ello Joburgers, remember the simple days back in primary school when Valentine’s Day meant giving everyone in your class heart-shaped lollipops? Your mom packed your lunch with chocolate and biscuits and counted all your valentines with your friends. Easy. Simple. Uncomplicated. Fast-forward to now and the February holiday consists of a weird minefield of awkwardness, relationship expectations and definitions … eek! Life is stressful enough, from work or studies to personal lives. Then Valentine’s Day comes and there’s the added pressure of figuring out how to show your love and affection for your someone. But don’t worry – that’s where we come in. When I started planning this February issue, I predicted we’d stick with traditional Valentine’s Day fare, but via a little bit of karma or coincidence, the features in this month’s magazine came together to offer a different take on the meaning of love. You can only imagine my delight! Whether you’re with your squeeze or adventuring solo, we’ve got you covered on the dining out front. Our Restaurant of the Month is finedining restaurant, Qunu at The Saxon Hotel, Villas & Spa, which is one of the most romantic spots in Joburg … but not in a cliché way. We’ve also reviewed some hidden gems that are sure to impress, from the glamorous AtholPlace Restaurant in Atholl, to the restaurant at the brand-new Giglio Boutique Hotel in Bedfordview. If you’re not a fan of Valentine’s Day, flip to our leisure activities section for what to do on Valentine’s Day if you’re single, or to our nightlife section for our top ideas to have an anti-Valentine’s Day celebration … no matter your age. Of course, we still have our regular features this month, so it isn’t all about Valentine’s Day. In our beauty and wellness section our beauty editor, Bianca has gathered the best beauty products that you actually need, while in arts & culture section we’re sharing public street art in Joburg that has to be seen to be believed. A personal favourite read of mine in this issue is our Backchat – this month we chat to the founders of Africology, one of my all-time favourite skincare and beauty brands. It doesn’t matter if you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day or not this month – let all that you do be done in love. Happy reading!

07h00 I’m an early bird because I like to get up and get my day going. During the off season, my weekend usually starts with a nice cuppa and breakfast at home with my wife and our two dogs. 08h30 I’ll hit the gym for a morning gym session. I usually train alone over the weekends. Pre-season it’s all about getting your body in the best physical condition to compete. If I don’t hit the gym, I’ll pop over to Zoo Lake for a run. 11h00 After a quick shower, I love heading down to Coriander Café at Green Valley Shopping Centre in Edenvale for a quick post-workout Smoothie. There’s something about their venue that automatically puts one in a better mood. I love their attention to detail and array of healthy snack options. 13h00 Rugby Players love to eat! And what better way to enjoy a hearty lunch than with your best friend who also happens to be your teammate, Shaun Reynolds? Our restaurant of choice would definitely be Café Plus, also at Green Valley Shopping Centre. I love their chicken mayo tramezzini! 15h00 You know the saying, “Magies vol, ogies toe”? After lunch I head down to AWHE Tattoo & Lifestyle Studio as I’m currently working on my tattoo sleeve. I sit back, relax and let them do the work.To me, tattoos really are an expression of art, and behind each tattoo lies a deeper meaning. 17h00 During the rugby season I don’t get much me-time, so when I find the time I'll quickly pop into Sandton City to do a bit of shopping. I'm currently obsessing over Worn Apparel’s latest summer range, anything BMW and my JBL Xtreme2 Speaker! 19h00 My evenings are usually spent at home with my wife and family. Our house is always buzzing with people and the braai is never out of use. Hello Joburg • February 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

THE

of East London dreamer Unakho Ntshintishi

U

nakho Asonge Ntshintshi, born on the 29th of November 2004, was born with complex cyanotic heart defects that are not correctable: Transposition of the great arteries TGA with DORV, both arteries coming from the right side of the heart, CoA – coarctation of the aorta, PS – pulmonary stenosis, large VSD – ventricular septal defect as well as hypertrophy of the right ventricle. Coarctation of the aorta was corrected and banding of the one artery was done six weeks post-delivery. In November 2005 Glenn Shunt was inserted. Doctors gave Unakho three years to live. To date she has had four open heart palliative surgeries to trim the muscle on the right ventricle, and both ventricles have hypertrophied. She is now 15 years old and has surpassed the doctors’ life expectation by 12 years. In 2015 Unakho received her dream to own her own bicycle; something that she never thought she would be able to own, let alone ever ride. Reach For A Dream made this dream day come true by inviting her and her friend to Beacon Bay to share a day filled with riding bikes, playing games and enjoying delicious pink cupcakes. It’s something that Unakho hasn’t forgotten to this day!

LALELA SCARF LAUNCHES LEATHER ACCESSORIES

Jenny worked as a flight attendant for 24 years before becoming the owner Glow Couture Fourways, a spray tanning studio that specialises in natural-looking spray tans that are chemical-free, paraben-free, cruelty-free and organic. We caught up with her to find out more about spray tan stigmas, her go-to beauty products and more.

