Hello

ONLINE

www.hellojoburg.co.za

Make sparks fly during the month of love with our bevy of things to do and places to visit in Joburg.

OTT DATE IDEAS

ROMANTIC NIGHT OUT

You’ve survived the first date and even made it past the honeymoon stage. So, how do you keep your lovey-dovey vibes going? We’ve rounded up Jozi’s most romantic restaurants in 2019, from cosy charmers to white-clothed stunners offering long, dreamy brunches, intimate tasting-menu dinners and much more.

Anniversaries, birthdays, first dates, Saturday nights – whatever the occasion, our over-the-top date ideas to sweep your special someone off his or her feet will surely provide you with an idea or two. Of course, nothing says ‘I love you’ like a reservation at one of the city’s most extravagant restaurants, but we’re talking things that they’ll never expect, like being whisked away on a helicopter tour.

Who to follow

We’ll admit it: one of our favourite things to do in our spare time is shamelessly stalking vomit-worthy Instagram accounts that quite literally make us lovesick and give us hope for romance.

@thewaywemet

This may not be the most aesthetically pleasing account, but it has the same appeal that animal accounts do: it’s so adorable that you can't help but to ‘aww’ at every picture. It’ll also give you hope that you’ll meet your soulmate rocking a fiveday-old blowout and hoodie. The account has risen to fame by simply chronicling the way couples – some dating, some engaged, some married – have met.

@HelloJoburgMagazine

OUR TOP FIVE FLOWER SHOPS

Just because we live in a concrete jungle doesn’t mean there’s any shortage of flower shops. Jozi is flooded with bodegas and markets that sell delightful bouquets outside on the sidewalk, but if you’re celebrating a special occasion, you’ll need to visit the pros.

@thecouplesfeed

Nothing causes your gag reflex to go off quicker than a snap of a couple kissing and cuddling while showing off their matching tattoos, but there’s something about these couples that inspires affection. After checking out this feed you’ll believe that even Tinder swipes can one day lead to someone who can look at you like that. Maybe.

FOLLOW US @hellojoburgmag

@peteandtally

On Humans of New York’s feed, you’ll see some of the most heartwarming – and totally inspirational – real-life stories and learn positivity from the people facing the most adverse circumstances. Even if you’re looking to just lighten up your date with a cute photo, this is the account to visit.

V-day TABOO TOPICS to keep you in the clear

We’re pretty sure you’ve been told at some stage in your life to avoid topics like politics, sex and religion when it comes to the family dinner table. Generally, pretty good advice to heed. But are you prepared for your first Valentine’s Day dinner with the latest bae?

This time last year… No matter how awful or how fabulous last year’s date was, your current date doesn’t care or want to know. Telling him/her about an expensive meal at a fancy restaurant just makes it seems like you’re comparing and/or hinting that this is the level of treatment you expect #bratattack. Opposite side of the coin, recounting a story of a date gone terribly wrong with you leaving the restaurant in a huff suggests you could be high maintenance. Wrong thing to project on a romantic date for two. This is the happiest I’ve ever been… And anything else you are feeling that you desperately want bae to feel or say! This could end badly if the feelings are not reciprocated just yet. The last thing you want is someone to say something prematurely because they feel they have to or outright tell you the feelings aren’t mutual. This is a sure way to take your special Valentine’s Day outing from hero to zero before you’ve ordered mains.

6

Hello Joburg • February 2019 • Hellojoburg.co.za

But this really is the happiest I’ve ever been… Pipe down! We know you have probably dated a couple of duds in your day and you reckon this is the most content you’ve been in a long time, so naturally, you want to shout it from the rooftops - but this is the wrong roof. Rather tell your best friend or your mother or your therapist. When you are ready to have those more serious “feeling conversations” don’t do it under the guise of roses and chocolates. I want…. Anything! Using your V-Day date to plan ahead is just an outright bad idea. Announcing to bae that you want four kids, a white picket fence and a duplex in Camps Bay when he’s thinking about backpacking through India could set off alarm bells and send him/her running for the door. Besides, you should be in the moment on this special date. Put your phone away and don’t make eyes at the cute waiter or waitress #tacky. What if we tried this in bed...? If you have any intentions of getting lucky after dinner, do not complain about your sex life. Using this forum to complain about the frequency of your bed antics could end up in a fight and spoil the mood. So where does that leave you on safe topics? Um, politics and religion?

Indulge in Sally Williams Turkish Delight this Valentine’s day

For centuries people around the world have savoured the unique taste and texture of Turkish delight. In Arabic Turkish delight is known as “rāḥat al-hulqūm” which translates to “comfort of the throat’. Inspired by the exotic flavours and fragrant aromas of Istanbul, Marmaris, and Cappadocia, Sally Williams created their own Turkish delight which perfectly complements the Sally Williams’ world-famous nougat range. Sally Williams has taken Turkish Delight to a whole new level, from the manner in which they make it to their world-class technology of cutting each square perfectly, every time. The range of Turkish Delight is made to the exact same level of perfection with which they produce the world’s finest honey nougat and sets the standard for excellence. 1 www.sallywilliamsfinefoods.com

Flight Centre Travel Group predicts 2019s most popular travel destinations at annual Travel Expo

