hroughout history many unhealthy substances, including lead, have been used as ingredients during various times in the history of makeup. Modern day cosmetics are more controlled, regulated and their ingredients and the potential side effects are more fully understood. However, recent research by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) indicate that there are approximately 400+ bestselling lipsticks on the market today that have tested positive for lead. There is no safe dose for lead exposure based on these recent scientific studies. Since lead is a neurotoxin, even a small dose can be unhealthy and ultimately dangerous. Many feel the cosmetics industry is ignoring these findings of toxic metals in lipstick, arguing that because the dose is so low per application that there is no reason for concern. The exposure of even a little amount of a toxic chemical over a long period of time can add up to potential harm. Repeat daily low exposures of a chemical like lead builds up in the body over a period of time and ends up being a significant exposure. A few of the health concerns linked to the exposure of lead are: • Neurotoxicity has been linked to language impairment, learning disabilities and behavioral problems • Menstrual irregularities and hormonal changes • Puberty delayed in girls • Delayed development of testes in boys

• Reduced fertility in both women and men If you are like me, giving up my favorite lipstick would be hard to do. The ingredient label on lipstick product does not disclose the lead content and this is true from the more affordable to high-end luxury brands. So what can the consumer do to safeguard herself from the level of lead in lipstick products? * Do your research. Call, write or email the company that makes your favorite lipstick shades and inquire what the lead content is in their product. Indicate that lead-free products are very important to you. * If you frequently reapply lipstick during the day, consider cutting back on the number of times you do this.

* Keep lipstick away from children. One of the side effects of lead consumption in children is the interference with normal brain development. To date there is no single documented case of lead poisoning as a result from using lipstick. A well-informed consumer who knows the potential hazards of lead in lipstick can then decide which product they feel are best suited for them. Caution should be taken when using unauthorized imports and counterfeit cosmetics that have evaded the scrutiny of government regulatory agencies. ost people have a basic understanding of lead poisoning. They know that ingesting lead is the cause. They know enough not to let their children chew on paint chips. Some may know that older neighborhoods and older homes may have lead seals on the water pipes, and this could cause lead poisoning. The facts about lead poisoning can – and should be – frightening. Prevalence of Lead Poisoning The most common source of lead poisoning is lead paint, which was used in nearly all homes built before 1978. The EPA further estimates that close to 75% of occupied residential housing built before 1980. In most cases, older lead paint has been painted over with latex or oil paint with no lead in it, but remains in the house. In many cases, there are surfaces in the home where lead paint remains uncovered and unrecognized, such as inside cabinets or closets.

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that one in six children in the United States has lead levels elevated high enough to cause some degree of physical impairment or damage. The damage due to lead poisoning includes shortened attention span, impaired hearing, liver and kidney damage, poor perceptual integration, neurological damage and poor classroom behavior. It’s not just eating paint chips though. There’s a common perception – or misperception – of the typical child who gets lead poisoning. He’s from a poor family, with parents who don’t watch carefully enough to notice that their child is picking up chips of paint off the floor and eating them. Or who is allowed to gnaw on a windowsill by parents too busy to move the child away. People may assume that the house must be dirty – it could never happen in a home where the floors are kept clean and there is no dust.

Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Eating paint chips isn’t the only thing that can cause lead poisoning. In fact, chances are that few of the children diagnosed with lead poisoning ever picked up a piece of peeling paint and deliberately ate it. Paint erodes and wears away, sometimes chipping and peeling. The big chips and peels are only the most obvious sign of deterioration. Tiny flakes and paint dust get stirred up in the air where children can breathe them in. The dust, almost imperceptible, settles on the floor and other surfaces where it gets on children’s hands and clothing, and from there, onto their toys and into their mouths.

Children may also ingest lead in the water if a house has older plumbing with lead fittings, or from toys imported from countries with lower lead paint standards than ours in the USA.

Tips to Prevent Lead Poisoning in Children 1. Let water run for 60 seconds when using tap water for food or formula preparation to flush out any water that may be contaminated with lead from standing in the pipes.

Health-Wellness & Nutrition

Environmental Diseases: How to Prevent Lead Poisoning

2. Wipe down painted surfaces regularly with a damp cloth to pick up any lead dust and avoid disturbing it. 3. Report any peeling, flaking or worn paint in your apartment to your landlord as soon as you notice it. It is the responsibility of the landlord to keep the property in good repair. 4. If a nearby house is being demolished, keep windows closed and wipe down surfaces regularly. There’s a good possibility that dust from the demolition contains lead. 5. Avoid buying painted toys, crayons and clay that were imported from another country. If your child is diagnosed with lead poisoning and you have reason to believe that your landlord or management company was negligent, contact an attorney to discuss your options for bringing suit to get compensation for your child’s medical difficulties and needs. It’s comforting to believe that. It means that lead poisoning won’t happen to our children if we just keep the house clean enough, and a close enough eye on the children.

Why Some People Take Advantage Of Kindness By Oliver J.R. Cooper

I

f someone had the chance to get something for free, they could either take what they need or take as much as they could. Another way of looking at this would be to say that they can act with grace or they can act with greed.

weakness. The taker may believe that if the ‘giver’ were to behave in the same way, the giver would end up taking advantage of them. So the only way they have to protect themselves is to stop themselves from being kind and to take advantage of others. This shows that they are living in the past as opposed to living in the present moment.

Two Outlooks When someone only takes what they need, it could be said they are behaving in the right way. Yet if they end up taking more than they need, it could be said that they are taking advantage of the situation. In the first case, the person has the ability to think about their own needs and the needs of others; whereas in the second case, this is not occurring. Empathy With the ability to empathize, not only does someone benefit from what is taking place; others benefit. In their mind, they could believe that they are in a fortunate position. Therefore, they don’t come to the conclusion that they are entitled to take as much as they want. If they took more than they needed, they might end up feeling guilty. The Absence When someone is unable to put their own needs to one side and think about others, their behavior might have a negative effect on others. They may also believe they deserve to take as much as they want. Thus, it they don’t see the situation as being given a gift but given what they are entitled to. This outlook doesn’t result in guilt. Alternatively But if they were to think about others during this time, they may think about how they would do the same thing. Therefore, even if they didn’t take more than they needed, other people would. With this outlook, they

believe that they are only doing what other people would do if they had the chance. What this would show is that they are unable to see that not everyone sees life in the same way. Projection So although they are unable to see themselves in another person’s shoes, what they can do is project their perspective onto others. It is then not that they have a certain outlook: that everyone has the same outlook as them. This shows that they are completely attached to what is taking place within them and as a result of this; it is not possible for them to observe their own inner processes. And all the time they continue to be this way, there is not much chance of them experiencing life differently. Everyday Life However, while the above is one example of how someone can take advantage of other people’s goodwill, it is also something that can take place in their daily life. When this happens, the people they come into contact with on a regular basis as well as the people they meet on the odd occasion are both affected.

Instant Impact When this happens frequently, someone could up feeling as though they have been used. It could then be normal for them to feel angry or they could end up feeling down. If it was a friend who took advantage of their kindness, this could be something that they have become accustomed to. It could then be said that the relationship is not very healthy. Now And Then However, if this is something that takes place occasionally, it still has a negative effect on relationships. Yet when these takers do this to people they rarely see, the takers might not be around to face the consequences of their actions. It is clear to see that one’s relationships are going to suffer all the time they behave in this way. They could end up in a position where they no longer have any close friends, and the people they take advantage of from time to time could also avoid them. Meaning When one takes advantage of another person’s kindness, it could be said that the taker sees it as a

A Deeper Look There could have been a time in the taker’s life where someone took advantage of them. This then set them up to believe that if they don’t take advantage of others, other people will take advantage of them. While this experience could have occurred during their adult years, there is a greater chance that it was during their childhood. Awareness So unless they take the time to look into what took place and then work through the pain that they experienced, they are likely to continue to see life in the same way. If they want to change their life, it may be important for them to reach out for support. This support can come from a therapist and/or a support group. Last Resort Option For Those Suffering From Major Hemorrhoid Flare-ups By Alex Lerner

H

emorrhoid surgery is often a last resort for many patients. Many times, the condition is treated with diet modifications, topical creams, sitz baths and herbal treatments. In severe cases, however, surgery is required in order to correct a more serious or chronic situation.

to the anesthetic given prior to surgery. Once it begins to wear off, your doctors will ensure you can effectively urinate and then send you home. Occasionally, some patients develop an inability to urinate after the procedure due to swelling or spasms in the pelvic area.

