MARCH 2016

NEW RELEASE HIGHLIGHTS Please note that we now have multiple street dates for each month. The red box in the upper right hand corner of each page will indicate the street date for titles on that page. In most cases, release dates will be the first and third Fridays. The key titles in our March release feature both established stars and up-and-coming talents. Acclaimed conductor and keyboard virtuoso Christophe Rousset completes his traversal of Bach's monumental Well Tempered Clavier with a recording of the 24 Preludes & Fugues of Book 1 for Aparté. His partner once again is the glorious 1628 Ruckers doublemanual harpsichord located at the Palace of Versailles. Celebrate the Easter season with another album of sublime choral singing from the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge led by Graham Ross. The choir is on top form on Haec Dies, the latest release in harmonia mundi's series of albums devoted to the seasons of the church year. Britain's top cellist, Steven Isserlis, performs concertos by Elgar and Walton on his latest release for Hyperion. Unflinchingly challenging the ghost of Jacqueline du Pré, Isserlis brings the full range of his formidable technique and keen musicality to bear in Elgar's evergreen masterpiece. American composer Mason Bates is a rising star. His fascinating music connects the seemingly disparate worlds of classical and electronic dance music. The latest release from MTT and the San Francisco Symphony features a selection of Bates's groundbreaking compositions. Baritone Christopher Purves stars as Walt Disney in one of Philip Glass's most controversial works, his opera The Perfect American, which receives its world première recording this month on Orange Mountain. On the jazz front, young Israeli-American bassist Omer Avital headlines on an exciting new release for Jazz Village.

Japanese harpist Naoko Yoshino is one the of the world’s leading musicians. Upon their first meeting in 2013, Yoshino felt as if she had found her “musical soulmates” in Roberto Forés Veses and the Orchestre d’Auvergne. This recording is the result of their special relationship, which has grown and matured over their continued collaboration. The works they have recorded are some of the most beautiful of the harp repertoire.

Each appearance of Atsushi Sakai and Christophe Rousset leaves an unforgettable memory with those who have had the good fortune to hear them in concert. Long-standing partners, they now join together for the first time on disc for a composer they revere: the mysterious Antoine Forqueray. Born in 1672 in Paris, he was one of the greatest gambists of all time. Famed for his virtuosic improvisations, he published none of his 300-odd pieces before dying in 1745. Aside from a few handwritten works copied in the collections of other composers, all of Forqueray’s music has been lost.

The mélodies of Benjamin Godard (1849-1895) are little-known, and yet, Godard was one of the most prolific composers in the genre. Focusing on opera after the success of his dramatic symphony Le Tasse in 1878, Godard composed several lyric works that overshadowed his 162 published songs. Today, they remain one of the most interesting parts of his catalogue. The pieces selected here by Tassis Christoyannis and Jeff Cohen, most of them recorded for the first time, illustrate the composer’s literary sensibilities.

Violinist Nicolas Dautricourt and pianist Dana Ciocarlie present the world première recordings of Benjamin Godard’s Violin Sonatas. A prolific composer as well as a talented violinist and pianist, Godard’s works are written in the tradition of Beethoven. They combine the qualities of inspiration, intensity of emotion and the easy virtuosity that defined romanticism. These works allow us to see different faces of Godard - from the first sonata, crafted in the ardor of his youth, to the fourth, regarded as a masterpiece of the form.

Notturno, the début recording by the ensemble L’Escadron Volant de la Reine, is the result of several years’ work studying Italian music of the late 17th century. The group chose to record this repertoire for its beauty and rarity. The music lets each musician speak and the instruments carry on a dialogue as equals. The name L’Escadron Volant de la Reine means ‘The Queen’s Flying Squad.’ This was a designation for the ladies-in-waiting recruited by Catherine de Médici, who were given the responsibility of diplomacy at the court.

We discover Disney's delusions of immortality, his utopian visions and his tortured life. Characters include Wilhelm Dantine, a cartoonist who worked for Disney who desperately seeks his recognition, Disney's wife Lillian, his confidante Hazel, his brother Roy, his children Diane and Sharo and his close (and ill-treated) collaborators. This is a logical, albeit rare, combination of works – presented to the Politburo to reflect victory and irresistible force. Understandably they favored the fifth but unjustifiably disliked the sixth. The 'two-headed symphony' had the misfortune to displease Stalin, who expected an ode to his glory. Yevgeny Mravinsky seldom performed these symphonies but has left for posterity a few ardent concert recordings.

Curro de Utrera's performances provided an opportunity to marvel at his sturdy, powerful and sonorous voice. For Curro, singing was obviously a way to call forth and express things hidden deep inside him. Curro stretched his melody out in time, showing he had not only big lungs but also a big heart.

With his well-stocked 'bag of tricks,' Jarrito is a genuine walking encyclopedia of flamenco cante.
