is of the lobster family and famous in Zanzibar, it goes down sleekly with a glass of chenin. ‘Jambo’ (hello) and ‘asante sana’ (thank you) are the first words you’ll hear upon entering this picturesque location. They create the paradise and you choose the dream. We highly recommend your imagination whisks you off to visit this hotel. Cushioned on this tropical island that is Zanzibar, this hotel is on top of the seashore with wavering banks of rich soft sands. This is one of the most dynamic and serene parts of the island. During the winter months, the tide stays hidden until the afternoon, signifying the ability to walk on water and search for starfish, ankle-deep. Look up in any direction towards the sky ending and the raw environment will hypnotize you.

If you’re a family, you’ll also appreciate the weekly entertainment schedule. Expect a fiesta with live bands playing, mythological acrobatics, bongo flavour dances and hong-tied drum Ngoma shows. There is even a piano bar, coconut weaving, beach volleyball and so much more. Nowhere is the concept of balance more understood than here, peaceful adult time is secured perfectly with the kids being whisked away and entertained. There are also combat yoga classes on offer for adults twice a week or why not try a tae-bo class with coach Rene. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy then opt for a snorkel or a dive at one of the thirty sites (for divers at all levels), or even be daring and try a starry night-dive.

The hotel boasts nine restaurants and bars which means when you book your week holiday, you will be spoiled for choice, especially if you opt for the all-inclusive package. When we first thought about all-inclusive it seemed rather gluttonous yet somewhat thrilling and after experiencing it, we highly recommend it. You can eat at a new restaurant and delve into a new country and their cuisine every evening. The beach bars, which serve a casual style luncheon on the beach, are charming. We loved the Sakura Sushi Bar where you can make your very own traditional Japanese noodle dish and snack on some sashimi. Or why not taste their coconut crusted prawns or green papaya salad or their legendary seared tuna niçoise salad with a frothy sweet passion vinaigrette. A 10/10 dining experience. The Rock Restaurant Zanzibar It is unforgivable to visit Zanzibar and not visit the Rock, especially as it is known as the worlds most acclaimed restaurant. Firstly, you need a selfie in front of it, secondly, it is the coolest location suspended on the Indian Ocean and thirdly you should go when the tide is high because the only way there is via boat. It’s a cherished experience, definitely not to be missed. So, while you’re downing a traditional Dawa cocktail (local Konyagi gin, honey, tonic and water) don’t forget you’re on a floating restaurant. Soak Up the Sun in

Jozi this Spring

As temperatures rise we can’t help but feel a certain kind of energy in the air – so get out, go on an adventure and explore your soon to be new favourite spots.

34

From restaurants boasting all new and improved spring menus to activities in the sun and nightlife that isn’t centered around finding a spot with a fireplace, there is countless reason to visit the city this September. Here’s a couple of our top-rated suggestions. Hello Pretoria • September 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

We think that a restaurant with outdoor seating is a must while on a mission to fully embrace the season, that’s why this month we’re hitting on Munch Café in Bryanston with its charming location that’s quite literally a plant lovers heaven. 44 Stanley, in general, is the perfect spot to visit for a leisurely afternoon stroll and a browse through artisanal stores, but we suggest you soak up the sun at Salvation Café for the perfect brunch or light lunch. Why waste your time (and the fresh air) in a crowded shopping mall when you can visit one of Joburg’s many food, craft and farmers markets? Try the Jozi Real Food Market for all your pantry essentials or make a beeline to the Linden Market to score the perfect vintage gem or retro homeware piece.

Not to brag or anything, but Johannesburg is notorious for some of the most beautiful sunsets in Gauteng, so why not breath in its beauty at some of the trendiest skybar’s the city has to offer. Sip on a refreshing fruity drink, listen to some cool beats and show off the beginning of your brand-new tan at the San Deck in Sandton or Level Four Champagne Bar in Rosebank. We also have some killer cultural affairs on offer that are, in our opinion, unrivalled. Take a day trip to Arts on Main in Maboneng, a truly unique Jozi experience that locals can’t get enough of to support some of Johannesburg’s best local artists. Don’t leave without taking that famous Instagram picture.

lowers are blooming, birds are chirping, and we just can’t get enough of that feel- good spring feeling. Yes, this month we have a little skip in our step and although you may be eager to enjoy the jacarandas and warm weather from the comfort of your own backyard we urge you to get out, take a day trip and embrace spring in Jozi.

