New year, new city is what it’s all about in

January. What would you do to improve Pretoria as a city?

Hello Pretoria is published by Spinner Communications (Pty) Ltd. Established in 1980 Hellopretoria.co.za Pretoria’s nightlife Spinnercom.com

is lacking, and I feel a couple speakeasy bars would add a nice touch. Hopefully the guys at Sin & Taxes are reading this…

PUBLISHER Justyn Spinner EDITOR Renate Engelbrecht renate@spinnercom.com LIFESTYLE EDITOR Bianca Spinner

Hello, Pretoria! It’s a new decade! Doesn’t 2020 just sound like the year of greatness? With this year comes a lot of new things, including our second-born who should be with us any time soon. I believe that, like with naming a baby, you speak life into something when you call it something specific. I call 2020 the year of greatness, because I believe this will be the year that turns things around for South Africa, the year where you (and I) will find a way to balance life in order to spend more quality time with family, the year in which Hello Pretoria will go from strength to strength, the year that everyone will refer to as the year of greatness. My wish is that the passion and oomph that we are entering the year with, will not die out along the way, but grow as the year progresses and lead to great things. My dream is that we will all have an unfailing desire to see the good in life and the heart to make even the smallest things better. Step by step – that’s how you eventually achieve greatness, isn’t it? Speaking of – this month’s theme is New Year, New City and that includes using 2020 as the year to make Pretoria a new city in the sense of environmental and social responsibility. These big words always sound like a big task and can often let you feel you’ve failed even before you’ve started, which is why I say: small steps. Take part in a community outreach and pick up plastic bottles and trash in your nearest park. Go read a book to a lonely granny at the nearest home for the elderly. Bathe and walk a few homeless dogs. If that feels like too much to ask, then start closer to home: Spend quality time with your husband or wife. Make time for coffee and rusks in bed on a Sunday morning. Get your butt of the couch and play touchers or hide and seek in the garden. Or go and explore the Jacaranda City! We’ve got so many really special and unique gems – just have a look at our articles on River Meadow Manor, the Melrose House, Mira Coffee, Lovebird Eats and Treats, Swartskaap Bistro and more. Together we can make this a year of greatness, Pretoria. Let’s do it! Enjoy the read.

#HelloRecommends Exploring the Jacaranda City with Gautrain

In collaboration with Gautrain, Hello Pretoria recently hosted a couple of influencers on a fun day out exploring the Jacaranda City.

W

e hopped onto the Gautrain at the Centurion Gautrain Station on route to the Pretoria Cheese and Wine Festival at 012 Central. Within a matter of minutes, we got off at the Pretoria Gautrain Station, in awe of the beautiful old buildings surrounding us. It was the perfect day for a festival in town and we were treated to some VIP wines and tasters before we headed down to explore the different cheese and wine stands. Here our guests could taste a number of different cheeses including Fancy That’s plant-based, naturally cultured Nut Cheese, Dirla’s labneh and cream cheese and Belnori’s Nederwood cheese.

Kele Mothlamme Q @kele_motlhamme “I’m a busy bee; a workaholic by profession and Gautrain is a glimpse of meditation for me whenever I’m running errands and having a hectic day. The beautiful views and luxurious interior really reduce my anxiety and the cherry on top is that I save so much time compared to sitting in traffic. Being part of the #HelloRecommends Gautrain event was absolutely amazing. The most beautiful experience for me besides the great tasting wine at the Cheese and Wine Festival was meeting more #PeopleOnTheMove who balance work, school, side hustle

PLAKA at Menlyn was just the right eatery for an al fresco lunch. We were treated to a meze feast with delicious Halloumi, Mama’s Meatballs, chicken skewers, crispy zucchini, calamari, pitas with spreads and more and the wine flowed freely while CH2 Guitar Duo treated us to an exclusive, intimate, pop-up performance. With a quick Uber back to the Hatfield Gautrain Station we hopped onto the train towards Centurion again. Some went home for a welldeserved rest and others continued the journey by heading to River Meadow Manor, not far from the station. The guests were treated to dinner in the 1929 manor house, where after they retreated to their rooms and the next morning saw a delicious breakfast buffet under 1000-year-old oak trees.