Rand-friendly destinations, such as Mauritius and Thailand, cruising and all-inclusive packages and tours are expected to be travel bestsellers at the Flight Centre Travel Group’s annual Travel Expo. The Expo will be held at the Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg on 9-10 February 2019. “The most popular destinations at the 2018 Travel Expo, based on booking volume, were Mauritius, followed by Thailand, the UK, Australia and South Africa,” reports Andrew Stark, Flight Centre Travel Group (FCTG) Managing Director. “Given the current rand-dollar situation, travellers can really save by booking their holidays to 2019’s trending and most popular destinations as early as possible.” According to Stark, global travel trends for 2019 feature off-the-beaten-track destinations, sustainable travel, cold-climate travel and even (according to Lonely Planet) ancestry exploration for travellers keen to discover their cultural roots. 1 www.flightcentre.co.za

Thule rolls out its first-ever hard shell luggage collection

Werner Bekker is a full-time musician with five years’ experience in songwriting, composition, performance and teaching music. Growing up with creative parents, Werner joined his father on the road at an early age having music ingrained into his existence. He went on to study music at the Campus of Performing Arts and has since written music for various artists, as well as for film. Inspired by the likes of Damien Rice, Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz and Ben Howard, Werner is known for his unique storytelling through acoustically driven folkpop. We sat down with him to find out more. K www.wernerbekkermusic.co.za Q @Wernerbekkermusic E Werner Bekker Music D @WernerBekker P Werner Bekker What was the inspiration behind your latest EP?  'Parts of a Broken Man' (set for release end March) is inspired by things that I have experienced in my life that sculpted me as a person, mostly relationships. Sometimes they take a big chunk out of you and sometimes they fill the holes. These are some of the parts of me. The first CD you ever owned? Hahaha it’s a goodie; Avril Lavigne “Let Go”. Who is your biggest idol in the music industry? In South Africa currently, I'd say Bad Peter. I love how they refuse to be anything other than themselves. Internationally I would say Damien Rice because of his beautiful lyrics and well thought out songs. Where would we find you joling on the weekends? I am a regular at Carvers pub in Darrenwood and also enjoy a good Melville jol! K www.carvers.co.za Do you have any pre-gig rituals? Only one, beer. The urban renewal While we’re all going about our day-to-day lives the borders of our city are constantly evolving and expanding into something extraordinary. We’re talking about the urban renewal happening in precincts like Braamfontein, Ferreirasdorp, Melville, Linden, Newtown, Maboneng and kramerville! We love that our city continues to grow and expand both artistically and culturally along with its people. Our Locals don’t settle for ordinary and these locations are turning into anything but! The Possibilities Joburg has positioned itself as a hub for entrepreneurs as more and more success stories of young, dynamic businesses emerge. Take a look around and really pay attention to the growth of the city. From creatives and craftsmen selling their work at local markets to street performers, artists, restaurant owners and the emergence of more and more local artisanal products the city caters for anyone with drive and passion! Our locals support one another and create the opportunity for growth amongst local talent and brands. The possibilities are open and endless. The Culture It’s no secret that us Joburgers are spoilt for choice when it comes to cultural diversity. The migration of different nationalities to the province has created an eclectic culture that accommodates everyone. Our city is so rich in tradition in every aspect from our music, art and poetry to food and everything in-between. We take pride in our culture and celebrate each and every aspect that makes us a rainbow nation. No matter where you are, you’ll find yourself just a stone’s throw away from a new experience. From shopping at the Oriental Plaza to enjoying food at Little Ethiopia and the unique Asian produce found on the streets of Cyrildene, Johannesburg is a melting pot, a kaleidoscope of ways to experience tradition. The Creativity Joburg is alive with creativity and locals thrive off the artistic developments that are happening each and every day. There’s no denying the fact the Joburg is a hub for creatives whether that be photographers, interior designers, artists, performers or creators of any kind. Our music scene is growing and challenging global standards, our artists are making waves abroad, our designers are setting ground breaking trends and our fashion is truly unique. There is no shortage of growth possibilities in this realm as more and more events are emerging to encourage young creatives. There are a million and one other reasons why we love our city; the nightlife, markets, entertainment, people, weather, shopping, nature and the list will forever continue to grow! #HelloRecommends EDGARS Edgars is showing up differently. In a big way.

Hello Joburgers, Edgars has a whole new focus that goes far beyond a marketing strategy or a series of generic ad campaigns. At its very core, it’s a creative collaboration with South African culture. A collaboration so unapologetically and mesmerizingly displayed by a handpicked crew of some of SA’s most inspiring personalities in a TV commercial that people just can’t stop watching. Featuring the dynamic rapper, writer, actress, and fashion icon Sho Madjozi performing a song she co-created with Edgars, the TV commercial is an electric exhibition of the multi-cultural melting pot of self-expression you’re only going to find on the streets of SA.

Sho Madjozi’s bold, colourful and eclectic collection has seen her break boundaries and inspire creativity. The collection features everything from boobtube bandeaus and printed bodysuits, to running shorts and dungarees plus so much more. The full collection is available at Edgars Sandton City. Happy shopping!

ello Joburg Magazine recently teamed up with the iconic retailer to host a meet-and-greet with the Tsonga princess. The meet-and-greet took place at Edgars Sandton City on the same day as the release of Sho Madjozi’s debut album called Limpopo Champions League and the launch of her first fashion collection exclusive to Edgars. Hundreds of excited loyal supporters queued up outside the store and waited patiently for Sho Madjozi, who arrived in style to her hit single, Huku playing in the background. They were left captivated by her unique and authentic act, which stayed true to her Tsonga culture. The first 50 people in line received freebies from Naked Coffee – a hot cappuccino and a slice of their famous banana bread – to enjoy while waiting to get their autographs signed.

