EDITOR’S NOTE

T

o often we view love as an external force, something that is beyond our control. We lament its loss and celebrate its capture. For me, love is found in the passion with which we approach life. From the way we greet our neighbor, to the devotion we have for what we do—in good times and in bad—love is something that we control. In this, our Love Issue, we wanted to celebrate the passion with which artisans approach their craft. From the husband and wife team of The Seasons Hats to designer Anica Buckman’s obsession with the Far East, the flame of creativity is ignited by love. Whether you’re celebrating single-dom this Valentine’s Day or looking affectionately into the eyes of “The One,” remember that love is all around you, if only you dare to look. May your heels always be as high as your standards,

THE ESSENCE OF ANAKOVNA AN OBSESSION WITH THE FAR EAST MAKES WAY FOR THE SCULPTURAL STYLE OF FASHION’S HOTTEST YOUNG RISING STAR, ANICA BUCKSON OF ANAKOVNA. PHOTOGRAPHY WENDY TAM

F

ashion does not have a postcode. It isn’t found on the streets of one particular city. It’s not owned by one particular culture. It’s an artistic expression inspired by our experiences. While we look to the traditional houses of Paris and Milan, a new generation of designers are catching the eye of consumers thanks to Online hubs such as NotJustaLabel. com. Much like the curator of an art gallery, they bring together note-worthy design talent, such as Anica Buckson of Anakovna—a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design inspired by Asia. Buckson’s infatuation with the Far East was ignited by her Aunt and Uncle, who lived in Japan. For this impressionable girl

from Boston everything from the clothing to the anime (Japanese cartoons), seemed mysterious and fascinating leading. It was her path to design, an unexpected one... “I always thought I would become an illustrator or a comic artist,” she muses. “From a young age I constantly drew, mainly anime. I would invent characters, create stories and draw detailed illustrations. They were like my fashion muses. Eventually, I became more interested in the clothing design and the garment details than the characters or stories.” Buckson didn’t realize she had the potential to become a fashion designer until her freshmen year at Rhode Island School of Design where college professors gave her the faith to pursue fashion design. “At first I lacked confidence in myself as a designer, but eventually, I came to the conclusion that I should believe that I am worthy of being one, even if the thought of failure was scary.” It’s the opportunity to make works of wearable art that intrigues Buckson, drawing inspiration from the fabric itself— how it drapes, feels and the natural forms it takes. With international expansion on the horizon and an Online fan base waiting for more, this designer is definitely one to watch. Anakovna.com — A.G.

THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS AN APPRECIATION FOR THE PLIGHT OF WOMEN IN HEELS, LED FURNITURE DESIGNER OMAR ANGEL PEREZ TO DAZZLING NEW HEIGHTS.

I

f we’re honest we won’t even pretend that our love of high heels is unconditional. At the end of a long night when we’re bruised and bleeding, we’ll toss them to the curb, curse them, and swear we’ll never fall for their charms again. And yet, we do. Soon the scars fade and before we know it, we’re repeating the same mistakes, all thanks to the seductive charms of the perfect heel. It’s this intimate, yet curious relationship that furniture designer Omar Angel Perez explores in his fantastical footwear creations. For over 20 years, Perez has been a furniture designer/builder, always on the hunt for new ways to be creative with materials he’s had on hand—he never expected to find fame in footwear. “My venture into shoe design began as a joke,” he explains. “My close friends know how much I appreciate women in high heels, so as an offer of gratitude, I designed my first single shoe sculpture to express my thoughts of what I think a woman goes through to wear them. My first piece was entitled, “My Shoes Are Killing Me,” and the outrageous height, elegant materials and band saw blades for straps all describe my vision of the sadistic torture a fashion forward stiletto wearer must experience.” Employing a “Frankenstein” approach to footwear design, Perez likes to use materials that “have no business being in footwear design.” Tripe bike chain, band saw blades, metal watch straps or pun metal bowls are all items you’ll find in his creations. “I love juxtapositions of

