Let’s start with El Pistolero in Constantia Park. Who isn’t in the game for some authentic Mexican cuisine? From tacos to churros, we would highly recommend adding this place to your downtime itinerary. More about it on page 12 and other culinary excursion options on pages 19 and 20. our hands dirty for this issue at some of Pretoria’s popular pottery and painting studios, see page 26. For those who do want to get out of P-town for a couple of days, this month’s travel section, which kicks off on page 29, showcases some real gems in Durbs and Cape Town which won’t totally break the bank and are just far enough away from most of the maddening holiday crowds that take to the sea-side at this time of the year. And if getting out of Pretoria means a drive to Joburg because that’s all you have energy for, then don’t miss pages 34 and 35 for things to do in Jozi. Whatever you do and wherever you go, travel safe and have fun! I hope that you enjoy reading this month’s edition and please don’t forget to visit us online at www.hellopretoria.co.za for more exciting things to do in the jacaranda city and beyond.

Hello

ONLINE

www.hellopretoria.co.za

It’s technically still pring but it’s starting to feel a lot like summer! Holiday fever is in the air as we start to countdown toward December. It also means sparing a thought for our bank balances and saving up for all the festivities, gifts and social occasions that the festive period brings with it. We took a look at some recession busting activities to help keep your bank balance looking equally festive:

PICNIC IN THE PARK While meeting friends at restaurants and bars for a meal and a few cold ones is always a convenient way for a catch up, it can become costly – especially if it happens frequently. An alternate option which may end up lighter on the pocket, is to consider a picnic in one of Pretoria’s many parks, nature reserves or the botanical gardens. We are spoilt with warm Summer sunshine and picturesque sunsets, so why not take advantage and pack the picnic basket and cooler box and head out for a relaxed afternoon with friends. We take a look at a few of the best picnic locations around Pretoria.

TAKE IT TO MARKET

BE A TOURIST IN YOUR CITY When we live in a city for so long we sometimes take for granted all the beautiful, sentimental and patriotic places that make home so special. Spend some time in the gardens at the Union Buildings, attend one of the concerts at the Voortrekker Monument or take a drive down one of the straightest urban streets in the world – Stanza Bopape, Helen Joseph, WF Nkomo and Elias Motsoaledi (all formerly known as Church Street). We take a look at some options for exploring your city without breaking the bank.

An alternative to a weekend spent in a shopping centre is to spend some time at one of the many markets hosted around Pretoria. From the traditional Pretoria Boeremark to night markets and everything in between (even a banting market!), we are spoilt for choice and there are few places better to find wholesome, traditional, delicious food at reasonable prices along with fresh fruit and veg, flowers and sometimes event meat and cheeses directly from the farm. So spend a day out and enjoy artisanal food and drinks and take home fresh supplies for the week ahead without burning a hole in your wallet.

Who to follow

When it comes to surviving the recession and making your rand go further, there’s no better way than a little DIY to renovate, refurbish and revitalise – whether it be your furniture, clothes or even decorations for celebrations. We found a few Instagram accounts worth following for crafts and DIY inspiration:

Suzelle DIY (@suzellediy)

Handmade Charlotte (@handmadecharlotte)

Green Wedding Shoes (@greenweddingshoes)

Local celebrities, Suzelle and her silent sidekick, Marianne, exploded on to the Instagram scene a good few years ago with their entertaining life hacks and DIY renditions. Whilst their popularity may have simmered down, their Instagram account is still going strong with ideas and suggestions which we have to admit are actually really creative! With everything from recipes to arts and crafts, DIY projects to braai tips, Suzelle gives an easy to follow tutorial which, if nothing else, will provide you with healthy dose of humour and laughter.

If you’re looking for ways to keep the kids entertained without dishing out the dollars, then a good Instagram account to follow is Handmade Charlotte. The feed is filled with colourful, creative child-friendly crafts (many of which made with items you already will have at home) as well as easy to follow recipes. If you have children’s parties coming up then you might find some much needed inspiration for party packs, party games, themes dessert and snack ideas within the feed – all of which are cost effective and your kids can help you with.

