C O U N C I L R E M O D E L E R S 8

The kids are back in school so now it’s time to sit down and decide what to do about that bathroom….or kitchen…..or if we can add on that Family Room…..or finish the basement. At least that is what has been making my phone ring lately, hopefully yours as well! It seems vacations over the Summer months always slow down some remodeling decisions, but now that Fall is here our customers are back in planning mode.

Barry Wilson, Remodelers President Houck Residential Designers 336.817.9835

Speaking of planning, if you have a remodeling project that you are currently working on now is the time to evaluate that project to see if it would be a good fit for the Spring Parade of New and Remodeled Homes! Having the right client and the right job for the Parade is difficult so planning early and recruiting your client onto the Parade bandwagon as soon as possible will only make it easier. The Spring Parade is a great way to create more visibility for your company and expose your clients to new ideas so please take advantage of this opportunity, we need as much participation as possible. The Remodelers voted in our President for 2015 during the September meeting; I would like to congratulate Lee Riddle of RL Riddle Construction. Thank you Lee for agreeing to serve, we look forward to your guidance! The fourth quarter of the year will be filled with good opportunities to showcase your company and network with your fellow members. The October meeting will be a product night of which the details with be forthcoming. If you are interested in presenting a product or service, or if you would like to join the Remodelers or attend a meeting, please contact the HBA office or myself for more information.

ASSOCIATE MEMBERS COMMITTEE - GUEST COLUMN Home Staging Makes a Difference Making a difference in how a home is perceived by a potential buyer could break or make a sale. Furnishings and accessories and lighting can make a house feel like a home. Potential buyers find it easier to imagine living in the house when it is furnished. It can also give them an idea of how to arrange furniture in an open concept floor plan, which can be challenging. For the builders that we work with, we assist with the process of staging. Space planning for furniture should be considered before construction begins on a home. Sometimes, a wall may need to be moved to better accommodate furniture arrangements and light. Furnishings and accessories should complement the style of the home and be beautifully displayed. In other words, don’t put a traditional sofa in a modern style house just for the sake of not having an empty house. Accessories and lamps will complete the look, but remember, less is more. You do want the house to look lived in, but not overdone. A few accents here and there will be plenty. So why not go the extra mile? There are plenty of inexpensive furnishings and accessories to be found that can complete the look of a new home. Growing our Strength through Member Recruitment, Retention and Involvement What a great year for HBA Winston Salem! 2014 continues to be a dynamic year with great membership growth and retention. As the SPIKE chair elect, I feel this is a good time to tell a little about myself and give my thoughts about our future. Busch Insurance Services, Inc. is a 2nd generation Property & Casualty Insurance Agency in Winston Salem. In the office we have over 50 years of experience with commercial and personal insurance. I started my career as a Claims Adjuster investigating car accidents in multiple states on the East coast, including North Carolina. I then transitioned to losses involving homes, commercial buildings and farms, focusing on North Carolina only. Joining Busch Insurance Services has allowed me to become involved in HBAWS and the Optimist Club of Winston Salem. Optimist serves the youth of our community through sports and scholastic programs. I am currently an active club member and coach for U-11 boys soccer. The most common phrase I heard when I joined the HBAWS was “you will get out of this what you put in. For me, that continues to be the case but the HBA has offered many more benefits. I have had the opportunity to participate at the local and state levels. I have seen the impact we can have when meeting with our local legislators and I am proud to be involved with another industry that serves our community. I will do my best to keep up with Jerry Cowan! SPIKE is proud to say our last new member orientati on was packed with new members, ambassadors and sponsors. Additionally, we continue to see new members take on the HBA mindset of involvement and committee service. As SPIKE chair, I plan to keep similar membership goals and promote new member involvement. I also plan to promote our members doing business with members theme. I think 2015 will be an exciting year and I look forward to leading and learning. Our Professional Women Group have recently been involved with Stop Child Abuse Now, Educators Warehouse, and Newborns In Need. We are excited about being in a leadership role to accomplish philanthropic works for HBAWS in our local communities. We are also open to new ideas and suggestions from the HBA community on other entities to become involved with & support. Please remind any women in your business that becoming involved in the Home Builders Association is a rewarding endeavor and what better way to do so than to join this active & dynamic group of women. We are excited to have our 2015 slate of officer nominations announced & will vote on those candidates at our October meeting and install them at our dinner meeting in November. We look forward to our October meeting, to be held at gracious Missy Easter’s home and celebrate the Build Pac efforts with a Black Jack for BUILD PAC Tourney. LOTS of fun to be had at this event, and we are typically joined by some of the other board members [HBA presidents: current, past & incoming 2015] as well as our Build Pac Chairperson. MEMBER REBATE PROGRAM Since the Member Rebate Program has been offered as a free member benefit of NCHBA, it has given participating members a total of $116,480.50. With 152 members participating in the program, that is an average of $766.32 going to each builder and remodeler member! NCHBA’s Member Rebate Program lets builders and remodelers receive cash rebates for using certain manufacturers’ products in the building and remodeling of homes. There are currently 45 participating manufacturers covering 36 different product categories. One of the newest manufacturers to join the program is AZEK Building Products. With multiple products to claim for including decking, moulding and trim, AZEK Building Products is an excellent addition to this member benefit. Once a member is registered, they are eligible to claim on a quarterly basis. The deadline to claim for the current quarter is the end of August, 2014. Any home or remodeling project completed from January – June is able to be claimed at this time. The claiming process is just as simple as registering. A project is ready to be claimed for once the entire project is completed. The claim form asks for the member’s company name, the project’s address, and the project’s completion date. The member then completes the information requested per each manufacturer used, typically subcontractor or supplier, model number, or quantity used. No receipts are needed! For example, if the builder uses Therma-Tru Fiberglass Doors, the member will check the highest level of product used and list the product number. Hearth & Home asks for the Fireplace Distributor, the quantity of fireplaces used, and their Model Numbers. Nationwide, over 70% of builders and remodelers have received what they paid in annual dues, plus made a profit by participating in this free member benefit. Once a project is completed and the form is filled out, all the builder has to do is send it in, whether it is by mail, email, or fax. Members can also claim using the convenient online form. Get the most of your membership by taking advantage of this free member benefit. First you need to register: www.HBArebates.com - this tells them where to send your rebate check! www.HBArebates.com 21
