foreword

What is your favourite and most

Instagrammable spot in Pretoria?

on offer at Hazel Food Market! Gets my stomach grumbling every time!

Hello, Pretoria! Autumn is coming, HP and I seriously don’t think I’m ready. Last year I decluttered our home (partially because of my nesting phase during my pregnancy and partially because there really was just too much stuff) and now I have to start shopping for winter attire as I barely have anything left! (Any tips for bargains are welcome!) Decluttering is, however a necessary part of life and I often find that I feel so much lighter after I’ve decluttered – whether it’s my closet or my heart. It’s like a new season; a blank page. In our March issue you will find more than one way to unwind and declutter in and around Pretoria. We tell you a bit more about the newly launched REAL Spa by Forever Resorts where you can spa away all your troubles – even if it’s just for a day. We share some insights on the healing properties of Rooibos as many people’s go-to for a quick escape is a good old cup of Rooibos tea. We tell you about an engineer gone baker who successfully decluttered her life from doing what she disliked, and we share some of our favourite dining hotspots to escape to this month. Sometimes decluttering also means coming clean and coming out, which is why the Moffie film that will start screening in cinemas nationwide this month is so suited for our cover. New month, new season, new page. Read all about it on pages six and seven. Decluttering could sometimes be a scary affair, which is why Hello Pretoria is there to guide you on the way. Read it as you indulge in that cup of Rooibos this month and let us know what you thought of this issue on social media. Happy reading, HP!

A month filled with sugar, spice and all things nice! BLESS YOUR COTTON SOCKS Interested in knowing where this saying comes from? It comes not from the cotton material, but from George Edward Lynch Cotton. In 1858 as Bishop of Calcutta, Mr. Cotton created schools for Eurasian children. As part of his philanthropy, he ordered dozens of pairs of socks to be sent over for the children, blessing them on arrival. And so, Dave Hutchinson followed in his footsteps because for every pair of sexy socks sold, one pair of school socks is given to a child in need. They also have a new range! Read all about it online.

RISE IN RED The alternative rock band, Rise in Red’s new single compliments the emotionally charged style and distinctive sound for which they gained fame in the first place and the title of the song sounds almost prophetic. “Progression” is about someone struggling with life, death, faith and the question 'what happens next?' "This is essentially the story of progress through life,” explains the group's lead guitarist, Jayson Reynolds. "It's also a theme song for us, expanding on our journey - the path to realizing our album dream was definitely full of interesting twists."

Moffie A harrowing look into the secret identity of a

homosexual conscript in the 1980s

Brümmer) is an eighteen-year-old English-speaking white boy struggling to come to terms with his sexuality. Toxic masculinity has the upper hand in the dorms, showers and out in the field and derogatory slurs are evident in most scenes. When a situation between a same sex couple arises in the camp, the consequences are bone-chilling. Nicholas knows that he now must hide his true self more than ever as homosexuality is regarded as a crime against the nation and God, and men suspected of being gay are viciously humiliated.

S

et in 1981 during South Africa’s border conflict with communistbacked Angola, the film Moffie, which starts screening nationwide from 13 March, revolves around a conscript who must embark on compulsory military service. With a brilliant rendition of Sugarman by Rebekah Thompson (originally by Sixto Rodriguez whose work was a rallying point for South African counterculture and anti-apartheid in the 70s and 80s) you will most certainly be taken on an emotional journey. Brutal scenes accurately portray how boys were taught who to love and who to hate and what effect it had on their emotional state. Nicholas (Kai Luke

Hello Pretoria • March 2020 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

When Nicholas meets a fellow conscript, Dylan Stassen (Ryan de Villiers) the film takes on a softer tone and there are but a few glimpses of their companionship. The hardships faced in the camp are at times difficult to watch and by the time they go to the border to face an even harsher reality, there is almost a visible sigh of relief. Tackling themes such as homophobia, racism and toxic masculinity, this film should serve as an eye-opener to all South Africans. The aim of this film is to start a conversation about prejudice and ignorance. We need to take a hard, long look at ourselves and what we teach our children. Moffie is the winner of The Mermaid Award (best LGBTQI-themed film) at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival and was nominated for the Orizzonti Prize and the Queer Lion Award at the Venice International Film Festival. It received a six-minute-long standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival! This film can undoubtedly be a breakthrough in our preconceived notions about alternative lifestyle choices.