LEARNING HOW TO LOVE MY GUT at Health Works Hyde Park

I’m sometimes (okay, most of the time) busier than I know how to handle, which is why I’m super-dedicated to keeping my body as healthy as possible – and for me, this starts in my gut. For a long time, I’ve followed all the basic gut-health tips – you know; take probiotics, stay hydrated, fill up on fibre, limit foods that are high in fat, eat on schedule and so on – but only recently after a visit to Health Works, did I learn how to take my gut health to the next level.

L

Words Candice May Image Supplied.

ocated in the upmarket Hyde Park Corner shopping centre, Health Works was started almost 25 years ago by owner Linda Weech who’s a self-proclaimed ‘old hippy girl’ and works closely with her colleague Tandy McLeod. Linda started Health Works with the idea of helping people take responsibility of their own health by focusing on what they eat and drink the supplements they take and the quality of their sleep – all factors that can dramatically impact how you feel. The result? Instead of a normal supplement store, it’s a quirky, relaxing, zen kind of space. There’s even a Buddha corner. I arrived at Health Works for my one-on-one with Tandy and was taken through to the consultation room, where they perform all sorts of tests (like DNA tests) for the various services they offer. I was assured that Health Works doesn’t take the place of doctors, but instead assist in your wellness journey rather than focus on a concern or disease. I explained what I knew about gut health to Tandy and then she gave me some fascinating recent scientific information on the microbiome, and how your gut just about affects every aspect of your health.

As it turns out, the little critters (AKA the bacteria in the microbiome) play a starring role in the ability to dictate what we eat, how hungry we are, our cravings and how many calories we extract from the food we eat. They’re also to blame for those unwelcome food cravings. Tandy gave me a full consultation on how to alter my daily diet to optimise my gut health. In the morning, she swears by a cup of warm water with freshly-squeezed lemon to help stimulate the production of hydrochloric acid and kick-start your digestion for the day. She recommends a breakfast smoothie with a scoop of her favourite Vibrant Health Green Vibrance plant-based superfood powder that contains over 25 billion probiotics and, of course, a calcium/magnesium supplement. Tandy recommends Bio-Cell Butyrex. In the afternoon, Tandy says you can’t go wrong with a mega salad loaded with gut-loving ingredients, such as spinach, broccoli, carrots, chopped cucumber, sautéed mushrooms, sugar snap peas, sweet potatoes, black beans and kimchi. Oh, and avocado – don’t forget the avo! Top it all

off with a dressing of apple cider vinegar, which is also great for your gut. Lastly, in the evening, Tandy suggests a veggie stir-fry – a quick and easy dinner that will allow you to go to bed early. While food and exercise are critical to your gut health, she reminds that slowing down and making sure you’re relaxed is equally important. Overall, Tandy says if there’s one single diet that’s best for your gut, it’s the Mediterranean diet – so if you aren’t a vegetarian, this may be a better eating plan to follow for you. I now know why the gut is thought of as the second brain – it sure controls a lot of how the body functions! HOTSPOT: STYLASH Raising the arch for ab-fab lashes and brows

T

hanks to the likes of the Kardashian clan, having voluminous lashes and statement eyebrows has become kind of a big deal. Stylash, a beauty bar that’s just opened inside Flow Hair Designs salon at The MARC is quickly raising the bar (or arch?) for ab-fab lashes, brows and beyond – not to mention selfie perfection. Three ladies make up the Stylash team: Jess, the founder, who opened Stylash as a one-woman operation in 2013 and mastered the art of supernatural lash extensions since before the trend was cool; Kylie, a former tattoo artist who specialises in permanent makeup and paramedical cosmetics; and Adri, who’s trained with an international trainer in brow shaping and specialises in all things brow related. Stylash offers a wide variety of treatments, including lash extensions, microblading, permanent makeup, paramedical cosmetics, microneedling, Plasma Pen, lash lifts, henna spa brow and spray tanning.

Because nothing gets you feeling your best like a fresh spray tan, I decided to end the day with a Fake Bake spray by Kylie, who’s a gifted painter and delivered a thoroughly au natural look. Don’t worry about leaving here with an orange complexion or anything resembling those orange streaks you had after attempting self-tanner at home! If there’s one thing us Joburg ladies always find time for during our workweek or weekend hustle (apart from brunch, of course), it’s pampering – so make sure you pay this one-stop beauty destination a visit the next time you’re looking to spoil yourself. Looking to up my lash and brow game, I visited the pretty-in-pink and everso-chic beauty bar for a classic full set of lashes and the henna spa brow. Jess completely tailored my lashes to my specifications and eye shape, adding more fringe to my lids with high-quality lashes and a non-irritable adhesive that won’t damage my natural lashes. Adri then used a henna pigment to tint and fill in my brows to build a healthy brow that complements my facial features. The results, which are meant to last up to three weeks, are flawless.