International fashion brand, Lalela Scarf has now extended their existing product range to include gorgeous leather accessories that show off inspiring artwork created by at-risk youth who participate in NPO Lalela’s art education programmes. The new collection includes handbags and luggage tags that are both stylish and functional, being large enough to fit an iPad yet elegant enough to take to a dinner party. The bags are manufactured in Cape Town and the artwork is digitally printed directly onto the leather, allowing the grain to show through and giving the bags a beautiful and innate natural texture. 1 www.thelalelascarf.co.za

Shop P1/J3 Broadacres Lifestyle Centre, corner of Cedar & Valley Roads, Broadacres 1 073 335 0983 E @glowcouturefourways Q @glowcouturefourways Any advice for people who are sceptical about getting a spray tan? Spray tans have evolved so much that if they’re applied correctly by a professional, the chances of a disaster are zero. Of course, clients also need to follow pre and post tan instructions. What makes organic spray tans better? Organic spray tans look more natural and don’t cause any skin reactions. Plus, they won’t cause any unnecessary harm to the environment. Don’t rely on labels to see if a product is organic – rather look for tanning products that are free of ingredients like alcohol, artificial perfumes, parabens, mineral oil and artificial preservatives.

INTRODUCING LAMELLE’S CORRECTIVES BRIGHTER SERUM

Is there still a stigma around men getting spray tans? Not really; a lot more men are enjoying the benefits of spray tanning. However, men are a bit more nervous than ladies but once they see the results – and how quick the whole process is – they become regular clients. What’s your idea of a perfect date? My perfect date is a quiet evening with my boyfriend, indulging in sushi and sipping on champers, having long conversations and listening to chill-out music. I also enjoy dressing up a bit and going out though, as I live in sneakers and gym wear every day at the studio! What are your go-to beauty products for date night? Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation, MAC Strobe Cream and either MAC Ruby Woo lipstick or a sparkly nude lip gloss depending on my mood. Before I head out the door, I spritz my Chanel Gabrielle Eau de Parfum and apply some Moroccan Oil Treatment Oil to add some extra shine and a beautiful scent to my hair. Where are we likely to bump into you in Jozi? Some of my favourite hangouts are Milk & Honey Bar and Fireroom at Montecasino as well as Eighteen13 Boutique Wine Shop and Tiger’s Milk in Cedar Square. Hello Joburg • February 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

WHAT’S YOUR SECRET TALENT OR PARTY TRICK? An unforgettable lip sync performance. WHAT’S THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION ABOUT THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY? That it’s all glamour and no grit. There’s a lot of hard work that goes on behind the scenes – and it outweighs the glamorous moments that everyone gets to see. My advice to newcomers looking to break into the entertainment industry is to persevere … because success lies in not giving up! ARE YOU WORKING ON ANYTHING EXCITING THIS YEAR? Yes, I recently started working with The Singleton Single Malt Scotch Whisky, which is a perfect brand collaboration for me. As for the rest of the year, well, you’ll have to wait and see!

GIVE US A RUNDOWN OF YOUR CAREER JOURNEY UP UNTIL NOW. I started as a musician when I won the popular talent search competition called Famous! on SABC2. After winning the show we recorded a SAMA nominated album, and it was through this that I was spotted by SABC1’s kid’s series, YOTV. They were looking for a male host, so I auditioned and got the job, which I stayed in for five years. I then auditioned to be the host of SABC1’s breakfast show that explores Mzansi’s pop culture, Mzansi Insider. After waiting patiently, I found out that I got the show. Five years later with Mzansi Insider, I was part of The Search: E! Host South Africa, which I won in 2017. WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING AN E! HOST? Getting to meet the best stars in the world. I mean, I got to ambush Kim Kardashian at the end of 2019! My proudest moment so far was definitely having my own platform on the E! People’s Choice Awards in Los Angeles. If I had to describe my career in three words, they’d be ‘exciting, unpredictable and fun’. There’s no such thing as an average workday because no two days are ever the same.

TELL US ABOUT SOME OF THE INTERNATIONAL CELEBRITIES YOU’VE INTERVIEWED. The biggest celebrity I’ve ever interviewed is Victoria Beckham. She left me starstruck – she’s such a kind, warm person; far more than you’d expect. Other than that, my favourite celebrity interview was with Pink!, while my favourite red carpet personality was Canadian drag queen and ballet dancer, Brooke Lynn Hytes. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LOCAL CELEBRITY WHO YOU ENJOY WORKING WITH? That’s got to be Bonang – she’s one of the most professional people to work alongside. Also, Katlego Maboe, who’s a perfectionist at his craft. WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT TOOLS OF YOUR TRADE? Respect for the craft and confidence.

