So what if the temperatures are plummeting? There are lots of incredible things to do in Joburg in winter – the City of Gold certainly doesn’t hibernate during the colder months. We’re here to help you resist the urge to hibernate by heating up your social life with a calendar filled with an array of activities. In our opinion, there’s no better place to beat the chill with a stiff drink in winter than a bona fide dive bar, so in the spotlight this month we have Smoking Kills Bar, Melville’s new unfussy hidey-hole, along with other worse-for-wear watering holes across the city. There’s one with character, one with history and even one with seven draught beers on tap for you to take your pick from. If you aren’t daring enough to check out one of Joburg's diviest dives, why not warm your cheeks with a cold-weather cocktail at a trendy cocktail or go on a sonic adventure at the jazz jewel that is The Marabi Club instead? For the foodies, we also have the scoop on hot new restaurants Urban Moyo and Doppio Zero Bryanston plus a whole spread on hard liquors (with equally temptingly tasty food pairings, of course) that are sure to raise your spirits this winter. Winter isn’t only about food and wine though – also check out our roundup of winter fragrances that are basically a hug in a bottle and our review of Crema, the perfect place to go for highly indulgent midwinter beauty spoils. Not forgetting the remembrance of Nelson Mandela this month, our Entertainment section is politically lit with picks that celebrate Madiba and the move to educate on civil rights locally and abroad. And did you know that it’s Plastic Free July too? Flip to People of Joburg to get to know the couple behind The Refillery, Joburg’s very first plastic-free grocer, who share tips on how you can join the plastic-free movement and the kitchen musthaves you need to get started. Whatever you get up to this July, remember that winter is time to slow things down a little, to get perspective and to linger a little longer on things. It’s a simply gorgeous time of the year here in Jozi. Here’s to basking in the winter sunshine, a little industrious indulgence and beauty in all its guises!

he colour of springtime is flowers. The colour of winter, on the other hand, is in our imagination. Winter is often met with frustrated sighs and complaints about the cold, but there are many reasons to love this season. The clean, vivid smell of cold in the air. The brightest moonlight you’ll ever see. Stars like golden dust. The smell of wood fires. Non-stop decadence and feasting. Mulled wine, sloe gin and spiced cider. Intimate conversations that never end on a beautiful evening. I could go on...

@chloenorgaard

Chloe Norgaard is an American and Danish model who’s known for her buzzed-about hair that’s taken taken hostage runways worldwide. She has a unique style and kinda looks like a walking Manic Panic ad, especially when her hair is a rainbow of fruity colours so multifarious it makes Katy Perry look lazy. But we absolutely love her fun pictures and tie-dye wardrobe.

Deacon possesses vocal abilities far beyond his years, with a unique timbre and unnatural pitch ability that allows him to switch between slick rap verses and honey-coated choruses. His new video from debut single, Not Givin’ Up, was shot late at night in and around Jozi and expertly captures the soul of James' hometown. With his stirring debut single and upcoming EP, James Deacon is poised for streaming and radio domination! E @jimideacon D @deacon_official Q @jamesdeaconofficial 08h00 I wake up and seek the closest form of a warm, caffeinated beverage possible, which is usually black coffee with two sugars. I then check my email for updates and any urgent messages from the label before showering and getting ready for the day. 10h00 Breakfast is bacon, scrambled eggs and toast just like mamma used to make it with a cup of Earl Grey Tea. I enjoy it on the patio in the sun. 11h00 I arrive at Bad Future Records in Greenside for a writing/recording or mixing session. This usually consists of a lot of joking around and getting creative – it’s awesome! 14h00 The studio team and I order something on UberEats for lunch and then have a strategy session about what we need to get done and any important meetings coming up. 17h00 I head to Hyde Park for an hour of five-a-side football with my mates. It’s usually a great time, but we’re in the worst division and only win about half the time, LOL! 19h00 It’s time for band rehearsal in North Riding. The boys and I set up before rocking out and blowing our eardrums. 22h00 We pack up and talk sh!t with the band. This can last anything from 30 minutes to an hour. 23h00 I’m finally home. FAMILIES WHO EAT TOGETHER Dinner table topics to keep things heated this winter

“I’m pregnant/married/getting divorced" Family dinner is always the wrong time to make a big announcement of any kind. The fastest way to ignite family tension is to let loose big news and have everyone try and digest it at the same time. Close siblings will want to know why you didn’t give them a heads up first or trust them enough to tell them. Your mother may cry, your father may shout. And, depending on the nature of the announcement, you could negatively impact the health of a grandparent. It’s just not worth it.

6

the chaos caused by the topic of plastic straws, though – this hot global topic can set off some dinner table fireworks. Consider the dynamics: your father thinks corporate South Africa should be dealing with a myriad of more important issues, your mother has boycotted the family’s favourite restaurant because it has no eco-friendly options, your sister wants to be an environmental scientist and your brother just moans about how the straws get soggy after a few sips. Recipe for disaster if you ask us! Rather: Drink wine or whiskey. It doesn’t require a straw. Dinner deflection So how’s the new job going? Even if you’re not in the mood to tell your folks that you hate it, now is not the time to highlight your sister’s decision to convert to an alternative religion, out your brother for quitting varsity to explore his interest with art or expose your mother’s online shopping addiction. The family fall out will take weeks, if not months, to repair. It sounds obvious, but tread lightly. People have feelings for days! Rather: Indulge your family. Answer their questions no matter how trivial or annoying they seem. This could be your time to shine.

Rather: Tell family members big news privately and separately. This will make the news easier to digest and make each family member feel considered and important. It will also lighten the load and line of questioning on your own plate.

Don’t go breaking mamma’s heart Lamb chops were your favourite as a kid, but now you’re a vegetarian and, well, your mother just can’t seem to accept that. Don’t wait until the meal she’s been prepping for you all day is laid out in front of you to remind mom of your dietary requirements.

Plastic straws Any family constitutes people of different generations, so their views of politics and climate change are naturally bound to differ. Be wary

Rather: Remind Mom (and Dad – in case you need backup) the day before that you don’t eat meat and that if it’s an inconvenience, you’re happy to bring an alternative.

Winter is a great time to prioritise eating together as a family if everyone’s been on their own mission for the first half of the year. It’s time for soups, stews and all the good things! But if you haven’t sat down as a gang together in a while, how about a quick temperature check on topic that could get things hotter than the meal if you’re not careful?

