SPOTLIGHT

y l i m a F g n i t a r b e Cel Caregivers

*All family members were unable to be present for this photo.

Treasure Valley Hospice had the honor of serving the Ogletree family. This family holds a special place in our heart because they were one of the first families that we served in Mountain Home after we opened our satellite office there. We understand that family caregivers have special responsibilities that change their lives forever. Our team was blessed to know "Tree" Ogletree and to serve his family.

The Ogletree Family

We had the opportunity to interview Mary Ogletree (wife) and Midge Nelson (sister) after the death of Johnnie (Tree) Fred Ogletree. Here is a summary of their personal story. In 2000, Tree Ogletree learned that he had cancer. He had such a strong desire to live that his family found it contagious. Tree was endured as the nucleus and as a hero to his entire family. The Ogleetree’s spent very little time talking about dying and instead focused on living. Nothing would slow Tree down. He concentrated on the things he needed to accomplish. He worked hard to make sure everything was taken care of for his family while he could.

In the course of our experience, our family experienced times of sadness like any family would as they watched their loved one become weaker. However, Tree set an amazing example for all of our family. One of Tree’s primary goals was to remodel our home, which he accomplished with assistance from his brother in law. Even when his Hospice nurse would come to visit him, it would be difficult to get him to take a break from remodeling our home. He taught us to be strong during difficult times.

If we could offer any advice to family caregivers, it would be to follow your ill loved ones lead. Talk about the things your loved one want to talk about. Laugh with them, cry with them and just be there for them. Try to leave your personal hurt, worries, fear and anger (for the disease) behind. Your loved ones wants and needs to feel valuable for as long as they are with you. Our focus was to make Tree’s last days special, happy and comfortable. We have found that the memories of Tree’s last five months to be precious beyond words.

Hospice was an invaluable resource to our entire family. It was reassuring to know we could call Treasure Valley Hospice when we were scared or didn’t know what to do. No one in our family had a medical background and we had not been through this before. Our nurse (Bobbie Spencer) not only took great care of him but she made Tree smile and laugh. Tree looked forward to her visits and we began to think of her as a part of our family. The Hospice team was there for us in person and by phone whenever we needed them.

We plan on paying it forward by participating in walks for the cure and with other cancer fund raising projects. We want to help other families that are going through difficult times.

Favorite Bible Verses to Get Us through This Time: (Midge) Philippians 4:13: I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me. (Midge) Proverbs 3:5: Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding.

Always my favorite time of year. I think we are all relieved to feel the cooler weather and the slower pace that fall seems to bring. Hopefully you are taking a relaxing break while you are reading this local magazine. While you peruse the pages, please be mindful of all of the wonderful, locally owned businesses we have here in our area. Support Local, Play Local, Eat Local and Buy Local, is the message of The Urban Liaison Magazine and we are honored to represent so many local businesses in relaying this vital message. I write about the importance of Buy Local each issue and have for five years, and yet the message seems ambitiously received but not implemented. I ask that all of you seriously think about the power we have, in every purchase we make, to support or not support our local economy. So many small local companies are on the verge of losing their dreams and their livelihoods because the Buy Local message is not sinking in. Local citizens are the biggest determining factor in whether our communities thrive or struggle. That's us, guys! The determining factor! Thank you so much for your continued support, your interest in the Urban Liaison Magazine, and especially for Buying Local.

Bowling Food Drinks ArcaDE

FUN Written by

Christy Hovey

In a league OF its own

As you zoom along Eagle Road you can’t miss the amazing expanse and shiny new lifestyle center that is called The Village at Meridian. Standing in a league of its own within The Village at Meridian is Big Al’s.

S

panning 66,000 square feet and conveniently located at 1900 N. Eagle Road in Meridian, Big Al’s is a giant hub of energy. But what the public may not know is this: Big Al’s is not just a super-sized bowling alley. In addition to its 42 bowling lanes, including a private 12 lane cosmic bowling area, you will also find the largest arcade in the northwest. Tucked within the building there are also three bars with their own distinct amenities for hours of entertainment. Arguably, Big Al’s is the ultimate family destination and the largest adult playground in the Treasure Valley.

Big Al’s just celebrated their one-year anniversary since opening in the valley on August 6th, 2012, but the Big Al’s story actually began in 2004. The current owners took a round trip vacation around the country with all of their grandkids. This adventure opened their eyes to the fact that while there were places to stop and entertain the kids, rarely would they run across an establishment that included amusement for the adults too. Their desire to find a one-stop shop that was family friendly but also provided a reprieve for adults inspired them to fill this niche. Focusing on the concept of creating an entertainment oasis for both kids and adults all located under one roof, the first Big Al’s was built in 2006. The first building was constructed as

a one level in the owners’ hometown of Vancouver, Washington. It became so successful that in 2008 they expanded on their family friendly concept in Beaverton, Oregon with a two-story building. This endeavor also experienced tremendous success, and in 2012 the Big Al’s in Meridian followed suit. With businesses vying to be a part of the new development in The Village at Meridian, it was the ideal setting to best serve the Treasure Valley. This year, Big Al’s is the “Official Away Game Headquarters” of Boise State Football. Built to resemble a stadium, Big Al’s Sports Bar & Grill boasts a well stocked bar, a contemporary menu with unique selections like their peanut butter bacon burger, and enough room for your big group to meet and enjoy the casual atmosphere. Entertainment abounds with a dozen big screen plasma

HD TVs and the biggest wide screen in the Treasure Valley: a 14’x55’ jumbotron that can broadcast three larger-than-life games or display up to twelve screens at once. Upstairs in the Skybox 21+ lounge you will also find a full private bar, two championship pool tables, shuffleboard, a full-swing golf simulator, and classic arcade games. The Skybox sits atop the sports bar providing a fantastic birds-eye view of the jumbotron and all of the action below. You won’t want to miss their happy hour offerings that includes select beers and appetizers at a special discount. Adults are

especially thrilled with the tantalizing 2-for-1 happy hour drinks including their Mason jar cocktails and the discounted beer tube that comes filled with one hundred ounces of your favorite beer. Aside from all of the amenities that are appealing to adults, Big Al’s ultimately strives to cater to a variety of age categories and demographics. From a company standpoint they believe that anyone at any income level should be able to enjoy everything that Big Al’s has to offer. They want to squash the misconception that because the building is so extravagant that it might not be affordable. Big Al’s was pleased to offer the Kids Bowl Free event all summer long where kids under 15 got two free games of bowling. It is important to them that they are constantly offering promotions that are adding value to their guest’s experience. This fall, Big Al’s is featuring the new Eat2Play combo for kids. When children come in with their parents, if a kids meal or entrée is purchased, the child will receive a $5.00 fun card in the arcade. There is nothing in comparison to Big Al’s arcade. It spans 7,000 square feet of the building and features all of the latest and greatest games, providing hours of excitement and fun. Since Big Al’s recognizes that kids love winning prizes, they pride themselves on the fact that they are hands-down the largest prize redemption center in the northwest. They don’t skimp on the tickets, and you won’t believe the prizes that they carry; iPads and TV’s are among the goods that can be won. With everything that Big Al’s has to offer, you must experience it for yourself. The next time you are planning a fun day with your family or a night out with your friends, stop by Big Al’s. You will not be disappointed with the array of lights, colors, excitement and entertainment that awaits you!

