ello Pretoria! April went so fast that the whole month felt like an April fools’ joke. Did it really happen?

The fast-paced city life often seems to be an uphill battle and things like the economy, the elections and the unpredictability of load shedding and traffic can easily knock you down. I find it almost refreshing to know that none of us are alone in this rat race and I am once again thankful for community. Can you imagine if we all had to feel flabbergasted on our own? This is also why our feature story is such a great fit for this Worker issue, as The Workspace offers space for remote workers to work among others, but it also offers solutions for large companies and employees in terms of time, money and wellbeing. Read more about the evolving coworking industry and work trends on page 6. Working late? Have a look at our article about the Gautrain’s night time schedules – our very own Gautrain 101. Travelling for work is often harder work than the work itself. Have a look on page 16 where we talk about how you can combat dry skin while travelling. We also suggest a couple of products to use for dry skin during these upcoming winter months. This month we take a look at the tongue-in-cheek lingo in Buffelsfontein Beesboerdery restaurant’s menu and find out what makes Toureiro House of Prawns a pescatarian paradise. We also visit Menlyn Park Shopping Centre for some unavoidable winter work attire shopping and we cosy up your home with some trendy winter buys from Forest Hill Shopping Centre. It’s a magazine filled with work and play and that’s how it should be! After all, Mother’s Day also falls in May, which is a good reason to focus on family time. Balancing work and family is not always very easy, but with destinations like the Lion & Safari Park just on your doorstep, you don’t have much of an excuse. Read more about how you can spoil your mom here on page 23. We’d like to encourage you to re-evaluate your work and family life balance this month. If you’re not happy with what you discover, try to adapt. Change is often for the better and if it can improve your mental and physical wellbeing, save you time and reduce your spending, why not? One of the main work trends is increased flexibility. We say, use it to your advantage. Happy Mother’s Day to my mom and all the other moms out there. Being a mother myself, I solute you twice, because mothers work double as hard.

MARLENE'S RECIPE BOOK: PLATE

Marlene van der Westhuizen’s recipe book, PLATE (published by Struik Lifestyle) has recently been launched and it is filled with a collection of simple, delicious brasserie-luxe style recipes from her kitchen in Green Point, Cape Town, but also her more recent kitchen in Charroux, France. It is divided into three chapters: Meat, poultry and seafood and the book is also available in Afrikaans as BORD. One lucky reader can win this book, valued at R375.

ROVOS RAIL TURNS 30 It was not an easy climb, but luckily the owner and CEO of Rovos Rail Tours, Rohan Vos, is not someone who likes to be told that he can’t do something. Like many in the hospitality industry, Rovos Rail also had its fair share of turbulence and even though the company has grown substantially, the determined and family-orientated spirit that started the business 30 years ago, is still intact. Their new route, Trail of Two Oceans, coincides well with their 30th birthday and departs for its maiden voyage in July this year.

TIMEWARP DELIVERY LAUNCHED IN MAY Entrepreneur, Janlo van den Heever is a force to be reckoned with. His venture, Timewarp Delivery is operational from 1 May 2019 – a company aiming at creating sustainable employment by providing convenience for consumers and helping local retailers in the community grow. Timewarp Delivery delivers groceries, drops off coffees, takeaways and restaurant food, as well as pharmaceutical products and more. The business plan allows the company to beat traffic, exceed user expectations and have a minimal carbon footprint on the environment.

SUN CITY CELEBRATES #THEBIG40 Sun City Resort is turning 40 this year and they recently kicked off the celebrations with an event in their Encore Nightclub, reminiscing about times gone by. That was only the beginning, though, with numerous specials and discounts up their sleeve. Think R440 per delegate and room rates similar to those charged 40 years ago.

THE

WORKSPACE Work, Cowork, Network

O

ver the last 10 years, there has been a change in the way we work with a visible shift in workplace culture. Not to mention the ever-evolving technology. This has brought about a high demand for flexible workspaces - whether it is a large corporation or a one-man-show. What was always a desk solution aimed at entrepreneurs, consultants and SMEs has become a sought after serviced office or coworking space that can be used as a satellite office for larger companies as well. More and more employers are starting to realise the benefits to their companies when they address their employees’ demands, needs and responsibilities, as well as their overall wellbeing. This can be addressed in many ways, one of which is to offer their employees more flexibility in terms of where and when they work. It’s like Mark Carruthers recently said via #WorkTrends on Twitter: “What is important to a single person at 30 is totally different than another 30-year old with a spouse, a couple of kids, a mortgage and a car loan.” For the latter, working from a satellite office, coworking space or serviced office like that of The Workspace at The Club in Hazelwood, might be the better option. Being closer to home, not having to sit in traffic for two to three hours a day (if not more) and