unlikely materials which, when paired together, create a visual friction yet always manifests into a cohesive, wearable sculpture. I especially enjoy working with metal which although is rigid and unforgiving, can be shaped, polished and softened to create a modern silhouette.” These striking sculptures quickly found an audience landing in publications and exhibits around the world. It was here that photographers started asking, ‘Do you make pairs?’ “Even with years of experience designing furniture, while creating my first wearable pair I discovered that the ergonomics, engineering and fit of a high heel was far more difficult to master than any table, chair or cabinet I’ve ever built,” he says. “I also found that supporting a model on roughly five square inches of surface area proved much more challenging than supporting a fourteen person dining table.” Navigating through the many design challenges, Perez insists that although his designs may look intimidating, they are made to be worn—”you won’t be able to wear them out shopping for the day or jogging but they are created to be part of the outrageous and sexy drama that in my mind, wearing high heels is all about.” Requested by stylists and magazine editors, worn by the likes of Lady Gaga, what began as an inside joke has definitely blossomed into a phenomenon, perhaps because we feel someone finally gets our complicated relationship with our favorite footwear. SEASONS OF LOVE

THE LOVE AFFAIR THAT PRODUCED STYLE SUPERSTARS: THE SEASON HATS.

A

degree in Natural Sciences may not be the obvious path to millinery success but then again, The Season Hats is not your average label. The brainchild of husband and wife team, Paul Stafford and Selina Horshi, the two met at Girton College, Cambridge University over a decade ago. Working out of London, they produce Instagram-worthy creations that the pair describe as “luxurious, contemporary, directional and flattering.” Their 2016 Spring/ Summer collection is all about soft, geometric forms with leather brimmed hats, headbands and headpieces hand-finished with Swarovski crystals and pearls. Enhancing the brand’s signature style is a new range— made of French satin—that fold flat. These designs speak to our contemporary lifestyle (and lack of hat boxes). Offering modern creations that honor the time old traditional of millinery is at the heart of the brand’s success. A regular at London and Paris fashion week they have been featured in editorials around the world and continue to go

from strength to strength since debuting in early 2015. For Paul, it was the ability to combine his creativity with his scientific and logic thinking that drew him to millinery. After graduating with a degree in Natural Sciences, he trained under Royal milliner Rachel Trevor-Morgan learning the traditional skills and handwork necessary for success in this competitive industry. He then took a Masters in Womenswear, specializing in millinery at the Royal College of Art. Selina, comes from a literary background, graduating with an MA in English Literature from The University of Cambridge. Her career began in the International Advertising department at The Times and Sunday Times in London. She then spent five years at The Economist, leaving her role of U.K. Digital Manager to start The Season Hats with Paul. A match made in heaven, we can’t wait to see what’s next from this force majeure. TheSeasonHats.com — A.G.

TREASURE HUNTER UPCYCLE THE WORLD WITH JEWELRY BRAND RUST MINER. PHOTOGRAPHY MICHAEL ARAFAT

T

he average person generates over 4 pounds of trash every day and about 1.5 tons of solid waste per year. While 75% of this waste is recyclable, we only recycle 30% of it. Brazilian jewelry brand, Rust Miner is out to change that. Founder Raphael Fagiolo turns trash into treasure creating hand made jewelry from discarded materials such as bike parts, leather scraps and metals mined from a variety of origins. It all began when he and his partner were searching for jewelry that fit their own aesthetic— something rustic, unique and different. It was by chance that he began to see the possibility of making accessories from discarded materials. “When we stop to think about it, we realize that each piece

has a different emotion,” explains Fagiolo. “Every material carries it’s own story—the journeys of the bicycle chain, the watches that have carried lives, told in minutes. It is all very poetic and inspiring.” For Fagiolo, this development was the beginning of a journey he hadn’t anticipated. “Being a jewelry designer has taught us that we can contribute to the beauty of people’s lives and at the same time consciously make them rethink how we discard and consume.” Apart from being stand out pieces on their own, a Rust Miner piece takes virtually nothing from the environment and very little “energy” to create. It’s a win for style and a win for the world. RustMiner.com— ANASTASIA RUBIN