It was my husband, Kevin’s first time on a train ever, which was quite sentimental for us and it was so special that his first train ride could be on the Gautrain. The food at PLAKA was exotic, delicious and filling and we thoroughly enjoyed the accommodation at River Meadow Manor with its comfy beds and one of the best, spacious showers ever! Words Renate Engelbrecht Images Madison & West Lifestyle; Supplied

Catha might not be able to read yet (she’s only turning two on the 4th of January), but she’s definitely keen on all things pretty. Blame her mom who used Pinterest as a pastime during long breastfeeding sessions.

JUST A MAMMA This helpful, innovative and motivating blog is run by a Pretoria-based mama, Mari-Louise Candiotes. She claims to be married to Mr. Perfect and they have three little girls who fill their home with “joy, messiness, loads of chatter and love.” On her blog she shares the ups and downs, highs and lows, pajama drill moments and awesome tips, finds and things she learns along the way. She includes things their family loves (including eco-friendly finds), what they wear, places they go to, things just for mamma and things for dad and also some fun giveaways like the recent Frozen 2 giveaway in collaboration with Disney Africa.

UPSTREAM BABY Although the blog itself is not so active, Catha is very fond of the pretty things on their online shop. Upstream Baby is slow fashion designed and produced in South Africa. Their garments are made from hemp and cotton and have no zips, studs or buttons. Their tops, bottoms and onesies are cute and comfy at the same time and even though Catha is usually more interested in the friends wearing the clothes in the pictures on Instagram, she is also learning about sustainable wardrobe shopping from a young age. One of his biggest achievements thus far has been to play for the Proteas, especially on the test side. Among others, he has also played for the Momentum Multiply Titans and recently led the Tshwane Spartans as captain during the Mzanzi Super League. Over the last couple of years, Klaasen says Albie Morkel played a very big role in his cricket career. “I really try to learn from him.” Mark Boucher also had a big influence in his career, helping with his batting and the way he thinks about the game. Brendon McCullum is another cricket player whose game has always inspired Klaasen, but “I always knew I had my own style of play and that I wanted to be unique as well.” “I won’t leave Pretoria…The bush is not too far from here. I like the beach, but I burn there quickly so I swim and go back into the shade,” he says laughing. He likes going to the bush, Mozambique or Namibia - off-the-grid type of places where he can escape the busy cricket life and really spend time with his family for a couple of days. Being a professional cricket player has its perks, but it also comes with sacrifices.

Playing mostly over weekends, he’s missed a lot of important family events. “Over Decembers when my family wants to go on holiday, I’m busy playing cricket so there are no family holidays.” There is also no ‘best time’ to go on holiday as cricket is a full-year thing for Klaasen. For him, cricket and other sports in SA is about unity. “That is the only place in the current South Africa where it doesn’t matter where you come from, you’re one team.” Klaasen’s plans for 2020: Getting married in September is his number one priority and then also finishing the rest of the cricket season to the best of his ability. He would also like to spend more time with his family – especially his newly born godchild and his younger brother who just finished school. PREGNANCY FITNESS Staying in shape

O

ne of the biggest challenges is to know which exercises are suitable for pregnancy and even postpartum. “I think pregnant women are hesitant to exercise because there just isn’t enough information about what is safe and also really suitable for pregnancy. A lot of the guidelines that are available are outdated,” says Irene.

16

“The most important exercises for pregnancy in my opinion are core and diaphragmatic breathing exercises to keep the core active and strong and to keep the pelvic floor and diaphragm working as they should. We also focus a lot on keeping the glutes active as pregnancy postures (especially the ‘duck waddle’) can cause the glute muscles to become inactive, which can lead to hip, knee or lower back pain.” No wonder Irene’s Pregnancy Fitness classes are filled with squats, lounges and resistance band work! A strong lower back is very important not only during pregnancy, but also for the demands of motherhood after birth. Motherhood also Hello Pretoria • January 2020 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

requires a lot of rounded shoulders, which means strengthening your upper back is just as important. Breastfeeding, bathing, dressing and many other must-do’s put strain on your shoulders and upper back and could cause neck and shoulder stiffness and pain and even headaches. Pregnancy Fitness counters round shoulders with exercises that pull the shoulders back and strengthen the upper back.

