Hello

ONLINE

www.hellopretoria.co.za

It’s officially the festive season! December in Gauteng generally means school holidays, leave periods commencing after a long work year and a mass exodus of residents heading towards the coast. It also means planning for Christmas day, gift shopping and preparing to play Santa for the younger family members. With so much to contemplate, our gift to you this festive period is a little research to help you plan in advance and make it a Christmas to remember:

CHRISTMAS EVE TRADITIONS For some families, Christmas celebrations take place on Christmas Eve, whilst for others, the 25th of December is the day for the festivities. Regardless of which day you choose to celebrate, we generally all have a few family traditions. So, if you’re looking for new traditions to start with your family or are just curious to see what traditions others uphold then join us as we take a look at some traditional, some novel and some bizarre Christmas eve traditions..

STOCKING FILLERS

ALTERNATIVE ADVENT CALENDARS

These days, Christmas presents

While we’re all accustomed to the traditional Advent calendars where tiny numbered ‘doors’ open to reveal a chocolate per day for each day of December to help children countdown to Christmas, with the rise of concerns about sugar intake, obesity and a general desire for something more novel, we take a look at alternative advent calendar ideas.

generally come with a hefty price tag (thanks VAT increase!) so choosing gifts for Santa to deliver can become time-consuming - and ironically it’s the smaller gifts for ‘stocking fillers’ that are often the hardest to decide on. We’ve done some homework for you to help you be the best ‘Santa’s Helper’ you can possibly be.

The Nutters Brittle

With 40 years’ experience in food manufacturing and management, Mark Lipman has once again worked his magic and created a unique brittle unlike any other on the market. Mark’s handcrafted caramel brittle is thin and crispy, coated in Belgian chocolate with a heavy sprinkling of nuts. He has reinvented the old traditional style of brittle and created an unapologetically bonkers brittle that people go nuts for. Mark has launched with three flavours, almond nut with dark chocolate, cashew nut with milk chocolate and hazelnut with white chocolate all of which are Halaal Certified. Although the Nutters Brittle is made with butter, brown sugar, imported chocolate and nuts, it is extremely well priced in stores making it an ideal gift. Mark’s secret magic makes this a delightful and delicious cheat treat for any occasion. If you haven’t tried The Nutters Brittle, you don’t know what you’re missing! The Nutters Brittle retails between R30 - R35 so there’s no excuse not too! 1 www.thenutters.co.za

Taking the pain & strain out of being a landlord

The upside of owning rental properties is the income stream but there are plenty of downsides – finding suitable tenants, late payments, defaults, managing deposits and legalities are just a few. In an effort to help landlords find tenants faster and through a more rigorous vetting process, Gumtree has collaborated with HouseME, a disruptive property technology company that has begun reshaping the South African property rental marketplace. HouseME uses smart technology to connect and vet tenants, collect rent and manage the complete viewing, vetting, administration and payment process. The collaboration with Gumtree, the country’s biggest online classifieds website, will offer what Claire Cobbledick, Gumtree SA GM Director, describes as an example of business symmetry; “We have 47,000 SA rental properties listed on our site and those landlords can now easily access the security and peace of mind that comes from this kind of expert third party management.” 1 www.house.me

Cassie Maree

He’s been living in Pretoria since 2012 and says Pretoria is a city with a small-town feeling. Cassie Maree, general manager of operations at a civil railway company, is a man for open spaces, good wine, cigars and new experiences. He says the open air, nature and numerous outdoor activities makes Mooikloof Ridge a great place to live in. For him, Pretoria is a special city, as you are always about a 5-minute drive away from an open space, whether it is a cycle route, a dam, a golf course or a weekend market. He likes to keep his mornings open for cycling, hiking or just walking around somewhere. In addition to that, he enjoys filling his days with friends, a braai and “a good red wine for balance.” His favourite places to shop for meat are Woolworths and Pick ’n Pay. “If I have to convince my wife to braai, it’s Kassler chops from Woolies and if I have time, it’s chicken from Pick ’n Pay. The motivation behind the decision is how much effort and time it takes.” 1 ww.woolworths.co.za 1 www.pnp.co.za He has been a fan of cigars since varsity, with informal wine tastings that evolved into wine and cigar tastings. “Like with any wine tasting, you have to be fancy and seeing that the wines we tasted could not really be classified as fancy, something else had to make up for it.” He suggests JJ Cale, which will probably have something for everyone situated in Menlyn, Woodlands or Time Square. 1 www.jjcale.co.za He says Pretoria is a brilliant place to be in at the end of the year. “There is really so much to see and do in Pretoria that you normally don’t get to do. Our previous holiday in Pretoria revolved around new restaurants, museums, art exhibitions and nature reserves.” According to him, it is quite easy to fill a week with at least one exciting adventure per day. And, for the best New Year’s Eve sundowner spot, he suggests a koppie just outside of Swavel Poort with some of the best views of the area. Hello Pretoria • December 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

Throw the best New Year’s Eve party… AT HOME!

