GOOD NIGHT. TODAY WILL BE HARD TO BEAT. UNTIL TOMORROW. Quite a day, wasn’t it? Beginning at Point Udall where you were the first person in the United States to see the sun rise. Followed by diving through the underwater wrecks of sunken vessels. And then touring a working rum distillery before, finally, having a romantic dinner overlooking a pristine beach. Amazing day. Tomorrow can’t come soon enough. So you can take on your next adventure.

EDITOR’S NOTE I was recently stranded in an airport in Venice, Italy bound for Paris. I’d done three countries in one day; eleven cities in one week. As we waited for our plane—me rocking back and forth with my cashmere scarf wrapped not-so-elegantly around my head—we couldn’t help but laugh. It’s hard to take yourself seriously when you come to the inevitable conclusion that despite our delusion of self importance we don’t actually control much in this world. If there’s one thing travel will provide time and time again—regardless of your budget—it’s a good dose of humility. I took my first trip around the world at the age of twelve and have never really stopped. For me travel is about getting lost, discovering the unknown

and learning that the good in this world far outweighs the bad. Every trip you undertake has the ability to inspire and transform because it takes you out of your comfort zone and into another’s reality, challenging how you view and appreciate your own. In this, our first Travel Issue, we take you around the world in eighty pages. We discover footwear’s hottest up-and-comers in Denmark and Sweden; traverse the cobblestones of Portugal to go behind-the-scenes of their footwear industry; hit the beaches of Australia with swimwear designer Lisa Maree and of course, deliver showstopping heels from every corner of the world. We hope it will inspire you to finally book that trip of a lifetime. Life is short, travel well.

RUTHIE DAVIS CEO & DESIGNER Ruthie Davis RuthieDavis.com “I’m always trying to cram as many pairs of shoes into my luggage as possible. My trick is to stuff my shoes and boots with clothes or whatever else I might need instead of packing them individually. It’s the perfect space-saver for any shoe lover!”

MARTI HORWITZ CREATIVE DIRECTOR Martí Shop-Marti.com “I pack lots of jersey since it travels well and doesn’t take up too much space. I like to go for bold when packing accessories, a piece of statement jewelry can totally transform a look from day to night.”

EFVA ATTLING FOUNDER & DESIGNER Efva Attling EfvaAttling.com “I always take a shoe for every outfit—I’d rather have too many than not enough, that’s my rule. Fancy tops are better than big dresses, then you can mix and match with basic black slacks for every occasion. And it doesn’t take up space. I’d rather have the shoes!”

DELPHINE-CHARLOTTE PARMENTIER CREATIVE DIRECTOR Delphine-Charlotte Parmentier DelphineCharlotteParmentier.com “I always travel with a hat from Maison Michel and put all of my jewelry inside the hat. Each piece of jewelry is packed in an individual pouch and arranged vertically, one on top of the other.” HEAVEN HAS HEELS summer 2013

marieka ratsma

Hailing from Denmark, twenty-eight year old Marieka Ratsma is a budding shoe and accessory designer you need to have on your radar. Ratsma recently graduated with a degree in fashion design from the Utrecht School of Arts. It was her stunning Biomimicry shoe, a school project, which first caught our attention as it made it’s way from the classroom to the pages of Dutch Grazia Magazine and then onto New York as part of FIT’s breathtaking Shoe Obsession exhibit. And this is only the beginning for this talented up-and-comer. Ratsma experiments in high concept craftsmanship and although she has yet to produce a wearable, shoppable collection, her vision is as clear and creative as some of the top designers of this generation. “I love exploring materials and new techniques, whether it is in clothing or accessories and shoes,” she explains. “Exploring and collaborating makes design an adventure, and no one day is the same.” A fiendish traveler, Ratsma enjoys venturing to new destinations and experiencing new things. “I love nature because it’s endless, and science for trying to explore and explain its wonders.” This passion seeps into her designs, creating an aesthetic that is futuristic, intricate and daring. “I believe that when it comes to design, anything goes,” she says. “I love it when designs raise questions or discussion. When

I finally have an idea, I let it sit in my head for a while before starting the making. Kind of like a good old cheese.” This process led her to design two small lines of 3D printed accessories alongside developing her shoes. “The rings are designed to have the viewer take a second look or question what they are seeing. For example, the Stoneless series uses the principle of something not being there, but because of that absence it actually draws attention to it.” 3D printing is the latest craze in fashion design experimentation, so Ratsma’s enthusiasm towards the medium comes as no surprise. Though she is in the nascent stages of her business, Ratsma already has expansion in mind. She hopes to push her designs into the future, taking advantage of technology and production, as well as make things available for customers to actually wear. This focus is a variable that makes Ratsma stand out amongst other creatives. Oftentimes the industry sees talented designers go nowhere because their designs are solely focused on being artistic and passionate, regardless of whether they possess the ability to be worn or produced. Ratsma’s foresight into this process is what makes us the most excited about seeing her brand develop. Hopefully in the coming seasons, there will be a ready-to-wear collection available of Marieka Ratsma footwear. You can bet that we’ve already put our name down for a pair. — SAMANTHA LIM

newWHEN SHOISE GREAT MINDS COLLIDE The ongoing hunt for the latest in inspirational shoe design has brought us to the heart of Stockholm, where The Shoise Initiative of Sweden has been quietly but steadily flourishing for the past year. Shoise was founded by designers Petra Högström and Matilda Maroti, who met while attending the Swedish School of Textiles— two students working toward their dream of becoming clothing designers. After graduating, they spent their days working at what they describe as “very commercial” fashion companies, collaborating in their free time on their own art projects. It was the result of one of these projects that led to the inception of Högström and Maroti’s interest in shoe design.