Why did you open The Refillery? After travelling the world by sea (we worked on yachts for six years), we got to see the world from the other side: beautiful but covered in rubbish. It was alarming. After we had our two kids, we decided to try Plastic Free July and stopped using straws, plastic bottles, Styrofoam cups, cling wrap and packets. We survived it, but thought there has to be an easier, more accessible way to shop without all the single-use plastic. Dom quit his job, we sold our house, moved countries and put our hearts and souls (and every last penny) into something we hope our kids will be proud of us for one day. Is this the start towards a plastic-free movement in Jozi? We believe so.The feedback since opening the store has been phenomenal. We’re currently looking at opening a store closer to central Joburg and then expanding to Pretoria, Cape Town and Natal. We’re a small company with big dreams! What are some of your best-selling products? Our customers absolutely love our range of Spaza dish and dry goods produce bags, which are perfect for your fruit and vegetable shop.To our surprise, our tooth powder is changing peoples’ mindset when it comes to dental health and plastic waste. What are your top tips for Plastic Free July? Become more aware of what plastic you’re consuming, be prepared to take reusable shopping bags with you when you go grocery shopping and start with what you can – every little bit counts, so keep chipping away at your plastic-free swaps! What are your plastic-free kitchen musthaves? I couldn’t rave enough about beeswax wraps! They’re reusable, washable and mould around whatever you need to cover – think sandwiches, snacks, mugs and more. Also, a tea strainer, which will last for as long as your love affair with loose leaf tea, and bowl covers that are both super-handy and a conversation starter at dinner parties. DRINKING AND DIVING JOZI

 LOVES

The one with provocative art Grime factor:  Value:  Atmosphere: 

Amid the swank food sanctums sprouting around Melville, Smoking Kills Bar is an unfussy hidey-hole firmly entrenched in part of the space that African tale-inspired cocktail bar, Mootee Bar, used to be in. It has all the hallmarks of any self-respecting dive: reasonably priced cocktails (all between R60 and R70) and craft rums, a retro TV playing grainy reruns of cartoons, soulful music, scuzzy bathrooms and smokers. Despite the name, you’re allowed to smoke indoors (there’s no outside seating anyway) and the neighbourhood crowd takes full advantage of this. There are also nicer touches, such as an artfully grungy wall marked with graffiti and anarchist tags. The owners – the same guys who launched Mootee – consider themselves some wanky Ernest Hemingway wannabes who live by the motto, ‘drinking rum before 10h00 makes you a pirate, not an alcoholic’, so you can expect a menu of seven cocktails all made with one common ingredient: Havana Club rum. Sidle up to the bar and let one of the well-seasoned mixologists serve you a Not a Piña Colada, made with rum, coconut water, salted pineapple syrup and absinth fizz, or a Chronicles of Banana Man – a creamy concoction of rum, banana, yoghurt, port and angostura bitters. There’s also a handful of easy eats perfect for drinking, including a Cuban sandwich layered with Swiss cheese, pulled pork and smoked ham, and warm churros with chocolate sauce. It’s dark, it’s boozy and it’s open till 02h00 every Wednesday to Sunday. What’s not to love?

The one with the history Grime factor:  Value:  Atmosphere:  The Radium Beerhall has been warming the hearts and tickling the livers of Orange Grove residents since 1929, even managing to survive South Africa’s political systems that were later abolished. Originally opened as a tearoom with a double life as a shebeen that sold liquor to black customers who were barred from drinking ‘white man’s booze’, it’s literally the mother of Joburg dive bars and is responsible for much of the nightlife we now take for granted. It’s as unapologetic as a disgruntled Kaizer Chiefs fan: the dim interior is crowded with pictures and memorabilia of the neighbourhood hangout’s long history, red-and-white tablecloths, a lot of wooden finishes and bargain buckets of beers. This boozer can compete with restaurants in the culinary stakes, offering Mozambican prawns steamed in beer, Portuguese sirloin pan-fried in wine and garlic and more. If you’re questioning its dive-bar status, locals say there are always one or two older guys sleeping at the bar. We’re convinced! 282 Louis Botha Avenue, Orange Grove m 011 728 3866 K www.theradium.co.za E @radiumbeerhall D @jazzedupradium

The one with character Grime factor:  Value:  Atmosphere:  News flash: The Jolly Roger of 26 years ago ain’t The Jolly Roger of today. Yet somehow this go-to for thrifty Parkhurst dwellers feels almost exactly like it did back then. Its shambolic fittings – dark-wood paneling, old pictures on the walls, blaring big-screen TVs, jukeboxes and slot machines – along with its mishmash of weathered regulars and new-to-the-neighbourhood kids creates a warm, come-one-come-all vibe. Order a bucket of four Castle Lights for R110 and a shot of tequila or Jägermeister for R22 each from the cramped bar, pop some punk on the jukebox and bask in the lack of obnoxious coeds – a rarity around these parts on Joburg. Its biggest draw, half-price pizzas on Wednesdays and Sundays after 17h00, is tough to top. There’s something innately satisfying about the well-made pizzas that are fresh out the oven – think the Basil Mania (salami, tomato, basil and avocado), Garage Days (mushrooms, avocado, banana and chilli) and Quatro Stagioni (ham, mushrooms, olives and artichokes).

The one with seven draught beers on tap Grime factor:  Value:  Atmosphere:  Glugging down pints of Guinness shouldn’t be reserved solely for St Patrick’s Day! Irish pubs are dime a dozen, but few possess a history as star-studded as the Irish Club. Opened 17 years ago by the Irish Ambassador to South Africa, the warm, Celtic ambience is a year-round affair, complete with a fail-proof combo of IPAs, bitters, tapas baskets and burgers. There’s a reason

this place feels so authentic – just about every square inch was schlepped from Ireland. The trimmings may skew sacred, but the older Linden locals are plenty rowdy. The club’s motto, ‘céad míle fáilte’, translates as ‘100,000 welcomes’ and hints that it gives customers a good time – and it indeed succeeds. It keeps regulars happy with its legendary burgers, which some swear are the best in the area, and the prices are reasonable across the board. Open from 14h00 to 23h00 most days, it provides many opportunities for the late night (or, uh, afternoon) rock star in you to make an off-key public appearance. AN UNDERWATER DISCOVERY AWAITS YOU

Explore, learn and wonder at life underwater at Cresta Shopping Centre Shoppers can imagine more this July, as Cresta Shopping Centre has revealed the new CrestAquarium – a modest exploration and showcase of life under the sea.