Lerato's CORNER An Honest Review… NICE ON 4TH

Breakfast in Jozi is a happy affair on Parkhurst’s perennially lively 4th Avenue. But there’s one particularly bright and breezy restaurant serving freshly-baked croissants, stacks of crumpets and oh-so-original ‘egg baskets’ that’s always packed with Joburgers looking for some serious a.m. fuel – Nice on 4th. So, does this place live up to the hype? I went and found out for myself. A friend and I arrived at Nice, as its affectionately known by locals, for a girls’ breakfast on a Saturday morning. We were lucky enough to snatch a table on the pavement – this place fills up pretty much as soon as the non-existent breakfast bell chimes. The cute eatery’s secret weapon is definitely its menu, which features their famous ‘egg baskets’ in addition to other morning meal favourites. Before diving into our breakfast orders, my friend and I both ordered a red cappuccino. You know a red cappa has been made right when it induces feelings of familiarity and nostalgia! For breakfast, we opted for the two cult favourites. I ordered the standard egg basket – two toast baskets, each with a poached egg, crispy bacon and spicy (not too spicy, don’t worry) tomato relish – while my friend went for the salmon basket, made with scrambled instead of poached eggs and topped with smoked salmon, spicy relish, cream cheese and chives. It’s worth mentioning for those who can’t make up their mind between sweet and savoury, there’s a ‘half and half ’ option that lets you choose one half of any egg basket and a half portion of crumpets – you know, so you can enjoy the best of both worlds. We didn’t have to wait too long for our food, but we would’ve waited a whole lot longer if we had to. There’s only one way to describe it: my idea of the perfect breakfast! That’s a big claim, by the way. Everything on our plates was cooked to perfection. We ordered a jug of refreshing orange juice to wash it all down and agreed that we could happily sit there eating our way through the menu while people-watching all day long. After our meal, we browsed through Nice’s bookshop, which has a lovely selection of cookbooks as well as design and photography books and novels. Warning: you probably won’t leave there empty-handed! So, with that being said, the next time you’re looking to start your day the right way, make a beeline for Nice. Just take note that you can’t book tables for breakfast and it gets super-busy on weekends, so go early if you need a big table.

Today, chef Blake Anderson holds the position of Complex Executive Chef at Montecasino and has over 70 employees who report to him. We get to know him a bit better, from his passion for Mediterranean cooking to his favourite innercity hangouts in Jozi.

Blake has previously held back-of-house positions at fine-dining restaurants around the country, such as commis chef at Myoga and Ginja in the Cape, and head chef at Attic here in Parkhurst (which has since closed down). He was also head chef of Food on the Move, a food delivery service catering to the film

industry. In his current position, Blake offers a variety of cuisines at the Tsogo Sun-owned restaurants at Montecasino. “3SIXTY° Liquid Lounge offers tapas and sharing food with a modern twist and hints of South African culture, while Billy G caters to a diverse market – think cuisine with influences from SA, Asia, India and Italy,” he explains. Of course, he has his own firm favourites on each menu: the beer-battered fish with rustic fries and mushy pea puree at 3SIXTY°, and the slow-braised pork belly in soy sauce and honey at Billy G. Having trained at Cape Wine Academy twice, Blake also knows his wines. His personal favourites are reds from Rupert & Rothschild, Lanzerac and Moreson estates in the Franschhoek region – especially the Rupert & Rothschild Bordeaux Blend 2013 when he can get his hands on the vintage bottle. His favourite cuisine to both cook and eat is Mediterranean, from Israeli shakshuka and Greek baklava to Neapolitan pizza.

“This cuisine allows me to introduce so many different flavours to one dish – it brings a sense of family and just good, wholesome food.” When he has a day off, Blake enjoys spending time in the great outdoors – he’s a trail running enthusiast – or spending quality time with his wife. You might catch him at one of his favourite places in Jozi, like Hell’s Kitchen, Good Luck Bar or Beerhouse. If you plan on spoiling that special someone with a home-cooked meal this Valentine’s Day, Blake suggests keeping it simple and not overcomplicating the flavours. “Stick to one or two flavours and make those the heroes. Also, use quality ingredients.” His fool-proof decadent dishes in the summertime are a cold prawn and mussel starter, slow-braised pork belly with a Thai papaya salad, and Greek yoghurt with summer berry ice cream. HOTSPOT:

J RABBIT TEQUILERIA One tequila, two tequila, three tequila…MORE!

With handcrafted cocktails as the focus, and a tasting menu as a supporting act, new kid on the block, J Rabbit, believes that tequila isn’t a trend, as it has been and always will be around.

T

he brainchild of Paul Lycos and business partner Brigitte Labuschagne, Johannesburg’s first and only authentic Tequileria, nuanced after famed cartoon character Jessica Rabbit, with rabbits coincidentally playing a pivotal role in Aztec and Mayan mythology shakes up tequila like you’ve never seen it before…