Moffie is a harrowing look into the secret identity of a homosexual conscript in the 1980’s. In this drama award-winning director, Oliver Hermanus explores a diversity of themes that encapsulates a young, gay military conscript and his friend trying to remain invisible.

5 Minutes with Kai Tell us more about yourself, your acting career and how you landed the role of Nicholas van der Swart? I graduated from UCT with my Theatre and Performance Honours at the end of 2016 and worked mainly in theatre prior to Moffie. I now do a mixture of both international and local theatre and film. The casting process for Moffie was extensive and I was seen for multiple roles over a year period - I was ecstatic when I finally got the call for Nicholas. What does the film mean to you personally? This film is about my father’s generation. My father went to the army and only after seeing the film did he start telling me about the traumas he had experienced. So, for me this film is about heritage, how we address this heritage and how we ensure that we don’t make the same mistakes again. What challenges did you face when portraying the role? Playing a role that is as intense as this always takes a toll on your emotional state. I think the difficulty for me was keeping ‘Kai' out of it and focusing on what was true for Nicholas, no matter what that meant for me. Which of the scenes in the film resonates with you personally? For me the last scene of the film resonates most deeply. I unfortunately can’t tell you what it is, because... Spoilers! What is your wish for the outcome of this film? I hope this film can provide a sense of catharsis, stimulate a debate and challenge the audience to reconsider some of their preconceptions. Hello Pretoria • March 2020 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

Durbanville Hills’ entire valley has come alive with tractors brimming with freshly, hand-picked grapes and the most wonderful aroma in the air and they want to share this with you! Interested in the winemaking process from vine to wine? Durbanville Hills provides a glimpse into this process every Wednesday until the 18th of March. To capture “Draíocht na Farraige” (the magic of the sea) An Dúlamán is produced by combining five locally harvested seaweeds: Sweet Kombu, Dulse, Pepper Dulse, Dulaman and superfood Carrageen Moss. These are then mixed with six botanicals: juniper, coriander, angelica, sweet orange, lemon and cassia and after a particularly precise distillation process, the end result is a spirit that captures fresh juniper, an umami richness and the dry tang of a sea breeze. It’s perfectly paired with seafood and sushi.

The Glen Gables Centre’s Housewives' Market (right next to Rock@88) is probably one of Lynnwood’s best kept secrets. Here you can buy anything from fresh fruits, nuts, confectionery and a variety of traditional Portuguese items.

DINING

To let you in on a little secret, Lynnwood has the best sushi restaurant in all of Pretoria! Feng Yi, situated at the Glenfair Centre has the most amazing sushi at the most affordable prices and you’re sure to bump into us there! stablished in the 1960’s, Lynnwood was once the most Eastern part of Pretoria and although the city has expanded considerably since then, Lynnwood is still one of Pretoria’s most favoured neighborhoods. With lush, tranquil suburbs, upmarket shops and restaurants, this neighborhood proves to be the perfect place to settle down, yet still be part of the city life.

MEET

IVAN VAN ZYL THE VODACOM BULLS’ SCRUM HALF

He represented the Blue Bulls from as early as primary school level and has been breaking barriers ever since. Tell us more about your childhood? I grew up in Pretoria, so this has always been my home. I was in Magalieskruin Primary School and then went on to Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool (Affies), just across the road from Loftus so it really feels like home and I simply love being here. Always loved sport, played rugby and cricket and did athletics as well, but going into High School I was a little more focused on my rugby as it was the area I excelled in, but I still loved participating in the other sports too. I was fortunate to grow up in a home with a lot of support and guidance. How old were you when you knew that you wanted to be a pro rugby player one day? I always loved rugby and was lucky enough to be good at it from a young age. I think the first time I knew that playing rugby can be a reality one day was when I was 12 years old. It's the first year that you can play for the Blue Bulls at age group level and I was fortunate enough to be the captain of that team. It has always been a dream to play for the Vodacom Bulls. Who is your hero or where do you draw inspiration from? I have different heroes in different aspects of my life. In rugby, Fourie du Preez has always been someone I looked up to and tried to learn from as much as I possibly could.