MODEL MOMENT

WE CATCH UP WITH ONE OF OUR FAVORITE FASHION PEEPS PAULO SILVA, AS HE EMBARKS ON HIS NEXT EPIC ADVENTURE. PHOTOGRAPHY DYLAN KRUGER One of the best things about fashion, is the people. Behind this seemingly frivolous world, is a community of dreamers that are attracted to the opportunities this industry presents. Paulo Silva is one of them. We first met at ModaLisboa— Lisbon Fashion Week—when he made his runway debut for Nuno Gama, the country’s premier menswear designer. He walked off the catwalk and never looked back, landing a modeling contract that saw him travel the world shooting editorials and campaigns for some of our favorite brands. A devoted husband, talented individual and all-round nice guy, I caught up with the as he embarks on his next journey, his own footwear line. — ANGELA GILLTRAP What do you love most about modeling? I love the possibility of traveling the world; making new friends and experiencing new cultures, it’s wonderful. The work itself is challenging but we are privileged, and should be thankful for having such a great profession. What have been some of your favorite assignments? Mm.. I can’t really say because all of them have been important to me, from sports campaigns to minor jobs. I guess if I had to pick one, maybe I would say my last TVC for Sportscheck. I got to do what I love most: work as a model while training CrossFit. It was non-stop working out, running, jumping... It was a blast! What has working in the fashion industry taught you? That there’s always someone better than you. You have to keep that in mind, just do your best and relax. What’s yours will come to you. If it was not meant to be, forget it and try another time. You recently moved to South Africa, what was the reason behind that? I’m half African. I share a blood bond with this

amazing continent. South Africa/Cape Town, happens to be the best city in Africa to work as a model. I have been thinking about this for the last four years. This was the right time to come and it’s been amazing so far. What do you love about it? The culture, the people, the food, landscape. Nature is all around you. It’s paradise on Earth. Sometimes you don’t know if you’re here to work or on holidays. What does an average day look like, for you? I wake up at 6:30 am, eat my breakfast, go to the park for a morning workout. Come home, take a shower, have a nice meal and hit the castings. At night, I just relax, drink some Cabernet Sauvignon on the porch and watch the sunset. Free days, I go to the beach hike in the mountains. What other passions drive you? I love Sports and Adventure traveling. I can’t life without sports and I can’t stay quiet in the same place for too long. I need to constantly move. My other passion, is my family, wife, and friends. I love to be around them and can’t stay away from them for a long period. I’m a mama’s boy in a certain way. When you’re not modeling what do you love to do? Wherever I go, I always try to live like the locals. I’m always looking for something to enrich myself. I love to talk to new people, dine at cultural restaurants. What do you have planned for 2016? For 2016, I’ll try to work as much as I can on my dreams, and hopefully, see my new brand come to life. I am launching my own shoe brand this summer. Fingers crossed. I hope I get it right!

online confessions BEHIND-THE-SCENES AT OUR FAVORITE ONLINE DESTINATIONS. All Hail The Queen earrings, 7CharmingSisters.com

What if you could surround yourself with fabulous jewelry, work with your best friends, and connect with likeminded women around the world? Well, the crew from 7CharmingSisters, do exactly that. In this, our ‘Love Issue,’ we thought it fitting to go behind-thescenes with CEO Paula, to see how these seven ladies have turned their passion into one of our favorite Online destinations. — 7CharmingSisters.com How did the concept of 7CharmingSisters.com come about? The 7 Charming Sisters are not sisters by blood but bonded by work. We’ve all worked together for quite some time. Some of us, for over 15 years. Even though we are all different — different likes, interests, religion, personalities, etc.— we love to work together. When we started 7 Charming Sisters and were searching for a name, it was a natural fit. You can find our entire story on our website, 7charmingsisters.com, under “About Us.” It’s called A Charming Tale.