6

Hello Pretoria • May 2019 • Hellopretoria.co.za

having your own time are some of the needs many employees would vouch for. Granted, the employee must also commit to his or her responsibilities and get the job done, which is probably one of the main reasons many companies are not willing to step into the field of more flexible workspaces. Still, the trends that are dominating the workplace these days are moving in a direction where people not only want to work for a purpose; they also want permanent flexibility, allowing them to work from home or closer to home and with that they still want the benefits of a permanent employee. These trends among others have had an impact on the development side of things when it comes to office blocks and workspaces across the country. Serviced offices and coworking spaces are a growing industry and as the work trends keep changing, this new and innovative industry is evolving around it. One of the biggest concerns of employees that work remotely is loneliness. The Workspace eliminates that by providing an open space where you can work among others while having your own privacy too. The Workspace’s branch at The Club is an open, modern space with large windows to the one side providing lovely views of The Club

Traditional office leasing seems to be something of the past with new coworking and serviced office spaces springing up all over the country.

According to CEO, Mari Schourie, The Workspace is a full-blown hospitality business where the members come first. “I am very passionate about small businesses,” says Mari who also feels strongly about The Workspace’s staff being fundamental in the success stories of their members’ businesses. “The people here are not just a number,” she says. Schourie has been in the serviced office industry for 18 years and in 2014 she started the service office division for holding company, InteSpace. Today there are 12 branches of The Workspace with two upcoming branches in Linden and Parktown North. “Over the last couple of years the shift between serviced offices and coworking spaces has become evident,” says Schourie. The Workspace was one of the first local companies to have started with coworking in South Africa. You’d think that millennials roam the coworking spaces and even though they form a large part of The Workspace’s membership, there is a wide variety of members considering language, race and age. The members include educated people with degrees, many of whom have started their own consulting companies. The main businesses that are run from The Workspace include services like attorneys, insurance brokers, financial advisors, business advisors and accountants. There are also journalists that work from these offices, as well as graphic designers and many more vast industries.

The Workspace often hosts networking events and intimate networking dinners for members to mingle – a great initiative allowing members to find ways in which they can collaborate and expand their businesses.

Having an office close to grocery shops, schools and medical centres is ideal, and having it somewhere where you don’t need to sit in traffic all day, is even better. For The Workspace, a convenient locality is key. They try to help people save time, money and effort allowing them to focus their energy on building their business. Mari says: “Our branches are very strategically located. We focus very strongly on decentralised locations.” Most of the people working at The Workspace actually live just around the corner, but having an office where they can hold meetings and have someone answering the phones, is a great add-on to a professional business. For small businesses, this is really the ideal desk solution if you don’t want to work from home. It also reduces risk for small businesses, as there is no need to spend a fortune on office furniture, WiFi contracts and other start-up and set-up costs.

precinct and it is divided into a number of smaller, informal lounge areas, a coffee bar, shared desks as well as more private lock-up offices. It has a contagious atmosphere where the inspiration and productivity are tangible.

Even though The Workspace’s management team often travels overseas to see what is trending, it is also important to keep in mind that South Africa is unique. Knowing the type of people who work in these coworking spaces and serviced offices is one of the key aspects that makes The Workspace successful. It is necessary to know who the members are and what they want. Keeping in mind that these needs also keep changing, The Workspace keeps evolving around those requirements. In fact, they are currently busy looking at adding some studios to their offering for bloggers, vloggers and other creatives to use in response to recent feedback from their members. The Workspace also offers booth seats with television screens (where their members can hold informal meetings or present presentations), training rooms and boardrooms and they are currently in the process of developing an app which will allow you to book a seat at any of their branches instantly Cnr Pinaster Avenue and 18th Street The Club Shopping Centre Second Floor, Hazelwood 1 012 764 7200 1 www.theworkspace.co.zabranches/pretoria/

P-TOWN’S TOWNSHIPS A new angle to exploring your city

We take a deeper look at some of the townships around Pretoria this month – you might be surprised at what they have to offer!