Traditional hemorrhoids surgery, called a hemorrhoidectomy, is sometimes an inevitable solution. This procedure is painless because you will be given either general anesthesia or a spinal anesthesia. During surgery, an incision or incisions are made around the hemorrhoid tissue. The enlarged vein is tied off to prevent further bleeding and the offending hemorrhoid is then removed. Depending upon the size of the incision, the area may be stitched up or left open. The actual work will be completed with either a scalpel, laser, or cautery pencil and is done in a surgical ward. While it sounds unpleasant, most patients receive treatment and are then sent home on an outpatient basis, though those at high risk (the elderly, distance patients, and pregnant women) may be temporarily hospitalized after the hemorrhoids surgery. Today, many hospitals have begun to experiment with a new procedure that involves the use of staples to remove the hemorrhoid and seal the wound. It is believed that the new procedure is less painful post operation and may result if faster recovery time. Discuss options with your physician to see what path is the best for your particular situation. Hemorrhoids surgery is usually considered an option for those with very large hemorrhoids. 6 CELEBRATING

What About Non-Surgical Treatments? Often, non-surgical treatments continue to be ineffective with internal hemorrhoids and surgery becomes relevant. External hemorrhoids are usually more painful than internal hemorrhoids and when pain is uncontrollable and/or keeping the area clean becomes problematic, then surgical intervention may be advised by your doctor. Prolapsed or thrombosed hemorrhoids (internal hemorrhoids that drop into the external anal area or blood clots) may also be reason for surgery. After hemorrhoid surgery, you will feel little pain for 6 to 12 hours due

After any surgery, pain is expected. Your physician will prescribe pain medication. Avoid taking any other medications without your doctor’s explicit permission. Some medications may induce excessive bleeding, so it is best to take only those prescribed by your doctor. After the hemorrhoid surgery, some bleeding should also be anticipated. This is especially true during the first time you try to move your bowels. Pain can be lessened by applying the pain medication directly to the site before and after moving your bowels. Stool softeners may also help promote soft stools, thus reducing pain. Diet and Natural Herbal Remedies After hemorrhoids surgery, many people have found that proper diet and more natural herbal remedies are very successful in reducing recovery time and promoting healthy healing. Introducing a proper diet – one rich in high-fiber foods, juices, and water – is important because it nurtures the development of soft stools. It goes without saying that becoming constipated post

hemorrhoid surgery will be quite uncomfortable. Another viable alternative and/or addition to topical pain relievers is the use of supplements such as horse chestnut, vitamin E, oat straw, and zinc oxide. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant. Zinc oxide actually helps provide a protective barrier on the skin to reduce irritation, pain, burning, and itching. Horse chestnut reduces swelling and inflammation and has the same irritation-prevention properties as zinc oxide. Oat straw has been proven to be effective in helping hemorrhoids surgery patients fight off depression and cope better post operation. Another very useful herbal supplement is mullein. This wonderful extract of leaves and flowers acts as a soothing agent for inflamed and swollen tissue. All these supplements work well alone, but many people have found that using them in conjunction with one another is very successful. Of course, this is in combination with dietary changes and prescribed pain relief to combat the pain and recovery time of hemorrhoid surgery. Alex Lerner has been researching digestive disorders for many years, focusing on treatment and management options. Alex contributes regularly to the Treating Hemorrhoids Guide, a site dedicated to diagnosing and treating hemorrhoid flare-ups with conventional and alternative therapies. HERE are two things I’ve learned about relationships. The first is that people appreciate you appreciating them. The second is if you don’t appreciate them, you do have another chance through apology. These two things I’ve learned hinge on the Maya Angelou wisdom – people’s memories can be woefully non-existent, but when it comes to how we as people experience emotion, we’ve got memories like elephants. The latent muscle memory of feelings is so potent that it doesn’t matter how much time goes past; a bad experience is rarely ‘forgotten’ and traumatic experiences are etched deep in the soul. Feelings are palpable, and if we think we’ll get away with our nonchalant dealing with people, we’re sorely mistaken. They won’t forget just as

we don’t forget. We may know that our Bibles tell us to forgive, and we do wrestle with what we feel, but it won’t change how we feel. This is why apologies are so crucial. The power in the apology is so cogent that even if we felt abused, we’re able to receive God’s healing grace in order to be able to genuinely forgive. But where there’s no apology, even a petty transgression leaves us with a non-trusting attitude toward the person who infringed.

Running Speed and Endurance Training By Christopher Barruca

D

eveloping both speed and endurance is the recipe for how to run faster. Speed is a combination of strength and power. Strength is the maximum force your muscles could produce. It is developed through hill training but also with some weight training that should be focused on lower body parts. Power is a neuromuscular capacity depending principally upon the fastness at which muscle fibers can be recruited for force execution, and then movement. It is trained through short sprints and track repeats workouts. For example, 60m short sprints repeats with complete recovery is an excellent way to stimulate the neuromuscular system in a way it is forced to engage as much force as possible in a very short bout of time. Less structured types of exercise like fartlek or strides are also utilized to develop speed; these are methods not leading to a high level of tiredness while significantly enhancing speed-oriented capabilities of the runner. It is proven that

neuromuscular system has memory. Not stimulating speed-oriented components during training is a sure way to not succeed in being fast in the future. When strength and power enhance, and speed is brought to an acceptable level, the next step is to work at maintaining this speed for a longer period. After all, it is the prime principle of long distance running: run fast and long. Speed endurance is the term employed to qualify this capacity; it relies upon the ability of the muscles to maintain the high and fast force production longer and longer. One challenge to deal with when training endurance is the production of lactic acid in tissue at a certain speed called Lactate Threshold. The fine art of training consists of elevating the threshold so that good speed is kept on an extended amount of time. Admittedly, lactate threshold pace can be maintained for one hour. It is then just above halfmarathon pace for non-elite runners.

To train speed endurance, you should make middle to long length repeats on the track at a pace above lactate threshold. For example, this means 800 meters or 1k repeats at 5k race pace. Recovery should be kept short to not give muscles the opportunity to recover completely, and then simulate endurance conditions and race rigor. Finally, working below lactate threshold allows you to make longer repeats length or split tempos for a duration that could extend to one hour at marathon pace. This type of work allows your body to situate precisely in race conditions and to teach muscles the speed they should maintain for this time duration (sometimes feeling so long during the race). What are Cannabinoids? effects. Cannabinoids are found in nature and made by the body. They may also made in laboratories by humans. Each strain of cannabis contains a different ratio of phytocannabinoids, providing relief for a diversity of symptoms.

ost people have heard of THC and think of tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. THC is one of the approximately 85 known cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are the active molecules in cannabis (marijuana) that cause physiological

Cannabinoids are like keys that fit into receptor sites called CB1 and CB2 receptors. A variety of disorders may be treated with cannabis because of the many locations where CB1 and CB2 receptors are found. CB1 receptors are mostly found in the brain and CNS; however, they are also found in the spleen, lungs, liver, kidneys, endocrine gland and parts of the reproductive, GI and urinary tracts. CB2 receptors are mostly found in immune system cells and in red blood cells.