Which Diet is Right for You? written by Jason

Wanlass

Shannon Crozier: One of Jason's Success Stories

T

here are so many diets out there. Paleo, Atkins, The Zone Diet… Each author makes a sound argument for the benefits of his approach, while critics continue to point out the shortcomings. There really is not a “one size fits all” approach when it comes to nutrition. Many factors influence how an individual responds to dietary intake and regardless of individual differences the biggest challenge most people face is consistency. Change is hard, especially when it comes to nutrition! People underestimate both the difficulty of change and the time it will take. Studies show that people are most successful when they master one behavior before introducing a new one. By introducing even two new behaviors at once, the failure rate is nearly 100%. Outlined below are several nutritional habits from which everyone can benefit. Pick one and put all of your focus and effort into that for the next 3-4 weeks. Once it becomes habit, introduce the next. Remember to give it time! The goal is permanent change…one step at a time. 1) Slow Down! Many of us eat way too fast. It takes about 20 minutes for our sensation of fullness to kick in. If you eat too quickly, you are more likely to overeat by the time your brain can communicate it’s time to stop. The goal should be 15-20 minutes to consume each meal. If this is too ambitious for you, try slowing down by just 1-2 minutes. That can make a big difference. From there you can work towards the 15-20 minute goal.

5) Eat “Quality” Carbohydrates. Cut back on processed and sugary carbs like juice, white flour, etc., and focus on eating whole foods and fiber rich carbs. This includes a mix of vegetables, beans, legumes, whole grain breads & pastas, quinoa, long grain rice, etc. Typically, vegetables, beans, legumes, and most fruit can be consumed often and at any time of the day. Ideally, breads, pasta, and rice should be consumed after workouts or physical activity, especially if fat loss is a goal. This is because the body has its highest tolerance for carbohydrates post-workout than any other time. This results in less carbohydrate “spill over” which goes into fat storage. 6) Include Protein-Dense Foods & Healthy Fats. Up to one serving (20-30g) for women and two servings for men (40-60 g) should be included with each meal. A portion size of protein is visually about the size of the palm of your hand. Protein dense foods include lean meats - ground beef, chicken, turkey, bison. Other great sources are salmon, tuna, eggs, cottage cheese, tofu, and beans. A mixture of fats should also be part of a balanced diet. Vitamins A, D, E, and K are critical to optimal human function, and can only be absorbed by the body with adequate fat intake. Don’t forget to exercise!

2) Stop Eating at 80% Fullness. Rather than eating to the point of fullness, focus on eating until you are no longer hungry. In conjunction with slowing down, this again will allow plenty of time for your brain to communicate that it’s time to end the meal. Additional benefits include better overall appetite cues, improved digestion, and increased performance with your workouts. 3) Eat every 2-4 hours. When you go for long periods without food, the body goes into conservation mode and holds onto excess fat. Eating smaller and more frequent meals keeps your metabolism running at higher levels throughout the day, allowing your body to let go of the extra stores. 4) Eat Fruits and/or Vegetables with Each Meal. There is a good reason why mothers harp at their children to eat their fruits and veggies! Nutrient dense and low in calories, fruits & vegetables are packed with vitamins & minerals, and actually help buffer the body’s acidic response to protein and grains. One medium sized fruit, ½ cup of raw chopped fruit or vegetables, and 1 cup of raw, leafy vegetables each equal one serving. for RingAim of Fire 1-2 servings per meal.

Foodies One day Pat’s brother-in-law suggested he combine his three favorite things - cooking, camping and comedy to create videos and performances. He came up with the idea after watching Pat cook delicious and unique camp foods while entertaining fellow campers! Soon after, while on the road performing, Pat met fellow comedian and former chef Mike Faverman. After discovering their mutual love of cooking and comedy they created an 18 recipe DVD filled with humor and filmed in McCall with local campers.

PAT MAC:

ING K O O C D O O G HIS IS NO JOKE

Boise native and local comedian Pat Mac has always believed it is important to "find something you love and make a living doing it." He is a one of the lucky individuals who has achieved the goal of making a living while pursuing his dreams. Pat “Mac” McAllister grew up in Boise and began working with chefs in his father’s restaurant, “Michaels” when he was ten years old. Cooking, entertaining and bartending came naturally for Pat. He then began working at Albertson’s, and after several years there he decided to try his hand at comedy. That decision changed his life forever. Pat began performing at open mic nights at local comedy clubs. This new found love of stand-up comedy provided travel and performances all across the United States in major comedy clubs, corporations and colleges. But even after becoming a full time comedian, Pat felt something was missing.

Seven years later that DVD lead to a live comedy cooking show, cookbook and eight more DVDs. Pat and Mike are known as "Mac and the Big Cheese" and they can be found at RV expos and trade shows demonstrating outdoor meals while serving up jokes to live audiences. The cookbook, called “Ultimate Camp Cooking,” features eighty-two recipes specializing in camp or tailgate dishes. The chemistry between the two has led to potential future television projects. "I love to bring people together through food and laughter'" Pat laughs, "In fact that has become my motto." When he's not on the road he can found on KTVB channel 7 Saturday morning news doing a guest recipe, or staging an "Iron Skillet" competition at Crush Wine bar in Eagle. For the competition Pat sets up cooking stations and assigns teams of amateur chefs to each station. He gives each team the same four ingredients, but teams must sing and answer trivia questions for oil, seasonings, and extra ingredients. Judges choose the best dish after a fun-filled night of competition. The "Iron Skillet" competition has further developed into great corporate team building experiences. Employees enjoy Pat and Mike’s crazy antics while learning team building skills. If you are interested, contact Pat at 866-5492 or xmaclaugh@msn.com. Pre-cook the chicken breasts by boiling them in a small sauce pan for 20 minutes. Let stand for 15 minutes to cool, and then chop into bite size pieces. Using a sauté pan over medium heat add garlic and onions with olive oil and sauté for 5 minutes. Add the cooked chicken, sesame oil, teriyaki and soy sauce and sauté for another 8 minutes. Add sweet chili sauce and continue to heat for 5 minutes. Turn heat off and add green onions, dry ramen. Serve on lettuce pieces.