If you’re getting married soon and the budget is looking a little frightening, then follow -Green Wedding Shoes for some wedding DIY inspiration. With friends and family and a bridal retinue who will be eager to help, this feed will help you recreate ideas for everything from table décor and bridesmaid’s dresses, to favours, gifts, cakes and even flower arrangements. Sometimes all the inspiration we need is just to see someone else has done it before and it means your wedding will be that much more personal and memorable.

She is a minister at a church in Lynnwood and, living in the city of jacarandas for 25 years has already made her realise that there’s nowhere else she would rather live.

Fay van Eeden says Pretoria is a beautiful city with countless trees. To her, it is a friendly and energetic city. “The climate is lovely. The people are friendly and they care for one another. The neighbourhood where I live often feels like a small town within the big city. Pretoria has an energy I love.” Fay is a foodie and says that the people of Pretoria are spoiled for choice when it comes to decent restaurants and quirky coffee shops. She loves having coffee at Vintage and 23 on Hazelwood. Her favourite dining spots include Caraffa Restaurant in Alphen Park and Culture Club at The Village in Hazelwood. Pretoria can get very warm in summer and with its warm summer afternoons in mind, she suggests a gin and tonic with friends at Meet on Milner. 1 www.vintagecoffee.co.za 1 www.23onhazelwood.co.za 1 www.caraffa.co.za 1 www.cultureclubtapas.co.za If this foodie could change anything about Pretoria, she would have loved for it to have fewer malls and more artisanal shops like bakeries, butcheries and greengrocers. Fay also enjoys taking advantage of summer - her favourite places to get some Vitamin D being the Hazel Food Market, the Moreleta Park Spruit and Jan Cilliers Park. E @hazelfoodmarket 1 www.tshwane.gov.za Even though the city is known as the jacaranda city and its streets turn purple in October and November with jacaranda trees blooming everywhere, Fay’s spring starts a month earlier. For her, the coral trees that paint the streets of the city red from September is a big favourite. Fay’s occupation often requires her to stay in Pretoria over the festive season. She doesn’t seem to mind at all, though. “Pretoria is peaceful in December. The restaurants are empty and the streets are quiet.” Well, an empty restaurant definitely boasts the best seats for this foodie and her friends! Hello Pretoria • November 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

El Pistolero LET’S TACO ‘BOUT GREAT MEXICAN FOOD IN PRETORIA

This little Mexican gem is hidden away on the quiet streets of Constantia Park in Pretoria and packs a punch when it comes to flavours. If you like it spicy, then this small but varied menu is one for you!

The jalapeño poppers were delicious and despite being about six notches hotter than my usual heat handling capacity, I was determined to eat more because the pleasure of the flavour far outweighed the pain of losing sensation in my lips. Besides, it was nothing a frozen margarita couldn’t solve!

cheese, spring onions and jalapeños. I think this dish alone would have been sufficient for the two of us as a main meal as the portion was substantial. It’s a great starter selection for sharing and there’s something therapeutic about dismantling a nacho tower whilst keeping all the toppings securely in place #SmallVictories. The third dish in our selection was Tacos Al Pastor. Three soft shell corn tortillas packed with pork belly adobo, roasted pineapple, red onion and coriander salsa. It was the type of taco which required both hands and some savvy hand actions to avoid losing some of the generously packed filling. If none of their taco options tickle your fancy, then you have a build-a-taco option which gives various meat and veg options along with an extensive list of sides to customize your meal. If I have one regret from the meal, it’s that I wish I had been less ambitious on the mains and left space for dessert. El Pistolero’s churros are served with dark chilli chocolate and milk jam and I was served a serious dose of food envy as I saw churros heading to the table alongside ours as we departed. I have it on good authority that they’re worth saving space for!

The drinks list is small but sufficient with a few wine options to choose from. The largest selection is, naturally, various types of tequila because a Mexican meal wouldn’t be complete without it. The staff are attentive and welcoming, and the open plan layout of the restaurant provides you with the opportunity to see the chefs in action. El Pistolero is one worth watching on social media as they often run specials such a Taco Tuesday (half price on all gourmet tacos) and half price cocktail jugs on Saturdays – not that we need more motivation to return! he menu at El Pistolero consists mainly of traditional Mexican favourites such as quesadillas, tacos and burritos with innovative fillings and ‘build your own’ options’. It’s not extravagant or overthought – the meals are simple and wholesome, and the portion sizes are generous. With two of us sitting down for dinner and the usual indecision when it comes to ordering from a new menu, we made the call to order two or three options to share. I should have known by the waitress’ giggle that my “we’ll order more once we’ve finished these” comment was one I’d be retracting mid-meal as I waved the white flag to surrender in defeat.