A facial with Pretty at this homely salon nestled in the heart of Parkhurst isn’t really about your face. You’ll leave with sated, soothed and glowing skin, but you’ll also head off with a new perspective on your skin health, and a list of products and tonics that could help it look even better. Once you have a cup of herbal tea in hand, Pretty starts off by asking you questions about your skin health and skincare routine. You might consider spilling all your secrets a totally irrelevant overshare, but this will feed into the bespoke facial Pretty gives you. My QMS Sensitive Skin Rebalance facial began with a double cleanse, an exfoliating enzyme and a cooling algae mask, during which Pretty magically kneaded the tension away with an intense head, neck and shoulder massage. A serum and dreamy facial massage followed before I headed out into the afternoon with a list of personalised recommendation in my iPhone notes, feeling replenished and reset. This is a 30-minute treatment, but the other facials on offer using QMS Medicosmetics and Dermalogica products are between one hour and 90 minutes. PS: Aura also does a 100% organic facial using luxury natural skincare brand, Skin Creamery products, which is fab for the first-time facial goer or a basic pamper. 65 6th Street, Parkhurst m 071 889 8572 K www.auraskincare.co.za k info@auraskincare.co.za E @auraskincareandnailbar Q @aura_skincare_clinic Hello Joburg • February 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

PIGALLE BEDFORDVIEW Top splurge-worthy seafood

O Words Candice May Images Supplied

ut-of-this-world seafood is hard to come by in Joburg, but when it’s done well, it’s probably the most delicious thing you can put in your mouth. We spread the net wide and ate absolutely everything in the City of Gold so we could find the very best, and finally found it at Pigalle in Village View Shopping Centre in Bedfordview – a high-class spot where classically opulent décor and personalised silver service meet.

24

With its exceptional seafood, meat and poultry dishes with a focus on Portuguese cuisine, good looks and city clientele, this is one big fish in the pond. You’ll be blown away: The sleek, airy dining room on the first floor delivers atmospheric views, while the à la carte menu offers pictureperfect plates with inspired flavour combinations. To kick off the evening, order a glass of bubbly and half a dozen oysters from the dazzling crustacea display. The hand-picked wild oysters are served in portions of six, nine or 12 and best enjoyed with a lime chilli dressing or diced red onion and red wine vinegar. Hello Joburg • February 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

For starters, try the Prawns Agulho – prawns sautéed in white wine and garlic and infused with peri-peri – it’s a fragrant triumph. Another great option is the glorious baby calamari tubes grilled in a light garlic and lemon butter … an instant classic! For mains, you simply must order the simple yet decadent Shellfish Platter: A heavenly spread laden with baby lobster, prawns and langoustines grilled in lemon butter and lightly brushed with a garlic marinade. Secure your bib and prepare to get your hands dirty because this is the best way to enjoy shellfish in the city! The spectacular platter is unfussy but spot-on – a celebration-worthy standout indeed. Pigalle also offers a mouth-watering selection of meat and poultry dishes – think an open-flame grilled balsamic fillet served with mustard mash, wilted baby spinach and caramelised onions; Portuguese steak pan-fried in white wine, ruby port and garlic then topped with a fried egg; roasted chicken supreme filled with apricot and wrapped in Parma ham then drizzled with a honey and mustard sauce; and slow-roasted confit duck leg prepared in a sweet Asian sauce

and accompanied by roast potatoes. You’ll find the perfect pairing for any dish on the wine list, which is the sommelier’s labour of love. At Pigalle, you’re expected to come when they’ll have you (you might only win a 20h00 Tuesday spot), wear the right clothes and pretend you aren’t eating in a shopping mall. The restaurant, in turn, is expected to deliver top-rated food that’s still breathtaking. And it does. We highly recommend the Bedfordview restaurant for special occasions and celebratory business dinners. To end our meal on a sweet note, we were tempted to order the dark chocolate torte with berry soup and berry ice cream as well as the orange cake with bitter orange ice cream and textures of orange to share but decided on the local cheese board instead. The luxurious platter that included lavash and preserves was a feast for the eye and delicious to share.

Charmaine RAMALOPE-MAKHUBELA Born and bred Joburger, Charmaine Ramalope-Makhubela AKA GlamFoodie has made a name for herself in South Africa’s culinary scene as a food blogger and influencer. In 2019 she also ventured into mainstream media and (despite not having any formal chef training) placed second on SABC3’s reality cooking programme,The Taste Master SA. We sat down with her to talk about her experience on the show.

Words Amber Richardson Images Supplied

TELL US ABOUT HOW YOU GOT INTO THE FOOD INDUSTRY. I loved cooking from a young age, but it was only much later that I decided to pursue cooking. I actually studied IT and worked in that field for a few years after graduating, but I hated it. I also studied fine art for two years and hated it. It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do with my life and when I thought about being in the food industry, I didn’t necessarily want to be a chef, so I asked myself: How do I express my love for cooking? And that’s how GlamFoodie came about.

OUT OF ALL THE DISHES YOU MADE ON THE SHOW, WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE? The pavlova. That was my winning dish and it was my first time making it as well. It didn’t go according to plan because the pavlova was stuck to the baking paper, but luckily the judges were judging by looks rather than taste and it looked amazing. I thought, “Thank god they didn’t have to taste that!” It was a beautiful dish and it did actually taste great minus the paper.