T

he oceanic experience introduces the beauty and magic of marine life to shoppers and the surrounding community and provides them with the unusual opportunity to see, learn and appreciate what we still have left to protect. Come noseto-nose with some of the ocean’s most iridescent little creatures, corals and underwater plants. Introducing over 30 species, shoppers will be able to enjoy the tranquillity of underwater moments – right here in the middle of bustling Joburg. The CrestAquarium was constructed to entertain and educate by showing those inland what we need to care for past our shoreline. The goal is to give the community the opportunity to form a connection with an otherwise distant world, so they learn how to help protect it. Cresta partnered with the best in the business in aquarium construction and expert marine consultants to ensure the project and construction was a detailed and flawless success as well as to ensure the safety and happiness of the ocean life introduced. The certified and regulated aquaria specialists ensure the selected ocean fish are cared for 24/7. Each fish was hand-selected according to compatibility, natural distribution and colour. Passionate about the power of the young imagination, Cresta reached out to high school kids with the challenge to design the new CrestAquarium Mascot – a mascot that will represent the education of underwater discoveries and the protection of our environment. The selected design will win R10,000 towards their education and R10 000 for their school. When you’re next visiting the centre, be sure to explore the CrestAquarium, situated on the Entertainment level.

e think it’s fair to lash out because Romy Spiro, female entrepreneur behind the Fabulash brand, has taken her passion to soaring heights. We recently visited Romy at her brand-new fabulous lash lounge in Illovo Square. From the minute you walk in, you’re captivated by the beautiful forest green banana leaf feature wall, pink neon sign that says ‘you can’t sit with us’ and trendy but oh-so-comfy aquamarine velvet couch. The lash lounge also boasts rose gold touches and orchids throughout. Of course, we got a full set of lash extensions done and fell in love with the voluminous lashes instantly! We also sat down with Romy for a quick chat.

Highly indulgent beauty spoils In this city of go-go-go, sometimes you need a little R&R – and that’s where Crema Nail & Beauty Lounge comes in. From facials and massages to manicures and pedicures, they’ll have you shined, glossed and prettified from tip to toe! You’ll never be more blissed than after one – or all – of these. Trust.

When did your Fabulash dream begin? It began eight years ago when I left the corporate world to build a brand that I believe in. I’m passionate about empowering women by giving them careers as well as empowering my clients by helping them feel good about themselves from the inside out.

P

roud owners’ Sandy Koukouves and Tiffany Bertossi’s delightfully trendy retreat is occupied by a thorough wash of dusty pink, floral designs and gold light fixtures. Those who frequent Crema are loath to go anywhere else – not only because of its lovely neighbourhood vibe, but because of the genuine skill and expertise of its staff.

Share your top tips for caring for lash extensions. Firstly, sleep carefully – don't sleep on your eyes or you’ll squash your lashes and cause your extensions to fall out prematurely. It’s also important to avoid anything with oil on the eye area and to go for regular lash fills (every two to three weeks).

CAMELOT SPA AT THE CAPITAL MOLOKO

W

e all know summer bodies are made in winter, so we kicked off the season with a knockout of a workout at Smiths Boxing Gym at Moove Motion Fitness Club in Sunninghill last month. Smiths Boxing is synonymous with boxing because of former three-time South African light heavyweight champion and World Boxing Association Kosie ‘KO’ Smith. The state-of-the-art gym within Moove is equipped with two sparring rings, over 20 boxing bags and a huge range of HIIT equipment to help you pack a punch. From beginners to trained athletes, their classes will have you punching your way to a fit, fierce, healthy life! Hello Joburg paid Smiths Boxing a visit last month for their Sweat Saturday event. There were two one-hour HIIT group fitness classes; one at 07h30 and another at 08h30. Being early risers, we opted for the early class. Upon stepping into the gym, you feel most welcome and really get the sense that there’s something for everyone, from boxing rings and CrossFit, to a mini soccer field. Plus, all the instructors are super-friendly. Although we were a little intimidated at first being beginners and all, as soon as DJ Mark Stent was on the decks and the class was in full swing, we were skipping, swinging and sweating like champions in the 12-round circuit-style boxing class. What we liked the most is that they really meant it when they said that no previous experience was required. Sean Smith and Shannon Strydom from Smiths Boxing tailored everyone’s workouts according to their fitness level. We never thought we’d say this, but we’re already excited for the next Sweat Saturday event. After all, good things come to those who sweat! 1 Kikuyu Road, Sunninghill m 010 595 2262 K moovemfc.co.za E @moovemotionfitnessclubsunninghill Q @moovemotionfitnessclub

t n a r u a t s e R THE MONTH OF

URBAN MOYO The revival of pan-African cuisine

You might not be all that enthused knowing that a brand-new Moyo has opened in 24 Central in Sandton. In that case, you’re forgiven because we weren’t either. However, after licking our plates clean, it was clear that this African-inspired restaurant is a stellar addition to Sandton’s dining out scene.

First off, we absolutely love the mural created by South African muralist, Justin from Nomad gallery, whose work can be found locally in Joburg and Cape Town. The captivating wall of art is a festivity of Jozi, with the Joburg skyline strikingly displayed along with Nelson Mandela Bridge and a map of Africa. It’s our favourite little nook in the restaurant – make sure you get an Insta snap right here or by the red neon Moyo sign! We also enjoyed the streak of Bonsai trees displayed across the bar area and the casual yet modernistic feel to the space – it’s a refreshing new take on an African restaurant.

ho says that locals can’t enjoy local cuisine? Gone are the days of Moyo being seen solely for tourists. We say halleluiah to the new spin off Moyo, Urban Moyo, which introduces a fresh new take on the Moyo brand. It’s contemporary, it appreciates and respects African flavours, and it devotedly Hello Joburg • July 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

An early signal that this place was serious about its food was when we spotted beetroot carpaccio on the menu, which was almost too spectacular to eat. This colourful plate of bold flavours excellently showcases the humble beetroot and comes served with a mint-feta cream and rocket hummus swimming in zesty orange vinaigrette. It was clear that vegetables would take centre stage, hence the main course, a roasted chermoula cauliflower steak. The unorthodox use of

muscadel-poached pears was sheer genius, as was the addition of an apple puree and lemon cream. Healthy, innovative, expertly cooked and downright delicious! Dipsomaniacs will be pleased to know there are nine cocktails on the menu, each named after a province. The cocktails are reason enough to visit this restaurant. Once they arrive, you’ll understand why. We recommend ordering the Northern Cape with Inverroche Gin, chai tea and berry juice, topped off with tonic. Licking your lips yet? Just wait until you see how it’s served! This goblet of wonder comes served on top of a bonsai tree and, no, can’t take it home with you – we already asked! The cocktail performance culminates in round two when you order the Mpumalanga served in an elegant elephant glass topped with El Jimador tequila, Aperol, peach tea and a whirl of naartjie juice. Top this all off with a traditional dessert that roars with African pride, a baked Malva pudding. Rich, spongey and syrupy, it’s a redolent seduction that’s worth waddling out of the restaurant for. 24 Central, corner of Gwen Lane & Fredman Drive, Sandton m 011 326 5523 K www.urbanmoyo.co.za E @urbanmoyo Q @urban_moyo

praises what’s African. This restaurant is all about the experience – after all, isn’t that what draws us back to a location? And the best news is there’s a non-douche crowd – not the usual pretentious, snooty folk one might find in the Sandton area, but rather the more authentic Joburger. Hooray!