Taking a Leap of Faith The best outdoor adventures in the Magalies Mountains

Words Shevaun McCreedy Images Supplied

With Summer safely on its way and the mercury steadily rising across Gauteng, it’s time to get back into the great outdoors. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker, a weekend adrenaline-junkie or just looking for something adventurous for a family outing then we have a list of activities to keep you entertained. Magaliesberg Canopy Tours The Magaliesberg Canopy Tour is located in the Magaliesberg Biosphere Reserve – just one hour away from Pretoria. It takes you on a journey through the ecology and geology of one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world – which is estimated to be over 2,500 million years old. The tours are kept small and personal and are limited to group sizes of a maximum of nine people, with at least two guides accompanying each group. Eleven platforms are built against the cliff and rock faces of the spectacular Ysterhout Kloof, a beautiful gorge carved out of the mountainside, and are joined by steel cables that you slide along to reach the next platform. The canopy tour essentially involves zigzagging down the kloof while stopping at each platform to admire the expansive views and surrounding ecology. m 014 535 0150 1 www.canopytour.co.za

Kloofing with Mountain Adventures Let Mountain Adventures take you on the ultimate adventure as you walk up the Magalies mountain slopes and then scramble down into a pristine gorge and follow it downstream. Guests meet at the parking area at 8h30 to receive the necessary kit before starting the walk up the slopes of the mountain, which takes about an hour – then the uphill is over! You then scramble down a gully into the 60m deep gorge (that’s more than 15 stories!) and follow the river down, walking, rock hopping, wading, swimming, jumping and abseiling along the way to make it to the exit point. If you’re not a confident swimmer advise the guides in advance, so they can provide you with a life jacket as there is a compulsory 20m swim along the route. m 082 652 1490 1 www.mountainadventures.co.za

Ballooning with

Bill Harrop’s Balloon Safaris Whilst some find it romantic, others find the notion of travelling in a basket hovering below an inflated balloon downright terrifying – but either way, it’s one of those bucket list adventures we should all try once in our lives. Tea, coffee and muffins are served on arrival and as dawn breaks, the pilot fires up the burners and you’ll set off on a magical trip with views over the Magalies River Valley and the Magalies mountains. The flight is an hour in duration and upon landing, you’ll be taken for a champagne breakfast. Sounds pretty perfect if you ask us! m 011 705 3201 1 www.balloon.co.za Hello Pretoria • November 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

retoria’s purple coloured streets boast numerous local watering holes, with incredibly creative and inviting cocktails to try. Although you would most likely find classics like mojitos, strawberry daiquiris and cosmopolitans at any of Pretoria’s well-known spots, the bar has been raised and most mixologists have taken it up a notch.

If you’re a gin fan, try the Thyme to Fig Out cocktail - a combination of Bombay Sapphire Gin, fig, thyme, lemon and Pongracz - or Gin up my Cobbler - a mix of Bombay Sapphire Gin, grapefruit, full cream sherry and honey might tickle your fancy. Daventry St, Lynnwood m 010 286 0001 1 www.tigersmilk.co.za

Tiger’s Milk at Lynnwood Bridge has an impressive list of cocktails for both budget conscious and splurging individuals. With nine signature cocktails and more to choose from, you’ll be at it all night. If you’re looking for something out of this world or even a little mad when it comes to cocktail mixing, try the Mad Mary. This one of a kind cocktail is a mix of Absolut Vodka, full cream sherry, Bovril, lime, tomato, spice, biltong and basil.

Salsa Mexican Grill at Loftus Park has a wide variety of unique cocktails and when in Mexico, you do like the Mexicans do, which means tequila calls the shots. Try their Cucumber Twist with tequila, lime, cucumber and honey; their Paloma with tequila, fresh lime juice, grapefruit juice and soda water or their Berry Nice & Spice, a mixture of El Jimador Blanco tequila, berry tea, cinnamon syrup, lime juice and bitters.

