Formed in 2002 at the Royal Northern College of Music, The Heath Quartet is fast earning a reputation as one of the most charismatic British chamber ensembles. A Palace Upon The Ruins
Academy, GRAMMY® and Golden Globe winning composer Howard Shore is best known for his rich and densely orchestrated scores for Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings films. This disc features a more intimate – and classical – side of Shore's music. The title work, A Palace Upon The Ruins, is a song-cycle, sung here by mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano. The texts were inspired by a story from the past that speaks of the healing of an unresolved trauma. Other works on the program include Six Pieces for chamber orchestra (featuring the Kronos Quartet) and Catania, a work for solo piano played by superstar pianist Lang Lang. Beethoven wrote his first nine Violin Sonatas over a period of just seven years, between 1798 and 1803. The tenth was written much later, in 1812. From the influence of Mozart and Haydn in the early sonatas to the more complex language of the "Kreutzer" Sonata, these masterpieces perfectly illustrate the composer's journey to artistic maturity. Violinist Pierre Fouchenneret, one of the most outstanding young violinists of his generation, recorded this major cycle in three concerts with pianist Romain Descharmes. Iván Fischer is founder and Music Director of the Budapest Festival Orchestra. This partnership has become one of the greatest success stories in the past thirty years of classical music. "It seems to me that Mahler has the whole history of music in his care," wrote Luciano Berio in 1978, ten years after composing his Sinfonia. Joseph Pons leads the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Synergy Vocals in this supreme masterpiece, whose third movement is a monument to the glory of the emblematic post-Romantic composer. The special place of the eighth book of Madrigals in the secular output of Claudio Monteverdi cannot be overemphasized. Bach's four Masses BWV233-236, composed in Leipzig between 1735 and 1744, consist for the most part of parodies and re-workings of cantata movements. As a result, they were long considered second-rate music. But listening to these classic performances from Konrad Junghänel and Cantus Cölln, it soon becomes apparent that Bach succeeded in his adapatations. Originally released in 2007.

Handel was 63 years old when he composed Solomon, one of his final masterpieces. This monumental oratorio depicts three famous episodes in the life of the biblical king. This commanding performance features Daniel Reuss leading the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and the RIAS Kammerchor, and an outstanding cast of vocal soloists including Sarah Connolly, Susan Gritton, Carolyn Sampson and Mark Padmore. Originally released in 2007.
Mendelssohn composed only two oratorios, but both Paulus and Elijah are probably the greatest examples of the form in Romantic music. Phillippe Herreweghe's performance of Paulus avoids the excessive weight and sentimantality of some modern renditions and restores the work's extraordinary dramatic power. Though lesser-known today, composers Alfred Hill and George Boyle enjoyed distinguished careers, both in their native Australia and abroad. Hill was known as the 'grand old man' of Australian musical life in his time.