HOTSPOTS:

CAFÉ DEL SOL BOTANICO

DOPPIO ZERO BRYANSTON

Brunch-style dining at its best oburg is full of things to do this chilly season, one of them being chowing through winter menus. Fortuitously, Doppio Zero has revamped their menu offering and opened a brand-new store inside Hobart Grove Centre where Junipers used to be. While we were adamant to try as many dishes as possible (for our readers, of course), it was an extremely tough feat! The new space is bright and illuminating, boasting a glorious summertime feel with forest-inspired wallpaper, plants hanging from the ceiling, a dark green confectionary space and a beautiful wooden coffee bar. Brunch-style dining is mandatory here – and highly Instagrammable too. For brunch, we recommend you do as we did and order a few bowls and tapas to share followed by a slice of caramel cheesecake and peanut butter tart. How does a Soul Bowl with Thai green coconut curry sauce and chicken breast tickle your taste buds? Also check out the Salmon Poké Bowl with chilli and ginger-cured salmon and the Babylon Bowl with crispy ‘pealafels’, a poached egg and hummus. Vegans will love that the menu has a dedicated vegan section (the chocolate cake is a non-negotiable order!), while gym bunnies will enjoy items from the Healthy section, such as the Harissa Tofu Scramble (don’t mock it until you’ve tried it) and Verde Toast with avo, spinach hummus, blistered cherry tomatoes and pine nuts. Carnivores can’t go wrong with the Spicy Livers – they're fiery pan-fried pockets of love. Prepare for your expectations to be exceeded – this simple yet stylish café that started in 2002 has taken its offering to the next level and gets a double thumbs up from us!

A little taste of home

T

here are few things more synonymous with a city than a great Italian restaurant. Here in Joburg, we’re fortunate enough to have a vast variety of options, but how many of these are actually quality? Without a doubt, Café del Sol is one of them – they don’t call themselves the best Italian restaurants in Jozi for nothing. Whether you have a hankering for a traditional spaghetti puttanesca or a fragrant porcini risotto, boy, do they deliver! The fact that the Café del Sol group is family-run is what we think has kept them thriving since 2007. Café del Sol specialises in homecooked Italian cuisine and the family absolutely love what they do – it’s evident in each and every dish. Good news for foodie fanatics is that only top-quality ingredients are used. True to their philosophy, only the best will do – their salads are made with beautiful organic greens and imported Parmigiano cheese, while the beef is all grassfed, the poultry is all organic and the fish is SASSI-certified. For this reason, prices are a little steep, but it’s worth every penny your belly will be ever so thankful too! The flavours are maximised in each dish – not to mention the gorgeous plating – so it’s difficult to choose a favourite. However, if it was a life or death situation, we’d recommend ordering the slurp-ready sweet potato and butternut soup with a touch of coconut cream for starters followed by a hearty bowl of homemade gnocchi (which is made daily, just by the way) ended that all off with a decadent slice of Nutella cheesecake. Because it’s winter, make the Boekenhoutskloof Chocolate Block your wine of choice – it’s a red blend that lingers elegantly for hours. m 011 463 0207 E www.cafedelsol.co.za Q @cafedelsolsa

FIVE-STAR NORTH INDIAN DINING Warm up with our must-try dishes at The Raj When you’re craving Indian food with a delicious mix of spices, mouth-watering flavours and intoxicating aromas – think a butter chicken and paneer tikka masala or a garlic and butter naan – make a beeline for The Raj Indian Restaurants, who’ve been serving North Indian cuisine in fivestar locations since 1996.

T

here are many reasons to visit one of The Raj Indian Restaurants to warm up this winter. No matter which restaurant you opt to go to, you’ll be taken on a journey where the fusion of skillfully spiced dishes with mesmerising flavours and textures plus rich colours will be an unforgettable experience. What’s more, all their chefs are from India, so you can look forward to an authentic taste of North Indian cuisine, and their herbs and vegetables are grown at their head office in Kyalami – because homegrown just tastes better, doesn’t it? Deciding what to order at The Raj can be a tough one because there are so many lip-licking options to choose from. Firm favourites that you can’t go wrong with are the tandoori dishes (especially the famous tandoori chicken, mildly spiced lamb sheekh kebabs and pepper-kissed lamb chops options), Lamb Rogan Josh, butter chicken, paneer tikka masala and, of course, the naan brushed with ghee (Indian butter) and topped with garlic. What a treat! If you’re feeling daring, try one of the chef ’s specialties. The prawns marinated in spices as well as the tandoori mushrooms (mushrooms stuffed with paneer and spices) are cooked in the clay tandoor oven and are beyond delicious. A spicier option is the prawn madras curry infused with mustard seeds, crushed chilli and deep-fried curry leaves, while the lamb shank soaked in a masala gravy literally falls of the bone. Vegetarians will enjoy the Baingan Masala brinjal curry – a curry made with brinjals slow-cooked in the tandoor oven to give them a smoky flavour that are then skinned, finely chopped and cooked with fresh garlic, ginger, tomatoes and spices. Whatever you do, make sure you order a stuffed naan bread on the side – choose from the likes of potatoes, mince, and paneer and cauliflower filling. K www.theraj.com

Apart from the top-notch food, you can also look forward to a space of pure luxury, friendly and efficient service and an ambience fit for royalty. The Raj has restaurants in the following locations: Nicolway: This restaurant is a hidden gem in the heart of Bryanston. Situated on the parking mezzanine level of the shopping centre, you can park your car right in front of the floor for easy access. As a plus, the balcony overlooks Main Road, so there’s an awesome vibe! Michelangelo Towers: If you really want to feel like royalty, the Sandton restaurant is the one to visit. It’s home to the famous Maharaja Room, fitted with crystal chandeliers, royal chairs and special cutlery to make your evening that much more memorable. Waterfall Corner: A cosy, upmarket space, the Midrand restaurant is one that families enjoy dining at, especially because children can watch the chefs prepare ‘the flying roti’, traditionally known as the roomali roti. They even get to stand with the chefs as they prepare this! Gold Reef City: Whether it’s for the slots or simply a good meal after going on some rides at the park, this restaurant is a fabulous spot for couples and families alike as you’ll get to enjoy the fun atmosphere of Gold Reef City. Time Square Casino: Between the hustle and bustle of Time Square’s slot machines and neon lights, entering this restaurant has a calming effect on all the senses. Plus, you’ll get to enjoy the view over Menlyn as you tuck into a curry! Sun City Resort: Tourists and families flock to Sun City for holidays, safaris and slots. Having this restaurant at one of South Africa’s most popular destinations is the cherry on top for any perfect vacation. Cape Town: The Raj also has restaurants in Cape Town, located at Old Constantia Village, Camps Bay Promenade and Harbour Bay Simon’s Town.

Try the new range of cook-in sauces The Raj has recently launched. In under 25 minutes, you can prepare your butter chicken, korma curry or Lamb Rogan Josh in the comfort and convenience of your own home! View the chefs’ videos by scanning the QR codes on the back of the packs.

chef OF THE MONTH

JAMES

KHOZA “If it doesn’t taste good, it doesn’t go on the menu,” once said celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal. These are the words that James Khoza, executive chef at Sandton Convention Centre and president of the South African Chefs Association, lives by.

