HARRIS ACADEMY MORDEN HARRIS MESSENGER Summer 2016

COURAGE, CHALLENGE, SUCCESS

Message from THE Principal The summer term has finally drawn to an end and another year at Harris Morden goes into the history books. We have had a fabulous year and the hard work and dedication of all of our staff has ensured every child has had magnificent opportunities to learn, develop and experience new things. Secondary school is a journey and we work tirelessly to make this journey as interesting and rewarding as possible. Staff provide interesting lessons, additional clubs and lead many exciting trips or host events. Students this year have visited Museums in London, visited Hampton Court, Tate Modern, Christies Auction House, the Bank of England to name just a few.

I am sure you will be amazed by all the opportunities provided to the students and when you visit us you will see this in reality as you walk the corridors and visit the students in lessons. We look forward to another fabulous year at Harris Academy Morden. Best wishes Lee Mallin Principal

In addition, plans and deposits are in place for our 2nd Ski Trip to Switzerland and Spain in 2017! Students at Harris Morden have every opportunity to sample a range of new skills, locations and events. The only thing that will stop them is themselves. As parents please push your child to get the most out of all that we can offer at Harris Academy Morden. As I write this piece, I am able to fully reflect upon our journey. This year has seen the Academy achieve the highest GCSE outcomes in our history. The results are unbelievable and there is a significant chance they will place the Academy in the top 5% of schools nationally. Our score this year is +0.86. This is a fantastic achievement as only 17 schools across the entire country achieved a score of +1.0 last year. We hope you enjoy reading the rest our Harris Messenger. We use this as our paper prospectus as it gives a true insight into the day to day activities and life of our Academy.

ART & DESIGN It's been a very busy and productive end to the year here in the Art department. All the students have been working very hard and have created so much great work. Year 7 students have been working on the theme of portraits and the human form. This has resulted in fantastic self-portraits made with a variety of materials to create work that is expressive and individual. Year 8 have made some amazing sculptures based on animals, insects and natural forms. Using recycled newspaper and tissue paper, the students have created many kinds of forms and effects within these works. We look forward to having them on display around the school, which may soon look more like a zoo!

Year 7 - Portraits and the Human Form

Year 9 have been super busy finishing off their first year of GCSE, and have done themselves proud. They have created work that is very individual and intelligent. Sarah the Art technician has been busy displaying some of this brilliant work based on natural forms. Look out for this work in the Art corridors and stairways as it truly is a sight to behold! Finally, Year 10 have finished the year completing their coursework in preparation for their exams next year. Most of this work has been done within their sketchbooks and therefore won't be on display, but rest assured, it looks very good indeed!

GCSE Art & DT exhibition HamptoncourtPAlace

Harris Academy Morden were excited to create the amazing annual G.C.S.E Art/DT exhibition! Offering a private view to the year 11 students and their parents. The exhibition showcased a lot of talent, hard work and dedication to the Art G.C.S.E course. The majority of the work on display was the Final Piece of each student’s exam Unit. One of the most talked about pieces of the show was Ben Blenkinsop’s Desk. Parents, students and teachers alike were drawn to the desk, as it was something “a little unusual” and “intriguing”. Keira Barnes “two faced Frame” portrayed how people can be viewed on the outside, but how they feel on the inside. Students in the lower years are excited as to the possibility of what they can achieve and directions they can take in Year 11!

Physical Education Football

Athletics

Well done to the Year 10 football team who made it to the Merton borough final against Rutlish. After a gruelling match with some great performances from Michaelangelo Y5, Kye R6 and Malik Y7, unfortunately the boys had to settle for runners up.

This term has seen a number of students continue their preparations for competition at the numerous athletics meets this year. Meet 1, Merton Borough Athletics at Sutton arena saw a large number of our students come away with medals. In total we achieved 15 medals, 6 gold, 3 silver, 6 bronze which included the year 10 boys relay team. Overall we placed 2nd in the mixed competition. The Harris Federation heats saw a number of students compete for their chance to make it through to the Harris Federation sports day finals on 14th July. Congratulations to Maxwell Y3, Jay R3, Dylan Y7, Landino B5, Tianna Y1 and the year 10 boys relay team who all qualified for the finals.