Have a little extra fun this year by dressing up as your alter ego or if it’s a family affair pick a theme everyone can stick to by checking out my Halloween Costume Guide for 2013. Taking cues from this summer’s Hollywood baby boom will be our first stop on the costume guide. With all the buzz these newborns have created, why not take your Halloween inspiration from the most talked about celebrities right now -- famous babies! Try a funny version of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s daughter, North West this year for a room full of laughs. Accessories to look for would include a jewel-encrusted pacifier, Kanye’s Yeezus album, and a reality TV camera. If royalty is more your cup of tea, dressing up as Baby George Alexander Louis could be the perfect fit. Make it a family affair by dressing as parents Prince William and Kate Middleton. The breakout hit Pitch Perfect is still one of the most searched and watched movies, thanks to a surge in DVD popularity. Dress up as your favorite character or get a group together and play the Barden Bellas for a night! If taking inspiration from action movies is more for you look no further than The Hunger Games. With the release of the Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire, just a few weeks after Halloween, there are multiple opportunities for homemade costumes inspired by these blockbuster hits. Think dingy, arrow-slinging Katniss and other colorful citizens of the Capitol. Another costume goldmine, The Great Gatsby, has made a dramatic impact on the fashion world this year, so finding accessories should be a cinch. hen you walk into Renewed Expressions Consignment Boutique you might think you are in the wrong place. It looks more like a high-end boutique than a resale store. That is by design. “For under $200, someone could walk out of this store with up to five basic outfits, and the shoes and accessories to go with them,” says co-owner Kathy Reitz. Renewed Expressions is a clothes shoppers’ heaven. Celebrating their eighth year in business this October, they’re obviously doing something right. What wins customers over? “Customer service, fantastic inventory and great prices,” Kathy says. “Also, we’ll say hello when you walk in and thank you when you leave. I have a wonderful customer-oriented staff. They’re loyal and my customers are loyal. It’s because we treat them well.” She adds, “With over 5,000 square feet filled with zero to plus-size clothing, shoes, jewelry and accessories, we have something for everyone.” Impossible to refute when looking around at a sales floor filled with busy shoppers. Kathy knows she’s her own best advertiser, and admits that she dresses up to run errands and go to church. “I want people to ask me where I got my clothes,” she says, “and I think the styles are adorable right now.” It’s not just Kathy. Her customers are Renewed Expressions evangelists, too. “We’ve definitely got customers that have a “look.” Thanks to them, we gain even more customers. People tell us they found the store because of co-workers that kept coming to work each day with cute clothes. Those coworkers told them to come to us.”

22

| The Urban Liaison Magazine - Treasure Valley

When it comes to fashion, Kathy and another employee were asked, what is currently in. Their answer: 1 Always wear a pop of color. 2 If you have a small waist, you can (and sometimes should) wear a belt. 3 If you’re ‘going business’, wear subdued pieces, but make a statement by adding color. 4 Use jewelry, scarves, handbags and shoes in your favor. 5 If not going with all the same color when accessorizing, Renewed Expressions recommends going twotoned or three-toned, using browns, reds, grays, purple, or silvers. 6 The blazers, jeans and boots combo (knee high or with the legging boots look) is going to be a classic for a while. 7 Bling is still in. “We can all wear bling,” says Kathy. Her store’s demographic is between 25-55, so she and her staff know the contemporary trends for every age. Still remembered for her crazy-great outfit from the last UL interview, when reminded of what she was wearing, Kathy laughs, “I do love purple.” This innovative boutique owner goes beyond fashion-savvy. When it comes to business, she’s learned the ropes. Renewed Expressions has ridden out the hard years, and the reasons this owner feels they’ve been successful are persistence, customer service and always staying current.

With around twelve box stores surrounding Renewed Expressions, they know very well why they still have an edge. They adjust and provide great value. They turn the boutique into a new store every other month, with items never spending more then sixty days on the rack.

Renewed Expressions has also turned the adjacent store space into a highquality furniture and home décor resale area. They feel they’re now returning somewhat to their roots, although it’s perfectly clear that the clothing is the main and very popular thing, and is here to stay. The store also holds eight big events each year, a favorite being the one held on Super Bowl Sunday. “It’s huge,” Kathy smiles, knowing not every woman wants to sit around serving snacks and watching football when she could be getting great deals on a new wardrobe. “For that particular event, everything in the store is marked thirty percent off, but each event is a little different,” she adds. They also host parking lot sales every Labor Day and Memorial Day, where items are only three dollars. Others could take a tip from Kathy’s marketing methods, too. Renewed Expressions primarily uses a three to four-times-per-month newsletter, sent via email, to keep customers informed about sales and events. Anyone hitting their website can sign up and see when the next big sale hits. When shoppers come in, they’re sent off with a colorful postcard announcing the next fun sale or event, since everybody needs a little something to look forward to. And they have a Facebook page as well. “If you see something in the store that you like, though,” advises Kathy, “You need to grab it. These are one-of-akind items and they go fast. ” Renewed Expressions is the place to be to get a new lease on both your wallet and your wardrobe.

ne of the great perks of writing for UL Magazine, especially articles on local businesses, is that I must personally visit, meet the owners/ managers, tour, and experience the business before I can write an honest review article. In the case of ReJuv Medspa in Meridian, this was one of those overthe-top assignments that simply doesn’t come along very often. The luxurious ReJuv Medspa leaves no detail undone. According to owners Wendy Adams and Stacey Driskell, it’s important that the spa maintain a stellar reputation by always striving to exceed expectations. With more and more returning guests, ReJuv is constantly developing its services menu with state-of-

the-art products & treatments, innovative offerings and an exceptional level of service. Yet all this must be accomplished without an ounce of pretentiousness. “In fact,” says Wendy Adams, “our major goal is to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere where our clients can completely relax and enjoy, with no pressure to purchase and only the friendliest, most knowledgeable and by all means most personable staff.” My personal experience at ReJuv was beyond sensational. The second I walked in the door I felt right at home and so welcome, yet pampered and tended-to at the same time. That’s a combination that is difficult to achieve! The front desk staff welcomed me and set the stage for what turned out to be a truly magnificent experience. I had a sampling of services which included a Venus Freeze

(I’ll explain in a minute), Botox injections, uber relaxing spa pedicure, and I finished up with a professional makeup application. The “”Venus Freeze” was first. Now I have to say that I think facials are THE single most relaxing treatment a person can have – way more relaxing than massage. Well, the Venus Freeze is the king, except that not only does it relax but it profoundly improves your skin! It is a non-surgical procedure that tightens the skin, reduces wrinkles and cellulite, and is even effective with body contouring! Furthermore, it has nothing whatsoever to do with “freezing” in fact it’s warm and soft and quiet and lovely. VF is a soothing, relaxing procedure (just under an hour long) that actually stimulates collagen production and gives your face a more youthful appearance. It was all I

could do to stay awake. Special consideration was even given to the treatment bed as well; all their beds are designed to be more comfortable with thick mattresses and softer face cradles - and they’re even heated! I absolutely loved it! And best of all, my face looked remarkable after just one treatment. It was fuller, glowing, youthful and fresh looking. To get the full benefit of the Venus Freeze, Wendy recommended a series of 4-6 treatments. I have to tell you - I WILL do this again!

background and current medications and then offer you the choices that are available to help correct skin issues and improve your looks while staying within your budget. For the Botox injections ReJuv’s in-house Medical Director, Dr. Cynda Tomlinson, was present with the technician. Dr. Tomlinson not only participated in the evaluation of my skin, she stayed during the entire procedure, making suggestions and overseeing. Needless to say, I was impressed!

