Florilegium celebrates its 25 anniversary with a new album of Telemann concertos on Channel Classics that includes a bonus retrospective compilation. On Evidence, flautist Raquele Magalhaes brings together four 20th century composers on an album cleverly entitled Patchwork. Following on the success of their previous Gershwin album for harmonia mundi, Steven Richman and the Harmonie Ensemble/New York recapture the lean, unsentimental style that Gershwin intended for An American in Paris and the Concerto in F. The harmonia mundi label adds two new volumes in its Latitudes world music series. Hawniyaz features a group of four internationally renowned musicians including Kayhan Kalhor performing a totally new and enchanting repertory. Acclaimed Asian musicians Wang Li and Wu Wei join forces for Overtones — an album of fascinating improvisations. From the vault, harmonia mundi offers ten more reissues of classic recordings in the hmGold series, and Praga pays tribute to four legendary artists with albums from Yevgeny Mravinsky, Bruno Walter, František Stupka and Igor Stravinsky.

RACHEL PODGER DECODES THE ART OF FUGUE
Rachel Podger has been recording and performing Bach's music for violin to critical acclaim for over two decades. In 2015 she became the tenth, and first female recipient of the Royal Academy of Music Bach Prize. For her third career Bach recording she leads her own ensemble, Brecon Baroque, in The Art of Fugue. Beethoven's Symphony No.4 is sunny and cheerful, recalling the music of Joseph Haydn. By contrast, Shostakovich's Symphony No.10 contains fifty minutes of tragedy, despair, terror and violence but only three of triumph. These historical performances from the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra and Yevgeny Mravinsky were recorded in 1955.

The string ensemble was a particular favorite medium for German composers. Composers from Wagner to Berg used the form to narrate and set a scene without words. It can be almost operatic in feel, offering both entrancing and exalting moments. Bruno Wallter leads the Columbia Symphony Orchestra and George Sebastian the Lepzig Gewandhaus in a program of four works for string ensemble.

These four Stravinsky works, each led by a legendary conductor – Haitink, Klemperer, Fricsay – present various different sides of Stravinsky. The program features his final version of Pulcinella, which embraced a departure from the Rite of Spring with its neo-classical feel. His Violin Concerto, played here by the legendary David Oistrakh, marked a return to Bach. The Jeu de Cartes, conducted by Stravinsky himself, gleefully makes the joker come across as a real prankster, while a 1963 rendering of his Movements manages to demystify Webern-style serialism in a mere ten minutes.

František Stupka (1879-1965) is ranked among the greatest Czech conductors of the 20th century, alongside Bedrich Bakala, Rafael Kubelík, Vaclav Talich and Karel Ančerl. After leading a string quartet, he was codirector of the Czech Philharmonic with Talich from 1946-56. His career was limited to the east and his significant contributions to new ensembles like the Moravian Philharmonic remained without any modern studio recordings. Here Praga offers this tribute as a reminder Stupka’s landmark rendering of two of Dvorak’s masterpieces, Symphonies Nos.8 and 9.