WHAT WAS YOUR HIGHLIGHT OF THE COMPETITION? My highlight was winning a trip to Belgium. I love TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE to travel so that was amazing. When I entered ON THE TASTE MASTER SA. the competition and they said two people would My husband was actually the one who encouraged get to go Belgium, I thought let’s get there. me to audition and I honestly didn’t think I’d make it as far as top two, especially because I was OTHER THAN COOKING, WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? competing against seasoned chefs. I love reading cookbooks and self-help books WHAT WAS THE MOST CHALLENGING like Malcom Gladwell. It’s interesting to know how to have an edge on your competitors, PART OF THE COMPETITION? especially for me as I felt like the underdog on My speciality is food styling, so my challenge was making the food taste good as well as look The Taste Master SA as I didn’t have any formal good. It was tough because there’s so much that training. So yeah, I love books that can help me get ahead in life. goes into creating a dish and balancing the flavours. I learnt a lot and made things I didn’t know I could – I’m not a dessert person and a lot of the desserts I made on the show were my first-time attempts.

ANY BIG PLANS FOR 2020? I would like to do more GlamFoodie Wine and Dine events where I organise a chef to cook a delicious meal and we do a wine pairing. I’m also

completing my nutrition course through Shore Academy. I want to be more of an advocate for healthy eating and create content for people who are health-conscious but first need to get proper accreditation for telling people how to eat. When I was 25 (I’m 35 now) I was almost twice the size I am, so it took a good 10 years to lose the weight and keep it off. I plan to keep it up and help others do the same. QUICK FIRE Favourite restaurant in Jozi? Clenergy. I love their food philosophy. Any food trends that you’d like to see disappear this year? Poké bowls and things like that – maybe it’s because I’m not a big sushi fan. Celery juice as well ... it tastes horrible! What’s your signature make-up look? False lashes. My husband gets so annoyed because I leave them lying around the house. What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about you? I’m an absolute geek. I love watching documentaries, especially about ancient aliens. Hello Joburg • February 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

LERATO'S CORNER A candid review …

THE ‘NEW’ DOPPIO ZERO SANDTON CITY

D

ining out on weekend mornings may be a Joburg institution, but too often the best brunch in the City of Gold gets messed up by substandard dishes, watered down cocktails and long lines (ugh!). But don’t despair, Joburgers: Doppio Zero in Sandton City recently reopened after a revamp with a new flagship interior design concept and it might just become your new favourite brunch spot. First, let’s talk about the space, which was completely overhauled. It’s airy and bright, with open glass areas, rich wallpaper designs, wooden furniture, ultra-modern countertops and flooring, and golden hued fittings. The upstairs area, which now opens up onto busy Rivonia Road, and the ‘lazy booths’ (how cool?!) are our favourite areas. We can totally see ourselves popping in upstairs for after-work drinks. Onto the menu, the restaurant now offers a section dedicated to vegans and allergen-sensitive or health-conscious diners. This is sweetened by a Belgian chocolate range of desserts and treats from the famed Coco-Me – think churros loaded with chocolate ganache, crêpes smeared with Nutella, dark chocolate brownies, double Belgian choc chip cookies and more. We love that there’s truly something for everyone. We visited in the late morning so decided to try a selection of tapas – the fish and pulled pork tacos, mushroom fritti, mozzarella croquettes, marinated burrata and wood-fired toasties. To wash it all down, we ordered a round of Gin Iced Tea cocktails (R78) made with Stretton’s Gin, citrus, mint and mango puree, Fitch & Leedes Lemonade and peach iced tea, which were refreshing and delicious. After biting into the tacos, we couldn’t believe that they go for just R26 a pop. My favourite was the fish taco, crammed with beer-battered hake, Asian slaw, salsa and mayo. The fish was excellent, the slaw zesty and the soft-shell taco perfect. My brunching partner said the pulled pork taco, complemented by an apricot glaze and apple salsa, was one of the best tacos they’ve ever had. The crumbed brown mushrooms with aioli (R45) and the ciabatta toasties with cheese, garlic and oregano (R34) were also delicious and great value for money. Unfortunately, the mozzarella croquettes with chilli herb mayo (R45) were rather plain and we found the burrata with blistered cherry tomatoes, balsamic reduction and crostini (R72) way too small a portion for the price tag. Overall, the food was tasty and I’d definitely return to try more of the tapas as well as the new healthy dishes and chocolate treats. What let us down was the service, which was painfully slow – if you’re planning to visit, I’d suggest going when you’re not in a rush and are happy to have a leisurely meal. Apart from that, big ups to Doppio for transforming this space into one of the trendiest new spots in town!