Words Carli Manser Images Supplied

How are you feeling about the upcoming season? Very excited! There has been quite a lot of change from last year, but it makes the challenge all that greater. For me, personally, it's all about striving to become better every day. Working as hard as I possibly can to help my team succeed. What is your favorite dining spot in South Africa? That’s a difficult one, but it depends on my mood. Burger Bistro in Hazeldean, Pretoria is a definite favourite as I love the atmosphere there. Blos Café is also a lovely spot for breakfast. What do you love most about Pretoria? I have been here my whole life. It simply is home. My friends and family are here and I really wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

Ivan’s message to his fans: Live a life that overflows with THANKFULNESS! We always have something to be thankful for. We serve a God who is constant, loyal and who will never abandon you. He chose you, we have a lot to be thankful for!

Baby it’s the weekend! Our top two places to help you survive weekends with baby Some parents dread it, while others count down the hours. It’s completely acceptable to have a love-hate relationship with the weekends once you have a little one. We thought we would assist with cabin fever and create our very own baby bucket list on what to do in and around the city.

On Saturdays they serve an all-day farm fresh brunch buffet from 08h00 to 15h00. And did we mention that you can shop their local produce like eggs, milk, cheese, biscuits and all from local suppliers? Best for babe: If your babe is a glutton or gastronome, good news – all children under the age of five eat for free from the buffet all day long. There are awesome antique tractors to explore, state-of-the-art jungle gyms and farm animals too.

ROOIBOS IN ALL ITS GLORY

This dainty-leaved bush holds astonishing health benefits We often hear about expats from South Africa longing for a cup of Rooibos tea – a taste of home. There’s more than meets the taste buds with this amazing herbal beverage, though. •

Ageing: The popular quail experiment shows the extent of Rooibos’ anti-ageing benefits. Some quails were given Rooibos with their food and they were able to lay more eggs and had a longer lifespan than the quails on a standard diet.

With Rooibos being a proudly South African product, what more reason do we need to consume this magical, delicious drink?

Heatstruck?

16

Cancer: Rooibos acts as a chemo preventor in skin cancer. The phenolic compounds in Rooibos tea extracts have a strong antimutagenic effect.

Stress: Rooibos tea lowers the production of cortisol by the human body’s adrenal glands. It contains two rare components, aspalathin and nothofagin, that directly contribute to the stresslowering effect.

Hypertension: Not only does Rooibos extract have blood pressure lowering capabilities, it is also great for overall cardiovascular health.

Obesity: The polyphenols in Rooibos show a decrease in the formation of fatty tissue and it can also slow down metabolism.

Rooibos and berry iced tea: l l l l l l l

3 Rooibos tea bags 3 cups water, 1 boiling, 2 cold 1.5 cups raspberries 3-4 tbsp sugar (or to taste) 1tsp vanilla bean paste or use a Rooibos-Vanilla tea infusion instead 8 mint leaves Ice cubes, fresh raspberries and lemon wedges for serving

Make the tea using 1 cup of boiling water and three tea bags. Set aside for a few minutes to steep. Then remove the tea bags and add the remaining cold water. Set aside to cool. Heat up the raspberries, sugar and vanilla in a saucepan for 2-3 minutes, stirring often. Put the mixture through a sieve by squashing the fruit to help separate the pulp and juice from the seeds. Once the tea has cooled completely, add the raspberry mixture, lemon juice and mint leaves. Drop in fresh raspberries and a couple of lemon wedges and serve with ice cubes. xcept for the fact that Rooibos is naturally caffeine- and sugar free, it contains extremely high levels of antioxidants - powerful substances that fight free radicals in the bloodstream and keep us healthy and strong. That’s just the beginning of this powerhouse of a beverage. Rooibos can help alleviate symptoms of a variety of diseases:

A series of studies conducted by the University of Ottawa found that consuming a hot drink on a summer day lowers the amount of heat stored by the body, provided that the sweat produced by the hot beverage can evaporate. This is however only possible in conditions where the sweat can evaporate and not in hot, humid weather. In sunny Pretoria, drinking a cup of tea might just be the answer to the sometimes unbearable heat!

Brasserie DE PARIS

The pièce de résistance of French fine dining

An exquisite French-inspired culinary experience, situated in a uniquely-built palace in the heart of Waterkloof. You don’t have to travel all the way to Paris to eat escargot and foie gras - you can have a night in France right here!

T

he royal blue and gold sign outside of the restaurant had us all excited and we were awe-struck by the building’s immaculate mid-Century architecture. With its raw concrete walls and brick ceilings, it has an incredible charm to it. Karl Jooste who finished building this house in 1967, was friends with French architect, Le Corbusier. He visited France regularly, hence the notable French influences.

