Time Pieces, double-bass player Kyle Eastwood’s second album for Jazz Village, shows he’s ready to take it to the next level. Joined by Brandon Allen on sax, Quentin Collins on trumpet, Andre McCormack on piano and drummer Ernesto Simpson, Eastwood offers a cool mix of originals and covers that is guaranteed to please. Vocalist Thana Alexa makes her Jazz Village début this month with Ode To Heroes — a remarkable album dedicated to the people who have inspired her personally and musically. Violinist Rachel Podger returns to Vivaldi with L’estro armonico — her third set of Vivaldi concertos for Channel Classics. Hyperion’s star cellist Steven Isserlis plays Russian concertos on his latest release, which pairs works by Prokofiev and Shostakovich. The Tallis Scholars, better known for early music, present Tintinnabuli — a stunning disc of choral music by Arvo Pärt. The harmonia mundi label’s three priorities lead off with the first volume in a trilogy of Schumann discs pairing the composer’s concertos and piano trios. On this release, Isabelle Faust plays the Violin Concerto. Batting second and third, the Britten Sinfonia performs Dimitry Sitkovetsky’s transcription of Bach’s Goldberg Variations and soprano Sunhae Im makes her solo début with an album of Baroque cantatas. Last but not least, Delphian artists David McGuiness and Concerto Caledonia work their usual magic with their interpretations of the music of Purcell, accompanied by a bevy of folk music luminaries.

Eight of Mozart’s divinely inspired Piano Sonatas here receive performances of mercurial inspiration from consummate virtuoso Marc-André Hamelin. Two Rondos, a Fantasia, and a decidedly quirky Gigue complete a delight of a double album. His four Haydn albums have enthralled — this new Mozart will not disappoint.

HANDEL Joshua

IMPORT Joshua is one of four so-called ‘victory’ oratorios Handel composed in the late 1740s, which commemorate the defeat of the 1745-46 Jacobite Rebellion. It takes as its subject matter the biblical story of Joshua, who roused his people to a sequence of divinely aided victories. The oratorio remained a favorite with English and continental audiences until well after Handel’s death. This recording, taken from live performances, features a superb cast of soloists supported by the FestspielOrchester Göttingen, conducted from the harpsichord by Laurence Cummings.

[PRIORITY RELEASE] Rachel Podger (violin), Brecon Baroque Channel Classics • CCS SA 36515

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD L’estro armonico, the title of Vivaldi’s first published collection of concertos, is commonly translated into English as “harmonic fancy.” However, the word oestrus actually means “heat, stimulus, vehement impulse or frenzy” — a better allusion to the startling passion and energy of these twelve concertos, which are widely considered to be among the most influential Baroque orchestral music ever written. Following on their successful and widely acclaimed releases of Vivaldi’s La Cetra and La Stravaganza, this release by Rachel Podger and her ensemble Brecon Baroque captures all of the vitality and freshness of Vivaldi’s invention: its rhythmic energy, melodic and harmonic intensity, textural sensuousness, technical brilliance and dramatic flair.

[PRIORITY RELEASE] James Bowman, Olivia Chaney, Jim Moray, Concerto Caledonia, David McGuinness Delphian • DCD 34161 IMPORT Delving into the past is never a simple matter for David McGuinness and his indomitable early-music-meets-nu-folk group Concerto Caledonia. But the present venture, even more than most, eludes verbal description. The group returns – in the company of some starry guest names – to the territory of their 2011 Britten tribute Revenge of the Folksingers, now engaging with music by Henry Purcell in a tapestry of arrangements and creative responses that is never less than surprising. Variations by eighteenth-century Scot James Oswald rub shoulders with the Purcell tunes they are based on, while original songs by Olivia Chaney and Ana Silvera and some literally ‘electrifying’ instrumental contributions add to the general air of expectations confounded.

eloquentia

Trio Latitude 41 Eloquentia • EL 1547

IMPORT Despite being a prolific composer in nearly every genre, Saint-Saëns is known today largely for his Organ Symphony, piano concertos and Carnival of the Animals. The two Piano Trios, composed in 1863 and 1892, are among the composer’s finest works. Inspired by the terrain and music of the French Pyrenees, the Piano Trio No.1 is a melodic and cheerful work. The second trio is a more serious and thoughtful work, in which the composer holds fast to traditional form and melody in the wake of contemporary trends. On this recording, Trio Latitude 41 get the right balance between emotion and intellect, with interpretations that are both passionate and virtuosic.

[PRIORITY RELEASE] The Tallis Scholars, Peter Phillips Gimell • CDGIM 049 IMPORT To celebrate Arvo Pärt’s 80th birthday, Gimell presents a new recording of some of the Estonian composer’s finest a cappella choral works. This is the first album of contemporary music from The Tallis Scholars since their famous 1984 recording of works by John Tavener. The program here includes several major works including the Magnificat, Sieben Magnificat-Antiphonen, Triodion and I Am the True Vine. The album’s title refers to the compositional style Pärt developed in the 1970s and now employs in most of his works. This simple style was influenced by the composer’s mystical experiences with sacred chant. Tintinnabuli works often have a slow and meditative tempo and a minimalist approach to both notation and performance.

The instigators of the project, violinist Isabelle Faust, pianist Alexander Melnikov and cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras, champion these compositions with deep conviction and a choice of instruments that restores the delicate transparency and subtlety of their textures. The first volume brings together two late and unjustly neglected works, the Violin Concerto and the Piano Trio No.3. Brass Bang!

IMPORT File in: Jazz Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu has never shied away from expanding the vocabulary of jazz. Unusual concepts, avant-garde soundscapes and non-standard instrumental combos are challenges he takes on with relish. Brass Bang! is the fruit of Fresu’s live encounters with trumpeter Steven Bernstein’s ensemble Sex Mob, trombonist Gianluca Petrella’s Cosmic Band and Marcus Rojas, who is considered one of the world’s finest tuba players. The resulting album presents a little-big brass band with great soloists and an incredible universe of poetry, humor, sweeping rhythms and above all, fun.

“One of the most seductive trumpet players in jazz...”

[PRIORITY RELEASE] Time Pieces

IMPORT File in: Jazz Time Pieces, the new album by double-bass player Kyle Eastwood, is a musical self-portrait. Organized around the quintet’s often collective compositions, Eastwood offers a couple of covers (Herbie Hancock and Horace Silver) that show his passion for lyrical hard bop, and a fresh interpretation of one of his compositions for the cinema — one of the main focal points of Eastwood’s career. Full of melodic elegance and a sustained sense of groove, Time Pieces puts us right at the heart of a modern, contemporary jazz songbook. Eastwood is joined by Brandon Allen on sax, Quentin Collins on trumpet and flugelhorn, Andre McCormack on piano and drummer Ernesto Simpson.

“A more sophisticated jazz soundscape that brings together a broad range of styles... Eastwood proves he is ever a master...”