BISTRO DOLCE VITA

It’s one of Joburg’s most popular Italian restaurants and now the owners of Dolci Café have opened a second establishment – Bistro Dolce Vita – in the heart of Sandton. The new bistro is owned and run by chef Jackie Righi-Boyd and her husband Clayton Boyd as well as their partner Sergio Caon, who previously owned and ran Treviso Café in Craighall. Bistro Dolce Vita still has the Italian leaning that chef Jackie has become known for, but it is more cosmopolitan and also includes recipes from other parts of the world. Fresh Cuban vibes, a mix of pastel walls and steps leading down into the main room make The Royale reminiscent of paladares – casual restaurants run out of Cuban homes. Millennials are like fingerprints: They’re all unique. So, this was a hard choice, but we reckon a ‘not going out, going out’ event will do the trick. SUMMER NIGHTLIFE HOTSPOTS THE TINY TIKI BAR

Whether you’re looking to grab afterwork drinks with coworkers or a spot for an early-game Tinder date, The Tiny Tiki Bar knows how to make the warm weather remain a breeze. Adjoining sister venue The Anti-Social Social Club, here you can look forward to a colourful, laidback atmosphere and kitsch cocktails, such as The Zombie made with a famous blend of four different rums and the Bahama Mama; an exotic blend of coconut, Kahlua and Sailor Jerry Rum. The next morning, go back to cure your hangover with a pancake stack with housemade miso and maple bacon. 10 7th Street, Melville m 071 774 5242

THE HIDE OUT

The Hide Out is just the place to go if you’re staying at a backpacker in the inner-city. Not only because you should have plenty left to splurge on drinks seeing as you won’t be splashing out on a fancy pants bedroom, but also because you’ll meet fellow travellers and like-minded people over drinks like the Mojito Mint, Cranberry Daiquiri and Strawberry Bubblegum. Fun fat? The building the bar is inside used to be a secret printing press and hideout for anti-apartheid leaders, hence the name. Curiocity Backpackers, 302 Fox Street, Maboneng m 011 027 5257

THE IMMIGRANT BAR

Brought to you by the same guys behind 86 Public and Republic of 94 and closely linked to the Once in Joburg ‘flashpackers’ hostel, you can bet that The Immigrant Bar is where the party’s at. Find on a seat on the two-tiered terrace that overlooks Braam’s busy Grove Square and get happy drunk on signature citrus-based jam jar cocktails. On the cocktail menu you’ll also find the likes of a Cinnamon Pear Mojito, Raspberry Grapefruit Rosemary Martini and Pineapple Breeze. You might recognise Shakers Cocktail Bar from most of Joburg’s markets a couple years ago. Its permanent location that takes form of an open-air cocktail bar in Maboneng’s quirky Maverick Corner only has a few tables available, but you won’t mind that once the salsa dancing starts. The cocktail menu includes all the warm-weather classics as well as cocktails served in teapots, buckets and jam jars, all garnished with fresh fruit and berries. Plus, their new kitchen serves up finger-licking gastropub meals like burgers, ribs and halloumi sticks. 300 Commissioner Street, Maboneng m 011 015 7111 Hello Joburg • February 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

Where to find the best public art in Jozi

arts & culture

CULTURE trip Joburg’s inner city is known for a number of things – not all of them are good (we’ll admit it), but the City of Gold is home to some truly exceptional public art. This art is not only beautiful but also embedded with cultural history, making it a must-see for all. One thing’s for sure: Whoever said Jozi wasn’t beautiful clearly hasn’t seen these stunning pieces! Newtown Heads The Newtown Heads have been a distinctive part of the Newtown Cultural Precinct for over 15 years and are even more mesmerising since having had a facelift in 2018. The collection of over 500 wooden heads was refurbed by a team of artists led by Americo Guambe, who was one of the lead artists in their original creation in 2001. Made from disused railway sleepers, the heads are all unique and reflect the numerous countries and traditions from across the African continent.

Fire Walker

Words Amber Richardson Images Supplied

Made in a collaborative effort between celebrated artist William Kentridge and Gerhard Marx, Fire Walker is truly a sight to behold. The 10-metre sculpture was constructed as part of in the inner-city rejuvenation project ahead of the 2010 soccer world cup and depicts a woman with a fire brazier balanced on top of her head. Due to its large size, the sculpture was constructed in situ and pays homage to South Africa’s numerous female entrepreneurs who cook and sell mielies on the side of the road.

Una Salus Victis Nullam Sperare Salutem This magnificent wall mural done by internationally acclaimed artist, Faith47 is a popular spot for Instagram photos and it’s easy to see why. The painting, which spans the length of two walls on the corner of Fox and Rissik Streets, shows a herd of photo realistic zebras running. The action of the animals goes hand in hand with the energy and life of the city. The title for the artwork comes from an ancient poem by Virgil that translates to ‘the only hope for the doomed, is no hope at all’, embodying the theme of the work, which implies that you cannot escape your destiny.

Democracy is Dialogue Situated in Beyers Naude Square is artist Lawrence Lamaoana’s Democracy is Dialogue. This bronze statue was erected in the square in 2015 as a part of the Women’s Day proceedings and pays respect to the known and unknown heroines during South Africa’s many protests and pursuits of political liberation. The woman holds a placard that reads, “Democracy is dialogue” (hence the name of the work) and a Molotov cocktail in her other hand, which is a play on the Goddess of Democracy who typically holds a torch. She’s placed on three steel pillars, making her visible from the street as well as the square.

