The extraordinary vocal quartet Anonymous 4 returns this month with Marie et Marion, a follow-up to their hit album Love’s Illusion, which spent 29 weeks on the Billboard chart (p.9). April also features key new releases from two other superstars of early music. Jordi Savall conducts a disc of orchestral suites by Marais (p.4) and William Christie’s Le Jardin de Monsieur Rameau presents a collection of gems from the French Baroque (p.21). IMPORT The mysterious and madness-ridden Neapolitan court of Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa was where the first pieces for arpa doppia were created. Price Code: A22 Parthenope, one of the mythological Sirens, was (Suggested Retail Price: $22.98) said to have plunged from cliffs near Naples into the sea after her harp failed to lure Odysseus to his doom. Ever since, she has been venerated as the patron goddess of the city. This recording featuring harpist Margret Köll focuses on music from Naples during the 16th and 17th centuries and contains music by composers from da Venosa’s circle. It includes compositions of Trabaci, de Maque, Mayone and Gesualdo.

The work portrays a Russian composer writing home from the geographical margins just as 150 years earlier Haydn had looked outwards, to the Grand Duchess Maria Feodorovna of Russia and her husband the future Tsar, to whom the Op.33 set was dedicated. If the Prokofiev displays energy and folk-inflected vigor, Shostakovich demands – and receives – total expressive commitment in a work which, the composer darkly suggested to a friend, was written in his own memory.

This two-disc set comprises Schnittke’s entire published output for solo piano (including one piece for piano duet and another for six hands at one keyboard.) The Russian composer’s music often makes gargantuan demands of the player. Smith’s technical prowess, astonishing dynamic palette and heartfelt musicality make him its ideal exponent.

Mlynarski takes Vieuxtemps and Wieniawski as his models. The Violin Concerto No.1, dedicated to Leopold Auer, won a prize in the Paderewski Competition. Like most Polish composers, Zarzycki also wrote pieces in the form of the krakowiak. The Introduction et Cracovienne was well liked by violinists in Zarzycki’s own time but amazingly was not recorded until the CD era. There are 26 songs in all, several of which seem never to have been recorded before (a fact which is hard to understand because they are very attractive). One of Wolf ’s favorite writers, Eichendorff was a German Romantic poet par excellence. His poems are full of the sounds of nature and musical imagery, with references to minstrels and other musicians. He was the poet of Schumann’s Op.39 Liederkreis, though perhaps the most well-known Eichendorff setting is Im Abendrot from Strauss’s Four Last Songs.

He said, “One really cannot praise God, but must protest.” Since none of the 150 psalms in the Bible deals with protest, Eötvös composed his Psalm 151.