How Low Can You Go necklace, 7CharmingSisters.com

What does an average day look like for you? We’ve been open for three months. As a start-up, we are all still wearing many hats. It’s a bit of a cliché, but truly, no day is alike. I can honestly say that the one thing that is a constant is a lot of laughing. We joke around so much that I’m surprised we get any work done! Do you ever want to run away with the merchandise? Each of the sisters has their own line, and we all get every piece in our line to keep and wear. We have to admit, it’s awesome. However every once in a while, some of the sisters decide to veer away from their regular style and try something new for the day. They usually end up trying to swipe pieces from the other sisters’ lines from inventory. Jennifer usually ends up locking the inventory cabinets and hiding the keys. We also

have a lot of jewelry throughout the offices as decorations. Employees are free to borrow the items as long as they return it — Except for Kimmie, she always keeps it! What do you love most about working on 7CharmingSisters. com? Besides working with each other, jewelry is a new avenue for us; something we discussed doing for a long time. Finally pursuing it is incredibly exciting for us. But we do have an employee lounge that is set up as a “Glam Room.” Lots of make-up and vanities, clothes, fluffy sofas and rugs. We end up having our meetings in there instead of the conference room many times. What items are you loving right now? The Spring Collection. There are so many fabulous pieces; it’s hard to have a favorite. The collection will have a lot more items that are gold or silver plated with crystals and semi-precious gems. The unique thing about 7CS is we have something for everyone. Since each sister has their own style, each of them would give you a different answer. Two of my favorite pieces are the All Hail The Queen earrings and Dripping in Luxury necklace. What exciting developments can we expect? There are so many things we’re excited about. Popular Monthly subscription boxes have now been including our pieces to assist in getting our name out to the public. We are also re-designing our website to include a new Style Quiz to help our customers determine which line suits them the best. Our most exciting upcoming development will be several interactive features on the website that our customers will love.

They come in handy after a long day. Sequins or Satin? Sequins and any metallic. Even just a little shimmer or sparkle on something and I am drawn like a moth to a flame! Overdressed or Under-dressed? Overdressed. This doesn’t mean a super fancy dress all the time, but rather pieces that are put together. It can still be a sweater and jeans, when it’s done right, it can look really put together. Tiny Tote or Enormous Bag? Enormous bag for sure. I have even upgraded recently to the “fashion backpack.” Current contents: Laptop for work, Mega Headphones for music, fruit snacks to avoid hangry outbursts, notebook and pen for jotting down ideas (so much more fun than on the phone), Talaria Flats in a few colors, in case a photo opp presents itself, and a few too many gum wrappers. What’s Your Fashion Mantra to the Masses? Good shoes take you good places. If You Were a Shoe, What Shoe Would You Be? A Talaria Ballet Flat! Comfort and durability right when you need it.

How did you and Alex meet?

We met through a mutual acquaintance while at university in 2005. The three of us became good friends, and then a year later we founded our company together, Zeitlounge.com (in 2005 it was still called Watch-Shop.com). It is an Online store for watches, which still exists to this day. Over the years, Alex and I were also able to expand the business and open a brick-andmortar watch dealership. In August 2016, we will be celebrating the ten year anniversary of Zeitlounge so, it’s going to be a very eventful year for us. How did you become involved in the brand? Just like every other kid who grew up in Thüringen in the 1980s, both Alex and I had a Ruhla alarm clock that woke us up every morning. I still have mine, and you can see it the video about the history of Ruhla watches that we created. Our parents had Ruhla wristwatches too, so it was rather depressing to see a brand you grew up with disappear practically overnight in the early 1990s. This hit home particularly hard for me since I grew up only thirty minutes away from the city of Ruhla. In the 1980s there had been almost 8000 watchmakers working in and around Ruhla and most of them became unemployed after the factories were shut down. These days, things are going much better for the city of Ruhla and its residents, despite the fact that their watchmaking industry disappeared. Still we receive a lot of inquiries about Ruhla watches in our ‘offline’ store from customers who are wishing to buy one. After years of turning these customers away, we slowly realized that Alex and I are probably Ruhla’s best chance of making a comeback. So here we are!