8

Hello Pretoria • May 2019 • Hellopretoria.co.za

Mamelodi Did you know that the word, Mamelodi, means Mother of Melodies? True to its name, this is where Molombo Jazz, a unique jazz style originated from. This jazz style is derived from Mbaqanga, traditional Ndebele and Pedi drumming, Zionist gospel music and the African jazz guitar. One of Mamelodi’s main tourist attractions is its cemetery, where a number of freedom fighters, including Solomon Mahlangu, were buried. The Mamelodi Rondawels (roundhouses),

which were the first houses in Mamelodi, and Solomon Mahlangu Square, where the Mamelodi Massacre took place, are also worth a visit. Marabastad If you were wondering where you could find real African delicacies and bargain buys, Marabastad, founded and ruled by the Ndebele chief Maraba in the 1880s, is definitely your answer! It is known for its Asiatic Bazaar (similar to Jozi’s Oriental Plaza – just a little less orderly) and it’s a mecca for bargain shopping with hundreds of stalls selling all kinds of African delicacies like nuts, dried Mupani worms and strings and strings of beads. Ndebele artisans even come here to buy beads. The shop called Kalbro on 11th Street sells glass beads that have been imported from the Czech Republic, so we suppose not everything is proudly African. Still, this multicultural neighbourhood which experienced forced removals in the 1940s and 1950s has many, many stories to tell. These are but a few of the cultural gems around Pretoria and a good start to getting to know the city from another angle!

Atteridgeville Initially intended to be named Motsemogolo (large township), Atteridgeville was named after Mrs MP Atteridge, the chairperson of the City Council’s Committee for nonEuropean Affairs at the time. Established in 1939, it is a vibrant and diverse township often also referred to as the jazz capital of South Africa. It is a popular tourist attraction for both locals and foreigners and is well known for its restaurants, shebeens and taverns. It is also here where jazz lovers gather on the 26th of December each year for the annual Jazz in the Park concert – considered one of the best one-day jazz festivals in the

world. South African actor, Sello Maakeka-Ncube and the former middle-distance runner, Sidney Maree were both born here. Even though we recommend you visit this township as part of a tour group, be sure to add these attractions to your itinerary: Janicky’s Pub and Restaurant, Ga-Mothakga Recreation Resort (where the annual Jazz concert takes place and also where SS Mendi Memorial tombstone – in honour of soldiers who died when the SS Mendi sank during World War I – is located) and the Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe Stadium with a capacity of 28 900. This stadium is mainly used for football matches and Germany’s football team used it as their training venue during the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

Mamelodi TOURS THROUGH

A tour through Mams could be the next best tour you take

Mamelodi, or Mams as the locals call it, has ample to offer and you can do tours to experience it all.

amelodi boasts a couple of clusters to be explored. Moretele Park is the biggest green space in Mamelodi and is surrounded by great food, great music and stories of a bygone era. The Village Pub is famous for its shisa nyama and heritage sites like Moretele Park and the Solomon Mahlangu Home Museum take you back in time. Mams is also buzzing when it comes to nightlife and there are a couple of drink and entertainment hotspots to look out for when in the area. These include Jack Budha, Thibo Café, Blackwhole Lounge and Exclusive Lounge. Heritage sites like the Nico Smith House and Solomon Mahlangu Freedom Square are attractions worth visiting too. Nico Smith was a South African minister who abandoned his lifestyle as minister of the apartheidsupporting Dutch Reformed Church to live with the impoverished and segregated blacks of Mamelodi from where he worked to support the black community and oppose Apartheid. Did you know that you can take a cycle tour

through the streets of Mamelodi? Many people would consider this risky, but as long as you travel in groups and stay with your guide there is no reason why you can’t enjoy a tour through one of South Africa’s most historical townships and one of Gauteng’s oldest neighbourhoods.

Ubuhle Be Narha Tours offers a bicycle tour through the streets of Mamelodi with the opportunity to experience all the township has to offer with a knowledgeable and registered guide at your side. He will tell you all there is to know about Mamelodi’s history and the sacrifices made by locals like Solomon Mahlangu, Dr Fabian Ribeiro and Nico Smith during the struggle for a liberated South Africa. The tour costs R750 per person and requires at least two persons per booking. 1 www.ubuhletours.com Another exciting heritage tour to put on your bucket list is The Mamelodi Heritage Experience tour. It is an entrepreneurial initiative and an eco-tourist experience that shares the rich history of Mamelodi

with locals and foreigners alike. On this tour, you’ll get to understand the ins and outs of Mamelodi with stops at various local heritage sites. The aim of this tour is to make Mamelodi one of South Africa’s must-see attractions. You will be able to enjoy some local cuisine, visiting a variety of food stops including homes, taverns and local eateries. Stanza Bopape Community Centre, Solomon Mahlangu Square, FF Ribeiro, Mamelodi Rondavels, Eerste Fabriek, the museum, the mountain and the village are all also on the itinerary. The Mamelodi Heritage Experience also offers chauffeured tours of the township, extreme cycling activities, team-building exercises, tours of Tshwane nightspots and educational heritage programmes for schools. They even started their own cycling club called Urban Riders. k zskhonde@yahoo.com m 073 249 0639 So, pump those wheels and get ready to explore the neighbourhood of Mamelodi. Philip Kotze