Words: Carli Manser Images: Supplied

The ambience can only be described as intimate and incredibly romantic. We were seated outside and had a beautiful view of the garden, complete with waterfall and all. It was quite serene. Our table was elegantly set with white linen napery, quaint silverware and candles in candelabra. The service was tremendous as the waiters and hostess were present to cater to our every need without bombarding our romantic evening with superfluous chatter. Classical French music played in the background and when we closed our eyes we could imagine dining under the Eiffel Tower. French Chef, Didier is passionate about constantly creating refined and timeless French dishes, combined with a flair of local produce to provide the ultimate French dining experience in the heart of Pretoria. His aim is to bring the grandeur of Paris to your plate and he does it o so well! We delighted in the 5-course degustation menu with wine pairings and were constantly amazed by the beautiful plating and perfect portions. We started off with a cheesy French onion soup and a crispy seeded roll, then we indulged in burgundy escargots with mushrooms and bacon and potato croquettes, a quick grapefruit sorbet to give our palates a cleanse before we had the most delectable sea bass with a potato pancake, asparagus, mussels and saffron aioli sauce. What a mouthful! But wait, there’s more... Then followed a cheese plate with unique nut bread made from egg whites and no flour. The meal was elegantly ended off with a deliciously baked french croissant: Red fruit macarons with mulled wine syrup, champagne jelly, chantilly cream, raspberry sorbet and fresh

berries! Paired with carefully selected wines, this was an unforgettable culinary experience! Brasserie de Paris is the perfect spot for an anniversary, proposal, birthday or just to celebrate life. The whimsical ambience entices you and the cuisine is out of this world (no, wait, it’s French)! Bon appétit!

ITALIAN - STYLE BASA from UCook

e recently tested out the UCook box and what a treat! There are three different options to choose from: Easy Peasy, Health Nut and Vegetarian. You can choose between 12 seasonally inspired recipes every week. All ingredients are delivered to your door and therefore you can have restaurant-quality meals every single night! All of the ingredients are locally sourced, organic and seasonal, which in turn makes it so much better for you! Needless to say, every night was date night for us as we just had so much fun cooking the most delectable, healthy meals together. We indulged in beef rump and tzatsiki slaw, exotic Moroccan lamb and Chinese pork and soba noodles, but the Italian-style Basa was our favourite. The quality of the meat and produce were outstanding and the UCook experience definitely comes highly recommended! Italian-style Basa Serves 4 400g Basa fish fillets 160ml basil pesto 20g fresh basil 320g baby tomatoes 300ml bulgur wheat 480g baby marrows 80g butter lettuce 40ml balsamic vinegar Butter Step 1: Boil the kettle. Submerge the bulgur wheat in 600ml boiled water. Drizzle with olive oil, fork through some seasoning, cover with cling film and set aside to steam for 15-20 minutes until cooked. On completion, fluff up with a fork and season to taste. Step 2: Halve the baby tomatoes. Place them in a bowl with a drizzle of oil, season well and set aside. Halve the baby marrow lengthways, then cut into 2-3cm chunks on the diagonal. Place a nonstick pan over medium heat with a drizzle of oil. Fry the baby marrow for 5 minutes, shifting occasionally, until golden. Remove from the pan, place in a large salad bowl and season. Step 3: Return the pan over a medium-high heat with a drizzle of oil and a knob of butter. When hot, fry the Basa for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden and cooked through. Remove from the pan and season.

Step 5: Time to plate up! Make a bed of green leaves and loaded bulgur and stop with the golden Basa. Garnish with the basil leaves, dollop over the remaining pesto and finish off with some balsamic vinegar. Buon Appetito!

HONEY BEE

BAKER The bee’s knees!

The engineer turned baker, Melissa du Plessis has been breaking boundaries in baking since 2016. Her success speaks volumes of her incredible talent and her witty personality.

Words: Carli Manser Images: Lemon Leaf Photography

M

elissa du Plessis is a qualified industrial engineer and self-taught baker. She has never been able to pull her natural sweet tooth and has been baking ever since she can remember. Due to a lack of sugary treats in the house, Melissa started to make small batches of fudge, cakes, cupcakes and puddings to satisfy her cravings.

can expect a swiss meringue buttercream smooth, delectable and not overly sweet. She is slowly, but surely making a good name for herself within the wedding industry. Her style is clean and uncomplicated, yet absolutely breathtaking. She recently even baked a box of macaroons for Hanri Human as part of a wedding gift for Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters.