Is it frowned upon for men to enjoy cooking in your culture? In the African culture, cooking is mostly associated with women – it’s considered unmanly if a man is seen in the kitchen. I grew up in Dobsonville, Soweto, so it was tough when I first took an interest in cooking, but I’ve grown into the profession and now stand to dispel this misplaced conception.

28

When did your culinary journey start? After studying Food & Beverage Management at Wits Technikon, my culinary journey really began at the Sandton Sun in 1995. I believe I’m now an old hand in this industry, but I learn every day.

How would you describe the newly launched menus? Fresh, soulful, health-conscious and customised for each client. I’ve made vegetables the star of the show on our current menus. I’ve made vegetables the star of the

MEET MARBLE’S NEW HEAD CHEF Tyler Clayton has been appointed as the new head chef at Marble. Formerly the sous chef at Saint, Tyler has moved across to take over the reins from Mike van Rooyen who’s left to pursue interests overseas.

When did you realise your passion for cooking? When I was a kid and used to cook for my brother and his friends. My career as a chef then started in 2015 when I started studying a Diploma in Culinary Arts.

Hello Joburg • July 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

What’s been your proudest professional achievement so far? Meeting and interacting with some highprofile people. I’ve also been very lucky to have moved up in the Marble group so quickly – each promotion has been a career highlight for me.

show on the new menus – each protein is paired with its own vegetable and starch, and we’ve traded in boring old buffet-style dining for singular dishes served on trays. Tell us about some of the well-loved icons you’ve cooked for. Because SCC hosts large-scale international events, the list is endless. Nelson Mandela, Barrack Obama, Cyril Ramaphosa, Bill Clinton, Thabo Mbeki and Jack Ma are just a few off the top of my head. Other career highlights include working with the late Dr Bill Gallagher and working at the InterContinental Berlin. How have your travels influenced your cooking? I’ve been to France, Germany, Greece, Malaysia, Singapore, Switzerland, Thailand and a few African countries. Experiencing these countries’ different cultures and respectful approach towards their own indigenous ingredients and food made me realise how much South African chefs have lost their identity. At SCC, we now try and include at least one local food item on each menu.

How do you spend your off days? Sleeping and recovering from the previous week. Being a chef is very demanding, but well worth it! I also enjoy playing golf and reading culinary books. Where do you hang out in Joburg? My favourite place to head to after a busy service is Sin+Tax, a bar just down the road from Marble in Rosebank. What’s your go-to weeknight dinner? Anything cooked by my mother!

Words Candice May Images Supplied

What’s the best part about working at SCC? It’s humbling seeing great multitudes of people who travel extensively enjoy the meals I prepare for them. My favourite cuisine to cook is local cuisine – there’s nothing better than oxtail that’s been braised, deboned, pressed, breaded and then fried, or whole tripe boiled and then fried in a breadcrumb.

Lerato's CORNER A candid review … ESPRESSO CAFFE & BISTRO

I

t doesn’t matter if you’re a local or an out-of-towner – you’ve at least heard of Espresso Caffe & Bistro (and if not, seriously – are you living under a rock?). One of the longer-standing and more consistent restaurants on Parkhurst’s 4th Avenue, people flock here to eat simple Italian food and drink copious amounts of wine on weekends. The question is why? Parkhurst Saturdays are a thing amongst my friends, and we usually end up squeezing into one of the last available tables at Espresso weekend after weekend. I get it: along with Rockets, Espresso is the vibiest place on the strip. But when it comes to other dining-out criteria – you know; food, drinks and service – Espresso leaves a lot to be desired these days. The first thing you’ll notice upon stepping into the busy restaurant is how loud it is (read: it isn’t the ideal place for an intimate gathering). The second thing you’ll notice is the dated black and white décor. Whether or not you pass the holes in the black tablecloths that are draped over the white ones as part of the décor is totally up to you. Moving on to the menu, you might want to bring along some hand sanitiser in case you’re handed one of the extra-grubby ones. On the upside, the food and drink offering is extensive – think ‘Landmarks’ like halloumi sticks and snails, ‘Trademarks’ like the chicken prego and peri-peri prawns as well as pasta, pizza, salads, desserts and breakfasts. The first problem I have with the food and drink at Espresso is how they serve my favourite Saturday sip, the Aperol Spritz, in Martini & Tonic glasses. I love this unmistakably orange drink because its vibrant colour lights up toasts, but how am I meant to take a cute Boomerang when it’s served in its competitor’s branded glass? Come on, guys – you know most of us are out here doing it for the ’gram! Then there’s the food. Oh, the food. While the prego rolls might sound appetising, they sometimes taste like the chef was applying salt with a snow blower that day. And, let’s be honest: a restaurant that trips over its signature dishes is as hard to trust as a person who misspells their own name! Most other things I’ve tried may as well have stayed in the kitchen, except the prawn pasta tossed in a peri-peri cream, which should’ve been sent back to Italy. I thought it tasted like chicken, but a more acute observer said the flavour was like pork sprinkled with fish food. You have to give credit where it’s due though: the pizza and wine is cheap and goes down well. Just make sure you bring enough cash to pay the bill as there are no card facilities available. The story goes something along the lines of the restaurant not being able to get credit when it first opened, even though that was 21 years ago and still, nothing’s changed (not even those damn tablecloths). You don’t want to risk having your card swallowed by the dodgy ATM inside! Other than all this, I can totally see why Espresso remains a Parkhurst hotspot of note.

THE HARD STUFF Raise your spirits this winter

Red wines are all very well and good in winter, but this year we’re giving artisan spirits a try. Forget cheese and wine and gin and tonic – our roundup of top liquors to drink this winter will get you through parties, outdoor excursions and quiet nights at home. It’s time to invest in a good thermos!

