NEW RELEASE HIGHLIGHTS Please note street dates indicated in the red boxes Following their internationally acclaimed recording of Steve Reich’s masterpiece Music For 18 Musicians, Ensemble Signal and Brad Lubman present two recent pieces by the composer: Double Sextet and Radio Rewrite. The latter was inspired by British rock band Radiohead. Summer brings with it the latest installments of four ongoing series from Hyperion Records: The Romantic Piano Concerto Vol.68 featuring pianist Ludmil Angelov, The Classical Piano Concerto Vol.3 featuring pianist Howard Shelley, The Romantic Violin Concerto Vol.20 featuring violinist Bartomiej Nizio and volume six of Angela Hewitt’s critically-acclaimed Beethoven Piano Sonata cycle. Also on Hyperion, soprano Sophie Bevan, Young Singer Award winner at the inaugural 2013 International Opera Awards, presents a program of songs by Max Reger, The Orlando Consort offer a third collection of music by Machaut, James O’Donnell leads the Westminster Abbey Choir in masses by Taverner and David Skinner and his new ensemble De Profundis sing première recordings of music by Bernardinus Ribera, a forgotten figure from sixteenth-century Spain. Onyx Classics offers the recording début of 24 year-old Czech violinist Jan Mrácek performing an all-Dvorák program. Early music specialist Jordi Savall documents the travels of 13th Century Catalan scholar Ramon Llull in a fascinating 2-SACD set accompanied by a lavish hard-bound book. Lastly, Edition Records presents two highly anticipated jazz recordings: the first new solo music in over a decade from Phronesis’s Jasper Høiby and the label début of the Elliot Galvin Trio.

Ramon Llull was a 13th Century Catalan philosopher, logician, author and Catholic missionary. A member of the Third Order of Saint Francis, he was killed while attempting to convert Muslims in North Africa and later beatified for his work by Pope Pius IX. He is also credited with writing the first major work of Catalan literature. This lush double SACD and hardbound book documents Llull's travels across the Mediterranean Sea. Jordi Savall, Hespèrion XXI and La Capella Reial de Catalunya paint a sonic portrait of a world that hasn’t yet chosen between dialogue and conflict, showing how music encouraged the former while history confirmed the latter.

Following their internationally acclaimed recording of Steve Reich’s masterpiece Music For 18 Musicians, Ensemble Signal and Brad Lubman present two recent pieces by the composer: Double Sextet from 2007 and Radio Rewrite from 2012. Double Sextet is scored for two sextets of flute, clarinet, violin, cello, vibraphone and piano. It won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Music — the first for the composer. Radio Rewrite is a work for instrumental ensemble inspired by two songs by the British rock band Radiohead — "Jigsaw Falling into Place" and "Everything in Its Right Place." The piece represents the first time that Reich has reworked material from western pop/rock music. These strong, tuneful, energetic, tightly made works receive impassioned performances from Ensemble Signal, who The New York Times has called "one of the most vital groups of its kind."

Franz Xaver Mozart was born just four months before the death of his father, Wolfgang Amadeus. Although a pianist of similarly precocious talent, he wrote only two piano concertos.
