Hyperion’s incredibly popular Romantic Concerto series has produced some of the most sought-after releases of the past twenty-five years. This month, the Romantic Cello Concerto series reaches volume six with a disc of works by Vieuxtemps featuring the gifted cellist Alban Gerhardt (p.13). Going from strength to strength, Hyperion’s star pianist Angela Hewitt plays Liszt on a new release featuring the B Minor Sonata and the Petrarch Sonnets (p.15). A different kind of piano music is featured on Gloria Cheng’s second release for harmonia mundi entitled Montage. She performs solo works by some of today’s most acclaimed film-music composers including Alexandre Desplat and Randy Newman (p.9). The latest ground-breaking rediscovery for harmonia mundi by conductor René Jacobs is Emilio de’ Cavalieri’s musical drama Rappresentatione di anima et di corpo – arguably the first opera ever written (p.7). Elgar’s Symphony No.1 kicks off Onyx’s new series of recordings of the composer’s orchestral music featuring conductor Vasily Petrenko and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (p.21). Our key non-classical releases include a new recording from legendary Malian singer Boubacar Traoré (p.25), a disc of new music from Morocco featuring Aziz Sahmaoui and University of Gnawa (p.26) and 20 Strings & The Truth, the latest from the nearly uncategorizable world-blues musician Harry Manx (p.27).

IMPORT The coronation of Charles II was a glorious celebration of the restoration of the monarchy following a coup d’ètat, civil war and an eleven-year Price Code: A22 government of the Commonwealth under Oliver (Suggested Retail Price: $22.98) Cromwell. Although contemporary statements concerning the music that was played are imprecise, Wim Becu and the ensemble Oltremontano have created this fascinating reconstruction of the ceremony, which portrays the King’s arrival, his coronation in Westminster Abbey, the ensuing royal banquet and the royal masques that followed.

Lux Aeterna – Visions of Bach Piano transcriptions by Kempff, Siloti & Busoni

IMPORT For her début recording on Aparté, acclaimed Swiss pianist Beatrice Berrut offers listeners an intimate vision of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Price Code: A21 Playing on a rare Bösendorfer prototype, Berrut has (Suggested Retail Price: $21.98) assembled a program comprised of transcriptions by Wilhelm Kempff, Alexander Siloti and Ferrucio Busoni, a selection of Chorales and three Études in Baroque style by the contemporary French composer Thierry Escaich. Together these works demonstrate both the timelessness and universality of Bach’s music and the Baroque period’s lasting effects on composers of today.

CHAUSSON Concert Op.21 FRANCK Violin Sonata Rachel Kolly d’Alba (violin), Christian Chamorel (piano), Spektral Quartet Chicago Aparté • AP 102 IMPORT This release featuring violinist Rachel Kolly d’Alba, pianist Christian Chamorel and the Spektral Quartet Chicago, presents two major Price Code: A21 works of chamber music written at the dawn of (Suggested Retail Price: $21.98) the twentieth century. Few works of the period are more recognizable than César Franck’s magnificent Violin Sonata. The work has been transcribed for nearly every instrument on the planet, and is a permanent staple of the repertoire. Franck’s influence on Ernest Chausson’s Concert is unmistakable. A late-Romantic hybrid, the work blends elements of piano quintet and string quintet styles.

MOZART String Quartet K421 MENDELSSOHN String Quartet Op.13

IMPORT The Chiaroscuro Quartet was founded in 2005 by four students from the Royal College of Music in London, led by violinist Alina Ibragimova. Playing on period instruments and bows, the group’s repertoire focuses primarily on works of the Classical period. This release pairs Mozart’s String Quartet K421 with the String Quartet Op.13 by Felix Mendelssohn. These masterpieces of the repertoire are illuminated by the Chiaroscuro Quartet’s insightful performances.

“Ibragimova and her colleagues have in two recordings come to the top of the heap. No other ensemble excites me as much in this repertoire.”

FAULKES Organ Works An Edwardian concert with England’s organ composer

IMPORT William Faulkes – England’s most prolific organ composer – was one of the leading figures in a generation of organists and organ composers whose Price Code: A19 style of writing went out of fashion. His music is (Suggested Retail Price: $19.98) melodious, spirited, uplifting – a manifest example of the national confidence present in the early part of the twentieth century. Emmanuelle Bertrand (cello), Pascal Amoyel (piano) harmonia mundi • HMC 902199

IMPORT The summer of 1846 was to be the last that Chopin would spend at George Sand’s estate in Nohant. It was there that he composed or completed the core of his works over a period of seven years. That last, golden summer produced some of Chopin’s most ambitious pieces, including the Barcarolle, the Nocturnes Op.62a, and of course the Cello Sonata, the very last work published in his lifetime. Pascal Amoyel and Emmanuelle Bertrand plunge us into the heart of those few months before the couple’s separation; the ailing Chopin did not yet know that he was leaving his musical testament.

“Under Bertrand’s hands, the cello takes on an almost human character, a living voice.”

Garrick Ohlsson (piano) Hyperion • CDA 67988

IMPORT Over the course of his tragically short life, Alexander Scriabin wrote monumental works of great import. In between these efforts he produced a steady torrent of miniatures – concentrated gems of this same expansive genius. Fascinatingly, the title Poème is applied both to symphonic works and to the extended series of thirty-four piano pieces recorded here. Their inspirations are as varied as their titles and they offer a key into their composer’s inner world. Pianist Garrick Ohlsson is an acknowledged master of the genre, and this new Scriabin recording will only enhance his already admirable reputation.

Vieuxtemps and Ysaÿe are best known for their pyrotechnic compositions for the violin, but each also wrote two works for cello and orchestra. Little-known today, they are nothing short of a revelation. The two Vieuxtemps concertos contain all the elements familiar from their famous violin counterparts. MACHAUT The Dart of Love

IMPORT Western music as we know it today has its roots in the fourteenth century, and most famously in the pioneering works of Guillaume de Machaut. Why he chose to set his remarkable poetry to music in this way we may never know, but the results continue to hold those who hear it enraptured. 20 Strings & The Truth

IMPORT File in: Blues 20 Strings & the Truth is the instrumental album Harry Manx fans have been waiting for. His signature instrument, the 20-string Mohan Veena, is the focus of the album and vocals appear on just one track. Many of the tracks are based on Indian ragas, where Manx uses the ‘mode’ of the raga as a foundation in creating his own songs. Much like a good raga, this collection of instrumental works is a great soundtrack to whatever journey you are on.

IMPORT 180-gram Super Fidelity Vinyl; Free Download Card Included File in: Pop / Rock Jazz Village’s Magma series primarily focuses on classic recordings, reissued in celebration of the band’s 45th anniversary. However, Slag Tanz – a masterpiece of symphonic metal – has previously only been heard in live performance. Magma first released Félicité Thösz in 2012. Dominated by the celestial voice of Stella Vander, it was the band’s first studio album since they re-formed in the early part of the century. With lyrics in French (which is not common in the band’s discography) as well as Kobaïan, the language invented by Christian Vander, Félicité Thösz is a trip which will lead you from Japan to the Urals via Central Asia, with a detour to pay homage to Tamla Motown. Powerful, hypnotic and unclassifiable, there has been absolutely nothing like Magma in the last fifty years.