Top Tips

- Pregnant women should preferably modify their core exercises from early on. Things like sit-ups and planks are not ideal for a growing belly. - To give the body the best chance to recover after birth, especially from Diastasis Recti (separation of the abdominal muscles to allow room for the baby to grow), it’s important not to stress the abdominal wall any further by doing exercises that cause pressure down the midline of the abdomen. - A strong core is important for pregnancy and postpartum, so special core work is essential to keep your core strong without stressing the abdominal midline. - Rather avoid high intensity or high impact exercises, contact sports, exercises with an increased risk of falling or exercises in a very hot environment.

NUDO HAIR LAB

Words Renate Engelbrecht Image Schwarzkopf Professional Essential Looks 2019-2020; Supplied

A new look for 2020 Celebrities and influencers flaunt their new looks all over NUDO’s and their own social media pages daily and we couldn’t resist to try it out ourselves. Simone Nortmann, Leandi du Randt, Craig du toit nel, Gareth Cliff, Jade Daniel, rugby players Andries Ferreira and RG Snyman and Uit die Bloute’s lead singer, Werner Kruger all get their hair done at NUDO Hair Lab and well, the Instagram feeds and comments all speak for themselves. So does the almost 11 000 followers on NUDO Hair Lab’s own Instagram page. NUDO Hair Lab, situated at the Glen Village South Shopping Centre in Pretoria East has set the bar high when it comes to specialised trends like hair extensions, hair colour, hair styling and gents’ cuts. We asked owners Pearl Daniels, Nastasha Watson, Jeanine Bezuidenhoudt and Debbie Serradinho to share with us what they believe the trends are for 2020. According to them, balayage or a more natural look is a very big trend that will definitely stick around in the new year. Platinum blonde is old news now and the

trends are leaning more towards champagne shades and warmer colours with clients wanting to have a more natural, healthy look. Money piece will also be a huge hit in 2020. This look is achieved by highlighting the frame of your face, giving you a sun-kissed look. Extensions are also very trendy for 2020 – not only for the length, but also for the volume that comes with it. Adding extensions for pops of colour is popular. This prevents having to colour your own hair, but still having room to be creative with colour while keeping your own hair healthy. Blunt, sleek cuts were in for 2019 and will continue to be popular in 2019. However, the new year will bring us back to the 80s with volume and oversized, powerful looks. Edgy, light fringes create a soft look that fits in well with the young and healthy glow most of us going for. With NUDO Hair Lab being a Schwarzkopf professional colour salon and stocking only Schwarzkopf colour, we just had to get some input from this global brand too. They’ve identified to defined trends for 2020: Colour

clash and Urbaganza. Schwarzkopf says colour shades are bold, but colour clashes are glamourous. They also say that going colour cool with the Urbaganza trend is the cool thing to do this year. This celebrates a unique sense of self and is a reinvention of an urban attitude with classic haircuts being fearlessly reimagined and unexpected combinations taking the lead. Think sharp lines and high shine for 2020. In addition to Schwarzkopf, NUDO Hair Lab also stocks brands like Joico, Wella, Nioxin, Mycro, Keratine, GHD, Minkin Lashes, Skinny Tan and Motherkind Collagen for retail. Start fresh with a new look for the new year. You can thank us later. SWARTSKAAP BISTRO Lamb pie, yellow-beaked ducks and ‘sebesebe’

We’re not sure what it was – the yellow-beaked ducks utterly enjoying the long-awaited drizzle of rain or the bunch of sheep camping out beside the road as we approached Sherewood Lodge – but arriving at Swartskaap Bistro was like arriving on the farm.