Flexi hours, work ethics and family values

Philip Kotze has been living in Pretoria since 2006. He studied at the Tshwane University of Technology and now owns his own business, NOK Roofing. As husband and dad to three youngsters, quality time with his family is of the utmost importance. “The advantage of working for yourself is that you and your wife can often drink coffee during the week.” Weekends are holy in the Kotze family. Philip says he prefers staying at home over weekends as he often travels during the week. They enjoy living in Pretoria because it still has a very large Afrikaans community, everything in Pretoria is relatively close and you don’t have to sit in traffic for hours to get somewhere. Many of their good friends also live in the Old East like they do, and it is easy to break away for a weekend without having to drive too far. He says the city is unique – it has history, nature reserves, business parks and old-school neighbourhoods like Brooklyn and Groenkloof. Philip is an entrepreneur at heart. There is no difference in work ethics and life ethics for him. “I live according to certain standards,” he says. Excellence is what he strives for as a husband, father, brother and friend. The same goes for his work. “If your work is excellent and your clients are happy, you will never be without work.” He says integrity and honesty are non-negotiable. It’s the basis of any relationship, whether it is at work or at home. According to him, you should never underestimate your ability to generate an income. “You should also not underestimate the value of buying and selling.” He loves working flexi hours even though he admits that it takes a lot of discipline. “I have a young family, so some afternoons I play outside with the kids and work in the evenings.”

10

sports RUN, PRETORIA, RUN! WINTER IS UPON US AND NOW IS THE TIME TO START RUNNING

Words Renate Engelbrecht Images Supplied

With winter fast approaching, it is so easy to let go. The sun is just as lazy as you are in the morning, which often means you’d rather snooze a little longer instead of putting on your running shoes. Here are some races that will keep you running in May:

McCarthy VW/Audi Love Run Half Marathon Starting at the Hatfield Christian Church in January Masilela Drive on 4 May, this race is all about the love for running. If the open road is your happy place, then this race is meant for you. It is a challenging, but fun running event with bands and entertainment along the route. For both the 21.1km and the 10km routes there are walking options too, which start 15 minutes earlier. The race’s timing will be done by www.raceresults.co.za and the results will automatically be submitted to Discovery Vitality. You can enter online at www. entrytime.com or at Audi Centre Arcadia, Audi Centre Menlyn, McCarthy VW Menlyn, McCarthy VW Wonderboom, McCarthy VW Silver Oaks or Runaway Sports. You can also enter on race morning at 4h30.

1 www.loverunning.co.za

Wings for Life World Run For those who can’t take part in the McCarthy VW/Audi Love Run Half Marathon, there’s another race the next day and this one is quite unique as you can take part in it without having to be at a special event for it. In fact, you can do this race wherever you are in the world as it is a global race with an app that gives you the option of running with an organised app run or individually. You can even train with the app by signing in via Facebook or Runtastic. All entry fees go towards research for spinal cord injuries. Why not join a good cause and run for those who can’t? The race takes place on 5 May and there is an organised run that departs from Irene Agricultural Farm. Join tens of thousands across the globe in a race with no set distance and no finish line. Entries close on 2 May at 13h00 and only online entries will be accepted.

eauty sleep is not so farfetched if you think of it. Hopping on and off planes and sleeping in a different bed every night interferes with your beauty routines and the state of your skin – that’s a fact. According to blogger, Siobhan Yeatman from Supgarspiceblog2 there are 3 must-haves that need to be in your travel bag: A great cleanser, a deep moisturiser and baby wipes. She advises to keep it simple, but also to use good quality products that won’t let you down. Nikel’s Cleansing Milk with Immortelle is one of her favourites, as it is nourishing and very gentle on the skin – the ideal product to counter the dehydrating artificial climate of an aeroplane. She’s also a big fan of Nikel’s all-natural Nikelhidris Face Cream, a luxurious moisturiser which she says is light enough to use both day and night. “I just love the beautiful scent from the orange oil,” she says. Yeatman also explains that except for the fact that baby wipes are gentle on the skin, there are many uses for them when travelling. Beauty and travel influencer, Nasiphi Ngcwabe claims to never travel without Nikel’s Nikelbalm for her lips. Give your skin some extra TLC the night before you leave on your trip. Gently exfoliate your skin to remove dead skin cells, which will allow your skin to get the most out of your moisturiser. Then