LUDWIG STEYL POPUP

This will be the first exhibition of Ludwig Steyl at the Trent Gallery in Waterkloof, Pretoria. His exhibited work consists of digital line drawings and monochromatic paintings exploring the male form. In his work, Steyl investigates the architecture of the male form. In contrast to the repeated layering of the painted work, the line drawings draw on the idea of rapidly capturing a brief moment. Paintings are thickly layered, sculpting the image with multiple applications of acrylic paint. The exhibition tracks the development from richly textured paintings, through line drawings, to a series of stark black and white portraits exploring shadow as the creator of form and is not to be missed. WHERE TWO OCEANS MEET:

DURBAN AND CAPETOWN The ultimate seaside dream Whether you’re obsessed with being a beach bum or witnessing a sunset fall over the horizon, these two major cities are addictive. We’ve seen and done it all, so we thought we would offer two travel options that are slightly more distinctive. And if like us, you’re all about edifying that summertime feeling and you’re demanding more ocean breezes, relaxation and piña coladas, then this is just for you. DURBAN Go to Zimbali Fairmont Resort- North Coast- for a well-deserved week of indulgence The Fairmont Zimbali Resort situated inside the exclusive Zimbali Coastal Estate is an imposing oasis and is just a short 30-minute drive from the airport. After your 45-minute flight lands, you’ll either be collected by their shuttle service or hire a car and drive. There really is nothing else like this immaculate resort style offering in South Africa. It’s a little slice of heaven in the heart of Durban. The first thing you’ll notice is the abundance of plants and overgrown vegetation, it’s a tropical retreat that offers complete privacy. The resort has a Bali style architectural feel with vervet monkeys swinging from above and the Indian Ocean in front of you; it’s truly a remarkable location.

28

Discover the hotel’s offerings, which impress with 154 guest rooms and suites, including a penthouse and presidential suite, as well as 18 Fairmont Heritage Place villas, the Willow Stream Spa with eight treatment rooms, five restaurant offerings, a health club and two swimming pools. heels for this resort; you could easily stay the week and never get bored. The rooms have magnificent ocean views and beds fit for kings and queens, there is even a turndown water bottle service and a large luxurious bathtub that you just might sit and soak in for hours with a glass of bubbles, listening to the sprays and breaks of the ocean. Its homely yet luxurious and motions just the right amount of comfort. The highlight of our weekend was the Ayoba Mexican restaurant and day pool. It’s a beach club, barefoot and cocktail- in-hand kind of ambience. There is a wood fired pizza oven for the most delicious Mexican flatbreads, cheesy traditional style nachos, chilli poppers, burritos and crunchy beach bar tacos. To wash it all down you’ll have to force yourself to have one of their Margaritas. Choose from the classic to the more inventive, like the cinnamon and pineapple margarita or the guava and chilli margarita - shaken or frozen they are deliciously delectable. For dinner, we also adored the live piano entertainment at The 31 Degrees Bar and recommend sipping on an African Queen cocktail just before dining at their fine dining Osa Indian restaurant. They serve authentic Indian food served by an authentic Indian chef who concocts dishes from Northern India with a traditional Tandoori oven. Ensure you spend at least one full lazy day on the private beach in front of the resort, exclusively for Zimbali hotel guests, it’s an untouched sliver of bliss, pristine, unspoiled sand dunes and an ocean view that will sweep you off your feet. It’s visually spectacular.

Nestled in Amanzimtoti Kwazulu Natal this five-star boutique style hotel ticks all the right boxes. You’ll see a different side to Durban because you’re far away from the city lights and close to the cheerful coast. What was once a town you simply passed through has now become a gem of a destination. You’ll fall in love with this little beach town and its laid-back surfers and deep blue waters. This pretty coastal town is quaint and charming and allows for the perfect weekend getaway. If you’re able to, try visiting in June or July, as there is a Sardine run, well worth a visit! The hotel is not your standard chain but rather offers surroundings that are tranquil and peaceful, and you won’t see anyone you know. It’s the kind of sabbatical where you can unwind with a book or three and have permission to be reclusive. Plus, the sunset over the hotel is utterly mesmerizing. Dinner is also served in Giorgio’s with a romantic and dreamy setting where you can choose from delightful culinary delights like a Dolce & Gabbana pizza with creamy gorgonzola and tangy caramelized onions, a garlic prawn and mussel pasta served in a creamy white wine sauce or the fresh fish of the day.