Vodka

Come winter, many drinkers switch to brown spirits. That’s a mistake though – vodka is a great liquor to drink in the colder months. Grab a 250g steak, sear it and serve it rare with ice-cold vodka for a meal that all your man friends will be proud of. What a fabulous surprise to know that a shot of vodka is also a perfect pairing with a hors d’oeuvre of thinly-sliced smoked salmon, sour cream and capers for that Christmas in July dinner party you’re hosting. If you’re not working on your summer body this winter, you can even nibble ricotta, goat cheese and Swiss cheese and take your shot for an afternoon snack. In your cart: Comedy legend Dan Aykroyd’s Crystal Head Vodka comes in an eye-catching skull-shaped bottle made by Bruni Glass in Italy. The kosher-certified vodka is made with highest quality peaches and cream corn that’s distilled four times into a neutral grain spirit and blended with pristine water from Newfoundland, Canada. The liquid is then filtered seven times, of which three are through layers of semi-precious crystals known as Herkimer diamonds. R725 from Normal Goodfellows

Cognac 

Cognac just feels right on a cold evening, don’t you think? Rich, spicy, woodsy, flowery and utterly luxuriant, there’s something ineffably wintry about it. Sipping cognac as a digestif with dessert is an indulgent way to keep a great meal going in winter. If a cheese board is more your kind of afterdinner treat, try a younger cognac with sweet, fruity flavours paired with creamy and soft blue cheeses. Surprisingly, when served chilled, cognac also cuts through the richness of salmon and crayfish and matches the zingy flavours of oysters. In your cart: Godet Antarctica Icy White is an amazing little cognac that’s aged for seven years in old oak before being naturally filtered, resulting in a pale hue. Distilled from the Folle Blanche grape, it’s floral with hints of caramel sweetness, chamomile, juniper and some dried apricot on the nose. On the palate, you’ll pick up good sweetness, dried fruits, a little chamomile again, sultanas and some orange blossom. Best served straight from the freezer! R579 from Yuppiechef

 While it’s usually associated with summery, tropical cocktails, rum’s molasses-like sweetness also makes a warming addition to the sort of drinks we turn to as the temperatures plummet. The trick is to swap out white and silver rums (the ones typically used in daiquiris and mojitos) for golden and dark rums when the weather chills. Golden rums pair well with deep-fried fish, jerk chicken and glazed barbecue ribs, while dark rums love burgers, steaks, brisket and dark chocolate brownies. If you’re one of those people who can’t resist ice cream in winter, try rum and raisin with an extra shot of rum. In your cart: Inverroche Cape Potstill Rum is easily one of the best local rums on the market. Crafted from African blackstrap treacle molasses and aged for seven years in first- and second-fill oak casks from Scotland, Portugal and Kentucky, this sipping rum has a deep, rich colour and a dry, smoky citrus and vanilla character with a delicious butterscotch finish. If you’re able to get your hands on a bottle, count yourself lucky – only three limited editions of 1,000 bottles each are released every year! R645 from Bottleshop.co.za

Save on your central heating bill and venture out this season The thrill of being a tourist in your own city

Winter is the best time to hop onto one of City Sightseeing’s open-top red buses. The buses are emptier, and the weather is delightful – neither too windy nor too warm. The Green Tour bus departs from Rosebank and takes you explore the leafy suburbs around Zoo Lake, stopping at attractions including the Johannesburg Zoo and Military Museum before reaching Constitution Hill. Here, you change to the Red City Tour and continue your journey into the inner city. Getting off at the Carlton Centre is an absolute must – make sure you take along some cash (it’s R30 per adult and free for children under eight) to enter the breath-taking Roof of Africa viewing deck on the 50th floor. The bus tickets cost R220 per adult (they’re often discounted online) and R120 per child.

There are many reasons to live in Joburg, but winter is maybe not one of them. We all stay inside watching Netflix on the couch, ordering Andiccio’s, and otherwise avoiding the best parts of the city because it’s just too cold. Still, Jozi in the winter is lovely in its own right. Put down the hot chocolate – hiding under a blanket isn’t an option this year! Keep calm and get to the chopper! Of course, vistas aren’t in short supply in this city. While you can always marvel at the cityscape from a rooftop bar, you’ll need to get a little bit higher for that picture-perfect wide-angle – and the coldest quarter of the year, when the days are clear and crisp, is the ideal time to do it. For the ultimate panoramic view of the City of Gold’s iconic skyline, you need to book yourself on one of Henley Air’s Joburg scenic tours. Based at Rand Airport, Henley Air is a specialist helicopter family-owned operation. Their scenic flips over Joburg – that happen at both sunrise and sunset – are totally bucket-list worthy. Strap on the blades and hit the slick stuff From lifting your glutes to toning your core, ice skating at Northgate Ice Rink is one of the best winter workouts. Whether you’re a total pro, a little bit wobbly or have to hold onto the rink for dear life, pull on those silver blades, take the hand of someone cute and glide gracefully around the blindingly white ice with the mall in the background. The prices are very reasonable (R80 entrance fee and R35 skate hire) and the environment is family-friendly. If you’re looking for a totally unique party or corporate event idea, look no further. The quoted price of R4500 includes venue hire, entrance fee and skate hire for up to 50 people, and a DJ and medic on duty for the duration of your ice time. Warm your cheeks with these cold-weather cocktails Over mulled wine? Winter in Joburg lasts a long time, so thank goodness for cosy fireplaces, high teas and plenty of innovative takes on classic cocktails designed to keep you toasty all winter long. The Culaccino from Saint made with Dona Papa Rum, spiced cacao syrup, Campari, Cointreau, grapefruit and orange foam is balanced, light and effervescent, but still has a rich spiciness to it. As a bonus, it’s served in the cutest mug with a toasted marshmallow skewer. It’s only available until the end of winter on the AW19 cocktail menu.

Montelobos is as balanced and approachable (for beginners) as it is many-layered and complex (for connoisseurs), capturing what renowned agavederived spirits expert, Iván Saldaña, calls the “mosaic of balance and complexity of the agave plant”. Mezcal is a category celebrated for its artisanal craft and authenticity and Montelobos brings together Oaxaca’s leading craftsman with Mexico’s foremost agave expert to set new standards resulting a perfectly-balanced, complex mezcal that allows all the notes of agave espadín to shine through characteristic mezcal smokiness.

Where tequila is light, sweet and delicate, mezcal is big, smoky-sweet, chewy and delicious – think cooked apples and pears, brown sugar and sweet potato overlaid with rich, meaty, smoky bacon flavours. Both mezcal and tequila are made using agave plants, but tequila is an un-smoky spirit very different from its ancient father, mezcal. Tequila is made only from the blue agave and produced in much larger volumes in mechanised autoclaves where the agave hearts are cooked using pressurised steam produced in petrol boilers. There’s no fire pit involved and the fibres from the steam-cooked agave are separated from the juices at the beginning, producing a very different flavour to mezcal.

arts&culture LAUGHING IS is lekker! Why South Africans need a good, hard lag! One wouldn’t be wrong to say that things are a little k*k in SA at the moment (let’s leave the crime stats for another time, shall we?). Now, more than ever, we could all do with a good, hard laugh – and often! If comedy isn’t a recurring item in your social calendar, here’s why you should make it one.

Words Carly Ritz Images Supplied.

Not only has laughter been proven to decrease stress hormones, but it also improves the function of blood vessels and increased blood flow to the heart, boosts your immune cells and burns calories (some, anyway).

The much-needed escape We live in hardcore times! From financial stress to crime and state capture, we’re inundated with bad news day in and day out. It’s easy to understand why people are slugging a Xanor with their Corn Flakes milk in the morning. Comedy is really a great way to escape that day to day reality. It gives you an opportunity to zone out – even if it’s only for 90 minutes. It’s an instant mood upper. Good laugh = happy heart Any medical text will tell you that laughter is a powerful antidote to stress and conflict.