Eland Clive van der Berg’s enormous concrete and metal Eland sculpture has become a significant part of Braamfontein, acting as a gateway of sorts between the suburb and the city. The size of the Eland gives it a grand look although there’s also something slightly forlorn about it. The grooves on the beast are filled with indigenous shrubbery, which further symbolise the country’s stunning plant life and natural heritage while also representing the growth of the city. A literary LOVE AFFAIR Romantic reads for all

If all you want this V-Day is to curl up on the sofa with a cuppa and good book, you’re in luck! We have the ultimate book recommendations for all types of romantics ... plus some great movie suggestions if reading isn’t your thing.

For the thrill-seeker If the rain scene from The Notebook is your idea of perfection, then make sure you get your hands on Love and Other Words by Christina Lauren. This novel follows the life of Macy, a paediatrics resident whose world is turned upside down when she runs into Elliott, her first love. The story is told through a series of flashbacks and beautifully depicts the excitement and longing of young love. It’s an especially good read if you’re a sucker for happily ever after – the cheesier the better, right?

If you prefer your romance novels peppered with mystery and action, Innocence by Dean Koontz is the book for you. The novel centres around the life of Addison, a young man whose appearance seems to distress people to a point of violence and so is forced to hide himself away from society. Addison’s existence is one of isolation until he meets Gwyneth who, like him, isolates herself due to her social phobia. This novel is heart wrenching, unpredictable and extremely refreshing. In true Dean Koontz style, it has a healthy dose of the supernatural and a gruelling reflection on human nature. With its likeable characters, exciting plotline and completely original ending, we guarantee you that you won’t be able to put this one down.

For the romance hater

Keen on a little longing and a lot of angst? Call Me by Your Name by André Aciman (recently made into a critically acclaimed film starring Timothée Chalamet) is a mustread for those with a penchant for forbidden love. The story is told through protagonist, Elio’s perspective as he recounts being 17 and falling for an older man called Oliver. Although Oliver first feigned indifference towards Elio, their romance soon turned into a six-week-long love affair, which marked them both for the rest of their lives. This novel is heartbreakingly honest and casts a beautiful reflection on the passage of time. It’s so worth the read – just make sure you have a box of tissues close by!

If the thought of epic first kisses and airport scenes make you cringe, be sure to pick up A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. This book is arguably Hosseini’s best work so far and that’s saying a lot given that he penned The Kite Runner. A Thousand Splendid Suns is poignant and deeply sad but also truly moving. Although the novel does have an underlying love story, we could argue that the main love affair is between main characters Mariam and Laila, who were both forced to marry the same man as teenagers and form a mother and daughter like bond. Set in Afghanistan, the story focuses on how Mariam and Laila help each other survive and the unlikely but unbreakable friendship that grows between them.

The ultimate CAPE TOWN

Advertorial

Fall head over heels with the Mother City in 2020 It’s time to fall in love. It’s the month of romance after all. And what better way to honour those you hold dearest than with a mini vacay in the most beautiful city in the world and Africa’s number-one tourist destination? Forgive us Jozi, but Cape Town’s majestic mountainscapes and azure waters that make up the Atlantic Ocean are both inexplicable and incomparable!

T

he obvious truth is you never regret a trip to the Cape – it’s one of our all-time favourite destinations. But because we’re so spoilt for choice, we’ve brought you our top three personal favourite hotels … and a few extras.

SLEEP AND EAT A stopover to sweep you off your feet: The Marly Boutique Hotel & Spa – Camps Bay This location deserves five stars and it simply does not get better – the view couldn’t be more perfect, and you’ll never have to look at the same view twice. Just when we thought the hotel couldn’t be improved, the newly renovated hotel now boasts 40 sophisticated designer rooms and suites with endless mountain and sea views.

46

from your room, is where you can have dinner. Choose from shucked oysters to sesame seared ahi tuna to pan roasted mussels or delve deep into their double smash burger or hot pastrami dog. Otherwise, skip the mains and order their Campfire and Marshmallow dessert: Chocolate, oat cookie crumble, praline ice cream and marshmallows. Breakfast is served at Bilboa Restaurant (also downstairs) and there is a gorgeous selection of fresh pastries, granola, seasonal fruits, toasts, omelettes and scrambles. But we recommend opting for the Jerusalem bagel with cream cheese smoked salmon and adding an easygoing boiled egg. Oh, and their coconut yoghurt served with homemade carb-clever granola is reason enough to visit this hotel!

We were so happy to discover this masterpiece of a hotel because you become immersed in Cape Town’s beauty the minute you arrive. The property just ticks all the right boxes – think a rooftop bar with the towering mountain as a backdrop; a silky turquoise pool overlooking Camps Bay Beach; and royal, spacious and comfortable rooms. It’s intimate and boutique in nature but still of the highest quality and access to the finest dining options.