When a cannabinoid attaches to a receptor on a cell membrane, it activates multiple intracellularsignal pathways. Activation of CB1 receptors provides neuroprotection after brain injury and treats pain, depression, anxiety and nausea. CB2 selective agonists are effective in the treatment of pain, inflammatory diseases, osteoporosis and atherosclerosis. Certain tumors, especially gliomas, express CB2 receptors and can be treated with cannabis. In the City of Sacramento, a medical cannabis patient can find a variety of strains of cannabis with different cannabinoid percentages at a dispensary that provides laboratory testing like A Therapeutic Alternative. The cannabinoid profiles will most likely contain: Tetrahydrocannabinols (THCA &THC),Cannabidiol (CBD),Cannabinol (CBN),Canna bigerol(CBG),Cannabichromene (CBC), and Tetrahydrocannabivarins (THCV &THCVA). THC is the only psychoactive cannabinoid. It’s not psychoactive until it is decarboxilated, which occurs with heating it above 250 degrees F. At that point, the acid (A) breaks off and the cannabinoid becomes THC. THC-A and THC both affect the body. According to cbdscience. com, “THCA has been shown to modulate the autonomic nervous system, the immune system, and microcirculation. It relieves pain due to inflammation and has anticonvulsant, antispasmodic, and antioxidant properties. It is reported to be antiproliferative (anticancer)...” THC is a mood elevator, reduces nausea and stimulates appetite. [THC and CBD are found in highest concentrations in cannabis and are therefore the most

studied cannabinoids. CBD counteracts the psychoactive effects of THC. It is most commonly used to reduce nerve inflammation, nerve pain, muscle spasms, seizures and anxiety.. THC is converted to CBN as it is degraded by oxygen. CBN has sedative effects and is used as a sleep aid. It is also has anti-bacterial properties and has been used to treat extreme staph infections such as MRSA, according to a 2008 study conducted in Italy. CBC works with the other cannabinoids to produce synergistic effects. It stimulates bone growth and inhibits cancer proliferation. Its anticancer effects stem from its synergistic relationship with anandamide (an endocannabinoid). As you now see, cannabis is more than just a weed. It has been used for thousands of years as a medicine and we now know why. As a science buff, I love the fact that the science and research is progressing. H&F

hile antibiotics save lives, overuse of antibiotics in the past has resulted in some bacteria that are now resistant to almost every form of antibiotics available. The bacteria responsible for tuberculosis is resistant to rifampicin, which was the drug of choice a few years back. Treatment of acne with tetracyclines has failed for the past few years, too. This is because the bacteria are resistant to certain antibiotics. It was a routine practice to hand over antibiotics to treat ear infections or flu symptoms some years back. But now, it’s better to adopt a wait and watch policy. Doctors usually don’t prescribe antibiotics initially and focus more on improving the immunity and nutrition of the individual. Antibiotics are prescribed only if the symptoms don’t subside. This approach annoys some patients because they have to go back to the doctor if the symptoms don’t improve. But remember, we have

already created strains of bacteria resistant to antibiotics that are proving to be a big challenge to fight. A little inconvenience now might save us in the future.

4) Don’t save any antibiotics for the next time you get sick. Discard any left over medication once you have completed your prescribed course of treatment.

Medical Suggestions to Prevent Antibiotic Resistance Here’s what you can do:

6) If your doctor tells you that you don’t need an antibiotic, don’t demand one.

1) Avoid taking antibiotics on your own. The continued use of antibiotics has allowed bacteria to change, adapt and become harder to destroy. Some infections may be viral, antibiotics wont help in such situations.

5) Do not take antibiotics prescribed for someone else. The antibiotic may not be appropriate for your illness.

Editor’s Note: It’s nice to believe that you really can do something about antibiotic resistance, but what is missing in this article is the fact that a lot of the protein foods we eat are from animals fed big doses of antibiotics. The antibiotic resistance starts here. By the time you get an

infection and take an antibiotic, the microbe is already resistant to medications. There is a solution: learn the natural healing way to deal with infections. Herbs contain medicinal constituents that don’t allow microbes to mutate. Switch your paradigm and start the natural remedies first. Often, you’re only one natural remedy away from your solution. You don’t have to suffer from medication failures or even complications and death from infections.

2) Doctors usually prescribe broad-spectrum antibiotics (which help against a variety of bacteria and are not specific). They ask you to come back if your symptoms don’t subside. Follow the instructions and never switch to another antibiotic without prescription. 3) Always take the full course of the antibiotic. Usually antibiotics should be taken for 5-7 days but always follow the instructions given by your doctor. Even if you get better before the completion of your course, you must continue the treatment. If antibiotic treatment is stopped before the prescribed date, the most resistant bacteria might survive and spread. January/February

How to Get Started With Handstands By Andrew Van Ness

W

hen you want to do a handstand, be certain to focus on your form.

Prepare Your Wrists First The very first thing you want to do to prepare for it is wrist preparation. To do this, put your hands on the floor, shoulder width apart, and rock your body backwards and forwards. Hold the forward position for a few seconds before moving on the back. Next, turn your fingers back and do the same thing, but hold the back position instead of the forward position. And ultimately turn the wrists over and lay the back of your hands on the floor. This might be uncomfortable, but if it is too uncomfortable for you, just simply move your hands closer to your knees.

If you’re ready to attain this, you are most likely prepared to move on to the free-standing handstand. Before you do this though, practice the L-Stand position to open your shoulders. As if you were doing the Wall In position, walk up the wall and bring your legs to 90 degrees with the wall and your body. Push down and away from the floor. Now You’re Ready for the Handstand You should be ready for the free-standing handstand at this point and there should not be much effort to achieve it (if you have spent a bit of time to master the previous positions). If you’re doing a free-standing handstand and you feel as though you are going to fall, turn your

Hollow Body Hold is Next Next, work on the Hollow Body Hold to help you prepare to achieve the handstand. Lie on the floor. Move your chin to your chest, and keep your shoulders down. Bring your legs off of the ground to hold a 90-degree angle with the rest of your body and also keep your knees at 90 degrees. Then straighten your legs and slowly lower them back down, and extend your arms. Wall In Position and Wall Out Position Start handstands with the Wall In position. Start doing handstands against a wall with your belly facing in toward the wall. If you have difficulty with this, it is maybe a sign that you need to work at improving your shoulders. Walk your feet up the wall. Then lock your arms and hold the position. Bend your ankles so your toes flatten out against the wall. When you’re feeling confident, move your feet away from the wall and balance. Try to keep the hollow body hold here. To get out of this position, bring your feet back to the wall and then walk them down again. Then progress to the Wall Out position. With your head facing toward the wall, kick yourself up into the handstand position. Straighten your body and perform the Hollow Body Hold. Practice pulling your feet from the wall without falling down. 14 CELEBRATING

body out as if you were doing a cartwheel to safely come down. If you’re a newbie and you need to build up to doing these exercises, start with the Hollow Body Hold, then progress to Wall In, then Wall Out, then the L-Stand, and then the free-standing handstand. To start, do one position for 5-10 seconds and do 6 sets. When you can do this, then add 5 seconds... And at last work up to one minute. When you can do this for one minute, move to the next challenging position. Ultimately you can work your way up to the freestanding handstand. f you are overweight and want to slim down by running, then congratulations goes out to you because you have just made the right decision. Running is one of the best exercises to lose weight because not only it will instantly burn excessive calories and fat, but it will also improve your fitness level and lessen the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Here are four tips to help you start running and cut those unwanted pounds: 1. Believe in yourself. Running is not an easy task for anyone if they are out of shape but especially difficult if you’re overweight. Nevertheless, believing in yourself can produce miracles. Your beliefs are like the set of rules that dictate your mind. Therefore, if you strongly believe you can become a slim, healthy runner, then the chances are good that you will be able to reach that goal.

4. Log your runs. Log your runs to analyze what you need to improve. A running log can help you to track your progress and doing this is crucial for your success and constant improvement.