The Botox injections did sting a little bit, but nothing severe and they applied a numbing agent before Next came the Botox injecstarting. It all took about Co-Owners tions. Now mind you they 45 minutes. When I was Wendy Adams and don’t just decide they’ll do finished I was AMAZED Stacey Driskell Botox or Venus Freeze or at how I looked. There was Juvederm XC or any of the a remarkable difference in treatments they offer. Above all, the staff my face. Wrinkles were dramatically at ReJuv Medspa are professionals and reduced, especially above my lip and before they recommend anything they between my eyebrows. But – as they carefully analyze your skin, evaluate your told me at the time – it continued to get areas of concern, consider your medical better and better in the days following.

I’m now at day 5 and I can’t believe how much younger I look! People keep asking me if I’ve been on vacation, or if I got my hair cut! Ha! There are so many reasons to visit ReJuv Med Spa. They offer more services than I can possibly mention here, and they are so far above regular spas that just offer waxing, massages and mani/pedis. ReJuv is a way of life, especially as we Baby Boomers get “up there” and simply are not ready for the support hose, hair nets and sensible shoes – NOR will we ever want to even look like we’re ready for that lifestyle! Check them out! I promise you are going to L O V E this place. Look for me there! I plan to go a lot.

BUKKIT

is a band that fuses blues, funk, folk, and rock. They call themselves Rock/ Trashcan/Punkfolk. In 2007 Bukkit was formed with Mike Wang on guitar and vocals, Kris Hart on bass guitar/vocals, and Aaron Sundggard on drums.

Bukkit is also a state of mind. It is everyday life; the hardships of human nature. Bukkit has the feeling of life in their music, of your life in their music. They speak for the blue collar man. They are the every week paycheck, the bottom of your bottle, your car broken down car. Bukkit is life.

Written by Chris

I have been covering local music in the Urban Liaison Magazine for 2 years now and it has been amazing! I owe a great deal of thanks to the publisher of the UL, Cheryl Richard. It is an honor to bring our talented local musicians more publicity. My goal is to inform everybody that we don’t have to spend a lot of money on traveling performers that take our money and run. We all need to help our friends and neighbors, by supporting the bands I highlight in each issue. Please take the time to find and “like”the band I manage, called Grindsole. Find it on Facebook at www.facebook.com/grindsole. If you are in a band and need help getting started, please contact me at chris.holton@ymail.com or by phone, 208-861-2847.

With all this said Bukkit just tries to stay true to the music. Not interested in writing the all American pop song, or conforming to what is popular by today’s standards. Bukkit just believes good music is good music and people will see that. No fancy stage shows, just a band and their message. Bukkit tries to pay homage to all genres of music. They don’t believe in pigeon holing themselves in one particular sound. “Do what feels right, do what is right for the song, and do what’s right for the message we are sending the people.” Mike Wang is the genius child behind Bukkit. Hands down, Mike is the mad scientist behind Bukkit. Kris and Aaron give him the canvas with their incredible rhythm section to “puke out his art and make it living,” an ever-changing art that Bukkit strongly believes in. “We are Bukkit. We are no one else. Believe in Bukkit and you are believing in you.” Bukkit has played with some incredible local bands. They have played the three day festival “Rock the Mountain” six years in a row. They have played every rundown little venue to big concert hall. Bukkit has played with Long beach Rehab out of California, White Witch Canyon, and NonPoint from Florida. They can play rocking shows, acoustic shows, mellow shows you name it. Bukkit can even do country shows. Deborah Leffler

Welcomes You Home

The Bzy Bee Real Estate Difference Written By Jessica

he decision to buy a home is one of the biggest financial decisions a person can make. Since it is such a large commitment, it can be a stressful time for potential homebuyers. Fortunately, people like Deborah Leffler succeed in making the experience, from lending approval to signing, less worrisome. What makes working with Leffler, of Bzy Bee Real Estate (Keller Williams Realty Boise) even more reassuring, is that she makes a genuine effort to work with her clients to make purchasing their home a more comfortable experience.

of a troubled housing market. “So many people are struggling right now, and I do my best to offer my help to find good options for bad situations,” said Leffler.

Leffler began her career in real estate after experiencing difficulty in finding a job. It was then that a friend suggested that she get her real estate license. Since Leffler had an extensive sales background, she decided to follow her friend’s advice and became a licensed real estate agent in 1994.

Leffler confidently leads her clients through every step of purchasing their new home. From the initial meeting and consultation to find what the client is looking for, to the final closing, Leffler is there with a smile and helpful advice. Although the needs and processes vary slightly according to the client, Leffler is still able to guide homebuyers through the process with as little stress as possible.

Clients all over the Treasure Valley can attest to Leffler’s personable and professional nature. These traits stem from her lifelong passion for both sales and making people happy. “When I was in kindergarten and we were asked what we wanted to be when we grew up, I said I wanted to be a flower seller,” said Leffler. “I liked the idea of giving people something that would make them smile.” Leffler was born in Idaho, which makes her very familiar with the various areas that potential homebuyers may have questions about. This allows her to provide informed, insightful answers. This knowledge has assisted her in finding homes for first time buyers, people looking to relocate, and those looking to upgrade to a larger house.

| The Urban Liaison Magazine - Treasure Valley

The passion Leffler has for helping her clients is evident in the way she works to find their perfect home. “One of the best experiences for me is to be showing a house to a client and to see that particular look in their eyes that tells me that they have finally found ‘the one’,” said Leffler. “The look that says that they’ve found their home.”

Deborah and her family

Another service that Leffler has provided her clients has been as a consultant and counselor to people who are looking to sell or buy homes while facing the difficulties 32

Along with her friendliness and expertise, another asset Leffler possesses is a great working relationship with local banks, mortgage lenders, and other professionals who are necessary to those who are purchasing a home. Having these connections makes for a much smoother experience when guiding people through the home buying process.

The relationships that Leffler forms with her clients are another asset to Bzy Bee Real Estate. Approximately 97% of her business is made up of return clients and referrals. “At the end of the home buying process, many people consider me a family friend, “ Leffler said. “I’ve been invited to weddings, baby showers, and birthday parties. To them, I become more than a real estate agent. I become a friend.”

Most people who come to Bzy Bee Real Estate do so because they know that Leffler makes each client a priority. She makes it a point to always be accessible, and is willing to help strategize and problem-solve with clients

whenever they need her assistance. “I’m very passionate and find so much joy in my job,” said Leffler. “It’s such a wonderful feeling to bring people together with their new home.” Leffler’s outgoing personality and perseverance make her an ideal agent to work with. She only allows “no” to mean no after all possible options have been exhausted in the effort to purchase a home. “The name ‘Deborah’ means The Bee an industrious worker,” said Leffler. “I do my best to live up to my name.” The meaning for “Deborah” is one reason that the name of Leffler's business, Bzy Bee Real Estate, came about. “When you think of an industrious worker, most people think of a bee,” said Leffler. “The thing about bees is that scientifically, a bee shouldn’t be able to fly, but nobody told the bee that they couldn't fly. So they fly. I like to think of myself as that bee: achieving what others may have not thought possible.” For more information on working with Deborah Leffler and Bzy Bee Real Estate (Keller Williams Realty Boise) visit her website at www.bzybee.com. Leffler can also be reached by phone at 208.703.1433 or by email at bzybee@mindspring.com.