PAINT, TRENDS AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN Meet Yolande Terblanche From Granny B’s Old Fashioned Paint

36

Chalk paint is used to create a chalky or aged appearance adding a unique touch to furniture, walls and other interior items. Paint containing calcium carbonate (chalk) has been used for hundreds of years and has been around way longer than just the last 30 years. But, there’s more to it than just that. The paint is formulated to have incredible adhesion properties. It can be applied to just about any surface with very little and often no pre-preparation or sanding required and it works well on wood, cement, plastic, glass, melamine and even fabric. An interesting fact that you might not know (because we certainly didn’t) was that when you use the Granny B’s brand of chalk-finish paints and sealers on your baby’s furniture, your kitchen or around your pets, you can be sure it’s safe, “Its water based and is also gentle on the skin as well as the environment.” Says Yolande. Hello Pretoria • September 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

Spicing up your space during any time of the year can be a bit intimidating, so Yolande offers some advice: Trends for spring? Bold colours for walls and furniture, bling’d up dark wood furniture with a hint of Scandinavian, artisanal handmade furniture, tropical prints with a mixture of lush and energising greens, brass furniture and accessories like mirrors and side tables and, of course, marble. What’s the best way to prepare a room for painting? Once you have decided on a theme or colour palette, you can plan the rest of the furniture and accessories around that. Our colour range caters for all types of pallets and we encourage the mixing of colours which is great for ombre’s. Make sure that your theme is unique to your own style. What is your advice for adding colour to a room? Paint one wall in the room a contrasting colour, add some green or flowering plants or plants with lots of foliage to bring some personality to your room. Adding a cheerful lamp or colourful lampshade will add a touch of interest. A colourful rug under a chair or table always adds a nice touch and if you have a large bare wall add a mirror and paint the frame a bright colour. Here at HJ we believe that your living space has a direct impact on your mood. So, since spring has blessed us with its warm cheery presence, why not amp up your space to match. Visit Granny B’s website at 1www.grannyb.co.za to find a stockist near you or conveniently shop online and have your order delivered to your front door.

ranny B’s Old Fashioned Paint is a family owned and operated business, established in mid-2015, that has grown to become the leading locally founded chalk-finish paint product brand in South Africa. They have grown to over 200 stockists across Southern Arica and now service South African, Namibian, Zimbabwean and Zambian markets with an ever growing interest from countries as far flung as Australia. Granny B’s wanted to make their product available to everyone who had an artistic urge or simply wanted to re-love ageing furniture, or even take up upcycling as a hobby. Their product would suit beginners, DIY enthusiasts or even seasoned furniture painters and decorators. And so their story began…we sat down with Yolande Terblanche to pick her brain about everything from paint to all things interior.

Tell us a little bit about your new movie? The Recce is a war story, actual war as well as hearts at war. 1981 - RECCE, Henk Viljoen, is wrongfully declared KIA behind enemy lines. Abandoned by his superiors; it’s a race for survival as he navigates his way through the treacherous Angolan war zone in an effort to make his way home to his loved ones. I play the role of Nicola Viljoen (Henk's wife) a strong woman, with nothing but love for her husband and disdain for the war. Your favourite thing about being on set? The people I get to meet and share moments and emotions with, it will forever only be that group of people that really know what we put ourselves through, and I find that beautiful. What are three words you would use to describe yourself? Passionate, clumsy, spontaneous.   What item can’t you leave the house without? House keys... being locked out of your house is not fun.

Your dream holiday destination? Turkey. I have a million, but for now, I’ll say Turkey. What’s your favourite spot to hang out in Pretoria? Die Blou Hond. 1 www.casatoscana.co.za Your top 3 Instagram accounts at the moment? Q @matzikamawellness Q @thebutterflyrevolution Q @on_the_road_living_free If you were a brand what would your motto be? "...Whats next?" What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently? I was on holiday in Mozambique, I don’t know Portuguese... after four days I was made aware that I had been introducing myself as a man.