O Words: Renate Engelbrecht Images: Renate Engelbrecht

wned by husband and wife, Jacobus and Lisa, Sherewood Lodge is a little farm-style haven in the East from Pretoria that can (but should not) easily be missed. Taking a turn towards Tygerpoort Primary School, a whole new world opens up with large properties boasting cute-looking sheep grazing in camps beside the road, resident ducklings splashing in puddles in the dirt road leading to the lodge and prickly pears oddly thriving between properties and hidden pavements. A large, yellow sign guides you to Sherewood Lodge’s Swartskaap Bistro, an eatery boasting an intimate room with a warm atmosphere you won’t easily find elsewhere. True to bistro-style dining, the menu boasts hearty meals like their speciality lamb pie, bobotie and more, but on Thursday and Friday evenings they go all out with a blackboard menu that caters for the discerning foodie (like us). Then you can choose a starter, main and dessert from the blackboard menu (which obviously changes every week) and it is then that the chef in Lisa comes out to play. She is a qualified chef who now has the opportunity to live out her dream and her passion is not only visible on the restaurant side, but also in the finer details of the lodge and its rooms itself. Tried and Tested: We tried the lamb pie, which came with a huge, fresh salad and a delicious sauce and although we thought we won’t be able to finish it, we did without hesitation! The view from the bistro of course also added to the experience, with the lavish gardens of the lodge making it feel even more inviting.

It is at Sherewood Lodge, amidst beautiful gardens with secluded lounge areas that you can experience ‘sebesebe’ – a Sotho word describing the feelings of rest, peace and tranquillity. It’s the perfect place to get lost at in the middle of the city and even though it’s close to almost everything you might need in the city, it feels like you’re somewhere far out where the Piet-My-Vrou’s call is the only background music you hear. That and the laughter of guests dining at Swartskaap Bistro.

Top Tips

Swartskaap Bistro also caters for events like birthday celebrations, kitchen teas, farewell parties and more and boasts a lovely, outstretched lawn for kids to play on. With the events happening sporadically, it might be a good idea to make a booking to avoid disappointment. 100 Cole Road, Shere, Pretoria m 012 809 2398 k info@sherewoodlodge.co.za 1 www.sherewoodlodge.co.za E @sherewoodlodge4 Q @swartskaapbistrosherewood

a Vie Lente Bistro and Venue is located just outside of Pretoria and boasts the perfect venue for the slow way of life. That doesn’t mean things are slow in the kitchen, though. On the contrary, with a total of seven function venues (open from Wednesdays to Sundays) and a bistro (open on Saturdays and Sundays) Anthia’s got to know her game. She is one of those people who thrives on adrenaline and says Sundays are her favourite as that is when she gets [her] “ass kicked”. The kitchen is where she feels at home. She says she likes cooking for people; meeting them is not necessarily priority. Anthia has always looked up to Gordon Ramsay, but at the moment Luke Dale-Roberts inspires her menu planning and selections and he is an example to her as to how to lead her team. As part of her practical experience while studying at Prue Leith Chef ’s Academy, she worked at Pot Luck Club and observed how he worked with and treated his team. La Vie Lente’s menu changes every summer and winter, with this summer boasting lamb chops, a delicious T-bone, stuffed chicken, a familia platter for six, cheesecake, white chocolate brownies with homemade chocolate ice cream and more. Anthia says there is definitely something for everyone. She comes across as very confident in her cooking style and often leans toward Mediterranean cuisine with lots of herbs and spices.

RIVER MEADOW MANOR

Jan Smuts’ way of living

We just love to explore Pretoria and its surrounds – especially when it results in staying over at a romantic hide-away we didn’t even know existed!

24

Hello Pretoria • January 2020 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

We arrived late afternoon after a long week of hard work and couldn’t wait to just relax. Not knowing what to expect after driving down a small Irene road lined with lovely old trees, we arrived and parked underneath one of the largest mulberry trees we’ve ever seen. As we walked towards reception, we were in awe of the enormous oak trees that encircled the property and the size of the gardens that enveloped us right from the start. Reception was situated in a 1929 heritage building, which we later learned had initially belonged to Jan Smuts and his wife. Places with heritage like that always have a certain charm to them and this one was no different. After checking in, the gardens lured us to explore and we couldn’t resist the large swing hanging from a huge Eucalyptus tree. As we explored, we noticed one event venue after the other and realised that River Meadow Manor is not only the perfect weekend hideaway for families or loved ones, it’s also an exquisite entertainment venue, which is what it was intended to be from the start with Jan Smuts and his wife using it as their entertainment home. An old, carved out tree made for the perfect spot for pictures among the herb garden and water features added to the tranquillity of the gardens.