What makes you so passionate about Ruhla? Ruhla is a brand that we have always loved and that we thought we knew well. So in the beginning, we felt rather confident—we felt like we were the right people for this undertaking. Only after we did our research did we figure out what big shoes we had to fill. Ruhla was a major trendsetter in the watch industry for quite some time, both in the realm of watch design and movement technology. As it turned out, Ruhla had an extremely extensive and interesting collection, which made the brand’s disappearance all the more of a shame. In taking up this challenge, we were inspired by Glashütte, another region of Germany known for its watchmaking industry. Their industry never disappeared entirely, but it did suffer from a major downturn, from which it was able to recover. Nowadays they only produce expensive timepieces. Our ambition is to make timepieces the average customer can afford. What makes TUW Ruhla different? Ruhla watches have been known for their reliability and their accessibility to the average customer. We intend to carry forward this tradition. While not cheap, our watches are certainly affordable. In addition, we’ve made sure that our maiden collection provides exceptional value for money. As watch salesmen, we know our market very well, and we can tell you with absolute conviction that you’d be hardpressed to find a better deal for our asking price. Another thing we noticed is that many of the watches in our price segment (USD 100 - 500) are all about inventing a fashionable name and logo. At TUW Ruhla we have the chance to go a different

way since we have the rich tradition of Ruhla watches to fall back on. This is why we are not only bringing back the Ruhla name, but also the unmistakable designs, the innovative spirit and, of course, the place of origin of these watches. No other manufacturer in our price segment can claim to do this. How have you found the reaction from the watch industry to the re-launch? The feedback has generally been positive! Many of our colleagues from the Ruhla region were excited to see that someone was finally stepping up to the challenge of reviving the brand. The only negative criticism we experienced was from the people who thought that our designs are too new and trendy. However, this was a conscious decision on our part, since we did not want to be a retro watch brand. We combine the old with the new to give a sense of continuity to the Ruhla brand. We use many design elements which made the Ruhla watches so unmistakably unique in their own time, and we give them a modern feel. After all, the watch is to be worn today. What exciting plans do you have in the works for 2016? We have too many plans to accomplish in 2016 alone, but there is one particular project we can’t wait to dive into. We are going to create a limited edition of TUW Ruhla watches together with Dr. Sigmund Jähn. Dr. Jähn was the first German cosmonaut in space, and he is a big supporter of Ruhla watches. On his space mission, he carried with him four Ruhla watches, three of which he presented to his Russian colleagues. The design of our own watch has already been finalized, so it’s only a matter of bringing it to the public. TUW-Ruhla.com

YOUR BEAUTY QUESTIONS ANSWERED Q: Is it bad to sleep with wet hair?

JUAN CARLOS PAJARES

ESTHER NORIEGA

LAUREN + VANESSA LaurenandVanessa.com

disheveled by design DAVID CATALAN

A. Going to bed with wet hair is fine! The key is to set your hair with the right products. We love Oribe’s Foundation Mist and Supershine Moisturizing Cream. If you want to wake up with a soft wave, secure it in a bun twisted at the top of your head or the nape of your neck — depending how long your hair is. You can also braid it. Remember to not make the elastic too tight so you don’t have a harsh line of demarcation when you take it out in the morning. No-tug ribbon hair ties are also a great alternative to elastic rubber hair bands. —

THE HOTTEST RUNWAY HAIR TRENDS

Celebrate the perfection of imperfection. The antithesis of the slick bun, carefree hair is all the rage on the runway so embraces your flyaways and aim for the ultimate in casual cool. We ask Selda Cortes, our resident hair stylist, to weigh in on the beauty of this season’s hottest hair trend. What kind of hair styles lend themselves to creating a carefree look? “Carefree” always works with clean hair. The beauty about this hairstyle is that you can design your own signature look depending on your hair texture and length. What tools do you need to achieve it? A comb, your fingers and a product to help achieve texture. I would recommend Full Effect from Eufora. What are three essential elements you need to creating a carefree, dishevel-by-design hairstyle? Don’t worry too much about technique, this is the time to be creative and experiment! What do you love most about this style? I’m fond of how flexible it is. As the day goes on, the hairstyle still looks great and doesn’t need to be touched it up. How hard is it to perfect? You need to keep in mind that this is a disheveled hairstyle. It’s not about perfection or technique, it’s about feeling liberated and independent.