After your taste buds are gratified, why not visit the gleaming Marly Spa? It’s a confection of Carrara marble pared down modernist fittings and a menu of top-to-toe face and body treatments from some of the world’s leading spa brands. Thanks to its all-white interiors, slick manicure bar, pedicure stations and four tranquil treatment rooms (where guests can even customise their lighting and music preferences), The Marly Spa is a cocoon of luxury and exclusive comfort. Unique to the Marly Spa are their 30-minute Ling Express Facials. Developed by facialist to supermodels and the stars and owner of Ling New York, Ling Chan, these targeted face treatments provide a guaranteed instant result ... in just 30 minutes.

With an icy G&T in hand as the rose-orange sunset sets, you’ll soon find yourself mesmerised by the surrounding beauty. Here, you won’t need a few days to settle into your holiday – it’s instant. Plus, there’s something about a boutique hotel that makes you feel like you’re at home, which we always appreciate. Surfshack, located just downstairs

travel A sanctuary for the soul: Camps Bay Retreat Hotel – Camps Bay It is all sorts of incredible to stand at the forefront of this property, which is tucked away inside a private nature reserve. You feel like you’re walking directly into the spellbinding ocean. This piece of land is what millionaires dream of owning and what us locals dream of visiting. It’s so unique and rare to find such a spacious hotel in the middle of a forest-like landscape overlooking the ocean right in the heart of Camps Bay. Myriads of soaring plants create a thicket but if you look past the bridge walkway, you’ll see the peaks of the villas, where you’ll have access to your own pool, lounge and balcony. If you’re a naturalist, then there is no better destination in the Cape. The tweeting of birds or the multifold of crashing waves breaks down the peace of the retreat.

Whatever accommodation style you choose, the experience is evenly matched. There is an option of staying inside the manor house or foregoing this and choosing a more secluded villa style on the opposite side of the bridge or option of staying inside the deck house. You’ll dine Tuscan style under spectacular vines with a warm cuppa in hand and marvel at the views of Mother Nature. The food is delicious, from panko chicken strips to Thai green curry to decadent seafood pasta or a simple club stacker. Whatever you order, you can expect hearty, delectable lick-your-plate dishes. Ethos

Best for: Friday lunch when you’re not going back to work Private room: Fully private dining room If your group cares more about the food than most, Ethos has got to be the pick. Operating out of a bright space with high ceilings, this magnificent new restaurant and bar is a pleasure in every way. The Tatsakis family AKA the Hellenic heroes at this stylish gaff are in the business of interpreting Mediterranean classics to an impressive effect. The flavours may be reassuringly authentic, but the presentation is progressive – note the coal grilled octopus dressed in olive oil and lemon, burrata cheese filled with a roasted rosemary and garlic dressing, crab moussaka layered with crab and tomato ragu as well as the whole line fish rubbed with herbs and olive oil and filled with layers of tomato, olive and red onion. Local wines rule when it comes to the wine list and corkage can be pre-arranged. Aurum Restaurant

Best for: Going all out in decadent surrounds Private room: Choice of a fully private boardroom, semi-private chef ’s table and wine library

Epicure Restaurant Best for: Classy carnivores Private room: 40-seater private dining room

Looking to make a big impression? Aurum will do the trick. Fine dining technique paired with intricate dishes can tend to feel stuffy, but at wellknown chef and culinary consultant Paulo Santo’s stellar all-day spot that’s just opened on the seventh floor of The Leonardo, the kitchen’s classic training somehow feels fresh. The luxurious restaurant turns out some of the best contemporary European dishes in Jozi, including cured springbok, slow-braised pork belly and Norwegian salmon. During the day the restaurant offers a ‘Light’ menu for lunch, and in the evenings a ‘Dark’ menu for dinner. Aurum also shines with an exquisite wine list. This is just the place to go if you’re looking to take your group on a nostalgic culinary journey that fuses old-world service with new-world cuisine.

Want to dig into sambusas, doro wat, complex stews and more sublime African food? Grab the escalator inside the super-smart apartment building that shoots you straight up and spits you out into this slick and sprawling restaurant. Chef-owner Coco Reinarhz uses slow methods of cooking mingled with flavours of West African spices to make classic yet innovative dishes – think signature entrées such as beef fillet on the bone, Yassa baby deboned chicken, Vadouvan spiced sea bass and West African style goat. And what’s more, when the sky-high spice levels start to kick in, you'll be able to hide the tears in your eyes. Whether it’s a leisurely lunch, a quick catchup or a matter best settled over a few beverages, Epicure is ideal for discrete business discussions.