Words Taryn Louch Images Supplied

J Rabbit opened in Illovo in November 2018, and Paul, together with Brigitte, chose to create a category they could pioneer in South Africa and wanted to share the many ways to enjoy the stalwart spirit with locals, whilst nibbling on some of the best Argentinian, Cuban and Mexican accompaniments. There are only fifteen items on the Sabor Latino menu, such as the speciality handmade to order Huaraches or the roasted pineapple and corn salsa, which provide the perfect accompaniment to a classic margarita, served with your choice of tequila. With the largest selection of premium tequila and mezcal in South Africa, the cocktail menu showcases tequila like it has never been seen

before, giving patrons an authentic experience with signature offerings such as “The Movie Night,” serving-four-month old 100% agave tequila, infused with the aroma of real popcorn and accented with salted caramel. You would never know you were drinking tequila, and it shouldn’t give you a hangover. For Paul, the greatest reward is seeing patrons eating and drinking what he and Brigitte have created and the unbridled joy it brings them. Similarly to wine, tequila boasts different taste bouquets, depending on the method of distilling; and these subtle differences in flavour can be enjoyed in a variety of ways; whether a vintage tequila is sipped on like a whisky, or a young tequila with more of a bite is used in contemporary and classic cocktails. Brigitte is the creative force behind the drinks and décor, and J Rabbit Tequileria presents the perfect fusion of Mexican cantina meets chic hotel lobby bar and affords patrons an exclusive experience, whether they’re on a date or a night out on the town. With her finger on the pulse of the city and

understanding people, spaces and liquor, Brigitte has been instrumental in the creation of this sexy speakeasy that patrons escape to through the operational CML laundromat. With the faux frustration of finding the place forming part of the unforgettable experience, patrons don’t always want to share the city’s best-kept secret with their friends, but often want to keep the magic of mezcal all to themselves. 147 North Reef Rd Bedfordview - the restaurant is located inside the Comic warehouse m 011 524 7603 Q @kayleesbedfordview Hello Joburg • February 2019 • Hellojoburg.co.za

SEXY FOOD-ANDWINE PAIRINGS Skip the caviar and Dom Pérignon.

Are you and that special someone thinking of staying in on Valentine’s Day this year? Not only will that be refreshing – you’ll also skip the pressure to pick the perfect restaurant, scrambling to get a reservation and paying an arm and a leg to be served dinner that might come out lukewarm (uh-oh!) by a less-than-enthused waiter. But that doesn’t mean the upcoming day has to be anything less than sexy! In food, as in love, the best matchups often happen when you least expect them. This is our guide to an easy, but still romantic, night in of libido-lifting dishes paired perfectly with local wines.

Appetiser: MCC and oysters

The wine: Sprankel Methode Cap Classique Brut| 2014 Where to buy it: From the very gorgeous vines of Babylonstoren for R630. Tasting notes: This is an aged chardonnay a la MCC with fresh apple and tropical tones. It’s smooth and light with all the passion fruit notes you need for a passionate Valentine’s Day. Why it’s a sexy wine: Synonymous with luxury and celebration sparkling wine is undoubtedly one of the most powerful natural aphrodisiacs - no wonder it was Marilyn Monroe’s favourite drink. Thanks to its delicate, bubbly character, this wine hits the bloodstream far quicker than still wine would lending to an instant flush. But, its sex appeal extends further than its delightful fizz and it’s actually the aroma of champagne that acts as an aphrodisiac by replicating female pheromones. The food: Oysters. Why it’s a sexy food: When it comes to oysters the majority of their aphrodisiac appeal comes from the sensual process and experience of eating them. The perfect pairing: We love how the tight bubbles of Sprankel refreshingly awaken the senses. The cleanness of the MCC’s lifted fruity flavour works so well with the briny body of the oysters. A big platter on ice is usually a great idea throw in some caviar and lime wedges and embark on a truly sensual taste journey.

Dessert: a red blend with chocolates

The wine: Anthonij Rupert Protea Pinot Grigio | 2018 (Darling & Franschhoek). Where to buy it: All major bottle stores for a RRP of R55. Tasting notes: Enticing fresh notes of pear, nectarine and honeydew melon with a gentle lemon undertone. This wine provides a medium body glass with a delicious fruity scent that ends dry and clean. You’ll also pick up subtle hints of grapefruit zest, flint and white pepper that lend to a light and refreshing mouthfeel. Why it’s a sexy wine: The Anthonij Rupert Protea Pinot Grigio is characterised by its zesty citrus flavour. Notes like grapefruits, oranges and lime are known to boost confidence which has a major impact on your performance in bed. Add a powerful boost to your cardiovascular system, an abundance of antioxidants for improved mood and that all too familiar decrease of stress hormones that comes along with a delicious glass of vino to the mix and you have a recipe for romance. The food: Salmon Why it’s a sexy food: Like most seafood, salmon has a rich history as an aphrodisiac. Not only is it an excellent source of protein which is essential for stamina but it’s also jam-packed with vitamins A, B, D and calcium which are known to provide that all-important libido lift. Pair all that with a healthy dose of omega-3 fatty acids that elevate serotonin levels and get you in the mood and you’re in for treat. The perfect pairing: To experience the most out of this pairing, serve your chilled glass of Pinot Grigio alongside a silky salmon pasta. Nothing says passion more than twirling your fork through a luxuriously creamy dish filled with rich flavours and a decadent texture.