use a replenishing mask for deep moisturising and nourishing. While travelling, be sure to take steps in combatting dehydration, your skin’s biggest enemy. For a refreshing, great-smelling boost of moisture, Ngcwabe suggests Nikel’s Alpine Rose Tonic. Alternatively, keep Nikel’s travel-sized Evening Primrose Oil at hand. Mirjana Brlečić, founder of Nikel Cosmetics, says she oftens add a few drops of Evening Primrose Oil to her moisturiser, which has proven to fight off dryness, inflammation and stress. Of course, drinking plenty of water while travelling is of utmost importance in order to keep yourself and your skin healthy and hydrated. Yeatman also adds Here are a that travelling is not couple of similar necessarily the ideal time to try out new products you can products. FOR BOERE, BEARDS AND BRIDES

BUFFELSFONTEIN BEESBOERDERY

Buffelsfontein Boerdery is a tongue-in-cheek eatery at the popular Greenlyn Village Centre in Menlo Park that has celebrated their 2nd birthday in March. Their slogan is simple: Meat, Beer, Wine.

I Words: Renate Engelbrecht Images: Supplied

t is the perfect fit for boere, beards and brides as this is where you’ll find men with well-groomed beards and khaki shorts in the middle of winter and any woman who can deal with that amount of testosterone is worth making a bride. Buffelsfontein Beesboerdery might just be the most Afrikaans restaurant in town. It is owned by the same owners of the popular Buffelsfontein Baardolie and Brandy, Mark Eybers and Meyer le Roux. With this brand, you need to understand Afrikaans to really appreciate their often-hilarious play on words and blunt, but brilliant comments. Everything about Buffelsfontein Beesbouerdery accentuates the ruggedness of the bush, the harshness of hunting and the peacefulness of a campfire – all with a hint of sarcasm and a grin hidden behind a trendy beard. True to its name, it is all about meat at Buffelsfontein Beesboerdery. In fact, the menu claims that it was not the owner, but the waiters who included the Keiser Salad under the

lunch options. So, treat yourself to some good, South African steak with all the true Afrikaans dishes that make you miss South Africa and the Afrikaans language terribly when you’re not in the country. They serve Afrikaanse Pouseiers (their own version of an Eggs Benedict Florentine) for breakfast, braaibroodjies for lunch and melktert toebroodjies for dessert. Their light snacks leave you nostalgic with meatballs like only your grandmother could make. All their lunchtime options go for R65 between 11h00 and 15h00 on weekdays, which we think is reason enough to treat yourself. They also have some special dishes like bone marrow fillet and lamb chops and they even cater for the discerning pescatarian with a sea bass dish that they describe as a salad that swims. Where there is meat, there is beer (in this case mik-en-sluk) and wine. The bar also serves what they call skietertjies (generally known as shooters). Couple your drinks with some platters like Die hele plaaswerf opgekerf or

Wyntjie se maat – the Afrikaans way of wining and dining that makes you linger for longer. This restaurant reminds you of your roots in an honest, but funny; naughty, but hilarious way and they do it with some impressive menu options. . Here are our favourite wordplays from their menu: l Bederfroom – Buffelsfontein brandy,

Nachtmusik chocolate liqueur and Amarula over crushed ice Bietjiekiepie Rolletjie – chicken burger Halwe Slaai en Slaai – half chicken with salad Resessie Rol – hotdog (directly translated: Recession Roll) Rolhappies – spring rolls Blaasvlamvla – crème brulée

Toureiro House of Prawns A PESCATARIAN’S PARADISE

Hidden away in the Northern parts of Pretoria is a seafood restaurant with soul – an absolute haven with a calm, relaxing atmosphere by day that turns into a vibey venue at night.

20

The ideal venue for a quick break-away from the office, Toureiro House of Prawns offers seafood meals that you can’t say no to and dishes you don’t find at many other Pretoria restaurants. The Whiskey Prawns is definitely Hello Pretoria • May 2019 • Hellopretoria.co.za

worth a try, with a rich cream sauce and delicious traditional sides. Toreiro’s Kingklip Toureiro is also a safe bet and for that, you need to come hungry. According to waiter, Abel, the Sole Bonne Femme is another favourite among guests and be sure to ask about their specials for the day as you might just be lucky to get a generous helping of lobster at a very reasonable price. During the day, the restaurant is a sanctuary to many and a lovely family restaurant for special occasions and business lunches alike. You can even couple it with some décor shopping at Etienne Lewis’ impressive showroom. The twinkling fairy lights hanging from the thatch roofs and around the big tree in the middle’s branches is proof, though, that from six at night you probably need to arrive with your dancing shoes and stamina – figuratively speaking. Toureiro certainly found a way to combine the highveld’s culture with the coast’s cuisine and locals clearly enjoy what the restaurant has to offer. The restaurant entertains regulars and newcomers with live performances on Friday