Sports and Fitness

Running Tips For Overweight People

On your running log, track your distance, pace and the type of workouts that you have completed on a regular basis. Additionally, you can clearly see the progress of your fitness and weight loss goals so you will never lose sight of them. This is a great tool to boost your motivation as a runner. These tips are very helpful. Take action on them now. If you do not take action, then nothing will ever change. By the way, if you want to improve your running form and technique to avoid injury, please visit http://UltraRunners.Info and get our 5 Simple Steps report to help you becoming a faster and stronger runner. H&F

You can use visualization to develop your self-confidence, motivation and performance throughout your running program. 2. Build up slowly. Don’t try to do too much running too soon. This is a big mistake and can lead to injury and health problems. If you are running too much during your first days of training, then you will burn out and become disappointed. Accept the fact that you might not be able to run even a block at first due to your fitness condition. Start slowly and develop the intensity as time goes by. For example, you walk for 25 minutes three times a week in your first month. Then begin to add 30 seconds of running and one minute of walking during your workout days in the second month and so on. 3. Regularly check your heart rate. Check your heart rate to make sure that you are not doing too much running too soon. If your heart rate in the morning is too high – between 6 and 12 beats per minute than its regular rate, this means you are doing too much. Check your heart rate in the morning and log your data in your running journal. As your training progresses, your pulse will also improve. Your heart will become more efficient to pump blood and work on your muscles.

Skin Benefits From Papaya By Jim Gilbertson

D

o you have bad skin and want to do something about it? If you do, you may be thinking of consulting a dermatologist. Well, stop that thought for a while. Before spending your money on a dermatologist, you may first try to improve the beauty of your skin with the natural fruit of papaya. You’ve read it right. Papaya. It’s a fruit that contains the papain enzyme, responsible for helping your digestive system have regular bowel movements. Papain is also responsible for the many benefits that papaya offers to your skin, which includes the following:

4. Moisturizes your skin. The flesh of the papaya has a high concentration of water and essential fats. Both these hydrate and moisturize your skin making it glow. 5. Reduces signs of aging. Papain also increases the development of collagen and elastic fibers in your skin, which causes the skin to plump up in a youthful look and reduce wrinkling. This lessens the number of wrinkles on your face, making you look significantly younger.

1. Helps heal wounds faster. Adding the fleshy parts of a ripe papaya fruit to your wounds will help heal your wounds faster by preventing bacteria to infect the wounds. The papain enzyme also helps produce the proteins needed to repair the wounds faster. Papain enzymes also make wound scars heal lighter in color and smaller. 2. Repairs damaged skin. Papaya contains flavonoids and vitamins that act as antioxidants. The antioxidants repair skin cells that are damaged from exposure to too much sun, chemicals and other skin irritants. 3. Exfoliates rough skin. When you mash the papaya flesh into a paste, you can apply this paste to the skin. The papaya acts as an exfoliator. The papain enzymes can enhance the shedding of dead skin cells and therefore leaves you with rejuvenated skin.

6. Conditions the hair. When prepared as a pulp, papaya can also be used for conditioning the hair. How To Use Papaya to Fit Your Skin Type In order to fully obtain the benefits of papaya for the skin, consider matching the application to your skin type.

Oily Skin If you have oily skin, mix the mashed papaya flesh with Fuller’s earth or clay so the clay can absorb the excess oil of your skin. Better yet, remove the excess oil of your skin first before applying the papaya mash for better effectiveness. Dry Skin If your skin is too dry, you can mix the papaya pulp with either aloe vera or honey to have an additional moisturizing and hydrating effect. Normal Skin Apply the mashed papaya directly to your skin. If you have already tried using papaya for your skin and your desired effects are still not visible after a week, you should consult your dermatologist. Learn more amazing skin benefits of papaya to general health at this website: http://www.bodyplush.com/ more-than-a-beauty-remedy-different-papaya-health-benefits/ Remember, eat more papaya! Editor’s Notes: How many fruits and vegetables are you consuming each day? In Japan, it’s not uncommon for the people to consume 17 servings of fruits and veggies per day. That’s a whole lot of benefits for health that many people don’t get. In the U.S., there’s a growing trend for people to do the same thing. Over a million people are now getting their 17 servings of fruits and vegetables without a lot of time in the kitchen. Find out how. Call Dr. Donna at 916-6498323. Let your health blossom! H&F

We see it everywhere: anger and disillusionment! What’s going on with this country?

Viewpoint Inspired

When The League of Heroes Inspired (“The League”) visits children who’ve lost their homes, limbs, use of their muscles, their families, or their self-esteem or spirit, WE end up uplifted by their ability to KNOW there’s something bigger than our pains, our suffering! The kids don’t want us to leave, and we don’t want to leave! Giving can be amazingly INSPIRING!!

My wife and I thrive on being as healthy as we can. We eat really healthy, mostly organic though we’ve heard that label isn’t reliable. One of us always picks up your magazine at the gym because we’re there all the time. Mitch, we decided to write you because the national elections talk about people being angry with “the establishment”, and we hear our vote “doesn’t count”. We can’t trust our neighbors; they could be terrorists. One of the reasons we read your column is you’re so freakin’ positive. We even checked out your website, which is very cool. What’s with your League of Heroes Inspired, man? Are you hearing all of this downer talk and do you just ignore it. How do you do the amazing stuff you do for kids with all of this negative stuff around us? We’re really hoping you’ll answer. Thanks. Fighting The “Good Fight” Rocklin, CA Hey Good Fighters, …And the Wisdom To Know The Difference The Serenity Prayer Life is naught but lessons to be learned. What we feel is “Good” or “Bad” and these are responses to our limited human experience. If we let go of want, we cease suffering, accept life as lessons for growth and enlightenment, and more smoothly navigate the “Good” and the “Bad”! Meanwhile, to be human is to feel… Grief… Ecstasy... Loss... Victory... Fear... Strength... Inspiration! Perhaps the greatest of life’s paradoxes is this dichotomy: Life is all lessons, and we subjectively identify life elements as positive or negative. Yet, to be human is to be vulnerable, to feel good, bad, and all of those things which are PART of the Lessons, and which can IMPEDE the learning. The League of Heroes Inspired (“The League”), like you, is committed to what you call “The Good Fight”. It’s about standing for others’ well-being, health and self-esteem. Cultural and worldwide

drama be damned! LOL Intelligent, sensitive, aware people see the pain in this world, and hear the images. “Reality” is somewhere between the paradigm of our human sensations, and that ethereal “Meaning Of Life”. And THAT’S where CHOICE comes in! For many it’s very difficult to accept that we have WAY more choice than we believe we do. Period. Years ago, the Embassy Suites Hotel in Sacramento, Bistro33 in Davis, and Star Dental in Roseville each chose to give of their time and energy to help The League collect gifts for traumatized children during the holidays. And each continues to CHOOSE each year to help those kids! There are Single Moms, Cancer Survivors, Struggling Students and Artists, Overwhelmed Professionals and more… all choosing to make a difference by volunteering with The League. There’s not a one of them that hasn’t felt severe pain, loss and fear, my friend. Every one of them has wondered about life and its challenges. And every one of them has made a powerful choice “to do something positive”, or “to be positive” because life simply is more palatable and enjoyable when we engage in positive! * Guess What? There’s No Such Thing As A Bad Day When You Volunteer! …This is a FACT like 99.5% of the time!