HEAVEN HAS HEELS summer 2013

HEAVEN HAS HEELS summer 2013

“We did our first handmade shoes for an exhibition and we got a lot of attention for them,” says Maroti. “This was when we realized how much we enjoyed working with shoes.” “We felt that it was a more sculptural way of working compared to clothes,” adds Högström. “We also realized at that point that we didn’t want to work in the super commercial world. We love working with ‘slow design’ where you have time to be experimental, creative and to push the border between art and fashion.” That idea of “slow design” is the overarching philosophy of Shoise, evident as Högström and Maroti focus on giving life to their creative impulses and trying out every new idea that pops into their heads. “We feel very free in our design,” says Högström. “We give ourselves the pleasure of [taking] every idea and pushing it to its limit. We hope to inspire other designers to do the same.” Interestingly, the biggest inspiration behind the pair’s incredible designs comes from the materials themselves. “We love finding inspiration in unexpected materials for shoes, such as the shoe [“Re-Motion”] that we made with recycled motor parts,” says Maroti. “We are also very fascinated by shapes, forms and silhouettes,” says Högström. “We love the part in our design process where we can work very experimentally and kind of build the shoes piece by piece until we find the right silhouette.” As a result, every shoe the duo creates, from “White Owl,” made of ceramic and vegetable tanned leather, to “Melt Down,” created from recycled materials, rubber and a second hand doll, is a breathtaking work of art. But Högström and Maroti are adamant that they

do not intend for all of their pieces to be kept behind glass, citing musicians Madonna, Jessie J and Robyn as potential dream customers. “The first collection was very much art pieces, since the aim was a big art exhibition,” says Maroti. “But the collection we are working on now will be a little bit more wearable [while] still having the same expression and uniqueness. We will also work in more exclusive materials, which we hope will inspire more people to wear them.” It seems inevitable that a new fan base and clientele is right around the corner for Shoise, as the designers revel in their recent success. Perhaps even more impressive, the pair is currently working on a new exhibition of their work that will be held in Stockholm, where celebrated designers like Jean-Paul Gaultier will also be showing. Moving forward though, Högström and Maroti are most concerned with staying true to their design objectives and getting their work to like-minded shoe enthusiasts. “We are always looking for new customers who want to express themselves through our shoes,” says Högström. “We [would] love to see customers in show business, but another goal is to make runway shoes for big conceptual fashion brands like McQueen or Prada. [But] we want to keep Shoise unique and exclusive, so we are not looking for any mass production.” Impeccably designed and curated shoes for a select clientele of true shoes-as-art obsessives? It looks like Shoise is poised to fulfill our deepest fashion desires, one heel at a time. — KERRI JAREMA

When you arrive in Lisbon— Portugal’s historic capital— you’d be right to question its position as a leader in footwear. Its picturesque cobblestone streets and endless hilly terrain don’t make for an easy commute in designer heels. However, this land of time-honored traditions, picturesque beaches and delectable food has continued to adapt to the marketplace, leveraging its proximity to Europe and its tradition in leather artistry to become the eighth largest export of leather footwear. “Portuguese footwear can be considered part of our history,” says Patrícia Valério, Portuguese footwear journalist. “We have the knowledge of old artisans who have been working with leather since the Middle Ages; a crucial part of our industry. Portuguese navigators brought to life the concept of globalization, and that can be found in our footwear.” “Made in Portugal” is a label you will see more and more in middle to higherend footwear. Initiatives such as the CEC-madeshoe project was lauded as a landmark in European competitiveness introducing

radical improvements to the production process. Biodegradable shoes, intelligent shoes (shoes that are able to adapt to the environment) and seamless shoes are among some of the innovations. It’s not only the advances in manufacturing however, that make Portuguese footwear so unique—it’s a combination of design and comfort that sees many flock back to their “Made in Portugal” footwear. “From the large selection I have here in my wardrobe, I’d say the uniqueness of Portuguese footwear has something to do with not only the design but with the comfort factor,” explains Fiona Bunnett. A runway model, writer and television host, she calls Portugal home and knows first hand what shoes are going to make the grade in her wardrobe. “Portuguese streets can be difficult to navigate so your shoes need to be comfortable without losing that fashion “wow” factor.” Being the world’s largest exporter of cork gives Portugal an advantage over other manufacturers when it comes to adding comfort and support. “We work with leather that can be colored

involving unique technology and innovation,” says Valério. “And cork is an important component to provide comfort in platform shoes, for instance. These small details can make a big difference.” France and Germany remain some of the biggest buyers of Portuguese made footwear with over 27 million pairs being exported each year, although the country’s fashion industry is very much involved in design and manufacturing. On the runway at MODALisboa, Portugal’s premiere fashion event, you’ll see designers such as Miguel Vieira and Nuno Gama showcase head-to-toe designs utilizing the country’s resources to give fans a truly unique aesthetic that is steeped in quality. New and emerging designers are beginning to join forces with manufacturers to produce ontrend collections that aid in the private label business and help propel local designers into the international spotlight. The First Lady herself owns a pair Luis Onofre’s heels—one of Portugal’s most beloved footwear designers. Throughout the world many are starting to walk the walk when it comes to “Made in Portugal.”— ANGELA GILLTRAP