Even though she worked in the field of engineering, her passion for baking never died. In fact, she started sending her baked treats with her husband to share with his colleagues. There was an instant interest and she received her first official order in October 2016.

Melissa is excited to introduce Honey Bespoke, as part of her business. Here, the sole focus will be on exquisite and unique cakes that push the boundaries of edible art. She is also on the hunt for a space where she can offer classes that include cake-decorating and macaroon-baking, among others.

Her name, Melissa comes from the Greek word ‘Meli’ which means honey bee. Hence, her husband would call her ‘Bytjie’ (Bee). When the baking started taking over their kitchen on a regular basis, he started calling her ‘Heuning Bytjie Bakker’, which has quite a nice ring to it. Dreaming big about crossing borders one day, they settled on the English version: Honey Bee Baker. Honey Bee Baker specialises in wedding cakes, but also provides lovely little treats like macarons, cakesicles, meringue pops, floral lollies and cinnabun boxes. Her cakes are a big hit and has been the focal point of numerous weddings. Melissa doesn’t use traditional buttercream icing. Instead, you

Melissa lives her life according to Victor Hugo’s saying: “Life is the flower, for which love is the honey.” We can’t wait to see what her next project will entail! For Nicolas, who grew up in the Greek community, it was important to create a space where people can come together and relax while sharing a meal and he wanted to make that meal exquisite! All Filos’ ingredients are imported from Greece - from the vine leaves to the olive oil. Nicolas is passionate about food, but more so about people. He wants you to bring your whole family for this culinary adventure. At this eatery you are engulfed in a fusion of coral, burgundy and turquoise. Scents of an array of spices linger in the air and you can feel your tummy grumbling as you enter. Tried and tested We tasted the samosas, served with a lime and mint chili chutney, sesame and garlic naan, served with lamb chops, the out-of-this-world chicken biryani and finally: Kashmiri pink tea served with coconut flakes, almonds and crushed pistachios. What an incredibly authentic experience!

We were treated to the full Greek experience which started off with pre-dinner ouzo. You should definitely practice getting accustomed to this strong liquorice-smelling drink! We then indulged in authentic Mediterranean cuisine - from spanakopita with spinach, feta and cheese to halloumi, kebabs, fried calamari, keftedes, dolmades, pita with tzatziki and the freshest Greek salad. Food absolutely fit for a king! Your experience doesn’t have to stop here as Filos stocks a wide variety of Greek goodies that you can purchase to take home with you as well. Kali orexi!

The Spice Queens are open from 09:00 to 18:00 daily and even serve a “build-your-own-breakfast." Soon they will also release budget-friendly meals, seeing as they are situated at Duncan Yard in Hatfield, also known as Student Central.

Filos regularly hosts Greek evenings. At R250 per person, you can expect a live band, belly dancers, free ouzo and a Greek buffet. You can even break a few plates in true Greek style!

Tried and tested We decided to try out the beer and gin tasting platters during our visit. Consisting of six tasters, the beer is definitely something we would recommend to all first-time visitors. You can expect a Weiss, Lager, a cherry beer that tastes like a fizz pop and a beer brewed by monks! The gin platter, also with six tasters, had a variety of enticing infusions like strawberry and black pepper and rosemary and orange amongst others. We decided to try out Capital Craft’s new Italianinspired burgers as well – who drinks without dining these days? Think grilled chicken with bacon, mozzarella, balsamic-glazed tomatoes and basil pesto. Or a succulent beef patty with cheddar, truffle-eggplant tapenade and a poached egg. The atmosphere is electric as the music holds the perfect rhythm to get your heartbeat pumping and shake your booty to. At the Beach is famous for their vibe and there is a vibe, indeed. With the laughter and chatter of friends and family in the background and the music flowing freely, it definitely feels like you’re chilling on the beach.

ROCKY HORROR

SHOW Lights, Camera, Glam!

Rocky Horror has been captivating audiences for 47 years and the momentum has yet to have been altered. The show sits at the crossroad where Glam Rock disappeared and Punk began, and we guarantee that it will make you shiver with antici...pation!