What Her Clients are Saying: "Working with Deborah was awesome! We hesitated on building our house because we thought it would be a nightmare, but it turned out to be one of the greatest experiences of our lives. Her availability to us during the process and willingness to be present with us every step of the way is unprecedented." - Helmer Family

"Deborah was available, knowledgeable, and professional. We purchased our third investment property. She gave us comps for the area to make an informed decision to flip it. Within 6 weeks of purchasing, we listed it and received 3 offers on the first day. We accepted and closed with a $4000 over list price cash offer." -David & Debra Schorzman

NEED AN ATTORNEY BUT CAN'T AFFORD ONE?

THIS MIGHT BE THE SOLUTION

O

ver the past few years, an epidemic has spread across the country in the form of a lack of affordable legal assistance. As the economy continues to spiral downward, fewer and fewer people can afford attorneys to represent them. According to the Idaho Court Assistance Office website, some counties in Idaho are currently reporting that eighty percent or more civil cases – especially family law cases – involve selfrepresentation.

When it comes to helping others in providing professional services, Brenda Cameron is at the top of the list. Brenda's experience in the judicial system and law enforcement give her a unique ability to assist and provide resources to individuals who have chosen to represent themselves in court matters. The majority of individuals seeking Brenda's assistance had originally tried to locate affordable legal representation. Most had contacted legal aid and the Volunteer Lawyer Program, only to find there was a waiting period of several months or that they didn’t qualify for assistance. Many had worked with the Court Assistance office, but were frustrated or overwhelmed with the court process.

WITCO: ORGANIZATIONAL EMPLOYMENT SERVICES

A

“Witco staff has a whatever it takes attitude," Niland says. Although the primary goal is to provide a variety of real work experiences where program participants earn wages while learning the skills necessary to prepare for competitive employment and selfadvocacy, Witco believes everyone should be able to earn wages for work performed when community integrated employment is not an option. “We go the extra mile to find work for everyone for whom that is a personal goal”.

s the sign outside the corporate headquarters at 3919 E Ustick in Caldwell reads, Witco is “Where Ability Meets Opportunity.” Step inside and you will see why.

This private not for profit organization, founded in 1974, focuses on helping adults with disabilities obtain job training and employment to achieve career goals. The company operates on a core belief that most people want to work. To that end, at Witco hundreds of individuals receive the assistance they need and become productive, taxpaying citizens. However, President and CEO Mary (M.C.) Niland will tell you that jobs that accommodate individuals with the most severe disabilities are few and far between. Niland points out that as economic development concentrates on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), individuals with intellectual and compounding physical disabilities become unemployed and unemployable at higher rates. The assembly jobs and routine work that used to be available are outsourced leaving the United States and thousands who seek employment, unemployed. Through Organizational Employment Services Witco seeks to remedy that situation by developing partnerships with area businesses to perform commercial work. In its Caldwell facility you will find a crew of workers recycling cable for Idaho Power. Witco began this work more than 35 years ago and has salvaged over four million pounds of power line cable. According to Idaho Power “Witco has offered a

Witco is certified by the Department of Labor to pay people according to their productivity. The company must establish industrial standards based on non-disabled workers and pay those served in Organizational Employment based on their productivity as measured against that approved standard. Wages must be based on the prevailing wages in geographic area served as opposed to minimum wage. This allows even those with the most severe disabilities to earn a paycheck, although some are small. Witco works with some folks who are nonverbal, non-ambulatory and who need assistance in feeding and toileting. Every person earns a paycheck.

skilled workforce to meet our business needs.” Throughout the workplace you will see various sorting and assembly projects as well as entrepreneurial operations including a popcorn business and a trophy and awards shop. In Ontario you’ll find document destruction, a silk screening business and the manufacturing of survival bracelets.

Witco works to assure that all people have the opportunity to experience and benefit from the power and dignity of work. With that as an end goal, the company is constantly in search of work opportunities. You can help by contacting Dennis King, Director of Organizational Work if you are aware of contract or subcontract work opportunities. Dennis can be reached at 208-454-3051 or at dking@witcoinc. net. Witco welcomes visitors.

Your Greatest Opportunity:

ATTITUDE, BEHAVIOR, TECHNIQUE D o you want to be more successful? Make more money? Be a better husband or father? Be a more effective leader? It's no secret that the key to successful change is in the actions we take. But what we often overlook are the three most important attributes we must master in order to succeed. This world is full of people who are stagnant, unhappy, bored – stuck in a life they see as unfulfilling. They are negative, and to them - life is nothing but an endless stream of problems. Sadly, those people are plentiful and for me, they are constant reminders of the person I do not want to be.

Written by

What are the three vital attributes? Attitude, behavior and technique are the key traits one must have in order to become the person he or she wants to be. We can transform ourselves into anything we wish; accomplish whatever we want; it all starts with our own personal attitude, behavior and technique.

1

Your ATTITUDE is your outlook on life. What you think is how you feel, and how you feel is how you act. If your attitude is positive, you send off positive vibrations that attract positive things. A positive attitude is what separates the haves from the have-nots; the winners from losers. If you have a positive attitude you naturally look happy, act happy, live happy - and that optimism is passed on to others just by association.

One key to maintaining a great attitude is learning to shut off the negatives by turning them into opportunities. Here's an example. Sales are down, the bank account is in the single digits, and, if I let them, these problems will overwhelm and keep me in a negative place. But my positive attitude reminds me that I’m doing what I love and I have freedom in my life, and that makes me happy. The money will come just as long as I keep trying. A positive attitude is the key difference in whether I pull myself forward or sit back, give up and tell myself not to try... life is a bummer and I'm a helpless victim.

2

BEHAVIOR is the trait we develop that spurs us to change what we do so that we get different results. We must practice a behavior in order for it to become a habit. One of the biggest influences someone can have on another is to recognize that person's positive traits. Complimenting others doesn’t come naturally to me so I practice recognizing the good things that someone is doing and tell them. I tell strangers all the time the great things that I see they are doing, and the positive effect they are creating. When others recognize and comment, it makes people feel good and reinforces their positive actions. They feel valued. If I recognize and compliment people's actions enough, doing so will eventually turn into a behavior trait and the action will happen automatically. If you want to change the way you do something or you want different results then start practicing the right behaviors.

