NEWS & HIGHLIGHTS Iván Fischer’s Mahler symphony recordings for Channel Classics have fired up critics more than any cycle in recent years. With uniformly stellar performances and rich, spectacular surround-sound audio, these discs are self-recommending. Not surprisingly, Fischer’s release of the Symphony No.9 may garner the highest accolades of all. From the first note, it is obvious that this is a reading that will stand the test of time. Young German pianist Joseph Moog is one of today’s rising stars of the keyboard. His fourth release for Onyx features a pair of concertos, one well-known (Grieg) and one less so (Moszkowski). As always, Moog’s superb technique and insightful performances will delight listeners. The English ensemble Arcangelo present their first all-instrumental disc for Hyperion – a program of wind concertos by Mozart and Haydn. The Nash Ensemble is featured in a fascinating disc of American chamber music that includes works by Copland, Gershwin, Hermann and Waxman. Also on Hyperion, the amazingly talented violinist Alina Ibragimova performs the fiendishly difficult solo sonatas of Eugene Ysayë and Steven Isserlis, accompanied by Stephen Hough, is the soloist in a fascinating disc of cello sonatas including a new work by Hough. Early music ensemble Stile Antico has graced the world stage for over ten years now. This month, harmonia mundi offers a specially-priced 10th Anniversary SACD featuring personal favorites of the group’s vocalists. The Flautadors recorder quartet débuts on First Hand with Cynthia’s Revels, a lovely disc of music from the Elizabethan period, and for jazz and blues fans, this month includes important new releases from Harold López-Nussa, Ahmad Jamal and Lucky Peterson.

IMPORT The transverse flute was especially popular at the French court in the early 18th century. At the same time, Italian tastes were finding their Price Code: A22 way into Paris. IMPORT Handel’s solo sonatas exist in versions for various wind instruments as well as for violin, in some cases differing in their respective keys and Price Code: 2A13 number of movements. Many were reworked (2 CD Set, Suggested Retail Price: $27.98) in later printed editions so that they would be playable on the transverse flute, an instrument that was becoming ever more popular in England at that time. This release of the complete wind sonatas takes into account the different versions of the pieces. The Complete Columbia Recordings 1936-1939
IMPORT • 2 for the Price of 1 Anatole Kitain was an exact contemporary and fellow pupil of Vladimir Horowitz in Kiev, where he studied, as did Simon Barere, with Price Code: A19 Felix Blumenfeld. All three developed fabulous (2 CD Set, Suggested Retail Price: $19.98) techniques and were romantic pianists in the grand manner, and each fled Russia after the revolution. That Kitain is the least known can only be put down to misfortune as these recordings attest to a pianist of fabulous talent. Sadly he failed to ‘make it’ after his emigration to the USA and slowly faded from view, giving his last New York concert in 1963.

IMPORT • 3 for the Price of 2 These three discs devoted to Dame Myra Hess feature two complete recitals recorded at Illinois University on March 17th & 18th, 1949. They are Price Code: 2A18 the only live recital recordings by the pianist (3 CD Set, Suggested Retail Price: $37.98) known to exist. Each concert featured solo works, a concerto and various encores. Since each concert was too long to fit onto a single CD, the concertos have been coupled and the solo works arranged into musical groupings. Included as a bonus are several off-air recordings taken from the Ford Sunday Evening Hour which was regularly broadcast coast to coast in the USA during the 1930s and early 1940s.

The star of the evening was Geraint Evans as Papageno, whose interpretation of the role was already very familiar but who rose to new heights of excellence on this occasion. The other principals, all veterans of the resident company, contributed first class performances backed by the Royal Opera House Chorus and Orchestra led by Otto Klemperer.

IMPORT In 1990 John Cage met shō player Mayumi Miyata, who requested he write a piece for the ancient Japanese mouth organ. Cage was deeply Price Code: 2A16 impressed by the sound of this instrument and (2 CD Set, Suggested Retail Price: $33.98) in 1991 he wrote Two3 for shō and five water-filled conch shells – one of the so-called “Number Pieces” Cage worked on during the last years of his life. Although the sound of the piece’s structure remains a mystery to rational thinking, it is directly accessible to sensory awareness – especially in the interpretation here played by accordion player Stefan Hussong and sheng virtuoso Wu Wei.
