Acima do homem morto, vemos uma cena de tourada. Na parede atrás do violonista, encontra-se o quadro Une dame en costume espagnol, pintado por Goya (23). L.C.: Como v ocê define as filiações nesses casos? H.B.V.: Com ironia e respeito, eu tento mostrar a paternidade de Velázquez em relação a Goya, de Velázquez e Goya em relação a Manet, Manet para Monet e, para não parar no meio do caminho, de uma certa maneira eu mesmo me situo na sequência dessa filiação pois, pintando este quadro, eu assumo fazer parte dessa família.

Se llama así a los jóvenes aspirantes al título de matador de toros que, para alcanzarlo, han de recibir la alternativa de un matador confirmado antes de poder lidiar toros oficialmente. Encima de él se aprecia una escena de tauromaquia. En la pared, detrás del guitarrista, se halla el lienzo “Une dame en costume espagnol” que pintó Goya (23). L.C.: ¿Cómo defines las filiaciones en tal caso? H.B.V.: Con ironía y respeto, procuro poner de relieve la paternidad de Velázquez respecto a Goya, de Velázquez y Goya para Manet, de Manet para Monet, y para no quedarse a mitad de camino, en cierto modo me sitúo también en la continuidad de esta filiación, puesto que reconozco pertenecer a esta familia al hacer este cuadro. LC. También hay la violencia representada en las transferencias de tinta.

L.C. : Comment définis-tu donc les filiations dans ces cas-là ? H.B.V. : Avec ironie et respect, j’essaie de montrer la paternité de Vélàzquez vis-à-vis de Goya, de Vélàzquez et Goya pour Manet, de Manet pour Monet, et pour ne pas m’arrêter en si bon chemin, d’une certaine manière, je me situe moi-même dans la suite de cette filiation car je reconnais en faisant ce tableau mon appartenance à cette famille. L.C. : Il y a aussi la violence représentée dans les transferts d’encre. H.B.V. : Oui, la violence passée

L.C.: H ow would y ou define the affiliations in this instance? H.B.V.: With irony and respect. I try to reveal the paternity of Velazquez to Goya, of Velazquez and Goya to Manet, of Manet to Monet, and, beyond that, I include myself in this lineage insofar as this painting affirms my own affiliation with this family. L.C.: There’s also violence represented in the ink transfers. H.B.V.: Yes, past violence as well as contemporary violence. In the upper part of the painting that Goya is in the process of touching up, there’s an ink transfer of four etchings, one from the Caprichos, and three others taken from the Disasters of War. You can also find newspaper clippings mentioning “Members of the Ku Klux Klan condemned”, “Increasing insecurity in Venezuela”, “The Red Mosque occupied today [inPakistan]”, “Al-Qaida suicide bombing”…
