As harpsichordist, conductor and musical director of the ensemble Les Talens Lyriques, Christophe Rousset is one of today's finest interpreters of Baroque music. On this Aparté release he leads his ensemble and a dream cast featuring baritone Stéphane Degout in François Couperin's cantata Ariane consolée par Bacchus. Couperin came from a dynasty of musicians very much in the public eye, starting with the beginning of the reign of Louis XIV. Although he was called Couperin le Grand and chosen personally by the Sun King, France quickly forgot him after his death. However, the Germans, following the lead of J.S. Bach, would consider him the most accomplished expression of French genius in the 18th century and thus Couperin's lasting fame was assured.

Originally founded in 1783, La Concert de la Loge was resurrected in 2015 by violinist Julien Chauvin. Once considered one of the best orchestras in Europe, it is most famous for commissioning Haydn's 'Paris' Symphonies. Death preyed heavily on the minds of both Schubert and Sibelius when they composed the works featured on this new recording from the Ehnes Quartet. Between 1907 and 1909 Sibelius's health was seriously deteriorating. Along with the bleak and highly personal fourth symphony, the String Quartet Op.56 "Intimate Voices" is one of the composer's masterworks from this difficult period. Schubert wrote to a friend in 1824, "I am the most unhappy and wretched creature in the world... whose health will never be right again." Schubert's emotions veered from happy memories of earlier years to terror at the prospect of death. The String Quartet No.14 makes ingenious use of his song "Death and the Maiden" and captures the mood of Schubert’s fearful state of mind to perfection.

Alexander Glazunov was a Russian composer, music teacher and conductor of the late Russian Romantic period. He served as director of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory between 1905 and 1928. The most famous student during his tenure was Dmitri Shostakovich. Subterranea is the dĂŠbut album from six piece ensemble Mosaic, led by 2015 Kenny Wheeler Jazz Prize winner and British vibraphonist Ralph Wyld. The Space Between is the second album by guitarists (and longtime friends) Stuart McCallum and Mike Walker. McCallum and Walker are British guitar giants, equally proficient and skilled, yet with vastly different sounds, setups and backgrounds.