Manor still gives you a glimpse of what it must have been like to visit Jan Smuts at his entertainment home. Pure bliss.

Fun fact

- River Meadow Manor has recently been acquired by celebrated South African hotelier, Siyanda Dlamini. - There are great plans for River Meadow Manor, including more conferencing and wedding capabilities for the property, as well as possible spa facilities. - The gardens are perfect for an al fresco breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Even though it’s not necessarily promoted as a family retreat, it certainly caters for that too on most accounts. Even though the restaurant’s more romantic setting boasts cuisine that leans more towards fine dining than kiddies’ meals, they also don’t mind catering for 2-year-olds craving chicken nuggets. In fact, even that comes plated with its own special garnish.

The accommodation and venues are all named after well-known champagnes and we were booked into the Moët house, where we could lounge around in the comfy bedroom or sit outside, either on the lawn or at the table and chairs on the veranda. We certainly maximised our time there and did it all – from lazily lounging on the bed (largely because of its quality linen) to snacking on the lawn in front and having a late-night coffee on the veranda while enjoying the starry summer sky. Within two days’ time we were able to get as much rest as one would expect to get within a week. It was as if time stood still. Twilight and early mornings are the best at River Meadow Manor. Light slowly peeks through the 1000-year-old oak trees and Egyptian geese prod around the damp, glistening lawns. Parrots fly across, proudly flaunting their green feathers and when night falls, the Piet-My-Vrou starts calling its welcome-to-paradise call. It’s in these hours that you want to leisurely stroll around the gardens – glass of champagne in hand – and take in the beauty that not many people know exists in this area. At times we wondered what it would have been like to bump into Mr. Smuts in this lovely garden of his. Perhaps at the rose garden or under the lush Jasmin arch; perhaps in the foyer of the manor house or by the swing. Breakfast under the trees was the best! River Meadow Manor serves a beautiful buffet breakfast and if and when the weather permits (which is mostly the case in Pretoria) you just have to take advantage and indulge in your English breakfast under the trees while taking in as much of the greenery around you as possible. It might be more with the times now but experiencing River Meadow Hello Pretoria • January 2020 • www.hellopretoria.co.za

Make sure you try the Magalies Gin and Tonic which will only set you back about R25 for a single and R40 for a double. Spier This wine farm is one of South Africa’s oldest wine farms and they pride themselves in being good to the earth and being good to people. Their vines grow without artificial fertiliser or pesticides and they’ve replanted more than a million indigenous plants. The farm has been recognised by numerous external organisations for its sustainability and ethical business. 1 www.spier.co.za

Summit Grill and Sky Bar Summit Grill and Sky Bar is not only worth visiting for its unparalleled views of the city, but it also has a spectacular signature cocktail list. While some of their wines admittedly cost a pretty penny, you’ll be safe with their cocktails which range from about R55 to R85. We recommend The Summit Sky, which is made from Bacardi rum, Captain Morgan rum, Butlers Triple Sec, Butlers Blue and Schweppes Lemonade. However, if you prefer something a bit less extravagant, they also do all of the classics like Strawberry Daquiris, Pina Coladas, Margaritas and, of course, Mojitos.

Waterkloof Wine Farm Waterkloof believes that it’s important to cultivate on a farm that is truly alive and in tune with its natural environment – from the rocky soil in which the vines grow, all the way through to the surrounding eco-system. They have achieved Biodiversity Champion status in 2008 and have been farming biodynamically and organically completely since 2012. 1 www.waterkloofwines.co.za Babylonstoren As member of the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative, Babylonstoren has to adhere to certain conservation terms and conditions. The farm consists of ten hectares of critically endangered vegetation and every one of their 300 varieties of plants in their garden is grown organically where possible. These are but a few of their initiatives towards sustainability. 1 www.babylonstoren.co.za