Main course: pinot grigio with salmon

The wine: Vrede en Lust Boet Erasmus Vinted | 2012 (Franschhoek). Where to buy it: From www.bottleshop.co.za for R199 a bottle. Tasting notes: It’s a medium-bodied wine with pure fruit, bright acidity and fine tannins, and a long and savoury finish. On the nose, you’ll pick up red and black fruit, tobacco and vanilla, plus a little earthiness. Why it’s a sexy wine: The Boet Erasmus, Vrede en Lust’s flagship wine, is an elegant new world-style Bordeaux blend that incorporates Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. The red blend makes you feel warm, glowy and chilled out, but beyond its relaxing capabilities, it’s a healthy dose of resveratrol – red wine’s chief antioxidant that helps loosen things up by stimulating blood flow in essential areas. The food: Bittersweet chocolate (the darker, the better!). Why it’s a sexy food: Chocolate gives you the same positive endorphins that you get from being in love, so when you pair wine, chocolate and being in love together, it’s a deadly combination. Scientists ascribe the aphrodisiac qualities of chocolate to two chemicals it contains: tryptophan AKA the building block of serotonin a brain chemical involved in sexual arousal as well as phenylethylamine, a stimulant related to amphetamine that’s released in the brain when people fall in love. The perfect pairing: To get the most out of this pairing, pair the wine with bittersweet chocolate wine brownies that are made with the same wine that’s in your glass. The wine is big enough to stand out in the chocolate batter and is the perfect sip as you cosy up together. Plus, baking up these fudgy squares is so quick and easy! A FABULOUSLY UNCONVENTIONAL

Valentine’s Day AKA not dinner and roses.

February 14 might as well be called national cliché day. After a while, the predictable bouquets of roses, heart-shaped boxes of chocolates and overpriced romantic dinners start to lose their Valentine’s Day appeal. This year, skip splurging on the same boring gifts and a probably forgettable three-course menu (surrounded by a million other couples doing the exact same thing) and plan an out-of-the-box occasion. The convenient thing about ghosts is that they tend to hang around old cities everywhere, including Jozi. The Mystery Ghost Bus tour starts near the Joburg Gen in Parktown at 7 pm, where you board a luxury bus. Based on the London Ghost Bus, the five-hour-long tour entertains with ghost, murder and mystery stories in the city. The tour offers something for everyone: pub stops to get you into the spirit (excuse the pun) with eerie storytelling at one of the pubs, meals, entertainment, the science of paranormal, live and dramatically recorded ghost stories, historical buildings and several off-the-bus-stops. It ends with a chilling climax in a graveyard – at midnight, of course! 1 www.mysteryghostbus.co.za E @MysteryGhostBus A poetry reading Channel your inner Carrie and Mr Big by visiting Sandton Library and checking out the love letters and love poems of great writers and famous figures. Group and private classes are available and whichever you choose, the environment is guaranteed to be nurturing and positive at all times. Otherwise, go somewhere with live music that makes you want to groove. The newly enlarged Katzy’s in fashionable Rosebank is a top choice – think resident bands, The Grillhouse’s menu, a stellar selection of wine, cocktails and cigars plus more than 100 different whiskeys, fine cognacs and bourbons. Valentina

La Stalla, Coobs, il Contadino and most recently Douglas + Hale have been on our radar for quite some time now and, with Chef James Diack at the head of it all, it’s easy to understand why. While each restaurant is focused on simple, beautiful and flavourful food – which we can’t get enough of – it’s the cocktails that we’re crushing on this month. We caught up with Douglas + Hale’s mixologist Jesse Chinn, the man behind the alchemy, to find out exactly what he’s brewing up for the month of love and more importantly what you can expect from these picture-perfect spots this Valentine’s Day – did someone say his and hers cocktails? We’re in love already! Q @douglasandhale

For Douglas + Hale, my inspiration was the silver screen. With the idea of a movie date in mind. The Kernel will be the his version. The hers will be a Wine Gum Spiked Slush. Ingredients: 2 shots butter washed popcorn infused spiced rum (I used Sailor Jerry) 1 shot housemade salted caramel reduction 1 egg white 1/2 shot lemon juice  1/2 shot lime juice Garnish: Home-made caramel corn

Words Danita Pilley Images Candi Fivaz.

Method: In a shaker with no ice add all ingredients and dry shake to emulsify egg white with other ingredients. Add ice and shake to chill. Strain into rocks glass filled with ice, making sure to get the foamy topping. Top with caramel corn, serve and enjoy.

FLOSS 75

HEARTBEET

VALENTINA

A Candy Floss twist on the classic French 75. This will be the hers for La Stalla. My inspiration for this was going for a completely kitschy idea of Candy Store Lovers. That nostalgic 50s idea of getting candy for your love. For the gents, I will be doing a Sherbet Old Fashioned.

My inspiration for this was an earthy, au naturale kinda love. With a drink that looks like the blood pumping through our veins. I wanted to use raw ingredients like beetroot and ginger that give that earthy feel of a true mortal kinda love. This will be the hers for Il Contadino.

This is a more sophisticated cocktail that will be the hers for Coobs. My inspiration was the box of chocolates you pull out at the end of a dinner date. Beautifully crafted, both with look and taste. The taste profile of this will be white chocolate, black raspberry and rose, almost Turkish Delighty. The his will be based on the Seville Orange dark chocolate.

Ingredients: 1 1/2 shot Tanqueray Gin Ball Candyfloss 1/2 shot lemon juice 1/2 shot lime juice  Top with L'Ormarins Brut Classique Rose Garnish: Love Hear ts Method: Place Candy Floss ball in Mar tini glass. In a shaker filled with ice, add your gin and lemon juice and give a vigorous shake. Strain into a separate receptacle and charge with about four shots L'Ormarins Brut Classique Rose. To serve, pour your gin, lemon juice and bubbles over candy floss ball and watch it dissolve into drink.