Brandon Wright

3

TECHNIQUE is how we do it. When we have positive attitudes and practice the right behaviors, we then start developing our techniques, or methods of delivery. We develop a personal strategy and we do it. Then we analyze the process and results, and develop an even better strategy for next time. Your technique is your style, and your style must continue to change and adapt to different situations, people and scenarios. The more you focus on improving your technique, the better your results will be. The greatest opportunities come to those who work for them. A successful self-development program of learning and growing never stops. Those who are disciplined in their growth focus on their attitude, behavior and technique. By perfecting those three attributes we become better business owners, spouses, parents, friends and leaders. The world needs more people who understand that action is the key to succeeding. Focus on what you need to develop and start the three-step process. It is up to you to change.

W

e often hear how something new is "Life-Changing!" Sometimes we feel we "just need a change" - so we get a new hairstyle, rearrange furniture or try a new item on the menu. Change is good, right? Then why can it feel so darn hard? If change were easy, we'd all do it.

does so by: 1) suggesting you Delay action; 2) creating Distraction with something else that seems important; or, 3) causing Disaster with all heck breaking loose. Recognize this is a normal part of change. If you get stuck, re-focus on #1 and #2.

Fact is, change is simply a change in the way we think about things. It can be hard - or easy - you choose. The key is to take charge of the change. Pay attention to what you tell yourself about your efforts. Doing so won't instantly change the circumstance, but it does immediately change your relationship with it. With positive perspective, change is made more easily. CHANGE IS A CHOICE. Whatever the decision, big or small, the choices we make -- the changes we make -- redirect our lives.

4. Track your Changes Similar to keeping a food diary when getting fit, or using a register to manage spending, keep track of the steps you take to make your change. Spend a few minutes each morning to source and write down ideas for inspired action to keep you on task. Marking off steps as you go provides a sense of accomplishment and a record you can duplicate next time you need to make a change.

5 Steps to Creating Sustained Positive Change in Your Life

5. Fire the Lone Ranger If we could do it by ourselves, we'd have done it by now. It is 100% okay to ask for help. There are professionals certified to guide you and help you overcome the fear of completing change. Fear doesn't mean you can't - it only means you haven't. Checking-in regularly with someone gives you courage, stamina, and commitment to your change.

1. Make a Choice Something you want is called longing. Something you don't want is called discontent. We only "Make a Choice" when our longings or discontents get so strong that we must make a change or keep feeling miserable. Our desire must burn so brightly that it darkens any temptation to give up. 2.

Visualize what you want

(not what you don't want)

Create and write down a vivid image of your life as if change has already happened. Refer to this positive, present-tense vision often, especially when you encounter obstacles to the change you seek.

Remember, if change were easy, we'd all do it. Creating sustained change is a skill, that once learned, will last a lifetime. "It's Life-Changing!"

3. Expect the 3 D's When you consciously know you are making positive change, your subconscious attempts to drag you back to your easier, more comfortable old ways - usually with seemingly reasonable, justifiable excuses. It

I

THRIVING!

want to tell you a story of one of my clients. I will call her “Julie.” Sev-

eral years ago, Julie’s life looked like a success story, at least to others. She had a successful corporate career, two children and a happy marriage. But she felt empty inside. She had dreams she had never pursued or even thought about for years. She wanted to do more than just make a pay check – she wanted to make a difference. She yearned for a life of meaning and substance. Julie continued trudging away, focusing on her family and her job and waiting for that once-a-year vacation that enabled her to get away from it all, if only for a week. Over time, she got a new car and eventually a bigger house and more things. And yet, after the “shiny new thing” syndrome wore off, the negative feelings always came back. Julie eventually got angry. The stress was wearing on her and she began taking it out on her family and complaining to her friends. Then her anger turned to depression. For Julie, the depression was worse than the anger because she felt that it would never end and this was all there would be for the rest of her life. At this point I want to stop the story for a moment and look at where Julie was. She loved her kids and her family more than anything. She took pride in the fact that she could care for and provide for them. She was also proud of her job and the success she had created for herself.

to

Yet, she knew there was more to life than the mundane schedule in which she had become trapped. Often called the “mid-life crisis”, she began looking at where she was compared to the expectations she had had of where she should be.

Fast forward another year and Julie was sitting in my office. Her once happy marriage had crumbled, her kids were being shuttled between two houses, and now instead of having pride in her job, she felt disengaged and discouraged about her future. In her own words, she was a mess. Julie and I began working together in an effort to untangle her from her perceived dead-end trap. Today, Julie is a completely different person! She is joyful, happy, content, and focused on the present moment. She now follows her innate wisdom and has once again found passion and fun in her life. As Julie herself sums it up: “Working with Erin has been like shining a light into my soul. I started looking at things differently after just one session. I now know my worth and follow my internal guidance instead of looking outside for my happiness. This is the best gift I have ever given myself and my family.”

Congratulations Julie, for choosing you!

Perfection Proofreading and Editing Patti Saunders Mays, Owner Hello all my favorite Treasure Valley people! Thank you for being so receptive to my new service, “Perfection Proofreading & Editing”! I took on some great new clients last month and had several inquiries, so UL Magazine ads do work, and life is good.

In this issue I want to discuss a problem that is near and dear to my heart because it’s making writers look bad and I aim to shed light on the issue, which is. . . The horrors of spell check. I think I mentioned last issue that not just a few, but most people have difficulty writing. Even highly-educated professionals struggle with their written works and because of that, proofreaders and editors were in great demand before computers became readily available. But along with computers came “the great savior” spell check, and people began depending on it more and more. Now it’s used regularly as a failsafe for any and all writing abilities. And that, dear readers, is a fatal mistake! The thing that many writers don’t realize is that spell check only finds words that are mis-spelled, not words that are mis-used. For example, the word “to” can also be spelled “two” and “too.” Each spelling means something totally different, yet if one were to say “We bought too tickets” instead of “two tickets” spell check would not find that error. Why? Because “two” is not misspelled, it’s just misused. The truth is, spell check doesn’t see any word as incorrect as long as it’s spelled correctly. So if you wrote “we bought TOE tickets, or WINDBLOWN tickets or SMILING tickets – spell check would not see an error because none of those words are misspelled. They’re just misused. Let’s carry this to a ridiculous level so you can see how untrustworthy spell check can be. Let’s say you meant to write: “We went to town and saw a good movie,” but you erroneously wrote: “We want due torn and sawed a Google mood.” What a ludicrous sentence! Yet spell check would not find a single error because every one of those words is spelled correctly. So what if the sentence makes no sense? The spelling is correct and that poor writer comes off looking foolish. Pretty scary, huh? Don’t depend on spell check. It’s a great tool, but it can’t be counted on to find all errors. You need a proofreader. Before closing I’d like to share a review I received last week from a client whose book I recently edited: "I highly recommend Patti's proofreading and editing. She was the editor of my 2nd book and I wish that she had done my first. She is very reasonable, very professional, very good to work with, and as busy as she was, she still managed a good turnaround time. Thanks Patti”

I like smoking! why quit?

