Alexander Melnikov plays Prokofiev

Russian pianist Alexander Melnikov presents an all-Prokofiev recital featuring three of the composer's piano sonatas. Piano Sonata No.2 was dedicated to the memory of a friend and fellow student at the St. Petersburg Conservatory who committed suicide. It is paired here with Piano Sonatas Nos.6 and 8 — the first and third of his three "War Sonatas." These works were among eight compositions banned by the "Zhdanov Decree" in 1948, which claimed that certain works by composers such as Shostakovich and Khachaturian renounced the "basic principles of classical music." Llibre Vermell de Montserrat The Llibre Vermell de Montserrat (Red Book of Montserrat) is a 14th-century manuscript compiled at the monastery of Montserrat in Catalonia. It is named for the red binding into which the collection was placed in the 19th century. These devotional texts containing late medieval songs and dances were written in Catalan, Occitan and Latin for pilgrims who needed something appropriately 'chaste and pious' for singing and dancing. This beautiful live recording, made at the Santa Maria del Pi church in Barcelona, is Jordi Savall's well deserved tribute to one of the most famous manuscripts of ancient music. In 1777, Dutch flautist Ferdinand De Jean commissioned Mozart to compose four flute quartets and three flute concerti. The composer only completed two of the concerti — the Flute Concerto No.1 and the Andante for Flute & Orchestra. In 1778, flautist Adrien-Louis de Bonnière commissioned a work for himself and his daughter who played the harp. Mozart's Concerto for Flute and Harp is one of the most popular works of classical music and his only work featuring harp. Nearly 250 years after their composition, flautist Philippe Bernold and harpist Emmanuel Ceysson offer fresh performances of these enduring works.

Between the early Middle Ages and the thirteenth century, the great abbeys were key artistic centers and focal points of musical creation. From Santiago de Compostela to Saint-Denis, from Royaumont to Fontevraud by way of Mont Saint-Michel, the walls of these imposing edifices echoed with the finest voices in the medieval West. This anthology explores eight centuries of sacred music as it was celebrated in the great monastic houses of Europe.

In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the glorious châteaux of the Loire Valley were vacation homes of kings and showcases for French cultural and musical life. Today, the châteaux are historic landmarks and permanent symbols of French Renaissance splendor. They continue to resound with music of the period, thanks to the many artists that have rediscovered this repertory. This program is an evocation of the pleasures, festivities, hunts and dances that graced the days and nights of the court of France, and of the 'joyous life' that reigned there for decades.

Westminster Abbey, the church at which all English monarchs have been crowned since 1066, is one of the great musical centers of the western world. Over the centuries, countless organists, singers and composers have been closely associated with the abbey, which still plays a preponderant role in the musical and cultural life of the realm. From Orlando Gibbons to Benjamin Britten, this anthology presents a musical tour of the prestigious monument, its cloisters and the grandiose abbey church itself.

From the Arab conquest to the twenty-first century, Granada has been at the center of Spanish musical life. The Alhambra Palace and its gardens, subjects of musical fantasies of all kinds, are emblematic of that intense period of creativity. These architectural and cultural landmarks were a source of fascination shared by those who actually visited (Isaac Albéniz, Joaquín Turina) and those who went there in their imagination (Manuel de Falla, Claude Debussy). From the Puerta del Vino to the Albaicín by way of the Palacio de Generalife, this selection invites you to discover a thousand years of musical magic.

An enthusiastic amateur flautist, Frederick the Great always gave music a key place in his daily schedule. The Emperor's love of music can be seen in the musical ornaments omnipresent in the decoration of his palace at Sanssouci, an incomparable Rococo jewel. Works by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and his father Johann Sebastian as well as Johann Gottlieb Graun and the King of Prussia himself are the central focus of this program. They vividly evoke the passion for musical creativity that was an essential part of life at Sanssouci.

Bruckner Symphony No.7 Orchestre des Champs-Élysées, Philippe Herreweghe harmonia mundi • HMA 1951857 RED Price Code: CD8 • $8.98

120 years after its premiere at Leipzig (under the baton of Arthur Nikisch), conductor Philippe Herreweghe decided to take a fresh look at Bruckner’s monumental seventh symphony. Originally released in 2004, this was the first recording of any Bruckner symphony on period instruments. The familiar heaviness and overpowering orchestral sound associated with Bruckner is stripped away, revealing a striking connection to the music of J.S. Bach.

A year before writing his unforgettable Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture, Mendelssohn had already taught elves and fairies to fly in the Scherzo of his Octet Op.20. Composed at the age of sixteen, with just four violins, two violas and two cellos, the Octet is already innovative in its basic creative concept. Originally released in 2005, this recording featuring Roel Dieltiens, Frank Braley and Ensemble Explorations aptly displays just how far Mendelssohn expanded the expressive range of chamber music.

Combining a distinctive personal language, an openness to external influences and a reverence for the legacies of the past, the music of Bohuslav Martinů presents an endlessly changing landscape. Originally released in 2008, this recording features violinist Isabelle Faust performing a program that explores Martinů's amazing creative diversity. Its music ranges from the Neo-Classical Serenade No.2 to the lyrical Violin Concerto No.1, which is characteristic of the composer's American period.

After his highly personal exploration of Romantic lieder by Schubert and Wolf, tenor Werner Güra turned to less familiar repertoire with this selection of fourteen songs by Mozart, originally released in 2008. These jewel-like miniatures accompanied the events of Mozart's life like illustrations in a picture-book, from the departure of a close friend to a meeting of his Masonic Lodge. Fortepianist Christoph Berner is also in the spotlight, performing four pieces for solo keyboard.

Sonata No.3 dates from the composer’s middle period and is contemporary with his fourth and fifth symphonies. Sonatas Nos.4 and 5 were composed at the beginning of Beethoven’s visionary late period and rub shoulders with his last violin sonata. It is often forgotten that Rudolf Serkin (1903-91) originally came from central Europe, received his musical training in Vienna, and promoted the music of Schönberg, Reger and Bartok before embarking on a career in the United States. There he became a key player in the musical world and an influential teacher. Like Annie Fischer, Geza Anda and Daniel Barenboim, Serkin was able to convey the spiritual link between Mozart’s giocoso and Bartok’s night music. Here, the consummate interpreter of Beethoven returns to his musical roots.