Get out there and meet people Laughter is also arguably one of the best social lubricants when it comes to awkward situation and meeting new people. This is the perfect opportunity to grab a few mates and go see some comedy. Use the interval wisely. People are going to be a lot more relaxed and easygoing, which makes this game time to offer that cutie at the bar a coffee or a drink. Jozi comedy rocks! Mzansi is heaving with great comedy talent. From the old stalwarts that you know and love to up-and-coming acts, our local comedy scene is funny, real and borderline awkies at times. There are no holy cows. Whether you laugh as a coping mechanism or just enjoy the distraction, there’s no doubting comedy’s incredible power. Use it wisely, but often!

What’s on this month for one show only. With a track record of 30 years in comedy, Barry Hilton has raised the world’s laughter level considerably, so you can bet that this is a not-to-be-missed show! Parkers also has weekly shows showcasing local and international comedians. The fast-paced, multi-conventional play, CALL US CRAZY, is showing at Auto & General Theatre on the Square until 6 July 2019. The play gives humorous, flash-glimpses into South African life in the townships, rural and urban areas, unconvincing parliamentary debates, challenges in government and uniquely South African scenarios. If your stomach muscles are up to it, don’t miss this year’s Big 5 Comedy Show, happening at the Teatro at Montecasino on 26 and 27 July 2019. Soak up the laughs when Stuart Taylor, John Vlismas, Schalk Bezuidenhout, Tats Nkonzo and Kurt Schoonraad take to the stage. MARK BANKS ON ICE

’ve never walked out of a comedy show, but there’s a first time for everything. Most comedians have a strong repertoire of funny jokes and a few distasteful ones – some even laugh out loud and snort jokes if you’re lucky. Sometimes there are a few cr*ppy jokes, but if the rest of the set is strong enough, there’s usually plenty wiggle room to leave it behind. At times any comedian can lose a crowd for a few minutes here and there – it’s the nature of the craft. But not being able to hold the audience at all is a problem for me. I was excited to see Mark Banks on Ice at the Pieter Thorien. He’s still hailed as one of the industry stalwarts, so expectations were high. I

don’t know if it was a bad, mad or sad day, but I was horribly disappointed. Mark’s material was old, predictable and really not funny – even he himself admitted he was waffling 15 minutes into the show. Of course, comedy is about ripping into and interrogating current issues, but this particular set did neither. If anything, it was a barrage of insults about people in the service industry with no laughable insight. When Mark realised he was losing the

crowd, he tried to win them over with direct engagement by quizzing them on where they came from. Unfortunately, his reliance on the crowd to create the vibe bored everyone – fast. It might be funny the first time, but it can’t be the modus operandi every time a comedian feels like they’re losing the crowd. We don’t deny that Mark has had an illustrious career and is likely still very funny, but on this occasion we’re not sure if him coming out of hibernation was worthwhile for him or the audience!

he TGRC judging team were excited by the incredible talent seen throughout the competition. Now, the top six finalists have been chosen! The finalists stand a chance to have their art displayed on glass recycling banks in Joburg! In no specific order, they are: Dbongz, George Mars, Welby Mduduzi, Justin Catto, Jakes Mbele and The ‘Damn Vandal’. The campaign is to create awareness of glass recycling banks across the city and encourages citizens to actively recycle their glass bottles and jars at their local glass bank. By making some of

the glass banks more colourful with art, they will be more visible for people to find and fill! Three of the six finalists will be selected to each paint two glass banks in Joburg and showcase their art. TGRC believes in the infinite potential of glass to make a real and positive contribution to society. TGRC is committed to prove that glass recycling is worth the effort! For more information and to see the art come to life, head to TGRC’s social media channels or follow the hashtag #Art4Glass. E @theglassrecyclingco D @TGRC

POLITICALLY LIT!

We’re celebrating Madiba and the move to educate on civil rights locally and abroad While we use the month of July to celebrate the incredible legacy of Madiba, it’s important to remember that the struggle we all face still continues. There’s an incredible amount of hard-hitting, soul-searching and moving content currently available that will open your eyes, inspire you and motivate you to do your bit to fight the injustices we currently face. Box Office finds The Winter weather is here, and you’ll likely not want to creep out from under your blanket… and you won’t have to. DSTV Box Office has some movie rental options that will keep you hooked. Vice tells the story of American deputy president Dick Cheney. The movie is a biographical comedy drama that will leave you laughing one minute and horrified the next. Christian Bale in the lead is superb. Box Office also has On The Basis of Sex available, which tells the story of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and how she fought for women’s rights. Once you’re done with the movie, jump back to Netflix for the documentary, RBG, where more of Ruth’s inspiring life is shared.

Warm up

Now that you’ve warmed up your brain, warm up your heart and pop past this fun local business: Handmade Critters. Based on Instagram (@handmadecritters), you can find a collection of adorable designer Amigurumi toys. Each one is 100% handmade and they make for cute little gifts or keepsakes. Also, you’ll be supporting a South African small business’s growth!

Foeta Krige, one of the eight journalists, now shares his experience and how these eight different individuals stood together while also examining a curious death that occurred. Netflix has a new four-part series that will leave you feeling uneasy, but it’s the vital story of the Central Park Five – five adolescent boys found guilty and imprisoned for the attack and brutal rape of a jogger in Central Park, New York. Regardless of the lack of evidence against them, the boys were targeted and thrown in prison. Years later, a serial rapist admitted to the crime and DNA tests proved he was in fact the culprit. Sadly, because of the statute of limitations in the USA he wasn’t punished for the crime. The boys, now men, were released after spending more than 10 years in jail. The series showcases how the criminal justice system failed the five.

2018, in which I came third.

It’s no wonder that the international press have been quick to draw parallels between Simthandile and Tiger Woods, especially since US golf officials have nicknamed the young star SimTiger. At such a young age, he’s caught up in his sheer love for the game and refuses to give up his time on the greens even when it’s dark or he has other commitments. Simthandile receives full support from his family, with his father acting as his caddy. Of course, he also has the entire Steyn City team behind him. We caught up with the young sports star to find out a little more.

If you could have one wish, what would it be? To become a pro and to win The Masters Tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club. It would be a great feeling to wear the green jacket – this means that you’re an honourary member.

How did you discover your passion for golf ? My dad started teaching me golf when I was four years old – he bought me a set of golf clubs and took me with him each time he played. Tell us an interesting fact about yourself. I play soccer for Starlets academy and I’m the captain of my team. If you had R10,000, how would you spend it? I’d give half of it to homeless kids and use the other half to buy a new Callaway Epic driver or TaylorMade M6 driver and golf clothes.