24

Throwing the best party doesn’t have to be difficult. These days you can hire almost anything – from chefs to mobile bars. Chef Knows Best’s slogan says it as it is: Don’t cook, just book. They provide a variety of menus, from a braai menu to pass around cocktails. They even offer waiter services, which means all you have to worry about is entertaining your guests. With experience in 5-star hotels and even the Rovos Rail, Patron Chef Wayne Burgin definitely knows best when it comes to catering for special events. 1 www.chefknowsbest.co.za Hello Pretoria • December 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

There are also numerous mobile bars to choose from that cater to the Gauteng area and surrounds. Liquid Chefs Mobile is a mobile bar that will be able to take care of your every need when it comes to alcoholic (and non-alcoholic) beverages. 1 www.liquidchefsmobile.co.za You might not be drinking and driving, but your guests will. Uber operates all around Pretoria and is literally just a click away. Or, if you’re keen on spoiling your guests and splurging a little, why not consider hiring a limo? Execuride should do this service justice. 1 www.execuride.co.za If you’re more of a do-it-yourself kind of party planner, there are numerous recipes and routes to follow to ensure the perfect New Year’s Eve bash. The simpler, the more elegant I always say. A few candles scattered around the house will do the trick. If you’re keen on hosting a party, but your budget is

tight, consider hosting it later in the evening when everyone has completed their dinner plans. That way you don’t have to worry about preparing dinner – canapes and drinks will do. In South Africa, we are used to the bring and braai concept. There is also nothing wrong with inviting your guests to BYOB (bring your own booze). If you are not comfortable asking your guests to bring their own drinks, keep it simple by providing only the basics - beers and wines. Last, but not least, a barking dog can easily be a party pooper. We all know the impact that firecrackers have on pets during the festive season. Helping your pets cope with fireworks could make it easier on you and your guests. Let them get a lot of exercise earlier that day and keep them inside. Some human companionship always helps too.

That’s it, folks! Have a jolly New Year’s Eve.

Words: Renate Engelbrecht Images: Supplied

P

retoria’s weather allows for some of the best al fresco events one could wish for. What better way to enter the new year than with a dash of fairy lights brightening up the garden, some trendy G&Ts, a couple of canapes and a South African braai or a specially prepared dinner for friends and family?

The merriness of the festive season always goes hand in hand with a couple of drinks, resulting in an increase of drunk driving and evidently more accidents and fatalities. Why go down that route if you can have the best New Year’s Eve party in the comfort of your own home?

reating something stylish that will withstand the test of time is often not so easy. This time of the year normally goes hand in hand with kitsch Christmas items like red and green socks, too many, brightly coloured fairy lights and Santa-themed decorations which will be chucked into a box when all the festivities have passed, only to be taken out again next year.

Even though Pretoria can attest to having shops and markets that stock these kitsch items (like any other city), the city of jacarandas can also stand proud with a number of sophisticated artists, buyers and stockists who make sure that all is well with the world when it comes to non-kitsch Christmas decorations and crafts that will make the festive season a stylish one.

Kulukind and IK Ben De Klei is the brainchild of a Pretoria-based artist, Karien Louw Abreu. Her artwork (including lovely décor items, perfect for an originally decorated Christmas table) shines with South African uniqueness. She makes some of the most beautiful stoneware pottery trivets and irreplaceable oil lamps that will complete the atmosphere with brilliant light. Kulukind, a pop-up brand, also stocks creative and unique baby clothes and leather handbags. If you like dressing your little one for the festive season, keep an eye out for stunning, stylish reindeerthemed outfits that won’t let your baby look like one of Santa’s elves. These items are only available while stock lasts. “When the stock is finished, I move on to a new project,” says Karien. E @Kulukind E @EKDIEKLEI If you are looking for an original centrepiece for your Christmas table, a very special gift or even something that can serve as a different kind of Christmas tree, Ãrium is the answer. This creative team makes some of the loveliest terrariums – from small to large, in unique vintage glass holders and black and copper Wardian cases. Ãrium is based

in Pretoria and mainly sells these specially captured and nurtured gardens at local markets. They will be selling their terrariums with numerous types of plants at the Irene Village Christmas Market on 1, 8, 16 and 17 December and their stock include terrariums, orchids, air-plants and grow-a-tree-kits. These are all local, custom and wonderfully made. E @AriumZA For some authentic art pieces, why not have a look at Vos & Ink’s watercolour paintings? Although Alisa Gunter’s current range is focused on the holidays, you can request custom-made paintings for your Christmas table. These would be ideal for creative placemats, which you can later frame for a special spot in your house. You’ll often find her at markets where she does live portraits too. 1 www.vosenink.co.za

VERSATILE VENUES

A look at some of Pretoria’s best conference and wedding venues

Words Shevaun McCreddy Images Supplied

Many venues within Pretoria are equipped to be versatile in terms of the events they can accommodate and offer conference and wedding packages that are competitive and fairly inclusive. We took a look at some of the most picturesque wedding venues in Pretoria that make for equally attractive and functional conference venues.