Rounders The rounders season has been positive this year with lots of new players ranging from year 7-10 coming to training on a weekly basis in preparation for the borough tournaments. The year 10 girls’ team showed dedication and determination despite some tough competition and the year 9 girl’s team managed to secure 3rd place.

Cricket We have had a great turn out this term at cricket club and managed to get a mixed year 7-10 team together to play a friendly fixture against Harris Academy Merton. 2 games were played and both games were won significantly. Well done to Nabeel R5 who managed to score 50 not out and Sanjay Y5 who captained very well and led from the front.

SPORTS DAY 2016 Sports Day 2016 was a successful day with a large number of students signing up for a range of events. In the morning field competitors arrived to compete and they did not disappoint. We had some impressive high jumpers who battled it out for the top spot and an impressive record from Rawle who managed to jump a massive 1.84m. The long jumpers fought hard and we had many standing results over 2.25m. The shot putt and discus competitions were tough, with some good throws from Amanda, Tommy and Landino. After break the track events commenced with the whole school in attendance. It was a great atmosphere with some brilliant spectator banners of support for their athletes. The Red faculty organised a charity face painting stool which helped to increase the support for each faculty and raise some money for their charity. The Yellow faculty did brilliantly in the relays winning most of the races but the Blues performed well in the individual races. The Reds fought hard but in the end could only achieve 3rd place with Yellows being piped to the post by the Blues and having to settle for 2nd place overall. The Blue faculty remain sports day champions and will try to defend their title again next year!

Speed-chess Tournament The last week of Summer 1 occupied a high premium slot in the Year 7 and 8’s diary in which the speed-chess-doubles tournament took place on the big board. Players were given 10 minutes to accumulate as many points as possible whilst having only ten seconds in between each move. Congratulations to the winners Hassan B. and Piere B. who beat Adrian S. and Wiktor C. in the final after making their way through a field of 28 players.

‘During AEE week we went for an adventure to Ashdown Forest. We walked and walked and walked until we could walk no more – then we walked some more.’ 17 Students in Year 9 had to plan their own routes using a real paper map, compass and a bit of string. Students were completely self-sufficient during this trip; they had to carry all their food and camping equipment in a giant backpack. ‘All went well until the heavens opened and dumped a year’s worth of rain on us, just as we were preparing dinner, we had our first taste of ‘rain-water-infused paste’ not to be recommended! ‘ Students used this adventure to prepare for their Assessed Expedition in the Box Hill area at the end of September! Good Luck to all those involved.

MERTON SCHOOL SPORT PARTNERSHIP The summer term is one of the busiest terms for the Merton School Sport Partnership. The Academy has been very accommodating with letting the Partnership use their sports facilities for primary festivals and competitions. The Partnership has delivered a Multi Sports Festival, a Gifted and Talented Festival, a Sky Sports Leadership Festival, and the Mitcham and Morden Cluster Primary Rounders Competition. Most of these events consisted of over 14 primary schools attending from across the borough. The Academy’s Year 8/9 Sports Leaders were used at all these events, either by officiating or coaching various sports activities from inclusive games to team building exercises. The Sports Leaders have been excellent, primary teachers that attended these events have commented on how enthusiastic and mature the leaders were towards the younger pupils which made the children’s experience very enjoyable. Ian Rose, a Judo Paralympian silver medallist,

attended the Sky Sports Leadership Day as a guest speaker and commented on how well the Sports Leaders presented themselves and what great role models they were towards the younger students. The Partnership has contributed to the Academy’s enrichment programme. Sophie Allan, a Partnership coach, has continued to deliver the popular table tennis club and started a girls lacrosse club which is proving to be a success, attracting 15 girls each week. Becky Forshaw, Morden Sports Co-ordinator, delivered a KS3/4 rounders club which was highly attended by both boys and girls. Tom Gardner, Deputy Partnership Director, delivered a 6 week Football Intervention Programme for those pupils that require a more active learning Sky Sports Leadership Day with Ian Rose - Judo Paralympian environment. Tom saw an improvement in the student’s behaviour and attitude towards each other and hopes they will continue in this manner whilst studying in the classroom. The Partnership has aided the Academy with various athletics events this term. Three members of staff assisted at the Academy Sports Day by overseeing the shot put, discus and relays. Two members of staff assisted at the Academy’s Federation Sports Day by officiating the track and field events. The Partnership team also helped during AEE week by providing alternative sports activities for those pupils on site.