Ingredients: 1 shot Mezcal ( I used Amores as it has a beautifully smokey finish) 1 shot Chambord 1 shot housemade cocoa reduction 1 shot pressed beetroot juice 3/4 shot lemon juice Thumbnail fresh ginger muddled 3 dash orange bitters Charged with ginger ale Garnish: Dehydrated beetroot rim and orange slice

THE KERNEL CARAMEL CORN RUM SOUR

Ingredients: 1 shot Chambord 1 shot Creme de Cacao  3/4 shot Monin Rose Syrup Dash chocolate bitters Charge with L'Ormarins Classique Rose  Garnish: Rose petal

Method: In a shaker, muddle your thumbnail of ginger. Add ice and combine your Mezcal, Chambord, cocoa reduction, beetroot juice, lemon juice and orange bitters. Give a vigorous shake and double strain into a Linz glass filled with ice and rimmed with dehydrated beetroot dust. Charge with Ginger Ale and add garnish.

Method: In a shaker filled with ice combine all ingredients except bubbles and shake vigorously. Strain into chilled Coupe and top with pink bubbles. Float a rose petal and serve.

Get to know Jesse Chinn Jesse creates his cocktails around a concept or character and loves to embody the spirit of an idea in his creations. His signature drink - The Black Pearl - is an inky, glittery number garnished with mystery that is inspired by his love for rum and being a pirate. I'ts quite literally the personification of smoke, mirrors and magic. Jesse’s standard cocktails are designed classics done in three ways for the purist at heart, the slightly adventurous and the wild child looking for something new. Taste your way through his menu at Douglas + Hale! Best known as the Johnny Depp pirate with a killer music selection, you’re living under a rock if you haven't tried one of his drinks. travel Beachcomber Canonnier Golf Resort & Spa

S

et beneath sweet smelling palm trees, this 2,000 km country, encircled by a broken ring of mountain ranges and more than 150 km of translucent white sandy beaches, comes to life. The world's thirdlargest coral reef exists here which surrounds the island and, speckled in-between the azure waters, are an array of uninhabited islands. Traditional fishing boats prowl for the freshest tuna along the waters edge and inland in the capital of Port Louis you’ll find beaming smiles from Mauritians -multiethnic, multi-religious, multicultural and multi-kind. Here is your invitation to discover Mauritius with our top three hotel picks for the month of love: Beachcomber Canonnier Golf Resort & Spa - BEST for the whole family Park any problems at check-in. This distinctly Mauritian style hotel is perched on a peninsula with two beaches along the North coast of the island. This is definitely the best location on the island, the winds and storms are relatively calm, and the weather is stable and glorious. You couldn’t, in fact, get any closer to the beach and because of its pristine location, with little swells and dots of beautiful coral, you’ll gladly stay in the turquoise warm waters all day long. This hunk of oceanfront is reason enough to stay at the hotel and of course, you’ll find mini charming thatched huts all over the beach with lounges ideal for bronzing besides the water’s edge.

Beachcomber Canonnier Golf Resort & Spa

The hotels aesthetic is one that blends in with its natural surroundings, refurbished in 2017 with natural stone colourings, grey textures and wood,

it’s traditional yet soft and simple. But, most important to note, is their astute awareness of plastic wastage and eco-friendly practices. This is no more apparent than with meeting executive Chef Moorogun Coopen, who has been with Beachcomber for twenty-nine years. If it’s ethical, sustainable eating and living you’re after for your vacation, this hotel demands attention. Not only does a culinary scientist visit the hotel and kitchen on a monthly basis but their focus is also always on seasonal ingredients and sustainability. Boasting a smart kitchen, a different themed dinner every night, proudly hosting fifteen female chefs in the kitchen, a tandoori oven and wood-fired pizza oven and the only hotel in Mauritius to make their own smoked marlin, it’s the best example of buffet style culinary cuisine we’ve experienced in a long time. Apart from this buffet style offering at the Le Frangipanier Restaurant, there is also the Le Navigator Restaurant with a 180-degree view of the ocean and La Serenata Italian Restaurant. After dining there is a choice of a massage below the allamanda flowers and goliath banyan tree. The entire spa is built inside this exquisite tree and its branches, with only six elite treatment rooms, enveloped by volcano rock pools and the gushing sound of waterfalls the retreat is complimented by the songs from the birds above. This isn’t just a massage it’s a ritual and the unspoken rule is to fall into a drowsy haze. It’s a sensuous art of deep, delicious relaxation and without a doubt should be at the top of your bucket list. The Canonnier experience is a winning formula, definitely one to write home about. There is seven km of unspoiled beach in the forefront and lurking behind is the majestic Le Morne Mountain. Soaking up the beauty of this location has never been easier; it’s breathtakingly perfect with utopian characteristics and grandiose natural marvels. Days are spent in one of their one hundred and seventy-two exclusive suites, which have been adorned with luxurious fabrics and wooden finishes. The rooms are exceptionally spacious all with their own balcony overlooking the marvellous view. There are also six pools begging to be used (one specifically reserved for adults only) all overlooking the mountain and the cherry on top has to be the discovery of the ice-cream beach bar. It is guaranteed that you’ll stuff your face with their delectable, velvety smooth, creamy, homemade ice cream selection. We devoured at least two or three scoops daily. The coconut is a flavour-bomb in the mouth and after a freshly caught seared tuna for main; it hits all the right spots.