MELROSE HOUSE Our very own Downton Abbey

T

he Melrose House, designed by British architect, W T Vale was owned by the Heys family from around 1887 until 1968 when the City Council of Pretoria purchased it to use it as a museum. In the late 1900s the area in and around Jacob Maré Street was a very sought-after residential area with numerous grand houses belonging to well-known families of the time. Melrose House was the only one of these residences to have been preserved in its entirety with its original contents. Entrance to the Melrose House is from the back at 280 Scheiding Street, with a large parking area next to a croquet lawn, a gazebo inspired by a plan drawn up by Paul Henwood, a sunken rose garden and a clay tennis court, bordered by a lover’s lane with wisteria growing over arches. Another archway is covered with vines. The house also has a formal Victorian garden in front (sadly not as well kept as it should be) with a large fountain (which was unfortunately out of order during the time of our visit) that adds some additional charm. George Heys, the owner of Melrose House seems to have had a special interest in gardens. He was in partnership with Edward Francis Bourke for several years and they were both instrumental in securing and laying out Burgers Park, which is just around the corner of Melrose House.

It might not have been designed by a South African architect and it might have been the home of the Heys family (originally from England), but it is one of the best examples of late Victorian architecture in South Africa.

Words Renate Engelbrecht Image Renate Engelbrecht,

Did you know? Burgers Park was originally intended to be a botanical garden but was eventually laid out as a park instead. George Heys was paid 775 Pounds for laying out the park. The interior of the Melrose House is typically Victorian with a billiard room, drawing room, conservatory and a huge dining room (where the Peace Treaty of Vereeniging was signed and where many special visitors like General Jan Smuts were entertained). There is even a separate staircase for the servants as they were not allowed to use the same staircase as the house’s residents. Even the attic has been wellpreserved. Walking through Melrose House gives you a great insight into what it had to be like living in that time. The house was also used as the British forces’ headquarters during the Anglo-Boer War from 1899 to 1902, with Lord Kitchener using the morning room as his office. 275 Jeff Masemola Street, Pretoria Central (Entrance at 280 Scheiding Street) m 012 322 0420 / 012 322 2805

Fun fact

- The museum is closed on Mondays and public holidays. - No photos are allowed inside, except for the dining room where the Peace Treaty was signed. - The entrance to the museum is from the back in Scheiding Street.

Culinary Table A hidden gem on the outskirts of Joburg

Who said a Joburg visit has to be limited to the inner city? Sometimes looking at things from another angle could be just what you need. When on the outskirts of Joburg looking in, the Culinary Table might just bring a whole new dimension to what you know as the City of Gold.

A

Words: Bianca Spinner Images: Supplied

t the heart of the Culinary Table restaurant is honest, authentic food. You simply won’t find fresher produce or greener greens because at this location they grow their very own fruit, vegetables and herbs inside the restaurant. Yup, as you enter this eclectic space you will find a glorious organic veggie garden and if you are quick enough to book, you can gleefully dine under their pawpaw trees. This hidden gem located in Lanseria delivers in joy and charm. The only regret you’ll have is that you didn’t visit sooner. It might be a bit of a drive, but it’s so worth it! We recommend popping past on a weekend for a lunch away from the city smoulder. Picture it … it’s a sunny morning in January, the birds are tweeting, and an array of freshly baked breads and handpicked veggies pass by in the waiter’s hands. Not to mention the coffee roaster, cheese deli, butcher and market that you also can’t miss out on. There’s a smell of freshness; an aura that demonstrates what the gastronomic world was intended to be... farmfresh, ethical, healthy and honourable.

We bet you’re wondering what’s for lunch. The Culinary Table’s menu changes weekly because it is dependent on what’s readily available for chef Daniela Gutstadt to use. Grab a table inside, out on the terrace or in the garden and then order an oat milk cappuccino before the feast commences. For starters, we had the bursting heirloom tomato salad shielded with olive oil and garlic. For mains, we tried the perfectly toasted organic buckwheat bowl as well as the chicken flattie with a side order of Parmesan fries and homegrown kale and spinach. You guessed it … everything was delicious and it’s safe to say that they’ve won us over! Seychelles Make 2020 the year to visit paradise Large granite rocks bordering the turquoise, tame waters of an archipelago consisting of 115 small islands lure us back to this piece of paradise time and time again. Having been there twice, we can honestly say that there is always a reason for visiting the Seychelles.

