The Llibre Vermell de Montserrat (Red Book of Montserrat) is a 14thcentury manuscript compiled at the monastery of Montserrat in Catalonia. It is named for the red binding into which the collection was placed in the 19th century. These devotional texts containing late medieval songs and dances were written in Catalan, Occitan and Latin for pilgrims who needed something appropriately 'chaste and pious' for singing and dancing. This beautiful live recording, made at the Santa Maria del Pi church in Barcelona, is Jordi Savall's well deserved tribute to one of the most famous manuscripts of ancient music. Included as a bonus is a DVD of the live concert performance (PAL format).

Majestic and deeply moving, Mahler's Symphony No.2 is one of the great monuments of symphonic music from the late nineteenth century and one of the composer's most popular works. It is therefore fitting that JeanClaude Casadesus, a living-legend of conducting, should chose this piece to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Orchestre National de Lille. Recorded at the Auditorium du Nouveau Siècle in November 2015, this performance is a testimony to the maestro's love of this great composer.

It was the Russian winter, with its contemplative melancholy and picturesque excitement, that inspired Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.1 of 1866. Featuring a genuine folk song in its rousing finale, it is the composer's earliest notable work. Tchaikovsky was also well-read and cosmopolitan, and his sophistication shines through in the rarely recorded symphonic fantasia on Shakespeare’s Tempest. This work composed in 1873 was performed with great success at the Paris Universal Exposition in 1878. Pablo Heras-Casado leads the New York-based Orchestra of St. Luke's, one of America’s most versatile and distinguished orchestras, in splendid performances of these two Russian masterpieces.

CLASSICAL RED Price Code: CD18 $18.98

Russian pianist Alexander Melnikov presents an all-Prokofiev recital featuring three of the composer's piano sonatas. Piano Sonata No.2 was dedicated to the memory of a friend and fellow student at the St. Petersburg Conservatory who committed suicide. It is paired here with Piano Sonatas Nos.6 and 8, the first and third of his three "War Sonatas." These works were among eight compositions banned by the "Zhdanov Decree" in 1948, which claimed that certain works by composers such as Shostakovich and Khachaturian renounced the "basic principles of classical music." Alexander Melnikov returns in January 2017 performing with acclaimed cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras in select concert halls across North America. The London Telegraph says that the cello and piano duo “combine a spectrum of tonal warmth with an exhilarating thrust of momentum” and the Guardian calls their partnership ”an ideal match: both are sensitive, responsive chamber musicians, alert to color, never excessive."

At the end of the 18th century, France and Germany developed a passion for harp music. The instrument became commonplace in concerts, drawing rooms and was a featured instrument in many masterpieces. Queen Marie-Antoinette regularly played the pianoforte and the harp, and the instrument became a symbol of the last two decades of the French court. On this release, conductor William Christie and harpist Xavier de Maistre have crafted a program of the most evocative works of this golden age of the harp. These compositions by Haydn, Krumpholtz and Hermann are inseparable from the image of the Queen of France and her elegant and opulent lifestyle.

This very special Orange Mountain recording showcases three American composers: a Minimalist, a post-Minimalist and a rock star. The longtime friendship between Mike Mills of REM and violinist Robert McDuffie was the starting point for Mills’s 2016 Concerto for Violin, Rock Band, and String Orchestra — his first work for the concert hall after a long career as a member of the successful rock band. The piece is cast in six movements and features the sweeping melodies that were a hallmark of Mills’s work with REM. The result is a true collaboration of gifted musical peers. The recording is rounded out by a fresh new interpretation of John Adams’s Road Movies for violin and piano with McDuffie accompanied by pianist Elizabeth Pridgen and a new recording of Philip Glass’s Symphony No.3 for strings featuring the MCS Ensemble led by Ward Stare.

The inspiration for Ludovico Einaudi's I Giorni was a 12th-century folk song from Mali about a hippopotamus who was cherished by the residents of a nearby village but killed by a hunter. "The song," writes Einaudi in his succinct liner note, "is sung as a lament for the death of a king or a great person or for the loss of a loved one." The result is a tender & introspective set of fourteen piano pieces. This work was written after hearing the kora playing of Toumani Diabate whilst traveling in Mali. Originally released in 2008, I Giorni is available now as a 2 LP 180g vinyl edition.

Carlo Maria Giulini was revered as both an opera and orchestra conductor. When the founder of the Philharmonia Orchestra, Walter Legge invited Giulini to London to conduct 'his' orchestra, Giulini proceeded to demystify Mahler's respectful reorchestration of Schumann’s Symphony No.3. He then delved into a young Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.2 which juxtaposed the naturalness of the former plus the virtuosity of the latter exploring the magic of the sound of the horn.

Orange Mountain is pleased to announce the reissue of Philip Glass's 1998 score to the 1931 film Dracula starring Bela Lugosi. For his new score, Philip Glass tapped the Kronos Quartet and wrote specifically for them. In the late-1990s, Universal Pictures approached composer Philip Glass to compose a new score for one of its classic monster movies. Glass chose to compose a score for Tod Browning's 1931 Dracula because it never had its own original score. He composed the work for string quartet to evoke an ancient sound. Now almost 20 years later, Glass and Kronos continue to perform the music live-to-film around the world. Glass's music gave Dracula new life, perhaps adding something that had been missing before there was music: structure and pacing and above all a new sense of mystery and soul.

SOUNDTRACK RED Price Code: CD19 $19.98

This recording from Orange Mountain Music features music by Philip Glass written for a 2016 Broadway production of Arthur Miller's play The Crucible. Miller's works are staples of American literature. He wrote The Crucible in the early 1950s in response to McCarthyism, where modernday witch trials were played out in a search to root out Communist elements in American society. Glass’s score features forty minutes of music for violin and cello, but only half of that was used in the production. This album offers the complete original music, performed by violinist Miranda Cuckson and cellist Jeffrey Zeigler. It has been speculated that the combination of violin and cello plays on the duality that is ubiquitous in The Crucible... light versus dark, good versus evil and righteousness versus injustice.