I was 10 and my father bought two huge bags of, you guessed it, jewellery parts and miscellanea. What is it? An unquenchable enthusiasm for making jewellery that’s been with me for over 20 years.” At the age of 29, Aleks broke it off with her corporate career and fell straight into the arms of her true love, jewellery design. And with a string of accolades later, it’s clear she made the right move. Last year’s winning PPC piece: Tiara of the Heart & Head was a showcase of the lightweight quality of concrete as well as its potential to accompany traditional jewellery materials. Possibly a hard sell for the jewel purists back in the day but certainly an approach poised to trend amongst today’s consumers. The piece utilises a glass fibre reinforced mix called Texcrete, combined with crushed Azurite, Turquoise and Lepidolite and applied onto a base of woven brass wire. The student from the Liz Loubser Jewellery School then used sterling silver for all the metal accents and finished it off with a sea-green velvet ribbon. Aleks remains ever grateful to her mentors through the years and continues to learn. “The Teachers at Liz Loubser Jewelry School and the designers at Tinsel Gallery are phenomenal artists and it is invigorating to experience their work on a regular basis.” She continues to attend classes twice a week and says she would miss out on the “injection of enthusiasm” she gets from the learning environment if she only worked from home. Aleks is currently developing the digital presence of her company Night Shine Candy Jewelry and is creating collections for the launch of its online store at the end of February.

LOCAL INCENTIVE TRAVEL DESTINATIONS Bucket-list locales that are sure to please your top performers

Whether it’s meeting the golden gaze of a lion deep in the African wilderness, strolling along the white sands of the azure Indian Ocean Islands or riding vintage motorcycles through the picturesque Cape Winelands, there’s no shortage of incredible incentive travel destinations in Africa. But your top performers deserve the very best – they deserve something new. After all, the same-old-same-old destinations won’t motivate them to put in all that hard work. From the road, Ellerman House looks like an awe-inspiring private residence (of which there are plenty in ritzy Bantry Bay). Once you make it through the front door of the intensely private yet incredibly warm main house, you take the art-lined wooden staircase down to the lower floor, which leads through a series of tasteful lounges to a shaded veranda. This gives way to manicured lawns and a full-frontal sea view that’s reminiscent of Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens – just by the sea. It’s a view you won’t easily forget; one that makes it easy to understand why some guests don’t leave the property during their stay. 1 www.ellerman.co.za

One&Only, Le Saint Géran

While Mauritius has the greatest concentration of luxury hotels in the Indian Ocean, the 40-year-old Le Saint Géran still stands out above the rest. A visit to this island classic is similar to a visit to the Empire State Building – it may no longer be the glossiest or fanciest of its kind, but it’s still perfectly capable of taking your breath away. The property is immaculately maintained – just like any slick beach hotel should – and is best described as a dazzle of whitewashed villas, swaying palms and thatched beach umbrellas that mysteriously look like acacia trees from afar. 1 www.oneandonlyresorts.com

All of your safari dreams come true at this decadent tented camp in the Masai Mara, equipped with cushy director’s chairs, drifty curtains, vintage Burgundy, Mozart arias on the gramophone, well-chilled cocktails and, of course, private decks with sunken lounges to take in the quintessential views. The hidden, forested setting that’s made to feel bigger by the access to the next-door camp is nothing short of magical and goes hand-in-hand with the warm and thoughtful service. You even get your own private butler, so if you enjoy the feeling of being taken care of, you’ll love it. 1 www.andbeyond.com

Candy TSAMANDEBELE Born Candy Mosekedi Mokwena and widely known as Candy Tsamandebele, this amazing vocal prowess was born in a musical family at Ga- Sedibeng village, Bolobedu, a village under the revered Rain Queen Modjadji’s leadership in the Limpopo Province. Musically colourful as her name suggests, Candy Tsamandebele was affected by her cultural upbringing and has been interested in music for as long as she can remember. We sat down with her to find out more.

Your favourite and least favourite thing about the music industry in Jozi? As an artist who has been in the industry for over two decades, I have seen it all – the ups and the downs, so I do not have a favourite and least favourite thing. With that said, I've learnt that it is supposed to be that way in order for an artist to grow and explore different things. A song that best describes your personality? Most of my songs really describe me, for instance, a song I did with Bhekezela titled Hupenyu Unenge Viri really shows why I am that

64

Hello Joburg • February 2019 • Hellojoburg.co.za

person who loves and respect languages – the song features more than three languages.  One wardrobe must-have? Definitely traditional clothes and accessories. You can really find a way to wear both in so many different ways depending on the occasion fusing them with existing day-to-day clothes and accessories. Your favourite project/gig to date? All of them basically since they either allow me to grow as a performing artist or push me to greatness. I love growth and I think it is important. What’s one weird habit that you have? Humming melodies when I am busy gardening or cooking. It is supposed to be a time to just rest my voice and my me time. I find it annoying at times. What can your fans look forward to from you in the future? More and more music. I released my third solo project recently Hupenyu Unenge Viri available on digital platforms and in stores.

Words Danita Pilley Image Supplied

What inspired your love for music? Witnessing first-hand what music can do to your soul. I used to accompany my mom all the time when she went for rehearsals and during performances, she was a percussionist for a traditional group called Khekhapa ( a group usually formed by ladies in villages in Bolobedu as a vehicle to preserve the Balobedu culture and the language itself). I would see the members of the group so happy and fulfilled by just doing what they truly enjoyed. It was an amazing experience! I had never seen something like that before.