Y

ou’ve heard all the reasons to quit, but you like smoking, why quit? With all the stress in your life, quitting smoking is one more stress that you don’t feel that you need at this time, right? How bad could it be, I mean I know lots of people who smoke and they are OK. It hasn’t bothered me or my family, so what’s the big deal anyway? The fact is that 1st hand smoke contains at least 4800 chemicals, many of which are carcinogens,(cancer causing components), that are added by the tobacco manufacturers. Smoke that is breathed in by people around you, your children, friends and co workers, breath in the same cancer causing components that affect smokers directly causing cancer, heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular disease. This is called 2nd hand smoke because these people are not putting the cigarette to their own mouth and smoking directly. When you smoke, some of the nicotine is absorbed into your skin and when you touch another person, this nicotine is absorbed from Written by your touch into their blood stream passing on this poison to the C. Rizzo, next person. This is called 3rd hand smoke and can still cause RRT/RPFT/AE-c heart disease and cardiovascular disease in whomever you touch with this nicotine. Nicotine is a neurotoxin that can be spread from person to person by touch. Could you use a raise? The fact is that when you become a non smoker, all of your insurances go down allowing you to keep more of your money, a raise. According to the American Lung Assoc., a study found that for each employee or dependant that quit smoking found a savings of at least $210 in the first year via savings in medical and life insurance costs. In Idaho, the average smoker can save up to $2,540.00 annually, based on current costs, by quitting smoking. Added to the savings are cleaning and maintenance costs as well as not having decreased resale values of automobiles and homes. Why quit? How about for your own life and health or the life and health of your children and spouse, or the life and health of your pets. The damage caused by you to your family and pets is irreversible and the monies wasted are gone forever. Act now before the damage is too great and the loss is catastrophic. The only winner when it comes to smoking is the tobacco companies and retailers that marked up the product to take more of your money. Choose life and quit now.

The GREAT

W

e hear daily how important exercise is for shedding excess pounds and keeping our bodies functioning at their best, but what about the body that’s past its prime?

Isn’t it really too late to start exercising when people are in their 60’s, 70’s or 80’s? Aging is a fact of life… it’s inevitable that as we age we get weaker, our bones get more porous, our sense of balance diminishes, we develop stiff joints, less muscle and more fat and our thought processes decline. Isn’t it just about impossible to gain muscle when we become “senior citizens”? What’s the point? Isn’t it pretty much impossible to combat, and especially to reverse, these things? Nothing could be further from the truth!

PART 3

What we know is:

• The risk of falling increases with age and is greater for women than for men.

• Two-thirds of those who experience a fall will fall again within six months. • A decrease in bone density (osteoporosis) contributes to falls and the resulting injuries from those falls. • Failure to exercise regularly results in poor muscle tone, decreased strength, and loss of bone mass and flexibility. One study revealed that 50% of people over 65 years of age living on their own will experience a fall within a 12 month period. Of those falls, 50% will result in injury - 10% serious injury, 5% fractures, and 1% hip fractures. Studies have shown that this does not have to be a reality. In women greater than 65 years of age “normal” decline in mental status was significantly lower in those who had higher levels of physical activity. Even in cognitively impaired elderly people (those with dementia): physical exercise improved strength, physical fitness, functional performance, and cognition (thinking processes). Furthermore, undesirable cognitive-related behaviors declined.

What Are Some Tips for Getting Started Exercising?

Victoria Savage RN

“Nurse Savage” on your side. Owner of Care for Living, LLC.

Well if a person has never been particularly excited by the concept of regular exercise, the road to consistent participation is likely to be a bit of a challenge. If a loved one or friend can participate with them for a while, that’s a good way to get them to start. Just a 15 or 20 minute walk can produce great exercise benefits and the time they spend socializing is an added value as well. When first starting an exercise program, plan a routine that is easy to follow and maintain. Here are some tips to help get started: • If possible, choose an activity the person enjoys. Exercising should be fun.

(208) 473-8254 www.care-forliving.com victorias@care-forliving.com

• Put the exercise routine into a regular schedule. If the person needs reminding, post it on a calendar. • Variety is the spice of life! Make sure to vary exercises so that boredom is not a factor.

• Don't let exercise programs break the bank. Unless the person is going to be using them regularly, avoid buying health club memberships or expensive equipment. • Stick with it. If one exercises regularly it will soon become part of his/her lifestyle and will not only improve one physically, but will also help reduce depression. There really are many choices for senior exercise opportunities and the number available is growing daily. Group programs are offered in a variety of places around the community. A good place to start would be the YMCA; they have many affordable exercise programs specifically designed for seniors.

Remember: It’s never too late to start exercising, and you WILL see the benefits from it, regardless of your age.

alk about welcoming! When I arrived at Trinity Mission Health & Rehab of Midland in Nampa, I was about 15 minutes early for my appointment for an interview with Hannah Anderson, Director of Marketing. I was greeted immediately by a cheery, professional-looking staff member who said Hannah was in a conference but she would let her know I was there. I told her I was quite early for my appointment and didn’t mind waiting. “Well,” she offered, “Would you like some tea, coffee or lemonade while you wait?” I declined, although I had to admit that icy container of fresh lemonade sitting on the pretty hospitality table looked mighty inviting on that hot summer day. I settled into a comfortable overstuffed couch and gazed around the lobby, with its outdoors motif and coordinating artwork, the well-tended refreshment table with starched tablecloth and fresh flowers, the bustling staff members and happy-looking residents – I noticed that the whole scene was accented by bright sunshine through sparkly windows, and I thought what a happy place it is. It was so cozy and yet perfectly professional, just like I would want it to be if I or a loved one were staying there.

Midland has just completed a substantial amount of structural and interior remodeling and updating as well, which has transformed it into a state-of-the-art facility with top-notch rehabilitation services, the clinical staff, and residential amenities that ensure comfort and convenience. During our tour I saw the end result of all the improvements and it is impressive! There are remodeled rehabilitation and exercise rooms with new equipment, cheery dining rooms with homey tables & chairs, private and semi-private residents’ rooms – some resembling hospital rooms and others more like apartment homes. There is a wonderful movie theatre, a nice beauty salon, a pretty courtyard and patio – even a bistro! Family members and friends are welcome day and night, with the focus on making every resident, whether short or long-term, feel totally at home. The medical side of Trinity of Midland is much more complete than I had ever imagined. They are experienced and equipped to handle just about every ailment or condition, from broken bones and hip replacements to cancer and cardiac care, stroke rehabilitation, orthopedic care, pain management, bariatric issues, diabetes management, postsurgical care and intravenous therapy. They even have a secure Alzheimer’s and dementia unit, neurological care and hospice.

I was in the lobby about ten minutes, and during that time SIX (I counted them!) different staff members greeted me, asked if I’d been helped, offered to inform Hannah I was there, and offered refreshments. Trinity Mission Health & I was and still am impressed! Hannah and I met in her office and talked before she gave me a tour of the facility. There has been a tremendous amount of change at the Midland Trinity Mission Health & Rehab facility over the past eighteen months. New leaders Sherrie Nunez, Administrator, and Kristina Holtz, Director of Nursing are ensuring that Midland is a top-notch facility, providing a wide range of skilled medical, nursing and rehabilitation services for both short stay recovery and ongoing long-term care. Staff members do their jobs and do them well. I noticed again and again that the staff seems so happy and in addition to being professional, they are friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable.

