HBAWS

shared what trades are needed to build a home and information about wages. The students also heard about what the HBA does by telling them about our events and education program.

Did you know that the average of age of most construction trades is now 50 years old. Who is going to be trained and ready for the future? The recent Construction Career Days sponsored by the Chambers Construction Industry Council was held at the Fair Grounds for three days in mid April. High school students from all over NWNC attended to see, hear and experience hands on activities.

The HBAWS partnered with Habitat for Humanity with a shared booth. Students actually help make jack studs to be used in the construction of future Habitat homes. As they nailed the 2x4’s they were asked if they knew what a jack stud was. The custom jig Habitat was using made the task easy and fun for the students. Some also took time to nail vinyl siding on a section of wall. Volunteers and staff from HBAWS

The Inspections Department helped with a construction competition for FTCC students enrolled in the construction trades. DOT was there with every big piece of equipment you can think of. One graduating senior from A&T stopped in and he shared how the CCD helped him pursue classes in the construction trade and now looking forward to working in the same field. The HBAWS Voc Ed program is a winner for everyone including: HBAWS; Habitat; FTCC; Career Center and our industry as a whole. If you would like to get involved please contact Voc Ed Chair Justin Draughn, Jerry Herman or others on the committee.

A big Thanks to the following people that worked the booth: Rick Bush, Steve McSwain, Jerry Herman, Beverly Hayes, Selina Everhart, Byran Daniel, Rick Tozier, Ron Ricci and Keith Rogers.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Steve Hurst – Steve E. Hurst Construction

Spring is Season for Growth Spring is in the air and we as an association have lots to be grateful for. First, we are still here! Joking aside- the strong will survive and I am happy that you are still an active member of our association. We will be celebrating in May with several great events that really markets who we are as an association both externally and internally. yy The Spring Parade of Homes will be held on April 30, May 1, 7 & 8. We have 29 homes and 2 developments that will be featured. yy Don’t miss going by the Spring Association Home that PCI Builders will be showcasing in Kernersville. This home is our first NAHB Green Certified Association Home.

yy Our SPH Breakfast Extravaganza is on May 5, at the new Timberlake Lodge, The Lake at Lissara. This is a free event as our sponsor for the Spring Parade, The Lake at Lissara, will be hosting the event. yy Our Fall Parade of Homes Kick-Off follows on May 19, in the barn at Brookberry Farm. Pro-Build is the sponsor of this fun event for the family. As you see our HBA is busy this spring but we need your HELP! Our membership has decreased and we need to maintain a higher level of active members to continue to meet the needs of our companies within our industry. We want to start internally by bringing this to your attention. Our Board of Directors has just named May as Membership Month. The official theme is Each One Counts – Every One Counts. This is a true statement as each one counts is an expression of appreciation for you and your company. Every one counts also holds true as our total membership effort is to grow memberships. To help us with this initiative, your goal is to recruit 1 new member. To help accomplish this, our Board approved a FREE BONUS PACKAGE. A “season pass” for you and your new member, to our 3 remaining socials and 1 membership dinner this year. It is that easy, but this needs to happen before May 24th, NAHB Membership Day! If you have questions please call on a board member or our staff for assistance. There is an insert in this newsletter with more details on one side and the benefits to be a member on the flip side. Who will you be inviting to join? 3

GENERAL SHALE BRICK D. Todd Lawson As we approach the Spring Season lots of Homeowners are searching for ways to extend their entertaining space at their homes. One such way is to add an outdoor living area. In reading a recent article in a remodeling magazine one of the five top remodeling ideas is to add an outdoor living room outside their homes. In doing this it creates a way to expand our family time and build friendship even in our backyards. Some of the ways the do-it-yourself homeowner’s are doing this is by taking that existing patio adding either clay or concrete pavers, maybe a fireplace, fire pit or even a water feature to create that warm family atmosphere. As we all know, our kids are only small once and most have never had the experience of enjoying the outdoors. And with fuel cost on the rise and families spending more time at home this is the perfect way to have quality time with family and friends. Feel free to contact us with any questions on how you might create your own outdoor living room that you could start building next weekend at your home. BUILDING PROFESSIONALS REMODELERS UPDATE Mike Scardina, President, NAHBR, HBAWS Let me start by thanking everyone for their support and efforts with our Showcase this year. Although the weather did not cooperate on Saturday, we still had good traffic and Sunday was a beautiful day for potential customers to come see our wonderful projects this year. I think spring has finally arrived, our housing market is improving, and it is going to be a wonderful summer season. This is a great time for outdoor projects; landscaping, decks, and other outdoor living areas. It is great to see home owners wanting to improve the quality of their living space (in doors and out) and stay in their current homes longer. This provides us with many potential clients and will make for a great summer. Our next meeting is May 10. Caren Jenkins, RSN BSN will be presenting about lead based paint; sources and health effects. I think it is not only important to remove these toxins safely, but it is important to know why these toxins are hazardous so we can better educate our customers.