Relationships

Dear Mitch,

The League now has a beautiful website (www.LeagueOfHeroesInspired) because 5 Star Multimedia CHOSE to see “how powerfully you impact those children”. They found out about us partially because Leticia Ordaz at KCRA3 CHOSE to have The League on a few times so we could tell Sacramento people about our story! And Leticia knows about The League because she CHOSE to help at an event years ago, and later CHOSE to open up and listen to what The League of Heroes Inspired is about! People like The Sacramento Kings, and Sacramento Playwright and Director Elise M. Hodge have chosen to associate with The League. They, like all of our Associates and Volunteers, choose Positive. My friend, keep choosing to SEE. To feel. To be aware. I see way too many Americans who don’t realize they’re “part of the problem” because they choose to ignore the fact that they CAN be a positive difference! We ALL have SOMETHING to give, and THAT makes Life VERY worth living! Namaste’ — Mitch H&F

An Interview with Dermatologist, Dr. Madalene Heng on Clinical Research and Success with Curcumin Gel

I

f you have psoriasis or eczema, there’s someone you should know and/or meet: Madalene Heng, M.D. She has made a very significant discovery in medical science – what happens in the skin of those who have skin problems and also what to do about it. With over 25 years as a full professor and currently clinical professor in private practice as a dermatologist, plus the author of over 80 peerreviewed scientific papers, Dr. Heng goes far beyond the scope of treating dermatological conditions. To her, stubborn rashes and skin issues are a piece of cake to treat, but it wasn’t always like this. The Long Road to Discovering Help for Patients At the Veterans Administration Medical Center as Chief of Dermatology, she wasn’t happy about the fact that doctors had no cure for psoriasis. “It was actually serendipity that got me started on the path of finding that cure. I had an electron microscopy background and was observing the skin cells of psoriasis patients one day…,” Dr. Heng said. “I noticed that there were very few glycogen granules in psoriasis patients but plenty of them in those who had eczema. I asked myself, ‘What is the enzyme that breaks down glycogen granules?’ and our team at the center was the first to develop an assay in 1994 to find out more.”

By Dr. Donna, Editor to subside after injury. The team developed an assay to measure the amount of organic phosphates to check phosphorylation in skin samples. Skin Problems All Boil Down to the PhK Enzyme “We found that even those who had healed from psoriasis still had high levels of PhK. In 2000, we discovered that if drug treatment can reduce or suppress PhK activity, then there was an improvement, and sometimes resolution, of the psoriasis,” she said. These anti-PhK drugs are called phosphorylase kinase (PhK) inhibitors. In 2004, she began another research study that would take 7 years, this time with 647 patients. That’s when she discovered that if PK inhibitor drugs were used together with measures to avoid increasing PhK activity (avoid contact allergens, lactose in the diet and treatment of infections), 72% of the patients had clear skin within 4 months, and 60% of them never had another episode of the psoriasis during the 1-7 years study follow up. During that time, Dr. Heng discovered cutting-edge facts about skin care that no one else had ever reported: 1. The gene for switching off PhK activity is present at birth but nothing happens to the psoriatic patient until the skin is injured and the injured skin is infected. 2. PhK is activated within 5 mins after injury.

They discovered that an enzyme called phosphorylase kinase, or PhK for short, appears to be extremely important in the cause of psoriasis. The enzyme PhK functions in many biochemical processes in the body through reactions called phosphorylation.

3. PhK activity results in activating the transcription activator, NFkB 30 minutes later.

In the skin, phosphorylation reactions are involved with tissue repair, but after repair is complete, the levels must subside, otherwise the skin tissue continues to stay inflamed with excessive scaling due to rapid skin turnover. In psoriasis, the enzyme levels show failure

5 Things That You’d Never Suspect Cause Contact Dermatitis Psoriasis can be precipitated by physical injury, but far more frequently by contact with allergens (contact dermatitis). Common allergens include the following:

4. NFKB then turns on over 200 genes that cause inflammation, proliferation, and the production of scar tissue.

Cover story

1) black/dark brown hair dyes or clothing containing a dye called paraphenylene diamine 2) elastic or stretch clothing (it’s not actually the elastic but the over 20 or so chemicals used to prevent the elastic from oxidizing that makes this a contact allergen 3) neoprene glue in shoes 4) nickel filings from keys, coins and jewelry 5) trivalent chromates found in tanned leather products.” Once the barrier is breached, these contact allergens are picked up by the Langerhans cells, which process the allergens, and then shuttle them to the regional lymph nodes. This results in generation of activated T cells, which eventually home to sites of contact dermatitis. The areas of dermatitis are frequently infected by Staphylococcus aureus or MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), resulting in worsening disease. These bacteria produce chemicals that activate immune cells to secrete cytokines such as TNF-alpha, which result in high levels of PhK activity. The high levels of PhK activity precipitate psoriasis because the psoriatic patient can’t switch off the PhK enzyme. A Natural, Herbal-Based Product Does All the Healing But that’s when the natural remedy called curcumin comes to the rescue. Curcumin successfully turns off the PhK enzyme as easily as you flip a light switch off. Dr. Heng created a way to make curcumin gel so it would

penetrate the damaged skin cells and turn off the enzyme. Once the enzyme is turned off, the skin begins to heal. However, simply applying raw curcumin to the skin yourself won’t work because the active ingredient can’t get in through the skin. It’s too insoluble to cross the skin barrier. In the studies, Dr. Heng used the brand PsoriaGold curcumin gel. She has developed protocols for Acne, Rosacea, Psoriasis, Burns, and Photodamage using curcumin gel, and even very sensitive skin. “The protocols are a little different depending on what’s going on. For example, in itching, the curcumin gel stops the itching within 1 minute no matter what the cause of the itching is.“ “In scarring, the PhK enzyme is activated and the NFkB levels are high. This causes a cascade of reactions where different types of cells become active. Within a week, fibroblasts show up and by 2 weeks, myofibroblasts make their appearance. These myofibroblasts contain actin fibers resembling those found in smooth muscle cells. These actin fibers cause the scar to contract,

and produce hypertrophic scars. The Psoria-Gold blocks the PhK and NFkB so that the myofibroblasts never show up. This is why many surgeons are using Psoria-Gold for their patients – their surgeries then become “scar-less.” According to Dr. Heng, even burns don’t have to ever leave a scar. In her research, she has seen that if Psoria-Gold is used to treat the area three times an hour, even blistering won’t occur, as long as it’s applied right away. Try The Psoria-Gold for Your Skin Problems Dr. Heng still sees patients that travel from all parts of the globe to see her at her clinic in Camarillo. Because Psoria-Gold is considered a skin cosmetic, it cannot be obtained from pharmacies. You must either purchase online or ask your doctor to get it for you. She often works with doctors to explain her successful protocols. “My goal for anyone with skin disorders is always to address the bottom line. Can they get well? Can we get them off unnecessary medications? And can they stay well? Often the answer is yes.” For more information about Psoria-Gold curcumin gel, please visit www.psoria-gold.com. Why continue struggling for 10 more years with skin disorders? Check out the before and after pictures of real live patients. f you’re looking for a book on herbs that includes how to plant identification, how to harvest them, and how to take them medicinally, The Boreal Herbal is one of the best references you could ever own.

find in it is a lot of scientific mumbojumbo. That’s because there are two types of herb books – ones that connect to the heart of the land, the soul

