Surprisingly, people are often unaware of our facilities, so we delve a little deeper into the history of this legendary leisure centre. began in 1948 with the formation of the Welwyn Garden City Development Corporation. All About Running

With Becca Hayden and Daniel Sivell Do you want to vary your cardio routine because you find yourself doing the same routine in the gym day in day out? Whilst the treadmill can be an excellent training tool for both beginners and advanced alike, many people are now ditching the treadmill fora good old fashioned run outdoors. So why is this and what is the difference between to two? The treadmill is a stationary piece of equipment with a moving bel underneath which does a lot of the work for you. There is no wind resistance against you, no uneven under footing and you will not be affected by the elements. This is good for injury recovery as it is easier on your joints than on the road. Unlike the treadmill when running outside you will have to use your legs to a higher degree to propel yourself forward against both the resistance of the wind and the uneven road or terrain. Due to this you will work much harder, burning more calories. With regular runs you will increase your heart and lung capacity, decrease blood pressure and release stress. You are able to vary your workout to include hill training and interval training strengthening your legs, improving endurance, toning and stripping body fat as you progress.

10

Every runner begins with their first step, once you have done yours you will soon realise nothing beats the fresh air, wind in your face and the freedom of being outdoors‌..not even the treadmill! How do you start outdoor running? Depending on your current level of fitness you can start by doing a 20-30 minute timed run or walk to see how you get on, if you have to stop a few times to take a breather you can use this as a target to try not to stop next time. Interval training is another good training method, try running or walking fast for 1 minute then jog or slow walk for a further minute repeating this process over & over again. Over time you can increase the running intervals and decrease the walking / recovery intervals. This will help you to become faster and is a good way to strip down body fat. Staying Motivated Many beginners new to running often struggle to stay motivated, review your progress regularly, did you picture your

All About Running self here and now last month or even last year? Set yourself goals, enter a 5k race to help with your training and have something to aim for. Keep your runs fresh, outdoor running gives you the freedom that you wouldn’t have on a treadmill In the gym, so try a new route, run in a new area or do your regular run in reverse. Also reward yourself, treat yourself to that new training top or pair of running shoes. What’s the right gear and nutrition advice? Having the right clothing and shoes is very important as you start to take your runs more seriously. Invest in a good brand sock as these will help stop blistering and will not slip or rub when you’re wearing shoes, also most socks will be sweat proof to help keep feet dry. Try to avoid cotton clothing especially in the hotter months as cotton absorbs water and sweat and will make the run harder as it will weigh you down, breathable clothing is best and ladies wear a sports bra. Ensuring you have the right shoes for your feet is vital, a trip to a sports shop is worthwhile and many good retailers will now offer a gait analysis check.

When it comes to nutrition it is important that you don’t have a big meal right before going out running as it will stay in your system and make you feel uncomfortable. It is best the keep hydrated throughout the day and then drink at least 1-2 hours before your run. Drinking after your run is just as important to ensure you replace any fluids lost through sweating. It is best is to take small sips rather than big gulps. Ensure you are consuming a good balanced healthy diet including a small protein and carb snack pre and post run will help you reach your fitness goals in no time. Daniel worked for Sweatshop as a running coach and Becca is an experienced endurance athlete for Herts & Ware athletics club. They both are currently Fitness Instructors at Gosling Sports Park. Deadlifts, Not Just For Men!

With Alex Scholes The deadlift is one of the most beneficial exercises you can perform in the gym. Done correctly it is a fantastic exercise to improve your glutes, hamstring and lower back strength which can also help to dramatically improve posture. Studies have also shown that heavy deadlifting on a regular basis can lead to an increase in muscle mass for the whole body due to the release of more testosterone and growth hormone into the body. However, it is probably the most common badly performed exercise and when done badly can lead to serious injury. The most common problem being that people seem to think all they need to do is move the weight from point A (the floor) to point B (standing) with no regard for form. Deadlift Tips 1. Approach the bar with feet shoulder width apart and toes underneath the bar. Shoulders should be directly over the bar as it almost touches your shins.

initiated by the hips and hamstrings not the lower back. Take the tension in your hamstrings and begin to drive your hips forward whilst standing up at the same time. 6. Your torso and hips should be moving at the same time, not one then the other. Think about ‘driving’ the weight up rather than ‘pulling’ it from the floor. 7. The spine should stay straight for the whole lift, until you lockout at the top. Do not hyperextend at the top (leaning backwards massively)

2. You should be lifting from mid-shin height so if the weight is lower you may need to rest the weight on some blocks or plates to raise it up.