On April 5th, at our regular meeting, PWB collected used books to donated to the Shepherd’s Center for their used book sale. We had a speaker from the Center who gave a very informative presentation regarding the many programs the Center has for Senior Citizens. We also voted to sell $5.00 coupons for the Belk Charity Day on April 16th. The proceeds from the sale of these coupons will be donated to Hospice in memory of Darlene Good. The May 3 meeting will be at 7pm, at June Delugas Interiors, Inc. (2575 Old Glory Rd, Ste 100, Clemmons, NC). The June 7 meeting will be a social meeting hosted by Wanda Wilson. Please contact the HBA office if you are interested in joining PWB.

Fall Association House Progressing Beautifully Builder

The 2011 Parade Association Home is well under way in Brookberry Farm. This fabulous work in progress will feature a stunning brick and stone exterior reminiscent of the English Country style, with accents such as arched windows, a prominent stone front facing chimney, and a barn door style 3-car garage. Around back, the home offers a walk out covered patio with a secluded view of the woods and the lake. While this home feels like, and is, a beautiful private oasis, it is only a short walk across the street to access the community pool, tennis courts, and fishing pavilions.

Inside this spectacular retreat you will find a spacious gourmet kitchen with an adjacent breakfast room. The kitchen island provides additional bar seating along with extra countertop workspace for food preparation. Off the kitchen is a cozy keeping room with a stone fireplace, a large laundry room, and a drop zone off the garage complete with storage cubbies. The main level also features an additional 2-sided fireplace that sits between the dining room and the large family room, and a study/office with a great view of the lake and pool. A Master Suite completes the main level of this fabulous and functional home.

GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS REPORT Nancy Gould - Joint Governmental Affairs Director

~IMPORTANT~ KEEP’EM HEADED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION Don’t miss out on this very rare opportunity to improve the future of North Carolina and our local communities, and make it easier for all of us to make a decent living. Plus, it’s easy! All that’s required is for you to share any problems you’ve experienced with state regulations, rules or procedures that have negatively impacted your business with the State Regulatory Reform Committee. What regulations bug you? The Joint Committee on Regulatory Reform, chaired by Senators Harry Brown (Jones) and David Rouzer (Johnston) and Representatives Marilyn Avila (Wake) and Pat McElraft (Carteret) have been conducting a statewide listening tour to receive feedback from the public on burdensome state regulations. The committee is tasked with scrutinizing all state regulations on the private sector and targeting outdated rules and regulations that should be eliminated. It is comprised of nine Senators and nine Representatives including one of our local senators, Don East.

ncleg.net. Just tell them about your experience with “outdated, unnecessary, unduly burdensome, or vague rules and rule-making procedures that are an impediment to private sector job creation.” In addition, I encourage you to also share any problems encountered at the local level of government. Doing so goes beyond the scope of their task, but it will help our state legislators learn more about all the local regulations, on top of the state (and federal) regulations, that can make doing business overly complicated, time consuming and expensive. Now do it. If we really want to see substantial changes made by the state legislature when the Reform Committee submits its report in May 2012, much more input from us is necessary. I know from the many calls I receive, that excessive, ill drafted regulations are a major problem for lots of real estate brokers, developers and contractors. So, let’s stop complaining and use this chance to change things! Please, write the Reform Committee today!

At the listening tour meeting held in Greensboro last month, a few WSRAR and HBAWS members shared their concerns about duplicate and confusing local regulations and how too many complicated, expensive and unenforced new regulations are driving up costs for licensed contractors (and the home owner or buyer) and not for the unlicensed “let me build it for way less” guys, who are increasing in number. Here’s what you do. Although the listening tour across the state has concluded, the committee is still soliciting input, especially business owners. A website for the committee has been launched at www.ncleg.net/regreform that lets you read the bill that created the Regulatory Committee and its work. The website also houses a web-based submittal form as a tool for collecting public input, or you can simply send an email to: regreform@ 13