The show tells a story of a newly engaged couple, Brad and Janet, getting caught in a heavy storm with a flat tire. They decide to look for shelter and the possibility of a phone call and that’s how they end up in the home of the mad transvestite scientist, Dr. Frank-N-Furter. As they get indoctrinated by his charm and vigour, their innocence is lost and they are both changed forever. Through elaborate dancing and rock tunes, they meet a houseful of wild characters, including the hunchback Riff Raff, the vivacious Magenta and the over-the-top Columbia. Dr. FrankN-Furter also reveals his newest creature to the crowd - a muscular man named Rocky Horror.

30

This global phenomenon was created by Richard O’Brien, a jobless actor, singer and sci-fi fan who loved 50s horror movies. “At the time of its conception, one of my great joys was watching late night television Hello Pretoria • March 2020 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

when sensible people were in bed. At that time the TV stations went off air at around midnight hour and, consequently, they aired many of those creaky old B movies and sci-fi films from the fifties as they knew that their viewing audiences were mainly made up of lost souls, insomniacs and drunks. What joy!” says Richard. The first performance in the 63-seat upstairs stage at London’s Royal Court Theatre was so successful that the next show was held at the 230-seat Chelsea Classic Theatre and two months later, it was performed at the 500-seat Kings Road Theatre. Since then, the world’s most sexual rock ’n roll musical has been mesmerizing audiences for 47 years, showcasing in more than 30 countries, translated into 20 languages! Apart from its cult status, The Rocky Horror Show is also widely known to have been an influence on countercultural and sexual liberation movements. It was one of the first popular musicals to depict fluidsexuality during a time of division between generations and a lack of acceptance in people with different sexual orientations. So, if you ever get the chance, join in the fun and sing and dance to tracks like Sweet Transvestite, Dammit Janet and, of course, the timeless, booty-shaking The Time-Warp.

Laugh a little with these humorous activities: • Toilet paper icebreaker: To play, pass a roll of toilet paper around and have everyone rip off how much they would usually use. Everyone will probably think it’s crazy! When the toilet paper makes it all the way around the circle, have everyone count their squares. The number of squares each person took is the number of fun facts they must reveal about themselves. This will, without a doubt, entice a few giggles! •

The shoe icebreaker: As everyone arrives, let them put one of their shoes in a basket by the door. Later on, distribute all the shoes. Everyone has 2 minutes to find their shoes’ partner and then they have 5 minutes to strike up a conversation (hopefully about something other than shoes!) The Instagram icebreaker: Let each person in the group choose a snap from their Instagram that has a funny connotation. This will certainly cause a laugh and showcase more of the person’s personality and life.

These handy tips can be used in large or

small groups, business or casual meetings, by event organisers, party planners and even just friends planning a braai! Some interesting facts to impress your newly made friends with:

FIVE TRENDS TO IMPACT BUSINESS AND CONFERENCING TRAVEL IN 2020

Compiled by: Carli Manser Images: Supplied

As predicted by Garnet Basson, chief operating officer at The Capital Hotels and Apartments The hospitality industry is feeling the crunch of the current economic climate, with conferencing venues in particular seeing a change in booking patterns. Here are five trends predicted for 2020.

Business travelers don’t go to a hotel because they like it – their acquisition teams choose hotels that deliver value and meet their objectives. They also choose hotels that are flexible with price, and who are open to discussion and negotiation around creating the best possible solution to the traveler's needs.

Conferences are shorter than ever before, with tighter budgets keeping focus on the business at hand and social and entertainment activities kept to a minimum. Agendas are shorter and more focused, with events that used to be four days now condensed into two. The venues that offer conferencing and social amenities on site, with spacious rooms or apartments for guests to make the most of their time away from home, will be first choice.

This ‘shrinkage’ of conferencing has also been encouraged through developments in technology. Platforms like Skype and Zoom make it possible for people to engage virtually face to face, removing the need for frequent team breakaways. Venues that offer a full technology and communications array will benefit from conferencing organisers that are achieving a blend of traditional and technology-enabled formats.

Industrywide- and themed events are growing in popularity, with multiple role players finding value in engaging in an off-site context. These conferences and expo’s stimulate networking and sales opportunities, and venues that can offer expo floors and breakaway rooms for one on one meetings will be the top choice.

Procurement teams have realised that booking aggregators don’t necessarily always secure the best deal, having realised that direct relationships with accommodation providers may yield better prices and improved value for money.

Lynn van d

STYLISH URBAN LIVING MADE AFFORDABLE

On your next free Saturday, be sure to pay a visit to Timberer, a business that started because of a passion.