V

isiting paradise does not have to be restricted to special occasions like honeymoons or babymoons. The Seychelles itself is excuse enough to hop onto the plane. In fact, once you’ve seen what the Seychelles can offer, you’d want to bring the whole family. If that means that you have to start saving now, we couldn’t think of a better new year’s resolution than pulling out the Piggy Bank for a trip to Mahé, Praslin or La Digue.

HONEYMOON

The Seychelles has been a popular destination for honeymooners for a long time now and continues to be one of the top island holiday options. Because of that, you won’t struggle to find a hotel that caters for your special holiday requirements. From private dinners, brilliant spa options, exciting day trips and more, you’ll undoubtedly be in good hands and head back home with memories that will last a lifetime and an earnestness to return. Editor’s choice: Kempinski Seychelles Resort in Baie Lazare spoils their newly wed guests with bubbly, fruit and cake in the rooms, lazy days by the pool with some of the best cocktails we’ve ever had. They also offer on-site canoes and snorkelling gear that allow you to explore the exquisite marine life either from the surface or from underwater. FLIGHT TIME Johannesburg to Mahé: Just under five hours’ flight (Daily flights on Air Seychelles) Johannesburg to Praslin: An additional 30-minute island-hopper flight with a 19-seater DHC-6 Twin Otter 400-Series VISAS No visa required MEDICAL DOCUMENTS No medical inoculations needed LANGUAGE Seychellois Creole, English and French

If you’re looking for a luxurious island holiday, the Seychelles cannot disappoint. With hotel brands like Four Seasons, Constance, H Resort, Bayan Tree, Raffles, Maia Resort and North Island the possibilities are endless. Some of these hotels even boast their own private beaches, which means you get to have your own little piece of paradise for the duration of your stay. Editor’s choice: Definitely the treetop villas and the most beautiful private beach at the Four Seasons Seychelles Resort in Baie Lazare.

FAMILY

Most of the larger hotels in the Seychelles cater for kids with various activities that keep them busy for hours. Of course, having the beach and the lukewarm water on your doorstep at most hotels also helps.

travel

LUXURY STAYS

Editor’s choice: Constance Ephelia’s personal touches go a long way when it comes to entertaining the kids. Think arts and crafts with a local panache and a special imagination space with playhouses, kitchenettes and more.

SELF-CATERING

Even though there are numerous well-known hotel brands to choose from in the Seychelles, going the self-catering route is another fun way to explore the islands on your own. This allows you to immerse yourself in the Seychellois culture by visiting their local markets for fresh produce, buying fish from locals and cooking up a storm with your loved ones with some of Seychelles’ wonderful spices from the Le Jardin du Roi Spice Garden. Editor’s choice: The self-catering units at Eden Island (an island village developed by South Africans under the name Eden Island Development Company) are comfortable and spacious with lovely views of the marina and impressive yachts coming in and out. They even come with their own golf carts! The harbour town, La Digue is also filled with self-catering options and you can hire a bicycle just next to the harbour with which you can manoeuvre your way around the island.

ADVENTURE The Seychelles also caters to the adventurous at heart. Being as environmentally conscious as they are, these islands boast some of the most beautiful forests and extraordinary marine experiences like snorkelling, scuba diving and more. There are also a variety of hiking trails like Mount Copolia, the Anse Major Trail, Morne Blanc, Morne Seychellois, Vallee de Mai, Fond Ferdinand and more.

Words Renate Engelbrecht Images Supplied

Editor’s choice: The ultimate adventure when visiting the Seychelles has got to be Alphonse Island with Blue Safari. It is untouched, natural paradise where you can experience the best of the best when it comes to white, sandy beaches, stylish accommodation and luxurious adventures.