evenings from 18h00 to half-past 22h00 and on Sundays from 12h00 to 16h00 and there are a number of television screens for those who are keen on watching some sports while enjoying their favourite beer on tap. For a discerning out of towner, Toureiro House of Prawns might just be the ultimate treat and a show-off of proper seafood in the heart of the highveld. It’s also no secret that their portions are rich and generous, and you’ll definitely agree that you get value for your money. Mother’s Day is sure to be filled with lots of seafood goodness at Toureiro House of Prawns with two seatings scheduled for the day – one from 10h30 and one from 15h00. Be sure to book your table in time. Seafood in Gauteng is often a juggle, but we can vouch for Toureiro House of Prawns. It might not be your typical under-the-sea experience, but somehow they make Pretoria the place for pescatarians. 978 Veda Avenue Montana m 012 548 2716

FAMILY TIME AT

LION & SAFARI PARK TREAT YOUR MOM THIS WAY IN MAY Flowers, chocolates and floral bath products are great, but often it feels like such a small gesture when you want to thank your mother for everything she has done. If you’re at your wit’s end about how to treat your mom for Mother’s Day, the Lion & Safari Park (just 13km North of Lanseria Airport) might be your answer.

side from a variety of educational tours, you can also drive your own vehicle and get close to the park’s wildlife, including lions. With these drives, you get to enjoy nature as a family and for us, family time is quality time. We bet your mother feels the same way too. These self-drives allow you to drive through the park’s lion and wild dog enclosures in your own time and can be combined with lion feedings at 12h00 and 15h00 on weekends. Kids under 12 are free for all self-drives and game drives. If dad doesn’t feel like driving and the kids don’t have their learner’s yet, the mini safari tour or the full safari are alternative options. The mini safari tour is a guided safari drive of 1.5 hours during which you will encounter lions, hyenas, wild dogs, cheetah and leopard. You’ll also be able to ask some questions about the three different hyena species and learn more about the antelope that roam the area. The full safari includes the predator tour, a scenic guided drive through 600ha of an

impressive wildlife area, a visit to the hyenas and leopards and a lovely break with snacks on the banks of the Crocodile River. If your mother is one for adventure, why not surprise her with a river rafting experience? After all, experiences and memories are worth so much more than a box of chocolates. The river rafting expedition departs from the Lion & Safari Park and consists of a 20-minute drive through the park down to the Crocodile river. You get geared up and trained on the riverbank after which you will embark into the rafts on a 2.5-hour trip downstream. Remember to pack some dry clothes for afterwards as you will certainly encounter some rapids and obstacles. k rapidescentadventures@gmail.com m 082 820 5577 The Lion & Safari Park is also home to two restaurants: The Bull ’n Buck Grill, with a variety of veal, chicken, seafood and steak dishes and the Wetlands Restaurant and Bar, a large outdoor restaurant that caters for the

whole family with hamburgers, homemade pizza from an authentic clay oven, flamegrilled chicken and more. Keep an eye out on their website and social media platforms for Mother’s Day lunch options. It is often the case that when the kids are happy, mom is happy. At the Lion & Safari Park, it’s a win-win situation with a wide variety of jungle gyms, jumping castles and many other entertaining rides. Kids can play for hours while dad spoils mom to a piece of cake at one of the nearby restaurants. Entrance to the Lion & Safari Park is free and you only pay for activities and game drives. NIGHT-TIME TRAVEL 101 GAUTRAIN TAKES YOU PLACES

26

Commuting to work and back with the Gautrain is one thing, but how often have you taken it at night? Keeping in mind that not all the Gautrain’s stations close at the same time and that they often amend their times according to special events happening in and around Johannesburg and Pretoria, it’s a safe and reliable way of getting to where you Hello Pretoria • May 2019 • Hellopretoria.co.za

need to be. Even though it comes with a bit of planning, it often saves time rather than wastes time. Another reliable transport option, especially at night and when you’ve had a couple of drinks, is Uber and they collaborate very well with Gautrain in taking you places. The Gautrain stations are all very strategically located, allowing for your Uber transport to be only a short drive at a rather low cost. If you live in Pretoria and you’re planning to explore Johannesburg in the evening, the Gautrain is a brilliant transport option. Park Station is situated between Braamfontein, Hillbrow, Fashion District and Newtown – main attractions in the City of Gold, which means travelling there is unavoidable if you are keen for an authentic Jozi experience. This station closes at 21h30. Rosebank’s Gautrain station is just around the corner from Parktown’s restaurant hub and closes

