NEW RELEASE HIGHLIGHTS Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner and Herbie Hancock all cited legendary jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal as one of their most important inspirations. Renowned for his exquisite touch and mercurial improvisations, Jamal has been sharing his unique voice with jazz lovers around the world for seven amazing decades. This month, Jazz Village presents Jamal's latest recording, entitled Marseille. The album is both a musical love letter to the iconic French city and a very personal expression of the sincere and long-standing mutual admiration that has existed between the American artist and French audiences. Jamal's previous albums, including Blue Moon and Saturday Morning, are among Jazz Village's best selling titles. Also new in jazz, the Edition label offers exciting releases from Finnish trumpeter Verneri Pohjola, British saxophonist Denys Baptiste and multi-instrumentalist Django Bates. This month's key classical titles feature a wealth of superstar soloists and ensembles. On harmonia mundi, acclaimed British choir ORA performs music of Thomas Tallis, violinist Isabelle Faust and pianist Alexander Melnikov join the Salagon Quartet in a recital of Frank and Chausson and The Heath Quartet perform the complete quartets of Bela Bartók. On Hyperion, virtuoso pianist Marc-André Hamelin plays Morton Feldman's extraordinary For Bunita Marcus and The Westminster Cathedral Choir sings John Sheppard's Renaissance masterpiece Media Vita. Tenor Ian Bostridge adds a third volume to his Schubert song series for Wigmore Hall Live and baritone Stephan Genz sings Schubert's Schwanengesang in a new recital for Aparté. Rounding out the month, Quatuor Debussy takes us on a colorful sonic journey with world première recordings of works by iconoclastic American composer Marc Mellits on the Evidence Classics label.

The ART OF PLAYING THE VIOLIN Violinist Gottfried von der Goltz is accompanied by musicians from the Freiburger Barockorchester on an album of music by Francesco Geminiani that centers around the composer's educational treatise The Art of Playing on the Violin. It features both performances of musical examples cited in the book as well as a selection of Sonatas with Continuo. With Geminiani, virtuosity is not an end unto itself – it merely serves as a vehicle to express the music's inherent drama and emotion. A TOUCHING Tribute to a BELOVED TEACHER The Britten Oboe Quartet makes its recording début with a program of the group's core repertory. It naturally includes Mozart's great Oboe Quartet and Britten’s own Phantasy, but also two pieces that have a special resonance for the distinguished oboist Nicholas Daniel. The works were commissioned and premiered by Janet Craxton (1929-81), his beloved teacher and inspiration, and her London Oboe Quartet. Wilhelm Furtwängler made 112 live concert recordings.
