Rush-released to support a multi-city US tour, the latest album from Cuban jazz master Chucho Valdés pays tribute to the legendary band Irakere. Recorded live at the Marciac jazz festival by Jazz Village, Tribute to Irakere is destined to be one of the top jazz titles of 2015. The equally legendary René Jacobs adds another jewel to his crown of benchmark Mozart opera recordings for harmonia mundi with this month’s release of Die Entführung aus dem Serail. The recording puts a special focus on the opera’s spoken dialogue, which is crucial to the libretto’s plot. Concerto recordings dominate our priorities this month with a trio of dazzling performances including pianist Emanuel Ax playing Beethoven, violinist Alina Ibragimova playing Bach and cellist Emmanuelle Bertrand playing Dutilleux. Offered once again after a production delay, Midori’s eagerly anticipated recording of Bach’s Sonatas & Partitas for Onyx is finally available for shipping. Hyperion’s star pianist Stephen Hough, always a crowd-pleaser, offers up a disc of charming solo works by Janácek and Scriabin. Piano quintets by Granados and Turina are the focus of the latest release from harmonia mundi pianist Javier Perianes. New additions to ongoing series include Iván Fischer’s Brahms Symphony No.4 and a new disc of Taverner choral music from The Tallis Scholars. Last but not least, Hyperion presents Yulefest! – a joyous new addition to the holiday music catalog featuring the talents of the Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge led by Stephen Layton.

IMPORT The Tallis Scholars return one again to the music of John Taverner with the Missa Corona spinea. A challenging mass setting, the magnificence of its conception can be heard in both the overall structure of the movements and the detail within the vocal writing. Taverner felt able to ignore the natural boundaries of the text and experiment with scoring. It is believed to have been a commissioned work, but the occasion and commissioner’s identity remain unknown. Taverner set Dum transisset Sabbatum twice. The first has always been the more famous, but the second is just as engaging and offers quite a different interpretation of the possibilities. With this program, Peter Phillips and The Tallis Scholars give us a repose from the noisy and insistent world in which we live.

IMPORT The programs for Sir John Barbirolli’s 1964 concerts in Manchester included music from Tristan und Isolde, Der fliegende Holländer, the Siegfried Idyll and Mozart’s Symphony No.40. They were both delayed commemorations of the 150th anniversary of Wagner’s birth. According to Frances Graham in the Manchester Daily Express, Sir John explained that, “there were not enough top-flight Wagnerian sopranos to go round. We decided to wait until January 1964 – the middle of our 1964 season – for our celebration. We also wanted to wait for Finnish soprano Anita Välkki.” It was a worthwhile wait. Miss Välkki’s singing must have come as a revelation to even the most experienced Wagnerian.
