I Pushed the Issue … and I’m Glad I Did! I’m stoked my parents are coming to visit — I haven't seen them in close to seven years! It’s unfortunate my sister’s not coming, and to be honest, I believe she is actually somewhat scared to come. The reason for this is that several years ago, when she came to visit with my parents, something happened while my mom and dad were shopping on base. My dad served in the Marine Corps, so they have base privilege. My sister stayed with me at the store and helped out. After lunch, she came back from the restroom and her left foot was covered in mud. It was a dry, sunny day, so I could not figure out what happened. She said she walked into the planter area and stepped in mud. As she was telling me this, her eyes were very sleepy looking and she started mumbling. To be honest, I really couldn't understand what she was saying. Anyway, I asked her what was wrong, and she said she was just tired. At first I thought she’d taken drugs or something. I sensed something was off, so I called my mom, and she said that my sister was just tired. My mom mentioned she hadn’t sleep much on the plane, so I told my sister she could rest in the back, and she kept rubbing her eyes. She repeated that she was sleepy, so I called my mom again. I wanted to take my sister to the hospital, but my mom reassured me that it had been a while since I’d seen my sister, and that she always mumbles when she’s tired. But I pushed the issue, and said that what I saw did not seem normal. “If you don’t come now, I’ll take her to the hospital,” I insisted. So my parents took my sister to the ER at Straub Hospital. After several hours, they called and said she was in the ICU. It turns out my sister had a brain aneurysm! I was blown

away. In all honesty, I really didn't know what it was at the time, but I’ve learned quite a bit since then, and I think it’s important for everyone to know the signs. If I had known the signs, I wouldn’t have hesitated to call an ambulance. It’s a good thing my intuition was strong. — David Below is some informationI got from the strokeassociation.org website. It’s simple to remember, and it could help you save someone’s life. Use the letters in “FAST” to spot stroke signs and know when to call 9-1-1. FACE DROOPING – Does one side of the face droop, or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the person’s smile uneven or lopsided? ARM WEAKNESS – Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? SPEECH DIFFICULTY – Is the person’s speech slurred? Is he or she unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, like “The sky is blue.” Is the person able to repeat the words correctly? TIME TO CALL 9-1-1 – If someone shows any of these symptoms, EVEN IF THE SYMPTOMS GO AWAY, call 9-1-1 and sa,y “I think this is a stroke” to help get the person to the hospital immediately. Time is important! Don’t delay, and also note the time when the first symptoms appear. Emergency responders will want to know.

The Real Sun Cover is an all-natural NON-GREASY sunscreen. It’s rated SPF 32, but don’t let that fool you. You are getting 97.1% UVA and UVB protection. So many people come in asking for SPF 50, but the jump from 32 to 50 is only a 1% UV protection difference. So get natural with Real Sun Cover. Yes, it’s more expensive, but a little goes a long way — plus we are confident you’ll like it, and offer a 15day money-back guarantee. Oh, and make sure you apply it for 15 minutes before you get into the water. Your skin needs to absorb some of the natural ingredients or it’s going to wash right off. Then you’ll end up complaining to us that it doesn't work. We’ve had so many swear by it, and I’m one of those people. I take meds that make me sensitive to UV rays, and just to let you know, I recently passed my dermo appointment with flying colors. Well, sort of — mydermatologist told me to stop surfing so I can avoid the harsh sun. Haha, I don't think so. — David

Ankle flexibility is critical in surfing, and I was not at all shocked to find that King Kelly Slater has extremely flexible ankles on examination. Think deeper, tighter positions. It’s important to do these eccentric stretches as a warm-up before getting to the static stretches. Static stretching of the calf, including the gastrocnemius and soleus stretches, should always follow eccentric gastrocnemius stretching. Lower your heels down slowly for a good stretch with a slight bounce, and then come back up into a toe rise to repeat the exercise. Surf Boutique Since 1996 The Royalty Rewar d Member Newsletter for May 2017 This is an Instagram post that Matt Biolos did recently. I pasted it below because it’s a cool story. We’ve been selling the Lost Surfboard for about 15 years now. He’s one of the top shapers in the world, and you’ll find his boards all over Europe, Asia, Australia, and of course, in thousands of shops in the US. It seems like he has more pro and amateur team riders than other shapers in the world, and more want to ride for him. Matt Biolos has been to our shop several times over the years, and he is always willing to listen to new ideas. He’s open-minded, and even praises other surfboard models that he thinks are cool. That, along with several other reasons, is why we like to support Lost.

POINT PANIC BODY SURF CONTEST

Hanging down on the dock with dad the other day, I found some inspiration in this little boat hull. My dad has lived onboard his #Californian Troller for 25 years now. My introduction to the ocean was through boats, not boards. Our family has had a boat slip in Dana Point since 1980. We spent 30-40 weekends a year, and much of the summer, onboard. My mother got tired of me mulling around the dock, so at one point, in the summer of '82, she bought me a “Boogie Board.” Off to Doheny I went. It didn't take long to realize that the cool kids stood while riding waves, and by the end of summer, @ghettohouseglassing Paul and I had boards, and were surfing. I spent my summers through high school working on boats in the harbor — mainly underwater cleaning and maintenance. Driving around in my inflatable “dingy,” all the while learning the basics of boat repairs, fishing, sailing, and of course surfing. By high school graduation, in 1987, I had a full-time job working at the Dana Point Shipyard, but one ill fated attempt at shaping a surfboard, in a friends garage, put a swift end to all that, and within a month, I was working for @herbiefletcher Surfshop, now @catalyst_sc. it will be 30 straight years at that location for me, in June. I never would have had an opportunity for this lifestyle without my parents passion for being on the water. And I owe it all to them.

He’s working with so many powerhouse people in the surf industry, but he still calls and emails us personally. As a matter of fact, that is why we carry the Carbon Wrap boards. Last year he direct-messaged us on Instagram and asked us to call him. He said we needed to test-ride the technology, and we’d be hooked. Well, we did — and we are definitely hooked. According to Matt, the flex is the same feel that the pros are getting from their super-light glass boards, but with more strength than a regular Poly. We are stoked on them, and over 80% of customers ordered a second board. I’ve been riding mine since November, and I usually surf four times a week. I’m stoked to say I’ve been surfing a lot of country this year. I think it’s been over 10 years since I’ve surfed this much country, but the board is in very good condition. And a friend of mine who’s been

surfing with me is impressed that his board is still in very good condition, with hardly any pressure. I’m 185 lb., and he’s about 195. Sorry, I got a little carried away with what I originally wanted to talk about. Check out Matt’s short story below. — David