Timberer’s focus is to provide a high-quality product at a reasonable price. Their main products are made from solid wood and they create sophisticated and modern designs by combining the wood with the raw essence of metal and glass. The furniture has a distinctive look and often become statement pieces. Lynn is hands-on and the self-proclaimed quality controller at Timberer. She recently started focusing on some smaller décor items as well, including tablecloths, pillow covers and candles which they make themselves. The store is also filled with gorgeous decorative items that will complement your Timberer piece. “This business started because of a passion. I am a Libra, so I have a passion for beautiful things,” says Lynn. Lynn keeps her clients updated throughout the whole production process, as she feels that it’s important to keep her clients in the loop.

Hello Pretoria • March 2020 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

She loves seeing a client’s face light up when they receive their delivery. 2020 is a big year for Timberer as they want to start doing their own upholstery. Lynn will also start to work closely with an interior designer so that Timberer can become a one-stop interior shop.

Why wood is such a magnificent choice for your furniture: • • •

Wood is a living material- It breathes, it moves (shrinks and swells), it adds a natural fragrance to a space and it changes colour. It has characteristic grain patterns, knots, checks and shakes. These are features and not defects. Take time to understand them. It has a gorgeous look and feel, it has warmth and its imperfect features make it unique. Remember that each piece of timber tells the story of a tree!

ynamic duo, Lynn and her husband Johan van der Hoff started Timberer to provide good-quality wooden furniture to young and upcoming individuals. They saw a gap in the market when their daughter got married in 2013 and they - like any young married couple - wanted to furnish their home. The furniture was so expensive, however, that they could not afford to do it all at once. So, Johan and Lynn decided to build a dining table with a server for them.

ELISE SERFONTEIN

Elise is the director and founder of StopRhinoPoaching.com. She has always had a passion for wildlife, but her purpose and life goal is to stop the relentless poaching of our rhino’s and to conserve these majestic creatures for future generations.

Please share a little bit about your background. I have loved nature and wildlife as far back as I can remember, which can be attributed to my parents who spent hours with me as a little girl, teaching me the names of birds and animals. My dad passed away from leukemia when I was five years old, but from around that age my sole ambition in life was to work with birds, which I did for many years after finishing school. How did you get into anti-rhino poaching? Through a dear friend in the “bird world” I became involved in the wildlife industry, working for the Wildlife Translocation Association of South Africa. During my 4 odd years there, I was introduced to the aviation side of the wildlife industry and spent a further 8 years working for a helicopter company that specialized in wildlife work. During these years I got to understand how the industry works and grew an important network of people in private and state parks. Starting StopRhinoPoaching.com literally was a moment of waking up and being hit by what I had to do. When I became aware that helicopters were being used at the time to poach rhino it really hit a nerve and I knew that there was something I needed to be doing.

When I woke up, it was like an epitome hit me. Flashing in my mind’s eye, I had to build a website and I knew what that website needed to do. Clear as day. So I started, and that was 10 years ago. What are some your biggest challenges? Organised crime is very hard to fight. It is subtle and sinister, or glaringly blatant. It evolves and evades and takes an enormous amount of dedicated time and resources to disrupt, let alone dismantle. Our rhinos are in trouble, and 12 years down the line, the guys on the ground are genuinely exhausted. What makes stoprhinopoaching. com stand out from the crowd and different from other anti-poaching / conservation NPOs? Very deep trust relationships with the men on the ground means that we have an intimate knowledge of the evolving poaching threat. This means we can make good judgement calls with fund placement. Our donors are people, companies and other NGO’s who want to make a difference. They trust our judgment and we are the “middle-man” between the people who want to help, and those that are doing an admirable job to keep rhinos alive.

Tell us why and how you started stoprhinopoaching.com? In March, 2010, a friend called to say there had been what appeared to be another helicopter poaching. Three rhino's dead, their bodies lying next to each other in a huddle. I was dumbstruck and devastated as the flying world was relatively small and I did not understand who could be that cruel. It was a Sunday afternoon and I literally cried myself to sleep.

Why is it important to conserve the things that make South Africa unique? The rhino is a symbol for all our wild spaces and South Africa is the last stronghold. Ancient, strong, majestic yet extremely vulnerable. Whether we realise it or not, we are all connected to nature. Our survival depends on it. If we let it slip, there is no getting it back 1 www.stoprhinopoaching.com.
