The list of ‘must have’ recordings that feature maestro Jordi Savall, either as a performer or conductor, is already extensive. This month another Alia Vox release joins that pantheon of masterpieces. Thematically linked programs are one of Savall’s signatures. Through works by Rebel, Telemann and Vivaldi and others, Les Éléments explores the forces of nature. Hyperion’s various concerto collections are among the label’s best sellers year after year. This month, two new recordings will give collectors much to enjoy. Violinist Jack Liebeck is the featured soloist in volume nineteen of The Romantic Violin Concerto series. The talented young performer plays works by Bruch including the Violin Concerto No.1. Pianist Howard Shelley, conducting from the keyboard, plays works by Daniel Steibelt on the second volume of The Classical Piano Concerto. Three of the harmonia mundi label’s top artists offer new recordings that are sure to please. Star conductor Pablo Heras-Casado leads the Freiburger Barockorchester in Mendelssohn’s third and fourth symphonies, while Trio Wanderer performs chamber music of Brahms and fortepianist Kristian Bezuidenhout completes his benchmark series of Mozart keyboard works. The music of film composer extraordinaire Howard Shore provides the perfect complement to the powerful and emotionally charged film Spotlight, which recently débuted in theatres.

HEINICHEN Italian Cantatas & Concertos

IMPORT Most listeners today would say with confidence that the Baroque era was dominated by the towering figures of J.S Bach, Handel and Vivaldi. However, scholars of the period would disagree. In fact, Johann Mattheson coined the phrase “three important H’s of German music” to describe Handel, Hasse... and Johann David Heinichen. Although the music of Heinichen has enjoyed a modest Renaissance in recent years, much of his output still remains obscure and underexplored. Heinichen’s compositions are emblematic of the cultural riches of the reign of King Augustus the Strong of Saxony. This recording featuring the Batzdorfer Hofkapelle features a selection of Heinichen’s Italian-inspired Cantatas and Concertos. The vocal soloists are soprano Marie Friederike Schöder and alto Terry Wey.

CHILDREN’S

JANUARY 2016

Natalie Dessay, Shani Diluka La Dolce Volta • LDV 24

IMPORT In the kingdom of the elephants, Santa Claus does not exist. Babar’s three children Pom, Flora and Alexander, write a letter to Santa Claus asking him to visit. Every morning they await the arrival of the postman, but there is no answer from Santa. Troubled by his children’s sadness, Babar sets out in search of Santa Claus. This staple of children’s literature is narrated and sung (in French only) by soprano Natalie Dessay and set to the music of Bizet, Brahms, Debussy, Grieg, Poulenc, Ravel, Satie and Saint-Saëns, performed here by pianist Shani Diluka.