Besides already winning six international awards for its presentation and content, the book is full of indigenous wisdom from the Yukon. In the Yukon, the harvesting of wild plants still remains an integral part of the culture of many first nations. This type of wisdom is difficult to come by these days, as many books on herbs simply list the herbs and what they’re good for along with the dosage. They leave much to be desired and are in some ways, an example of how modern medicine has robbed us of the healing process. The Boreal Herbalis one of the most complete books I’ve seen on herbs, and provides many different facets of the herbs, including stories about them, their essence, recipes to use them as food. There’s even a section on how to use the herbs to making tinctures, salves and other products for the purpose of making them available to the residents of your community and starting up a nontimber forest products business. Thus, this book is a perfect replication of what an herb truly offers your body – health on several different levels. But what you won’t 20 CELEBRATING

and the herbs and others that only connect to the intellect. The Boreal Herbal is the first type, connecting to your roots as a human. And because

any safety precautions are included in the herbal descriptions, you truly have everything you need within its 440 pages. In today’s time, we need wild foods – and medicinal plants offer us the chance to provide the plant information that is essential to our health and well-being, to activate and maintain health. Many have taken up the hobby of foraging, but those who are just starting need guidance. This book will be a main source of your guidance. Don’t worry about the book’s specificity of the plants to the Yukon; over half of them are found in many other places in the U.S. and will be directly relevant to you. The book is packed with full-color herbal photos in high resolution that are breathtaking and make you reconsider your travel plans, sneaking in a trip to the Yukon every season of the year. On your trips, you may even head out to meet Beverley Gray in person at her Aroma Borealis Herb Shop in Whitehorse, Yukon, take a medicinal herb walk during harvesting, or attend classes she gives. The Boreal Herbal is highly recommended for all those who want to expand their herbal book library, those starting their learning about herbs, preppers, and even those who are looking for new business ventures. Can Receding Gums and Periodontal Disease Really Be Improved Naturally? By Dr. Donna, Editor

E

ight-year-old Sonny’s bad report from the dentist stunned his mother, Katie. It would cost $3000 to fix the 12 cavities in his teeth. Like a lot of other moms, funds of this amount were nowhere to be found. She had to do something else and gave me a call. “How can I support the teeth nutritionally? Is it possible for small cavities to reverse themselves?” she asked. It actually is possible to reverse small cavities – and the body does it all the time. And when you look closely at the field of nutrition, you’ll find thousands of research studies on PubMed on the topic of how nutrients are related to the synthesis of bone, teeth, and enamel. Each of these nutrients plays a role in this synthesis. Thus, it’s the next level of thinking to believe that these nutrients can then play a role in the reversal of dental issues. And this isn’t all just hearsay; many alternative health practitioners are using nutrition to impact not just teeth but also bones and other skeletal disorders.

But there is a warning. The method of rebuilding your teeth takes time and you need patience. What About the Nerve Root? Can It Heal? Sandy, a woman in her 50s, had an area in her gum that had worn down significantly and hurt at the level of the nerve root. She couldn’t afford dental care and decided to try something natural. She used the same principles and her gums regenerated and the nerve root started to heal. The ‘hole’ exposing the nerve root drastically reduced itself and the tooth is only occasionally sensitive after several months. She is continuing the process to get her full recovery.

Diet Connected to Health of the Teeth Back in the 1920s Dr. Westin A. Price, a dentist who did research on the diet of many different cultures in the 1920s and 1930s, found a definite connection of diet to the appearance of dental caries, tooth alignment, and the need for tooth extractions and repairs. His work is available in the book called, Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, complete with photos. You’ll see what happens when sugar and processed foods are brought into the diet in the photos. For example, the entire facial structure changes with the next generation. Sonny Made Huge Progress With His Cavities Sonny made four major changes: in oral hygiene, diet, chewing habits, and what was used on the teeth to start the process of reversal of the cavities. He was diligent about these changes, although not perfect. A few months later, his visit to the dentist proved his hard work paid off. All but the largest cavity had self-healed. The bill was less than a few hundred dollars.

Mary was facing gum transplants, another expensive procedure. Her gums were that bad. She was faced with her next dental appointment within a week and began the natural strategies to rebuild them. Her dentist’s comment was this: “Wow, what have you done to your gums? They are remarkably better!” Plaque and Whitening May Be Improved Naturally Sally started using the same regeneration method and overnight, her plaque became soft and she was able to remove it. Her friend did the same thing, and noticed how clean her teeth felt – and how they appeared whiter as well. She then started the kids on the protocol and took pictures of their teeth. They whitened remarkably within a week and the kids were excited about the discovery. These are only five examples but they show that it is possible. More than that, it is probable that you can make a huge difference in your own oral health. It doesn’t mean you don’t need a dentist. We’ll always need dentists and they are valuable. However, you can do a lot more for your oral health than what was originally thought. It all starts with nutrition. Want more info? Antibiotic Resistant Study Found Super Bug in Our Food

STAY CLEAN & REFRESHED

By Jim M. White

D

r. Price is just one of many scientists that suspect that more than 21 million pounds of antibiotics fed to healthy animals on farms, are causing the problems we are seeing. These current methods, are teaching bacteria to outsmart antibiotics, creating drugresistant strains like Staph. Dr. Price states, “Thousands of animals that are tightly packed into unhygienic quarters, given regular doses of antibiotics is a perfect scenario for antibiotic resistance type of bacteria to grow.” Dr Price’s team tested 136 meat and poultry samples from grocery stores nationwide. They found that an amazingly high number of 47% were contaminated with Staph. Even more troubling was that more than half – 52% – had antibiotic resistance to at least 3 classes of antibiotics. These particular antibiotics were routinely used to treat skin, blood and respiratory infections in humans. The Biggest Part Discovered in This Study The big finding of this study was that antibiotic resistance occurs to Staph, and it’s actually multi-drug resistant. Staph is a routine contaminant of our food supply. Even though Staph may be killed by cooking at the proper temperature, it still poses a potential risk of spreading antibioticresistant strains. If you are putting the same uncooked meat on 1 particular surface and don’t clean it up, there is trouble ahead. For example, let’s say it’s time to make your baby’s bottle. By putting the bottle on that same surface, you run the risk of contaminating the bottle. If this same bottle is fed to the baby, now

you could have a very sick infant. The infant might end up in the emergency room while you wait for help for an infection of this deadly, antibiotic-resistant bacteria. One recent study found that more than 59% of all skin and tissue Staph infections were antibiotic- resistant. To understand why the number keeps rising, you need to look no further than the farm, where our food supply is contaminated with resistant bacteria. This problem is not getting any better anytime soon. The only thing someone can do to prevent antibiotic resistance when buying meat is to make sure NO ANTIBIOTICS were ever given to the animals. Buying USDA ORGANIC is helpful and if the label says, “NO ANTIBIOTICS EVER.” These are just a few of the ways to make sure your meat has a lower chance of being infected, with a potentially deadly super bug. We all need to do our part in helping to protect ourselves from an encounter of something to this nature. Nature always has its way of being on top, no matter what it is. The antibiotic resistance problem started by anything but nature. Now only a natural way is needed to help correct the problem. Check out www. destroydiseases.com Editor’s Note: Want to learn how to treat your own infections at home with natural remedies? It’s Time to Get Your Old Bikes Tuned Up – or Get a New Used Bike By Dr. Donna At his shop, located at 2365 Sutterville Bypass in Sacramento, you’ll find tons of restored bikes, bike relics from the past including a 100-year-old tricycle, Vintage cruisers, good riding bikes, oldschool BMX, new bikes (GT, Schwinn, Reid, City Bicycle Company, and Charge Bicycles), good riding bikes of all kinds as well as a very old picture of Einstein on a bike.

