President’s Message

Building a better future for animals In July, we celebrated our 130th birthday. What most impresses me about the Hawaiian Humane Society is its ability to continually re-evaluate and reinvent itself in order to be a dynamic agent for change. When we were organized in 1883, we had no enforcement powers. Instead we worked collaboratively with a police officer designated to fight cruelty with us. It was at this time that we also pledged our

commitment to child protection. We once had branches on the neighbor islands. Today, all island humane societies are completely independent. Sheltering did not become a part of the Humane Society’s work until well in the 1900s when Victoria Ward donated a small parcel of land in Kakaako. Due to the recent changes to countycontracted animal services, we have Pamela Burns President and CEO

Online revolution ignites activism for animals When you mention social media, you probably get a variety of reactions. Some love it. Some hate it. If the animals could vote, they’d tell you they love it and here’s why: The online revolution has been the single most valuable development in organizing Hawaii’s animal lovers. Case in point: This past 4th of July weekend, we found new families for more than 200 homeless animals. That’s an unprecedented victory for a single weekend. Our massive outreach was all driven through the Internet.

The Humane Society relaunched its website last year and since then more than 40,000 visitors a month stop by to check out our upcoming news and events, view animals for adoption and look for missing pets. It used to be if our stories didn’t make the nightly news, the dailies or the radio, the animals had no voice. Today, social media is changing the landscape of opportunity for

animals. News from our Moiliili campus broadcasts daily. From Twitter to Instagram to Yelp, social media is changing the way we educate and reach out to the community. It is our most powerful podium and it’s making a huge impact. We hope you’ll join our social media revolution for the animals.

In the heat of the courtroom drama of the Waimanalo puppy mill case, we kept nearly 14,000 people up-to-date with breaking news via Facebook. And nearly 3,500 people are talking about and sharing our posts at any given time of day. When we loaded our footage of the rescue of more than 40 Pomeranians in June to our YouTube channel, more than 4,000 tuned in and viewers got to see what we saw, unedited, within hours of the rescue. Community advertising sites such as Ebay classifieds and Craigslist are giving us an opportunity to advocate for adoption right next to sellers of puppies, as well as offering us a forum to educate the public on how to find purebred puppies responsibly.

welfare organization to the fullest extent of our resources. While services and offerings will change over time, one thing has remained constant since 1883; education and advocacy continue to be the cornerstone of our mission. They drive our ambitions for next generations of people and animals to come.

Owner convicted for failing to provide veterinary care It’s a story that almost seems too terrible to be true. The Humane Society received a call from Kahala Pet Clinic and our investigation revealed that the owner had taken medical care into his own hands. The situation started when the dog’s leg had been badly broken and the owner attempted to splint the leg with popsicles sticks and ended with

the owner amputating the dog’s leg himself. Humane Society’s Director of Operations Keoni Vaughn and Chief Veterinarian Aleisha Swartz served as key witnesses in the case and the pet owner was sentenced to a year of probation and 60 days in jail. Often it takes great effort that happen under just the right

circumstances to ensure justice for animals. In this case, the intervention by a caring neighbor who brought the dog to an animal clinic launched a cruelty case that ended in a jury convicting the pet owner. The Humane Society investigates all cruelty concerns and takes tips at 356-2250.

Society launches “Planned Pethood” campaign The Humane Society has launched a campaign to support prospective pet owners who are considering getting their next pet. The Society’s education team works closely with youth, adults and families from all walks of life. Many are unaware of what’s needed to make a thoughtful decision about adding a pet to the family. The campaign includes an online “Planned Pethood 101 Quiz” on the Society’s website, posters island-wide and outreach through schools and organizations to increase awareness about all the hallmarks of great decision making when seeking your next furry family member. The quiz encompasses a wide variety of concerns from the cost of care, health and psychological needs, how to

find a responsible breeder, pets as gifts and more. Visit HawaiianHumane.org to take the quiz and share it with your friends and family.

Why we support

PetWalk 2013

We strongly believe in our philosophy to Think Adoption First. We work hard to increase the number of pets adopted into loving homes, which is why we are so proud to partner with the Hawaiian Humane Society. Every pet deserves a loving family and a place to call home.

– Chris Leideritz District Manager for Petco

Fairmont Specialty and its employees strongly support the Hawaii Humane Society because we know they make a difference in the lives of animals. We appreciate and have experienced the value of their efforts, whether it be reuniting owners and their pets or creating new human-animal bonds. PetWalk will give you an opportunity to meet the very special people who serve the people and pets of Oahu.

– Lloyd Chaffin Executive Vice President Hawaii Regional Office for Fairmont Specialty

Many of our employees’ families include precious pets of all kinds and we know that caring for animals is both a privilege and responsibility, similar to Matson’s service to Hawaii’s community. As a PetWalk sponsor, we celebrate loved, loyal and obedient pets – and their owners. Mahalo to the Hawaiian Humane Society!

The ohana at Mike McKenna’s Windward Ford looks forward to PetWalk every year and can’t wait to put our best paw forward on October 6. It’s such a fun event for pets and their families, and we love helping to support and foster the humananimal bond. – Mike McKenna

Microchip Madness. Thank you to all the animal clinics that participated in Microchip Madness and their efforts to educate the public about pet identification and help to reunite lost pets and owners.

Bone appétit. A big special thanks to Kiki’s After Hours, Champions Bar & Grill, The Grove, Chiko’s Tavern, and Anna O’Brien’s for hosting fundraisers for the animals. Cupcakes & canines. Kaydence Pakjake celebrated her 9th birthday at the Society and asked that her friends and family make donations to the animals in lieu of gifts. She and her guests made dog biscuit lei and cat puzzle toys as part of the festivities. Budding animal activist. Isabel de Armes held a Pet Drive to collect wish list items and raised $2,000 in donations.

Teens rally for the animals. A round of applause goes to all our Teens4Animals graduates who dedicated two weeks of their summer to learning more about humane values and training to be the next generation of animal activists. Mr. Fixit. Mahalo to the City Mill ohana, and their dog Fixit, for donating to the animals through their Facebook contest. Hooray for Hollywoof. And the award goes to Jim Nabors and Stan Cadwallader for leading the Tuxes 2014 charge as co-chairs. Best supporting roles go to Ginny Tiu, Anna Meng and Naomi Loewe for spearheading table sales, auctions and theme & décor respectively. Touching tribute. Our gratitude to Valerie Trotter who acknowledges the Humane Society as a favorite charity of her late husband. Her book “A Tribute to Fred Trotter: Steward of the Land, Advocate of the People” was recently published. For he’s a jolly good fellow. At Steve Sofos’ 60th birthday party, guests helped celebrate by making a donation to the Humane Society in lieu of gifts.
