FEBRUARY 2016

NEW RELEASE HIGHLIGHTS This month we début a sleek and stylish new look for our release brochures. The larger, letter-size format offers more room to showcase our new titles. Please note that we now have multiple street dates for each month. The red box in the upper right hand corner of each page will indicate the street date for titles on that page. In most cases, release dates will be the first and third Fridays. Leading off February’s list of notable titles is a new harmonia mundi disc of Prokofiev Piano Concertos featuring Van Cliburn Gold Medalist Vadym Kholodenko. Backed by conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Kholodenko displays his superb technique and burnished tone in dazzling performances that will not disappoint. The latest volume in Hyperion’s Romantic Piano Concerto series explores the music of Ludomir Rózycki. Jonathan Plowright plays the Polish composer’s two concertos. Choral music fans will rejoice over Hyperion’s new album of music by Alec Roth. Performed by Jeffrey Skidmore and Ex Cathedra, Roth’s heartbreakingly beautiful music is heard in superb performances on a disc that is sure to be one of the year’s best. Another outstanding British choir, ORA, makes their harmonia mundi début this month with Upheld by Stillness – a disc that pairs Renaissance masterworks by William Byrd with ‘reflections’ on those pieces by six acclaimed contemporary composers. Both modern and period interpretive styles are featured in new discs by the Akademie für Alte Music Berlin and pianist Angela Hewitt. Hewitt presents a superb disc of Sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti, while the Akademie offers their take on Handel’s immortal Water Music. Releases by two stars of the jazz world round out the month. GRAMMY® nominated pianist Omar Sosa is featured on a new trio disc called JOG, and British jazz superstar Ian Shaw makes his Jazz Village début with The Theory of Joy.

Dvořák’s most celebrated choral work Four world-renowned solists Available on DVD and Blu-ray

The Stabat Mater is Dvořák’s most celebrated choral work. He began composing the piece in late 1875, but set it aside. Then, two tragedies befell him and he was plunged into an uncharacteristically melancholic mood. The deaths of his eleven-month-old daughter and three-year-old son compelled Dvořák to complete his masterpiece. Even though stricken with grief, Dvořák still could not resist writing simple, folk-like, melodies for his luminous Stabat Mater. On this performance, acclaimed conductor Mariss Jansons leads four superb soloists and the combined forces of the chorus and orchestra of the Bayerischen Rundfunk. 82 Minutes/ Stereo/ 16:9/ NTSC/ Region 0

Prize-winning baritone’s Channel Classics début Giacometti plays two different period fortepianos Features Schumann’s best-known song cycle, Dichterliebe

Dutch baritone Thomas Oliemans, winner of the 2013 Prix d’ Amis of The Netherlands Opera, is accompanied by Italian pianist Paolo Giacometti on this recital of Schumann lieder. The program features Schumann’s bestknown song cycle, Dichterliebe, and his most mysterious, Sechs Gedichte und Requiem. Schumann, believing mistakenly that the poet Lenau had died, added a requiem to the five settings. When word of Lenau’s actual death reached Schumann on the day of the cycles first performance, the work became an eerie prophecy. Also included here is the Sechs Gesänge, dedicated to Swedish soprano Jenny Lind. Oliemans and Giacometti are perfectly matched on the baritone’s Channel Classics début. For her first solo disc, Marie van Rhijn brings together two of her passions: the French vocal repertoire of the “tragédie lyrique” and the music for the viola da gamba. This program explorers the musical colors of King Louis XIV’s court. Sometimes orchestral and at other times intimate, these works are beautifully performed by Rhijn on a rare harpsichord from 1679, which has never been recorded before.