S

ince the age of 3,Jeff Dzurinko was riding a bike and by the age of 11, he was taking neighbors malfunctioning bikes apart in his backyard. Twelve years ago, Jeff started working at a top Sacramento bike store as a sales clerk and was promoted up through the rank to assistant manager. In 2010, he pursued a career as a firefighter but found it difficult to find a job in the field, probably due to the cuts in the Fire and EMT budgets in California. He went back to his first love – bikes and everything about them. He worked in other Sacramento bike shops as a technician and in management. Premiere Sacramento Bike Shop Right in Your Back Yard Fast forward his life now to the present when Jeff opened up his own bike store in Sacramento called Sutterville Bicycle Company. You’ll find him at the shop six days a week and also on his Facebook page. (www.SuttervilleBicycle.com)

Now Jeff’s goal is to provide one of the best bike repair shops in Sacramento plus the best selection of quality used bikes and new bikes. “You never forget how to ride a bicycle,” Jeff told us. “Even if you have a 10-year-old bike in your garage, the chances are you can bring it back to life. A Pro-Tune on a geared bike is $60. We really love to fix bikes at our shop.” Since new bikes can cost anywhere from $300 to $400 up to $3000 on the average, it makes a lot of sense to renovate an old bike if your budget is a little strapped. Jeff takes your old used bikes – or any project bikes in the shop – and gets them to the point where you can say, “My bike is dialed in.” You could even work with Jeff and have him update your bike and/or customize it for your style of riding. “There’s been a lot of updated seat technology so the old seat on your bike could easily be updated to fit you better,” he said. “Comfort saddles are cush with pressure relief cutouts and gel that can give you the ride of your life. Even modern

streamlined saddles can be lighter weight and more comfortable.” But it’s not just seat technology that you can update your bike with. Why not use some of the latest tire technology? “We carry tires ranging from $15 to $80 per tire and we also carry just about every tube size. Even some of the harder to find tubes are here. Helmets too have improved. They have a more precise fit, are lightweight, have larger ventilation holes, and are made of high-tech materials. We have children’s and adult helmets in stock.” According to Jeff, it’s important to get a correct fit for the frame size of your bike. If you go into the bike shop, he’ll help you with this. He might even teach you how to change a flat if you ask.

Sutterville Bike Shop is Your Bike Servicing Repair Headquarters When it comes to bike repairs, quality used bikes, and quality new bikes, think Sutterville Bicycle Company. The type of repairs you can have done are: • Pro Tune Up - $60 • Wheel trueing - $15 • A wheel build - $40 • Bearing overhaul - $20 • Most tubes - $5 • Pumping up tires – Always free! Sutterville Bicycle Company is open from 11 to 7 pm Tuesday through Saturday and from 12 to 6 pm on Sunday. Give them a call at 916-7377537 for all your bike needs and give Melvin, Jeff’s small mascot dog a pet for us at Health & Fitness Magazine. H&F

Sledding Accidents Put Tons Of Kids In The ER Every Year

• Children ages 4 and younger were more likely to be involved in accidents with vehicles. • One third of all injuries were caused by kids pulled by motorized vehicles. • The use of sleds that can rotate, such as disks and snow tubes, should be discouraged. The lack of control contributes to more injuries. • Children should be supervised by parents when sledding at all times. The data contained in this article is from the Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the US Census Bureau.

S

ledding is a popular winter recreation and only enjoyed for a portion of the year. Still, it lands about 20,000 kids in the emergency room each and every year, as new research shows.

• 42.5% of injuries involved children ages 10 to 14. • 59.8% of all the injuries were sustained by boys. • 4.1% of all emergency room visits required hospitalization.

When researchers analyzed data over a 10-year period, they found well over 200,000 injuries bad enough for a trip to the ER in that period of time among children under the age of 19.

Children were more likely to sustain head injuries and diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury and hospitalized if these accidents occurred on a street. The two main factors that contribute to sledding-related injuries are the environment and the locale. Sledding areas should be clear of trees and other obstacles. There should be sufficient run-out areas away from any streets to avoid collisions with motor vehicles.

The main findings of this study are as follows: • 26% of the injuries were fractures. • 25% of the injuries were cuts and bruises. • 51% of the injuries happened during a collision. • 34% of the injuries involved a blow to the head. • 52% of the injuries were at a place of sports or recreation. • 31% of injuries happened on private property.

all-terrain vehicles, snowmobiles, cars, trucks, tractors, motorcycles, dirt bikes, and lawn mowers. Further research is needed to determine whether helmets would reduce the injury rates or the seriousness of the injuries. They also examined the types of sledding vehicles involved in injuries, from sleds and snow tubes to toboggans and snow disks. Some other finding that were discovered are:

Sledding Injuries Worse Than What Most People Think Sledding has proven to be a bigger problem than originally thought. Given the chances for serious injury, children should never ride a sled that is being pulled by a motorized vehicle of any type, including

hat Good Housekeeping magazine seal helped Moms know a quality standard was being set and maintained. It was just like the Underwriters Lab, that little UL tab on your electrical devices. Having a certified standard for quality is important and it’s one of the reasons I participate in the United World Taekwondo Association (UWTA) and adhere to United States Association of Taekwondo (USAT) standards in training and testing. Another important driver of quality standards is the United States Olympic Committee,

in how students are managed, what training involves and how those skills are tested for promotion. While I have been in the martial arts business teaching in Sacramento since 1975, I have also been working daily to help build credibility for Taekwondo worldwide. From white belt to black, finding some way to provide a more level field for training and business practices has been sorely needed since my first step on the mat. In past decades each instructor had their

or the ‘way we’ve always done it’, that doesn’t make it right or the best way for that student! Change is always hard but growing a more united group does benefit everyone, especially those with real interest in world competition. That’s why I helped create UWTA in 1993 and bring back consistent fundamentals, common training practices, successful business models and opportunity to compete on the world stage. That belief has helped Grandmaster Lee and I grow a more inclusive group with an eye to listening to members while promoting shared training, testing and competitive methods. Sometimes change is hard, but good for all, and sometimes unworkable. That’s why I will at times remove my name and affiliation from a school as their practices have strayed from shared practices and goals. At present UWTA has schools worldwide, including two at the North Pole in Alaska! If you walked into a UWTA school there or in Montevideo, Uruguay you would recognize the training, testing and promotions

As Taekwondo has become the world’s most taught martial art, gained prominence in worldwide tourneys and stature as an Olympic event those consistent ways to find excellence in martial arts do make a difference. By John Buchanan

R

ecently one of the guys at work was complaining about what he perceived to be a prevalent ignorance of the rules governing the use of the American River Parkway. Yup, there are rules that are expected to be obeyed and mores that are just expected. What are the differences? Well, there is no ambiguity about the rules, but etiquette is more nebulous. A general agreement that only works when most of us understand what it is exactly what it is we are agreeing upon. What? Exactly! For me, when in doubt, smile, apologize and ride on. But the rules? What about those stinkin’ rules? Well, despite my shop mate’s indignant dismay regarding other rule breakers on the bike trail, he always becomes strangely silent when I inquire as to how fast he rides the trail himself. Generally, he ends the conversation. But for the rest of us sinister rule breakers, a refresher of those rules cannot be anything but beneficial. And thanks to the Sacramento County Regional Park website, those rules I will now make available to all. The site is also an excellent resource for anyone wishing to utilize the 15,000 acres of park available in Sacramento County. But allow me to summarize those rules, and of course salt them with my own opinions and observations.

4. Anyone riding a bicycle on the parkway must pull off the pavement when stopped. I think this should be doubly important for parents with trailers and/or young children on bikes.

Sports & fitness

Rules on the American River Parkway‌Who Knew?

5. Stay in your lane. It seems like this would be a no brainer, but I know personally how the mind can wander, and how readily a bike wanders with it. Stay focused and keep the head phones off. Another no-no. 6. Yes, the speed limit really is 15 miles per hour. 7. Like our brethren the joggers and walkers, ride single file if in groups of two or more. 8. No, you cannot ride on the equestrian trails or vice versa. No off-road riding. 9. I consider it madness to ride in the dark without lights, but thankfully it happens to also be illegal on the bike trail. For more information, see www.regionalparks.saccounty.net H&F

1. It should be noted that those walking and/or jogging the trail should try, whenever possible, to use the dirt shoulder. It will minimize accidental contact with any errant cyclists. If in a group of two or more, the single file principle should be practiced. Having jogged some of the trail myself, I find the hard pack nature of the shoulder easy on my body. The shoulder provides a sense of security that will be appreciated. 2. Dogs are allowed on the trail, but are not allowed to be unleashed at any time. They must also be on a leash of no more than six feet, probably not a bad idea. For the cyclist the list is a little bit longer: 3. Helmets are mandatory for children under 18 years of age. Parents may want to give grave and careful consideration using the bike trail as an area to teach their children the fine art of cycling. The bike trail is heavily trafficked and care should be taken when accompanying children. January/February

