in Rome’s Piazza di Spagna. A portion of what today is the Hassler was actually once her home. Angelica was highly educated, extraordinarily talented as an artist, intelligent and full of charm. She was also fashionable, with Europe’s most important figures visiting to admire her art, strictly faithful to the principle of beauty. Her home gathered illustrious names such as Cardinal Spina, the painter Hackert, the engraver Volpato, Antonio Canova and Goethe, with whom the painter shared a special relationship.

space to contain his vast interior world before transferring it to canvas. In his studio, you find the easel, his paints, his smock lying over a chair and his last, unfinished work. They are all still there. It is hard not to imagine him still standing at that easel. Above you, the skylight lets in light from that very terrace which the artist so often used for inspiration. From this high up, the view is indeed extraordinary, a breath-taking panorama, as you can well imagine, across the whole city. Professor Picozza, president of the foundation that was created in 1986 at the wish of Isabella Far de Chirico, Giorgio’s widow, explains that they have several major objectives: to gather and preserve documentation pertaining to the maestro’s complete works; the creation of an archive of all original works in order to offset the phenomenon of forgery; the setting up of scholarships; the promotion of exhibitions and conventions; the publication of de Chirico’s writings and since 2002, a magazine