What does it feel like to be the youngest member of Steyn City’s golf club? It feels good and it’s the best golf course that I’ve ever played. The people at Steyn City love me and I love them. Think like a backpacker You’re combining two trips into one, but you don’t get twice the luggage! You’re probably staying in comfortable hotels and travelling business class, but you need to pack smart. Pack versatile clothes that you can use for both business and casual, and be absolutely sure that you aren’t bringing too much. Work first, play later After all, business is the reason you’re on this trip in the first place. If you can schedule your meetings or conference at the beginning of your trip and add on extra days for 100% leisure time, Hello Joburg • July 2019 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

It doesn’t quite roll off the tongue, but ‘bleisure’ travel is arguably the coolest trend to happen in the history of business travel. However, in today’s always on, always connected workforce, the art of blending a business trip with leisure excursions isn't as easy as it sounds. Here’s how to really embrace everything that is bleisure travel. that’s brilliant. If not, make sure you balance your time well and are present in the whole process – this means being totally focused during your meetings and turning off your email notifications when you’re done for the day exploring. Travel outside the box Just because plenty of bleisure trips begin and end in the same city doesn’t mean yours has to. Not that enthused about your destination? Look at it as a launching point for the next leg of your trip. If you’re travelling to Europe, this is especially easy as different countries and cultures are always just a short train ride away. For example, if you’re flying to London, you can easily catch the Eurostar to nearby cities like Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels. When in Rome, do as the Romans do! Free time is usually limited on bleisure trips, so make the most of it! Explore local cafés in your neighbourhood instead of grabbing another Frappuccino at the familiar Starbucks. Visit museums and sights instead of watching the next Game of Thrones episode in your hotel room.

With bulky flight costs off your budget, you may even be able to treat yourself to a Michelin star restaurant, a full spa day with a personal masseuse or a tee-time at a PGA golf course. You only live once! Bleisure checklist:  Make sure your boss and teammates hear about it from your first. You don’t want your first Instagram selfie on the French Riviera to leave a bad taste in their mouth!  Make the most of your downtime and keep your leisuby doing some pretravel research  Build weekends and public holidays into your trip where possible so you can enjoy the city without having to take much paid leave.  Sign up for all the travel loyalty programmes you can. Frequent flyer and hotel points are a benefit of business travel, but you can use these rewards for your personal use.

Words Candice May Images Supplied

Why bleisure travel? When you’re younger, jet-setting for work can be exciting. But after years on the road, it becomes tiring and lonely. With the rise of bleisure travel – a buzzword for travellers, particularly millennials keen on achieving a work-life balance – you can turn what was once seen as a career inconvenience into a prime opportunity to expand horizons and experience new things. The leisure part of bleisure travel gives you the chance to relax and reboot, and is a very prudent way to maximise your holiday time and see the world.

RENOVATIONS Avoid renovation regret with these must-follow tips

Add another bathroom they said. It will increase the value of your property they said. A change is as good as a holiday blah-blah-blah, but what they don’t tell you is to vet the builders, never the full amount upfront and meticulously check the workmanship. After encountering some shocking recent renovation experiences, we share what you need to do before even changing a lightbulb. Better the builder your mother knows If you plan to open Google and browse “builders near me”, please think again! This isn’t one of those times when the Internet knows all (#trustus!). Hiring contractors and suppliers that have been vetted by people you know and trust is critical. You wouldn’t have your hair done by the stylist who botched your friend’s latest colour job, would you? Ask those nearest and dearest to you to share their suggestions and experiences and even walk you through the end result of their own home facelifts. After all, the proof is in the straight bulk head and even tiling. Price check everything Builders and suppliers make money by slapping anything from a

56

20% mark-up on all building material, so choose furniture and finishes wisely. Yes, you’ve wanted that Victorian bathtub with the ball and claw feet like your granny had for as long as you can remember. It’s gorgeous and screams bubble-bath soak – we get it. But your builder may forget to tell you that it’s also double the price of the oval freestanding tub that would look just as good in your new bathroom. If you still want it and the item is too pricey, consider shopping around before you sign the dot on your builders’ quote with the abovementioned mark up. It’s often less expensive to source the tub yourself. Don’t show them all the money The surest way to be ‘ghosted’ by your builders is to pay them in full. Of course, you may need to pay deposits along the way, but put some of your funds aside until the end. Don’t be afraid to tell your builders and contractors that this is what you’re doing either. If they know from the start that you’re a tough customer, they’ll be far more likely to get the job done right the first time around. Snag for days Once completed, inspect the work carefully and speak up sooner rather than later if you aren’t happy. After all, you have to live in this space. Skew wallpaper will drive you nuts while sitting on the porcelain throne or soaking in the bath (the one you choose wisely). And don’t let anyone tell you that once it’s stuck, it’s stuck. Wallpaper can easily be removed and reapplied at your suppliers cost too if they mess it up the first time. Make sure to give yourself some time to adjust to the renovations. You may not know that the shower is leaking in the first week so don’t be too hasty about settling your bill the day the job is finished.

JASON GREER

The Bachelor is all about finding love, so it’s no wonder that the host of the first local version is romantic at heart! We get the lowdown from TV presenter and actor Jason Greer on how much of The Bachelor SA was actually realistic, the most romantic thing he’s ever done and his proudest career achievements.

How were you selected to host The Bachelor SA? I was called up by the producers of the show, who asked me to come and do a screen test followed by another screen test and then an on-camera interview with Lee to see how we worked together. The rest is history! What was it like hosting the first local version? I’d watched The Bachelor before I was selected to host the first-ever South African season and my wife has always been a huge fan of the show, so it was a feather in her cap too (wink, wink!). My favourite moment was

on the one episode when everyone got to make their own cocktails – that was loads of fun! It was the same night when all the ladies received a rose, so there were no tears. One thing most people wouldn’t guess about the show is that all of it is realistic. What are your top tips for a happy relationship? Kisses, compromise and honesty! It’s so much easier being honest than trying to remember a lie anyway. Doing romantic things for your partner is also important. I’ve done too many romantic things for my wife to count, but the most romantic was when I proposed on Christmas morning in 2010. Are you a family man? Absolutely! I have two young children – a daughter and a son – who live with my wife and I in Lonehill. Juggling work and fatherhood can be tough, especially when I have to go away for work. Thankfully, I work from home though, so I get to spend a lot of time with my kids. There’s nothing more important to me! One of our favourite places in Jozi for a family meal is The Local Grill in Parktown North – their crusted rib eye with chips is insanely delicious.

What was your first TV presenter gig? I hosted a one-hour game show every week for about two months. I had to entice viewers to guess answers to sporting clues I gave to them. Baptism of fire, I tell you! Since then, I’ve hosted reality game show The Loot, entertainment magazine programme All Access, Tech Report on eNCA, spelling game show Spellbound and, most recently, The Bachelor SA on M-Net. I’ve been lucky enough to interview the cast of Sex and the City in London, Owen Wilson in Los Angeles and ventriloquist Jeff Dunham.