Diep in die Berg Diep in Die Berg sounds like a mountain retreat which might require a 4x4 for access but is in fact far on the contrary. This Tuscan styled venue in Wapadrand Pretoria is an all-purpose venue which is able to cater for weddings, functions, celebrations as well as conferences and corporate events. There are seven conference rooms and a boardroom, which can also be used as a holding room for esteemed guests. The main conference venue can host 450 delegates cinema style, whilst the other six smaller venues can be used as breakaway venues or booked for smaller conferences. Apart from the conference venues, Diep in die Berg also has a restaurant and bar on site which serve as beautiful lunch or post-event cocktails venue. The restaurant’s industrial feel is clean and inviting with exposed piping and filament globes for an old-school-cool feel.

Chez Charlene This prestigious five-star venue in Pretoria East is well-renowned for both its wedding and conference hosting abilities. Their main banquet hall can host between 40 and 350 guests (layout dependent), whilst the boutique venue can accommodate two to 60 guests for a smaller more intimate affair. Guests are able to sit with the venues in-house chef and customise menus to suit their requirements. Chez Charlene can accommodate 14 guests in their suites, which may not be ideal for large conferences, but they are also in close proximity to a number of guest houses should you wish for guests to stay over. They have ample parking for delegates and their packages include a number of extras such as a sound engineer on site, specially packed lunches and conference stationery for delegates.

Monte De Dios Monte de Dios in Zwavelpoort is an exquisite Spanish Equestrian Villa with an impressive mountainous backdrop. It can cater for small intimate events with as few as 20 guests to large corporate conferences of up to 400 delegates. There are only 6 suites on-site however so it is preferable for a full day conference where overnight accommodation isn’t required. The conference packages can be tailored to suit your specific requirements and they also offer AV and technical support along with the latest conference equipment through their preferred supplier, so you can rest assured they know the venue’s requirements and acoustics well. If load shedding strikes, Monte de Dios is equipped with a backup generator and has a high-speed wireless internet connection – essentials for a successful conference.

THE JEC

South Africa’s most versatile venue

The Johannesburg Expo Centre pulled no punches in 2018 with yet another calendar of successful events. If 2018 was anything to go by, there is a lot to look forward to in 2019.

“I

t has been an exceptionally busy year for us and a great year for the industry too” says JEC CEO Craig Newman. “To have a calendar that is packed with events throughout the year speaks volumes to the extensive experience and capacity of the South African meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions industry (MICE)” There were many highlights from the last year, The Rand Show and Electra Mining to name just two. This year’s Rand Show numbers spoke for themselves. With approximately R50 million injected into the Gauteng economy, over 900 parttime personnel hired and more than 200 000 people who attended the show, the positive impact to the country is evident. And those are just some of the statistics off the back of only one of the many events hosted at our venue each year. These are the golden nuggets that make the work we do so satisfying. We’re changing lives, one event at a time.” A quick snapshot of the Electra Mining Africa 2018 Exhibition is further testament to an excellent year. The event, held every two years at The Johannesburg Expo Centre tells the story of an industry aggressively on the march taking major

30

technological strides with no intention to slow down. There were thousands of visitors who attended this year’s show over the five days to see the latest innovations across mining, industrial, electrical, power, transport and related industries. With over 20 000 parking bays and over 150 000 m² of space, the JEC’s indoor and outdoor multi-purpose facilities were more than equipped to handle the volume of people attending the show and facilitate the large scale, often customized exhibitor stands. Gary Corin Managing Director at Specialised Exhibitions (Pty) Ltd could not have been happier with the 46th installment of the Electra Mining Africa event at The Expo Centre. “The show was an overwhelming success. This is the perfect home for the show. No other venue allows for our needs like Expo Centre. The venue is in pristine condition, allows for the heavy machinery on display, has ample parking for our visitors and exhibitors’ staff. Exhibition Halls are functional, spacious and conducive for doing business. Then there is the outside areas – these help create a carnival atmosphere. Outdoor exhibits, eating areas and

exhibits on the Lake contributed towards creating an event that is like no other on the African continent. We highly recommend the venue as a place where people can meet! So what can you look forward to in 2019? The JEC has yet another impressive lineup of events planned. One of the most renowned Electronic Dance Music (EDM) Festivals in the world, Ultra SA returns in March 2019. Next year will mark the Ultra SA Music Festival’s sixth anniversary in South Africa bringing with it the world’s top EDM DJ’s with unparalleled stage designs and top-tier productions to more than 40 000 South African EDM fans. Next year’s Rand Show in April 2019 is particularly significant as it marks the 125th installment of the family event. Without giving away all the secrets, event goers can expect the biggest and most interactive event to date with all the old favourites as well as some new and exciting elements for the entire family. And in June 2019, Heinekein will paint the JEC green as they host Sonic State with a talented music line up and screening of the UCL Final. And that’s just an snippet of what’s on the cards for next year – so stay tuned!