KEEP YOUR KITCHEN

SPARKLING Reviewed: Earthsap’s eco-friendly cleaning essentials

We’re becoming more and more environmentally conscious (rightly so), so it seems appropriate that we start thinking of ways to bring natural, organic cleaning into our favourite place in the home: The kitchen. We tried and tested some of Earthsap’s eco-friendly cleaning essentials made with naturally derived, safe, nontoxic and biodegradable ingredients – here’s what we thought. KITCHEN CLEANER Tackle grimy surfaces throughout your kitchen with this kitchen cleaner formulated to dissolve grease and grime on all kitchen surfaces, naturally and safely. This cleaner combines naturally derived ingredients for a natural way to get rid of kitchen messes. It’s great on all surfaces, including cooker tops, work surfaces, sinks and tiles. Plus, it has a spray nozzle that makes for faster and easier cleaning … and we love the scents! R63 from Wellness Warehouse or online at www.faithful-to-nature.co.za

DISHWASHING LIQUID Naturally powered by plant extracts, this dishwashing liquid’s formula is highly concentrated and requires just a few drops for a full sink of dirty dishes. Not only does it last a long time and get your dishes sparkling clean, it also has gentle aloe extracts to help keep your hands smooth and protected and the refreshing scent helps make the dishwashing experience a success. It’s also available in apple and pear scent as well as a tea tree and orange scented antibacterial and antifungal variant. R50 from Wellness Warehouse or online at www.faithful-to-nature.co.za

CREAM SCRUB ALL-PURPOSE CLEANER This deliciously fruity apple and pear all-purpose cleaner is like your more traditional Handy Andy that works without leaving a thick residue to rinse away. It degreases and removes obstinate stains without scratching as well as removes mould and mildew. We love that this product lets you care for the environment while you clean everything from sinks and tubs, to pots pans, to counters and stovetops. It’s a fab first step in trying to remove toxins from cleaning products!

ELIANA & VASSILLI

from Africology What inspired the passion for sustainable beauty? It began with the awareness of what chemical ingredients can do and their impact on the body and environment. Africology is deeply committed to empowering consumers and helping them make conscious choices, while honouring the universe, nature and its intelligence. Based on years of research, we have gained an in-depth knowledge about the chemicals used in cosmetics and the effect they have on the human body. Thus, Africology’s authenticity is expressed within our manufacturing ethos. What are some of the challenges that come with sustainable beauty brands? To actively project an overall consciousness within the beauty industry is tough. For instance, it’s been a struggle over the years to actually educate and guide suppliers as well as consumers into understanding the importance of a more sustainable and greener outlook in cosmetics. Surprisingly, there are a lot of people who are unaware, and it’s our mission to empower consumers and help them make conscious choices. What are your most popular products? That’s a tough one as we have quite popular list, but to narrow it down to a few: The Skin Conditioning Marula Oil, Body Butter, Oud Diffuser, Vitamin Skin Boosting Serum and Absolute Rose Serum. Are there any exciting launches planned for 2020? Absolutely! We have a new fragrance, candle and diffuser planned to launch in the upcoming months. Our latest product release is our Magnesium, Charcoal and Shimmer Bath Bombs, which we are very excited about.

Tell us about the inception of the brand. The brand has humble beginnings in our family kitchen where our mother and the brand’s CEO, Renchia Droganis would make homemade products for her reiki treatments. She would mix her own bespoke skincare products using essential oils, which proved to be very beneficial to her clients and soon enough the word spread to a spa. We were very involved in the development of the brand doing things like giving up bedrooms to ensure that there was enough space for stock boxes, cutting labels by hand, mixing and filling bottles and, of course, our lunchboxes would always smell of essential oils! It wasn’t just Renchia’s passion anymore – it became ours too.

What makes Africology unique? We are committed to blending pure, natural ingredients with love and divine intention as well as to harm no one by being conscious of our planet and all who inhabit it. Our formulations are enhanced with nutrients, vitamins and minerals that are bio-identical to your biology. Africology is cruelty free and does not test on any animals whatsoever. Hello Joburg • February 2020 • www.hellojoburg.co.za

Any favourite products for the summer? Definitely our SPF 30 – a mineral-based sunscreen that’s recommended for sensitive skin. It’s lightweight and chemical-free and is formulated with active ingredients that nurture and nourish the skin. The beauty of a mineral-based sunscreen is that the minerals simply sit on top of the skin’s surface, effectively reflecting harmful UV rays away. It’s non-irritating and naturally fragranced with calming herbal active ingredients. More benefits of our SPF are that it’s vegan-friendly and is backed by dermatological testing. CELEBRATE THE MONTH OF LOVE!

Plus, when you purchase this treatment, you’ll get a complimentary Devotion Body Oil as a gift. The Africology Heart Chakra Candle is another romantic spoil that you can’t go wrong with.

Eliana Droganis-Haniff and her brother, Vassilli Droganis are both directors at one of South Africa’s leading natural beauty and skincare brands, Africology. The brand was started by their mother, Renchia Droganis in early 2000 and now distributes to over 350 five-star spas countrywide. We sat down with this sibling duo to find out more.

What are some must-try Africology treatments? Our Oxygen Facial Therapy and Shamans Healing Journey, as all beauty starts from within. Our ethically sourced combination of homeopathy and plant essences are blended with the science of biotechnology to bring visible change and every ingredient used in our treatments has been chosen carefully with your safety and health placed above all else.