at 21h20 and Sandton station, encircled by restaurants like Pigalle, Hard Rock Café and Slow in the City closes at 21h35. The Centurion, Pretoria and Hatfield stations will also get you far. The Centurion Gautrain Station is very close to the SuperSport Park Cricket Stadium and the Leriba Hotel and closes at 21h15. The Pretoria Gautrain Station closes at 21h20 and is close to Pretoria Central, Muckleneuk, Sunnyside and Arcadia and Hatfield’s Gautrain station is where most students will be getting on and off. The latter is close to TUKS, Aandklas, Moloko Club and more and it closes at 21h30. Getting around in two of the major cities of the country has never been so easy. You can get your Gautrain card at any of the ticket vending machines at the stations or the ticket offices. Also, remember to download the Gautrain app to stay up to date with its schedules. 1 www.gautrain.co.za

A

side from that, travel safety is also a factor worth considering as more and more vehicles on the roads aren’t roadworthy. Driving between Pretoria and Johannesburg at night is quite a scary affair and with the new laws on drinking and driving it is even more nerve-racking. Then we can also talk about environmental impact and the footprint you leave when you drive your own car versus taking transport like the Gautrain. You might say that one person can’t make a difference but imagine what we can do if every person who thinks that way starts making a difference?

With traffic and the recent hike in petrol prices, it’s inevitable that people will be looking at ways to save time and money when it comes to travelling.

Salsify at The Roundhouse has quickly LOVES become a bucket-list table to secure well in advance on arrival in Cape, for good reason: the magical setting up on a steep road on the lower slopes of Lion’s Head overlooking Camps Bay’s leafy glen to the ocean and Twelve Apostles mountains is well worth the trek for Luke Dale-Roberts and Ryan Cole’s inventive sevencourse tasting menu. Every course shows phenomenal attention to detail, regardless of whether the star ingredient is locally reared quail or asparagus. Dishes like scallop with pomegranate and fried onion, Peking duck breast with salted sour plum and walnut salsa, and lavender peaches with macadamia nut ice cream will leave an impression you won’t soon forget, and despite exquisite plating and novel presentation, nothing is overworked or overcomplicated. If you opt to order à la carte, don’t miss The Salsify Chocolate Bar for dessert, best washed down with some of the small-batch house gin. We highly recommend the wine-pairing option for an extra-special spoil.

The Instagram moment: The dining room has been kept beautifully classic with white tablecloths and Persian rugs, but the entrance room and back lounge that have been given an electric shock with some more modern graffiti by Louis Villiers is what will really catch your eye.

Located on Cape Town’s gourmet boulevard, otherwise known as Bree Street, the new-look Bocca is buzzing with a new Italian-inspired energy with husband-and-wife team Guido and Adnana Brambilla running the show. Regulars trust that the small plates that will emerge from the kitchen off the carefully curated menu that lends itself to group sharing will be close to a religious experience in terms of punchy flavours and contrasting textures. Chef Guido’s tapas draw on frequent globe-trotting, a passion for authentic Italian ingredients and the ease that comes from chefs cooking the sort of food they love to eat. Highlights include the stracciatella and salumi ‘bites’, the Bocca pizza adorned with prosciutto crudo, stracciatella, artichokes and thyme, and the baked fusilli ragu layered with traditional beef and pork ragout, rosemary béchamel, Parmesan and provolone. As a plus, the wine list is well considered and the bartender knows how to make a mean Aperol Spritz. ucked away in an exclusive residential part of Stellenbosch, Makaron Restaurant is the show pony of the venerable Majeka House & Spa. The quirky oasis created by interior expert Etienne Hanekom is a designer’s paradise that melds disparate décor ideas seamlessly – it’s a beautiful setting in which to enjoy inspired food while learning a bit about South Africa’s star ingredients. Here, chef Lucas Carstens aces exquisite ‘dust-to-delicious’ combinations like mock abalone mushroom and tjokka, baby marrow and kapokbos, and Karoo lamb and groenboontjiebredie. We recommend ordering six or seven small plates and trying a little bit of everything on the menu. Don’t be concerned about leaving hungry – while the plates are small, the portions are indeed more generous than most other tapas-style dining spots and each morsel is packed with flavour. What’s more, not being located on a wine farm means the restaurant isn’t limited when it comes to wines they can serve, so you can look forward to superb food and wine pairings.