FUN FACTS

The Coco de Mer tree that grows in the Seychelles has the largest seeds of any plant in the world. The endangered Black Parrot is the Seychelles’ national bird and you’ll only find it in and around Praslin Island. Mahe Island is believed to house a hidden treasure buried by the infamous pirate, Olivier Le Vasseur in the 18th Century. If you’re interested, you can even go on a treasure hunt when visiting the island. Seychelles is one of the global leaders in forest conservation with 42% of the country’s territory that is dedicated to conservation. The Seychelles’ capital, Victoria is the smallest capital in the world and can be explored by foot in less than a day. Legend has it that if you eat Breadfruit while visiting the Seychelles you are bound to return one day. (Bring on the Breadfruit then!) Most of the 115 islands of the Seychelles are uninhabited. Retha Schutte, Pam Golding Properties Pretoria regional executive says that this comes as no surprise as many people with pets who live in apartments find it hard to have their pets fully integrated into the buildings due to confined spaces and complex rules. That’s why we think Roundabout Brooklyn is such a unique concept! It is “petfriendly apartments designed to create an environment where pets and owners can co-habit in a healthy and happy manner.” One-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, as well as a bespoke luxury penthouse apartment measure between 59m² and 187m² and are priced from R1.9 million up to R6.2 million. The development goes beyond allowing owners to keep pets. At Roundabout Brooklyn you will be able to fully enjoy you home without being disturbed by measures put in place to manage pets. In fact, there will be service providers like Little Companions (a specialist in pet grooming) and Pawsitive Pawsabilities (offering puppy socialisation, dog training and canine behaviour) that will ensure that owners – especially those who own pets for the first time – will have a full understanding of what it takes to look after pets and also get the right size and type of pet that will be suitable for apartment living. Susan Welgemoed from Little Companions says that offering mobile pet grooming and doggy hotel services is a growing trend globally and people want the best for their pets. That is why they will be offering grooming and doggy hotel services and Heather Whitfield, a specialist in animal behaviour and training will offer dog day care services

assisting with behaviour concerns that may arise from stresses for pets adapting to apartment living. The day care centre will provide a variety of activities for your pets, as well as all the necessary play and learning tools to help pets adapt to their new environment. Whitfield will even focus on physiotherapy for pets after surgery, trauma or injuries. She says: “Having this kind of set-up is as important for pets as for humans, as pets also need to socialise, engage and feel loved in a secure environment. Schutte says that with the growth of mobile grooming, pet hotels and specialised care and training services for pets, Roundabout Brooklyn is in a league of its own and we don’t think there’s reason to argue. Phase one of the development consists of twenty units so if you’re interested, you’d better hurry up! 7 LINDIE STRYDOM min with

She’s a beacon of hope in the city of Jacarandas with stars in her eyes and faith in the future. Lindie Strydom is someone you want to keep tabs on as she searches for and finds ways to make a difference in Pretoria and its community.

S

he’s been working at GrootFM since day one (1 July 2013) and has been the organiser of their community projects from the get-go. She was originally appointed as the brand manager, but she quickly made them understand that she has a different view on branding. Her expertise is everything but pull-up banners and business cards. She felt that it was important to use radio’s airwaves as a way to bring hands and feet to the community. GrootFM’s brand has literally been built through projects in Pretoria – reaching out to the community.

#JouMenseMyMense This project is a gesture of love and care with a focus on compassion. They are your stand-in family on grandma’s birthday when you would have liked to surprise her with a cupcake, but you can’t. It’s all about the small things that we can and should do for each other. #HOOPstootprojek This project helps to complete a need when the person in need has already done something from their side. If your daughter needs a wheelchair and you’ve already raised R3000 from a self-run project, Lindie and the team assists in finding a sponsor for the outstanding amount.

Lindie matriculated in 1996 and in January 1997 she started as an actress in Egoli. She played her role in South Africa’s very first soap opera brilliantly for twelve years. On a Friday at the end of January 2009 she closed that chapter and, on the Monday thereafter she walked in as Project Organiser at Solidariteit’s Helpende Hand. She worked there for almost five years before she joined the GrootFM team. She works on projects like #JouMenseMyMense (your people, my people) and the #HOOPstootprojek (hope push project) with a motto of #GROOTindieklein (big in the small).

For Lindie, it’s all about taking ownership and accepting responsibility in your community. Even to find solutions for problems that we did not necessarily cause. It’s a mindset through which she believes we can leave our city (and eventually our country) in a better state than what we found it in. To #Lositbeter (leave it better) is Lindie’s dream for Pretoria. She wants to do the small things with great love and faithfulness, which will build on one another and make things better than what it was.