If you’re lusting for wellness we have just the location. Forget Stellenbosch and Franschhoek we have a new favourite. Last month we visited this exclusive charming little venue in the Helderberg Mountains and were awestruck by its raw beauty and everlasting winelands. If you’re looking for a lighter, brighter holiday experience then this ticks all the right boxes. We couldn’t think of anything better than escaping the Jozi hustle and bustle and unwinding in the Cape Winelands for the weekend. You’re definitely guaranteed to enhance your energy and sense of purpose.

the solid foundation of this lodge. Laid-back luxury is what we opted for, and so, we had a three-night detox and yoga retreat adventure. But don’t assume simplicity, you will have a butler on call all weekend long, it’s a retreat your way. There is a restaurant in the lodge as well as a hedonistic pamper haven awaiting you at their spa. We were served beautiful bountiful bowls for all meals. You can opt to create your own, whether it’s grilled line fish, butter beans, quinoa, roasted veggies, kale or homemade tahini dressing, name it they offer it. We also loved the Mexican bowl jam-packed with generous cheesy nachos and fresh guacamole. So, whether you prefer an all vegan or vegetarian detox or you would rather have a glass of wine at lunch, your wish is their command. But our suggestion is that you have to try their berry smoothie, which is served to the room with freshly picked lavender from the garden. P.S the restaurant will be changing this month into a Spanish tapas bar. The yoga retreat does not take place at the lodge but is just a short drive to Lourensford wine estate. The lodge offers a complimentary shuttle service to and from the wine farm. Snuggled inside the Lourensford wine estate are 37 dams, five rivers and the life retreat studio. From yoga retreats to corporate packages, reiki, astrology, Pilates, endocrinology, massages and meditation to oneof-a-kind experiences, they offer it all. Amongst the berry and fruit trees and a variety of indigenous plants you’ll experience wellness like never before. It’s the first of its kind and pure genius to create a yoga and wellness centre inside a wine estate. What you’ll quickly realise is what sets the studio apart are the specialised instructors. We recommend attending one of Ryan Gary Edmonds or Samantha Aronson’s classes. They are highly trained, intuitive and offer stellar expertise in their craft.

The Silver Forest Boutique Lodge & Spa Life Retreat Studio offers you the opportunity to tailor make your perfect Wellness (or Adventure). Perfect for end-of-year functions, team buildings, spoiling top clients, group trainings, NPO development, specialized events, birthday celebrations or just as a treat for yourself and loved ones. Leverne Mountany was born in Pretoria and grew up in Midrand. As a child, she was an avid reader with an active imagination. While still in school, she would borrow her entire family’s library cards so that she could take out as many books from the public library as possible. Leverne runs a successful psychiatry practice in Johannesburg, she’s a co-director of Psychiatry M Powered, an anti-stigma NGO, she authors a travel blog named Passports and Pomegranate Soup and this year at the age of 47, she published her first book Lunch with a Dragonfly that was inspired by her travels. Do you ever suffer from ‘writer’s block’

What’s the most difficult part about writing a book? Self-discipline is a constant hurdle while writing. I am a sprinter rather than a marathon runner so daily writing is not my strength. Since I still have a day job I prefer taking off extended periods and then just writing constantly. Therefore, Lunch with a Dragonfly was written over four years but with about six months of actual writing time.

Without any spoilers, who is the most interesting character in the book and why? I think there is a bit of me in every character, but I have a soft spot for Dorota. Everybody should have a friend like her. Gasparetto is another favourite since he actually lives in my house in real life!

and if so how do you overcome it? I struggle more with procrastination than actual writer’s block. I get most of my best ideas in the shower or bath or anywhere near water. A cup flowing! If you could describe yourself as a colour what would it be and why? Well, I once had a pink car, so I suppose it is a colour that could depict me. It is playful, romantic, feminine, nurturing, passionate, compassionate and caring side. What’s your favourite comfort food? Spicy ramen. The best one I ever had was at a

What inspired you most to write Lunch with a Dragonfly? The backbone of Lunch with a Dragonfly is a story I have in large parts been carrying with me for many years. The flesh is inspired by my travels and foodie interests.