Braamfontein as a whole is overflowing with beautifully intricate pieces boasting vivid designs and attention-grabbing colours and is also one of the first places to embrace street art as a form of gentrification. All the way from the Wits Art Museum to de Korte Street, some of the best graffiti can be found flanking the busy streets. In 2013 handfuls of artists came from Spain to make their mark on the suburb and contributed to the beautiful mural Hello Pretoria • May 2019 • Hellopretoria.co.za

that can be found under the bridge on Smit Street. It is also here that you’ll find pieces from renowned locals such as Falko, Kevin Love and Bias. The Newtown Bridge is home to some of the most amazing graffiti and street art displays in town with works from both international artists and local creatives alike. On this wall, and surrounds, you’ll find work from the infamous Tapz who’s tags and illustrations can be seen scattered across random locations in Johannesburg. Other local artists who have made their mark on this iconic wall include industry expert and tattoo artist Rasty, Faith 47, who has also exhibited in New York, and Mars. Maboneng has been a major gamechanger in shifting the general opinion of street art from being perceived as an eyesore to something locals just can’t get enough of. These murals and exhibits have become a main attraction and have played a major part in the upliftment of this area. Arts on Main in Maboneng is a

prime example of this. The area boasts works by Falko, Kevin Love, and ROA from Belgium, who specialises in painting wildlife on the sides of skyscrapers. While on your street art tour be sure to pop in for a drink at The Artivist, one of the trendiest new spots in town. It’s a celebration of all things creative, with chic grey walls that offset it's art, soothing music that creates a unified bar atmosphere and the lingering aroma of ‘Afro-nomadic’ food. 7 Reserve Street, Braamfontein 1 011 339 1647 And don’t leave before popping into Swallows Inn in Ferreirasdorp for a visit to Joburg’s oldest Chinese restaurant where you’ll be greeted by old-school traditional ‘décor’ reminiscent of downtown Jozi in the 60s and 70s. WEBAFRICA CEO

TIM WYATT-GUNNING

Tim joined Webafrica as CEO in 2011. English by birth (with an unfortunate accent),Tim is otherwise South African, and a Webafrican to his core.Tim moved to Cape Town in 1998 to found Storm Telecom with Tim Parsonson.Ten years later, in 2008, they sold Storm to Vox Telecom (complete with 6,000 business customers and almost 200 staff situated across the country). After dabbling in non-internet start-ups for a couple of years following that,Tim realised he wasn’t very good at much else. So, when he was introduced to Webafrica, he knew he had found his calling, and grabbed at the opportunity to invest in and run this super ISP-in-the-making. He’s not a techie, but he knows what customers want and spends his time trying to give them exactly that.

What sets Webafrica apart from its competition? Our culture is all about being human in a very techie world. We realise our customers don’t want to understand the complexities behind their internet connection, they just want us to sort it out and make it work. Our big rule is that “We don’t speak Geek’. So it’s OK if you’re 70 and need an extra 10 minutes on the phone for us to help you get your problem fixed. What does Webafrica value most as a brand? Individuality. We hire individuals, not CV’s. We believe that our customers will only be "wowed" by their interactions with us if we provide memorable service, and to be memorable you need to be different. Which is why we use our curious looking chubby bloke with crazy hair in all our advertising!

When it comes to the company, what are you most proud of ? I don’t think ‘proud’ is the right word because we still have lots to do before we can sit back and contemplate our success. I think we’ve done a pretty good job in simplifying the internet for our tens of thousands of customers who don’t want to understand the complexities of it! What should customers know when choosing an internet provider? They should choose an ISP which offers great service and great prices. There are over 100 ISP’s in South Africa, most of which we have never heard of …. Which isn’t to say they’re not good at what they do but it’s quite a cut-throat industry and size does matter! A good simplistic way to check out if you’re making a good choice is to check the ISP’s website:  If the website looks outdated, the ISP is probably behind the times which means you’re not getting the best bang for your buck.  If the website doesn’t have a ‘checkout cart’, the ISP is paying people to do the job which is expensive and means they will struggle to remain competitive.  If the website offers you everything from website design, website hosting through to cheap phone calls and cell phones, they probably won’t be as able to give you cheap, fast, reliable internet access – trust me, we’ve been there! What do you hope to achieve within the next year? More and more happy customers. Which three words best describe your work philosophy? Absolutely love it. K www.webafrica.co.za

Tell us more about Webafrica and your involvement as CEO. When I took over Webafrica in 2011 it was already 12 years old. The truth is it was a great company operating in a really boring space because in those days the internet wasn’t as essential to everyone’s lives as it is today. In 2019 the internet is an essential utility alongside water and electricity. It’s immensely exciting for us to be one of the biggest ISP’s providing super-fast fibre and LTE internet access to the whole country.