Rehabilitation of Midland has just completed a substantial amount of structural and interior remodeling and updating as well, which has transformed it into a state-of-the-art facility with top-notch rehabilitation services, the clinical staff, and residential amenities that ensure comfort and convenience.

Paying for rehabilitative and longterm care can be extremely stressful for families, but Trinity of Midland accepts a large variety of payment programs, including Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, and Private Pay. There is no question that Trinity Midland is a professional, well-equipped facility that cares about their residents’ health, comfort and well-being. It is a beautiful community resource that offers a tremendous value when help is needed the most.

A Heartfelt Testimonial:

"To appreciate the impact of what Synergy has done for me, I must give you a little background of what brought me to needing this wonderful product. Just having turned 70, I made the decision to take off the weight that was starting to affect my health and mobility. Without my doctor’s supervision, I mistakenly chose a self-injected hormone to begin my journey. Over the next year on a regimen that kept me going up and down in weight, I realized that it was not the answer. In October 2011, I was introduced to alkaline water and natural supplements and that was the beginning of my healthy lifestyle journey. Over the next 6 months I lost the balance of 85 pounds that I had “packed” on over the years, bringing my weight to 145. I decided to make a trip to the blood bank and donate blood and six weeks later received a letter from them that brought me to my knees. I had Hepatitis C. At that point I couldn’t imagine where I had contracted it, but after researching, I found that we all have it, and it can lay dormant for years. Consulting a specialist, I was told that it was most likely brought on by the hormone diet I had chosen. He said it was in the beginning stage and he would not prescribe the medicine as it was worse. My next doctor’s appointment showed I would have no long term issues with the diagnosis, thank goodness! Fast forwarding to one month ago, I met a Synergy consultant who shared the product information at a networking event and I was interested in learning more since I had gone through all this transformation was interested in knowing how my heart had fared. I took the non-invasive test and learned that I had the heart of a 120+ year old person and had some blockage in one area. My letter score was an F-, which I knew wasn’t good. I immediately went on the Synergy protocol and was retested in two weeks and had brought my letter score to a C. Over joyed does not describe it. One month later, two days ago, I retested and now test, having the heart of an 85 year old. Of course that still isn’t great and not near what I want to be. I am setting a goal of 35. If I can’t be there in reality at least my heart can." - Paula Heath "I met with Wayne Faw a few months after he came on board as an advertising client. I had been putting off getting the test because, to be honest, I was afraid of what he might find. I had been having some trouble with circulation in my legs and it had finally become bad enough that I had to do something to help out my poor aching body. I was so relieved to see that the test was not the least bit painful. I had conjured up an unrealistic negative image in my mind but the test was pain-free and actually quite pleasant. And I was beyond relieved when I got the results! As it turns out, my heart and veins are working at a 40-year-old's level… not too shabby, since I am 44! My advice to you is, don’t be afraid of the test and don’t tell yourself the test is a fraud. I have been taking the recommended Synergy ProAgrri-9 + for just over a month now and I feel great, have much more energy and have to say that even the taste is great! I’m looking forward to having the test again to see how I am progressing." - Cheryl Richard

What is Personal Development?

W

hy are there only a small percentage of people perusing it? Why are so many of us so afraid of it? Is it because it is so hard? Or because change is slow and taxing? Is it because nobody wants to see what is wrong with them. Or maybe it is too difficult to face all the things that are wrong with us. What about the simple fact that no one wants to believe they need fixing. Or…or…could it just be that the story we tell ourselves and others about personal development is flawed? What if personal development is not about fixing what is wrong with you. What if it is about DISCOVERING THE GREATNESS WITHIN YOU? How many times have you gone through something you think is going to kill you, and then when you are past it you look back in awe that you made it? Did you stop long enough to celebrate the determination that it took to preserver? Did you soak up that moment to realize the strength it took to endure the struggle? Did you see the GREATNESS that you ARE in that situation? What if there is nothing wrong with you? Let’s look at an easy example to resonate with. When you first started riding a bike, it was a struggle I am sure you fell at least once, we all fell, and some of us fell a lot. After practice and long suffering you did it you were riding a bike. And what is one of the greatest most well know clichés… XYZ is like riding a bike you never forget how. Now before you learned to ride that bike, did anyone say there is something wrong with that kid if he can’t ride a bike? Did you hear the murmuring in the neighborhood…we need an intervention; we need to fix that kid. Did someone come and share with you that you were flawed or faulty so we better teach you how to ride this bike so that you can be WHOLE. NO!!! As a kid we just saw how much fun the other kids were having flying around the neighborhood on their bikes. We were willing to forge through a difficult process to acknowledge that we have the capability and the character to acquire the skills needed to ride a bike. We pursued personal development all the time as kids in the desire to have more fun. What kind of fun have you been keeping yourself from? There is nothing wrong with you; you may just be time to pick a new bike to learn how to ride the Your GREATNESS is just waiting to be DISCOVERED!

Ignoring Emotional Dragons T

here’s a story of a little boy, named Billy, who wakes up one morning to find a cute, friendly little dragon sitting on the foot of his bed. When he tells his Mom, she tells him “There’s no such thing as dragons.” Since moms are never wrong, Billy reluctantly begins ignoring the dragon, which causes the dragon to grow and grow until he completely fills Billy’s house! At the end of the story, Billy finally pays attention to the dragon, which causes the dragon to shrink back down to his original size. When he is asked why the dragon got so big, Billy says “I’m not sure, but I think he just wanted to be noticed.” Problems grow when they are ignored. When negative emotions like stress, fear, grief, anxiety, overwhelm, guilt or shame are ignored or pushed aside, they will find ways to pop up and grow until they are noticed. Those stuffed and ignored Emotional Dragons show up as hypertension, heart problems, migraines, stomach problems, cancer, allergies, weight issues, or other severe and not so severe illnesses. Happily, a lifetime of ignoring Emotional Dragons can be released and there are a lot of ways to do that. Try these 4 steps: 1. Acknowledge that there’s a problem: Simply taking a look and acknowledging there’s an Emotional Dragon, will take an immediate charge off of it and allow it to begin shrinking. 2. Try journaling about the Emotional Dragons: This will allow a clearer picture of it/them and open up ideas for releasing it. By Vicki Hurst, 3. Learn how to Tap: Tapping is a simple Certified Level 3 and easily learned technique, used to ProEFT Practitioner release Emotional Dragons by tapping with the fingertips on specific acupuncture points on the face and upper body. 4. Seek counseling or coaching: For the Emotional Dragons that don’t easily go away, counseling or coaching with an expert can bring about dramatic and exciting changes. Ignoring Emotional Dragons and the resulting symptoms doesn’t have to be a way of life. Taking advantage of one or more of the many tools available can create the healthy, happy, abundant life you’ve always wanted!!