8. Lower the bar throughout the same range of movement, taking care to maintain a straight back throughout.

3. Grab the bar with an overhand grip (this may change as the weight gets heavier) just outside of your knees.

Alex is a Personal Trainer at Gosling, you can view his blog and contact him at: www.alexscholespt.com

4. Take a deep breath, hold it in whilst squeezing your abs. Try to push your chest out too to help keep your spine straight. 5. Think about the movement being Follow us on Twitter: @goslingleisure | Facebook: /GoslingSportsPark

How Massage Supports Your Lymphatic System by Stacy Chew PT – Massage – Nutrition

What is the Lymphatic system and what does it do? The Lymphatic system is a complex network of lymph nodes, lymphatic ducts, lymphoid organs, and lymphatic vessels (capillaries). One of its primary functions is to collect fluid and plasma proteins that have leaked into the body’s tissues and returns them to the cardiovascular system as Lymph. Another very important job is producing and distributing lymphocytes which are immune cells that help the body fight infection and disease. Lymphatic Capillaries • These collect the lymph fluid from blood capillaries and space between tissue cells. Once they collect the lymph fluid they transport it to larger lymphatic vessels, which lie hundreds of lymph nodes. Lymph Nodes • These are tiny organs that cleanse the fluid of foreign particles, viruses, and bacteria. It then continues its journey through progressively larger vessels. From the larger vessels, cleansed lymph drains in to the Lymphatic ducts in the chest. Lymphatic ducts • Once the cleansed lymph has been drained in to the lymphatic ducts, its then realised in to the large veins of the chest. Lymphoid Organs • These Organs in clued lymph nodes, spleen, thymus gland, tonsils and Peyer patches of the intestine. All of these organs are critical to the body’s immune system. The Lymphatic system is not pressurised in the same way as the cardiovascular system, as there is no pump comparable to the Heart. Thus, the circulation of lymph relies heavily on skeletal muscle contraction and body movement. However not everyone’s system is very efficient, so having regular sports Massage can help with the regulation of the lymph flow. To book a Sports Massage with Stacy and to discuss the benefits of supporting your Lymphatic system, contact Stacy on SCPT@live.co.uk or 07506 686882

Clocking In

With Michael Sims In this issue of Gosling we meet Mike Sims. Mike joined our Front of House team 6 months ago and has recently moved to our Operations team. He is now occupying (successfully) a Duty Manager role, and takes control of the helm at some difficult times. Mike admits some secrets in this article! Position Duty Manager Length of Service 6 months Favourite Sport Bit of an all round extreme sport fan, though my current favourite would have to be downhill mountain biking! Best part about working for Gosling Sports Park? The atmosphere created by the staff and customers makes it a great place to work. Something your colleagues don’t know about you? Quite a big animal lover, especially like reptiles. Ever since I got my first boa constrictor (which was bigger than me!) Most dangerous thing you have ever done? I’ve done a few dangerous and stupid things over the years.

26

Although the scariest was when me and a friend got lost down an abandoned iron mine in Yorkshire and our torches died. Motivation? To be honest there isn’t really one specific motivation other than to better myself and keep fit. Top of the bucket list? One thing I would love to achieve is to B.A.S.E jump wearing a wingsuit. Just to experience the feeling of flying would be amazing. Lastly, guilty pleasure? I would have to say my guilty pleasure is cookies and Reece’s Peanut Butter Cups. Just can’t get enough of them!