HOW TO LAY THE PERFECT FESTIVE TABLE and wow your guests! Whether you’re new to hosting or are a festive connoisseur looking for some new inspiration and ideas to jazz up this year’s celebration, you’ll love our guide to setting up the perfect table.

36

GET INSPIRED Putting thought and effort into your table will definitely let your guests know that they are appreciated and will set the tone for the entire day of festivities. Creating a truly magical feel isn’t a far stretch but, it does take some planning. It helps to find some inspiration and look for creative and unique ideas. Pinterest is a great place to start. Create a festive board and pin anything and everything that gets your creative juices flowing. Hello Pretoria • December 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

DECIDE ON A THEME Incorporate a specific colour scheme, pattern or texture. Deciding on a common element to carry throughout your décor will make the table look more refined and extra special. Start with a neutral base like a crisp white tablecloth and then add pops of your chosen colours. If you’ve chosen something like stars as a theme you could then bring in this element with your napkins, confetti and placeholders. You could also opt for organic décor which has been a huge trend this year. Pine cones, green foliage and mistletoe would all work well for this. Keep your theme simple and work with only a handful of elements to avoid a cluttered look. CREATE A UNIQUE CENTREPIECE Now that you’ve got your theme down its time to get creative. Your centrepiece should be eye-catching and should incorporate your own unique flair. When creating your centrepiece take into consideration the size of your table, you don’t want it to be too big and have to squash it in but, you don’t want it to be too small and disappear amongst your place settings either. Wreaths, flowers and candles all work great here.

ADD A PERSONAL TOUCH Handwritten menus or personalized place settings will definitely make your guests feel welcomed and special. You could simply just include a card for each guest letting them know why you appreciate them or opt for personalised crackers which are also a great idea and can be so much fun! Whatever you decide to do just remember small gestures go a long way in making your celebration a memorable one. INVOLVE THE FAMILY AND HAVE FUN Setting up the table can be a fun activity for the whole family. Get the kids to help out with small crafts and decorations, after all, the festive season is about spending time with your loved ones so be sure to make every task as fun and inclusive as possible. Put some carols on in the background and get cracking, who says the festivities can’t start before your guests even arrive.

Dewald Wasserfall was born on 11 October 1984 in Empangeni, KwaZulu Natal. Music became his main focus very early on in his life. He began working full time as a musician in 2006 and performs in the band Jy is die Storm. The title track of this album has been doing really well on the charts and Dewald believes that it is his best album to date. Dewald is a talented, seasoned writer. A perfectionist. A passionate world traveller. An awful golfer. A wearer of t-shirts and a mediocre guitar player. He believes in surrounding himself with great people. He also believes that it is important to surround yourself with biltong. We sat down with him to find out more.

Hello Pretoria • December 2018 • Hellopretoria.co.za

What inspired your love for music? Both my parents, although neither were musically gifted, had a great love for music, and we always had music playing in the house. As a child, I discovered music was a great way to express myself and overcome my incredible shyness. What’s the best thing about performing at Afrikaans is Groot? Getting to rub shoulders with people I’ve called my heroes for so long. Working with the best crew and producer in the business, and getting to showcase my craft in front of 80 000 people. Your favourite song at the moment and why?  “Kill for candy” by Dreamcar. It’s just a really new and fresh sound. Great players and a great vocals. Your most memorable performance to date? Playing Lush festival in Clarens this year. It was rainy and muddy and we weren’t sure people would like our music, but we ended up having the best gig ever.

industry in Gauteng?

Best: No matter where you are, you’re 20 minutes away from a recording studio. Worst: People in Gauteng are a little spoilt for choice, so it can sometimes be hard to fill up a venue. Where will we find you jolling on the weekends?

I have a share in a small pub in Centurion called Little Britain Pub, so I spend a lot of time there. Machics in Pretoria East is the only shop I know of that serves Erdinger on tap, and it’s simply the best beer on the planet. I also like going to @The Beach, because it’s one of the few familyfriendly spots in PTA. Your dream collaboration?  John Mayer, although I would just stand there and stare. I doubt I’d be able to get any air out. What can we expect to see from you in the new year?

My new album should be dropping in February or March!