Dog Wellness: Avoid Lead Poisoning in Dogs By Michel Jayne Lead toxicity or lead poisoning is medically known as plumbism, and refers to poisoning due to ingestion or inhalation of products containing lead. When lead-based paint is on the walls is disturbed, causing dust and chips of paint to fall to the ground, this is where the problem starts. Dogs, especially puppies, will ingest paint pieces. Dust from moving and scraping the paint settles in the pet’s fur and between his toes and is inhaled through his nose. Home renovation or new paint jobs are more common causes of lead poisoning in dogs. Paint produced prior to 1977 contained high levels of lead. Some companies today are still using this paint on children and pet products. Although the Consumer Product Safety Commission checks the safety of all toys for humans and enforces a federal standard for lead in paint for children’s toys, there is no organization that regularly tests animal toys nor is there a standard for lead in pet toys. Pet owners need to be vigilant in ensuring their pets are out of harm’s way when renovating their home. However, it isn’t just paint that can cause lead poisoning in dogs or other pets. Lead poisoning or lead toxicity can come from the following: 1. Paint, or the disturbance of paint 2. Lead weights 3. Lead pellets 4. Household items such as drapery weights, linoleum, rug padding, and foil from the tops of wine bottles 5. Automotive parts such as batteries, wheel weights, leaded gasoline and discarded oil from cars using leaded gasoline 6. Construction materials such as solder, putty and caulking 7. Plumbing and roofing materials

Puppies are more likely to ingest materials containing lead because of their chewing, playful nature and their curiosity. Dogs are more likely than cats to eat lead-containing objects. Younger animals are more overwhelmed with smaller lead dosages than older ones. Lead also crosses the placenta and is excreted in the mother’s milk. Lead poisoning in dogs can cause vomiting and diarrhea. It can cause anemia and seizures, and suppress the immune system. Basically if your dog or pet has lead poisoning, he is very sick and requires immediate urgent medical attention. Signs and Symptoms * Loss of appetite * Abdominal pain * Vomiting * Diarrhea * Anxiety * Aggressive behavior * Muscle tremors * Uncoordination * Weakness * Seizures * Blindness * Deafness * Behavior changes * Mental “dullness” (not alert) * Increased thirst and urinations * Shortness of breath * Intolerance for exercise If you notice any of the above symptoms in your pet, contact your vet immediately. To properly diagnose your dog, diagnostic tests include a complete blood count, serum biochemistry tests to check the liver, and kidney function tests will help to assess the extent of systemic injury from the lead. A blood lead concentration test determine amount of lead in your

dog’s body. Pumping of the stomach and enemas are performed to remove any remaining lead if poisoning has been recent. Surgery may be needed for removal of any object in the stomach. Fluids are administered via IV to correct dehydration and facilitate urinary excretion of lead. Diazepam, Phenobarbital or Pentobarbital are administered to control seizures. As you can see, it’s a very involved, sad, uncomfortable, stressful, and costly vet visit. Then there’s a recovery time and medications plus follow up visits. Home Care Pet natural health care is extremely common and used by pet owners around the world with very successful results, particularly when it comes to common pet illnesses. However, in this case, there is no natural or home care for lead poisoning in dogs. Seek veterinary care promptly if you suspect your dog has ingested lead-containing materials or shows any of the above signs. Once you take your pet home from the vet, it is vital that you administer medications exactly as directed by your vet and monitor your pet daily. Note down any symptoms that worsen or any new symptoms you notice. Immediately discuss these changes with your vet. Prevention Dog wellness means dog owner awareness. A huge part of preventing lead poisoning in dogs is awareness. Be aware of items

or chemicals around your home and yard that contain lead and make sure they are out of your dogs reach. Removing all sources of lead from home and garden is the best prevention. Keep your dog away from any renovation occurring in your home, and away from discarded materials. Keep your dog away from your garage if you are storing leadcontaining materials there. Make sure dog toys and bowls are leadfree. Never underestimate your dog’s curiosity. Don’t take any chances and keep all toxic materials away from your dog’s reach at all times. Michel’s family and pets live on the wellness side of life. She carries out her mother’s tradition of people and pet wellness including natural home remedies whenever possible, home-cooked healthy meals, and an all around health lifestyle. People and pet wellness is life’s passion for Michel, who often heals her pets without a vet using pet natural health care. Metal Toxicity in Parrots From Their Cages By Konstantin Perevoztchikov many different organs causing non-specific signs of illness.

from oxidation and make it look better). This is extremely toxic for parrots as described above.

Paint used on your bird’s cage is the main concern. Powder coating is much stronger than regularly applied paint because it easily flakes and can be ingested. It may also cause the cage to rust.

Then there’s zinc galvanized wire or mesh in outdoor aviaries. Don’t treat outdoor aviaries with vinegar to guard your parrot against zinc poisoning. This will etch the upper very accessible oxidized zinc layer (dull whitish coat - zinc rust) and zinc coating underneath the oxidized layer. The vinegar will thin it enough to make the underlying metal prone to oxidation and rusting, which is also not good. This procedure may be sufficient to protect small birds from zinc poisoning but it seems as the best bet to avoid zinc around parrots altogether. Zinc may also be found in UV protection in plastics, sun protective creams and lotions, fire retardants, wood preservatives and agricultural fungicides.

Ingesting any paint or any kind of metal is never a good thing. It doesn’t matter how safe it is, and there are no standards for safe levels of toxic metals established for birds.

I

t’s hard to believe that the very cage your parrot is in could be causing toxicity to the bird. But below is a list of some common and not so common metals and their alloys that can be found in cage materials such as in the wires, frame, hardware (screws, padlocks, hinges), parrot toys plus common things around your house. Some of them, if ingested, may have adverse affect on your parrot’s health. All birds are very sensitive to toxins. They have fast metabolism, delicate skin and respiratory system, small size, and a digestive system with gizzard (pH 2.0, and 42C) that allows some non-food items to sit there for a prolonged time. This ends up releasing toxins or causing obstruction, impaction, bleeding and death. Natural curiosity and cleverness pushes parrots to reach for, chew and taste any usual and unusual objects. The strength of their beaks put parrots even at greater risk of being exposed to toxins not only when ingested, but through skin contact or when inhaled. Toxins like heavy metals are deposited in brain, bones, feathers and in muscle tissue, and may damage

Lead and zinc are highly poisonous for parrots. The birds are exposed via paint or alloys in cage wires containing metals. The birds use their beaks to climb as well. If your cage contains these metals, your parrot can end up with heavy metal poisoning. Also, your family could be exposed to lead in dust from your parrot’s activity around the cage. The most common signs of lead poisoning in birds besides subdued behavior and shutting down is seizures and falling from the perch. Zinc toxicity causes falls from the perch. If you have any suspicion, contact your avian vet immediately. The larger the parrot, the bigger the danger. The large birds scratch, shave and chew up pieces of softer metals or paint. Lead may be used in paint primers, soldering metal, soldered joints in cage (distinguished from welded joints), foil on wine bottles, champagne wire, fishing weights, curtain weights, rifle bullets/pellets, stained glass, in PVC and caulk.

Play it safe by checking all metals in your birdcage and bird’s toys regularly for chipping, peeling, rust and oxidation. Industry standards for lead refer for the safe standards established by federal government that currently allow less then 600 ppm (parts per million parts or 0.06 % by weight) of lead in household paint. Check with manufacturers regarding Zinc, as there are no federal regulations for its content in paint. Zinc is an essential trace element, playing an important role in enzymatic activity. However, if it’s ingested in large amounts from non-food items, it may lead to high accumulation and toxicity. Zinc is not only used in paint but also may be used in plating - galvanization of cage wires, hardware and some metal parts of bird’s toys (galvanization is term used only for zinc coatings to protect cage metal or hardware January/February