A new look at Pachelbel’s famous Canon Explores Pachelbel’s ‘other’ compositions Follow up to Gli incogniti’s acclaimed Vivaldi recording

Though the bass line of a certain celebrated Canon may have made Pachelbel the most frequently heard classical composer in the world, this sparkling program shows he was not just a ‘one hit wonder.’ It is built around suites for two violins and continuo from a collection called the Musikalische Ergötzung. The title means ‘musical delight,’ and indeed one cannot but be ravished by the extraordinary sonic hedonism displayed in these works. A few songs written for special occasions add further spice to this delightful recording featuring tenor Hans-Jörg Mammel and the ensemble Gli incogniti led by Amandine Beyer. Isabelle Faust’s performances of J.S. Bach’s immortal solo Sonatas and Partitas are now available complete at a special price, paired with a harmonia mundi catalog. For these recordings, Faust returned to the original manuscript sources to offer us her personal vision of these iconic masterpieces of the violin repertoire. In Bach’s time, music for solo instruments was still little-explored territory, and his Sonatas and Partitas immediately established themselves as a benchmark – both technically challenging and brimming with creativity.

This CD Plus Catalog release pairs albums of music by two iconic American composers. On Music for Peter Gunn, the GRAMMY®-nominated Harmonie Ensemble / New York places their stamp on Mancini’s iconic orchestrations for the classic TV detective series. Gershwin By Grofé is a swinging set of symphonic jazz orchestrations penned by composer and arranger Ferde Grofé in the 1920’s for the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. The disc’s main event is a red-hot performance of the original jazz band version of the immortal Rhapsody in Blue with pianist Lincoln Mayorga.

Following on the worldwide success of In a Time Lapse, Ludovico Einaudi presents his new work, [Elements], available now on vinyl. The work’s sound is lush and deep and interwoven with a freshness that naturally blends Einaudi’s piano with acoustic and electronic sounds. In addition to his usual collaborators, the album also features the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Berlin-based electronic musician Robert Lippok, Brazilian percussionist Mauro Refosco and South African violinist Daniel Hope. The composer said of the album, “Elements sprang from a desire to start anew, following a different path of knowledge. I saw new frontiers — on the edge between what I knew and what I didn’t know — that I had long wanted to explore... gradually, everything came together in a dance, as if all the elements were parts of the same world, and myself within it.”

Shostakovich’s string quartets are the epitome of eloquence. The four selections here progress from the golden age of Soviet realism with Quartet No.10, though to the Webernian purity of Quartet No.13. The Beethoven Quartet, Shostakovich’s frequent collaborator, was the first to record these works. He dedicated several of his fifteen quartets to the group and its members.

In the spring of 1945, the intelligentsia in Russia and the rest of the world expected Shostakovich’s Symphony No.9 to glorify Stalin’s victory with a hymn worthy of Beethoven’s. What emerged was a symphonic scherzo, more Rossini-like than majestic, except for the solemn brass call of the largo. Performed here by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra led by Zdeněk Košler, the symphony is paired with the Piano Trio in memory of his the composer’s friend Ivan Sollertinsky, who had lost favor with the Kremlin, and the String Quartet No.3, his last diatribe against vice and violence.

Brahms’s Violin Sonatas have become a reference for the “romantic sonata form.” Each of the three works has its own sentimental mood. The first uses the theme from Brahms’s “Regenlied” and is obviously modeled on Beethoven’s last Violin Sonata. The second is warmer and more intimate, drawing inspiration from his affection for young German soprano Hermine Spies. The third has a vehemence and greatness which, this time, exceeds the Beethovenian model of the Kreutzer-Sonata. Iconic violinist David Oistrakh is accompanied by Frida Bauer on Sonata No.1 and No.3 and Sviatoslav Richter on No.2.

Broadcast Film Critics Association Award “Best Composer” New York Film Critics Online Award “Best Use of Music” Online Film Critics Society Award Nominee “Best Original Score”

Philip Glass’s score for Neil Burger’s film The Illusionist was widely acclaimed upon its release in 2006. The music for the film, set in 1900s Vienna, evokes the feeling of mystery and wonder that surrounds the famous magician Eisenheim (played by Edward Norton) and it is performed brilliantly by the Czech Film Orchestra under the baton of Michael Riesman. As part of the ongoing series From the Philip Glass Recording Archive, this reissue from Orange Mountain Music aims to keep this brilliant score in print with this completely remastered edition from the original tapes.
